In the 1960s there was a class of cars introduced to the world known as muscle cars. These cars were sleek and sporty and contained a powerful engine. Most of these cars boasted a V8 engine which was geared for speed. As these cars were produced the manufacturers were in stiff competition with each other. As each manufacturer tried to out do the other, we were led into an era of some of the fastest cars of our time. With no thought to gas and fuel efficiency, Americans seemed to be having the time of their lives. Their cars were fast and eye-catching, both on the road and on the race track. Racing stripes and flashy decals made a statement about both the car and the driver. It seemed the flashier the car the more desirable.

At a time when the luxury automobile was the king of the road for the married set, the younger crowd wanted something smaller, faster, and sportier. The Shelby Mustang and the 440 Roadrunner are two of the fast cars which were built to satisfy the desire for high performance and speed. There were many more fast cars to come. Camaros, Chargers, GTOs, and Firebirds all tried to pack as much punch under the hood as was possible. Corvettes offered speed and sleek style, but they also had a high price tag. Most of the other high performance cars offered a price that was affordable to the average working class people.

The Fuel Effect

During the 1960s and 70s auto manufacturers were riding high on a wave of speed and performance. Then we entered an era where we were told gas was in short supply and we were destroying the ozone with our extravagant auto emissions. We reluctantly let go of our fast and sporty cars and took to the streets with a V6 and even a V4. Gas mileage and cheaper insurance costs forced the fast cars onto the race track and off the roadways.

The desire for speed will be with us always. We will probably never again see a time when speed and high performance engines are sold for the every day street car but we can get a glimpse of these cars at the raceway or at vintage car shows. The baby boomers were around to see these cars at their inception and they still carry a torch for them today. Many will spend a small fortune to restore one of these original fast cars back to their former splendor.

At the end of each day, when I lay my head on my pillow, regardless of what happened during the course of the day, I know I’ve had it pretty easy. They would do anything to have the opportunities we have, to feel the security we feel, and to taste the freedom we can taste. Because while you and I are at the dinner table enjoying a meal we did not have to catch ourselves, someone else around the world is walking around in the coldness of the dark, looking for something (anything) to eat. While you and I are sitting on the couch watching the latest episode of our favourite program, someone else around the world is lying on the dirt floor of their mud-hut waiting for the sunshine to come. And while you and I are contemplating whether or not we should get out of bed in the frosty morning weather, someone else around the world is already up working the field because that is all that will keep them warm.

Right now you might be sitting at your desk at home, at a computer lab at school, at work, or wherever, and you look around and see all that you ever need to do something with your life. There is nothing to complain about; you have everything at your disposal to achieve all your goals and dreams. You may not see it, but you need to. And compared to the billions of people living in poverty around the world, life isn’t too bad at all.

So how can you ever complain about anything? How can you ever give up in anything? How can you ever say your life is tough?

I can never give up because there are billions of people around the world who don’t give up. I have no right to give up when a child wakes up everyday to severe poverty, not knowing where his breakfast might come from, or even if he will have any breakfast, or lunch, or dinner. Yet he wakes up anyway. Hopeful that with every passing day, with every passing hour, it is an hour, and a day that will move him closer to a better life.

Billions of people around the world wake up to this situation, and never give up; I can never give up. I have no right to give up. You can never give up. It would be an insult to the millions of unknown strugglers if I were to even contemplate the thought of giving up. I could have easily been with them, rather than where I am now. I could have been in their position, and they could be walking in my shoes, with the abundance of opportunities at my fingertips. I owe it to them, to show them what is possible, and to show them that their strength, and their will, and their determination to survive and to strive is a force that will take them to their dreams. I will never give up because they will never give up. And you should never give up.

And when I wake up in the morning I will have a smile on my face. I will smile not just because I am alive in these times, and in this place, but because I can do incredible things with my life. And so can you. Choose to look at life as an opportunity to fulfil your dreams, and in doing so help others to fulfil their dreams as well. Look at all your supposed problems as opportunities to learn and to grow. View each mistake as one you had to make to learn the lessons necessary to move you closer to your dreams. Think about all the possibilities in your life, and all the opportunities, and take advantage of them now, today, because tomorrow there will be even more available.

You can achieve anything and everything you set your mind to, so long as you can see all the possibilities available to you.

While growing up, my family always had a white KitchenAid mixer sitting on our counter. It normally had a cloth cover on it. My mom used it all the time to make cookies & red velvet cakes. Honestly, I didn’t think much of it, but she always referred to it as her “KitchenAid” rather than her mixer.

My wife put a cobalt blue KitchenAid stand mixer on the list. She explained to me all that she had in her hope chest and that her kitchen would always be navy blue and yellow.

A mortgage broker has said that the number of home buyers taking out 100 per cent mortgages has rapidly increased in 12 months.

According to London & Country, the number taking out 100 per cent mortgages had more than doubled in the past year, while there was a 95 per cent rise in mortgages over 100 per cent.

In fact, some are borrowing up to 125 per cent to give them extra money for decorating and furnishings, reports the Daily Mail.

However, Ray Boulger, from mortgage broker John Charcol, said that only a small percentage of hopeful buyers are able to take out a 100 per cent mortgage.

He said that only a small number of lenders offer this type of mortgage and that borrowers would have to have an excellent credit rating in the first place.

“A 100 per cent mortgage will make sense as long as you can pay it and is it affordable,” he added.

Following the recent claims by two Liberal Democrat MPs that some UK lenders are “tricking” consumers into taking out mortgages with very high arrangement fees, Moneyfacts has argued that borrowers are fully aware of the costs before they make any commitments.

Steve Webb MP and Vince Cable MP claimed in a motion in the House of Commons that consumers are being drawn into deals due to artificially low introductory rates, without realising the high arrangement fees the deal will incur.

Julie Morris, a mortgage analyst at the website, said: “Whilst there is no doubt that fees have increased, particularly in the competitive two year fixed-rate market, it is unlikely that a borrower will sign up for a mortgage without being aware of the amount of the lending fee”.

She added that the website’s true-cost calculations for high-street mortgages are to be published across the national media over the coming months.

The Council of Mortgage Lenders also moved to counter the MPs’ accusations.

Bernard Clarke of the CML stated: “Deals with high arrangement fees may not suit everyone, but those borrowing large sums could find that a high fee is more than offset by the savings they make in interest payments.”

One of the most repeated questions I get on my mailbox from starting jewelers is “Should I make series or one-of-a-kind pieces? What is most likely to make me succeed?” I had that dilemma for a long time too. I shifted from one choice to another, sometimes succeeding and sometimes failing. To be true, I was wrong in both positions.

In terms of supplies, time, investment and studio organizing, it really makes a big difference to make series or unique pieces. Let’s look at the good and bad points about both alternatives more closely:

The good sides of making jewelry in series:
-You can buy big quantities of beads, which usually makes the price lower, and so the price of pieces is also lower.
- Every time you make a piece again, you are mastering your skills, so the piece tends to take less and less time. That gives you the real average time you need to make it, which makes pricing easier.
-You don’t have to update your website so often because you can choose to change products seasonally – or never. That gives you time to improve your blogging, photographing skills, etc. It also gives time for promoting your business and making it bigger and better.
-You don’t have to be very inspired to work just as fine.
-Unsold pieces in small quantities makes great discount sales.

The bad sides of making jewelry in series:
-It can become unbearably boring. You will have to challenge your creativity in other ways.
-If you have a small market niche, you will have to make new series constantly to keep your customers interested.
-You have to buy big quantities of beads so, if pieces do not sell well, you will have tons of unsold inventory waiting to be recycled or sold underpriced.
-You need more studio space because you buy bigger supplies.

The good sides of making one-of-a-kind pieces:
-Every piece you make is a new discovery of your inner landscape. The experience is not comparable to anything. You can enjoy the process of making a jewel for as long as you want.
-Uniqueness raises considerably the price so, you can make more money working less.
-You don’t need big quantities of anything so you don’t need to invest a lot of money when you are starting and you don’t need a big studio.
-Customers tend to think you are a better artist if you don’t do series, because people love to buy uniqueness.
-Recycling vintage jewelry to make one-of-a-kind pieces is a strongly growing market. Second-hand jewelry can be found at very low prices at flea markets and thrift stores. Also friends and relatives can contribute with broken or unused pieces, making a very profitable income for beginners.
-You can work with an endless diversity of materials and techniques, making you a more complete crafter.

The bad sides of making one-of-a-kind-pieces:
-It is very time consuming as you have to make a new design every time. That makes prices raise, and it is not easy to sell high if you are a beginner!
-That a piece is one-of-a-kind does not mean you will achieve it at the first try. Sometimes you have to make a piece two or three times but you only sell the last one.
-It puts custom orders away, because customers tend to buy what you have, not what you could make.
-The amount of time you need to make a one-of-a-kind piece is not an average time so pricing becomes more difficult. That you need two hours to make that earrings doesn’t mean it takes two hours to make them!
-A lot of unfinished projects fall on the way. You won’t earn a cent for the time you took making them.
-It is very hard to work if you are uninspired, worried, sad or angry.

My personal advice: Avoid boredom and do both!

If you own a home business, indolence is your main enemy! Making both series and one-of-a-kind pieces will keep you busy whether if you are inspired or not. Personally I make a couple of one-of-a-kind pieces between series. When I feel my inspiration is going down I do repetitive work, which you can use to get into a very relaxing meditative state of mind. Then usually a new idea comes up after three or four days. I also do the “office work” when I’m less artsy – I write my articles, update the blog and such.

I think this makes a very comforting and stimulating balance. Giving myself the chance to choose both alternatives have not only ended with boredom and inactive impasses, but also have increased sales wonderfully! Some customers only buy if it’s expensive, and some only buy if it’s cheap! You can have something for both, which is very positive when you have a small market.

If you work constantly you will find your regular rhythms, something that is crucial in reaching your full potential. For example, I always start the week with office work, then do some series, then some unique items, and the weekend is my best selling time. If you work naturally with your own energies, and get to know when’s the perfect time to go out and sell, or when you should stay home and work, you will be more effective, make less mistakes and earn more profits- not only money profits, but in general peace of mind and clearness to make the best choices for you. Stop fighting with yourself and start listening to yourself instead.

This approach is something like extending the idea of creating and using a stage-persona –something that great performers have used to good effect for thousands of years. The creation of that winning persona is simply easier if you can imagine a real person who has the attributes you seek.

You will be simply amazed that it is possible to begin producing results almost immediately with this technique – and don’t worry, nobody will know what you are doing. You will not be recognized as a poor impersonation: instead, you will be attributed as having the personality, energy and charisma of the person you are modeling.

Eventually, those new behaviours – the ones that are producing the results - will sink deep into your own personality you will change fro the better. So ultimately, you will not need to ‘fake it’ because you will become the genuine article.
