Engine Bay Detailing & Restoration - A Guide For The Serious Enthusiast On Achieving Perfection

Abstract:

This is one of a series of books that are related to automobile shows and presenting your vehicle the best way to be successful with these events. This specific book provides tips and hints on making your engine bay become an eye catcher.

After years of working on my own vehicles and striving for perfection I wrote this book to share some of the things that I have learned. The creation of my judging guide was the first book that focused on how to prepare your vehicle for a car show. That book, as well as other helpful publications have been published on the Internet. These publications provide guidance and many tips to help you better understand what is required to transform your engine bay into an engine bay that jumps out.

The reason for this E-Book was that there are bits and pieces of information available on this topic, but nothing in a comprehensive format, making this guide is a good starting point for the novice. The information contained in this guide will get you over the initial hurdles and save you from having to learn everything on your own. This is a helpful guide for the novice, as well as the experienced car enthusiast.

Engine Bay Detailing & Restoration

-A guide for the serious enthusiast on achieving perfection-

1. Introduction

At a public car show spectators see the end result of many painstaking hours, weeks and even years required to get a vehicle to the highest levels of perfection. Attention is paid to every detail from the shine on the paint, to making sure that the tires do not have any dirt on them. This e-book will provide some guidelines on how to take your vehicle from a daily cruiser that looks nice, to the next level. The main focus of this guide is on the engine bay and drive train, however, other helpful tips on other areas are included as well. There are many aftermarket products as well as creative ideas that will open the door for you to make your engine bay unique. This guide will present a variety of ideas from those that are inexpensive and easy to do, to those that are very time consuming and expensive. You decide what it is that best fits your needs.

For the seasoned show car owner, some of this information may be obvious to you, but there are some not so obvious tips that could help you beat out the competition! Have they already read this book? You should read this guide to make sure that you are maximizing your car show winning experience! The companion book, “Peoples Choice Judging Guide To Car Shows-A guide for the serious enthusiast on judging and showing your car” talks about the complete car show experience and getting your overall car ready. This book focuses on taking it to the next level with the attention to specific areas. That book also includes a handy checklist that you can use making it even easier not to overlook any details complemented with numerous color photographs an examples of what is described.

2. Start By Looking Under The Hood

Opening the hood should bring a smile to your face and you should be proud to share your hard work with others leaving them with a lasting impression. The main question is, what makes one engine bay stand out from another and leave that lasting impression? This is key to understanding what will get you the additional point or points. At a car show, how a vehicle is displayed and presented is the key to differentiate one from another, and attract more attention. In this authors opinion, when I have the opportunity to judge a car show, even if it is a “People Choice Show”, if the hood is not open exposing the engine bay, I usually overlook that vehicle. The first thing that goes through my mind, as well as many others is, what are they hiding? Lets open up your hood and see what potential lies there.

Depending upon the class that the vehicle is entered into, there are different approaches to dressing up the engine bay. In the case of a concours show, the key is that the engine bay is based upon its original look and condition when it rolled off the assembly line. If it did not come from the factory with chrome valve covers, there should not be any there now. This limits how much customization can be done. For many other classes, customization and uniqueness is the goal. The owners’ vehicle is an extension of their personality, and there are many steps that they take to personalize it

As a starting point you need to keep an objective opinion, along with a realistic view of what can be done with your budget and time. Unless you are going to do a complete engine removal and strip the entire bay you may want to see what you can do in a more time and cost efficient manner. This guide will provide three approaches to refreshing your engine bay, starting from a general freshening, to a more detailed approach with some disassembly, to a full restoration with the engine removed.

2.2 General Freshening As A Starting Point - Look Under the Hood

This section will focus on what can be done with what you have for minimal time and cost. The success of this is based upon what it is you are trying to achieve, as well as what condition everything is to start with. If your daily driver is covered with mud and has 200k miles on it, do not expect to make it a show car with just a basic cleaning.

Step back and assess the following:

· Is the overall engine compartment clean?
- A basic steam cleaning and degreasing may be a good starting point to see what you have to work with. Depending how dirty it is, you may be able to just use a mild cleaner and low pressure water to minimize the mess. This is often a good approach for a clean bay with minimal dirt from driving to car shows, or getting caught in that rainstorm.
- Some of the orange based biodegradable sprays are a good mild cleaning solution that will remove the dirt and oil while minimizing any damage to the component finishes or discoloring the decals.
- Make sure to clean the underside of the hood.
- CAUTION - Be cautious when cleaning a hot engine. Some cleaners can be over activated when sprayed on a hot block and remove the engine paint making more of a mess.

There are many examples of common corrugated tubing and nylon expandable tubing available. Both of these items can be found at most automotive supply houses and come in a variety of colors and diameters. One advantage of the corrugated tubing is that it is sliced/split along its entire length making it easy to have wires enter and exit the bundles. When pulling wires through the expandable tubing, plan in advance for all of the wires that will need to be pulled. It is best to hold the wire bundle together and tape all the ends together with electrical tape to make it easier to thread through the tubing. The tight mesh does make it difficult to have wires exit the tubing in the middle, but it can be carefully done. To pull a wire through the side make sure that there is sufficient slack in the wire inside of the tube, then use a nail of other small probe to pull the wire through the holes in the mesh. Do not use a knife or tool that will cut the mesh, or it will fray.

· Is the radiator clean and free of bugs and other debris?
- A light brushing with a “soft bristle” hand brush may help here to remove bugs, and other road debris.
- A quick removal of the radiator and a paint job can do wonders. Often the top areas look bad from hot antifreeze boiling over. Removing the radiator, cleaning it and painting it with high quality radiator paint will make it stand out. Be sure to use paint that is designed for radiators so you do not impact the cooling efficiency. Standard engine paints are too thick for use on a radiator, thus reducing heat transfer (i.e. cooling efficiency). The thicker paints could also fill and block the air flow between the tight fins. Always try to use the minimal amount of paint to cover the surfaces.

HELPFUL HINTS:
· For that quick clean and shine, a good wipe down with WD-40 on a rag will make all rubber hoses and wires look like new.
· Firewalls and fender aprons can also be wiped down with a WD-40 rag to clean and make those areas shine. This does wonders for a dull and faded black engine bay.
· For some of the hard to reach spots, such as the rear firewall, you can spray a vinyl dressing on the engine bay paint, hoses and wiring in those areas and let dry overnight. This will give a nice shiny black finish. Be careful not to get it on the body paint, or other areas.
· Steering and suspension components, along with other lower drive line items such as the drive shaft, can be made to look better with a through cleaning, and then a wipe down with PB Blaster to give it that fresh look. PB Blaster is sold at many auto parts stores and is also great for cleaning undercarriage, steering and suspension components.
· Using soft brass bristle brushes will remove loose rust and debris from items such as the steering box, front end components etc. Once brushed, spray with PB blaster for protection.
· Brake cleaner “if used cautiously” can be a great cleaner for cleaning metal suspension and drive line components that are NOT, and I repeat NOT painted. Brake cleaner sprayed on a cast aluminum transmission will loosen and make oil and dirt run off exposing the clean metal. DO NOT get this fluid on any painted areas or the paint will be damaged.

Another one of the least expensive improvements in the engine bay is wire dressing. Of course you can go to an extreme with custom tailored sleeves, but black electrical tape can go a long way. Every wire should look neat and well organized. Attention to every detail, such as the wire terminations adds points. In the next picture yellow and red heat shrink tubing just looks sloppy and has no theme, including the wires having an unorganized appearance. Black tape in many cases will provide a more factory look tying it to the overall theme and draw less negative attention. It’s purely the preference of the owner and the look they are trying to get. Most of this engine is aftermarket with chrome and other performance products including a reproduction original battery adding a bit of nostalgia. It does not have to be done 100% as concours to look good.

3.5 Passing The Eye Appeal Test

Now that your engine bay is clean and you can see what you have to work with. The next step is to look for the obvious things that stick out and take away from the overall look. The thought to keep in the back of your head is, do the pieces (and colors) go together and is there a common theme, or does it look like an auto swap clutter of different things.

This book contains examples of many things “not” to do. Examples are presented to show how everything looks cluttered, and making it difficult to distinguish the various components since there is little contrast between the stainless steel braided hoses and the other chrome components. The focus here needs to be on dressing and placing the hoses and wires in a more organized fashion making it look less cluttered. This is not an easy task given the space limitations for the large engine in this example. Custom plug wires will eliminate excess wire loops, and wire retainers and wire looms will hold wires in place giving a cleaner appearance.

Complementary examples show same engine compartment with as little as what as in the 40 hours can do to transform it back to a more stock look. Note that most of the chrome has been removed including, the braided hoses and air cleaner. The wires along the firewall and fender areas have been re-dressed with black tape, heat shrink tubing, and wire ties providing a neater appearance. In addition the firewall areas and inside fender areas have been painted and all of the decals were replaced.

5.6 Detailing To The Next level

Taking your engine bay to the next level requires extensive labor and painstaking attention to detail above and beyond what many owners do. The optimum approach is to remove the engine and all components from the engine bay area. This section is intended to give a general understanding as an introduction to this full level of restoration.

Even if you are going to purchase a new power steering pump, or other component, most come from the manufacturer with an okay everyday finish. If you want that show room look, follow the steps outlined will help get you there.

In some cases the owner may wish to use as many original parts as possible and therefore rebuild and refinish them to look like new. An example is shown taking a power steering pump from a 1969 Mustang that started off as a rusty, and decent condition unit that was a working. The unit was completely sandblasted to remove rust, loose paint and debris, primed and sanded as outlined above. The steps show how this was made to look new, and the technique can be applied to many other components.

6. From Stock To Fully Modified - Examples To Make Your Mind Wander

Each and every owner has a preference on how they wish to modify or maintain their car. The examples in this section will provide some references from a stock look to some of the wildest engine bays around.

You can find many examples where owners wanted to keep the engine as close as possible to the original factory style to those with a completely modified car. Once you have a great looking engine bay everyone musty be able to see it. One extreme in engine bay display is a completely detailed engine compartment with additional lighting to enhance the key details. Why spend hours and hours, as well as many dollars and not be able to see the results. Indoor shows often do not have sufficient lighting along with shadowing. It is also important to make sure that everything is visible. One example is the hood is on stands along with the air cleaner raising them up to provide added viewing. Accessory lighting ensures that everything is visible and enhances the shine and colors. This is a combination of a great looking car that is well presented. An orange and white theme is carried throughout enhancing the overall look.

No matter how old or how new the vehicle is, there is always a way to personalize it. To give you an idea of what we are talking about a 1995 Impala is used. The original factory engine was mostly black, and most of the engine could not be seen with all of the rubber and hoses. This is a very good example of what chrome and a bit of added color can do to catch the spectators and judges eye. Some enthusiasts take chroming to the extreme. One classic street rod is presented with absolutely everything chromed except for the engine block. You can see this engine sticking out of the hood from 100 feet away, and in sunlight, its blinding. This is truly a trailer queen where there are no fluids in this engine, and does not get driven.

7. Final Remarks On Detailing Your Engine Bay

Even though we are only presetting a few excerpts form the book, by now you realize that every engine bay is an extension of the owners personality and there is no right or wrong way, as long as there is attention to the details, and a theme is carried through. Presentation is the key to differentiate one vehicle from another, and attract more attention to yours. Your specific vehicle is an extension of your personality, and if you have more than one vehicle you may express it differently given the vehicle type. Look at what others have done and open your imagination and embark on the first step to personalize yours. By utilizing the tips here you are one step closer.

So to get started, take what you have learned here, find a local car show and most of all just have fun.

For additional information on how to make an outstanding display and have it stand out even more, visit Palmieri Concepts at http://www.PalmieriConcepts.com and read more. There are many more examples that have helped enthusiasts like you become the talk of the show and hold that trophy high.

Anthony Palmieri founded Palmieri Concepts after 20 years of creating custom artwork for his own pleasure and enjoyment along with 30 years as a car enthusiast. This business initially grew out of a love for motor vehicles and was started to share with others what began as a hobby. After taking his own pride and joys (yes this really started with family pictures and not cars) and combining them with creativity, it became obvious that many others would like to showcase their loves as he has done.

Microsoft Great Plains Dynamics GP Consulting in Houston Metro

Great Plains Dynamics implementation in Houston area should be considered in the light of the following technologies: Great Plains Dexterity, eConnect, VBA, Modifier, GPS Integration Manager. Here we would like to give you initial technology highlights

–Great Plains or currently Microsoft Dexterity. It is GP development environment with scripting programming language sanscript. DYNAMICS.DIC is Dexterity dictionary. Each GP table has DEX_ROW-ID column, which is required buy Dexterity architecture

–eConnect. Opposing Dexterity, eConnect manipulates GP objects (while Dex doesn’t do this, and rather goes to procedural level). We recommend eConnect for all the types of ongoing automatic integrations from eCommerce web site, for instance, to GP. eConnect is friendly to MS Visual Studio.Net C# or VB.Net developer. Plus you can design scenarios, when Dexterity integration to GP security module provides front end (Dexterity screens) and eConnect does the programming job.

–Extender. This tool allows you efficiently create Forms and Tables and link them to GP objects, such as customer. You can design very advanced structure for custom commission calculation for examples. Then, when forms and tables are created, consider eConnect and Visual Studio dll project to be called from Dexterity screens

–Integration Manager. Currently under the way of being redesigned with eConnect engine. Historically IM was open to VBA scripting and data transformations (vendor id remapping, for example, based on Excel template). IM is rather end user tool, when programming is required, you should seek professional consultant help

–eCommerce. Here we would like to emphasize the cases, when you already have functioning eCommerce and need customization & integration projects to remap you eCommerce site to GP. Here your tools are eConnect, Alba Spectrum Posting Server (breaking thru eConnect posting limitations, as well as SOP transfers)

–Industry Verticals. Besides of publicly known vertical solutions, in our opinion variety of modern businesses, especially on the edge of business processes innovation, face the need to further and uniquely customize ERP and MRP application. GP should be good fit for the following industries: Transportation & Logistics, Consignment, Supply Chain, Discrete Manufacturing, non-profit, Aerospace & defense, internationals business (English speaking countries, plus Spanish Latin America)

–Upgrades. It is not a secret, that when you implement custom solution, altering business logic of your ERP application, standard version update may fail and you will need developer or consultant help to analyze custom features. In the case of GP, upgrade typically fails on the level of SQL upgrade scripts. Your consultant should be comfortable to analyze standard upgrade SQL stored procedures and make required alterations

–GP software development. It is recommended to place these projects offshore, to Philippines or India. Manila has long history of former Great Plains Software developers training, while India is catching up recent few years

Web Development Must Haves

The second thing you must have on your web site is an opt-in form. No visitor to your site should be allowed to leave without the option of leaving their email address. You rarely get two chances with a visitor, so make your opt-in form prominent and offer some freebie to induce them to sign up. This can be a newsletter, a free ebook or perhaps even 5 or 7 part course. Courses are good since you can prove yourself to be an expert in your field.

However, once you have at least a first name and email address, you can keep in touch and send special offers of products that can provide you with an income. You will notice that all of the successful internet marketers have an opt-in form, either directly on their web site, or as a pop-up that appears while you are visiting their site.

Thirdly, it is of great advantage to you have a page saying something about you. Every web site should have an “About Me” page, so that visitors can read about whom your are, where you live and what you have achieved in the past. You can include a photograph of you, and even of your family. People feel a bit more secure doing business with someone who appears to have nothing to hide.

Fourth is contact information. These things that you must have on your web site are presented in order of importance, since what might be the most important to one person could be the least to another. Contact information is essential. You should provide at least a contact email programmed to an autoresponder that informs the sender of the email that their mail has been received and will responded to within at least 24 hours.

A telephone number and postal address, while not essential, lets your visitors know that you are accessible, and don’t mind others knowing your phone number and address.

The fifth essential design item is a simple navigation system. Your main navigation should be on your home page, but this should not provide links to every page in your site. Your home page navigation should take visitors to your main theme pages, which themselves should have further links to lesser pages.

For example, your home page on a writing site could link to calligraphy, which itself could then lead to various calligraphy-related pages, then each sub-page to articles. Additionally to this you could sign up for Google Adsense and place an ‘Adsense for Search’ box on your home page. This provides a Google web search box that can also be used for a site search on up to three of your websites. Alternatively, you can use site search software available on the internet.

If you include these five web design basics, your site will be more successful than without them.

Minnesota Winter Crows - a Poem With Notes and Commentary on Winter Storms

Minnesota Winter Crows
[A Minnesota Poem] in Haiku form

The long, long wave of winter
Creeps, slowly creeps back
From where it came from

It had burst around us, this
This Merry spell-died
It has not, not yet…

But lifted its gray, bleak clouds-
It most surely has!
Less lovely…yes, perhaps;

Then comes early spring: crows
In their bleak, black-flight
Looking feverish…!

#1732 3-13-2007

Notes: here is a four stanza Haiku, on the ending of winter in Minnesota, in 2007. Minnesota is known for its winters going out like a lion, and so it has proven so in the month of March, of 2007, when this poem was written. It would seem winter would simply stop, and spring would come in, but it never happens that way. Even the crows have a period of time to readjust to the new season, for the winter has helped them grow thin and lean, and has helped the humans in Minnesota to grow fat, because they hibernate in the house somewhat. Then in spring the crows grow fat, and the humans start growing lean, they get out of the house as soon as possible-and then there is no end to their activities.

Commentary on Winter Storms: Winter storms are simply a part of the culture, a fact of life, or so it would seem in Minnesota; I was born there, in St. Paul, and have witnessed many of them. Severe winter storms go back as far as weather reporting goes, to perhaps, Nov 10, 1835, when a severe storm caused 19shipwrecks on Great Lakes, 254 sailor’s diedī. And then on Nov 8, 1870 the first winter storm warning was issued by the U.S. Army Signal Corps. On March 14-15, 1941 terrible blizzard in western counties, 85-mph winds at Grand Forks, 75 mph winds at Duluth. In 1996, we had three blizzards, and in 1997, we had five blizzards. The total seasonal snow fall, is between 90 and 120 inches.

Web Site Must Haves

A web site is not easy to design, but there are some web site basics and there are five things that every web site should not be without. In fact, there are probably more, and the five presented here are not necessarily the five that others would choose. If, however, you include these five then you will have a far better chance of your web site being successful in its objective that without them.

It is true to say that the essential components of a good web site depend upon the objective of the web site. For example, an information site that is not selling anything has no need for a checkout and credit card payment portal that is critical to a sales site. This article, then, will present the five aspects of site design that are essential to any website, irrespective of its objective.

First, the site must have good search engine optimization, or SEO, factors embedded in the design. There are ways to construct a web site that make it friendly to search engines, and there are many theories on the subject that are not the topic of this article.

An important factor is keywords. A keyword relates to the search term used by a search engine’s customer to find the information they want. Include keywords on every page of your web site, and currently you want no more than two keywords every 400 words. The days of 1% - 3% keyword density are over, but you must also include vocabulary relevant to the theme of the article.

Another important factor is the title of each page. It should be different for each page, and you should have the keyword for the page in the title, the title in bold text and contained within < H1 > html tags. These are basic SEO practices.

Web Site Traffic Generation II

Signature Text

The fourth way to get more traffic could be classed as advertising, but it is done in a clever way. Use a signature for all of your emails and forum posts that includes your web site URL. This is commonly called a ’sig’. Register for forums relevant to your niche or web site subject, and use your sig in every post. Use it also in every email you send. In this way your web site will get a lot of exposure.

Opt-In Forms

Finally, by no means last, but the last of the five, this is not strictly a means of gaining traffic, but a way of maintaining it. It can be argued that keeping the traffic you get is, in effect, a means of increasing your annual traffic flow. Whether you agree or not, if you fail to include an opt-in form on your website you will lose a great deal of potential traffic.

What an opt-in form does is to provide you with a list of first names and email addresses of everybody who visited your web site and filled in the form. In order to seduce them to do so you will have to offer them something. This is usually a newsletter offering news and information on a regular basis about your niche, or even a course over a number of emailings. The important thing is to get that email address.

You can mail them on a regular basis making them special offers on your products, or introducing the latest software that could help their business. This not only maintains the traffic you have, but also can increase it if you persuade your customers to recommend your site to others.

Traffic building is not easy, but can be made easier if you follow these five simple tips on how to increase traffic to your website.

Web Site Traffic Generation I

Traffic building is the major job of every web site owner. Without traffic your website is like a Picasso painting hidden in the vaults of a gallery. There are five easy ways to increase traffic to your website, and if you take this advice you had better be prepared to handle the massive surge of traffic that will make the difference between success and failure.

Search Engine Optimization

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the most well known means of getting your site exposed, and the least understood. Use your keywords intelligently and sparsely, and use plenty of vocabulary related to the keywords, and the search engines will sit up and take notice. Use a good title for each page that contains the keyword relevant to the page and put the title in < H1 > html tags.

Advertising

Advertising is another of the five major ways to increase traffic to your web site. Advertising is both elementary and essential. There are many ways to advertise, though most depend on having success first. It is easier for Dreamworld to advertise their latest film that a brand new independent film studio. Let’s have a look at one or two ways of doing it.

If the theme of your site is sports related you could approach your local sports center, fitness clubs and gyms and ask if you can put up a poster advertising your website. Many local shops allow free advertising cards in their windows and the local press is an excellent medium for advertising a website operated by a local business.

Secondly there are paid ads. If you can target a PPC advert with the exact specific content of your sales page, then that kind of traffic is a lot more valuable that any other. So, look at your site and see where you could add a few more pages to be more selective in the products they offer. It costs you no more to run a 500 page website than a 5 page website.

Article Marketing

A third means after SEO and direct advertising is to write articles on your niche. Leave your readers wanting more information and a well designed resource box directing your readers to your website providing that information, and they will provide with a lot of traffic. It has been proved time and time again. Submit them to article directories and that is traffic building as it should be done.

SEO Intermediate Secrets

You should design your website so that links away from your own site are minimized. Each link that a spider finds can bleed content from your site and distract the spider from your site. Also keep in mind that spiders crawl from left to right in the same way that you read. However, if they come across a table they will read the whole table before going on to the next one. The same with columns. Not only that, but they read the html, not the visible text.

If you have a left hand navigation table then a main table containing your content, the spiders will read all the text in the navigation table first before going back to the next table containing your text. Spiders read the first 500 or so words, so all text in your navigation column is counted. If you have a fair bit of text, as many do, much of your content text will not be used by the spiders. What you should do is put a small empty table or column first, then your main text table or column, and then insert your navigation table, giving it a left align.

Your content should be good naturally written content. Use of keywords should be restricted the page heading or title, any subheadings and to the text. One instance of the keyword targeted at the start of your text and one at the end is enough for a 400 word text, and one more instance for each 200 words after that is about perfect. Too many keywords will be punished, and lots of vocabulary related to the keyword will be rewarded.

There are other on-page tricks, but let’s go to the off-page now. Links back to your site from other sites are critical in receiving a high listing. Article writing is the best way there is of getting one way links back to your website. You get a link from the article directory you submit your article to, and one for every website that uses your article as content. These links indicate to Google that you are a well thought of site for the search term used, as indicated in the first paragraph of this article.

In conclusion, if you put yourself in the position of someone making an internet search, and recognized what a website could do to provide you with all of what you need, design you site to do just that. There is no need to know SEO secrets to optimize your web pages for search engines, just an understanding of what search engines are and what customers want from them.

Get Your Article Published More Often

Article Directories have become very popular for both, the
authors who want their articles published and the people
who are looking for content for their ezines or sites.
But this has lead to a huge amount of article directories
on the internet, which makes it impossible to submit Your
Articles to all of them by hand.

The solution to getting published by as many directories
as possible is to use automatic article submitter software.
These tools will auto-fill the forms at the article directory
sites for You and thus save You tons of time. Article
Instant Submitter will also have more than 150 directories
You can post to. This will save You time and effort searching
the net for all of these.

By getting Your article published with a submission software
You will greatly increase the chances of getting published on
sites or ezines other than the article directory. This will
dramatically increase the amount of traffic You will receive
and give You more quality backlinks to boost Your Link Popularity.

Getting Your Article out to all sites possible always ensures
that Your article and link is going to be picked up by a search
engine spider rather fast than slow. The more listings You
create, the higher Your chances of seeing Your website in the
search results in just days.

So use an Article Instant Submitter and give Your article all
the exposure it needs to become a successful promotion tool for
You and to get published more often. This will help You to
build reputation online and get Your web-sites listed higher up
in the search engines!
