A Good Defense Without Being Offensive

I recently had to learn a lesson which I often suggest that my clients learn: how to set boundaries and convey the truth in such a way that the other person doesn’t feel attacked. In other words, how to respond when someone has irritated, frustrated, or infuriated you.

The main aspect of this kind of communication is to make “I” statements. In my case, I received an unjust criticism. I wanted to respond, “You dirty, rotten so-and-so! Who do you think you are?” I wanted to recount every fault and point out every failure in this person’s history. I wanted to lash out. You know what that would have done. It wouldn’t be pretty. I thought better of it. Not knowing what to say, I didn’t say anything.

That was a mistake. Not saying anything just let the injustice stew in my gut. I turned it over and over, looking at it from every angle to see just how inaccurate the criticism was and feeling mighty justified about being indignant. I was giving up my own sense of peace and well-being, fighting a battle that had no end.

What to do? I mentioned it to a wise friend who suggested something I should have done in the first place, “Tell him how his words affected you. Say something like, ‘When you said this, I found it very difficult to do my job properly. Please be more supportive and constructive.’” That statement is true. It probably wouldn’t have caused a conflagration and, more importantly, I would have set my boundaries.
Making “I” statements is a good technique. Expressing the felt emotion is a remarkable tool for dialogue. But what if the person you must communicate with is too powerful or too unstable to be trusted or has moved out of your life completely? What if you don’t feel safe telling the person anything about how you feel? What then?

Even when it’s impossible or inadvisable to express your feelings to the appropriate person, it is still important to define how you feel to yourself. You can write a letter and never deliver it. You can say it to someone who has a sympathetic ear. But define it you must because keeping a list of grievances can fester and bubble up when you least want them. For me, when I examined the frustration I felt from this unjust criticism, I realized that my not addressing it immediately made my life difficult; I had constant rebuttals bouncing aimlessly around in my head.

When I asked myself what emotions I felt, what was under the frustration, I was surprised to identify feelings in my chest. We feel sadness and grief in our chests. I thought it would be anger but under it all was sadness. I am feeling sad about having never built an alliance of mutual support with this person. I was letting go of lost dreams and more than anything, that was the root of my frustration.
What can you do to communicate what you feel?

* Stop whatever you’re doing and take several deep breaths.

* Scan your body for sensations.

* Equate locations of sensations to the major emotions.

Belly, solar plexus = Fear

Center of body, heart = Love

Chest = Sadness, grief

Shoulders, jaw, back of neck = Anger

* Express your emotion in a non-judgmental way.

Remember the adage: “Good fences make good neighbors.” Create good boundaries and express your emotions when someone crosses one.

Back Pain Exercises to Strengthen Lower Back

If you were to have legal access to the records of every general practitioner across the United States, you would find that lower back pain is one of the most common reasons for visits to physicians. Studies show that about 60 percent of reported pain problems in the U.S. are lower back pain. Most such pain is relieved with treatment as conservative as over-the-pain medication.

Ask a physician for advice on the best treatment, and you will likely be told, “You need back pain exercises to strengthen lower back muscles.”

What Kind of Back Exercise?

Stretching and strengthening back exercise is usually recommended. Hip rotations, rump lifts, and thigh pulls will stretch you back muscles. Alternate superman exercises, along with things such as “slippery heels’, “high heels”, and “brake pedals” will strengthen your back.

Instructions for these exercises are available from your therapist or online, and no equipment is necessary for performing them.

At the Gym

Our body’s cores are often neglected, and need a program of regular back exercises to strengthen lower back muscles. We work on the front of the body, slimming, trimming, and building abdominal muscles, but we neglect the back. We use exercises to strengthen arm and leg muscles, but forget the back.

When you work out at the gym or health club, check how much time you spend working on abdominal muscle groups. Now schedule identical time for back exercise.

If your gym has a hyperextension table or bench, by all means use it regularly.

In Your Home

The back is vital to standing and sitting upright, and worth investment, if needed. You do not have to invest money, of course, but you may choose to invest in one or more of these four basic tools.

1. Exercise mat. A simple exercise mat is often all you need to keep yourself faithful to a regimen of back pain exercises to strengthen lower back muscles. Very inexpensive exercise mats are available in the sporting goods department of discount “box” stores. Cover your exercise mat with a towel to keep it clean, and throw the towel in your wash as needed.

2. Exercise ball. An exercise ball is also called a physio ball or a Swiss ball. They are available in fitness stores, sporting goods stores, and online. Exercise balls are a cost-effective solution for such things as balance, cardiovascular fitness, coordination, flexibility, neuromotor training, and strength. They can help you do several back exercises.

The exercise ball is a conservative treatment option for back pain sufferers. It will not only treat current pain, but will go far toward preventing future episodes of low back pain.

3. Roman chair. A roman chair is a type of hypertension bench. They are found in many health clubs or gyms, but investing in your own may keep you more faithful in doing vital back exercise.

Roman chairs do not look like chairs, and users are more likely to be on their stomachs than on their backs in roman chairs. They are great for back exercise, though. They are especially helpful for extension exercises, one of a number of effective back pain exercises to strengthen lower back muscles.

A roman chair should have a traction foot plate to help you position yourself securely while using it. For beginners, a 45 degree exercise angle will make it easier to perform back extension exercises. This will mean a less intense workout for you.

4. If you are determined to work your “abs” - and have a little more to spend on back exercise equipment, an “Ab and back machine” will give you the balance you need. An ab and back machine will place your body in the seated position, which is the most comfortable and safe position for back exercise coupled with ab exercise. Used straight forward, this machine will tighten and tone your abs, obliques and midsection. Rotate the action arm, and the machine provides back exercise.

All back exercise should be done in moderation, and any increases in repetitions should be gradual. This is not a competition, but a means of strengthening your back. If you rush back exercise, or overdo it, you may cause more problems than you had.

Remember, before starting a program of back exercise, consult a physician. There may be underlying physical conditions, such as hernias, that you would worsen by stressing muscles. In addition, medical problems such as coronary disease or diabetes may require your physician’s specific observation.

Traffic Building - Making Traffic Exchanges Work for You

Traffic exchanges were one of the first things I used to generate traffic when I first came online. Since that time they have changed in many ways, but the basic premise is the same; you receive traffic in exchange for looking at other websites. While I no longer use them as much as I once did, they are still an effective way to generate lots of traffic, if used properly. Having said that, there are several things that you should be aware of in order to get the most from your surfing experience. Some of these suggestions may seem quite basic but can help immensely to make Traffic Exchanges work for you.

First, make sure you are using the right kind of browser. It makes no sense to use a browser that won’t allow you to surf several sites at the same time. In fact, surfing numerous sites at the same time is the only way to surf! While there quite a few browser’s out there, the one I use and recommend is ‘Mozilla Firefox’. This browser is pretty simple to use once you get the hang of it, and has several features that will facilitate your surfing experience. For instance, this browser will allow you to set up ‘groups’ of Traffic Exchanges that you can open with the click of one button. The way you want to do this is to set up several groups of Traffic Exchanges that have the same basic timer. If you’re not familiar with Traffic or Hit exchanges the way the generally work is each site has a timer that allows a site to be seen for a specified period of time. It could be any period of time, but is usually 15, 20 or 30 seconds. What you want to do is set your groups up so that they all have the same basic time frame. This allows for continuous surfing and will keep you from waiting for timers to run down.

Another thing that you want to make sure of is that you have updated Virus software. It’s a fact of life that just as in the real world, on the Internet there are a small minority of people that have nothing better to do than cause others grief. Be aware of it, and make certain that you have updated Virus protection before starting to surf. While there is no guarantee that even with this protection you’ll never have a problem, it helps put the odds in your favor. After surfing, make it a point to delete all ‘Temporary Files’ and it also helps to set ‘History’ to 0 days. ‘Windows’ users can do this easily by going to the ‘Control Panel’ then ‘Network and Internet Connections’, and finally ‘Internet Options’. Doing this regularly will help your computer run better and will enhance your surfing experience. Also, don’t even think about trying to surf numerous sites with Dial-Up. If you’re one of the few people still using it, you should seriously think about upgrading before trying to surf numerous sites at the same time.

As far as what to advertise on the Traffic Exchanges, it’s your choice, but be aware that most of the people using these exchanges are fellow advertisers hoping to sell you on their product or business. You might find it difficult to achieve much success if you’re advertising the same type of affiliate program that hundreds or thousands of others are as well. Even if advertising a program that is all over the Internet, you’ll do much better if you create your own simple custom pages. Of course having your own unique product that caters to these advertisers, such as a way to build a list or increase traffic, is always in demand. So if trying to come up with a product or service to advertise, keep the needs of fellow advertisers in mind.

Traffic exchanges on the Internet continue to evolve, but it’s quite probable that they’ll be around for many years to come. If your goal is to increase website traffic but don’t have a lot of money to spend, Traffic Exchanges could be a great place to start. Happy Surfing!

Fix Your Cranky Golf Swing Forever

You may receive all the greatest golf tips in the world, take countless lessons and get superior instruction and still may not be able to gain consistency. If you’re like most golfers, you want to improve, not just hack around the golf course. It’s important to remember, your golf swing is what drives your score; not your clubs or ball.

Overall, you generally want to play golf with confidence. It’s been proven that thinking positively about bettering your golf game will benefit you more than playing to compete with your partners and trying to win for winnings sake. Approach the game with a positive attitude and repeat affirmations if you can, such as “I play great golf all the time.”

Putts and short chips are ideally played without much movement of the body, but most other golf shots are played using variants of the full golf swing. Try not to grip the club too tightly. After the ball is hit, the follow-through stage consists of a continued rotation to the left.

The backswing is a rotation to the right, consisting of a shifting of the player’s body weight to the right side, a turning of the pelvis and shoulders, lifting of the arms and flexing of the elbows and wrists. At the end of a backswing the hands are above the right shoulder, with the golf club pointing more or less in the intended direction of ball flight. Before you swing, make sure you’re relaxed; contract all your muscles tightly for a moment and then relax them.

Standing over the ball for too long a time and wondering whether you’re going to swing the club correctly can easily result in a skewed shot, or completely missing the ball. Ask your golf pro to evaluate your posture while swinging. The most important thing about the golf swing is the angle and not the strength that’s applied to it.

Trust your golf club to do the job it was intended to do. Many golfers who are strongly left-handed in their daily life prefer the right-handed golf swing.

Don’t underestimate the value of fitness when it comes to your golf swing and your overall golf game. It’s no secret; most of the professional players actively participate in workouts. Using a weighted club, make rotational golf swings to improve your power.

There are golf swing aids that will help you with swing alignment. Golf aids are often for sale at your pro shop or local golf shop. There are golf swing aids that act as driving range simulators. Golf swing aids will improve your golf game. There are a wide range of golf swing aids on the market today to help the beginning and advanced golfer. Look for golf swing aids at your local golf course.

Overall, investing in golf swing aids will greatly improve your golf swing and your golf game. Most of all don’t waste your money on a golf swing aid you don’t need or will never use. Keep in mind that with some golf swing aids, you may still need advice or help from an expert.

There are a number of good golf swing aids on the market today. Before buying any golf swing aid, check with an expert to get an idea of what problem you need to work on first; backlift of golf swing, momentum of downward thrust or stance for example.

Try to concentrate on one golf swing weakness at time. Practice, practice, practice! Take as many private lessons as you can afford with a good golf pro.

Potty Training The Old Fashioned Way

I am sure everybody has seen 4-5 year old children running around in pampers. They talk a mile a minute, yet they refuse to communicate their need to evacuate. They lack the discipline necessary to go and use the toilet or to ask somebody to take them to nearest bathroom.

The children are not to be blamed. Their brains are developing and their life knowledge is minimal. The parents, who are too lazy and not willing to take the time to educate their children, to discipline them and teach the first basic activities that will mark their children for the rest of their lives, are to be blamed.

I want to share with my readers my mother’s old fashion potty training method.

Most pediatricians say that timing is everything. Every authority on potty training claim that the child must be able to hold the urine and stay dry for at least 3 hours before training should start.

Here comes into effect the mother’s devotion, love, commitment and patience. Instead of waiting for the child to give signals, the mother knows how to anticipate the event and to prepare the child for it.

My mother made for me a harness, as soon as I could sit, which was when I was just 6 months old. In the old country such a thing was not available, nor could be bought in a store. Immediately after feeding, or every 2.5-3 hours, she would put the harness on me and tie it to the crib, to keep me stabilized and would plop me on a glass potty. She would also give me a book with color pictures of animals, to look at. Mom would sit next to me, show me the animals and imitate for me the sounds which each animal made, encouraging me to do the same. From time to time, she would also whisper: pee-pee, pee-pee, or caca-caca. When she saw through the potty glass that I was doing my duty, she would repeat those magical words and tell me what a good job I was doing.

As my parents loved me very much, they kept my baby bed in their bedroom, so that they could keep a constant eye on me.

Very soon, while in my bed, I would whisper: pee-pee, pee-pee… My mother would hear me and put me on the potty. At night, my father was on potty duty. He would hear my whisper, wake up and bring the potty for me, in the crib.

When we were going out, to visit friends, when I felt the need, I would whisper either in my mother’s or father’s ear my special words and they would take me to the bathroom.

As I grew and learned to walk, my mother put a small stool next to the toilet and I learned to climb alone on the seat.

There is no frustration in this method. Just a great time spent by the mother and child and a great opportunity to bond, leading to extremely strong, life long love ties.

I wish that all the parents will try this loving method, which will create new generations of disciplined, adapted, clean and obedient children, who will mature into productive and unconflicted adults.

Article Writing - Great Tips On How To Write An Article

So you have figured out that article writing will bring targeted visitors to your website but you are a little fearful of how to go about it. This is going to seem obvious but I know I didn’t do it when I started article writing and I really wish I had.

“What I am talking about is searching out a good article writing mentor.”

So before you say “I don’t have unlimited cash flow to sign up with some expensive program at this point” let me say this. It won’t cost you a dime if you do this.

I am going to recommend you start poking around a few of the big article directories to begin your search. Why? Because the mentor you are needing should be writing regularly in one or all of these directories. Ezine Articles, Article Dashboard, Article Base, and Article Blast in my opinion are the four big kahunas I would recommend at this point. They are the ones I have been getting the most exposure from with my articles. If you are not a free member of these go ahead and sign up because in the future you are going to want to submit your articles to them.

Of course now you are going to read articles on ” how to write an article ” or ” article writing ” for the next little while. Give yourself a week or so and don’t commit to anyone financially. When you find a few good articles written by a potential mentor go ahead and do a search on him in Google. He should be well established and have his articles all over the internet. I am talking about millions of links to his websites. If he doesn’t why would you want to be schooled by him. That’s what you want isn’t it? Lots of links back to your site.

Next thing is step out of the boat onto the water. Chances are he has a free newsletter he sends out or something along those lines. Go ahead and give him your email and sign up. At this point you still haven’t committed a dime.

What you are going to do is glean as much teaching as you can for free from the newsletter or whatever it is you are now getting from him. Pay special attention to how your mentor writes his articles. You’ll be surprised how much you can pick up about writing good titles, keywords, article templates, good topics..etc.

Lastly let me say that no good mentor who has your best intentions in mind demands money up front. He should be willing to build a genuine friendship with you before you ever buy anything from him. I think you should be able to talk with him too. If you can’t kick him to the curb and find a better one. You still will have learned a few good things from him even if you ditch him.

So there is my first golden pointer on writing articles. If you embrace it you won’t make all the mistakes I did when I started article writing.

7 Crucial Reasons Why You Need To Market Yourself As An Expert Starting Today

With the phenomenal rise of media outlets such as cable TV, online networks, blogs, podcasts, and more, never before has the demand for quality information been higher. From magazine publishers to bloggers, expert opinion is needed to provide valuable content for listeners, readers, and web surfers.

As a business owner, you can take what you already know and use it to your advantage by branding yourself as an expert. With the right combination of expertise and visibility, you create credibility. And with credibility, doors open.
Here are 7 crucial reasons why you need to market your expertise starting TODAY.

Reason #1: Experts get thousands of dollars of free PR.

Do the math:
A ¼ page ad can run hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars in a magazine. Studies show that consumers need several impressions of an ad before they take action, so figure on buying at least 3-5 ads. Factor in the cost of a graphic designer, maybe a PR firm, and you are making a major investment.

On the other hand, a 1-2 paragraph quote in the same paper will cost you nothing and takes up the same amount of room. Not only does it validate you as an expert, but also mentions your business and more info on you. Because it is not paid advertising, the consumer sees it as more credible and legitimate. You earned that recognition through your expertise. The snowball effect begins as new customers and other media outlets learn more about you. An expert is born.

Reason #2: Nothing says CREDIBILITY better than the words “Recognized Expert”

Once the word is out that you’re a recognized expert, people will treat you differently and new doors will open. Whether you choose to be an expert for a small local market or an international audience, you now possess a higher level of credibility. Inside you may feel the same, but on the outside others perceive you in a higher esteem. Remember that reporter who could never remember your name? Now that you’re an expert, she wants to sit next to you at every networking event and learn more about your business. You’ll find people waiting in line to get to you. Human nature is a funny thing; now you can use it to impress your peers and position yourself as a leader in your field.

Reason #3: You have a unique perspective and the world wants to hear it!

You may think there’s nothing new to say about your industry. Perhaps you’re convinced what you have to say isn’t good enough or original. Don’t limit your beliefs with what already exists. You do have something unique to say because no one has said it in your voice, with your style, and with your personality. Imagine if no artist ever painted the human form again because Rembrandt did it so well. By withholding your expertise, you are denying your target market the chance to learn from a new perspective.

Reason #4: Information is King!

And you hold the keys to the kingdom. This is the Information Age and your information is not only valued, but is in high demand. From paid speaking engagements to high priced information products, you can reap the benefits from this trend.

Reason #5: Experts save people valuable time.

A downside of the information age is that most people are suffering from information overload. We simply can’t keep up with all that is generated each day. By going public with your expertise, you serve as an information filter. You are taking years of experience and information and condensing it into comprehensible pieces. Rather than someone spending hours exploring websites or buying magazines, one simple article or speech by you may be all they need to grasp a challenging topic. Remember: what comes easily to you doesn’t come easily to others. Use that to your advantage.

Reason #6: Experts get paid more. Lots more…

We all know the law of supply and demand: the more in-demand you are, the less available you are. When your visibility increases, more people are going to want your products or services. Imagine you’re a consultant who charges $150 an hour. You are quoted in a major magazine and flooded with business proposals- more than you can handle. With such an influx, you can now double your hourly rate and people will gladly pay it! Even if you cut down on your work hours, you can still come out ahead. You are now in the position to create the lifestyle you’ve always wanted with your newfound fame.

Reason #7: People are already asking you for advice… so why aren’t you leveraging that?

You are brilliant and may not realize to what extent. Think of how many people call or email you with “quick questions”. A quick questions for you is easy… but imagine how much time the person would have to spend searching if you weren’t around? You can start the steps today to use your expertise to market your business in a whole new, exciting, creative way.

Experts come in all shapes and sizes, preferring different forms of free publicity. Maybe some coverage in the local paper or a trade journal is good enough for you, or perhaps you want to be on national TV. Whatever your goals, assess which avenues are best for you and chart the course to make it happen.

With the right combination of expertise, visibility, and credibility, your business can soar to new heights and you may discover a love for the limelight!

Springtime Flowers Bring The Fresh Outdoors Inside

Temperatures are rising, birds are singing and the brilliantly colored flower blooms have arrived. Springtime is here, and everyone is tempted to play hooky just to get a chance to sit in the sun and watch nature awaken after its winter slumber. “Being stuck in an office or at home can become torture in the Spring,” said Mark, a designer at Vann Jernigan Florist (www.vjflorist.com) located in Atlanta, GA. “But it doesn’t have to be. Simply adding a bouquet of flowers to any decor can bring a bit of the outdoors inside,” he added.

When choosing a springtime bouquet, Vann Jernigan Florist recommends flowers that are in season and bred for longevity. “Flowers that have been crossbred and grown out of season are not as beautiful, fragrant and just don’t last, plus they cost much more than the natural, hardy variety,” said Diana Cochran, the owner of Vann Jernigan Florist.

Springtime Flowers

Tulips with natural hues such as purple, yellow, white and red, are the queens of spring flowers. Make Tulips the centerpiece of your springtime bouquet and discover what the Dutch already know about these beauties. Tulips are the regal announcement of springtime’s arrival.

Snapdragons with their sweet candy-like smell add a bit of childish playfulness to any bouquet. Add a luscious bundle of these soft hued flowers and think of cotton candy on a warm summer day.

Gerber Daisies are just plain fun, with their whimsical pedals and vibrant colors. Placing even one of these in a strategic position can transform any drab space into a cheerful place for the senses.

Vann Jernigan Florist has been providing the highest quality flowers to individuals and businesses such as Coca-Cola, Turner Sports, COX Radio Atlanta, The City of Atlanta and government offices of the State of Georgia for over 45 years. Contact Vann Jernigan Florist (http://www.vjflorist.com) at 800-562-9825 or visit the shop located at 1529-C Piedmont Ave. NE, Atlanta, GA 30324 for all your floral needs.

Sudden Hair Loss: Identifying The Causes Of Sudden Hair Loss

Sudden hair loss is characterized by the sudden loss of large amounts of hair. For example, large amounts of hair left on the pillow after sleeping and large amounts of hair coming out when washing or brushing your hair. And we’re not talking about a few hairs here. In the case of sudden hair loss typically large chunks of hair fall out on a regular basis, often times leading to significant bald areas on the scalp.

And while there can be other causes of sudden hair loss such as the side effects of some medications and diseases such as diabetes and localised infection of the scalp, sudden hair loss is almost always caused by a sudden emotional shock or trauma. Sudden hair loss doesn’t discriminate against men or women and can occur in both sexes although it typically is more common in males.

The cause of sudden hair loss that accompanies trauma is due to sudden hormonal imbalances occurring as a consequence of the shock of the trauma. Adrenaline gets dumped into the system leading to erratic behaviour of the other hormones, which if not addressed quickly can lead to a host of health complaints.

Like most acute conditions, the causes of sudden hair loss need to be identified as early as possible in order for the appropriate treatment to begin. A medical practitioner needs to be consulted in order to rule out any other diseases that may be causing the sudden hair loss, and also to make adjustments to any medication the patient may be taking that may also be contributing to their loss of hair.

In order to arrive at the definite cause of the sudden hair loss, various tests will need to be performed. Blood tests are typically used to evaluate nutritional levels, hormonal imbalances, and any possible disease states that may be causing the hair to fall out.

Just as there are numerous causes for hair loss that occurs over a period of time, if any treatment is to be undertaken the appropriate cause must be determined. In some cases an incorrect treatment, my actually exacerbate the problem.

In regard to treatment, the sudden loss of hair is almost always occurring due to, something that is happening in the present time or in the very recent past. And as such, whatever that cause is, it needs to be addressed rather than simply prescribing hair loss medications and hair loss shampoos.

While it is certainly possible in the case of long-standing, hair loss to self prescribe and treat yourself (sometimes quite successfully) sudden hair loss is a medical condition that needs medical evaluation and treatment.

An added problem that needs to be considered with this kind of hair loss is the psychological impact that the hair loss itself is having. If the cause of the sudden hair loss is determined to be psychologically or emotionally based, then worrying and stressing over the hair loss, while being a totally normal reaction that most people would have, will only make the problem worse. A condition caused by stress, rarely improves by being more stressed about it.
