Have you ever dreamed you were in prison? Then some part of you is imprisoned. There are many ways in which this metaphor can apply to our lives. We explored some of them in a recent prison dream that was discussed in a telephone group, “TeleDream.” Here is how the dream began:

“I am in a prison(1). Inside, the grounds are like a university campus(2), with green lawns(3) and benches(4) next to old buildings(5). The whole place is surrounded by a thick-barred black metal fence(6). I have just arrived(7). We take turns going to get groceries(8) escorted by a prison guard(9)…”

Every dream speaks to anyone who investigates it, since dreams originate in the Universal realms of the Unconscious. The group exploring this dream discovered dozens of layers of meaning, some unique to each individual. See if any of the nine universal themes we found apply to you:

1. “I am in a prison.” And so is everyone in some manner: To the degree that your job or family confines and restrains you, they imprison you. If your body is wounded, disowned, or a burden to you, your spirit may be imprisoned by the physical. If you long to follow some dream which is prohibited by others,

you may be imprisoned by society. If your dreams seem hopeless or ridiculous, you may be imprisoned by your own attitudes. Most of us are imprisoned by fears, by doubt, by ignorance.

2. “Inside, the grounds are like a university campus”: Inside us the “ground” of our existence is the “Universe” itself. Our individual identity is alternately a prison and a portal: “Every man is a doorway through which the Infinite passes into the finite” (Emerson) The human personality consists of a spark of divinity imprisoned in materiality.

3. “green lawns”: One group member noted that green is the color of growth and spring; to the extent that our growth and blossoming is restricted, we are in prison. Any “failure to thrive” imprisons some potential. Another dreamer mentioned that green is the color of the heart chakra; if our feelings, hopes and dreams were not imprisoned within us, would we need so many reminders to “follow our dreams” or to “know thyself.” A third group member playfully commented that “the grass always looks greener on the other side of the razor-wire fence.”

4. “Benches”: are for waiting, for sitting it out and they can be a valuable respite or the symbol of failing to “take a stand.” Being “put on the bench” in sports is to be taken out of the game. How are we “sitting on the bench” in our own lives, the dream invites us to ask.

5. The grass of the “green lawns” is part of nature, while the bench, the buildings and the fence are man-made. Often our natural tendencies are surrounded by that which has been built up by culture, family rules and traditions, religious beliefs and external authority. There are many built environments like schools and factories which educate and employ but simultaneously imprison. In the movie “Cousin Cousine” a character attends an outdoor wedding but skips the church reception that follows, saying “I don’t trust God when you get him indoors.”

6. The “whole place” might be that place within us all, in which we are whole. Every being carries the imprint of wholeness, like the oak tree implicit in the acorn. Each gender has within, the qualities of its opposite. Each child brings into this world a potential for full being and expression which is only rarely fulfilled. Whatever prevents our wholeness is the “black metal fence” of shadow and restriction and resistance. Poverty is a prison. Prejudice is a prison. Partiality is a prison; gated communities are the prison of privilege.

7. This dream came to a devoted student of dream work whose past efforts had activated and liberated parts of her psyche that had been stored in the “protective custody” of the unconscious since childhood. The release of fresh consciousness that has “just arrived” is the hallmark of ongoing growth. Dreams release unrealized potentials into the adult psyche whenever we are ready to do the work of reclamation. It is our own innocent consciousness that recognizes our over-adapted adult attitudes as a prison. This fresh energy is just what helps to release us from the prison of habit and limitation. Prisons are secure, and sometimes, security is a prison.

8. The dreamer noted that many of the important projects she began had to “take turns” and could not be consistently maintained. Thus there were cycles of meditation and phases of healthy exercise and periodic returns to creative writing. The dream shows these as activities that bring nourishment, the “groceries” that feed the soul. Such activities must often take turns when much of our psyche is imprisoned.

9. Not only do we all contain hopes and abilities that are imprisoned within, but we are all both the prisoner and the prison guard. Our own attitudes and habits imprison us. Our guardedness is our prison’s guard. One becomes a prisoner only after being judged. Within the mind it may be our own judgemental views that bar us from authenticity and freedom, imprisoning us without just cause.

Is not each human ego is a prison of the spirit? Our every fear imprisons and limits our willingness to dare and our ability to love. Our current identity is always the prison of our future self and our full potential. How much “time do you have to do” before you earn your freedom? Prison dreams challenge us to discover how we are confined and how we could break out and be free.

You have probably heard the wise axiom “the three most important things in real estate are location, location, location…” But as Donald Trump says, it’s really “the deal, the deal, the deal.” When my wife and I are looking at properties and we see one that’s just terrible and my wife hates it, I like to say, would you take it if they gave it to you? If she says sure I say how about for ten thousand dollars? I work my way up. Everything has value. You have to look at a property with its potential in mind. You have to balance what you can get it for with its potential worth and how much effort it will take you to achieve that potential.

~True Story~
The best deal I ever did was our second house; it was a V.A. repo. It was a 20 year old double-wide on an acre in the country. It was totally dilapidated, I got it for $16,000 and I used a home equity line of credit from my first house to buy it. It took me three months full time to rehab it and $20,000 in materials, I bought almost everything I needed to rehab it at a home improvement auction, and I bought high quality materials at a very low price. So when the home was finished it was a lot nicer than when it was new. We sold it last year for $85,000 a profit of $59,000. What a deal!

The most common mistake made by new investors is to buy at too high a price. It is said: you make your money when you buy.
It’s easy to get exited and impatient or find a house you really want, its not good to really want any house, what you should really want is a good deal.

HUD Repo Sales

I buy most of my houses through HUD which is FHA. (Federal housing Authority) HUD is the only one that I know of that has a formula that they use when considering bids and you need to understand it in order to play the game properly. Keep in mind that the people to whom you are submitting a bid are Government Bureaucrats and are just pushing paper around and going by a pre-determined formula. So don’t think you can tempt them with low ball offers. They don’t care. When a house first appears on their site it has a listing date. For the first couple of weeks it is listed as OWNER OCCUPIED that means only people who are planning to live in the property can bid. After that anyone can bid. (like investors.)

After four or five weeks they will drop it ten percent, then five more weeks another ten percent. They usually don’t drop it after the second drop but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t accept a bid dropped another ten percent after the fifteenth week. But that would be unusual. You also want to watch for mistakes in their appraisals. They do so many and so fast that they often make mistakes in the value of the house. Sometimes they ask too much, and the house sits for months. But sometimes they undervalue the house and if you jump on it you can really make out, especially if you are an owner occupant and you can bid before the investors can.

The HUD formula also accepts up to 5% to pay for closing costs. So make sure when you make an offer it says HUD to pay 5% towards closing costs, or offer 5% less. So when you find a house and you determine that it needs to drop in price before you can do a good deal. Count weeks from the listing date that’s on the web site. Count four weeks, and in the forth week start biding fifteen percent below listing price. 10% for the coming drop and 5% for closing costs. Bid every day till it drops. What happens is the HUD guy rejects bids every day, until one day its time to drop the price and if there is a bid on his desk that day he will accept it. He won’t even bother to list the price drop on the internet. But I hear you say if I wait till it drops somebody else might get it!! Yes and they will pay to much so let them have it. Yes you will loose houses to other bidders, but you won’t get stuck with a house that isn’t a deal. Better to loose three or four houses and wait for the deal. Watch for houses that come back on the market. Once your bid is accepted you have about sixty days to finance, after that they will re list it. You can usually pick it up at the reduced price at that time. I have bought three of my houses after they have been re listed. I always keep an eye on the houses that I like, but have been bought, to see if they come back up. HUD has a lot of repos and I can usually find a good deal if I wait. The main advantage is knowing how the formula works. Work the system.

~True Story~

I once bid on a property were the ad said “house uninhabitable due to mold.” Pipes had broken upstairs while it was vacant, and flooded the whole down stairs. They had it listed at the lot value, $40,000. I figured it was a dump but I went to look at it any way. It was in a beautiful neighborhood and it was worth over $200,000 fixed up. I had a contractor look at it and he said it would take $20,000 to repair all the drywall and flood damage, maybe another $10,000 to fix up. I bid $55,000 it went for $85,000. Someone got a deal.

Apparently, this is difficult for most men to do. Sitting down and talking is not something you are naturally wired for. But you can learn. Further, it’s impossible to have intimate or important conversations with dogs barking, kids crying, or phones ringing. If your girl is trying to talk to you, handle any emergencies, turn off the cell phone and TV, and give her your full attention. If you do, you will make her feel that she matters.

4. Believing Her

Women want to be believed by men. Men tend to be (or think they are) more analytical than women. Therefore, when she speaks, and is trying to tell you something important, you may have a tendency to dismiss it. If you know how to balance your brain with your heart, and listen with kindness, you will find that what she has to say is relevant to your life with her. If you are with someone you don’t trust, then her words will have no affect on you. (And you should be asking yourself why you are there.) But if you love and trust her-then believe her.

5. Doing What She Asks

Women want you to do what they ask at crucial times. She doesn’t expect you to “fix” everything, but there are times when her requests call for action. I know, I know-some of you are probably smirking by now. But if you implement what she says, you will have an extremely happy partner. This statement assumes that you are with a good person; that she is rational most of the time; that she does not ask the impossible or the ridiculous of you; and that she is equally giving. Some men find this hard to do because they feel that to do this, they are being a wimp. Believe me, she wants you to have backbone. And there is every opportunity in all parts of your life to exercise that quality. She isn’t asking for you to give up anything. She is asking to be heard and cared about. If you trust her character and if she tells the truth…do what she asks.

Go on and try these suggestions. If you are with a happy lady…you are going to be a happy man. This is what women want.

Never paraphrase or rewrite material. This is the worst type of behavior a freelance writer can have. Paraphrasing or rewriting is barely a cut above copying someone else’s work and pasting into your article. Have some pride and integrity. If you’re going to be a professional writer, you shouldn’t be earning money off of someone else’s hard work and efforts. Learn about a subject until you know everything about it. Then write.

Use action phrasing and assertive language. Be positive and proactive and let that show in what you write. Don’t write, ‘You will know that effective writing may be a good way to try to make some money.’ That’s weak. Instead, write, ‘Effective writing is a good way to make money.’

Stay informative and be concise. Self-indulgent language and flowery prose is best saved for fiction works. Remember who the target audience is for articles. Most of the time, these are individuals seeking advice, help, or information. Articles should provide that to readers. How imaginative and creative you can be when you write has no place in the web content article market.

Edit, edit, edit. Check your work over until you’re sure there aren’t any typos, punctuation errors, or grammar problems. Word-processing software such as Microsoft word has great features to cut out weak writing and mistakes. Don’t rely on a software program to correct a skill you should know by heart. Editing software isn’t perfect, but your article needs to be.

Set it aside and read it another day. Many beginning writers slam down 500 words and send out the article without setting it aside. Always wait at least 12 hours before submitting anything. Read your work over again. Does the text still make sense? Did you write in the emotional mood that you were feeling when you first wrote the article?

Read your article out loud. Something may look fantastic in black and white, but verbalize it and you may find that nothing makes sense. Reading aloud catches plenty of strange or awkward phrasing, short sentences, or their counterparts, run-on sentences.

Be proud. You’re a professional writer. That’s a cool job and not one everyone can do! Have confidence in your skills and talent. Self-confidence and pride shows through in your writing and in communication with clients. You’re doing something you love and earning money.
