Email marketing gets results but for the kind of results that marketers rave about it’s essential to develop targeted email marketing campaigns - campaigns that identify and reach the people most likely to respond.

Without effective targeting, your email campaign - any marketing, for that matter - will be a hit and miss affair resulting in low response rates and wasted marketing dollars. It will also be a complete waste of the key strength of email marketing: that it can be targeted more effectively than any other marketing.

It simply doesn’t make sense to broadcast to all and sundry when you can focus your efforts - and your dollars - on the people most likely to buy.

Identify your target markets

To identify your target markets, first break down or “segment” your market into groups of people likely to have similar needs and wants. Segmentation can be along any lines you like. For instance, by age group, gender, employment status, location, lifestyle, attitudes, concerns, ethnicity, skill level, and so on.

The idea is to recognise that there is no such thing as an “average” customer. Different types of people have different needs and wants. Consequently, some groups will find the particular (and ideally, unique) benefits of your products and services more appealing than others. These are your target markets.

Because email marketing can reach very specific types of people you can take segmentation to some lengths, for highly-targeted email marketing campaigns. There will almost always be an email list/newsletter to match.

However, target markets must remain large enough to justify the time and effort if not the expense (targeted email marketing is cheap) of a dedicated email campaign.

Ideally, you will hit on market segments that are a good size and also underserved by competitors - a niche marketing opportunity. This is why it is worthwhile spending some time on segmentation.

Create a targeted email marketing message

Having identified your target markets, don’t drop the ball with your message.

You will need to develop a separate email message or “creative” for each target market, focusing on their particular needs and wants, and how your particular products or services can fulfil them. Bring your “unique selling proposition” into play, to demonstrate how you can fulfil them better than your competitors.

It’s also important to speak your target market’s language. Use an appropriate style and tone, and words which have the greatest impact with that market. For example, “affordable,” “stylish,” “durable,” “easy-to-use,” “honest,” “fast.”

In short, create an email that is highly-relevant and therefore highly-interesting to your target market.

Write an effective subject line

There is plenty of advice available on writing marketing email subject lines. In summary, they should be straightforward, contain your business name, be both informative and relevant, and as short as possible. They should capture the essence of your email. For this reason they are best written after not before the message.

An excellent side-benefit of targeted email marketing is that it is much easier to write with specific types of people in mind than for mass audiences. Great news if like most people you hate writing promotional copy.

Select targeted email marketing lists

The next step in your targeted email marketing campaign is to find email lists that reach your target market. For most small and home businesses, the most affordable option will be email newsletters (ezines) with a subscriber profile matching your target market. Solo ads - emails sent to subscribers separately from the newsletter - are highly-affordable.

Most email newsletters are listed in directories, such as FindEzines, Zinester, EzineHub and the Directory of Ezines. (Search for “ezine directory”.)

Target the right time

With the key elements of your targeted email marketing campaign in place, there is one more factor to consider before you send: timing.

An advantage of email marketing is that campaigns can be timed to the minute. Think about your target market’s lifestyle to choose the best time to send. Ideally, it will be a time when they not only check their email but also have time to give it their attention.

For moms this might be late in the evening when the kids are in bed. For young professionals with an active social life, it might be lunchtime, when they are neither working or out on the town. Trust your common sense on this one. Statistics on the most popular email opening times are misleading.

Test your targeted email marketing campaign

My piece of final advice on targeted email marketing is to test your campaign. Ad testing is standard procedure for large companies. Thanks to the affordability of email, it’s an option for small businesses too.

Once you have perfected your targeted email marketing campaign you can invest in more expensive lists and roll out your campaign with confidence.

There are many novels out there about slavery and life in the southern United States in the early 1800s. So I wasn’t expecting anything great or spectacular out of this book. But “A New Dawn Rising” was a pleasant surprise. It took a new twist on the slavery issue that really made me think.

Slavery has always been about skin color. Those people with dark skin were treated differently based on it. What if a white man was born into circumstances that made him a slave? How will the others around him treat him? Will it be based on the term “slave” or on his skin color?

In “A New Dawn Rising” John Connolley is born as a slave to Mister Jacob Barlow. He is white. He is treated like a son by his master until the fateful day of his fourteenth birthday when Mr. Barlow reacts to a bad situation by treating him like a slave. In order to maintain respect as a slave-owner, he must follow his own rules when one of his slaves disobeys. And by doing so he loses the love of a young man who will never forget his station in life again.

When John is almost thirty years old he has a chance to work toward buying his freedom and owning his own land. Under the watchful eye of his master, he goes out into the world under the guise of a free man. John’s strange ways and refusal to own slaves are confusing to the townspeople, and keeping his secret is harder than it seems. On top of that Mr. Barlow is asking John to forgive him, while still treating him like a slave.

Patricia Marie Budd has done her research for this book. She has the demeanor and voicing of the characters of this time period down to perfection. She even goes into great detail on fashionable dress of the period in one section of the book. The characters are well developed with the good guys likeable and the bad guys despicable.

I would recommend “A New Dawn Rising” to anyone who likes a good read that really makes you think. The topic of slavery is not a light one. The book has its intense moments. It can also be funny and romantic and carries you away into a time and place of a not to long ago America. This book is rich in context about slavery, relationships, social mores, and above all forgiveness. Patricia Marie Budd unfolds the chapters in a way that keeps you hanging on by a thread and holding in your breath.

Toys have been an important part of childhood since early civilization and while children today are much different than those thousands of years ago, many of their favorite toys are similar to those that have been around for centuries. In 1990, Canyon earned her B.S. in Sociology from Cornell University (Ithaca, NY). After graduation, she studied massage therapy but soon realized that she was not interested in making her living that way. She needed something more. For three years, Canyon was “floundering,” as she describes it. But in 2003, after thinking hard about what would give her a competitive edge, she decided to begin her own business and embark on her career in acupuncture. “I’m going to try,” she thought, “and if it fails, I’ll do something else.” And so she thought about what she liked and which particular group of people she wanted to market her services to. That’s when she realized came up with the idea for “acupuncture for athletes” and “people with active lifestyles.”

Though she says the most challenging part of her career in acupuncture was and always has been the business aspects, she took the initiative to create the business from scratch without help — not even from a PR firm. “I figured, ‘I’m smart, I can use my common sense.’” A key marketing tactic is using her detailed Web site to garner clients. “They don’t ask questions — they just make an appointment,” she says.

In a recent article by the Bureau of National Affairs some staggering information was reported. In the article we learn that over 25% of appraisers admitted to inflating approximately 50% of their appraisals! Approximately 55% of appraisers reported that they are pressured by realtor’s or mortgage brokers to meet predetermined values (contract sales prices). According to Fannie Mae, 99.5% of appraisals meet the contract price. So there you have it. Properties are appraised everyday for amounts significantly in excess of their real values to meet pressures for sales prices and financing. This is problematic because of what it does not only to the property in question, but to the market as a whole.

Consider the fact that one of the most common appraisal techniques used is the Market Value approach. If a minimum of 12.5% of appraisals (25% of the appraisers inflate 50% of their values) are inflated, and those appraisals are used to justify other property sales prices, then those inflated values are used to justify additional inflated values, (etc. etc. etc.) how long does it take before virtually all properties are using artificially inflated comparable numbers to justify sales prices.

It is no wonder that the housing market has taken a downturn. People are paying too much and a lot of them simply can’t afford what they have bought. In addition, this fact alone will have kept many many buyers out of the market unfairly. While you will not see this article on the front page of any newspaper, it is a very big deal. It is fraud. I don’t know a nice way to say it.

I do not want to imply that all appraisers are derelict in their duties. However, when any appraiser accesses past sales data in order to produce comparable values, and that data has been arbitrarily inflated, even the majority of appraisers who are honest and fair will produce appraisal values higher than they really should be. These good appraisers are victims of the fraud just like you and I.

So what should we do about this? Do your homework. Buy whatever you want for you to live in, but don’t buy any investment real estate because an appraisal says the asking price is fair. Buy investment real estate based on its operations and the logical progression of the property. Run the numbers! Get the education you need to understand the analysis process and compile the data necessary to do it correctly. With accurate numbers, you can buy right and not have to worry about what anybody else thinks a property is worth. Pay what you think its worth and not a penny more. The quality of your portfolio will be based on the quality of your purchase decisions. Make ‘em good.

I have been a science fiction fan ever since the movie Star Wars came out. I have also been a fan of Kevin Spacey since the movie seeing the Usual Suspects. So when I heard about the Sci-Fi movie K-Pax starring Spacey I knew I had to watch it.

It turns out that the movie K-Pax was based on the novel by Genre Brewer. The story is about an alien named Prot who travels time and space. He arrives on Earth and ends up finding himself in the Manhattan Psychiatric Institute.

Of course, no one believes that Prot is an alien. But then Dr. Powel finds himself amazed with Prot’s knowledge of how to travel at speeds faster then that of the speed of light. Prot also has an amazing knowledge of constellations and shows where his planet is from in incredible detail. This makes everyone begin to wonder where is this Prot really from, and how does he have this ability. In the movie, Prot is played by Kevin Spacey and the doctor is played by Jeff Bridges.

This story is both funny and heartwarming. It really makes you appreciate the wonder and the magic of this world we live in. I have found that reading the book or seeing the movie is not the only way to enjoy K-Pax. A great way to enjoy K-Pax is to listen to it as an audiobook.

Audiobooks are great for everyone. You can enjoy them virtually anytime. They are great for listening to as you drive, take the train, walk the dog, or just sit around the house. My personal favorite time to listen to audiobooks is while driving to work or while on a road trip.

Today, the best way to pick up an audiobook is to download it from the Internet. Audiobooks can be downloaded as mp3 files then they can be played on your computer, burned to a disc, or loaded to an iPod. K-Pax is definitely a great modern sci-fi classic that would be a welcome edition to any collection. And it is not just for science fiction fans, Prot’s story can be enjoyed by anyone.
