Taking Your Bodybuilding Workout Past The Plateau

You’ve been working your workout plan and are experiencing some frustration because you have noticed that you are maintaining your weight, staying at the same strength for months now and it’s worrying you! Stop the frustration - you are not doing anything wrong, you have just experienced a “plateau” you need to take your workout plan to the next level; here is how to do that:

Your Warm up:

It is important to do a warm-up before each of your exercise sets. Utilize approximately 50% of the weight you are going to be using for your main workout. A good warm-up is to do 4 to 6 reps of this 50% weight. You want to do enough to just warm up your muscles.

Exercise Sets:

Work your plan of exercise sets based on your routine, which should include the following:

Abs, barbell bicep curls, barbell overhead shoulder presses, bench presses, dumbbell pullovers, leg curls, leg extensions, standing calf raises, squats, weighted dips, and also weighted pull-ups.

Workout Tips

Never, ever workout without a workout partner

Time your workout to last no longer than 45 minutes. This includes your rest periods in between sets. The caution here is that if you workout longer than 45 minutes the hormone, cortisol will increase and this will be counter-productive to your goal. Stay focused on working your sets with rests in between sets and accomplishing your workout plan within your 45 minute time limit; get in, work hard, stay focused, get out.

Choose your weights based on achieving the number of reps and not any more than that number. You will know you have chosen wisely because you will physically be unable to complete another rep.

Do not cheat on your form - concentrate on achieving perfect form each and every rep. Use full range of motion and on the way down (2 seconds time span with 2 seconds on the way up). Absolutely no weight jerking allowed. You want a smooth up and down motion. If you experience jerks, move back down to the lighter weight.

Stay in motion during each set. Rest periods are for resting not during your sets. Watch especially during your squats to not lock your knees, arms or legs and rest even for a second. Keep the smooth motion going without a hesitation.

Do not stop when you reach bottom of any exercise. It’s tempting at the bottom of a curl to stop - but do not give in to this temptation.

Well too much of anything is unhealthy and leads to weight gain. Ask yourself, why are you eating? What are you trying to escape? Then talk to a trained practitioner about your issues. Get yourself away from eating to temporarily make you feel good but increase your weight and not solve the problem that you are running away from.

Get your eating patterns reviewed by a trained nutritionist or dietician. I once had a client who ate business dinners a lot and felt it was leading to her weight gain. My question to everyone in this situation is, “Why do you feel you have to finish your dinner at a business meeting?” You can either leave half or ask for it to be wrapped to go. Make sure you are aware of how much you are eating at any given meal. If you go for seconds or thirds, wait and ask yourself, is this going to be too much and am I eating out of anxiety than hunger? More than likely your first plate of food was sufficient to satisfy nutritional requirements and hunger. If you feel hungry after eating a meal, then wait half an hour. This is the time it takes for your stomach to record how full it is and send that information back to your brain. Drink a glass of water in the meantime as well.

As a marketing consultant and owner of a marketing firm, a big mistake I see businesses make is they do not take into consideration the value of repeat sales when they review if their advertising is profitable.

When determining if your advertising is profitable, you need to look at advertising as a long-term investment, just like buying stocks, real estate, or mutual funds. When evaluating your advertising you need to take into consideration repeat sales from each new customer your advertising produces. Nearly all businesses earn the majority of their sales and profits on repeat sales, NOT first time sales. Understanding this concept is one of the secrets to building a successful business.

For example, let’s say you run a small quarter page ad in your local shopper coupon magazine. This small ad costs you $300. From that single ad you attract three new customers who each buy $50 worth of your merchandise. From that information you would think that you had a loss of $100 on that ad because you paid $300 for it but you only generated $150 in sales. But let’s look at the long-term effect of those three new customers.

Let’s say that each of those three new customers purchases an additional $250 of merchandise from you over the next 11-months. When you take that into consideration, your $300 ad has now generated $900 in sales. And, what if each of those three customers purchases an additional $300 of merchandise from you the following year? Now, your original $300 ad has generated $1,800 in sales over a 24-month period. To put that into perspective, if you bought $300 worth of mutual funds and in 2-years your $300 investment was worth $1,800, you would be jumping for joy! That is why you need to view the profitability of your advertising on a long-term scale, not on a short-term 1-2 month scale. Advertising is an investment to generate long-term customers and repeat sales. Your focus as a business owner must always be on generating faithful long-term customers, NOT one-time sales.

Let’s broaden the picture even more. Let’s say one of your three new customers loved your merchandise so much that she told two of her friends about you, and her two friends each becomes a long-term customer of your business. And, what if those two friends each buys a few hundred dollars worth of merchandise from you over the next couple of years? Do you now see the tremendous long-term value of that $300 ad you placed?

Now that you have a better understanding of advertising as an investment, it is vitally important that you track the source of every new customer (i.e., did they find you in the yellow pages, direct mail, radio, Internet, etc.). Whenever you talk to a new customer you must ask the customer, “How did you hear about us?” Then, you need to track the source of that customer in a spreadsheet or a CRM system and track how many sales that customer makes over time. This is the only way you can truly determine if an advertising strategy is working. Yes, this takes time but it is worth it. And, a good CRM software application can make this tracking very easy.

In summary, before you throw in the towel on your advertising strategies because they are not immediately generating a profit, you must first understand that value of a new customer over time. Jon Phillips is a trader in government bonds for the Bank of Manhattan. He has come up with a get rich quick scheme by cornering the market on bond trading on a particular day. As long as nothing goes awry, he should be free and clear and able to leave his job a very rich man. However to do this his bank has to make a deal with a very shady U.K. Trading Company. Jon needs them to help buy up all the bonds. The day arrives and things are going great. Jon has control of all the bonds and is just getting ready to start selling them off, when word comes down that the head of the Federal Reserve has had heart trouble. This news throws the market into frenzy and Jon has to sell all his bonds at a loss.

Jon knows that his time at the bank is now limited; he expects to be fired. Sure enough, he is called for by the board and is let go. Jon’s friend Robert Baldwin dies in a strange accident right before he is let go. Then there is a smear campaign to destroy Jon’s character, saying he is a drunkard, cross dresser and drug addict. He emails an old friend Penny Jordan and asks her to look into the U.K. Trading Company for him. Jon’s brother David comes to visit on his way back to Australia. The brothers had not seen each other for a long time. While Jon was gone David was killed in his stead. From then on Jon goes after the people who framed him and killed his friend and his brother. As a chameleon changes color Jon is able to change his appearance and stay one step ahead of those pursuing him. With the help of sharks, a sabotaged mainsail, a hunt in the English countryside, and a sabotaged plane. From the U.S. to England to Australia greed, murder and romance are played out.

Jon slips away to anonymity and tries to find ways to launder his ill- gotten gains. There is plenty more to the story but you will have to read the book to find out.

“Chameleon” is a very well written book that keeps you in suspense with all the different characters and twists and turns it takes. The writer shows he has knowledge of the stock market and the trading that goes on. I would recommend the book highly and thoroughly enjoyed it.
