Just as the car crested a hill it stopped. The engine went silent and the car just coasted. Thinking quickly, Simon managed to steer onto the shoulder of the road before he came to a complete halt. It was only then that he noticed the needle of the fuel gauge resting comfortably at its lowest position.

He climbed out of the car and looked around. Nothing. He was an only an hour from the city but it might have it been a day for all the signs of life on offer. The sun, still high in the sky, washed the colour out of the landscape and brought with it a stillness as every creature but Simon hid from the heat.

Simon glanced at his watch. He was busy. He was always busy. This trip out of town was meant to be quick. Two hours out and back, an hour for the meeting. Hardly half a day. And he’d got heaps of work done on the way up - at least a dozen phone calls. He’d made a few on the way back too, until his phone finally gave out.

The phone! It was in his hand. He’d reached for it instinctively, thinking that Kathy would be able to organise something. But, of course, it was still flat. It stared at him as dumbly as the cows in the paddock next to him. Now what?

He slumped backward against the car, looking back and forth along the road. He waited. And waited. The heat quickly became unbearable.

Finally a glint of reflected sunlight in the distance announced a vehicle coming towards him. To Simon’s great relief, the driver, sporting a helpful face, pulled up beside him. He looked like a farmer, probably about Simon’s father’s age.

Simon explained his predicament and without hesitation the farmer suggested he jump in. “Come back to the house with me,” he said. “We’ll get some fuel to get you out of trouble. You can use the phone and have a drink: you look like you need one. My errand can wait until tomorrow.”

It was dark and cool inside the farmer’s house. Sensing Simon’s urgency, his host pointed to the phone.

“Kathy, I’m going to be late for that 4 o’clock,” he said without ceremony. After explaining the situation, he went on. “I’ve still got that proposal to finish and email off before the end of the day. Could you look through my diary for tomorrow and prepare anything I might need. It’s a full day of meetings. We’ll have to have that chat you wanted a bit later - sorry.”

He put down the receiver and turned back to the kitchen. The farmer beckoned Simon to sit down, passing him a welcome drink.

“You’re obviously a very busy man. Lots to do - and quickly.” He paused for a few moments then continued, “How will you know when you’re too busy?”

Caught off-guard by the question, Simon looked away. “I … I don’t know.” He glanced at his watch. “It’s time I got going,” he prompted.

“I was like you once,” said the farmer casually as he made to leave. “I was running a small business in the next town. And I was always in a hurry. Once - on this very road - I drove straight past a bloke who’d broken down. Didn’t even see him. It wasn’t until my brother picked him up hours later and brought him back here - badly dehydrated - that I realised he’d been there at all.

“It was then I understood I had a ‘busyness limit’. And I had passed it. What was the point of getting so much done if it was going to make me that self-absorbed?”

Simon was silent as the farmer drove him back to his car. He liked being busy and wasn’t very comfortable being challenged on just how busy was too busy. But in his heart of hearts he had to admit he probably wouldn’t have stopped to help someone in his situation this afternoon. He wasn’t comfortable with that thought either.

He thought about Kathy. She’d been asking for a meeting with him for two weeks but he’d kept fobbing her off. There was always something else that needed to be done.

Preparing to drive away, he noticed, for the first time, the country around him, golden in the afternoon sun. He looked at the farmer, “I guess I’ve passed my ‘busyness limit’ too. I’m sure I could ease off the pace at least a little.” As he drove off he yelled back: “It might even help me to notice a low fuel gauge in future!”

Raising the Bar - Continuing Advances In Voip Technology

VOIP technology has advanced to a stage where VOIP is no longer an interesting start up, but a strong and valid technological force that offers so many benefits, not the least of which is huge savings in long distance phone calls. Many businesses have gone from expensive and complicated intra-office phone systems to switching to a VOIP system because of the increase in efficiency and strong decrease in cost. The continuing advancement of VOIP technology is what makes this possible.

Residential VOIP refers to the software that allows you to download the technology onto your computer and then communicate with family, friends, and acquaintances in the same way you would on the telephone, but your computer is used as a telephone instead. Because the technology is based on phone communication through the Internet, anyone you want to contact will also need to download the same technological software on their computers, but don’t worry, this is actually very easy!

What if you still want to call people who don’t have VOIP? One of the smartest technological advances by the companies encouraging the development of VOIP technology was creating an adaptor. An adaptor hooks up to a regular phone, and hooks it up to your VOIP so you can still use the residential VOIP to call any phone, whether it is a VOIP phone, a landline, or even a cell phone! This little piece of equipment allows you all the benefits of VOIP without any of the potential restrictions that could make people hesitant to invest in this service.

With the advancement of portable VOIP phones (Vonage is perhaps the best known company that provides this service), the question has been brought up of whether or not VOIP phones will be able to ever replace cell phones, and what would the difference be? While the technology is there for this to happen, the infrastructure isn’t there yet; though it is getting closer with each passing day.

The advantage of this would be that VOIP would be far cheaper, since long distance wouldn’t cost nearly anything and there would be no restriction on minutes. A wireless VOIP phone is also referred to as a “Wi-Fi VOIP phone,” and needs networks in the same way wireless internet needs networks, to work, but more are popping up every day, and many cities plan to increase the number of hot spots, which would make this a more and more viable option.

Many cell phone companies, sensing ahead of time what this could mean for them if they refuse to adapt, now design phones that not only work as regular cell phones, but also have features that allow the user to switch to their VOIP account if they are close enough to a hot spot. While complete VOIP is a long ways off, the beginning structures are there, and as the VOIP technology improves, it would not be surprising to head towards the day where VOIP isn’t a side game, but the main choice available to all phone users.

Ever wondered why it takes you so long to find the information you need on your corporate computer system? That’s if you can find it at all. Did you know that the tooth fairy could be partly to blame?

The tooth fairy visited our house just last week. Nothing particularly new in that: it must have been about her twentieth visit. The interesting thing is that the famous fairy is still trading our daughters’ off-cast teeth even though she is no longer believed in. It’s a classic case of suspended disbelief.

You see, our daughters have never confessed that they don’t believe in these small people with big wallets.

They’re smart enough to know that if they were to admit any real doubt, the fairy’s financier (i.e. me) would have a reason to cease payments. And with half a dozen teeth to go, well, you can do the maths.

So suspending their disbelief is essentially an economic decision. It wouldn’t be the first time that economic sensibilities have distorted a belief system.

Since the 1960s, vendors of management information systems (MIS) have been promising organizations centralized information and simplified planning. As the years have gone on, these systems have become more expensive while the promises associated with them have become more expansive.

These days you will be promised detailed tables and charts showing you exactly how well your business or unit is running. Instantly - and all at the click of a button.

The reality tends to be less magical. In 2007, the truly effective MIS is still about as rare as Tinkerbell and her fang finding friends.

Consider these insights sampled from a recent survey by Accenture of over 1,000 managers in the US and UK:

* Middle managers spend up to two hours a day searching for information;

* More than half of what they find is of no use to them;

* 59% of managers miss seeing valuable internal information because they can’t easily find or retrieve it; and

* 42% accidentally use incorrect information at least once a week.

Statistics like this will come as no surprise to a great many managers.

Yet businesses continue to sink billions of dollars into software implementations and upgrades. At each turn, disbelief is suspended as decision makers convince themselves that this time it will all come together. And just as it was when they were children, this suspended disbelief is driven by economics.

The promise of newfound profitability motivates these software adoptions in the first place - whether or not they are really needed. And the threat of blowing the budget leads to chronic under-investment in the critical supporting phases of business analysis, user training and documentation.

After over 40 years, statistics like those above are a damning indictment on the MIS industry. A reality check is long overdue. It’s time the industry stopped behaving like the tooth fairy and started behaving like Bob the Builder. (He’s real, isn’t he?)

If you have a loan for your car or auto you may consider refinancing. This is where you search for a lender who is offering a loan at a lower rate of interest. You then switch to the new lender so you can lower your monthly payments. The outstanding amount on your existing loan is paid off by the new lender. In this way refinancing your car or auto loan can reduce your monthly payments. You may have unmanageable monthly payments if you have large personal loans and outstanding balances on credit cards.

If your credit rating is not very good then it may be difficult to get more credit or finance or to be able to refinance. Trying to pay minimum monthly payments on credit cards and keeping up with the monthly payments on loans can become ever more difficult until eventually you may not be able to meet your obligations. You will then start to receive charges, penalty fees on top of the accumulating interest. These increase the debt even further. Unless you can reduce your monthly payments by for example mortgage refinancing or obtaining a consolidation loan then eventually you may have to resort to bankruptcy. If you have a very good credit rating then you will normally find it quite easy to obtain a loan. However, even those with a less than perfect credit score can obtain finance. If you can refinance by obtaining a further loan then you should use the money to pay off your existing loans and credit cards.

In this way you will be able to reduce your monthly payments. Refinancing either your auto loan or your mortgage is a great way to reduce your monthly payments and reduce financial pressure. Refinancing can let you consolidate loans and thus bring all your debts together in one loan letting you reduce your monthly payments. It may also give you the opportunity of getting a longer repayment period which will further reduce your monthly payments. However, you may need to make sacrifices too to ensure you can keep up with your monthly payments. Some loan companies will let you extend your loan period instead of refinancing. In this way you will reduce your monthly payments. It may make your monthly payments more affordable but it could mean you have to pay more money back overall.

Loan companies do not normally renegotiate existing loan unless they are going to gain in some way. It may be that the reduced risk to the loan company by making your monthly payments more affordable is enough. But some lenders will seek to maximise their profit by increasing the interest rate when agreeing to extend the loan period.

Each year millions of campers leave the confines of their homes and neighborhoods and set off on a quest for the fresh air and open spaces of the great outdoors. But campers are no different than other vacationers, and the degree to which they escape the comforts of home can vary greatly. Some campers like to travel in their RV (recreational vehicle) in which they can enjoy all the comforts of home and then some! Some RVs have more amenities than many homes or hotels!

In contrast to the RV camper, some people truly like to rough it and live off the land as their ancestors did. For them a tent and fire provide their basic necessities, and the fun lies in getting away from modern creature comforts. However, not all campers are interested in staying in one place. Sportsman - like hunters or fisherman - or those who simply like to explore, need something different that will provide them with shelter, comfort, and mobility, and nothing fills that role like a truck camper.

A truck camper is a camper that rests securely in the flatbed portion of a pickup truck. Unlike an RV or pop up camper (a camper that is towed behind a truck or car), a truck camper allows you to bring a solid shelter with you in the smallest possible footprint.

Because it rests in a pickup truck, it can go just about anywhere a pickup truck can go. Back roads or the boulevard, parkways or national parks, a truck camper can go anywhere your heart desires. That is why these campers are the choice for the sportsman who seeks remote hunting or fishing grounds, or the campers who want to find their own campsite far away from the convention of the hardwired campgrounds.

Truck campers offer obvious advantages in their mobility, as well as lower gas mileage and lower profile than RVs or pop up campers. However, do not let their smaller size fool you, they can be incredibly well appointed and more spacious than one would imagine. Like all recreational vehicles, they range in size, features, and price.

Starting with a smaller and more basic model, one would typically find a truck camper that offers floor space that is roughly eight feet in length. While that may sound small, a well designed truck camper can pack a lot in that little space. You can expect to find that even the more basic, lower priced truck campers will have features like an ice box, a sink with hot and cold water, a stove top, Porta-Potti storage area, an outdoor shower with privacy curtain, a sitting area, and a generously sized bed. When combined with propane gas and water storage ability, even a basic truck camper can allow you to venture far from the beaten path without sacrificing comfort or ignoring any of your basic needs.

If you have a taste for things that are anything but basic there are truck campers for you as well. Deluxe campers can stretch to as much as twelve feet of floor length and have a list of features that you would expect to find on a full sized RV. How about a bathroom and shower, flat screen television with surround sound system, refrigerator and freezer, multiple burner stove top and oven, heating and air conditioning, and a queen sized bed? Yes, all of those things and more can comfortably fit in a first rate truck camper.

The truck camper that is best for you depends on several things. Your wants and needs, your budget, and most important, your truck; all of those factors will drive your ultimate decision. Some campers can not fit in the bed of smaller trucks, and some smaller trucks can not handle the weight of the largest truck campers (which can exceed three thousand pounds). Once you find a combination that meets your criteria then your destination is up to you! A truck camper is your key to anywhere you want to go, and you can go with as much style as your heart desires!

Whilst many studies have shown that women deserve a lower car insurance premium, it is not because they are necessarily “better” drivers.

In fact, studies from around the world have shown that women crash more often! But, and this is the important point, because they tend to drive slower than the more aggressive male of the species, they do less damage to the cars and as a result cost the insurance companies less money as a result.

It has also been found that some women would not tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth when speaking to their insurance company. Whether this is the same with men or not it is difficult to say, but certainly there appears to be a bit of ‘gamesmanship’ or ‘gameswomenship’ going on when claims are made.

Insurer Liverpool Victoria in the UK has found that a good number of women do worry about other people they let drive their car - like their mum or their best friend!

The extra care that women take of their car can be seen by the number of cars that have names. Calling your car ‘Henry’ or ‘Gerald’ may seem a little silly to some but the extra care that this tendency reveals is a good indication of why insurance companies will offer lower prices to women who are seeking a competitive premium.

So much so, that there are specific companies (or separately branded divisions of much larger companies) that are set up to market to women exclusively, such as Sheilas’ Wheels, Diva Car Insurance and Diamond Car Insurance that offer such specials as handbag insurance.

These companies then compete with each other as well as the mainstream insurance companies to give the best deal for women seeking car insurance. Of course, as with everything, the devil is in the detail and the policy differences may explain why you will be being charged a little more or a little less for this policy or that.

But they are not directed at the average man in the street, certainly!

None of the above implies support for or promotion of any company or product, and does not construe financial advice and should not be interpreted as such.

Cycling Training Tips

1.-Have a clear Goal in Mind. If you have clear goals of what you would like to achieve in the season it helps to structure your training. For example if your goal is to complete the Etape du Tour you will need to make sure you build up a good base fitness to be able to comfortably ride 110 miles. If your target is the national 10 mile Time trial championship the hours you spend on a bike will be not as important as the intensity of training.

2.-Be focused in training. When we train we should not just mechanically churn out the miles. It is important to have a good attitude to training, we should feel a sense of enthusiasm and positive energy. Often the important thing in training is not the time we spend or the miles we complete, the important thing is the intensity and attitude which we do our training.

3.-Give equal priority to rest and training. When we rest or have a recovery ride we should feel this is just as important as the most intense intervals. It is rest and recovery rides that make our interval training more successful. If we feel we only make progress by hammering ourselves we will be likely to over train.

4.-Train with other people. At times we need to train on our own, especially for a targeted interval session. However at other times it is good to train with other people. If they are of a similar standard we will be inspired and encouraged to go out even when we are not too motivated.

5.-Have a plan, but be flexible. It is good to have a training schedule. This will help us to have a certain discipline, however if we are too rigid we may force ourselves to go on a longer training ride when it is better to rest.

6.-Listen to the signals of your own body. A coach can give good advice but sometimes the best judge of how you are feeling will be yourself. Through experience you will learn when you can go hard and when it is time to pull back.

7.-Make training interesting. Some people are able to follow scientific schedules for interval training on a turbo, I admire their dedication. However personally I would rather do intervals by climbing real hills. There is a greater sense of achievement and training feels more rewarding. It may be more difficult to stick to exact prescriptions of heart rate zones e.t.c. however I don’t think this matters too much. It is important to enjoy training, if training is too scientific and prescriptive it can be quite intimidating. This piece of advice may depend upon individual preferences.

Home Theatre Screens - Looking For The Perfect Picture

Finding the perfect picture for your home theater can be difficult, and it also depends what your definition of a home theatre is. For most individuals, a home theatre is having a beautifully large and modern TV with surround sound speakers in a room other than the living room: a room specifically designed for enjoying the big game or for watching the newest released DVDs.

A TV by itself is not enough, though, since an important factor is viewing distance. In that respect, it’s like going to a movie theatre. Most people do not like the very front because not only do they have to crane their necks, but there is so much to take in all at once and it can be overwhelming.

Then there are those individuals who think home theatre system, and that means having an actual screen and projector. Technology is amazing, and now many individuals can afford to own an actual home movie theatre complete with projector and screen. If this sounds exciting, by all means, look for the right projector and home theatre screen for your perfect vision of a home theatre, but make sure to do your research first.

If you are looking to purchase a home theater screen, you should know that there are specifically three types of home theater screens available. The first one is the fixed home theater screen. These are the simplest, and most common, screens. They are usually designed to be permanently mounted on the wall. The disadvantage of this screen is that once it’s set, it’s set. There are advantages, however.

One advantage is you can hide ugly wires and cables quite easily with this type of installation. The screen itself is made of a fabric that will be stretched onto a frame and then fastened into place. A wrinkle free white surface should be the end result. If it is not wrinkle free after a professional puts it in, demand the job is done right.

The second type of screen is the tripod home theatre screen. These are the types of screens that are portable because they are attached to a tripod. These are best for meetings, like a business demonstration requiring slides, or an outdoor training. It is okay for these types of purposes, but they are not designed for actual movie watching.

The third type of screen is a wall mounted retractable screen. Remember the screens teachers would use in elementary school when they had an overhead projector? That’s exactly what this is. These types of screens are usually installed on the wall, but they can be pulled down. These are more expensive than the fixed home theatre screen, and are best for homes that are smaller and therefore have less area to work with, otherwise they don’t give any advantage over the basic model.

If you want a true to life movie viewing experience at home, these are your three options. Do the research, figure out your budget, and then enjoy the unique experience of having your very own projector to see the DVDs as if you were still in a small town theatre.

Omega 3 is the name given to essential fatty acids - DHA, EPA, DPA and ALA because of their molecular structure. Some of these fatty acids cannot be manufactured by our body on its own, and therefore they have to be consumed from an external food source.

Fish oil is one of the richest sources of both DHA and EPA. Vegetable oils, especially flax seed oil, are rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) - a short-chain fatty acid. If we include all these food sources in our everyday diet, our body will never experience deficiency of these fats. Let’s learn more about these omega 3 oil sources.

Omega 3 from fish flesh

Oil extracted from the flesh tissues of fatty or oily fish like salmon, herring, halibut, trout and tuna is rich is fatty acid content. However, fish oil should be chosen after careful investigation because some low-quality products are made with unrefined and impure fish oil. Only buy those supplement products made with pharmaceutical grade fish oil.

This oil has been laboratory tested to ensure that DHA and EPA concentration in this product is up to the standards. Usually 60% of DHA and EPA content is recommended. Other omega 3 oil sources include cod liver oil, harp seal oil and krill oil.

Sea creatures

Sea food and marine creatures are rich in omega 3 fatty acids. In addition to this, they also contain optimum levels of vitamin A and D. Oil extracted from harp seal is naturally purified because of removal of impurities through the process of excretion.

However, high-quality supplements made from fish oil and seal oil are further purified through molecular distillation to balance the amounts of fatty acids and other vitamins with heavy metals if present. Only those omega 3 oil sources should be selected that conform to quality health standards.

Omega 3 oil sources also include some vegetable oils like canola, flax seed, soybean, walnut, peanut, corn and sunflower. These oils contain adequate amounts of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. However, some of these oils might cause allergies in certain patients.

If you experience occasional depression and anxiety, avoid corn oil, peanut oil and soybean oil. In healthy people normal dosage of vegetable oils is 1-2 tablespoon daily. If you are consuming fish oil capsules, taking 2-3 capsules everyday is sufficient to provide 1.5-2 grams of essential fatty acids to the body.

We have found a pure pharmaceutical grade, molecularly distilled
fish oil product that is naturally high in DHA and EPA.
