The exact cause of lateral epicondylitis is not absolutely certain. Common theory is that that lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow is the result of consistent use or overuse of the limb. This condition presents with miniscule tearing of the tissues in the tendons that connect the muscles of the forearm to the joint at the elbow. Wrist extensors, a group of muscles, are the muscles involved when you have lateral epicondylitis. This group of muscles functions to move or lift the wrist. Jumping up without an invitation is one of the most common problems owners face with their dogs. However, resolving this issue doesn’t have to be time consuming or difficult. With the right techniques and some ol’ fashioned consistency you can teach your dog how to mind his manners even when you or a stranger comes into your home.

Causes

  • Over Excitement and no socialization - dogs that are not used to seeing strangers on a regular basis may become over excited exuberant.
  • Too Much Energy - If your dog is bouncing off the walls like rubber then the likelihood of him jumping up will increase times ten! Dogs that don’t get enough exercise will often display unwanted behaviors to drain their energy.
  • No Prior Training - Dogs are not born with the knowledge of how to greet humans. It’s up to us to teach them the right way. If your dog has not been taught how to properly greet someone then it’s unfair to expect him not to make up his own rules.

How to resolve this problem

Teach your dog! - Make time to show your dog exactly what behavior is acceptable and what is not. Often times teaching a solid sit/stay is very effective at curbing a jumping dog. If he’s sitting, he can’t be jumping.

Get Control - Leash up your dog when company comes over so you have an easy way to control him. Keeping a leash right by the door for easy access is a good idea. If your dog pulls on the leash, lunges at people or otherwise has no respect for the fact that YOU are on the other end of that lead, then a training collar such as the “Prong” can help you get control fast. Think power steering for dogs. (always consult a trainer for poper fitting and use of a prong)

Be consistent - Allowing your dog to jump up some of the time, but not all the time is confusing for him. Set the ground rules and stick to them!

Okay, I have control, a training collar and the will to be consistent…now what?!

Now, you control the situation.

  • Leash your dog
  • Ask your dog to sit
  • Open door
  • At this point many dogs will attempt to get up, calmly place him back into a sit.
  • Invite the visitor inside
  • If your dog attempts to jump up the training collar will do most of the work of “correcting” him for the unwanted behavior, all you need to do is place him back into a sit. If you must do this twenty times, then you must do it twenty times.
  • Praise your dog for the right behavior! This is very important. You’ve told him what you DON’T want to see, now tell him what you DO want to see. He needs the complete picture to really learn what you expect of him.
  • Wash, rinse and repeat.

Enlisting the help of a friend to play the part of a ‘visitor’ can be a big help. This way you can practicing many times in a row without worrying about your guest.

Practice, practice! You know the saying, practice makes perfect. Dogs are like cars in that they need regular ‘tune ups’ to keep in proper working order. Keep practicing with your dog and he’ll keep responding.

Use space to your advantage - Use the same technique your dog is using to curb his jumping up on YOU. Quickly step into his space as he jumps. A loud “EH AH” and a hand clap can help to get your point across. Then show him what you do want, ask for a sit and praise when he does. He wants your attention, so make sure he only gets it when all four paws are on the floor!

Exercise - A tired dog is a good dog. Proper exercise can help to curb many unwanted behaviors and making it easier for you to control the training sessions. Most dogs need at least 30 minutes of hard running to be civilized pets.

Youth culture will virtually disappear in Europe as the marketing of new technology is directed to the growing older population

The International Youth Parliament (retrieved: 2003) defined the term “culture” it as follows; Culture is the underlying structure that shapes our daily interactions. The way we understand the world and our place in it is through our cultural background; culture gives us a sense of belonging and identity. This is particularly true of young people seeking to define themselves as the group. This need has been extensive by marketing and selling of concepts to the young. This is interesting as traditionally most cultures have been formed through centuries of human experience, shaped by human interactions with the world. They are rich in an embodied wisdom that guides our interaction with other people, the earth and our spirituality. Culture can provide us with a wealth of knowledge we would not otherwise possess, allowing us to interpret the world in different ways and providing a base for our identities that is strong and sustainable. This has been true for centuries; however the question new arises, whether the intensive marketing has defined youth culture to such an extent that it can now no longer survive without it as the marketing spotlight moves on to other more rapidly expanding marketing.

In the next twenty years the generation born in the 1950s and 1960s, will grow old. As they do their different attitude to age will create new markets in the world’s rich countries. Senioragency International (2002), a consultancy specializing in marketing to the elderly, says that the over-50s own three-quarters of all financial assets and account for half of all discretionary spending power in developed countries. Most older people own their own homes and they own two-thirds of all the shares on the stock market. Free time and health combined with financial comfort and a greater readiness for self-indulgence, are creating a mature market eager to consume and explore. They have lots of money to spend for things they enjoy and also new technologies.

Senior International (2002) also mentions, older people are wealthier and healthier than ever before, and they are determined to enjoy themselves to the end. A few decades ago, most people had only a few years to live by the time they retired. Most workers retiring today can look forward to 15-20 years of free time. It is scientifically proven (a survey by the U.N. - United Nations 1994) that the average age for a man today is seventy five and a woman’s is eighty remain active for most of it and healthier living. Also, as Drucker, P. (The Economist, November 3rd 2001) states, that those over 50 will not keep on working as traditional full-time nine-to-five employees, but will participate in the labour force in many new and different ways: as temporaries, as part-timers, as consultants, on special assignments and so on.

An article by the FNFRD (Finnish National Fund for Research and Development-Sitra, 2002) reveals that older citizens (over 50) have access to advanced technology. About 40% of older EU people have used a computer and 22% have used internet in their lifetime. 48% of older EU people have a mobile phone and 38% have sent or received SMS via a mobile. The study also shows older people use mobile phones primarily for security reasons.

The Research of the FNFRD shows use the Internet for emailing, searching information on products and services and for educational purposes. There is a huge demand for appropriate digital literacy training among older people; older people are keen on learning about 32% wish to improve their computer skills. The computer industry has discovered the financial advantage of older people; they specifically target older people in marketing campaigns and design special products for them. Bowerman, K (2002) supports the above research says, older people are keeping abreast of new technology and are far from confused by computers and the Internet. One third in Europe do not use computers and are not interested in learning computer skills. Older people no longer think of retirement as an end but rather a favourable aspect of life, it is more seen as additional time that gives them the opportunity to explore new horizons, by going on holiday, studying or develop and discover interests.

This fact is supported through research undertaken by Senioragency International (2002) found out that lots of older people use the Internet to stay in touch with friends or just simply to play games such as bridge. Software companies develop programs, such as gardening design or home design programs, which are aimed at the older population. Having that kind of software on offer means older people like to use this software and in order to do this they need to know how to use a computer.

Nearly every over 50 year old has a mobile phone, a computer or even a pocket PC. Multimedia applications or products such as a navigation system for cars or even a TV and video system of a car, all those things are usually bought by people over 50, because they have they money to buy it as well as enjoying luxury items for their own pleasure. The economy benefits by concentrating on the older population. More money can be spent on developing new and more advanced technology. It also says that the over 50 year olds make up the largest share of TV audiences, spending 30% to 40% more time in front of their boxes than the rest of the population.

There is a trend where products and services are also starting to be more tailored to the needs of older consumers; running marketing campaigns are appearing which have been designed for older consumers, also packaging and design are also adapted to the mature market. Older people concentrate more on usage, content and price than younger people do. The most successful advertising campaigns targeted at mature consumers focus instead on active and healthy lifestyles and introduce positive role models and so finds a way to encourage older people to buy things they not necessarily need. An example of watching television I saw a good example on how companies are starting to focus on the older customers an advert for Esure (television advert 2003). Esure uses an older person to promote their insurance. The person they use in their advert is Winner, M. he is a food critic and columnist and they use them to emphasizing safety and flattering the driving of the older generation.

By targeting the older people and ignoring young people limit the industry. It is good to concentrate on new income markets but you should not forget the already established ones. It is wrong not to invest into marketing and developing new technology for young people. A lot of the new technology is used to teach and educate the young population, if it is in schools, colleges or universities. We need young and good skilled workers in every part of the industry not only older people.

If, we do not invest in young people education we will lose their new ideas and innovative thinking. According to the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre (2000) we already do; now designers, technology developers and especially students of design should be aware of the needs of ‘critical’ groups of users, in particular older people. The intention is to arrive at a better understanding of the present and the future needs of older people, to develop new methodologies in design and design education in response to the demographic and social changes taking place.

We also need new innovative design which appeals to the younger population and makes them buy more things. It is easier to make young people buy things by simply concentrating on packaging and design. Younger people do not necessarily need an item they just buy it because they like the look of it or just simply because it is the latest model. If the marketing industry forgets that very important point, they may get a new customer base that spends money on their product but they will lose the younger people.

It is right that the over 50s are a market with more potential in point of selling new technology because they have only just started to discover things like computers and mobile phones and only recently, about 5 years ago, started buying those and learning how to use them, while the young people got those things a long time before. Young people want more new things very quickly and it is good to also concentrate on older population because they bring in the money for companies to develop and design new technologies.

It is not only older people who like to enjoy themselves, young people like to do so as well. They might not have so much money to spend but they are still a big and expanding potential market. It may be true that in the past the marketing industry only concentrated on young people, however that was wrong as such as exclusive strategy can never maximise a products full potential. In exactly the same way, through only concentrating on old people would be wrong as well. The marketing industry needs to find a balance between marketing to both of old and young people. It is not correct to focus solely on the older population in terms of marketing as the younger population also have a lot of spending power and therefore plays a big part in economy as well. So the marketing industry should focus on different groups of young people so they can develop there own culture instead of adapting of just giving - traditional - one.

Had a few great training sessions this week, and here is this week’s best training tip that I want to share with you.

Always Use Non-competing Supersets in Your Workouts

As you may know, I only use supersets of non-competing exercises in my training programs. That means that the two exercises in the superset must not interfere with one another. For example, the first exercise, let’s say a dumbbell press, must not interfere with the second exercise, say a dumbbell row. That’s a nice little upper body superset right there.

One of the tough things about designing the perfect non-competing superset is to avoid fatiguing your grip. For example, pairing a Dumbbell Row and a Dumbell Split Squat are perfect in theory (because you are training upper body and lower body), but both exercises demand a lot from your grip. So it would make for an ineffective superset (both exercises would fail in grip first, before the back or leg muscles fatigued).

On Thursday I did a superset of exercises that I had never done before: Barbell squats and wide-grip seated rows. It was a great combination with absolutely no competition between muscle groups or grip - so I could work very heavy in both exercises - therefore leading to the most “turbulence” on my body - and therefore, the best training results.

An alternative bodyweight version of that superset would be Pistols supersetted with Pullups - talk about a tough, functional superset. Even the world’s strongest man would have a tough go with those.

For the next couple days start randomly saying the word “COME” in an upbeat happy voice anytime your dog looks at you and quickly give him a treat. Then go about your business again and ignore him. The idea is to teach the dog to associate the word “come” with something good, hence the treats.

Once your dog is eagerly anticipating his cookie after you command “COME” then start doing this when he’s not looking at you, maybe even a few steps away. With any luck he’ll whip around and start looking for that treat he’s expecting. Good! He’s got the idea. Take a few steps back which will encourage him to come toward you then reward him with the treat and go about your business again.

It’s a good idea to always touch the collar first before giving the treat. If your dog gets loose outside you’ll want him to easily accept you taking hold of his collar when he comes to you.

Now we can start adding a little more distance and distractions to the mix. Call your dog when he’s across the room, then in another room, then move on to calling him when he’s slightly distracted. Always be sure to reward him when he gets to you, and mix up the treats every once in a while to keep him on his toes. Varying the amount of treats he gets upon his arrival to you is also a good idea . If he’s not sure if he’ll get one treat or three then he’s more likely to rush over to you quickly each time you call.

Start with low expectations and then raise them as your dog progresses. It’s unfair to expect a dog who’s only being in training for a week to come when called off leash when outside and distracted. If he hasn’t been trained in such conditions, then he won’t respond. Start in low distraction environments like the living room and then work up to more distractions as your dog becomes more and more successful.

But shouldn’t he be coming to me just because I call, not because he wants food?

In the beginning it’s up to us to teach the dog what the word COME means. Using food treats for this make the process go much faster and helps the dog to learn easier because he’s more motivated to focus. After your dog is reliably coming when called every time, even around distractions, then you can start to wean him off the treats and only offer them for extra quick responses or when he’s highly distracted.

Important Points

Use a leash! This will give you greater control over the situation. It’s a good idea to let the dog drag around a six foot lead so if he decides to ignore your call you can simply pick up the lead, give it a gentle tug and encourage him to come to you.

Never give a command you won’t enforce. If you command him to come, then you better make it happen should be choose to ignore you. Allowing him to do so is only teaching him that he doesn’t have to obey your commands every time. Either help your dog to make the right choice if he is still learning by backing up a few steps to encourage him, or pick up the lead and give a gentle tug to let him know that come means come NOW.

Practice make perfect. Plan on doing at least fifty repetitions at each stage before moving on to add more distance or more distractions. Don’t rush it, make sure your dog is consistently responding before moving forward and expecting more of him. Asking too much to soon will only cause frustration for both you and your dog.

Use small treats. No need to break out the big milk bones for this exercise. Small, smelly treats should do just fine. The smellier, the better. Tiny pieces of beef jerky work very well and are easy to keep in your pocket.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show that there is a multimedia divide in the North and South of England and that this divide is rooted in economical history. This article will focus on the Internet development in relation to the British economy. The discussion begins with a definition of Multimedia and an overview of the British economy during the 1980s. The result is that the development of multimedia is closely linked to the economical development and to bridge the gap between North and South of England, the government needs to spend more money in the northern cities.

Introduction

Multimedia is a very broad term and before starting this discussion, one needs to define it clearly and specify what aspects of it the following paragraphs will focus on.

According to the dictionary multimedia is ‘the presentation of a computer application, usually, interactive, that incorporates media elements such as text graphics, video animation and sound on a computer. Its history, in relation to computers dates back to 1972, when the first video game was launched. Consequently, one can equate multimedia with all interactive aspects of computers, such as internet, games or work packages to name but a few.

This discussion will focus primarily on the Internet and its development in relation to the British economy. It will examine both its private use and its use in education and business, thus placing in a larger economical context.

Statistics, which will be analysed in more detail later, have shown that there exists an important rift in the development of multimedia between the North and the South of Britain. In the southern regions and London, private Internet access is much more common in the South than in the North of Britain. There are a number of reasons for this divide and in order to investigate further, it is essential to explain the geographical and economical divide of Britain over the past 25 to 30 years.

A period of time that fuelled the divide was the 1980s, when the collapse of the mining and other industries caused a national state of recession. The recovery from this economical low-point was much faster in the South than in the North, due to Margaret Thatcher’s centralised government and the fact that London and the South of England had easier connections with the rest of Europe and thus experienced facilitated trade and transport possibilities. To this day, the British government has not managed to bridge this economical gap and living standards in the north remain statistically lower than in the South.

These historical facts imply that the economical development of Britain is closely related to the development of multimedia. In other words, one can ask whether the trailing northern economy is one of the reasons for the lower use of multimedia in these regions? In reverse, does the economical well being of a region depend on the development of its multimedia industry?

Nowadays, large companies’ administrations are highly computerised, which suggests that its employees have to be more and more fluent in the use of Internet and work related computer programs. This explains how the large-scale economy is dependent on the multimedia education of each private individual in order to function adequately. The following discussion will aim at elaborating the reasons for the North and South divide and its development over the past 25 years. It will also examine some of the efforts made to eliminate this divide and try propose further possible solutions.

Literature Review

In the early 1980s, economic misery was spread widely. It was more prevalent and more deeply felt in the North, but it was certainly present in the South as well, and it was difficult to argue strongly for a policy which would simply have distributed high unemployment, for example, more evenly across the country. The economic recovery after the recession was one in which the South was the main beneficiary making it inevitable that sooner or later it would run up against constrains on growth, at a time when the North was still starved of economic activity.

With the change of government in May 1979 came a major shift in policy.

The Conservative government’s dominant aims were to master inflation through control of money supply and to pull back the frontiers of the State with an increasing emphasis on privatisation. These were pursued with great pertinacity, but often with more rhetoric than success, in circumstances that include a second oil shock in 1979, an international slowdown and recession, war in the Falklands, a prolonged miners’ strike and international economic recovery from 1984 onwards. The Thatcher government took office in May 1979 until the end of 1990 with the resignation of Mrs Thatcher.

The government which took office in May 1979 was dominated by ministers with a very different economic philosophy from that of earlier governments. In some respect they shared the views of the Heath administration in its early days. They were strongly against State intervention in industry and wanted to abolish controls, subsidies and other attempts to prevail over market forces. They intended to cut public expenditure and reduce taxation. They hoped to return an unspecified amount of publicity owned industry to private enterprise. Producers and consumers were to be left as free as possible to conduct their own affairs.

The aim of financial stability, moreover, was to be achieved by control over the stock of money. It was regarded as the product of monetary policy which was the sole and sufficient instrument for the avoidance of inflation.

The monetary targets which were to govern policy were first missed, then changed and finally abandoned. The story of economic policy in the 1980s is largely the story of reversion from new concepts of economic management to older concepts initially rejected.

And stick to them! Decide once and for all that you will not allow him to pull and then react anytime he tries to move ahead of you. This means you’ll have to be watching him closely during the first couple sessions. Allowing him to pull sometimes but not all the time will only confuse your dog. Look at your next couple walks as training experiences, not exercise. Once your dog gets the hang of it then you can start to plan on moving past the driveway.

Practice, Distract, and Practice Some More

Teaching good leash walking skills is an ongoing process. You may always need to ‘be unpredictable’ every once in a while even after your dog understands what you expect. Keep him on his toes and keep practicing. Don’t be stingy with the praise, let him know when he’s doing the right thing and you’ll start to see more of that behavior.
