Boys’ Behavior - Why Boys Behave the Way They Do

He is active, he likes to jump and climb, and he can’t stay focused on anything other than the computer, game system or his skate board and seems too distracted to listen. He gets into things and he takes things apart, he likes to pick at his sister. He dislikes his school work and can be disruptive in the classroom. He loves noise and finds sitting still to be the ultimate challenge. Is he attention deficit? Is he hyperactive? Or could it be that he is simply a normal boy?

The behavior of boys is of growing concern, particularly when you consider that a significantly larger number of boys are medicated to control their behavior, males make up the overwhelming percentage of our prison population, that a larger number of boys are failing at school and are dropping out and there are more women than men in degree programs after high school. What is going on with boys and why does he act the way he does? What drives male behavior?

A growing body of evidence suggests that male behavior is driven by his biology as much as it is shaped by his socialization. Research into the development of the male and female brain is beginning to yield interesting results which suggests that the development that occurs during pregnancy goes a long way in shaping male and female behavior. Briefly, all children start off anatomically identical. It is the introduction of additional male hormones (Androgens), triggered by the Y chromosome, in the child after about week 8 of development that begins the development of males. This introduction of androgens at particular levels is not only responsible for development of the sexual organs in males but also the differences in male and female bodies in terms of muscle mass and fat disposition. The presence of these hormones is also responsible for changes in the brain in terms of structure and possibly how the brain is “wired”. These changes in the developing brain suggest that the reasons that boys and girls act so differently is partially due to the biology of the brain. Some differences between boys and girls are: boy’s attention span is shorter than girls, boys are more adept at learning spatially than girls, boys need more physical movement to learn than girls do, and boys brains need more rest than girls.
An interesting piece of research showed that male and female toddlers respond to a problem differently. Toddlers were placed on one side of a clear wall approximately three feet tall and their mothers were placed on the other side of the wall. When the toddlers wanted to get to their mothers they ran into the obstruction. Girls had a tendency to cry and verbalize towards their mother in response to this dilemma while boys had a tendency to try to climb the wall, push at it or try to find a way around or under the obstruction.

This demonstrates a tendency for girls to use interaction as a way of solving the problem while boys wanted to do use some form of action to solve the problem. In the absences of socialization to explain this difference, this is supportive evidence that male and female biology influences behavior. Another piece of medical evidence that supports this notion of biology influencing behavior is a medical condition known as congenital adrenal hyperplasia or CAH in which the fetus is exposed to unusual levels of androgens during development. Girls that suffer from this disorder have behaviors that we typically associate with boys and end up expressing interest in male typical activities and careers.

This evidence supports the notion that the presence of a particular level of male hormones in development influences the behavior of boys including the types of toys they play with, the types of activities they typically enjoy and the career choices they make.

Differences between males and females in visual-spatial ability, word usage and recognition and different brain activity during problem solving also suggest that there are fundamental differences between how the brains of males and females work. This difference can also be seen when particular areas of the brain are damaged. When the same area of the brain is damaged in men and women the effects of the damage is different in men and women. But this is only true of certain parts of the brain. Damage other parts of the brain and the effects are the same in men and women. Subtle differences in brain structure between males and females can be noted in a very few parts of the brain. These subtle structural differences coupled with the differences in brain activity during problem resolution would suggest that the differences in male and female behavior is a function both of how the brain is structured as well as how it is wired or how it functions.

There is also evidence that when it comes to academic performance that the distribution of girls along a bell shaped curve show a greater tendency to fall towards the average while boys distribution curve has a tendency to fall along a greater distribution along the curve, the average is the same for boys and girls but the distribution is different. In other words, more girls have a tendency to be clumped more around the average point while boys have a tendency to spread out more evenly. This means that more boys are going to be at the head of the class but there will also be more boys with difficulties than girls. Applied to behavior, this would suggest that we can expect more girls to act in a way that is considered average for children that age and that there is going to be a certain level of homogeneity with girls. With boys we can expect to see more variability among boys, some behaving in an average fashion, but more that struggle than girls. What this does is that it has a tendency to really isolate the boys that fall in the “struggle” category because there is a body of boys in the average group and a large number of girls in the average group.

What this difference in brain development is that boys act the way they do because they are built to act that way. A boy’s development is a central aspect of a boy’s behavior. Boys are built to be more active, to test the limits of their physical strength, to throw things to see how it flies, to explore the woods or the insides of the computer, to seek new things to grab their interests, to take on a challenge, to compete with one another, to learn by doing and by experiment, and to try to fix problems. Take that boy and put him into a setting in which he is expected to sit still for long periods of time and to learn through having someone talk to him, want to have him play quietly in the house and pay attention to his homework, to express himself by talking and you begin to see the dilemma that is being created for that boy and for those who are trying to enforce this structure. This structure is not allowing for how this child is created to operate, it pushes him towards “girl” behavior. Have enough of this constraint and you will begin to get school failure, school resistance, disruptive behavior and possibly rebellious behavior. So what can we do?

1.-Appreciate that boys are built for activity. This activity must be accounted for when we are creating structure for our boys. Give boys an opportunity to move, make activity a part of a task as much as possible. Provide time to be active at regular intervals to keep the wiggles under control. Give the boys the more active chores to do at home and in the classroom.

2.-Recognize that the attention span of a boy is going to be shorter when he is not particularly interested in a subject. When teaching boys, keeping tasks and subjects as short as can be and still achieve the objective of the task will help. Breaking things into parts with intervals of activity between can also be useful. Keeping homework to a limited amount can also be very helpful in terms of compliance and completion.

3.-Take advantage of his natural curiosity to help him build his strengths. Build into his exploration topics or lessons in which he may not necessarily be interested. Appreciate that his natural curiosity will serve him well in his life.

4.-Help him find appropriate ways to test his strength as well as his desire to compete. Don’t try to train this out of him, this will only damage him. Instead, help him to see that there can be fun and beneficial ways of demonstrating his capacity to others and to himself.

5.-Encourage the efforts he makes, not his ability or his talent. Some recent research shows that encouragement of effort is far more effective in development of perseverance and a positive self image than praising a child for his intelligence or raw ability.

6.-When talking to him recognize that being active during that talk helps him absorb what you are saying (providing the activity is not too engaging). Taking a child on a walk or allowing him to color while you talk can be very helpful. Don’t always expect a boy to look you in the eyes when you are disciplining him, he finds this embarrassing. By doing these things you are teaching him to express his feelings through talking rather than always by action.

7.-Recognize that boys bond by doing things with other boys, and with you as well. Don’t expect a boy to want to simply talk to you for the purpose of enjoyment and growing closer to you. He will come to you to talk to you about a problem. Keep it brief, talk too much and he will tune you out. If you wish to get closer to a boy, do things with him.

8.-Don’t compare him to other boys, either directly to him or even in your own mind. Remember, there is greater variability among boys than there are girls. Learn to appreciate the boy for who he is created to be.

Gavaskar-Border-Ponting Controversy

The row between Cricket Batting legends Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border was a show of pent up anger dating back from the Bedi vs Bob Simpson series in 1979 which India almost won despite unfavourable (read highly biased) umpiring by Australians:

1. Gavaskar - Quoting David Hookes incident:

This is perhaps the only incorrect reference/ remark in the whole episode.

David Hookes or anyone else, the quote was out of context and Gavaskar lost track of his argument from here, allowing the Aussies to defend themselves. Thumbs Down.

2. Ponting defending sledging by referring to it as a cultural difference:

Sure there are cultural differences and India and West Indies are at one end of the cultural spectrum and Australia and England the other end (England has lately moved to the centre of the spectrum). This end of the spectrum is red (blood), and they sure play the game hard, and would resort to any style to win - in fact winning is everything. Remember how Bob Simpson was never given out in 1977-78 series led by Bishan Singh Bedi where the Aussies could not stand up to the Indian Spinners so only their partisan umpiring saved the day for them. I don’t know how many remember the Trevor Chappell underhand delivery? New Zealanders surely do - and would never forget that. Or more recently Ponting sledging the minnow nations play - well he should go to the football world cup and take a stand there first. Similarly, England resorted to Bodyline, Vaseline (John Lever in India) and even through racial means which they abandoned later (discrimination at MCC, etc). At the West Indian and Indian end of the cultural spectrum (which is white as in peace) we’ve always known that the game has to be played fairly and even tampering the psychology of the opponent is not fair. Now this is another matter whether tampering with the psychology is fair or not, but it is a part of the game tactics. Thumbs Down.

3. Ponting - on Gavaskar Chauhan walkout:

Well that incident is a blot on Gavaskar’s otherwise spotless career (besides the Kapil Dev drop in Calcutta). Still, let us understand, they didn’t resort to sledging and their decision was hurting none other than their own team and Chauhan in particular (he lost what was in hindsight was probably his last opportunity to score a test 100). It is still much better than Aussies tricking to keep out Murali through various unfair means. It is a well know fact that only the actions of cricketers from the sub-continent have been found incorrect. Ricky Ponting, what do you say to that? Thumbs Down.

4. Ponting - on Adam Gilchrist walk out without being given out:Cosidering that Ricky Ponting did not take it lightly, and did not like Adam Gilchrist’s walk says a lot about how Aussies play their cricket - i.e. not in the best of sportsman spirit. Thumbs Down. The bottomline is that some teams want a fair results, and some teams want to just win. And recently since they have been winning, they have not been found to be a Champion, they’re just winners. West Indies were Champions. Champions are winners whatever the results. Thumbs up.

5. Border - on how Gavaskar played his cricket:

Well Gavaskar surely played it better than Border who just kept on and on till he could cross Gavaskar in the number of runs he scored - and at what average? If Border wants to refer to Gavaskar’s ODI career, well, that is about India taking time to adapt to the new style of playing cricket and Gavaskar’s 36 runs in the world cup, was the bottom. Thereafter Gavaskar adapted well and had a score of good performances. Finally it is a fact that India and West Indies took the cup much before Australia could stand up and be counted. Even Sri Lanka took it before them. Thumbs Down.

6. Border - Quoting David Hookes incident:

This is perhaps the only incorrect reference/ remark in the whole episode.

David Hookes or anyone else, the quote was out of context and Gavaskar lost track of his argument from here, allowing the Aussies to defend themselves. Thumbs Down.

7. Darren Lehmann - joining the controversy:

Darren who? Well, what is the need of Darren now to get into the controversy? Thumbs Down.

Foot Pain - What About Ready Made Insoles to Relieve Your Foot Pain?

If you have heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, fallen arches or structural problems that cause imbalance, ready made inserts can make your condition worse.

Ready made inserts cause imbalances in your foot in and of themselves. Podiatrists and Physicians know this and you owe it to yourself to see if your foot pain problem requires orthonics, which are insoles molded from a plaster cast of both feet, and are necessary for both feet even if you are having foot problems in just one foot.

Orthonics are made and worn for both feet even if you have foot pain in just one foot. The reason for this is the foot without the pain, could be one of the reasons for the pain in the other foot by causing an imbalance condition among other things.

If your foot pain condition is severe, such as plantar fasciitis, fallen arches or structural problems that cause imbalance, podiatrists or physicians may prescribe and fit you with a pair of orthonics.

The three major treatment goals for plantar fasciitis for example are:

  • Reducing inflammation and pain
  • Reducing pressure on the plantar fascia
  • Restoring strength and flexibility
  • Relative to reducing pressure on the plantar fascia, custom-designed orthonics, made to each patients foot specification as to the type and severity of the foot condition as prescribed by a podiatrist or physician is a critical treatment element to improving your heel pain and/or plantar fasciitis.

In early arthritis, for example, a three year study, part funded by the Arthritis Research Campaign, showed that custom designed orthonics manufactured in a new carbon graphite material corrected a potentially severe deformity around the ankle region of the foot.

The best course of action you can take when Foot Pain begins is to assume the worse possible scenario is beginning and schedule an appointment with a licensed practicing podiatrist, who has a staff of practicing professionals.

Keep in mind that ready-made insoles will not provide balanced arch support, contribute to gait correction, nor cushion your foot effectively. Orthonics as prescribed by a podiatrist or physician is the only way to improve on heel pain and/or plantar fasciitis.

So see your Podiatrist to check out the underlying cause of your foot pain, and if orthonics are recommended by your podiatrist, buy them, they are absolute key to curing plantar fasciitis and most foot problems.

15 Year Mortgage Refinancing Will Save You Money

If you are considering mortgage refinancing, choosing a mortgage with a 15 year term length will save you thousands of dollars. Many homeowners that refinance pay little thought to the high cost of 30 year loans. Here are several tips to help you choose the right term length when refinancing your mortgage.

Not many homeowners weigh the costs and advantages of choosing a 15 year mortgage instead of a 30 year loan. When refinancing their mortgages the majority of borrowers opt for the 30 year mortgage without giving it a second thought. Here is an example illustrating just how much you’ll save with a 15 year mortgage.

Suppose you are refinancing your home for $200,000 with a fixed interest rate. With a 30 year mortgage you qualify for 6.50 percent interest rate and have a monthly payment of $1,265. Over the term of this 30 year mortgage you will pay your lender $255,000 in mortgage interest, more than the amount you actually borrowed!

Consider the same loan with a 15 year term length. Because you are choosing a loan with a shorter term you qualify for a lower mortgage rate at 5.90 percent. It’s true your payment will be higher because you have less time to pay back the loan; however, you will pay significantly less to the lender in finance charges. Your monthly payment for this loan will be $1,670 but you will only pay $101,850 to your lender for the financing. Can your budget support this higher monthly payment? When you consider how much you’ll save most homeowners can squeeze this money from somewhere in their budget.

    Vote For The Moat

The proposed fence across the southern U.S. border with Mexico is, at best, an expensive and stupid idea. Faced with a fence illegal border crossers can simply climb over it, make a hole in it or dig under it. A fence is not the best deterrent to those determined to trespass. A much better way to defend and protect property is a moat. A Middle Age defense, a deep wide moat always worked better than a fence.

To put in a border moat just dig a wide deep trench across the U.S. southern border (California, Arizona, Texas), about 50 feet deep and about 1 mile wide. The moat could be built by the Army Corps of Engineers, using bulldozers, steam shovels, etc. Then, after the moat is built, fill it with water from the Gulf of Mexico. There’s your moat. Then, take all the leftover mines from World War II and Vietnam and mine the moat. Then add alligators. Lots of alligators.

Forget the fence, vote for a moat! It’s quicker, easier and cheaper. Plus, a moat would be low maintenance; no border patrol, no surveillance, no Minutemen and you don’t even have to feed the alligators.

And, politically, to appease extreme left wing liberals, environmentalists and our friends and neighbors south of the border (who benefit greatly from their poor and unemployed leaving there and coming here - and sending tens of billions of American dollars back there) we could call the moat a “irrigation, recycling and wildlife project”.

You want a secure border? You want to stop people from illegally entering the U.S. from Mexico? Forget the fence, vote for a moat!

How to Write an Ebook I

An ebook is a book written using a computer that is distributed electronically. Although it can be printed out, the definition of an ebook is one that can be downloaded or emailed. It is not a hard product such as a book you can purchase from a bookseller. However, ebooks are gaining in popularity and unless they take notice, booksellers could end up as most record or CD stores are heading for: redundant with no product to sell except to antique lovers.

I don’t think that this will happen very quickly, since there is nothing like the feel of a well bound book in your hands, and you can’t read an ebook using a torch under your bedcovers after lights out. Ebooks are not so much fun, but they can make you money, so how do you write one.

You need a computer, of course, and a word processor. Microsoft Word is fine, but most word processors are suitable for writing ebooks. Let’s assume that you have a subject to write about, since choosing subjects is a different topic altogether. So you have your subject and you have done your research. Basically you have all the material you need to write your book. What next?

The title. A lot depends on what kind of book you are writing. Is it a novel? In which case just write it, and come back to this page in a few months. If not, it is informational. All non-novel books provide information. So think on a title with the knowledge that an ebook has to be sold on the internet, and keywords come into the equation. If your book is about fishing, something about fishing must be in the title, and you will find that the use of keywords in the title of internet ebooks is no different from those used in the title of printed books.

SEO - How To Calculate the Bandwidth and Disk Space For Your Website

One important aspect of search engine optimization is functionality and of course that means that your site must always be up and running. This means choosing a host that will provide you with all of the web space that you will need to keep all of the features that you have on your site running twenty four hours a day and seven days a week.

The best web hosting services will offer at least 20-80GB of disk space for a regular account and more for premium or advanced accounts. You know you are dealing with a lousy web hosting company if they offer less disk space than that as it is an obvious ploy to cheat you. In fact there are also many companies offering just 1GB for the same price you would pay for a site with 80GB. The best way to avoid being fooled like this is to check the comparison charts that are so often a part of these sites. If you don’t compare the features before buying a web hosting service, you could get ripped off (as well as end up with a site that may be down.)

When looking for a good web host keep in mind the bandwidth size you will need as well. To find the perfect bandwidth for you need to multiply the size of each page that your site will need (an estimation will do) times the number of page views you are expecting to get a month. This way you calculate the actual bandwidth that will be consumed by your online business and make the correct choice when it comes to purchasing a website.

Never underestimate the importance of these two features as they become crucial factors in keeping your website available to your customers, especially if you become a success and your website becomes very busy!

Antioxidant Vitamin C Facial Fights Free Radicals

Environmental damage such as over exposure to the sun can cause damage to the skin. You may be using any of a number of seemingly potent sunblock products in the hope of alleviating damage to your face and skin.

Your skin may also be damaged when exposed to oxygen. This is known as oxidation and may cause premature aging of the skin.

Many sunblock lotions that carry an SPF or sun protection factor of more than 15 have been demonstrated to block most ultra violet light. The problem is that some ultraviolet light still permeates the skin and has the potential of free radical creation, which can cause age spots and wrinkles.

There is good news, that you can take advantage of daily. Using Vitamin C, an antioxidant, may combat oxidation and has been shown by studies to help prevent skin cancer. It also helps slow the aging effects of environmental toxins. Vitamin C can help you in the fight against the creation of free radicals.

The human body can not create Vitamin C. Not only that, there is a finite amount of Vitamin C that can be assimilated via food and Vitamin C supplements.

Due to our inability to create Vitamin C or to absorb sufficient Vitamin C by way of nutrients and supplements, many skin care professionals believe that the best approach is to apply Vitamin C topically to the skin in a Vitamin C facial.

The benefit of a Vitamin C facial is that we can absorb more Vitamin C and garner the benefit of the antioxidant qualities in our facial treatments.

Repeated treatments of a Vitamin C facial may help you develop a Vitamin C reservoir of sorts, negating the harmful effects of free radicals to your skin. With the use of Vitamin C you will also be fighting the effects of oxidation. The wrinkles and aging appearance that is a consequence of oxidation and free radical creation may soon begin to diminish.

The result will be a slowing of the aging appearance of skin, lessened lines and wrinkles and a healthier, more radiant skin. For that reason it is important to incorporate Vitamin C into your facial regimen.

How to Write an Ebook II

The keyword in the title sells the book! “Fishing for Salmon” is the same whether printed or on a computer. You could introduce some humor, but it would work the same for both media, for example “Water in My Boots: Fly Fishing for Beginners”, would sell just as much online as offline.

So, you have your title. Now write a few words on what the book is about. No more than a page or even a few lines are enough.

“I am writing this book because I remember how confused I was with regard to the different types of fishing when I was a youngster, and ‘fishing’ was simply catching fish. Not brown fish or red fish, just fish. And I was more confused when I read about ‘fly fishing’. How do you fish for flies, I wondered. So I was fascinated and decided to learn this apparently useless skill. It soon became apparent that I did not ‘fish’ for the flies. First I had to make them! Or even ‘tie’ them! Confused isn’t the word!!”

That’s a good start to getting someone interested in your book. Then you have to keep them there, though you are not trying to sell anything. You are writing a book on fly fishing. What you have to remember is that your paragraphs will probably be smaller since lots of text on a screen can be difficult to read. Your font and font size is also important. Too big and you will have far too many pages; too small and it will be unreadable to many people. Practice with a few but both Ariel and Verdana were designed for online reading. You can’t go far wrong with either.

How to Write an Ebook III

While you write it is important that you check your spelling and grammar regularly, since it can be a chore to check the whole ebook once you have finished. Get into the habit of saving now and again since, although if you are using Word it saves your work in the event of a crash, you lose it all if you accidentally delete it. A slip of the finger with the mouse could easily land on that red square at the top right, or somebody, perhaps the kids, could touch the wrong keys and delete a day’s work.

When you have finished, have somebody read it over for you. You can get used to your own writing and grammar and miss a few schoolboy errors. You might even not know they are errors!

The usual format for an ebook is PDF, so you will need a PDF writer. You can get them free on the internet, but keep the original since you may have to edit your ebook, and most free PDF writers don’t have an edit facility. Don’t produce it in .exe format since many people don’t like .exe ebooks due to the possibility of viruses. Don’t publish in Microsoft Word because Mac users can’t use Word.

That’s how to write an ebook, and if you follow the advice all should be plain sailing - or fishing!

It will be hard work, but simple. Do not make it any harder than it should be.
