Workplaces, and how we view them, have changed dramatically since the beginning of the 20th century. Particularly in the last 30 years, the complexity of business has grown enormously, making traditional jobs nearly obsolete. With punishing, productivity-sapping expectations and vise-like deadlines the norm, old assumptions about how to work and how to advance are out of date. Today, if you want to work in the traditional workplace, don’t expect the same work environment your parents probably experienced. You need to be ready for a brutal, 80-hour-a-week “extreme” job. You need to accept that your workspace is a little cubical on the third floor, where people driven to excel and win at all costs surround you. It is likely that you will come in early, stay late, and work weekends. And, in the end, there is no guarantee that all this hard work will help you get promoted or keep you from being down-sized.

Today’s Workplace

Today’s workplace is driven by an information and communications technology that wouldn’t have been considered in previous generations. In addition, it is fueled by a Baby Boomer generation whose dominant characteristic is individualism and supported by Gen Xers who aren’t motivated to do anything unless they find meaning in it. These harbinger trends of our times are, arguably, the most significant factors that have influenced our changing workplace and how we think about work.

Many recommend that those who want to make money on eBay end their auctions on weekend days or evenings. While this works for those sellers, there is more to it than just picking a day and ending on that day. It involves knowing your products and your customers to make the ending day and time decision.

Sellers who want to make money on eBay need to conduct the research that is required to know their target customer. They need to know when that target customer prefers to shop on eBay. Sellers need to know when that target customer is most likely to be ready, willing and able to make the purchase of their item.

In our case many of our products are targeted for stay at home moms. We have found through testing that our target buyer will buy throughout the week. They prefer BUY IT NOW to make their purchases. They do not make as many purchases on weekends. For us to make money on eBay we need to end auctions on weekdays and routinely use the BUY IT NOW option on our products.

On the other end of the spectrum is the buyer who works Monday through Friday and prefers to make purchases on weekends. If your product is targeted at that buyer respond accordingly. To make money on eBay requires that you end auctions on the weekend for this customer.

Do you want to make money on eBay? Know your target buyer and that target buyer’s preferences. Accommodate those preferences in the day and time that you end your auctions. Both you and your buyer will win when you use this strategy.

It’s been 12 years, but I can tell you the name of the gelatteria in Florence where we had the best gelato (it was Vivoli). How about the little restaurant in Marigot, St. Martin where we watched the sun set (La Vie en Rose)? With a collection of journals for every one of our trips, I can recall the entire itinerary.

My favorite journal books are 3 x 5 or smaller with lined pages. They are easy to keep in my back pocket and when time permits (e.g. on the beach, in the train, on the plane, in the restaurant), I make cryptic entries about where we have been, how we got there, the restaurants and museums we visited, the challenges of speaking the language of the locals, and the characters we meet along the way. Some people are devoted to Moleskine journals, but I’m not that fussy. As long as it’s saddlestitched and not wirebound (hurts when you sit on them), I don’t care. In fact, having different types of journal books for different trips makes it easier when I go back to look up some particulars.

With the advent of blogging and sites like myspace, many people are coming back from their trips with their journals and converting them into web diaries, complete with pictures. The website Travellers Point gives even non-techy types the ability to create an online travel diary, as does another site, Off Exploring. Reading other peoples’ posted journals is not without its perils, since you have absolutely no idea whether they were sane or not when they visited the journal subject. With so many journal sites available to you, it’s easy to consult 10 diaries on the ins and outs of visiting Tulum, Mexico. Of course there is also the theory that if you ask 10 people you’ll get 10 opinions, but the vicarious meanderings of travel writer wannabes can be very entertaining.

Reading over journals from trips past is a bittersweet pleasure. I love remembering the little vignettes (giving a fellow passenger on an Italian train an Altoid mint and then trying to discuss in Italian and English how curiously strong they are) but also have to come to terms with the fact that I cannot travel the same way anymore. No more 70 pound backpacks or 6 countries in 10 days for me. But that’s okay, because now I want to see the world differently - as in slower. I want to take the time to sit in a cafe and watch the other tourists rushing by, and coincidentally, that gives me even more time to write in my journal.
