Can You Smell That Smell?

After 2 months of learning about the Tabernacle in the wilderness, I learned that there are 50 chapters dedicated to this subject. That can only mean that God does not want us to miss this message. It is the foreshadowing of the Cross and how to obtain salvation through Christ. Since I take turns with another woman teaching Biblical lessons, I am responsible for the subjects that are taught when it’s my turn to teach. Often times the subjects are chosen for me as I feel the tugging of the Holy Spirit directing me. With so much left to discuss on this subject, I felt led to go deeper into certain parts of this study. One of them is the “strange fire” that was offered up to the Lord by two of Aaron’s sons. Not only is it a part of passage, but it also has an important message for believers today. If we aren’t offering up the right kind of praise and worship to the Lord, we will ulitimately face the same consequences that Nadab and Abihu experienced for their grave disobedience…death!

When God talked to Moses, He set up 4 things that would set the platform for His ultimate plan of salvation. The first thing we learn about is His Law of the Ten Commandments. This reminds us that we are all sinners and need to recognize them. The second thing He gives us is the foundation of Christianity through the Tabernacle. Then He gives Moses the sacrificial offerings which also lead us from sinful man to salvation through Christ who became the Sacrificial Lamb. It is His blood that appeased God and made our salvation possible. And lastly, God gave Moses the Levitical priesthood that points to our High Priest, Jesus Christ. God is very explicit when He gave Moses His plan. God does things in detail and it’s not for us to assume that anything has changed. What was true in Moses’ day, still rings true today. Why have we veered so far off the path? I do believe that if we don’t sit up and smell the roses, we will be in for a rude awakening soon. Time is running out for all of us. What can we learn from Nadab and Abihu?

In Exodus 28, God is telling Moses that He is appointing his brother Aaron to be His high priest in order to minister to Him. Since we are all priests through the blood, we are still responsible to minister to God. That is our main duty in life to this day. (1 Pt. 2:9). God also calls Aaron’s 4 sons into the ministry. God is giving Moses in detail the clothing that they must wear. This also typifies Christ as it describes “glory and beauty”. The main duty for the priests were to deal with the sacrifices and the service. They had to go through an ordination much like priests and pastors today. If there is anything being done that God has not foreordained, it will be exposed eventually and destroyed. In other words, we cannot change the way God has commanded our service to Him to be. He will not accept any “strange fire” that is offered, no matter how sweet it may smell to us!

“Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. And fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.” Leviticus 10:1,2

The Bible doesn’t say exactly what this “strange fire” consisted of, only that the Lord did not command it. The original fire for the Brazen Altar was started by God and it was not to go out. The priestly duties were to keep that fire going. Perhaps these two overly confident young men thought they could use something different or act irreverently towards God and He wouldn’t notice. But not so, God saw them just as he sees us today.

“Then Moses said to Aaron, “It is what the Lord spoke, saying, ‘By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, and before all the people I will be honored.’ ” So Aaron therefore, kept silent.” Leviticus 10:3

It is clear that both Nadab and Abihu violated both requirements of God’s absolute standard. The priests had received repeated and solemn warnings as to the necessity of reverence before God (Ex.19:22; 29:44). For this reason, Aaron could not grieve and complain for his sons. He had to submit to the reverence of God or risk being struck down as well. Due to their disrespect of the Lord, they were considered defiled and none of the priests could touch them for fear of defiling themselves as well. Aaron’s cousins, Mishael and Elzaphan were instructed to carry the ashes out in their coats to be tossed outside of the camp with the ashes of the animal sacrifices. This was a lesson for all to see and take heed of God’s wrath towards disobedience. To make matters even worse for these two men, it is possible that they were intoxicated when they did this. Leviticus 10:9 might suggest this is what happened.

“Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the tent of meeting, so that you will not die~it is a perpetual statute throughout your generations~and so as to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and so as to teach the sons of Israel all the statutes which the Lord has spoken to them through Moses.” Leviticus 10:9-11

What we are to take from this today is that aside from Christ, we simply can NOT please God. We are instructed to always be sober minded. This doesn’t just mean sober from alcohol, but to be ’spiritualy’ sober. This is to be steadfast, having self-control and to be clear headed with the ability to be moraly decisive. This speaks of a ’sober’ Christian who is correctly in charge of his priorities and not intoxicated with allurements of lust. Apparently Nadab and Abihu were not thinking clearly. We have a very real advocate who roams around as a roaring lion seeking whom he can devour. This enemy is spreading his lies in the churches today by telling us that God will over look our sins because He loves us. If Christ is not in that equation, God’s judgment will come quickly. Like Nadab and Abihu, His wrath will destroy us. It doesn’t paint a pretty picture but it is truthful. Satan would have us believe that God doesn’t care about our sins.

It’s time God’s people take back the truth that it’s spelled out in the Old Testament. Why? Because He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He does not change. He will never adapt around our so called “no relative truth” theory. His truth is relative and His rules don’t pick and choose. They are the same rules and apply to everyone. If the speed limit is 55 mph, then everyone must obey that rule. We can’t pick the speed that we feel suits us. If we go over that speed limit, we will pay a steep fine and consequenses will follow. It’s our choice, we can approach life with a sober mind and live or we can get drunk on self importance and die. In life and in the spiritual, we have been forewarned!

There are “strange fires” being lit all over the churches today. We are making our own strange brand of doctrines to please ourselves. Just listen to the news and what we are accepting of. There apparently is no right or wrong way to live anymore. For more information on your Christian rights, visit the website for the ‘American Family Association’. In a world that’s constantly changing, you can trust in God’s unchanging Word.

Some Tips For The Beginner In Mutual Fund Investing

Have you ever thought about buying stock, but were afraid to ask? If you are like many of us who never invested in the stock market, you are probably wishing you had made that one time investment in Google, right? Or perhaps many of you are retired, and the 401K plan you currently maintain with your employer is yielding very good results. Yet, if you were asked what your stock’s portfolio consists of, you would probably say, “I don’t have a clue!” To enable you to understand the inner sanctum of the stock market, here are some tips for the beginning investor.

Most likely, your company is diversifying by investing in mutual funds. What are they? Mutual funds are low-risk investments, which are also diversified. For example, let’s assume you are contributing monies per paycheck to your companies’ 401K Plan. You elect to have a portion of your wage paid directly into the 401K account. You can select from a number of investment options, usually an assortment of mutual funds that encompass stocks, bonds, money market investments, which is referred to as Variable A or B. If one of the securities in the fund happens to have a bad run, there is always the chance that other securities in the fund’s holdings will be able to offset the losses. Conversely, any large gains in one security might be offset by losses in another. Most investors and companies use mutual funds in order to diversify their holdings and provide some stability to their portfolios. Your employer is probably investing in mutual funds to yield higher gains.

How do mutual funds work? Mutual funds raise money by selling shares of the fund to the public. Mutual funds then take the money they receive from the sale of their shares and use it to purchase various investments, such as stocks, bonds and money market accounts. In return for the money they give to the fund when purchasing shares, shareholders receive an equity position in the fund and in each of its underlying securities. Benefits of mutual funds include diversification and professional money management.

Is investing in mutual funds a good idea for the beginning investor? Yes I would definitely suggest that your initial step into the some what murky field of investing be the ultra safe and prudent mutual fund industry. Starting at an early age with systematic contributions into a mutual fund is a good balance to the somewhat riskier funds that are the darlings of Wall Street. Having a good portfolio begins with a stable , cautious fund for example with a reasonable proportion of its assets being those nice safe bonds. Using that type of fund as a counterweight you could then move cautiously into the more risky area of stocks of all kinds and other instruments. There are a lot of different ways that Wall Street can take your money but one of the safest ways to invest is mutual funds.

Top Ten Values for “Big City” Retirement

Big cities provide the ideal environment for those wanting a stimulating and active retirement. So if the idea of spending your “golden years” golfing and fishing leaves you cold, don’t rule out the vast offerings of “big city” life. While New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston, are certainly “pricey”, many attractive big cities are exceptions to this general rule. They offer retirees an opportunity to lower their cost of living while continuing to enjoy the amenities and excitement of a large city. Warren Bland, PhD has just compiled his list of “Top Ten Values for Big-City Retirement”. They are ranked from 1 to 10 based on their cost of living. All scored well on the 12 criteria utilized to evaluate places in his book “Retire in Style: 60 Outstanding Places across the USA and Canada”.

The top ten value cities, rank-ordered from lower to higher cost of living are:

1. San Antonio, TX
2. Pittsburgh, PA
3. Austin, TX
4. Atlanta, GA
5. Tucson, AZ
6. Denver, CO
7. Tampa-St. Petersburg, FL
8. Las Vegas, NV
9. Chicago, IL
10. Portland, OR

Dr. Bland’s model uses 12 criteria most important to retirees. They are landscape, climate, quality of life, cost of living, transportation, retail services, health care, community services, cultural activities, recreational activities, work/volunteer activities, and crime.

Bland is a well-known expert in his field. An award-winning geographer and university professor, he has been quoted in AARP Magazine, the NY Times, the LA Times, Consumer’s Digest, US News and World Report and many other leading media sources. Bland is no stranger to “big city” living. He and his wife split their time between Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon.

Whitetail Food Plot, Part 2

This is a continuation of my first article where we covered the site location and preparation of a whitetail food plot. Now I am going to get into the planting part of it. Everything I shared with you in my initial article is about to come into play.

Most people would be spreading their high quality seed over their whitetail food plot and in a short period of time it would germinate, along with the weeds and grasses and the battle would be on. Of course, it’s a battle most are going to lose, and come hunting season the effort they expended in the spring is lost. So what happens? They get to start all over the next year and most probably will end up with the same results. So you can avoid this, I am now going to share with you what I plant, how I plant, and why I plant it.

The first thing I do is spread the amount of fertilizer my soil test called for. Then I take about 1/4 of my food plot and using a hand spreader I broadcast a clover/chicory blend. Now get ready. Here it comes. Soybeans! That’s right. Roundup ready soybeans. I broadcast these at about 30 lbs. per acre. You do not want to have the beans come in very thick. Then I roll the plot once again to make sure all the seed has good soil contact. What I am doing here is sacrificing a small portion a my food plot by planting the chicory/clover mix, and taking control of the main food plot.

As the plantings begin to grow, so will the undesirable weeds and grasses. And that is exactly what I want. When they reach a height of about 4″, I spray the soybean portion of my food plot with a good herbicide. Bingo, the undesirables are gone for now, but most likely not for good. I must mention one thing here. I never let the weeds and grasses go to seed. I spray before they reach that point. If I don’t, then everything I’ve done so far is out the window.

What I have created so far is a whitetail food plot that the deer will visit. It has a little variety. But let’s face it, the deer will mow the soybeans down in short order. At least I hope they do. If that happens, I simply plant some more in the exact same way I did the first time. I do not disturb the soil. Along about July, I will have more weeds and grasses rear their ugly heads and I will treat them as I did earlier.

Now it’s about the middle of August. The little section of chicory/clover is eaten to the ground, and the soybeans are history. But, and this is the good part, the undesirables are gone. It’s now time to bring out the high quality seed and plant a whitetail food plot that will last. Piece of cake. The hard part is already over.

Variety is the spice of life and that is what I am going to offer the deer. So what I am going to do now is section off my whitetail food plot and plant Imperial Whitetail Clover, Imperial Chicory Plus, Imperial Extreme and Imperial Winter Greens. It is important that I do not disturb the soil as I do not want to turn over any more undesirable seeds. I simply broadcast and roll to achieve good soil contact. I will try and do this just before a rain. Then, come the first of October when bowhunting season opens, I will have a plush and pretty much weedless whitetail food plot.

The first or second week of September, I will re-disc the small section I sacrificed earlier and plant Buck Forage Oats. They, along with Imperial Winter Greens, will last well into the winter. Now, I will re-fertilize the entire food plot and call it a day.

The seed that I planted is perennial, so in the spring my whitetail food plot will come in lush with very few weeds. The Oats and Winter Greens are annuals so they must be replanted every fall. Please note. After the initial preparation, I never disturbed the soil of the main plot. Remembering this is vital to the long term success of a whitetail food plot.

A few things I need to mention are: (1) I live in Indiana so adjust your planting times accordingly; (2) never use a bush hog or mower on your whitetail food plot without thoroughly cleaning it first; and (3) if you missed the first part of this article, you can find it on my blog.

Stuck! A Metaphor of Mud and Snow

Have you ever been stuck? Ever been in a rut that you couldn’t get out of easily? Ever felt that the harder you tried, the more you spun your wheels and the deeper you buried yourself? A friend of mine once found herself, quite literally, in this situation. As she backed down my steep driveway in a snowstorm (ironically on the first official day of spring), her car slipped into and became stuck in my garden. From her story, I hope you’ll find strategies to apply as you move through sticky situations in your own life.

ASSESS THE SITUATION
Her car was in a tough spot. There was a small boulder to the right of the car, a boxwood shrub to her left, and our mailbox was two feet behind her. To make matters worse, her front tires were dug so far into the snow that the nose of her car was level with the driveway and ground. The only way out appeared to be to reverse course-to move up the slope in order to get back onto the driveway.

ASK FOR HELP
Fifteen or twenty minutes must have passed between the time I said goodbye to my friend and the time I realized she was stuck. It was my past boy’s bedtime, so it wasn’t until after reading to them and tucking them in that I looked out of a window and saw headlights in my garden. My friend had been going it alone the whole time, attempting to move forward, but had only become more deeply mired in the snow and dirt. Realizing her plight, I immediately put on my coat and boots and went out to help.

LOOK AT WHAT YOU HAVE GOING FOR YOU
We had some tools at our disposal-shovels, some sand, a blanket for traction, and people I could round up to push if needed. Since we’d both had some experience with cars in snow, we decided to first go with what we knew best.

CLEAR THE WAY
Snow was packed tightly between her front tires and the rim of the car, so first we dug that out to free up her wheels. We also cleared away the snow in front and in back of her tires.

USE AN INCREMENTAL APPROACH
Our initial attempt was to spread sand in front of the tires, hoping that would give her tires something to grip onto, so she could slowly inch her way back to the driveway.

BE WILLING TO ABANDON PLANS
When shoveling and sanding didn’t make a bit of difference, we knew we had to take another tack. My husband had just finished a business call, so I asked for his assistance and suggestions.

EXPLORE DIFFERENT OPTIONS
Instead of fighting an uphill battle, my husband recommended removing the mailbox and backing out through the garden into the street. My friend and I had assumed that the mailbox was a fixed obstacle. Not so! Since it had never been cemented in, it easily lifted out.

CREATE MOVEMENT
Even though the ultimate plan was go backward, moving slightly forward and backward to create a rocking motion is what finally got the car to budge. It’s counterintuitive to move in a different direction that you want to go, but often ANY sort of movement is enough to get things rolling.

GIVE A GOOD PUSH TO KEEP IT GOING
Once the car started to move, a few strong pushes helped send it on its way.

Everything turned out fine. My friend made it safely home. My garden escaped remarkably unscathed-the only plants affected were the annual mums that I pull out every spring anyway. Since she’s not the only friend who has done battle with our driveway, we now offer a valet service.

I hope one or more of these approaches come in handy the next time you are feeling stuck in mud, in snow, or in life.

How Lightings Can Play a Big Role in Your Photography Career

Does the mention of photography seem hard for you? You obviously haven’t tried digital photography yet! Taking photographs is fun, however taking professional photographs one has to consider the lightings, the exposure, the shutter speed, and even how stable and steady is one’s hand holding the camera still. If questioning a professional, you will hear many terms such as red eye effects, white balance, mega pixels, macro and micro pictures, and much more!

So how does digital photography outdo film photography? In many ways! Digital photography has done most of the automation. For instance it has automatic focusing, lightings, and exposure. No more fiddling with knobs and buttons for those new to photography. Yet there are many settings for the advanced users too. Advanced users can adjust the lightings, reduce the shutter speed and even purposely make a picture have blurred motion effects!

For those of you who like to play with lightings, it will be a challenge which you will learn much of them outdoors. You should keep the optical settings between shots so that your lightings will always stay the same. Something you should know about lightings is the timing. When you taking photos, try to take photos at the same time of the day with the similar kind of lightings. It’ll work great if the weather conditions is stable. For instance if today is a bright sunny day and tomorrow is a cloudy day, your picture will have a vast distinct difference and the major factor could be your lightings. Image manipulation software such as Photoshop could do some light effects however nothing can be compared to an original good shot.

Have you ever tried to take a shot in close range? You might know of the function call macro however after taking a shot, the flash brightens up the picture so bright, the whole screen is white in color. You must choose a right angle, get a different light source, or point your flash in a different direction which will reflect on to the close proximity object. It is no doubt very hard to achieve it. For this reason, macro shots should always be taken in highly lit environment for instance daylight.

In conclusion, a simple things such as lightings can play a major role in your journey as a photographer. It takes a lot of practice to achieve good and high quality pictures. The concepts that you learn from film photography can be applied into digital photography. All you need to do is adjust your self to the new settings found in digital photography camera.

Jewelry Watches Match Style And Substance

When it comes to the marriage of form and function - especially in the world of style and fashion - the two are often mutually exclusive. Fashionable clothes are rarely the most comfortable, and a good looking coat is never as warm as the classic, yet utilitarian, parka. However, there are fashionable accessories that can not only look great, but serve an important function as well, and those accessories are jewelry watches.

Often made of gold or others precious metals - and frequently encrusted with rare gems as well - jewelry watches are the perfect marriage of style and substance, especially when the watch contains a high quality precision movement.

Jewelry watches tell a tacit story about those who wear them. Depending on the style of watch, the story will vary. A classic Rolex speaks to success and power with its 18-karat gold bezel and diamonds marking the hour. Wearing a Rolex watch, with its unmistakable design, sends a message of rugged style and social status which is something even an expensive suit and shoes cannot do. There are few things that one can wear that are as universally recognized as a Rolex watch.

If Rolex tells a tale of status and power, then Cartier announces that the bearer is someone of wealth and high society. Dating back to the 19th century, Cartier watches have a lasting appeal that spans generations and eras. A watch of that magnitude never goes out of style, and it is that quality that makes jewelry watches more than a timepiece and more than a fashion accessory as well.

A pair of Manolo Blahnik boots might turn heads and tell a story about her, just as a Brioni or Giorgio Armani suit tells a story about him, but neither of those high fashion items possess the staying power that watches possess. Clothing and footwear, no matter how well made, will eventually become worn or go out of style.

A $5,000 dollar suit or pair of shoes will not hold its value over time, so, eventually even those Manolo’s will be little more than an old pair of shoes. But a diamond studded Patek Philippe - costing well in excess of $100,000 - will not only hold its value over time, its value will increase. Jewelry watches, in many cases, are more than timepieces or fashion accessories; they are collectables, heirlooms, investments, and works of fine art.

Enjoying jewelry watches is not reserved for those who can spend thousands of dollars on a single timepiece. Some fine watches can be purchased for as little as a few hundred dollars. However, regardless of the price, watches all share some common traits that appeal to their owners.

If you are interested in purchasing such a watch then proceed with caution. While you can probably rest comfortably when dealing with a reputable jeweler -especially if the jeweler is an authorized dealer of the brand you are purchasing - there are many counterfeit watches on the market that require a trained eye to distinguish from the real thing.

Caveat emptor - buyer beware - when looking to purchase watches from any other source, and be sure to do your homework that will help you identify the watch as genuine. With careful planning you can purchase and own jewelry watches that convey your sense of rich style while providing you with a valuable addition to both your wardrobe and your net worth.

Housewarming Gifts – Ideas and Tips

You have an invitation to a housewarming party. You’re searching for just the right housewarming gifts yet nothing seems quite right. What to do?

Moving into a new house is exciting. Follow these simple tips and you’ll be able to choose housewarming gifts just as exciting and innovative as the move. Housewarming gifts that delights and pleases simply take a bit of thought.

Get Ready to Shop

The first tip is to do the thinking before you start shopping the aisles of the store or online.
Try to find out as much as you can about the architectural style and the interior design of the new home. This helps to ensure your gift selection is perfectly attuned to style and design.

To make your housewarming gifts selection easier, pick out at least three broad categories of items you think the recipient of the gift likes or enjoys. Three examples might be kitchen and cutlery items, bath accessories, or outdoor living accessories. Try to get a clear vision of the category you think they’d like the most. Next, begin to search for the specific housewarming gifts in that category.

Once you’re ready to do the shopping, it’s a good idea to buy from a specialty retail store. This will give you good value, quality, and unique items you won’t find in a general “shop for everything” department store. Browsing online helps you make your selection and saves time.

For example, let’s assume the new homeowner is moving from a condominium into a house with a yard and garden area. Outdoor tools and accessories would be good housewarming gifts choices. An industrial grade Gardener’s essential tool kit with an assortment of essential gardening tools gives them everything they need for great outdoor plants and maintenance.

Perhaps you know they’re looking for storage items for the bath. A Bath Etagere in a neutral color such as white might be the perfect solution. Fits above and around the top of most commodes, providing cabinetry and shelving for extra storage space.
