Harnessing the power of tidal currents has the potential to provide unheard of clean, renewable energy production. Nanotechnology, with its innovative approach and non-surpassed success rate, may be the conduit needed to perfect the viability of ocean-current power as an alternative energy source.

Ocean currents are a natural phenomena located along most coastlines. The only requirement for harnessing their power is that the currents amalgamate under the surface of the ocean at depths of between eighty to two hundred and thirty feet (25 - 70 meters) with a flow of between five to ten feet per second. Harnessing this type of natural energy production it is not only a feasible undertaking, but is also quite an efficient way of supplying a clean, alternative energy source.

Although tidal power is an amazing concept, wave power also offers a much needed link to cheaper, cleaner power and its availability and conversion is being investigated vigorously in the ongoing race to market an economical, clean, renewable source of energy. Concerting above ground wind turbine units to meet undersea performance is technologically possible and, with a few adjustments, present day wind turbines are easily adapted to harness the awesome power of the sea.

Physicists have studied the gravitational pull of the moon and its effect on ocean currents for eons. Ocean tides are predictable, constant, natural occurrences that are easily forecasted for years in advance. This awesome and essentially untapped source of alternative power is not negatively affected either by adverse weather conditions or climate changes - which makes it ideal for further investigation and implementation.

In order to harness the full power of the ocean, nanotechnology may be just the ticket needed to successfully construct man-made tidal dams designed to control the flow as the tides ebb and recede. Predetermined openings would allow ocean currents to flow up through these gaps into a bay or estuary where the water is collected in the dam-like barrage and then released via a series of sluice gates and through a turbine which in turn generates electricity.

This alternative energy source is well established in La Rance France where a 240 megawatt facility has been operating since 1966. In addition, other, smaller sites have also garnered some success in Canada and in South Korea plans are underway to construct a plant larger than the one in France. However, there is one drawback to this type of power harnessing. Naturalists and environmentalists are concerned with the effects that constant flooding of the barrages has on the delicate ecosystems within the bays and estuaries where they are located.

Nanotechnology scientists are working in close liaison with forward thinking ecologists to correct this deficiency by designing a type of tidal lagoon to house the turbines. Instead of creating dams within the estuary itself, they propose to take advantage of strides in nanotechnology in order to erect man-made lagoons just off shore which would be built up from the seabed and reach out at least one meter above the high tide level. In this type of construction, the turbines would be situated in a wall close to, but not interfering with, the seabed itself. The concept is simple and very effective: the water would flow in through the turbine during high tide filling the lagoon, at low tide the flow would be reversed and the turbines turned in the opposite direction. The result is a generation of electricity in both directions four times a day. Careful placement of the lagoon would be determined by the differential between the maximum heights achievable between high and low tides. Producing energy by this means is anticipated to cost less than any coal fired facility, while protecting and encouraging a positive ecological environment.

Plans are underway to begin construction in several locations off the coast of Wales and China. This combination of conventional technology in partnership with nanotechnology advances has put environmental and ecological issues to rest, yet there is still a viable concern that this type of energy plant may have an adverse effect on shipping lanes. However, these concerns have also been considered and development of barrage ocean turbines that operate independently with little or no interference to ship traffic is well into production stages.

Because narrow passages promote the fastest movement of currents, the feasibility of harnessing huge amounts of power via ocean turbines offers an excellent alternative to nuclear and coal fired energy generating plants. With the reduced threat of ecosystem damage, advanced technology, co-operation between industry and environmental agencies and the almost unlimited locations that can potentially provide ideal conditions for tidal/ocean power harnessing, this type of energy source is generating serious attention worldwide.

Therefore, this begs the question: Is it really necessary to expose our planet and its people to constant ecological threat by continuing to provide nuclear power and its associated danger to the environment? The answer is, unequivocally - No. For those of us who care about living in a cleaner, safer world, it is imperative that we embrace nanotechnology assisted methods of energy generation which are proven to exceed present energy output while reducing the threat of pollution and destruction of our ecosystems.

Dog disobedience and aggression are things dog owners will most likely always have to deal with. You are not alone in this boat. About 75% of dog owners have some type of trouble with their pet. Surprisingly a lot of these owners do not even get help. They let their dog walk all over them until something bad happens. This could be an attack, or even your dog ending up dead. Both of these are horrible options, especially when with just a little work you can have your dog trained. The longer you take to control and train your dog, the harder it will be for you to train it further down the road. So do you and your dog a favor, and get help.

Dog disobedience can include:

  • Biting
  • excessive barking
  • fighting other dogs
  • whining
  • and of course relieving themselves inside

There are many other issues you might be having with your dog. I just listed the basics.

Not only will these problems embarrass you, but your pet could seriously injure someone.

That is when the real problems start.

Your dog’s disobedience can sometimes be caused by poor guidance by the owner, not knowing how or what to say to your dog, and not using the proven strategies.

The good thing is all of these problems can be fixed before they get real bad. You can sometimes fix a problem with an older dog, but obviously they will need more work.

You know you cannot teach old dogs new tricks(Well not always). Some types of dogs are easier than others to train. Some might be a little more trouble. Either way, it’s not to hard if you know the right steps.

There are a lot of things wrong with this world. The vitality of the United States of America is threatened.

All nations are weakened with time. When I was growing up, my father studied the Russian language for ten years. He said that the Soviet Union would have dramatic changes and that he intended to some day serve a mission there for the Mormon Church. Dad died in 1988 at age eighty-eight and his dream did not come true. But his prediction did. There are now many missionaries in the former Soviet Union from many churches because of the drastic changes predicted by my father..

I can still say a few Russian words because of my father. One night years ago I flew out of London over Finland and then over the Soviet Union. I stayed awake all night because the moon was full and I could see the beauty of that country, the great forest and rivers. I had no inkling then, other than the words of my father, that that great nation would founder.

Well, our great nation will founder too. The current administration is accelerating the process.

The president, no genius, has run his office using the buddy system . He has shown, and is still showing, fierce loyalty to incompetents and their ridiculous management of governmental affairs. Every blunder is followed by the selection of a scapegoat. From Katrina to the current Attorney General, someone has or will fall because of White House stupidity.

The greatest blunder was the ridiculous assumption that we had to go into Iraq to avenge the destruction of the Twin Towers. By going into Iraq, with the stupid premise that we would be welcomed by the survivors of the first Bush War-who had lost many loved ones to our bombs and gunfire-we weakened our efforts to destroy the Taliban and Osama bin Laden.

Osama bin Laden will die of old age before this administration will ever find that murderer. (I keep saying that he is drinking lemonade in Mecca but nobody will listen.)

Al-Qaeda was not in Iraq before Bush War II. It is in full force there now and all Iraqis are now joining to fight al-Qaeda before it takes over their country. There are some differences between the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

The prime mover to the destruction on the United States as the financial powerhouse of the world is the trade deficit. We have not protected our valuable technologies that came at high cost to us. We give them away for peanuts to make other countries rich.

We have not protected our workers. You can’t blame only the President for the current situation. You have to blame our large corporations who in the last decades have done everything they could to reduce operating cost. The driving force has always been competition and the profit banana that low operating cost offers.

I’ve sat in many a corporate meeting where we looked at every country in the world to determine where we could obtain the lowest cost. We decided that we could produce our products in the United States at low cost with proper engineering. We built two new plants and re-engineered another. Eventually, competition forced the company to import from overseas manufacturers and only one of the factories is still operating. Most everything is now imported.

One way to force down labor cost is to import foreign workers. Many European nations have done this. In the United States, we have never set up a workable plan allowing foreign workers to come to the United States. However, the economy always runs itself and borders or laws can not restrict it for long.

Foreign workers from Mexico and Central America have swarmed across our borders. These workers are employed from Donald Trump’s casinos in Atlantic City to ceramic factories in Los Angeles. They supply the needed labor for our agricultural operations here in Idaho.

I visited a ceramic factory in California some years back where Immigration had “raided” the factory and sent off a large number of employees across the border to Tijuana. The next day, they were all back at work again. When I lived in Atlantic City I knew Mexicans who had changed their names and had fake papers verifying that they were indeed Puerto Ricans with American citizenship.

If it were not for illegal immigration, more American jobs would be overseas. Why is this so? I look at it this way. Many of the best factory and service jobs are still held by Americans. If the labor jobs go overseas, so do those jobs.

China and Japan and other foreign countries buy our debt and our securities. If these financial instruments (such as stocks and bonds) are threatened, they will be traded for more reliable investments if safer investments can be found. Asians often think of gold and silver as “real money.” The stability of the United States is very important to these countries but some do no feel that they have to support our misguided foreign policies. If China were supporting our interest, we would be doing what we do at lower cost.

As the value of our currency slides the threat of major international financial changes is real. China is in a rock and a hard place. They do not want to weaken their own currency and they do not want to have to make major adjustments to their financial positions. The fact of the matter is that the economy always takes care of itself and it doesn’t give one hoot for what China and others think.

The administration has brought the United States close to bankruptcy. I don’t like to think about another Great Depression, however, that is the road on which we trod.

Because of Bush War II, the President was reelected. Americans do not like to change horses midstream especially if there is a hot war going on and we had fighting men in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Some probably thought that the President would profit from his four years of experience and do a better job. The fact of the matter is that the President is doing the best job that he knows how to do. He would have done and would be doing a much better job if he had competent and experienced advisors directing him instead of his buddies.

It would have been a great service to the people of the United States if the Vice President had followed the example of most all other Vice Presidents. He should have spent his time hunting and fishing. His personal interest in big oil and Haliburton have help cripple our economy mostly due to bad judgment, exorbitant waste, and overspending.

The privacy of United States citizens has been jeopardized. There has been too little thought given to the internal security of the United States. There is insufficient protection of our monetary system. We can not respond to natural disasters in a timely efficient manner.

But those and other such problems are not the main problem which is that: We have too few strong-minded but intelligent people in the halls of Congress, people who know what America is all about, what the constitution guarantees, and how to conduct business in an efficient manner.

Congress sits back on its partisan haunches and dabbles in government. Public service is actually public disservice. Decisive intelligent argument is missing. Congressional debate is more a congressional harangue, each speaker more interested in himself than the people of the United States.

Who can resolve this situation?

The politicians?

When the American people stop following party and media propaganda and start thinking for themselves, then changes for the better will come. The political parties and the lobbyist have too much influence on government. We need to lessen their influence.

The United States is not a Democracy, it is a Republic where we rely on constitutional representation. When that representation is not working, we need to resort to Democracy where every person thinks for himself and acts accordingly. In America, that means to vote the incompetents out of office regardless of party.

You still don’t know what to do? Well, just buy American!

The End

While most leave acne behind with their teenage years, some carry the scars of their acne through their adult life. Since these scars can have an affect on the bearer’s self confidence and self image, it is important to learn to deal with these scars.

Perhaps the first step in dealing with acne scars is avoiding them in the first place. Once acne scars exist, it is extremely hard to get rid of them. Here are some tips to help avoid the acne scar, information on different types of scars and removal methods for the acne scar.

The first line of defense against the acne scar is to properly treat breakouts of acne when they first appear. Without acne, it is impossible to have an acne scar. With the number of acne medications now available there is no reason for acne sufferers not to receive proper treatment.

Another note for acne sufferers who don’t wish to live with scars - resist the urge to pop your pimples. This action can cause more damage to the skin and can actually make scars worse.

When dealing with the acne scar, there are two main types of scars. These are the ice-pick type scar and the keloid scar. The ice-pick scar is a depressed area that looks like damage that may have been done by an ice-pick. Keloid scars are raised areas caused by the build up of collagen in the skin resulting in a raised mass. Staining of the skin by acne is often confused with acne scars. Unlike scars, however, staining fades over time and may even disappear completely.

Removal of an acne scar can be a complex and costly procedure. Some of the more well known methods include dermabrasion, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, punch techniques and augmentation.

Dermabrasion, which is a surgical scraping of the skin, works well on shallow acne scars. However, this procedure will set you back about $1,500 per treatment. In laser surgery, layers of damaged skin are removed using a laser. This procedure can cost $3,000 or more per treatment. Chemical peels are a less expensive option, coming in at $750 each treatment. These peels, however, are only effective on the most minor acne scar.

Two options for ice-pick scars include punch techniques and augmentation. In the punch techniques, the acne scar is surgically “punched” out using an appropriately sized biopsy tool. The remaining skin is stitched together resulting in a smaller scar that is more receptive to dermabrasion or other resurfacing techniques.

In augmentation, a substance, either collagen or the person’s own fat, is injected under the scar to bring it to level with the rest of the skin. Again, this procedure is costly and the results are only temporary, repeated procedures are required.

Although acne scars can be removed, the procedures are costly and the results may not be the same as undamaged skin. The best way to avoid the acne scar is to get proper treatment for your acne as soon as possible. Also don’t pick at, squeeze or attempt to pop your acne as this can make scarring worse.

Health Benefits of Dark Chocolates

We have known for a long time that you have to cut back on sweets if you want to lose weight, maintain a healthy heart and live as long as possible. Right? However, new evidence shows otherwise, at least where dark chocolates are concerned. It seems that high blood pressure and even heart disease may be helped by dark chocolate rather than exacerbated by it.

When reading this information don’t let it go to your head too much. Yes, dark chocolates have been shown to be beneficial. But that doesn’t mean you should eat too much of it or that you have free reign over white chocolate or even milk chocolate. It’s dark chocolates we are talking about here.

In several studies dark chocolate has lowered high blood pressure in many participants. That is great news and while chocolate is enjoyable to eat it is also a lot healthier than prescription drugs. Remember, though, that you can’t just eat all the chocolate you want. You can eat some and if you have mild high blood pressure and are of a certain age then the dark chocolate will more than likely help you. But, you must balance your caloric intake and know that if you are eating dark chocolate that you will need to cut calories elsewhere.

Believe it or not, but dark chocolate also has antioxidants. However, you must eat it alone. Don’t accompany the dark chocolate with a big glass of milk or else you will eliminate the antioxidant effect. Antioxidants are great because they attack and eliminate free radicals, the culprits of many diseases including heart disease. A study with 13 individuals ages 55-64 who had mild high blood pressure took part in a study. Half were given a 100 gram dark chocolate candy bar and the other half a 100 gram white chocolate candy bar. They had to eliminate 480 other calories from their diet to make up for eating the chocolate. Over the course of the two week study the individuals who ate the dark chocolate saw a significant drop in their blood pressure. In fact, the average was five systolic points and two diastolic points.

The individuals who ate white chocolate did not see the same results. Another study used the same amount of people but in the 25-35 age range. They ate 100 grams of dark chocolate one day, 100 grams of dark chocolate with a small glass of milk another day, and finally 200 grams of milk chocolate. The study found that eating dark chocolate by itself results in the most total antioxidants in the blood. Many of us prefer milk chocolate to dark chocolate because it is smoother, sweeter and not as bitter. But, it is dark chocolate that makes the health difference and it is still sweet and good. So, why is dark chocolate the answer? It’s because it contains cocoa phenols, which lower blood pressure. If you want to try this remedy then cut out bad things in your diet like colas, carnival foods, and the like to make up for the 500 plus calories in a bar of chocolate. Then you can have your chocolate and enjoy the cardiovascular benefits! Remember to take good care of your teeth as well when eating all that chocolate because tooth health has a direct connection to cardiovascular health. Now, go buy you some dark chocolate.

The bowling alley is a popular entertainment center for people of all ages. No matter where you are, in the modern day, it is difficult to drive very far without passing a bowling alley. The sport of bowling has steadily increased in popularity over the past century, which has, in turn, increased the demand to support this game.

Although the sport of bowling has been traced back to 3200 BC Egypt, standardization of the game did not come into play until the late-19th century. In the primitive stages of the game people set the pins at the end of each lane after each player bowled. These pinsetters were later replaced by a mechanical pinsetter that would automatically set the pins after each bowl. This efficiency was the dawn of technology in the bowling alley, and helped to spur even more interest in bowling. The mechanical ball return also did the same for the game.

With bowling organizations for all groups of people “men, women, and children” bowling has become a sport oriented to families as well as people of all ages. In many cases, a bowling alley will offer special attractions geared toward all age groups, including video games, table games, and snack bars. At night, many turn down the bright lights, turn up the black lights, and employ the use of fluorescent colored pins and decorations in conjunction with popular music to add to the entertainment factor and draw a young, hip crowd. Additionally, it often will provide space to accommodate children’s birthday parties and community fund raising events.

The term “alley” has often carried the connotation of a dark, dingy, smoky lair of gambling and other crooked affairs. It was this same connotation that caused all early ninepins alleys to be outlawed in Connecticut in the mid-19th century, which in turn, created the common tenpins played in North America. It is increasingly popular for a bowling alley to be referred to as a bowling center. This helps to promote the more positive and friendly environment for which bowling has truly come to be known. It is also a more realistic representation of what is in store for those who enter the doors of their local bowling “establishment.”

At first glance, one may argue that each bowling center is the same. Dozens of bowling lanes, countless bowling balls lined up on tiered racks for bowlers to utilize, multi-colored bowling shoes for rent, the arcade, and the snack bar are all common. However, it is the character of each bowling alley that is so alluring. Some are old, some are new; some are smaller and some are quite large; some are decorated with trophies; and some decorated with colorful artwork and murals throughout. But the charm of the atmosphere is never the same from one to the next. Decades of evolution have fashioned it into an indoor entertainment center in which families and friends of all ages can take pleasure.

How to Bust Bureaucracy

“Bureaucracy - any administration where action is impeded by unnecessary procedures”
- Collins Concise English Dictionary

In your own organisation, do you ever think “Why are we doing this?” or “Why aren’t things moving as planned or desired? Do you notice people becoming more difficult to deal with? Do you sense a rising level of frustration? Has your workplace lost its shine? Perhaps it’s becoming or already is bureaucratic.

Often unnoticed in an organisation’s growth is a tendency towards bureaucracy. It’s rarely intentional, yet very common.

Here are some other symptoms of bureaucracy:

- Ineffective meetings - too long, too frequent, too little value.
- Less direct and personal communication - too many emails or “memos”.
- Ever growing procedures and operations “manuals”
- Defensive, protective and internally competitive decisions and behaviour. Shows as fear-based thinking - “we better do this in case…” or “we better not do this in case…”
- Growing sense of mediocrity in human performance.
- Gradual loss of original purpose.

Bureaucracy is cancer of the organisation - unnecessary growth that becomes self-serving.

Because the bureaucracy grows within the culture of the organisation, it is seldom noticed by those within and rarely effectively dealt with by those within - after all, they are the unintentional cause!

Treating bureaucracy requires awareness, courage, determination and correct action with the full commitment of leadership.

Like most cancer treatment, the common approach is to cut burn and poison. The results too often are “It grew back again” or “We cured the bureaucracy but the organisation died”.

Bureaucracy is best prevented and treated by leaders ensuring the culture has these characteristics:

- All systems are simple, connected and serve the prime purpose of the organisation.
- A high level of functional direct personal interaction and communication throughout the organisation.
- Continuous though careful pruning of the unnecessary.
- Always challenging procedure with the “Why” question. If the answer is defensive, protective or fear-based - seek to prune it.
- Avoidance of complacency and blind acceptance of any routine. If anything requires “rationalisation” or “justification” it means something is already not working.
- Well managed yet adventurous risk taking for innovation, simplicity and above all, to best serve the prime purpose of the organisation.
- Allow appropriate time and training for new processes to be properly learned.
- Ensure crystal clear unambiguous communication of correct and useful processes.
- Continuous challenge of continuous growth - it’s not natural! More often it’s actually cancerous growth currently disguised as more profit, more opportunity, diversification etc.
- Stepping outside the organisation frequently to review it holistically.

Experience has shown that executive team meetings designed to eliminate the negative aspects of bureaucratic process are best facilitated by an independent external facilitator, capable of respectfully challenging the discussions.

Experience has also shown that most organisations have no processes designed to minimise bureaucracy, and in fact have processes that unintentionally create it.

Can you imagine the return on investment for designing and implementing a bureaucracy busting process?

Cast iron cookware is some of the best and most popular out there. It is definitely from an older school of design and use, but that definitely does not make it inferior to more recent models! It has long been a favorite choice of many groups, from long time housewives and mothers to independent chefs to serious campers and hikers.

Many people swear that food tests better out of this type of pan than any substitute. Cooking with cast iron is not held to just one group, either. Some of the dishes that are most commonly pointed to as being best out of cast iron include everything from Cajun seafood to Mexican style fajitas to any type of breakfast food. Even cornbread! Such a variety shows what can be done with this cookware.

Cast iron is popular for many different reasons. Unlike say stainless steel, it is an ideal heat conductor and will almost always heat evenly and consistently. It is relatively cheap in comparison with many other types of cookware, and with proper care can last multiple generations, a claim many other types of cookware cannot make.

It is easy to learn to use cast iron, and since you should preheat your cookware before using, you even get a head start on dinner preparation. One of the most popular methods of checking to know if the pan is ready is to drop a few (not many) drops of water on the pan. If the drops sizzle, then the pan is ready. If it disappears instantly, then you need to cool the pan down a little.

One important note: do not pour large amounts of cold liquid into a hot pan, since this is the one thing that can cause the cast iron to break.

Proper care of cast iron is most often referred to as “seasoning.” This type of pan is unusual in that it is not supposed to be scrubbed often. Seasoning, instead, is when you embed oil and grease into the pores of the iron cookware, which prevents rust.

Seasoning is done by warming the pot or skillet, then rubbing a thin layer of shortening or corn oil all over the surface of the pan, inside and out. Afterward, lay the pot or skillet upside down inside a 350-degree oven. Most suggest one hour, while some other manufactures suggest as many as 4-5. The shortening will turn in to a non-sticky, hard coating. Allow the pan to cool overnight.

Cast iron retains heat effectively; so make sure to allow plenty of time to cool so you don’t burn your hands. Seasoning should be repeated after each use of the cookware. As one downside: be wary of using acidic foods, which can deteriorate the seasoning, which makes the pan itself more vulnerable to rust and damage.

Wash cast iron in hot water only, and dry. Seasoning is always important, and you don’t want to scrub unless absolutely necessary, because scrubbing will take away the layer of shortening that protects the pots from rust. If you have to scrub, then make sure you season the pan afterwards to repair its protective coat. Drying over heat is also important. It can be dried over an oven burner turned on low.

While the maintenance of cast iron may seem daunting, it is actually easy, and the high quality of food, affordability of pans, and ability to pass the cookware from generation to generation makes it a tough choice to beat.

Finding Inexpensive Window Covering Solutions

In your home, your windows are probably very important you, as they “provide you eyes unto the world.” Your house wouldn’t be the same without you windows, since you would simply be boxed in with no access to sunlight or a view of the outdoors. Windows are also instrumental in letting sunlight into your home, brightening it up and perhaps warming it on a cold winter’s day. However, windows can also be energy robbers in that they can let warmth escape out of the house in the winter, or otherwise create drafts. Windows themselves can also get broken.

If you need to repair your windows, it can be quite easy. However, once you repair your broken windows, finding suitable window coverings can help keep them from getting broken again. Window coverings can also help protect windows from ever getting broken in the first place.

Where should you go to look for inexpensive window coverings?

First, look at what you’ve got in your house. You might have something in your house already that you can use as a window covering.

Second, be creative. You might have things you never thought of that can be used as window coverings. Or if you’ve got a creative friend or neighbor, have or her come over and see what they can come up with for creative window treatments that won’t cost you much if anything in the way of money.

Third, if you want to buy something ready-made, relatively inexpensive options like shutters are available at most do-it-yourself repair stores.

Fourth, if none of these things seems to strike quite the right chord for you, and you want something that’s custom-made, you can hire a professional. If you have a broken window, of course you’ll need to replace it, but simply having some shutters to close over your broken windows quickly will help a lot until they can get replaced or until you can do it yourself.

Finally, keep in mind that the only real solution for a broken window is to replace it. Although you may not be able to do it quickly, if perhaps the break happens on a weekend, for example, you will need to do it, so keep in mind that any solution you use should be relatively inexpensive unless you intend to keep them long-term to upgrade the value of your home, such as installing shutters, for example. However, having a broken window in your home devalues your home. In addition, most neighborhoods now no longer let you have a broken window as part of the covenant over the long term, since they have specific maintenance requirements for their homeowners to follow. Therefore, the only final solution, of course, for a broken window is to repair it. Don’t look to other solutions to do that for you permanently.
