An Astonishing Nanotechnology Device That REGROWS Lost Teeth… In Just 4 Months

A dramatic series of recent genetic engineering breakthroughs have already allowed scientists to completely regenerate lost teeth in animals and will be ready for human use within 5 years.

In the meanwhile, however, those who have lost teeth can take-heart that a team of researchers at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada have developed an astonishing non-invasive nanotechnology that will re-grow teeth in less than 4-months.

They filed patents for a tiny wireless ultrasonic device — dubbed LIPUS, for Low-Intensity Pulsed UltraSound — in 2006.

Smaller than a pea, it gently massages gums and stimulates tooth growth when mounted on braces or a temporary plastic crown in a patient’s mouth. It is activated for 20 minutes a day, over a period of 4-months.

The device was designed by Dr. Jie Chen, a nano-biotechnologist at the University’s Engineering Department, and is based on research carried-out by Dr. Tarek El-Bialy, an Egyptian-born orthodontist, in the late 1990s.

In a study, published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Dr. El-Bialy used ultrasound on a rabbit that had undergone surgery on its jaw. He was surprised to find that, as well as re-generating its jaw-bone, the rabbit’s teeth also started to re-grow. He presented similar results for human patients at the World Federation of Orthodontics in Paris in September 2005.

The original ultrasonic devices were very big and, thus, very uncomfortable for patients to hold in their mouth for 20 minutes at a time.

However, when he moved to the University of Alberta, Dr. El-Bialy had a chance-encounter with Dr. Chen, and other members of the engineering faculty, who joined forces with him to radically miniaturise the technology.

According to Dr. Chen, as well as fixing broken teeth, LIPUS may also be used to correct a crooked smile, and may, eventually, allow people to grow taller by stimulating bone growth.

It has been approved by both Canadian and American regulatory bodies and a market-ready model is currently being prepared. LIPUS is expected to be commercially available before the end of 2008.

Does Your Teen Seem Beyond Reason

A lot of parents feel that the most difficult years are the teen years. It may seem that your once sweet child is suddenly possessed. You may be on the receiving end of mood swings, unpredictability, defiance, belligerence and various other types of emotional outbursts.

During this time of turbulence, you may start to wonder if your teen will ever grow up and you find yourself wishing for the years to pass quickly. Occasionally you catch glimpses of the little child they used to be; even less frequently you can catch glimpses of the adult they are becoming. In the mean time, you are faced with this stranger that seems uncomfortable in his or her own skin and thinks the enemy is you.

So what is wrong with your teen? He or she may suddenly seem to not be living in the same reality as you are, like a visitor from another planet. You may find yourself dreading any kind of interaction with your teen.

Typically, parents blame hormones for unpredictable outbursts and unreasonable behavior. The problem with teens is partly, but not totally, caused by hormones.

The other problem is the development of the brain. The development of your teenager’s brain is probably slower than you think.

The largest part of the brain is called the frontal lobe. A small part of the frontal lobe located behind the forehead control’s the brain’s most advanced functions. This is the area that allows us to think in the abstract, imagine consequences, plan and control impulses. The frontal lobe undergoes far more change during the teen years than at any other stage of a person’s life. . It is the last part of the brain to develop. This means your teenager literally cannot reason as well as adults.

While your teen is appearing unreasonable during the adolescent years, below the surface the brain is in the process of changing significantly. There is an intensive overproduction of gray matter, the brain tissue that does the thinking. Then, for a period of time, gray matter is discarded at a rapid rate, while white matter develops. White matter is fatty tissue that serves as insulation. These changes continue into a person’s early twenties. In other words, during the teen years, the brain is not done being built yet. Because of the lack of maturity of the frontal lobe, teenagers rely on emotional parts of the brain instead. They rely on gut feelings, not on intellectually evaluating the consequences of their actions.

Your teenager is in this respect, still a child. The brain does not become mature in the areas that govern judgment and foresight until around age 21 or 22.

So the next time you can’t reason with your teenager, keep in mind their brain isn’t done growing yet. They may not be choosing to be unreasonable - they may simply not be capable of reasoning like an adult.

There are so many advertisements on the radio and television regarding vehicle insurance. Each company claims that they have the lowest rates or that they will beat the rate of the major competitors. It is important to make sure that when you are seeking out an insurance policy that you are comparing coverage that is the same from company to company.

My daughter and her husband went through several companies with price comparisons. They went with a company that offered very low premiums, but when they made car accident claims they found that they had a very high deductible and that they did not have any support services, such as rental cars or towing. Also the car accident claims were dealt with by a contracted worker because the insurance company did not have a local office. This meant that the contracted worker looked at the vehicle and then sent his adjustments to the company. The company then got back to my daughter and son-in-law. The adjuster had missed a few things so the process had to be repeated, which added additional time to getting the car accident claims straightened out.

My daughter and her husband feel that they made bad decisions in choosing their insurance. The low premiums were great, but when they needed the insurance they found that the rates were low because they had given up many things from their old insurance. Many of the companies advertise that they will give you a quote in five minutes; however this quote does not take into consideration your personal driving record. This means that the first quote given to your is not necessarily the amount that your premium will be.

Make sure that you ask for written comparisons of what each insurance covers and also check to make sure that there are local agents that are available to process car accident claims. We have found that when you compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges most of the companies are similarly priced. The low estimates that are given at the time of a comparison quote are stripped down coverage. As you add in coverage and services the premiums go up. When doing comparisons it is important to know what you have, what you need and what the new company is offering for the premium. This will help you avoid surprises when car accident claims are filed. By asking for the comparisons in writing it is easier to look at the cost of coverage and make a more informed decision.

We are born with feelings. Feelings are part of
an evolutionary mechanism which is designed to
protect and help us. They tell us the truth
about our environment. For example, animals are
endowed with feelings of fear as a
survival mechanism against predators.
Feelings of pleasure during acts of procreation
are designed as an evolutionary mechanism to
perpetuate our continued existence. Feelings of
pain are designed to help us avoid unpleasant and
potentially dangerous experiences. Feelings
often tell us deep truths in support of the well being
and continued existence of our inner self.
Little children only have feelings and no beliefs;
these are built up over time either through
external input or their own experiences.
It is often the case that children can be surprisingly
insightful. This is
because children have feelings as the only inner
whispers in the absence of
other belief-driven voices. The ability to listen to such feelings
provides a harmony with the inner self. Being one with our
inner self provides great power, peace and clarity.

While feelings are often a part of the subconscious, beliefs are
thoughts which are present in the conscious mind, and are therefore
inherently “louder voices” than feelings. Beliefs reflect
our prior understandings from either experiences or external input.
Beliefs provide a learning component
to our reactions to feelings and can also affect the
feelings and future courses of action.
Often beliefs can be useful in regulating
feelings and re-enforcing them in a way that our prior
experiences can be effectively leveraged for future use.
For example, consider a situation in which a person has
no prior belief about the safety of spending leisure time in
Central Park in New York City.
If she goes there a few times without any unpleasant incident,
it will become a “belief” for her that Central Park is a safe
place. This will of course regulate her feelings and
desires in the future to go there. On the other hand,
if the person is hit on the back of her head by an unknown
assailant and is subsequently unable to find her purse,
she will develop the “belief” that
Central Park is not a safe place to be. In some cases, a person may be
able to avoid this unpleasant experience with the aid of her feelings, even
if there is no prior belief. For example, if the person
notices furtive behavior of some wanderers in Central
Park, her innermost feelings will express discomfort. In the absence of
prior beliefs, this will tell her that
it is best to leave. Thus, in this case, a person
who listens to their feelings can derive a truth which is useful
to them. In the future, this feeling may become a “belief”.
The important point to understand is that beliefs provide a memory
to our prior experiences and feelings and are a characteristic of
more intelligent forms of life such as humans and some other mammals.
Beliefs which are derived from personal experiences are also
flexible, because a person knows how and when it was derived. For
example, if a person develops the belief that Central Park is a safe place
from experience, and subsequently gets robbed, she will be willing to
change this belief. It is also clear that while beliefs are
created by feelings and experiences, they themselves also affect feelings
and choices, which in themselves may create other beliefs.
Thus, a given belief may also lead to other interconnected
beliefs and feelings– a self-perpetuating mechanism.

Many beliefs are not derived from personal experience
but have always been present from external input in early childhood.
Such beliefs have been trusted by the person to regulate their feelings for
so long, that they may be uncertain of the nature of their feelings
if the belief is removed from their system. This leads to some interesting
situations in terms of connections with one’s inner self. For example, consider a situation
in which a person has the belief since childhood that Central Park is
a sacred place where no robbery can occur. Let us also assume that a lot
of other beliefs of the person are connected to this belief, and the
person derives great emotional well being from these beliefs. Now if this
person notices furtive characters wandering in Central Park,
she may still get the same uncomfortable feeling, but this feeling will be pushed aside
by the louder belief-driven voice about the inherent safety of the place. This is an example
of how feelings can be affected or get cut off by beliefs.
Eventually, when the person does wake up from the blow to
the back of her head, she will be in great
emotional pain and fear.
The pain and fear will come from the uncertainty of
their inner feelings from the potential destruction of a valuable belief.
This belief has regulated the person’s feelings and choices for
so long, that she feels great safety in it. She may be emotionally
invested in the trouble taken in the past to live by the corresponding system of inter-connected
beliefs. In many cases, a person may even have created a reasonably
self-fulfilling world (or inner sanctuary) in the framework of these beliefs, in spite of deep
seated lingering feelings of pain and uncertainty about oneself.
This continues until they are
first faced by a crisis of self-contradictions by an unexpected turn of events.
The potential loss of this false inner sanctuary will create great uncertainty
in the person. In such cases, a person may feel some
form of threat to their emotional well being and survival from the
impending loss of the belief. The longer they have lived in their belief-driven world,
the greater the fear will be. While this fear may seem
irrational to an outsider, it is very real to that person, and should not be lightly
dismissed. At this point, their feelings will again be affected by the
belief-driven fear and will try to find alternative explanations for
the turn of events.
For example, the person may choose to consider the possibility
that the bump on the back of her head was caused by a fallen tree
branch and she may have dropped her purse somewhere.
While this is a plausible explanation, it is not a likely one.
But it is a preferable one, because it does not pose a threat
to the person’s perceived emotional survival. Eventually, this
explanation for the turn of events
will become very real to that person, and the
person will look upon with suspicion
anyone who may try to suggest otherwise.

The point of this article is to illustrate that while belief systems can be helpful
to us, they can also result in loss of clarity in many situations. The loss of clarity
is a result of the disconnect and distortion of feelings, which are only whispers
in the presence of the louder voices driven by beliefs.
The key to clarity is to find a way to re-connect with our innermost feelings
without seeing them through the veneer of our beliefs. This can sometimes be a difficult
and courageous exercise since it requires considerable emotional risk-taking. It
may also result in emotional pain and sorrow especially when we have made terrible
mistakes in the past to live by the beliefs that we thought were good for us.
But tears are only a part of getting better.

You probably read somewhere in a motivational book or heard a self-help guru tell you in his audios or videos that it will really psych you up to make a list of all of your past accomplishments.

While I think this is very useful if you are DEPRESSED, it can backfire, utterly if you’re not.

Why?

If you have a lot of victories to look back on, it’s just too tempting to sit on your laurels, figuring “I’m already in a class by myself,” and then choosing to curl up to contemplate your navel.

The most successful folks, in fact, from my viewpoint, must make themselves mercilessly forward-looking.

Let me give you a few examples.

This is the 1,100th article that I am posting to a certain Ezine site. It marks an accomplishment, and I’m quite proud of it.

But it took me DISPROPORTIONATELY more time to pen the last 100 articles than it did the previous 1,000. How come?

I thought 1,000 articles was a very big deal, and on some levels it is, but the best thing I can do for myself, and for others if they like reading me, is to forget about benchmarks.

Press on!

If I think having earned five college degrees is so unique, so outstanding, and so very rare, how likely am I to undertake even more continuing education, which it was either Plato or Aristotle who remarked, is one good thing a person cannot get too much of?

I need to learn, perhaps more than the next bloke because learning and teaching are my business. Where will my new ideas and new products and services come from if I don’t forget about what I’ve already done and commit to doing still much, much more?

I think you get the point.

Stopping every now and then to smell the roses is perfectly fine.

Just don’t get stuck there, or too stuck on yourself, for that matter!

Fantasy art
mingles with the colors
my palette, my inspiration
my tune, a fairies dream.
Cold and gray
bold and red
midnight meets a sky of lavender
if I choose to paint it so.

I close my eyes and breathe it in.
I am a fantasy artist
I plot and measure my songs.
I seek out inspiration.

I lie on the cool grass
the sky is my blanket
the moon is my compass.
Sometimes it leads me home
sometimes it takes me afar
I land in forests
or un-traveled seas.

I spy a bird in the air
and I become one.
I dream of magic
cloak my breath with requests.
Let me spin around and dance
lift my cares from this earth
plant orchids near my pathway
and line the trail with golden ribbons.

If there is a goddess in me
I will save her from the dragon
or perhaps I will become one.
I am the mystery in my own story.
I am the tailor of my own myth.
I approach the door anyway I please.

Fantasies live in the art of dreaming.
I write it all down
plot out tomorrow what was yesterday
and paint a desert knowing a waterfall.
I draw the surface of pretend
color it with crayons
and put it in an envelope.
I will open my secret in the afternoon
pour tea and eat chocolate and cookies.

I stand at the oceans roar
it tells me to continue dreaming.
I aspire to be the captain of a ship
that sets out to sail toward the Milky Way.
and I hear a spellbinding call,
“Look out to the beyond dear ones
the horizon is just within your grasp.”
I turn to see a mermaid

blushing
as she treasures the illusion
for the message she sang to me.

I am a little girl today
a goddess and woman too.
I do as I please
the sensations are mine
and I alone define them.
Fantasy art
a legend I describe on canvas
or sculpt with clay between my fingers.
It is mine.

Ok, we haunt the camera shops, try out and buy all the latest gadgetry, read all the photo magazines and books. Finally, we load some film into our camera, (or insert a new memory stick) find a suitable subject and start firing away!

We anxiously run down to the photo lab to get our film developed, (or spend a few hours trying to remember how to download our photos into the computer- who can see anything on that tiny screen anyway?). Finally, we see the results.

Our gorgeous model has a tree growing out of her head - on every shot in the ENTIRE session! Or, we never noticed that garbage can off to the side. You know, the one ruining the best shots. Did you notice the cars driving by in the background? How about the bunch of kids walking by?

Yeah, we fell into the trap of focusing all our attention on the model and not looking around at the other elements in the scene. It’s easy to do. And I don’t care who they are, every photographer out there has done the same thing!

There’s so much to think about when constructing a good portrait. Is she (or he) smiling, is the angle of her head appealing, is everything in focus, did we focus on the eyes - and now we have to worry about trees, garbage cans, cars and kids?

Yup. Add one more challenge to the list. It’s not too hard to get in the habit of checking all the way around the edges of the frame - if you make it a habit!

Do whatever it takes to FORCE yourself to consciously slow down and take a second to let your eye scan all the way around the edges of the viewfinder. But that’s not all. Consider those trees or light poles way off in the background, are they going to be blurred out or will they be sharp enough to be a factor in the final print. Can you move and shoot from a different angle?

Is there a street in the backdrop? Take a second to check and see if there is any traffic coming - either auto or pedestrian traffic. If so, can you change the scene to eliminate the problem? Or will you have to wait for a break in the traffic?

I know, it seems obvious, but I wouldn’t have written this article if it weren’t an everyday problem. Take just a few seconds to consider the background and then scan your eye around the frame before snapping the shutter. You will save a lot of money on prints that would have been thrown out.

So global warming, eh? It’s coming and it’s coming fast. Lock up your daughters and put out the cat for that one last night. Global warming, and the end of the earth, is nigh and we are all to blame.

But, hold for one moment. Yes, there are eminent scientists telling us that we are the cause of this global catastrophe and that, whatever we do, it will happen and will devastate the earth and all that live on it.

But there are conflicting views too, and they hold equal import. Some extremely eminent people (scientists no less) have put forward opposing views on the subject of global warming, the greenhouse effect and man’s contribution to it all.

The argument goes something like this: the earth has warmed and cooled several times in its long history. Even before man arrived on the scene there were times that the earth was very hot and other times when it was very cold. The life that was around at that time (the distant relatives of plankton) had no use for cars, televisions or other energy-guzzling accoutrements. They were simple creatures without arms, legs or a brain. Yet the earth still warmed up.

And the fuss about carbon dioxide emissions is all bunkum, according to some clever scientists. It can be argued, for example, that warming causes carbon retention in the atmosphere rather than the other way round. So there. All the fuss is about nothing and, whatever happens to the earth, there is precious little that you, I or anyone else can do about it.

It is an interesting side to the hackneyed argument concerning global warming. My opinion? - well it hardly counts in the grand scheme of things. Yet, man IS now on the earth and man IS contributing to pollution and man IS important for the longevity of the world. So I say, play safe and do something before it is too late.

After I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1997, it was suggested to me that I might benefit from joining a fibromyalgia support group. My first and only experience with a support group was a jaw dropping experience; I realized immediately that this was not the place for me, and that those who were present at this meeting worked very hard at validating each others perceived disabilities.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, the pain of fibromyalgia is real, very real indeed. I’ve had tears pouring down my cheeks, as I struggled to make it from the bed to a scalding hot shower. But ten years later, I have long since recovered, and live a very active and physical life with minimal interference from this neurological quirk.

Researchers have recently discovered something that hints at what I felt intuitionally at that fibromyalgia support group meeting so many years ago.

Dr. Jeffrey Mogil, of the University of McGill has concluded that mice have the ability to show empathy. In their study at the Pain Genetics Lab at McGill University, they discovered that mice that were allowed to see other mice in pain, later tested as being more sensitive to pain than the mice that had not.

Now, this is a breakthrough for researchers studying empathy, simply because even though it has long been suspected to be felt by the higher primates, it had still remained unproven. These findings have other implications as well.

Let me ask you, if you are already in pain, do you want to become even more sensitive to pain? Of course not, right? But that’s exactly what the research is telling us; when you are around others who are in pain, there’s a very good chance that you too, will develop amplified pain signals.

In the numerous one on one session’s I’ve had with people who were suffering from chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia, teaching them leading edge strategies for effectively managing their discomfort, I’ve had the opportunity to ask all of them about their experiences with support groups.

Never, not even once, has someone told me that they had attended a support group meeting where they were told, “Okay, as bad as it may suck right now, the fact is, you are currently suffering from fibromyalgia. While for some of you the pain may be inevitable, you had better understand one thing…the suffering is optional; we will not tolerate complaining and whining about how bad you have it. We will work with one another, sharing things that are making us feel better, knowing that we are all striving for the same goal…to feel better, but that won’t happen if all we do is talk about every ache and pain, and how bad we feel.”

One of my clients even told me that the support group they had belonged to had one major purpose, to push for men and women with fibromyalgia to be able to more easily and quickly get disability benefits. Psychologically, this mind set spells doom and gloom, and a future of suffering.

Think about this for a moment, if my primary thrust is to be able to qualify for disability, then I have already accepted as my reality, that I will be incapacitated by fibromyalgia the rest of my life. I don’t know about you, but that is simply not a belief that I want to settle down with.

Fair or not, I have always been extremely reluctant to work with anyone as a client who was receiving disability benefits. This almost always creates a very tricky situation, one that can be difficult at best to overcome. What you have, is someone who is in pain, and has a good portion of their bills paid each month by the disability payments. You’re saying to them, “I can help you get back to the point where you have to work again, and pay your bills with the money you earn after a 40 hour work week.” As you might have guessed, most people dig their heels in deep when it comes to giving up free money, even if it means they might be pain free.

My advice is always the same; find out for yourself. If you’ve been thinking about a support group, then by all means go, and perhaps you’ll be fortunate enough to find a different group than most. If so, I’d love to hear about how the meetings are orchestrated. If however, you find that you’ve stepped into a den of pathetic complaining people, with no sense of direction or outcomes for their future, then run or walk as fast as you can, and know that feeling better is almost certainly a possibility.

Therapist and Author Paul Watzlawick once said, “The person that commits suicide arrives at the conclusion that what he is seeking does not exist; the seeker concludes that what he has not yet looked in the right place.”

Know in your heart that the wisdom of Watzlawick is your truth, things can get better, no matter what you are facing in life. Stay away from those who only complain and talk about how bad things are, and what they can’t do. Even if you currently struggle just to make it through each day, and are dealing with unthinkable tragedies in your life, seek out those who look to the future; find those that are there for you, but that who refuse to condone your acceptance of misery as a way of life.

Unity Candles have come to signify, in many ceremonies and religions, as the culmination of two families. Generally, unity candles are made up of three individual candles. The first two are tapers, which signify the bride and the groom. Each lights their respective taper candle, then combine the two at once to light the third pillar candle, which is joining the unity of the two becoming one.

The unity candles come in a variety of different designs and colors. Many will come with special phrases, words, or engravings that hold a special meaning for the couple. After the lighting of the unity candles, the bride and groom will typically place them in their home as a reminder of their special day, their love, and their commitment. These can be designed with a special poem, the name of the bride and groom, the date, time, and location of the wedding, or any wording desired.

You have many choices when it comes to unity candles. For example, you can find unity candles that come in smokeless and dripless wax. This is a choice for many couples, as it allows the candle to remain intact, little cleanup, and a great ornamental piece for their home.

Engraved oil unity candles are also becoming very popular. The oil is usually contained within glass and provides for easy lighting and there is very little clean up or smoke involved.

For those looking to add some unique touches to their wedding, sand instead of flames might be a great choice. Instead of lighting candles, the couple would mix two different colors of sand into one vial, which stands for mixing their lives together.

When it comes to unity candles, the best thing to do is look for sets. Buying the unity candles in a set allows you to ensure that you have everything you need, as well as matching pieces. In sets, the unity candles will include candle stands, one pillar candle, and two tapers.

For a real personalized and unique addition to your wedding, consider designing and creating your own unity candles. There are many resources on the internet and in bookstores that can guide you in creating your own candles for your special day.
