Photo Montage (or Slideshow) Tips and Ideas

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got old photos in boxes, scattered pictures in various scrapbooks or albums, a computer hard drive with photos saved in places you don’t even remember, maybe even some undeveloped film (who knows what could be on there!). If you’re looking for something to do with all of it, why not make a photo slideshow on DVD replete with music and specials effects? It is a great way to keep a permanent record of all those photos as DVDs can last up to 100 years. There are plenty of companies that will perform that service for you (including the author’s) or you can do it yourself. If you want to do it yourself, here are some ideas to help you out.

Know Your Audience

The most important aspect in creating any photo montage is in knowing your audience. Ultimately, what you are doing with your montage is telling a story. To tell it effectively, you have to know who you are telling it to. The audience will play a large part in how many pictures you want to include, the type of music you want, and the length of the presentation. Here are a few specific ideas:

*-If you plan on showing your montage to a larger audience (like a birthday, wedding reception/rehearsal dinner, or anniversary party) make sure you consider how you are going to present it. Is your slideshow going to be a backdrop for the party or is there going to be a time to sit down where everyone will gather to watch? If it is a backdrop, you probably want to use more pictures. That way, people can watch parts as they please, mingle, and then come back to watch different parts as the party moves on. If your montage is going to be displayed with the expectation that most people will stop what they are doing to watch, keep your presentation limited to about 4 songs (about 125 to 175 photos). This is a good length to create some nice emotions yet short enough that it will not interrupt the event.

*-If you plan on showing your slideshow to a small and intimate audience, the best bet is to make it short and sweet. One to two personal songs with about 75 photographs makes a great surprise gift.

The Importance Of Order

There are a variety of approaches you can take in ordering your photographs (thematically, chronologically, etc). What usually has the best flow is a chronological order. Chronological order allows you to encapsulate all facets of a person’s life in a way that everyone will understand. It also creates a great nostalgia effect early on which will grab your audience’s attention right away.

Music

Generically speaking, songs with lyrics are best. Since the majority of your DVD will be pictures, having lyrics really helps to attach the photos to the music. If a particular lyric matches up to what is going on in a particular photo that is even better.

As to musical genre, that is a matter of personal taste. From experience, though, a mix is usually the most powerful. If you are making an upbeat, light-hearted presentation, then matching music is appropriate. If you are looking for something engaging and emotional, then think of your presentation like it is a great movie. You want a lighter side, a dramatic part, and a great ending. Depending on the number of photos you have, probably one or two up-tempo songs, one or two slower songs, and then the homerun song for the end.

When picking specific songs, it is a good idea to think beyond the more common popular songs. What is the person’s favorite song? How about a song from their childhood? Maybe one version of a song works better than another (like acoustic versus electric)? There is an amazing amount of music available online; it is a good idea to explore. You will know when you see it in your presentation if it really fits.

Photo Quality

A big issue related to creating a photo montage is photo editing. There is plenty of software that can clean up cracks, fix lighting, adjust color, remove spots, etc.; some works better than others (check out www.cnet.com for product reviews). The one problem no software can fix, though, is a grainy photo. Unfortunately, an out-of-focus photograph is going to remain an out-of-focus picture in your slideshow. When you are selecting the photos are going to include, you should choose the clearest ones you have. Keep in mind that your slideshow may have lots of transitions, backgrounds, pan and zooms, etc. so you want photos with a focal point that is as clean as possible. Clean photos help keep the flow of the presentation.

Video

A good way to add some flair to your montage is to add video. If you can find and isolate some good video clips, they add a great touch. If you do decide to add video, don’t make the clips too long. Remember, you have a story to tell and need to keep it moving. Keep the clip down to about thirty seconds and consider using video as a break point between “chapters” or songs.

Narrate It

Another great touch is to use personal voice recordings in your slideshow. If your presentation is a gift, hearing your voice makes it that much more personal (and memorable). Voice recording can be done on most home computers. Turn on the microphone and go for it!

Quotes and Poems

If you are really looking to create an emotional montage, use photo captions. They can be personal quotes, famous quotes, short poems, etc. Whatever your preference, a good quote can help to convey the true meaning behind a certain photo or draw out deep emotions.

Personalize It

What makes any gift special? The thought of course — especially the thought that comes from you. Since that is the case, some piece of personalization, however small, is critical. Think of it as your signature on a painting. Whether it is a song, a caption, or even a certain photo make sure to make it your own.

The End

Sometimes one of the best parts of a movie is the highlight reel at the end (think “Build Me Up, Buttercup” at the end of There’s Something About Mary). If you can come up with your own “bloopers reel,” it would be an excellent finishing touch to your slideshow.

Back-Up Plan

Once all of your pictures have been scanned, catalogued, and you are ready to start on your montage, don’t forget to create a file with just your originals in case you need to go back to them for some reason. It is a good idea to also create a separate folder with your edited photos. That way you have copies of both for a “Doomsday scenario.” This also provides you a way to preserve all your print photos which can degrade over time (cracking, turning yellow, etc).

Hopefully, these ideas are helpful to you. Creating a photo slideshow is a lot of work but it always turns out to be worth it in the end.

Keeping fish offers a low maintenance pet and a decorative living feature. Unlike many animals that will shed their hair, a home aquarium will enhance your living space with its presence.

Adults and children can both appreciate a home aquarium. The calming effect of bubbling water is pleasing to the ear. Bright tropical fish stimulate the eye. Children can learn responsibility and the other lessons that a pet teaches.

Those who find pleasure in this hobby often find themselves buying one -aquarium after another until they run out of space. If you have never kept fish before it may be difficult to understand why people enjoy them so much.

If you are looking to buy an aquarium there has never been a better time. Fish tank designs for today’s modern homes are more decorative than the iron framed versions from the past. The shapes can range from flat panels that are wall mounted to centerpiece coffee tables that house fish in the base.

The best thing is that aquariums do not have to be expensive. There is a fish tank priced to suit any budget. A cheap aquarium can be found which will do the job of the more decorative models.

To equip the tank for best performance you will also need to select some aquarium products. When making your selections match equipment with the aquarium you selected. More powerful filters and heaters will be required for higher volume models.

When it comes to selecting the fish remember to choose specimens that will all live happily together. Matching fish with similar diets and water requirements simplifies many aspects of the process.

Following these principles will let you experience the joys of owning an aquarium for yourself. Before long you too will be enjoying the pleasures that fish offer.

Andrew Fuller writes for e-Aquarium on topics such as buying aquarium products and the many aquarium designs you can choose from.

Seeing you change has got the better of me
You are not the same person you used to be
You turn your nose up with a downward frown
Just to let me know you do not want me around
It is such a heartache to know
You only wanted me when you were down and low

Sharing your love was a wonder to behold
The most beautiful story to ever be told
Now when you see me you turn your head
Forcing back my hellos for tears instead
The joys we shared we will never have again
You have climbed up the latter from whence you came
Cruel and heartless are some of the ones who succeed
They come from a roofless and selfish breed

I hope the time never comes when the day you shall fall
I applauded you for your success, accomplishments and all
Now that I have continued my own life to live
I’ve given to you everything my heart can give.

For myself I am happy but for you I am sad
Good never comes from that that turns bad
Do not let your life become the proving ground
For people who succeed and tumble back down
Life can come full circle for which there seems to
be no ends
Always remember never to turn your back on your friends
You can take this to heart or be like a circus clown
It is a lot harder to get up than it is to fall down
For when you find yourself reaching for the ones who care
Take care for you may find that nobody is there

Heed the moral of the story for this is true
The people you shun may do the same to you

The idea of Web Design has changed quite a bit in recent years. In the early days of the Internet, everyone was playing around with web design. A person with a bit of knowledge of HTML codes could put together a nice looking website in a couple of nights work. In some ways that has not changed. It still is easy to make your own website, and millions of people are doing it. However, the wide spread use of the Internet for commercial purposes has created a demand for something that goes beyond just the simple construction of an attractive site.

If your site is intended to generate business, then it must have traffic. In what is called the brick and mortar businesses, traffic is important. If you have a store located on a back street out of sight, you have to find other ways to let people know it is there in order to generate customers. A website that no one can find is like a store building on a back street. No one will see it, and it will get no traffic.

The way that a site becomes seen is by coming up high on search engines. This is the essential element in proper design. The methods that enable a site to have a high search engine ranking are known as SEO. This is search engine optimization. The techniques of search engine optimization are not the kind of things that amateur web designers can master quite as easily as they could create a simple site. They include such things as link building. Link building is the placement of links on other sites that point users back to your site. The number and quality of the links that do point back to your site is one of the most important criteria used by search engines to rank your site.

It has to be understood that even when your site is intended to be specific, it must still have search engine optimization. For example, if your site is a Utah based mortgage company, it is still going to rank high on a search engine when that is the criteria entered on the search. Utah web design or mortgage web design must consider SEO-friendly principles in order to rank high even on such specific searches. The most important fact in the generation of high traffic levels is that people will tend to visit the highest ranked sites that come up on a search engine list. If you want to generate traffic to your site and your business, you must give consideration to SEO principles in the web design.

Natalie Aranda writes about the Internet. It has to be understood that even when your site is intended to be specific, it must still have search engine optimization. For example, if your site is a Utah based mortgage company, it is still going to rank high on a search engine when that is the criteria entered on the search. Utah web design, web development or mortgage website design must consider SEO-friendly principles in order to rank high even on such specific searches.

As I’ve traveled around the country over the past several years working with companies and their salespeople, I’ve been amazed to find that they do not know, and cannot articulate, their competitive advantage! How can companies and their salespeople expect prospects and customers to give their time and attention if they do not understand, clearly and concisely, what that company can do for them that no one else can do? That’s what I call selling in the pit.

Companies and salespeople who don’t understand their competitive advantage are all in a deep pit saying things like, “Our product is better quality,” or, “Our service is better,” or, “I’m my company’s competitive advantage.” Even if the salesperson is the company’s competitive advantage, they won’t convince their customers just by saying so because many of their competitors will be saying the exact same thing! That’s selling in the pit! To get out of the pit, salespeople have to define quality. They have to show the prospect what outstanding service looks like and how their service differs from the competition.

In a moment, I’ll show you how to determine your competitive advantage, but first let’s talk about how you can demonstrate your competitive advantage from the very first moment you are introduced. Suppose someone walks up to you at a business conference, introduces herself, and asks you what you do for a living. Exactly what would you say?

Did you have any trouble? Did you stumble? Do you know what sets you apart from your competitors? If this was hard for you, you’re not alone. If you were to ask the average car, computer, or caviar salesperson what they do for a living, they’ll probably say, “I sell cars, computers, or caviar.” But what does every other car, computer, or caviar salesperson say? Exactly the same thing!

So what should salespeople who understand their competitive advantage say? How about this for the car salesperson? “My name is Mike and I work with Competitive Motors. I’ve found that there is a lot of confusion in the automotive market today because there have been over 150 new models introduced in just the past three years. I’ve developed a computer book that profiles everything the buyer wants in a car and, in less than five minutes, identifies the models most likely to fit their needs.”

Your Statement of Competitive Advantage

Mike has given his prospect a statement of competitive advantage. It has four components:

-Your name
-Your company
-A statement about a problem in your market
-How you and your product solve that problem

The statement of competitive advantage is a maximum 30-second statement of what differentiates you in the marketplace.

Here’s another example. “My name is Marlene and I work with a company called ‘The Prescription for Doctors.’ Physicians today are being pressured by insurers, employers, and patients to cut health care costs. Yet overhead costs for physicians are constantly rising. We provide a service that allows the physician to spend more time with patients and cut overhead costs at the same time, resulting in better quality care at a lower cost. It’s just what the doctor ordered!”

Here’s one last example. “My name is Beth. It’s nice to meet you. I’m with a company called ‘The Greatest Advertising Agency in the World.’ I’ve discovered that almost every successful product has either been the first entry in its category or it has been able to create a new category in the mind of its customers. What we do is help companies who are launching new products or having trouble with old ones ensure that their product is positioned to win!”

That really does set you apart from the competition. And it makes you sound like a polished expert right from the start. But how do you determine exactly what your competitive advantage is? The best way to determine your competitive advantage is to break down the components of your product or service into four distinct categories: competitive uniqueness, competitive advantages, competitive parities, and competitive disadvantages. Let’s look at each one individually.

Competitive uniqueness: “What can I do for my customers that no one else can do? What can I offer that no one else can offer?”

Competitive advantages: “What can I do for my customer that my competitor can also do, but I can do it better and I can prove it?”

Competitive parity: “Objectively speaking, my competitors and I are the same here-no real differentiation.”

Competitive disadvantages: When you honestly answer the question: “Where does the competition have an advantage over me?”

You may want to do your analysis by market segment, by competitor, by product, or include all of them, but knowing your competitive position will quickly get you out of the pit and on your customer’s wavelength.

An example of competitive uniqueness exists if a pharmaceutical company receives FDA approval to sell a new drug. Since no one else has the drug, this company now has a competitive uniqueness with this drug.

An example of a competitive advantage might be where two companies market the same drug, but one is a large well-known company and the other is a small relatively unknown company. Even though both are selling essentially the same product, the larger company has an advantage because it’s well known and people ask for the drug by its company name because of its wide name recognition. If no real competitive advantage exists in your product, try to focus on your company reputation, your excellent service, your responsiveness, and reliability or any other factors than can positively differentiate you from your competition.

Next let’s look at competitive parity-what things are the same between the competition and us? That is, what do you have that is exactly like what the competition has but is still important to the customer? Birth control pills are a good example. Several ethical drug companies make different formulations, but all with similar records for preventing pregnancy. This is competitive parity.

And finally, competitive disadvantages-what specific disadvantages do your product or service possess? That is, what does the competition do better than you do? Your drug may have more side effects than the competitor’s. That’s a competitive disadvantage.

In the examples I’ve just given, we were talking about the whole product as being unique or the same. But what do you do if you have a product where some features may be unique, some may be advantages, some may be the same, and some may be disadvantages?

Say, for example, that you are selling a fax machine that uses plain paper-that’s parity, because others do too. But maybe yours is the only one that will interface with phone, computer, or car telephone-that’s uniqueness. Yours also has the highest resolution available, that’s an advantage, 300-number memory, another advantage, but it will not do broadcasting and polling, that’s a disadvantage.

Here’s an example in a service business. Federal Express™ will get a package delivered overnight, but so will other companies. That’s parity. But FedEx has a provable better track record, an advantage, and they can tell you in real time, exactly where your package is, that’s a uniqueness (Of course, in the rapidly changing world of service businesses, some of these benefits may have changed from advantage to parity, or vice versa, by the time you read this).

I can’t stress enough the importance of doing this analysis and knowing your competitive advantage. By doing this analysis you’ll be in a position to help your customers distinguish between you and your competition. Once they see your uniqueness and advantages, it will be easier for them to make a decision in your favor. In order to discover your competitive advantage, you may have to do some intelligence gathering:

-talk to your customers
-talk to other salespeople
-watch the local newspapers
-attend tradeshows
-talk to your customers’ suppliers
-build a file of your competitor’s marketing and product information
-do a debriefing when you lose a customer to a competitor
-use a clipping service to gather information on competitors or on major prospects
-obtain annual and quarterly reports of your competitors and prospective customers
-watch the market trends in your industry and in your customers’ industries
-become the expert on your product or service and how it can help your customers

Avoiding Price Focus

How many times have you been in a selling situation where the customer’s sole focus was on price? Anytime your customers can’t tell the difference between your product or service and your competitor’s, they will buy on price. You must differentiate your company, your product, your quality, your service, and yourself if you want the customer to stop focusing on price and start seeing you as a partner and not just as a supplier. You’ve got to show customers how you are different.

I’m sure you can see now why it’s so important to know what you have to offer that’s unique or different. But you may be wondering what you’ll do with that information once you have it. How will you get the information across to the customer?

You’re going to use this information in every step of the sale. Your entire sales effort will be built around your competitive strengths. When you are targeting your market, you’ll be looking for those clients whose needs are most likely to match your uniqueness and advantages. When you contact clients, you’ll open the conversation by letting them know what you can do for them that no one else can do. During the information-gathering phase, you’ll be asking questions that will uncover customer needs in the areas where you have uniqueness and advantages. When you are collaborating with your customer on options and solutions, you’ll keep your customer focused on your uniqueness and advantages and show your customers how they match their needs. During the commitment phase, you’ll be summarizing all of the competitive advantages that your product has to offer, and during the assuring satisfaction phase, you’ll be measuring how well your uniqueness and advantages are serving your customer.

Let’s summarize the two powerful strategies I’ve talked about that will give you The Competitive Advantage. First, know your competitive advantages and uniqueness, and second, be able to articulate them clearly to your prospective customers in thirty seconds or less. This is your powerful opening to your targeted prospects-that all-important first impression that sets you apart from your competition and clearly establishes your competitive advantage in the eyes of your customers.

When I was younger in age, about 10-13, I started having very troublesome nightmares. Even though I was a very normal kid, with a very normal family, each night I would be terrified to go to bed from fear. I would have vivid dreams of horrifying events such as my house burning down, with Satan himself looking into my room, laughing. Most of these nightmares had Satan in them, and I often woke up not knowing what to do, or what caused these nightmares.

After a while, I started noticing something very peculiar. Every morning, I was waking up at exactly 3 A.M.; not one minute more, not one minute less. Every morning, nightmare or not, I was beginning to awaken, and see the big red LED’s glowing on my alarm clock telling me again, I had awoken at the same time. This in itself was very frightening, but I had always managed to get back to sleep. After around a week of noticing this, some very peculiar events began to happen.

One particular morning, I woke up with no nightmare at the prompt time of 3 A.M. I was trying to go back to sleep, when I heard some odd noises. I heard what sounded like a side door in my kitchen, 3 rooms away from me, slam shut. I thought this was very odd, as everyone in my house was asleep. My heartbeat quickened instantly, and sleep seemed very distant to me. I waited, trying to block out anything I might hear, and hid my head under the covers. A few minutes passed, and I heard a stranger sound- something that of dropping a penny on a metal surface. Again, this sound radiated from my kitchen. I closed my eyes, and tried to calm myself down so I could get to sleep and forget what was happening. Seconds later, I felt my feet getting extremely cold, and tucked them underneath my covers. The cold spread to my body- and I was frozen with fear. Two rooms away from mine, my living room, I heard the sliding of a chair on a tile surface. I found this very odd, as we have a carpeted living room.

Things were starting to get more active, and I was frozen with fear still. At the climax of things, I heard 5 loud stomps coming into the hallway outside of my room, and stopped right outside my door. My heart was beating almost outside of my chest, as I curled up into a ball and prayed that the experience stop. I couldn’t sleep that morning, and waited two hours until my father got up to go to work. At this point, I felt comfortable enough to sleep, and did.

Since this incident, I have gotten increasingly better about nightmares. The following days, I still woke up at 3 A.M. in the morning for another week or so. Every now and then, I will still experience minor oddities. Recently, I was brushing my teeth and the bathroom door close shut all by itself. Things like this have made me believe in ghosts- even if I never caught a glimpse. In many cases hearing is believing- just as much as sight.

To this day, if I wake up in the early morning, I sometimes will turn the television on to keep my mind off of this particular incident, and sleep with it on. I’m not fond of repeating this occurrence to anyone, as it invokes old memories I wish to forget. I hope this is a bit of proof to the non believers that there is, in fact, something paranormal out there.

Human activities, without doubt, are the cause of global warming; and we are responsible for stopping global warming, especially because it is a possible thing to do. Stopping global warming is not only a possible thing to do, but it is a mandatory thing that every single individual in the world should participate in. We are facing a global problem, which means that there are a lot of us who need to be educated on the issue of global warming in order to make the changes necessary in order to reverse the problem at hand. What exactly do we mean when we state that human activities are the cause of global warming? How is it that our activities have such a big impact on the recent, not to mention terrifying, climate change? All of these questions, and many more, will be explained to you. What if the children that are born today suffer tomorrow because of our actions? Our kids would wish we had made better decisions in order to create a better future for them. Our actions today have an effect on the future of our children tomorrow, and we are the only ones who have the power to make a change. We have a serious problem on our hands; it is called Global Warming. Global warming is hitting the world by storm, literally. Once its effects are felt, there is no way to stop them; the only thing we can do is stop the future effects of global warming from occurring. Every single human being on the face of this earth is in some way responsible for some fraction of the causes of global warming. The same way, every single human being should do something immediately to help stop this disaster which has already gone out of control.

To understand our climate crisis, it is important to know what greenhouse gases are and how they naturally function in our atmosphere. Greenhouse gases consist of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s), methane, nitrous oxide, and the most important of them all, carbon dioxide (CO2). Greenhouse gases permit light that is emitted from the sun to enter the atmosphere; however they also lock in some infrared radiation which warms up the air in the atmosphere. These are all natural gasses, and this is a natural process which is called the greenhouse effect. The natural amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere work to help the Earth’s surface maintain an average temperature of about 59 degrees Fahrenheit. This natural amount of heat that is trapped in our atmosphere allows us to breathe clean air, have clean water, and have normal weather. We will focus mainly on CO2 emissions since they account for about 80% of all greenhouse emissions. Out of all of the greenhouse gasses, humans create more CO2. Our climate crisis stems from excess CO2, which is the byproduct of human activity being released into our atmosphere. Excess emissions of CO2, as well as other greenhouse gasses, act as a blanket and trap heat in out atmosphere, thus creating global warming which is the reason for our unimaginable climate change. According to The Stop Global Warming campaign, “More carbon dioxide is now in the atmosphere than has been in the past 650,000 years.” (”Stop Global Warming Virtual March.”)

Global warming has altered the state of our climate in unimaginable ways, thus causing glaciers to melt, temperatures all over the world to raise, weather to become catastrophic, endangering species, and causing sea levels all over the world to rise. Since 1912 the ice cap of Mount Kilimanjaro has decreased by 75%. If they continue to melt at the present rate, all of the glaciers in Glacier National Park could be gone by the year 2070. In 1972 the mountain tops in Venezuela contained six glaciers; all but two of the glaciers have melted. Temperatures over the recent years have risen to dramatic highs in places that never experienced such temperatures for such long periods of time. In the summer of 1998, a massive 29 day heat wave struck Dallas Texas with temperatures of 100 degrees F. That same year in May, India suffered a massive heat wave which claimed over 2,500 lives. In the spring, the beautiful cherry blossoms planted along the streets of Washington DC bloom about 7 days before their blooming period compared to when they bloomed in 1970. The weather all over the world has intensified and changed for the worse. In March of 1997, floods swept along the Ohio River killing 30 people and causing property damage totaling over $500 million. Hurricane Floyd hit the Atlantic coast in September of 1999 with winds up to 130-m.p.h. causing floods which left thousands of people homeless, and killed 77 people. Fires raged all over the world due to extended droughts and heat waves. Fires tore through Samos Island in Greece and burned away about 20% of the area. Rising sea levels- another very serious effect of global warming, are threatening millions of people all over the world to move. If the ice continues to melt, and the oceans continue to rise, over 40 million people in Shanghai, and over 20 million people in and around Beijing would have to be evacuated.

In 1870 the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was built 1,500 feet from the shoreline. There was no choice left but to move the light house when the ocean came to about 160 feet of it around the late 1980’s. Global Warming is also threatening species to extinction and hurting nature to the point where it is just sad. Between the years 1997 and 1998, salmon populations from the Pacific dramatically fell down in number as a result of rising ocean temperatures by 6 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice melting every year in the spring is said to have had an impact on the number of polar bear cubs being born in Hudson Bay. Never in the past has it been an issue that a large number of polar bears are drowning. These innocent creatures are forced to swim for miles in search of land; their land which has melted away, never to be seen again. Polar bears are now facing extinction because so many of them have died already, and more will continue to die off rapidly if the ice doesn’t stop melting. A great number of other creatures are also facing extinction due to climate change, and also due to direct human interaction with the places these creatures live; but that is a whole different story. Beautiful Coral reefs that decorate our oceans are losing algae and are thus being destroyed because of an increase in ocean temperatures. Algae feed the beautiful corals and help them retain their amazing colors and forms. Unfortunately, due to the rise in ocean temperatures, these beautiful coral formations are being destroyed. Animals are relocating and migrating, confused because of the change of climate, not knowing what to call home. (”The Effects of Global Warming.”)

In her article, Barbara K. Kennedy quotes Eric Post, who is an assistant professor of biology at Penn State University. Post writes: “All the major biomes on Earth have been affected by a temperature increase of just a little more than half a degree Celsius-most of which has occurred during the last two decades.” (Kennedy 1-2). This is very scary to think about, especially when it is said that temperatures will rise even more over the next 50 years. Imagine the impact that the rise of temperature will have on us on top of the effects that we have already experienced. The impact would be unimaginable.

In our technologically advanced world, we have so many different ways of emitting CO2 into the atmosphere. Some of the many ways CO2 can be emitted into the atmosphere is from power plants, cars, trucks, airplanes, buildings, and through deforestation. In order for us to generate electric we burn fossil fuels, which helps emit tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. In fact, around 40% of the CO2 emissions in the U.S. in the year 2002 come from us burning fossil fuels. Cars like minivans, sports cars, trucks, and jeeps, release about 20% of the CO2 emissions in the U.S. Businesses that use trucks for their work help to create the 13% of CO2 emissions from trucks. According to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, currently airplanes are responsible for about 3.5% of the global warming issue. By the year 2050, this percentage can rise by 15%. The way that most buildings are made helps to emit 12% of the CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. There are so many other ways that CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere. It is obvious that the most CO2 emissions stem from human services, products, and activities. For this reason, we are responsible to clean up our act and to find alternative ways to go about our every day life (”Causes of Global Warming.”). On the flip side, our growing technology has helped by allowing scientists to collect data from the past and measure the amount of CO2 in a given year by using devices know as core drills. The data that was taken from these experiments are confirmation to the question of “Does human activity cause global warming by increasing the amounts of CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere”?

We also have the power and technology to reverse the problem of global warming and stop it from destroying our earth and the species that live on it. How do we know that CO2 levels have actually risen, and that they are in fact contributing to warmer temperatures? This question can easily be answered by digging deep into the experiments which scientists have conducted; or should I say by digging deep into ice. Scientists have used core drills; devices that dig deep into glaciers and extract ice which has formed over the years, in order to measure the amount of CO2 that was in the atmosphere in a given year. Through this process, scientists were able to compare the ratios of isotopes of oxygen in order to uncover the temperature of a given year over the past 1,000 years. They made this comparison by examining the horizontal lines on a chunk of ice, which was removed from a glacier, and by marking each of those lines as one year. Using this extraordinary and accurate method, they are able to compare the amount of CO2 in a given year to the temperature of that year. Remarkably, scientists were able to collect enough data from these experiments to prove that the more CO2 there is in the atmosphere, the hotter the earth will become. The results were amazing because they were actually able to confirm that the more CO2 there is in the atmosphere, the higher the temperature of the earth will get, thus altering our climate (Gore 60-65).

While those who truly care about our world are trying to help put a halt to global warming, global warming skeptics are denying that we have a real problem on our hands. Global warming skeptics argue that scientists are relying too much on computer models, which they believe to be inaccurate. A global warming skeptic William Kininmonth states “I do not believe this research team made a compelling case to suggest that their computer models are sufficiently realistic.” (Black 2). The skeptics believe that too much attention is focused on computer models, and not enough real evidence is given. This is where they are wrong because there are endless amounts of data out there that support the fact that global warming is a problem, people just have to open their eyes and do their homework. Scientists from all over the world, in fact, have reached a consensus that we have a real problem on our hands, and that we must do something about it. It is true that CO2 is naturally emitted into the atmosphere from different sources, and it is also true that even if human beings were not living on Earth, over 95% of the CO2 emissions would still be emitted into the atmosphere. Naturally, about 220 billion tons of CO2 per year is emitted from dead trees and other materials decaying in forests.

However, natural sinks, which are biological and physical processes in nature, help to balance things out by helping remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Nevertheless, the natural CO2 emissions that occur in nature would not cause such a problem and change our climate. What causes the problem is excess CO2 emissions that humans cause which then disturbs the natural balance created by natural sinks. For every issue you put to the table, there will always be someone out there who opposes your views on that issue. That is why you must do your own research in order to find out what is truly the right thing to do. You must be the judge of things as you see it from your own eyes; as long as you promise to look at all of the evidence that is given to you, and as long as you are open and willing to listen to all sides of the story. (”How Do We Know that the Atmospheric Build-up of Greenhouse Gases Is Due to Human Activity?”).

Whether you do or don’t believe that humans are the cause of global warming, or that global warming is even a problem at all, you don’t have the right to trash this beautiful earth that we share with other human beings and creatures. We all have the responsibility to lower our carbon footprint by making alternative choices in our everyday lives. Scientific research has proven that humans are to blame for the cause of global warming, and I believe that if we all accept this fact, we will be one more step closer to solving the problem. It is not easy to solve the issue of global warming, mainly because it is a global problem, but as long as we believe that it is a solvable problem, we will accept alternatives to our every day activities. Some of the things, out of many, that we as individuals can do is change our light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs, recycle, adjust our thermostat, drive a hybrid car, walk or bike instead of driving, change our air conditioner’s filter regularly, and buy products locally.

These are only some of the things that we can do to help stop global warming. However, the most important things that you can do to help stop global warming is to get more educated on this issue. If you want to learn how to help, just get involved with the right people, do the right research, and simply get educated on this issue. If we sit around and wait for things to happen themselves, nothing will ever change for the better. We will just procrastinate and make the problem even bigger than it already was. Wherever you stand on the issue of global warming, you still have the responsibility to take care of the beautiful Earth and its natural resources that are taken for granted by so many.

You are a creative person, and you would like to make a congratulatory wedding gift basket for a couple that is getting married soon. However, you want to be sure that you include things in the congratulatory wedding gift basket that they will definitely like. Hence, you need some congratulatory wedding gift basket ideas.

There are many different kinds of congratulatory wedding gift baskets to choose from if you decide not to make one yourself. The available congratulatory wedding gift baskets range in sizes from small to large. Those congratulatory wedding gift baskets also come in several different genres, from humorous to informal to very formal.

However if you are creative, it is probably a better idea to make the congratulatory wedding gift basket yourself, because this way you can put whatever you like in the basket and make it more personalized. What you put in the basket depends on what the couple likes.

For example, say the husband likes golf. An idea for what to put in the gift basket is a gift certificate for golf lessons. Alternatively, if you choose to purchase something less expensive, consider getting something golf-themed that the husband can place on his desk at work.

As for the wife, women always appreciate a way to relax. In the congratulatory wedding gift basket, include a gift certificate for a day of beauty at a spa. In lieu, you can do separate gift certificates for certain things. For example, you can include a gift certificate to her hair salon, or a gift certificate to get a manicure or pedicure.

While you can include separate things in the congratulatory wedding gift basket for each of them, you should also include something in the gift basket that both of them can share. This, of course, should be something romantic. One idea is to get a bottle of champagne and personalized champagne glasses.

Something that many couples like to do is go to a show as sort of a date night. If you know that the couple likes doing things like this, consider getting them tickets to a theater performance or a comedy show.

For more ideas on what to put in the congratulatory wedding gift basket, ask the family and friends of the couple. The possibilities are endless with congratulatory wedding gift baskets because you can include many different items that the couple can enjoy long after their wedding.

Jerry Rice was born on October 13, 1962 in Crawford, Mississippi. Although Rice never had the physical abilities of some other great athletes, he always had the work ethic and determination to get the job done. For this reason, Rice is widely regarded as the best wide receivers to ever play the game. And many people feel that he is the greatest football player of all time regardless of position.
In high school Rice played on the defensive side of the football, and was good enough to make the All State team. But although he accomplished a lot in high school, no NCAA Division I football programs offered him a scholarship.

With no other options, Rice decided to attend Mississippi Valley State University, an NCAA Division I-AA program. In 1983 Rice had a great season, and set many records along the way. He had 102 receptions, 1,450 yards, and was named to several All American teams. He followed this up with an equally good season as a senior in 1984. All of his college football accomplishments led him to being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in August of 2006.

Rice was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers with the 16th pick of the first round in the 1985 NFL Draft. Although Rice struggled with drops during his first year in the NFL, he turned some heads. He finished the season with 927 yards on 49 catches. And ever since that first season Rice was off and running. At the time of his retirement he held many NFL records including receptions, receiving yards, touchdown receptions, touchdowns, all purpose yards, and many more.

It is safe to say that Jerry Rice is the best wide receiver to ever play the game of football. In addition to his great football skills he had the heart of a champion, and the work ethic to match.

The final decision is based on what factors?

Is there an agreement on what is important or what is of value?

Have evaluation criteria been defined?

People

Who will be involved or influence the final decision?

This can be one or different individuals.

Is there an individual (or individuals) that understands the value of your product or service, but has not found a good fit yet?

Have all the key stakeholders been identified and contacted?

Are you speaking with the correct contact, which, assuming you have the right solution, has the authority to buy?

Do you know how much authority Mr. Prospect has before further approvals are required?

Who are the decision-makers, evaluators, influencers, and end users of your potential solution?

Organizational Chart

Products and services

What types of products and services are currently in use?

If Mr. Prospect had a wish list and could have or change anything he wanted with their current or a potential supplier, what would be on the list?

Locations

Next Steps

After summarizing your conversation, follow up with a next step question such as:

“What’s next?” or “What’s the next step?”

“Where do we go from here?”

“If we had a solution that would help you do a better job than your current solution what is the process you go through to look at new solutions?”

“What do we need to do to move forward on this?”

What actions need to be taken by you and the prospect to get them to evaluate your solution?

Have you set up a Sales M.A.P. (Mutually Agreed upon Process(tm))?

What day and time do these actions need to be completed by?

What is the time-line or what are the milestones for moving the sale to its completion?

Next steps need to be time and date specific. “I’ll call you back next month” is not the same as “We’ll speak next Tuesday at 3 p.m. Eastern Time to discuss the merits of the proposal after you have had the opportunity to review it with your peers, correct?”

Examples of Next Steps

Do you have permission to send literature, an email or a fax while also setting a specific date and time to call to be sure the information is received and to answer questions or discuss the materials?

Is Mrs. Prospect willing to accept your proposal or do they want a demonstration or presentation?

Is a call required to answer or clarify any complex issues?

Are you in the habit of following a phone call with a fax or an email?

Do you follow a fax with a phone call or an email?

What about following an email with a phone call or a fax?

Conclusion

If you or your sales force has not defined the characteristics of a most profitable prospect, it is time to do so. Consistency of definitions and the use of a well-defined sales system result in qualified prospects that are well qualified and ready to buy what you are selling.
