Just to recap, we got as far as Luke 24:2-3 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. 3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. OK so we had verse 1 describing the visit after the first Sabbath and now in verses 2 & 3 the sunrise visit after the second Sabbath. Pressing on in verse 4 we find the phrase “And it came to pass” which always means some time has elapsed. This means there was a space of time between them entering the tomb and the time of meeting the two men in shining garments.
4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: 5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, 7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. 8 And they remembered his words,
These verses are a record of the sunrise group’s experiences as compared to Mary Magdalene’s experiences which took place hours earlier. Now we have something which can only be an overview of the whole day’s events summarised by Luke in four verses:
9 And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. 11 And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. 12 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
Luke also makes an error here by referring to the disciples as the apostles. Now when Luke wrote his account, possibly in and around 70 AD, the disciples had long been apostles and Luke had forgotten that at the time of the resurrection the eleven were still only disciples - not apostles. They did not become apostles until Pentecost which took place after The Lord’s ascension. Now because Luke’s account seems to be more problematic than the other three accounts and we have now discovered he had a little problem with detail we have to dissect what he has written in these verses. First he has not recorded the two separate visits to the tomb, first by Mary Magdalene and then later by the other Mary with other women at sunrise. What he has done is lump both these visits in together as one which is why he then records Peter now running off. Peter didn’t run off to the tomb twice, only once and had already done that hours earlier when only Mary Magdalene had come to him to tell him the Lord was raised from the dead.
Now these may just be errors caused by the passing of time, don’t forget Luke’s account was written forty or so years after the events of that wonderful day so it would be easy for a few minor details to be recorded inaccurately. Then on the other hand we do have those vested interests which I mentioned earlier, and these people would be more than happy to see confusion recorded in the pages of Holy Scripture. If it was some of their ‘handy work’ then we can now see that they failed in their mission - The Truth can never be hidden!!
We now move on to the story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus and one of the most uplifting stories in Holy Scripture. The issue within this passage of Scripture, for us in this study, is the business of whether or not this was the ‘third day’ as written in English translations of The Holy Bible. Here is the verse:
Luke 24:21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
OK, so was it, because if it was then everything I have written thus far is compromised and we most definitely have a confliction or a contradiction? I will now copy all the other verses relevant to this story so we can learn the true meaning of this account. The problems here are twofold 1) incorrect emphasis on the subject matter: 2) and because of that misplaced emphasis again we are left asking the question, who was responsible for changing that emphasis!!?? Now you will notice that I have underlined above, not only the words ‘third day’ but also ‘these things’, so let’s copy the other Scriptures below:
Luke 24:13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. 16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. 17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? 18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? 19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
Having underlined and emphasised the subject matter of this conversation we can now see that the number of days since these things had occurred is an irrelevance. The phrase ‘today is the third day’ is like the ‘indeed’ Sabbath I revealed in an earlier article - it’s gratuitous nonsense!
We yet expected that He is the One being about to be loosening (redeeming) the Israel but surely and together to all these third this day it is leading from which these became.
Above is the Greek rendering and even here we can see the emphasis is on the happenings or the things of the last few days not the number of days passed. What we now have to ascertain is whether they are talking about three things or the number of days passed? The other questions we need to ask ourselves are these, would the number of days passed be an issue to these two disciples as they walked to Emmaus or just the awesome happenings - don’t forget these were very emotional and traumatic times for The Lord’s followers? Again, to whom would this number of days issue be important - those two disciples (I don’t think so) or the later translators of this story (Ah yes, now were talking!!)?
Just to firm things up in our own minds, what were the three things that these disciples would have been discussing as they walked and talked with The Lord Jesus Christ on the road to Emmaus? 1) How their Master has been falsely accused, tried and condemned to death by their own wicked religious leaders. 2) Tortured and crucified by the Romans and buried in a tomb. 3) His disappearance from that tomb and His reported resurrection. To suggest that they remarked on how many days had passed is sheer fantastical, religious intellectual humbug and nonsense – utter garbage.
To finish off I am going to use the assistance of my NIV Greek-Interlinear Bible (now there’s a surprise) where it clearly states ‘these things third’ in its rendering. This tells us quite plainly that it was three things that the two disciples were discussing with The Lord not how many days that had passed. The reality is that it was the fourth day since all these things had come to pass not the third day.
Here is another good point, if you ask anyone who has lived through an horrendous trauma of, let’s say, a serious road accident resulting in the near death of a loved one and the inevitable bedside vigil, sometimes for weeks, the people concerned always lose track of time and understandably so. If we then transfer this level of traumatic upheaval to those loved followers of The Lord Jesus Christ we can then begin to see the nonsense of the remark: “And it is now three days since these things occurred”. These fellas would not have known what year it was, let alone how many days had passed.
It’s time, therefore, for us to wise up to the religious contaminations in God’s Holy Word and get with The Truth - Jesus Christ.
I hope you have enjoyed this series of articles. I will follow up with a tidying up of some ‘loose ends’ so to speak as there are Scriptures in Mark’s account which I did not cover.
