MOVIE TRIVIA SIDE BAR: For those who are too young to remember, lets jog together down the memory lane… Once upon a time when film copy was so expensive that film rolls were shared by multiple movie theaters. Or, sometimes the same guy happened to own a bunch of movie theaters within the same town.

All movies came in two reels - Reel 1 and Reel 2. After the Reel 1 was finished in one theater, while the good folks smoke their cigarettes (yes!) and enjoyed their cool beverages during the INTERMISSION, a courier rushed the Reel 1 to the other theater on a motorcycle, grabbed Reel 2 and zapped back to the first theater, just in time to catch the end of the INTERMISSION.

I remember sometimes just sitting there eating and drinking for over half an hour and waiting for the second half to begin because the poor courier would get stuck in traffic somewhere :-))

That was the function of the INTERMISSION back in those good-old bad-old days and you’d see an INTERMISSION in most of the long-winded movies shot (I’d say) before the ’70s…

Watch six and seven year olds play a 6v6 soccer game. Find the soccer ball, and there you will find a “beehive” of soccer players. Why are all these players swarming the soccer ball? They want to kick it! Boot it! Touch it. Anything to make their parents cheer. The problem is, there are nine other players on the field trying to do the same thing.In a 6v6 game, the young players have a one in ten chance of touching the soccer ball at any given moment of the game. And some will not touch the soccer ball if they are not as aggressive as the other players.

So, the real question becomes, why not put kids in an environment in which they can kick or touch the soccer ball. Seems to make sense but in hundreds of communities across the nation, beehive soccer is being played.

Modified soccer can be the solution. Yes, there are a lot of “modified” soccer programs out there. The national soccer associations have been promoting modified soccer for years. They tout more touches, easier and clearer decisions, and ability to play both sides of the ball. These are just a few of the examples of the reason why to play modified soccer. The state programs have followed suit and the “micro” philosophy has trickled down to a lot of soccer clubs by virtue of them wanting to be able to compete against the clubs that bought into the micro concept early.But there are still a lot of grass root organizations that feel it is a step backwards to start playing 3v3 soccer. They have been programmed for many years that their league starts off playing at 6 v 6. And if they hang with it, they can work up to the ultimate goal of playing 11 v 11. So to play 3v3 seems like a major step backwards to a lot coaches and parents alike. Other excuses include the lack of field space and the challenge of recruiting more coaches.

So what is the solution? Keep up the good work. We have definitely made progress. Common sense tells us players will get more touches playing 3v3 or 4v4 soccer. The players will get more attention from coaches with a smaller coach to player ratio. Keep answering questions. Show the leagues that they do not need more field space. We also need to answer the challenge of recruiting more coaches. This is actually an opportunity. The “modified soccer level” is the perfect time to recruit coaches. Smaller team sizes, goals of making sure the kids have a fun soccer experience along with terrific training, and the chance to grow as your child grows are just a few good reasons to volunteer.In this is the year of the Women’s World Cup, it is the perfect time to be excited about soccer. When writing romance stories, sometimes things can become mundane or too familiar. We pull inspiration from what we experience in life and the people we know, but what happens when our characters and our ideas seem to resemble something else we’ve already written? There needs to be differences in our characters and plots. It can’t always be “boy meets girl and then they fall in love.” Readers would find that rather boring. Below are a few ideas that may help, if you find your story and characters too common.

Writing Suggestions

Point of View: Try telling the story (poem) from a different perspective. If you usually write from the female aspect, then try writing from the male’s point of view. Doing this may give your writing a fresh voice and some interesting ideas.

Switching Roles: Have your characters switch places. Make your male characters do things that you’d normally have the female characters do. It may seem like a strange idea, but think of how unexpected it could be for the readers.

Create Obstacles: Your characters need circumstances to overcome. If you write about a happy couple, and there aren’t any downfalls or challenges then your story is lacking something. Add conflict to the story and later resolve the issues. You want your readers to either root for the characters, or you even want them to loathe the characters. The main purpose is for your readers to react to the characters and the things happening. You want to spark their emotions.

Mixing in Genres: If your main theme is romance, it doesn’t mean that you can’t throw in a bit of action, comedy, or tragedy. Blending in moments of another genre can make your readers experience a wide range of emotions. Readers can get attached to the characters falling in love, laugh when they have awkward moments, cry when they are in turmoil, and so on.

Create Sexual Tension: If the characters have an undeniable attraction, but they aren’t yet together, then you’re keeping the readers in suspense. Readers will find themselves begging in anticipation for the characters to finally get together, so they’ll continue reading. They’ll want to know what finally forces the two characters together and what happens after their first encounter.

Observe Your Characters: Take a look at your characters and how you introduce them in the story. It’s important to bring in the characters into the story early on because you want your readers to relate them. It can be very bothersome to get through several chapters and not know the characters.

Pretty Imperfections: Are there any quirks you could give the characters that would help improve the connection your readers have with them? In order for your readers to relate to the characters they have to have imperfections. Also, these little imperfections are what could attract the two characters to one another.

Gaining Knowledge: I know that I have said this before, but this crucial to your story’s success or failure. I’m not saying to always play it safe; if you want to explore the unknown then you must research it. It’s great to write outside the box, but it’s important to gain knowledge first.

Pushing the Limits: Have your characters do something unlikely. It’s a nice surprise for the readers when something unexpected occurs in the story. Just keep in mind that you don’t want the turn of events to seem unrealistic, so don’t make it too extreme.
