Business Card Design for Entertainers

The main function of a business card is to provide your personal information. Being in the entertainment business, it is crucial to have a business card that is distinct and speaks volume about you and your work. Your business card should contain the basic elements like your name, contact numbers and services you provide. You have the option to put other personal details like home address and home phone number.

If you are on the market for a great business card design, you would be surprised at the many options you have. Aside from color and material, the orientation of the business card can also be changed to suit your preferences. Currently there are two options based on orientation: the horizontal and vertical layouts.

As their name implies horizontal and vertical layouts differ in presenting information. Although the vertical layout would appear to be more creative, there is really not much you can do when it comes to choosing a style. The horizontal layout is best for you if you prefer a business card with only the most basic information. For example, just your name and number would be enough.

On the other hand, a vertical business card allows more freedom when it comes to putting details such as a logo or a graphic image. For example, dancers can put an image of a ballerina; musicians can place musical notes, etc.

If you still have difficulties thinking of a great business card design, you should check the available samples on the internet. As long as you are looking, you can also download free software; gather information and tips on how you can choose the best business card design and so much more.

Since business cards are one of the most cost-effective advertising tools you can take advantage of, you can still save money by doing it yourself. All you would need is a reliable printer that could deliver good image quality and that’s it. Just use the most user-friendly software you can find and you will soon find your self with a batch of neatly-printed business cards.

For those of you who don’t have the time for this, you can always order from a store that provides these services. You can just provide your personal details, choose a template and your business cards would be available to you in a couple of hours. For added fun, choose a colored business card for drama and style.

Childhood Cancer, Asthma, Allergies - Are Chemicals To Blame

Infectious diseases like polio and smallpox are virtually unheard of these days. However, cancer, asthma, and life-threatening allergies are on the rise in children. In fact, cancer is the number one cause of disease-related deaths in children, according to the American Cancer Society. As well, asthma rates have more than doubled in the last twenty years.

When I think back to my school years, I can only remember two children who had asthma or allergies. At that time, peanut butter sandwiches were allowed in school. As well, no one knew what anaphylaxis was or what an Epipen was! I also never knew a child who was diagnosed with cancer.

However, I cannot say the same thing about children growing up today. At my daughter’s birthday party last year, two of the eight children who attended had severe food allergies. I also personally know people whose children have battled cancer. Some have won the battle; others were not so lucky.

So what is going on? Well, in the last fifty years, a minimum of 70,000 synthetic chemicals have reportedly been created. These chemicals are being used in our food and everyday consumer products that we buy. What is most frightening is that the majority of these chemicals have not been tested for their effects on humans. And now, there is more and more literature that is showing that their overuse is disrupting our bodies’ natural defense systems.

Many people believe that manufacturers would not sell unsafe products to consumers. Well think again. You may be suffering from aches and pains that are related to chemical sensitivities, but do not even know it. Formaldehyde is one of the most common, of many, chemicals found in our everyday household products! As defined in the 17th edition of Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, formaldehyde “is used as a preservative,” and “has been shown to be carcinogenic in certain animals and is possibly a carcinogen in man.”

So what are we waiting for? Are we going to wait for the government to step in and protect our children? Think of how long we were exposed to cigarette smoke before it was finally recognized that second hand smoke could cause cancer. By recognizing that chemicals are causing many serious childhood illnesses, we can begin to control what our children are exposed to in everyday life.

Kimberly Gingras is a work-at-home mother of two young children. She has a university degree in a healthcare-related field, and believes that it is easier to stay healthy than to get healthy. She has eliminated the harmful chemicals that she uses in her home in order to provide her children with a safer environment to grow up in. Communication Skills

Communication skills are what make you different from others. Before we go into details I will tell you the story of Jackal that fell into the washer man’s tub and was colored blue? Once upon a time there lived a jackal that strayed into a city in search of food. He was hungry and was being chased by a group of dogs. He accidentally entered the house of a dyer and fell into a vat of indigo (blue), and was stained blue from head to toe. When he escaped from the house back into the forest, all animals were surprised at his appearance and could not place its identity. Taking advantage of the situation, the jackal decided to play the situation to his advantage. He proclaimed that he was Fierce Owl, sent by the king of Gods, Indra, to earth to guard the forest. The gullible animals believed the jackal. The jackal then appointed the Lion as his Prime minister, tiger as his guardian of the bedchamber and the elephant was made the doorkeeper. He then drove all the jackals out of sight from the forest for fear of being recognized. The animals would hunt food and bring it to the self-proclaimed king and the king would distribute the food to all equally just as a king would do. So he was leading a life of luxury. One day a herd of jackals were passing by, howling to their glory. Unable to control his natural instinct, Fierce Owl showed his natural voice and howled at the top of his voice. Hearing this howl, the animals realized that they had been fooled by a jackal and killed the jackal instantly. Had he not opened his mouth with out giving proper thought, he would not have been killed.

No body knows what you are till the time you communicate with them. Your success or failure is entirely dependent on what impression you leave on others when you communicate with them.

Communication can be categorized as verbal and nonverbal even your gestures and body language can speak a lot. Here we will be talking about the first type and we will broadly discuss the skills about which you, as a student are more concerned.

Good Communication Skills are essential
Being an effective communicator takes real skill. Communication skills have to be developed, honed and added to on an on-going basis. They are the heart of interpersonal skills and the greater your awareness of how it all works, the more effective your communication will be. To be effective in interviews or practical examinations you have to communicate well. Here we look at basic communication dynamics, learning skills to improve your communication, using effective communication to improve your personality and promote interpersonal skills.

Communication Core Skills - The Essentials

Communication is Individual: We are not all The Same. When you look at communication, there is some thing more to merely possessing good presentation skills. Key for successful communication is to strike a good rapport with whom you are communicating. Everyone communicates differently and sees the world differently. The greatest skill you can have in order to instantly and significantly improve you communications skills is to understand the other person’s point view and how they see the world. Then you can adjust your own communication to take that into account.

You are the only one of you. There is never any one right way to communicate. Authentic effective communication always happens when we reply on those things we know to be true about or for ourselves. Remember your personal style probably says more for you that all the words you use can.
Interpersonal skills. Everything communicates. Remember! If you aren’t clear about what you mean and what your intention is, the other person (or people) could easily (and sometimes deliberately), misinterpret what you mean. What you do matters, as much as what you say. It’s now accepted that the words account for only 7-11% of a communication. Your behavior will ‘read’ unconsciously to other people and you can certainly be more in charge of the reading matter! Language is one of the most powerful reflections of how we think and feel about others and ourselves. You need to be aware of the padding, justifications and excuses you use and whether they are appropriate. You can make a big impact simply by changing some of your language and developing your verbal skills, this way you can significantly improve your communication skills.

Communication Cycle: There is a neat communication cycle which will help you to understand how to make communication work better. It means that you can take responsibility for every stage on the Communication Cycle. These steps are as follows:-

Typical Communication Cycle

Spoken

Heard

Understood

Agreed To

Acted On

Implemented.

In a typical communication process one or more of the above listed steps may be missing rendering the process ineffective and inefficient. Be aware of where you, or others, tend to fall off the cycle, as that is where misunderstanding starts which eventually leads to many problems.
Improving Communication Skills

Attitude: You can change the direction of a communication if you change your attitude. There is no one attitude that’s the ‘right’ one to have, though being direct and clear certainly helps. Just listen to other’s point of view also and do not have fixed ideas. Be prepared to change your line of argument if necessary.

Effective Listening and Responding: You can have tremendous influence on a communication as the listener and the responder. When we get little or no response from the listener, we often project our assumptions onto them about what they are thinking (and usually we assume they aren’t thinking good things about us!).

Be Positive: Use affirmation and encouragement to get the best out of any group that you may become member of. Notice when others do things well (even if it is part of their daily routine). This shows you are being attentive and considerate; most people respond well when they know that others are aware of what they do. This will do wonders for the students staying in hostels and becoming members of diverse groups. It is also important to have positive outlook about yourself and your achievements what ever these may be.

Essential Communication Skills for students.
As a student you have to pay special attention to following skills: -

–Listening

–Speaking

–Writing

–Reading

Listening

How to be an Effective Listener? Be the kind of listener you want others to be when you are talking. Ask, “How would I want others to listen to me?” That’s how you can be an effective listener.

Speaking

This is the most important and most feared of skill. Recent studies show that speaking in front of a group is by far the greatest fear of most people. Although the fear of speaking is common, studies show that one of the most admired qualities in others is their ability to speak in front of a group. Furthermore, other things being equal, the person who can communicate ideas clearly will be more successful. In order to speak well in front of any kind of audience one has to plan the introduction, main body, concluding remarks, timings and mode of delivery among many of other considerations. The first consideration in planning the body of what you have to speak is how to organize the main points, but organization of sub points is also important. Arrangement of the main points and sub points will help both the speaker and the audience remember the material-the speaker while speaking, and the audience while listening.
Most oral presentations, regardless of their length, can be divided into two to five main points. Five is about the maximum number of points from one talk that listeners can be expected to remember.

You cannot speak well unless

–You have prepared well. There is no short cut here.

–Are confident which comes through depth of knowledge.

–Have faith in audience. If you assume they are going to laugh at you in any case, you can not sound good.

–A rehearsal will help in boosting up confidence.

–Write points on which you are going to speak. It will not be a good idea to mug up the things you are going to say. It does not leave ant flexibility with you and if you forget you know what you will face.

Other Points to Consider

–Body Movements. Control your unnecessary body and hand movements. Movements must be to support what you are saying and should be used to make gesture.

–Eye Contact It is considered as one of the most important factors of nonverbal communication. Nothing will enhance your delivery more than effective eye contact with your audience. Eye contact is important for three reasons. First, it lets the listeners know that you are interested in them. Most people like others to look at them when talking. Second, effective eye contact allows you to receive nonverbal feedback from your audience. With good eye contact, you can gauge the effect of your remarks. You can determine if you are being understood and which points are making an impact and which are not. You will be able to detect signs of poor understanding and signs that the listeners are losing interest. Then you can adjust your rate of delivery or emphasis. Humor. Humor is of great use in breaking monotony and to draw the attention of the audience. Do not use it in isolation and it try to bring it naturally in the flow and commensurate with what you are to deliver.

–Intelligibility. What you are saying should make sense to those listening and not only to you. It will be better to take an independent view from some of your friends.

–Statistical and Visual Support. It will be more convincing if you can support of some valid data, best if you can support with some paper cuttings, photographs or even with video clippings.

–Time Management. Managing to restrict yourself to time limit will probably require a little rehearsal. Just keep an eye on the watch or may be use one of your friends to prompt you about the time.

–Use of Voice as discussed already in first chapter it is better to use heavy voice for which you have to practice. Make it a habit to use heavy voice as a routine it will help you.

–Give enough pauses and repeat important points. You should not be too quick to speak, give time for things to be digested by the audience and repeat if you feel it necessary.

–Overuse of pet words such as “OK,” “like,” and ”you know” should be avoided. These expressions serve no positive communicative function and only convey a lack of originality by the speaker.

Writing and Reading. You should adopt good habits as reading and writing can be termed as habits. One has to consciously develop these habits over a period of time. You should adopt good postures and not take short cuts.

Reading should be always be active and, if possible you should make note simultaneously. Just remember what ever you read will be erased from your memory if proper and timely revision is not done.

7 Reasons To Power Walk

When I was in college my roommate and I would take a 30 minute power nap every afternoon. One week her mother was visiting and was outraged that this was a regular occurrence. By the third day she joined us in our afternoon siesta, but warned that this would not go over well when we hit the “real” world.

Boy was she right! Sometimes I wish I could go back to those days. Recently, I discovered something even more invigorating than the power nap. I noticed a co-worker would be away from her desk everyday at 10 am and 3 pm like clockwork. When I worked up the nerve to ask, she told me she went out for a walk.

I decided I would adopt the habit. If only to break up the monotony of the day. I’ve discovered the power walk. Here are some of the benefits I am experiencing.

Energy Boost

In addition to being refreshing, the power walk is also invigorating and energizing. It gets your heart pumping, the blood flowing, and those synapses firing. Today, office workers spend most of their day sitting. Between the office commute, the hours spent in front of the computer, and sitting in front of the television for entertainment, your body does not get many opportunities to move around. The power walk is the perfect antidote for this. It gets your body moving, your brain thinking, and the blood flowing.

Breaks the Day Up

As I mentioned, my power walks are helping to break the monotony of the day. Rather than take on your work day in 4 hour increments, a 15 minute power walk in the morning and one in the afternoon will break your day into 2 hour increments. You can return to your desk, or meeting, alert and ready to take on the next chunk of work.

Mental Clarity

Sometimes my power walk is timed just when I’m banging my head against the wall trying to solve a difficult problem. Stepping away from the computer for a while helps. Your head will clear when you go for a walk. New solutions will become apparent to you. You will return to your desk with the perfect solution and the energy to execute it.

Calorie Burn

It’s no longer a secret that I am getting healthier everyday. Part of that is increasing the number of calories I burn. While a power nap might prove energizing, a power walk certainly burns more calories. You can get an extra hour of walking into your day with power walks. A 15 minute walk for a morning break, one for the afternoon, and a 30 minute lunch walk, gives you an hour of movement easily spaced throughout the day. It certainly beats staring into space while marching on the treadmill.

Socially Acceptable

My roommate’s mom was right. Dozing off at your desk while staring at the screen isn’t the best office etiquette. Worse than that, nodding off in the meeting while your boss is giving a very important (cough, cough) presentation. No one can fault the power walk though. Better than that, it gives the impression that you care about your health and you’re industrious.

Stress Relief

Ever feel like telling a co-worker, “Let’s take this outside.” Now you can, with just 2 more words. “Let’s take a walk outside. Or you can go by yourself. A short walk will help to diffuse the situation and loosen you up. It also beats a smoke break.

Fresh Air

Finally, it’s just good to get out and be around nature for a bit. Even if it’s the one tree in the parking lot. On a rainy day you could take a walk along the perimeter
of your floor so that you can at least see the outside. You can find out first hand what the weather is like.

Try it this week. Instead of taking a break at the snack machine, take a 15 minute power walk outside with a co-worker. Build your work relationships, and do something healthy for yourself. Best of all feel energized and have fun.

A Family Advanture At The Night Safari

Today is the last day of school holiday. My family decided at the last minute that we would go for a family advantage to the night safari.
The Singapore Night safari is the world’s first wildlife park occupying a land area of 40 hectares of dense secondary forest. This park opens at night from 6.00pm to 12.00 midnight. Here, you will find over 900 nocturnal animals of 130 species.

The Singapore Night Safari has been a six times winner of the Singapore’s Tourism Awards’ Leisure Attraction of the Year and is very popular with tourists.

We arrived here shortly after 7pm, just in time for the Borneo’s Thumbuakar Tribal dance. It was an interesting demonstration of the pipeblowing skill as well as their fire eating performances. My older boy Xuan was thrilled as he watched those tribal men blowing fires into the air. After dinner at the Bongo Burgers restaurant. The sky was completely dark.

We first went to the Amphitheatre to watch the ‘Creatures of the Night Show’at 8.00pm. It was a 30 mins performance by the nocturnal creatures like raccoons, owls, wolves, servals, binturongs and otters. We were reminded times and again not to use flashes as that would frighten the animals. The host was very entertaining and interactive and brought lots of laughter to everyone.

After the show, we embarked on our night advanture on foot (tram option was available). We first took the Forest Giant walking trails (one of the three walking trails) which was a spooky mangrow walk along the dense forest where crickets sounds could be heard clearly everywhere. We crossed a suspension bridge into the East loop. There was no moonlight and the paths were very dark …. but it was wonderful and exciting for the kids as the darkness added a sense of mystery to the air with faint afican drum beats heard from the distance (well, it was the pipe-in music :)).
Xuan kept pastering his dad for the small pocket torch light and he yielded finally. The torch light was helpful for certain stretch of the trail which could be very dark with little or no light at all.

We covered the first trail in about 20 mins and spotted animals like Babirusas, Bearded pigs, Bongos, Hyenas, servals along the way.

Second walking trail we took was the Leopard trails which led us to the Giant flying squirrel enclosure, terriory of the Tarsiers, pocupines, Leopards, owls and the mangrove bats. Many of the bats were low hanging and my husband almost run into two of them. Although bats are harmless, the sign says that they will bite if provoked. So that was a close shave :)

At times, it was difficult to spot some of the animals when they blend nicely in the dark or hide behind rocks/trees/bushes.

The last trail we took was the Fishing Cat Trail where more species of leopards were showcased. We saw Barking deers, Himalyan Tahr, Binturong, fishing cat, mousedeer and indian Aharial (crocodile) just to name a few.

By 10.15pm, we only managed to cover about 60% of the animals. However, the kids were too tired to continue, so we had to call it a day and left the rest of the animals to perhaps the next visit.

Tenant Loans - A Boon for Tenants

Tenants throughout the UK consider that it is difficult for them to seek a loan as compared to a homeowner. But, this is a wrong perception which they have in their mind set.

Tenants can easily avail tenant loans to fulfil their needs. Whether you want to buy a car or would like to go for a holiday trip, tenant loans are always there to help you in your tough time.

The good thing with an unsecured loan is that, the borrowers don’t have to put their property as collateral. This helps them in avoiding the threat of repossession of their property.

There are various private lenders across the UK, who can offer you a loan amount according to their equity present in your home.

An unsecured loan entails a higher risk as compared to a secured loan, so the interest rates are higher with this loan type. But, due to the fierce competition among the private lenders across the UK, loans can be availed at competitive interest rates.

There are specific lenders who also offer Tenant loans for those whose credit history is less than perfect. A bad credit history could be anything like missed payments, bankruptcies defaults or County Court Judgements.

You can procure a tenant loan faster as compared to a secured loan option. This is because the valuation of property doesn’t take place with this loan type.
In a tenant loan you can borrow a loan amount from £ 250 to £ 15000 and the repayment term varies from five to ten years. The lenders generally offer fixed interest rates with this loan type.
There are various lenders, who offer Tenant loan online in the UK. If you apply for such loans on the Internet, you would be contacted by several lenders with their loan quotes. Once you get a loan quote from them, you will be in a position to choose a good loan deal for yourself.

Best Loans - Available at a Click

There are many kinds of personal loans available in the market. Now which ones are the best loans for you? Well, you need to decide after a comparative analysis of the loan quotes. Let us have a look at the schemes available with the financial lenders and what could potentially be the best loan for you to choose.

The vital questions to be answered first:

Do you have a bad credit history?

Are you a home-owner?

How large is the loan amount you wish to borrow?

Does the interest rate on the loan include early repayment fees, or arrangement fees, etc ?

For home-owners with a a not-so-good credit score, secured loan (where you have to pledge your home as collateral) can be the best deal. A secured loan has many advantages:

1. Much lower rate of interest

2. Flexible criteria for repayment
3. Easier qualifying terms
4. Higher amount of loan sanction

In case, your debts are mainly credit card debt, and you have a credible credit rating, you’ll have an easier time finding a lender willing to offer you unsecured loans. The primary advantage of unsecured loan is that there is no risk of repossession of your house, in case you default on your repayments.
