Sit and go tournaments are a great way for new players to get into online poker. At many sites one can buy in for $3 or less and be part of a tournament that offers up to an hour of poker action. While mastering the intricacies of full stack no limit hold’em poker could take a lifetime to master, anyone can learn to beat the lowest stakes sit and go’s in a few days. This article describes a basic strategy for the first three blind levels that, while not optimal, will leave you on at least an even playing ground with the type of players who frequent these stakes.

Basically, the correct strategy at the beginning of a SNG tournament is to play few hands. There is something called the Gap Concept that encourages tight play which I will discuss here in further articles, but for now, just consider the fact that if you simply make it to second place without gaining a single chip, you will win 3 buyins, only two less than winning all the chips. So obviously there is something behind surviving to the end that discourages taking big risks.

Playing tight in a sit and go means folding over 90% of your hands in the first three rounds. If this sounds boring, well, it is, but keep in mind that the biggest sit and go winners at the highest stakes only play slightly more hands than this, perhaps 15% or so. From early and middle position (first five positions from first to act) you should fold everything but AK and a pair of jacks or better. When you do play one of these hands, raise to four times the big blind. In late position, if it has not been raised, you can add AQ and other pairs, but simply call the big blind with these hands. Finally, if at any point in the early rounds you find yourself with less than 20 times the big blind, fold the AQ and other pairs.

If facing a reraise to your initial raise with those hands, regardless of size, fold JJ and AK and push all in with queens or better. JJ and AK would be good enough to play with these stacks in a cash game, but in a sit and go, the risk of busting for all your chips is too great even if you are a slight favorite. With the AQ and other pairs if you are raised after you limped, fold. And if it has been raised once before you, push all in with AK and queens or better, but fold all other hands.

After the flop evaluate the situation. If you have top pair/an overpair or better against any number of opponents, bet the size of the pot and continue betting that size until the chips in the middle. If you are against one opponent, bet the size of the pot as a bluff regardless of whether you have anything or not one time. If called, or if you are against two or more opponents after your raise, check and fold on subsequent streets unless the opponent only makes a minimum size bet. Finally, if you got to see the flop for free in the big blind, check and fold on the flop unless you flop top pair top kicker or better, in which case you should bet the pot and continue doing so unless the board devalues your hand.

This is admittedly an extremely simplistic strategy, and perhaps some will say that it is not “real poker”, but it is actually not too far from the perfect early game strategy in sit and go poker tournaments at any stakes. Most of the positive expectation is in these bread and butter big hands, since there is less incentive to push with marginal hands in this type of structure. In fact it will give you a substantial edge against most low-stakes sng opponents who play loosely and badly. In the next article we will describe middle game and bubble play.

1. Plan your day the night before.

Have a list of to do things ready the night before of high and low priority. Aim to have things done before they become urgent so you are not always putting out fires. It is always easier to remember the things you need to do next when you are in the flow of activity, and so easier to get back into the zone the next day.

2. Take half a day to plan your week.

This was the hardest one for me to get into the habit of doing. I mistakenly thought that I could not afford to take that time out of my busy schedule. What I found after putting this into practice is that ‘busy’ time is not always productive time. Better to know exactly what you need to achieve and have a week that is already booked up with appointments or activities to move you towards your goal than to be planning minute to minute and just reacting to day to day emergencies.

3. Sharpen the saw.

This is a popular one in the personal development books. Another biggie for me in that I have always favoured the manic approach to work. I would do as much as I could possibly cram in, and stop only when exhausted. People with those kinds of additive personalities especially need to pay attention this one. Take a day off at least once a week. The winning formula is to really take that time. Don’t keep jumping onto email and mobiles as you will not be refreshed. I found the world and the workplace keeps turning even if I go to the cinema for a couple of hours! Put yourself first or you will be of little use to anyone else.

4. Take regular breaks.

This is a discipline for most people. Some thrive on exercise but it seems that most don’t! We lead sedentary lives and the more successful we are with online activities the less likely we are to move around. Schedule in some breaks and do what you love to do. DVD exercise sessions are good to do at home. Sit in the garden and relax for 20 minutes while you eat lunch instead of hunching over the laptop and dropping crumbs in-between the keys! I’m a great one for power napping. Take 20 minutes of guilt free power nap - that is a huge benefit of working from home. You will find that this can add hours of extra productive time to your day. Einstein did it so don’t feel guilty on this one.

5. Limit internet time.

I am a terrible culprit here. I confess to being a skype addict and hop on and off my e mail as many times as my daughter’s will let me near the laptop. This is an obvious one and we know when we’re doing it so the best thing is to just stop! Develop a routine i.e.; first thing in morning check e mails and jump onto skype or whatever your communication tool is. Send the messages you need to send and then get off. Log off so you can then focus on daily tasks without distraction.

6. Resist being on call 24 hours (aka. The superhero syndrome)

Your team/co workers can survive without you - I promise! They may even surprise you and come up with something better than they would have done with you checking on them every couple of hours.

7. Have office space.

Working from home is a serious business. Make the space, even if it’s a desk in the corner of the bedroom.

8. Set the family rules and guidelines.

Your family need to understand that you are serious about this and the benefits are huge but they need to be taught to respect your working space and time.

9. Focus on specific tasks

Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean it’s time to vacuum or dust mid-morning. Have a schedule and stick to it. If that’s what you want to do in your break then fair enough!

10. Employ yourself test

Keep a note of all your completed work tasks for the day. Look in the mirror at the end of it and ask yourself, honestly, whether you performed to the best of your ability that day. The truth will be looking right back at you!

LGV stands for “Large Goods Vehicle”. This type of driving requires a licensing process. This process requires a certain amount of training.The process of training to be an LGV driver is slightly different than that for becoming an HGV driver. Also, those who are interested in becoming an LGV driver need to note that The series of steps to becoming an LGV driver starts before the training. The first step to becoming this type of driver is to take a medical examination which would be provided by the potential driver’s doctor. The third step of LGV training would be to enroll in a one-day theory course. After this day is completed then the LGV written test would be taken. This training includes an assessment of skills before the LGV license is issued. The minimum age for driving an LGV vehicle is age 21 (Category C+E vehicle), and the minimum age for driving an HGV (Category C vehicle) is 18. The cost of LGV training and/or HGV training varies. Those who are serious about receiving this type of vehicle training are advised to get as high of a quality of training as affordable.
