I had a boss once that used to say that there were only two mistakes you could make as a marketer: the first was not to test and the second was not to believe the results of the test. It’s as true today as it ever was; testing, and careful tracking of results is essential.

Let’s assume you have a 1000 member opt-in list to a business-oriented newsletter. How do you know how valuable it is and what you can do with it? All you know right now is that they want a newsletter. Other information will have to come from testing.

How do you test? The classic method is A-B testing. We want to test offers. We divide the list into two 500-name segments by selecting every other name for one list, and alternating names for the other. We mail Offer A to one segment and Offer B to the other. We compare results to determine which offer works better. Offer A gets 4 orders. Offer B gets none. We now know something more about the list. Using this type of split testing, you can test almost any attribute of a promotion. Want to test a price? Offer A and Offer B. Want to test a layout? Layout A and Layout B. Technically, you can test just about any attribute you want.

My old boss also used to say: “measure recency, frequency, and value.” Test often but make sure that you keep careful records of the results. What you’re looking for - overall - is to understand how recently someone acted in response to any offer, the frequency in which they are willing to act (how many times can you promote to them!) and their average order and lifetime values. All of your testing should contribute to your understanding of these three criteria.

Diminished Value - Your Insurance Company’s Best Kept Secret

Diminished Value is the best-kept secret that your auto insurance company hopes you never learn. While the term, diminished value, may be a relatively new one to consumers, insurers are well aware of its existence, having paid claims to both insureds and claimants for more than eighty years.

What is Diminished Value?

Diminished Value is the term given to the loss in market value a vehicle suffers as a result of an accident and repair. It is a loss based on the beliefs of most people, that once goods become damaged, they are never as valuable as they would be had they never suffered injury.

Let’s say you are in the market to purchase a used car and run across two beautiful cars sitting side by side, both identical down to the last detail, offered for sale for $20,000 each. They are equipped the same, have equal mileage, and equivalent wear. The only exception, you are told, is that the car on the right has been involved in an accident at some point in its history. Considering that both cars are equally priced, would you rather purchase the damaged and repaired car or the one that has never been damaged?

If you are like most people who have answered that question on surveys, you will have chosen the car on the left - the undamaged one - unless, of course, you could negotiate a significant reduction off the selling price of the repaired car. How much of a reduction would it take to make you want the repaired car over the undamaged one? Figure that out and you will have determined the amount of diminished value that particular car suffered because of its damage history.

Causes of diminished value

There are many factors that cause repaired cars to become less desirable to buyers and lose market value, the most obvious being poor quality workmanship and use of inferior parts made by sources other than a vehicle’s original manufacturer. But there are a host of other, less obvious, factors that contribute to diminished value as well. Some of these are the loss of factory transferable warranty coverage on damaged and repaired parts, increased title and disclosure obligations, and the loss of eligibility for inclusion in manufacturer’s preowned certification programs.

Categories of diminished value

While an exhaustive list of causes would be too lengthy to include in this article, most fall into one of three categories.

Inherent Diminished Value:

The first is inherent diminished value, which considers factors beyond the power of shops and insurers to rectify. A perfect example of this is the perception that people carry in their minds that makes them distrustful of repaired cars. While these perceptions are the fault of no particular party, still they exist in people’s minds and are believed to be real, causing thousands of dollars in losses for consumers who wish to market their repaired automobiles. It should also be noted that inherent diminished value could occur even when cars are expertly repaired because in many cases it is simply not possible to talk some people into the purchase of a repaired car at any price when they are not open to taking a risk.

Insurers, too, understand diminished value and reluctantly admit to its existence when their backs are to the wall. During State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. v. Mabry, 274 Ga. 498, 501; 556 SE2d 114 (11/28/2001), a lawsuit that caused insurers to begin paying diminished value claims as a normal course of business in the state of Georgia, State Farm provided testimony under oath confirming that the potential for diminished value exists in every claim, even when cars appear properly repaired. Georgia Supreme Court Justice Robert Benham wrote the following November 28, 2001, recounting the testimony of State Farm’s witnesses and documents it presented during discovery:

“… The first question, whether diminution in value occurs even when physical damage is properly repaired, is one of fact. The trial court found that there is a potential for a diminution in value loss in every event of loss, and that diminution in value can occur even when a vehicle is repaired properly. In support of those findings, the trial court relied primarily upon documents produced by State Farm during discovery and upon the testimony of State Farm’s witnesses. The documents from State Farm acknowledged that there is a common perception that a wrecked vehicle is worth less simply because it has been wrecked. Witnesses for State Farm testified that a potential for diminution in value exists in every automobile accident, and that the public perceives a loss of value in any wrecked vehicle and would choose an unwrecked vehicle over a wrecked one, assuming the vehicles are otherwise the same …”

What was proven true in 2001 is still true today. Diminished value is a reality, even in cases where repairs eliminate all visual evidence of damage.

Shop Related Diminished Value:

Shop related diminished value is usually the result of poor quality workmanship on the part of repair shops. Mismatched paint, ill-fitting parts, rattles and wind leaks are example of shop related diminished value. If shops accept money from customers for performing particular labor functions, they have an obligation to perform the work correctly. When they don’t, evidence of their shoddy job is often visible for all to see, helping decrease the price a potential buyer would willingly pay for a repaired automobile.

Insurance Related Diminished Value:

Insurance related diminished value results when insurance company claims adjusters, either intentionally or unintentionally, omit needed repairs from an accident victim’s settlement. It may also occur when sufficient payment isn’t made to allow shops to perform repairs as a carmaker intended. As an example, poor-fitting aftermarket parts may cause insurance related diminished value when insurers specify their use instead of original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) parts.

Getting paid for diminished value

When it comes to getting paid for diminished value, three misconceptions abound.

First, many believe that a claim for diminished value is a claim separate and distinct from the one paying for actual physical damages like bent fenders and doors. This is not true. Rather, diminished value is an element of recoverable damage in the same claim that occurred at the same time, during the same event. An insurer that accepts liability and pays for any damage, must, where proof exists, pay for all the loss, except in cases where an exclusion in the policy exempts insurers from doing so.

Second, many believe one must sell his/her car to collect a diminished value claim from an insurer. This is another untruth. Insurers simply keep this myth alive to stall claims payouts for as long as possible, knowing the statute of limitations will eventually run out preventing a consumer from ever pursuing a recovery. Diminished value, like other elements of loss, is owed as of the date it actually occurred, not at some far-off unidentifiable point in the future.

Third, many believe that courts across the land have banned diminished value claims, labeling them as bogus. Again, this phony spin only benefits insurers who hope not to have to pay these claims. While it is true that some diminished value class action cases about a decade ago got tossed from courts by judges, it was because the lawyers could not show sufficient commonality to sustain a class of members, NOT because diminished value claims have no merit. Other cases have failed because claimants were unsuccessful at proving to the courts that their repaired cars were in some manner compromised despite best efforts to repair them correctly.

Conclusion

If you want to collect on a claim for diminished value, the burden of proof is on you to authenticate your loss. Sadly, the factor that most often prompts settlement of any claim, including that of diminished value, is the threat of litigation. Insurers pick and choose their fights. If they think you have the means to hire a lawyer and pursue a recovery, an insurer may consider you a threat and pay your claim for diminished value without too much resistance. However, if an insurer considers you to be a weak opponent, the claims adjuster will likely try confusing you with slick word tracks, ultimately stalling you for as long as possible.

For a quicker resolution, you can always forgo the diminished value claim with an insurer and take the loss against income taxes you owe. Still, you will have to substantiate your loss and will need the services of an expert to do that for you. Despite insurer’s obstinacy to the contrary, diminished value is owed where a loss can be proven, and those who are persistent stand the best chance of being paid.

An ezine is a newsletter that goes out to a very targeted (you hope) audience. If you’re interested in that audience, an ezine represents an advertising vehicle worth examining. Here’s a few tips on how to succeed with ezine advertising.

Pick the right ezine. The best way to do that is to read it - and not one issue but several. You want to be sure that quality of the ezine is consistent with the audience your want to attract and the image you want to assert. Also make sure you know the reach - how many subscribers - the ezine has.

Talk to the ezine publisher. They know they’re subscribers better than anyone else. Take advantage of their knowledge. Probe what type of offers work best with their audience and what type of placement yields the best results.

Double whammy. When you take space in an ezine, maximize its effect. Make two offers: an offer for your product or service AND an offer to get on your list.

Test. With any new advertising medium, it’s a good idea to test. Give consideration to testing the same ads in two ezines at a time to get an idea of which audience works better. Then test premium giveaways and physical placement of your ad within the winning ezine.

Build your brand. Don’t forget that an ezine, like any advertising medium is an opportunity to assert your brand in the eye of the market. Don’t miss that opportunity. Make sure your marks and value propositions are totally evident.

Do the math. Lastly, since you know the audience for the ezine, calculate what response, both click-through, and click-to-act, is necessary to achieve a breakeven on your offer. Make sure you do this in advance and then validate that the needed response rate is achievable.

Everyone likes good food right? Well a wedding is certainly not the place to skimp on food quality. This may be one of the most costly and stressful parts of planning any wedding. There are probably dozens of quality catering companies in your town, but that trick is to decide on a menu and budget and stick to it. Like any business they are in it to make money, and sometimes they may try and up sell you to something you may not really want and cannot afford. It’s also important to keep all of your guests and wedding party in mind when planning the menu especially the groom.

The first thing you should decide on is if you’re having a sit down dinner or a buffet style meal. There is no wrong answer to this, but it will definitely affect many aspects of your reception. Let’s look at the pros and cons of each choice.

If your nuptials are going to be a more elegant affair, a sit down dinner is a sensible choice. This allows you to seat your guests at assigned tables more easily and gives you a little more control over the traffic pattern in your reception hall. However, this is easily more complicated and sometimes a much more pricey way to go. You’ll need to narrow the choices down to two or three and get with each guest ahead of time to get they’re selection. Since there’s a lot more room for error with this, I recommend using a wedding planner or entrusting your maid of honor for this task. It can also complicate the seating arrangements as well. This may possibly take away from a casual reception and put undue stress on you and your guests by forcing seating assignments.

The buffet style reception is clearly more laid back, and gives you a little more room to play. You can still limit your choices to two or three, but you can also offer as many as four or five if you like. With this setting, it can be as simple or as complex as you like it. It gives people the freedom to get as much or as little of anything that they like, and they don’t feel cornered into making a decision way ahead of the big day. You can get into trouble with this, too, and you’ll have to decide how much food you’d like to make available. A buffet style menu gives people the idea that they need to indulge in the “all you can eat” mind set and this will definitely cost you a pretty penny. It makes seating arrangements a little easier on you because you don’t have to make place cards and guests are free to wander and socialize as they please.

Whatever route you decide to go, there are some things to always keep in mind. Once you decide on a number of guests, you should stick with it. There is no rule that you have to invite every person you’ve ever encountered since the second grade. Besides, you will have a budget and the food is where many brides and grooms seem to over spend on. When coming up with the choices though be conscious of anyone’s allergies, and try to be accommodating to those who have them. Your friends and family have come to see you get married and celebrate your love, don’t sweat the small stuff!

You can find more ideals that will help you with relieving stress from your wedding day Go to Wedding Favors or she could go to Wedding Gifts To get some great ideals for your wedding like a flagon for the spruce or a Money clip with his name impressed on the front. If you ought ideals for your rare Wedding Accessories go to My marriage

The fastest way to boost traffic to your site is with Pay-per-click advertising. It takes no time to setup, it’s economical (in that you pay only when someone clicks into your site) and it gets to work fast. One of the simplest, and biggest PPC programs you can use is Google’s AdWords. These are the ads that appear in the right-hand column of a Google search. Under the AdWords program, you create a simple 4-line advertisement and associate it with a series of “keywords”. According to the criteria you establish, when the keywords are searched, your ad will be displayed. When someone clicks on your ad, you will be charged a fee. Most PPC advertising programs work like this.

With most PPC advertising, the frequency of your ad being displayed, and the position in which it appears are determined by your budget. The larger the budget, higher the frequency. The larger your cost per click, the better position you get on display. With AdWords and Yahoo’s Search Marketing, for example, you would “bid” for the cost of an ad. The size of your bid determines the position on the search page results.

PPD advertising is a quick way to get traffic to your site. It’s also a quick way to burn through lots of money if you don’t have a complete promotional strategy. Make sure, before you start PPC advertising, that have suitable offers to click-through to. Also, if you’re using AdWords or Yahoo! Search Marketing, make sure your keywords are appropriate. No point in having unqualified people click through on your ads!

Identity theft gets so much air time in the press that many people get tired of hearing about it. They think that, like other crimes, identity theft is something that happens to someone else. The reality is that the commission of fraud through the assumption of personal information is the fastest growing crime in the country and more and more people are falling prey without even knowing it. The easiest targets for the crime are often the elderly and children.

Most children are issued a social security number at birth. This is convenient for mothers and fathers when it comes to filing federal income taxes but it also means that there is a valid, issued government identification number that no one will be actively monitoring for eighteen years. Thieves know this is typically the scenario and have become very astute at exploitation. Because of the rise of this crime, a generation of children is facing the possibility of starting their financial lives thousands of dollars in the red.

There are simple steps that can be taken to help protect your child’s financial future. First, make sure that when the social security administration provides the child’s official card to store it in a secure lock box or safe deposit box. Secondly, any forms that have the child’s number on them such as medical or school records should be safely stored under lock and key or shredded before disposal. Third, periodically check with all three major credit repositories to ensure that no credit has been established using the minor’s personal information. Fourth, if it is determined at any point that the child’s information has been compromised, immediately file a police report to make sure there is an official public record of the crime. Fifth, and perhaps most importantly, educate yourself and your child about credit, its appropriate uses, and how to read a credit report. If you can not determine what is in a report, you can not determine which accounts belong to you and which do not. Finally, there is one other aspect of child identity theft that is unique. Many cases are perpetrated by close family members such as mothers, fathers, and siblings who have access and opportunity. There can be a great range of emotions associated with this type of crime since few are eager to prosecute someone they love on a felony charge. This puts a huge burden on the family as a whole to help the helpless in monitoring their histories and keeping those less scrupulous individuals from taking advantage of the situation.

Identity theft of a minor is not the perfect crime. As illustrated above, there are a multitude of precautions Americans can take to help safe guard the financial futures of the young. With due diligence and the right amount of knowledge, it is a problem that can be managed and mitigated.

Building traffic to your web site is the key to success in internet marketing. As long as you have a steady source of traffic you have the potential for a steady source of sales. Without traffic, of course, you have nothing.

If you’re goal is to build traffic, you have to pay attention to and exploit the key traffic sources. These include:

Search engines. Focus on getting your rankings up, your keywords selected, and your site listed in all the major search engines. At a minimum make sure your listed on MSN, Google, Yahoo!, and the Open Directory Project (dmoz.org).

Start writing. Creating and distributing articles that have links attached in your biography are an excellent traffic source. Write regularly (some internet marketers produce hundreds of articles each week!) and submit the articles to various article distribution services - the content hungry web will take care of the rest!

Advertising. Advertising is also a good traffic source. Give serious consideration to pay-per-click advertising on search engines or specialty sites, but don’t ignore conventional print advertising either. The print market is more mature and often more targeted than what you’ll find on the internet. When you’ve acquired a list of your own make sure you’re sending regular emails to the list to drive traffic to your site.

Targeted directories. Locate the key directories or referral sites for your industry and get yourself listed. These sites will generate a steady stream of traffic over time.

There are other means of getting traffic, but these are the most reliable. Make sure that you have a structured program to exploit each of these first!

Are you looking to surprise your favorite college student with a unique fraternity or sorority gift that they can enjoy around campus and at home? There are many possibilities for unique gifts that your greek member will love!

Most sororities give members a keepsake pin of some kind that they wear to show off their membership to the sorority. But what do the girls do with their pins when they’re not being worn? Why not give your sorority sister a keepsake box to store her precious pin inside? The keepsake box will become a treasured item when it’s painted in the colors of the sorority with the name on the side.

What girl doesn’t love jewelry? Bracelets and necklaces featuring the sorority initials are always a well received sorority gift.

Fraternity members tend to prefer more practical items- like collectors glasses (monogramed shot glasses for example), or individual bottle coolers with the fraternity logo or initials on the side. Wallets and money clips with the initials are always a popular gift for fraternity members, also.

Both sorority and fraternity members appreciate any apparel item that can be worn to show their membership to the greek society. Jackets, sweatshirts, hats, t-shirts and athletic wear are popular gift items that can be purchased in any color, size, and with any sorority or fraternity initials or name on them.

College students living away from home often keep many photographs of friends and family from home in their college dwellings. Greek members love to display these photos in albums and frames personalized with their fraternity or sorority colors and initials.

If you’re still not sure what type of gifts your fraternity or sorority college student might enjoy, try a personalized key chain, license plate surround, or bumper sticker so they can proudly proclaim their greek status wherever they may travel.

Most know about the recent Anna Nicole Smith tragedy- a young, beautiful, woman found dead for no apparent reason. A young life wasted before it was time to quit. Youth, money, power and corruption gone wrong? In honor of her, a movie is being made about her life and should begin as early as next month- to release the movie while people are still upset over the ordeal.

The film is reported to cover Smith’s life from age 17 to her recent death- age 39. It includes the marriage to Howard, a billionaire she married to, and the death of her son as well. Luckily, producers have promised to focus on the ‘positive’ things about her life- not all the rumors, gossip, or ‘trash’. It already sounds a gripping watch and can be expected to keep viewers glued to the twists and turns of her curtailed existence.

The movie is possibly scheduled for release on television- a decision not decided just yet. No doubt there will be considerations of licenses, compensations and payments - rather as in the whirlwind days after her death. Money talks.

The casting call is currently open, with an emphasis on finding the right Anna Nicole- which the winner will have to agree to ‘partial nudity’ in certain scenes.

Apparently, the company responsible for the movie was already making it- it just happens that after her death they stepped up production a great deal. The last 2 years plans have been made for such an eventual release, but with her late death it will now be “kicked into gear” as Nasser, the producer noted.

Was it just a few short years ago that life on the internet began to take on a life of its own?

Was it just a few short years ago that I thought that a 2GB hard drive would be all I’d ever need?

Well, in terms of the internet, it probably seems like a long time, but in actual fact, I purchased my computer in 1997, just 10 years ago.

I thought I had all the bells and whistles, I was pretty proud of my new machine. I logged online and learned how to surf and how to chat and how to do internet marketing.

Flash forward ten years and I am still surfing and still doing internet marketing, but I have encountered a problem, which is beginning to be a major problem for me and many others like me. I HAVE DIAL-UP!

Everyone seems to be going to video and audio streaming, which leaves me sitting like a dork at my computer wondering what is going to happen and when. I get stuttering voices and pictures on hold and I wait 20 minutes for a video to load which then takes about 60 seconds when it finally makes it.

The cards that you can send to your friends have flash cartoons. Try that on dial-up! Again, you wait and wait to see if it is something you want to send to your friend. By the time it loads you could have gone to the store, purchased a real card, attached the postage and mailed it out.

When I first started on the internet, everything was text based and underneath the pictures there was a description, so you could actually surf with the graphics off and turn them on when you wanted to see something. Speed driving for those of us with dial-up. Cruisin’ the internet highway….yeah man.

Not anymore. Voices start stuttering as soon as you start loading a page and there is no shut off box. So, you end up having to make a choice….sit and wait for the page to load to see if it is something you want to really listen to, or close the page. Who knows, perhaps that page had the information you needed to change your life, but it took tooooooo long to load.

I realize that high speed is the way to go, and man I love it when I download at the office or at my boyfriend’s place. 5MB is a BIG file for me to download at home and forget about downloading any of the MP3 files. For anything over the 5MB I send a link to my boyfriend’s email and then when I am at his house I download and put it on my stick.

Remember that 2GB hard drive I had back in 1997? Well now I have a 2GB stick for transferring documents. Wow. Who would have thought it would come to this.

I don’t plan to give up yet. I still have hopes that high speed will reach me someday soon….either that or maybe I’ll move somewhere that has high speed, but that would mean giving up my 2 acres in the country. Hmmm, a hard choice.

My new computer is loaded up with 300 GB of hard drive, a CD/DVD burner, a floppy drive, a USB port, a good video card, cool blue lights and dual processor. I continue to do internet marketing, am continuously working on my webpages, and I am still waiting for high speed to come to me. However I live in a rural area and the cost of the satellite systems hasn’t come down enough yet for me to choose that route. So until then I will surf the best I can and download at my boyfriend’s place.
