The Bilingual Family is subtitled A Handbook for Parents, but to reach as many parents as possible it should be read by ESL teachers, too. While teaching English to immigrant parents of small children, I based several lessons on what I had learned from this book. Many of my students were unsure what bilingualism would do to their families. Should they let their children wait to start school before they learned English? If they encouraged the kids to learn English, would they (the parents) end up with no one to talk to in their native language? What if the children picked up the parents’ accent and mistakes? With this book, I was able to help them feel a little more sure of themselves.

In the first section, the authors (professional linguists, one British, one French) look briefly at bilingualism in general and the process by which bilingual children’s language skills typically develop. As they say, “Most children mix [the two languages] very early on and then gradually get things sorted out.” Possibly the most useful part of this section is the description of the three phases children go through while doing this. A parent who’s afraid her child is never going to speak any recognizable language, only a mixture of two, needs to hear that this is only a stage on the journey. The first section ends with a questionnaire to get parents thinking about bilingualism in their family.

The second section consists of 16 case studies, which remind the reader that each family is unique. One family got into the book after an author heard them on a ferry between England and Denmark. The children were talking to their parents in both English and Danish, seemingly at random. It turned out the family spoke English at home in England and Danish while visiting the mother’s family in Denmark. As the ship was in-between, either language would do.

The third section is an alphabetical list of topics from Accent to Writing, and suggestions for dealing with them if there are problems - like swearing or a refusal by the child to speak his parent’s language. My class had some good discussions on several of these topics.

Finally, this book is very positive about bilingualism. If students absorb what it says, they will realize they have a chance to give their children a great gift.

The Bilingual Family: A Handbook for Parents, by Edith Harding and Philip Riley, is published by Cambridge University Press (1986, ISBN 0 521 31194 1).

Log Products - What’s Available

Whether you’re shopping to furnish your log cabin, your country home, lodge or your townhouse, there are many products produced from logs that can enhance your home’s decor and outdoor environment. Log products give a rustic, homey feeling to their environment. Here’s an overview of what’s currently available:

Furniture

Furnishings are one of the main uses for natural logs. Beds, chairs, tables, just about any type of furniture can be made with natural logs. Instead of traditional stick type lumber, logs are fastened together to form a unique and rustic piece of furniture that should last a lifetime. An entire bedroom set can be purchased made from logs.

Art & Indoor Decor

Logs can be used to form shelving, branches can be used to form or decorate frames, artistically cut and set branches can be set in vases, there are infinite possibilities for using logs and branches in your decor.

Chainsaw Sculptures

One of the most popular artistic ways to use logs are with log sculptures. Log sculptures have been popular for centuries, going back to what we call “totem poles”, which are tall, carved sculptures generally originating in the Pacific Northwest, Canada and Alaska, where many Native tribes carved them for cultural and historical purposes. These traditional “totem poles” were always carved by hand, and usually made from a local type of cedar wood.

Nowadays, there is a thriving industry of chainsaw sculpture, where logs are sculpted using a gas powered chainsaw. There are many artists that specialize in this type of art. Some artists can achieve remarkable detailing in their art, while others tend to use a more rustic, simplistic style. A man in England carves mushrooms shapes out of logs for use in gardens. Even abstract artists have gotten into chainsaw sculpture. However, the most typical and popular examples of log sculpture using chainsaws are animals, most often bears. You’ll also see artists carve birds, fish, farm animals, statues and memorials, even people.

Chainsaw sculptures are one of the most popular ways to use logs for art.

Outdoor Furniture

Patio furniture made from logs is also popular, with many choices in this area, including log lounge chairs, log rocking chairs, ottomans, rockers, love seats, dining chairs, settees, chaise lounges, swings and complete outdoor furniture patio sets. Adirondack chairs are a popular style to make from logs.

Outdoor Uses

There’s also a vast amount of uses for logs for landscaping and other outdoor uses. Log decks are available which make a gorgeous addition to any home in the forest. Also, for those home by the water, with some moorage on a lake, river or near the ocean, log docks are available. Log docks are long lasting and look natural in their environment. Log docks may not be quite as stable however, so these won’t be a good choice for some homes. Birdhouses and doghouses can also be made from logs and branches. Fences are also being made from logs, with beautiful results.

With over 2 billion Internet users and nearly 200 million users in North America alone according to internetworldstats.com, the practicality of taking your business online is obvious. In case you need further convincing, take a moment to think of the number of emails you receive per day, the last time you searched the Yellow Pages for a listing, or the number of times a business associate or prospect asked, “What’s your website address?”

The Internet has become more and more mainstream for business owners and most now take for granted that their companies must have an online presence. Some businesses have websites just to say that they have one, while others recognize the important role a website plays in their overall marketing strategy. Whatever your reason, you should know that if you’re going to invest the time and money in developing a website, you should reap every advantage it can offer:

Global Awareness of Your Business - The Internet is made up of multiple distribution channels such as online directories, e-zines, blogs, networking forums and more that can generate awareness of your business, products and services through linking, submitting articles or interactive participation.

Level the Playing Field - Whether you’re a mom-and-pop shop or a Fortune 500 company, whether you’re doing business on Main Street or Wall Street, establishing your business online gives you the presence and image to compete at every level.

Put Your Best Foot Forward - Your website can reinforce or replace your corporate print material and work 24/7 to promote and sell your products and services. Unlike print brochures, catalogs and other static media, your online information can be enhanced on the fly, allowing you to adapt to rapid changes in business climates, inventory, customer needs or to your competitors.

Get More Satisfied Customers - An online presence will allow you to provide your customers or prospects with immediate answers to their questions without their waiting for your physical storefront to open, being placed on hold, or awaiting delivery of your company brochure. Saving your customers time in turn saves you the exorbitant cost of print advertising design, manufacture and mailing - and possibly the cost of losing your prospect during the wait.

Reduce Operating Costs - You can sell your products and services online and automate responses to customers without the need for additional sales or customer service staff.

Minimal Investment, Higher Returns - Whether you build your website yourself, purchase a low-cost template or get a custom design by a professional designer, a successful website produces a higher return on investment than any other medium. Consider the cost of a website compared to the expense of an ad in the Yellow Pages, print marketing materials or the additional staff required to offer round-the-clock service, and you’ll find that a website can offer your business greater exposure, savings and profit potential than other methods for only a fraction of the price.

The fact is that the world of online commerce is thriving and if you’re not there yet you should be - to ignore this trend is nothing short of committing business suicide. To help you get there I’d like to share a few important steps and tips to make your trip to the World Wide Web a success:

1.-Know your reason for going online. Whether it’s to replace your company brochure, sell your products and services or lend credibility to your business, knowing your purpose will help you achieve your goals and objectives faster.

2.-Hire a professional web designer. Of course you can attempt to build your website yourself or rely on your friend’s nephew, but having an amateur website will only hurt your business. It’s not the image you want to portray to prospective customers and it certainly won’t give your business the credibility it needs to compete.

3.-Select an appropriate domain name. Your domain name is your online address; the easier it is to remember the better for business. Keep it simple and make sure it appropriately represents your business. I suggest using your business name if it’s available.

4.-Get the right hosting provider. Your hosting or Internet service provider will give you the space you need to put your business online. Make sure they have at least 99% uptime, because whenever your host’s servers go down your website will too, potentially costing you business. Make certain they offer 24/7 customer support so you don’t waste excessive time troubleshooting.

5.-Find a happy medium between copy that sells and keywords. Installing the right keywords may make your website more appealing to search engines, but remember that your text is also being used by your prospective clients to decide if you’re the right choice. Hire a professional copywriter if necessary.

6.-Market and promote your website. Once you’ve successfully taken your business online, it’s important to promote and market it effectively to reach the 2 billion-plus users on the Web. You can do so by submitting your site to online directories, optimizing your site for search engines, gaining top search engine placement using pay-per-click, and placing your web address on all marketing collaterals including business cards, direct mail, email signatures and more.

Not all banks who offer secured credit cards advertise the fact. Because of this, you may find yourself applying for numerous unsecured credit cards before you come across a secured credit card application.

This can result in numerous inquiries on your credit report and a decrease in your credit rating (which is part of what got you here in the first place)!

If you want to find the banks who offer secured credit cards without going through all of the hassle normally associated with doing so, follow these seven tips:

1. Be Realistic

The first thing you need to do when looking for banks who offer secured credit cards is be realistic about what you’re going to qualify for.

Don’t apply for an American Express or a Diner’s Club card thinking they’ll offer you a secured credit card if you don’t qualify. As a rule, upper-crust credit card companies do not offer secured credit cards.

2. Utilize the Web

When it comes to searching for banks who offer secured credit cards, the Web is your very best friend. There are informational websites that offer a wealth of knowledge on secured credit cards and they can even direct you to sites that allow you to apply for secured credit cards online.

3. Target Your Search

Rather than haphazardly filling out credit card applications hoping to run into a secured credit card opportunity, look specifically for secured credit card applications to fill out.

The banks who offer secured credit cards do want your business and they aren’t really hiding from you. Search for secured credit card applications and you’re likely to find just that.

4. If It Sounds Too Good To Be True…

As with any credit card offer, if you run into a secured credit card offer that sounds too good to be true, proceed with caution.

Some of the banks who offer secured credit cards really don’t have your best interests in mind. That is why it is important to deal only with reputable credit card companies.

5. Understand the Differences

When looking for banks who offer secured credit cards, make sure you understand that not all of them are created equal. Some will charge higher fees, while others will charge higher interest rates.

Before applying for any single secured credit card, evaluate the costs of that card and make sure it’s the card that will best meet your personal needs.

6. Don’t Pay Anything Up Front

Never, ever deal with the credit card companies that ask you to send them cash up front. Nine and a half times out of ten they are a scam.

A legitimate secured credit card company will charge any applicable fees to your new credit card account, allowing you to pay them off after the card is in your hands — not before.

7. Easy Does It

Keep in mind the golden rule — less is definitely more. Too many credit card applications equals too many credit inquires. Just because you find ten banks who offer secured credit cards, it doesn’t mean you have to apply for all ten of them.

By following these seven steps, not only will you be able to find the banks who offer secured credit cards, but you’ll be able to tell the good from the bad in seconds flat.

As someone who worked in the restaurant industry I became almost annoyed with the lack of education people had in wine tasting. I almost think it should be mandatory for everyone who plans on sipping on a glass of wine in a restaurant to take a quick introductory course in wine tasting. Wine tasting is not an art that must be mastered with years in years of practice, however it requires simple steps to ensure that your taste buds can full appreciate the taste of that finely aged wine. I have outline a simple 4 step process that once read will transform your average wine idiot into a fine wine connoisseur like me.

The most important part of tasting the wine is actually to smell the wine. If you already don’t know this your sense of smell allows you to taste what you are eating. For instance if you are sick the food you eat doesn’t taste like it normally does. This is because your nose is stuffed and you are not breathing the aromas of what you are eating. Or another example is your little 3 year old who plugs his nose when he is eating green beans. This 3 year old is actually very smart; cutting off his sense of smell will allow him to not taste what he is eating. So to make a long story short remember to SMELL the wine.

Step 1. Allow the wine to breath. This is done by holding the wine glass by the stem and swirling the wine in a circular motion so it moves up the sides of the glass (but not over flowing). Allow the wine to “breath” for a few seconds while you take in the aroma it is releasing.

Step 2. Discontinue swirling the glass, place your nose right next to the glass, and inhale. See if you can smell any distinct flavors (peaches, cherry, smoke, earth, pineapples, citrus, etc). Depending on the wine it may have many smells that it resembles. Look for aromas such as vanilla, oak, butter, spices, etc.

Step 3. Sip a small amount of wine and swish it around your tongue so the entire surface area of your tongue is covered. Allow the wine to sit in your mouth briefly as you take in the aromas through your nose. I find the best way to fully taste the wine is to chew it as if it were food. Do not gulp the wine; rather slowly take it in over small swallows.

Step 4. Take notice of the flavor in your mouth. Do you feel dry on the roof of your mouth when you touch your tongue to it. This is called tannin of the wine. The more the tannin the dryer it will feel in your mouth. Tannin is associated with drier wines such as cabernets and chardonnays.

See now you can consider yourself a professional wine taster rather than a savage wine drinker. Enjoy!

The restaurant business has felt the effects of the recent study about trans fats and their detrimental effect on your health. Some cities and communities are even banning trans fats from being used by restaurants in their community. Let’s look at some alternatives and find out what trans fat really is.

What Is Trans Fat?

Trans fat is industrially created oil that is made by hydrogenating plant oils. Partial hydrogenation changes the oil’s molecular structure and it has been shown in studies to increase the risk of coronary artery disease or heart disease. Trans fats that are industrially created are considered to be a health risk and are not needed for your health, unlike other types of fat such as naturally occurring fats and oils.

Health Risks

Trans fats have been shown to raise the level of bad cholesterol in your body and lower the amount of good cholesterol. This is unlike naturally occurring fats including saturated fats, where they may raise your bad cholesterol, but they do not have the added effect of also lowering your good cholesterol as well. In other studies, concerns have also been raised about trans fats contributing to cancer, diabetes, liver disease, obesity and even fertility, though there is no scientific consensus on these additional effects. Consider that the majority of processed foods have or have had trans fats in them for the last few decades, and the increase in heart disease during that time, then you might become very concerned.

How To Spot Trans Fats

Just look on the packaging and the ingredients on the label, whenever you see the words “partially hydrogenated” along with the name of an oil, that is trans fat. It’s in thousands of products that are eaten everyday, but it most often occurs in packaged cookies, cakes, breads and many other processed, fried and baked foods that sit on the shelf of your grocery store. Also, many restaurants use trans fats to fry their fries or other foods.

Alternatives

As a result of the recent scientific evidence as to the harmful effects of trans fats, many food companies and even many restaurants are seeking out alternatives that will offer a similar taste to customers without the harmful effects. Leading the way, companies including Disney and Wendy’s have already eliminated the use of trans fats in their theme parks and restaurants worldwide. Some alternatives to trans fats include butter, butter fats, coconut and palm oils, fully hydrogenated vegetable oils, liquid vegetable oils including soy, canola and rapeseed oils and new genetically modified fats that are in development.

While not all the alternatives are “healthy” fats in a traditional sense, they are better alternatives to trans fats as they do not lower good cholesterol as trans fats do.

Preschoolers have lots of energy and physical play that involves movement is a vital part of their day. All children learn and develop through exploration and discovery. For preschoolers, this exploration typically involves running, jumping, throwing, or some other type of movement. It is recommended that preschool and elementary age children participate in 90 minutes of physical activity each day. Playing outside is the best way to ensure your child moves enough, but what do you do when it’s too cold or on a rainy day? There are a number of fun activities you can initiate with your preschooler indoors that will still promote movement and can enhance learning as well.

Have a campout in the living room. Drape blankets over tables or chairs, or pitch a play tent like the Galt Teepee. A fireplace makes an excellent campfire, or substitute by sitting a lamp in the floor. Tell spooky stories, “toast” marshmallows in the oven and make s’mores, and play an indoor game of horseshoes by tossing beanbags at a paper horseshoe pit.

Indoor obstacle courses are also a lot of fun on a rainy day. Set up an obstacle course in your living room or basement for your preschooler to maneuver through. You may want to set up a row of chairs to crawl through, a small table to crawl under, and a stack of clothes or stuffed animals to go over. Place several toys in a zig-zag pattern for your child to move around and a box he must throw a ball into. Be creative and use a variety of household objects to make the course. Encourage your preschooler to walk through the course, then to crawl, and then maybe to move backwards through it. Have fun and help your child experiment with different ways to move his body.

Put on a play with your preschooler. Choose a favorite story or make up a story of your own together. Choose music for your production and go through old clothes to make costumes. Stories that involve animals are a lot of fun. Each of you can pretend to be one of the characters and act out the events in the story. Encourage lots of movement throughout your play and consider recording it after a couple practice runs if your child is still interested.

Throw a dance party. Children love music and participating in musical activities has been proven to enhance learning in young children. Bring out the instruments or create your own with sanded wood blocks, pots and spoons, or film canisters filled with rice. Dance around, wiggle, and jump while you and your preschooler play along. Dance to a variety of music, experimenting with many different rhythm patterns and tempos.

Set up an indoor “sand” box for hours of preschooler fun and to enhance fine motor development. Fill a large plastic bin with a variety of shaped pasta, dry beans, or rice. Rice is the messiest material to choose, but a large sheet beneath the container shoud contain most of the mess. Provide cups, scoops, and other sand and water toys and allow your child to explore the various ways he can fill and pour the materials.
