Despite what many may tell you…successful marketing does not happen overnight. It takes time, testing and a plan.

You may be extremely surprised to first learn that some marketing and advertising campaigns are considered a success if they break even. If you spend $500 on the ad placement and you get back $500 in profit, it may be a great success for your business.

WHAT? How can breaking even be considered a success?

Most business owners never put 3 seconds worth of thought into what the lifetime value of your clients may be. Lifetime value of a client is calculated by adding up the initial purchase (averaged out) of a first time buyer in your business, multiplied by the amount of times in a year they buy from you, multiplied by how many years they stay a loyal client.

For example:

A hairdresser’s average first time client is worth about $25, returns 10 times per year, and on average remains a customer for 3 years.

Multiplied out, that makes each and every client worth $750 to the hairdresser. (25×10x3).

If you are a hairdresser and look at each new client as being worth $750 to you, what are you willing to do to get more clients? Would you spend $50 to make $750? I would certainly hope so. If not, let me repeat, each and every new client is worth $750 to you. Bring in 10 new clients a week and you are adding $7500 in new business a week. While you earn the money over the next few years, it is money you NEVER would have had.

Do the math in your own business, the numbers don’t lie.

Now, here’s the real exciting part. The key to lifetime value is to increase each number by small (or large) amounts. For example:

A hairdresser doing it the old way would see a first time client for $25, have them come in 10 times a year, and spend about 3 years as their client.

Now a hairdresser doing it the new way would see a first time client for $35 (by adding up-sells and products at the till, and making sure everyone knew about them, an extra $10 at minimum). The hairdresser would then have them come in 10 times per year (or even once a month through consistent reminders and bonuses). And have them spend 3 years as a client (or even 4 years, because if you treat them well enough, they will not leave as quickly)

Now look at the numbers, that’s $1050-$1680 for every new client! (35×10x3, 35X12X4).

By putting a little more effort into getting them back more often, having them buy more while they are there and staying a loyal client longer you have almost doubled what they are going to spend with you!

All by paying attention to them and making sure they get the best services and treatment possible.

Now, how much will you spend to get a $1680 client for the first time?

Do the math and your world will quickly expand as you see the big picture.

Now get your pen and paper out and start adding!

Do you feel like you are spinning your wheels?
Do you have a business or personal goal that seems unreachable?
Is your life is way off kilter?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, here are few tips for you.

Spinning Your Wheels

If you are stuck in the muck of an ordinary life, do yourself a favor and come to terms with what is truly interesting and important to you. For me, it’s always a list. Then ask yourself how much time you’re spending doing the things that are no longer of any interest to you. Start eliminating the tasks, roles and events in your life that no longer fit. This process allows you to make time for the projects and hobbies you’ve missed due to your prior commitments. Spring is the perfect time for renewal.

Audacious Goals

Map out an outline to reach your seemingly unreachable goal. The only way to “eat an elephant” is one bite at a time. Consider reaching out to a trusted mentor who has already accomplished a similar plan. You might find working with a professional coach as an accountability partner helpful. One you’ve determined the steps you need to take to reach your goal, add a critical path time-line (start with your goal date and work backwards) to your calendar. These steps will help you become accountable for every bite. Before you know it, your audacious goal will start to materialize and PRESTO… Big Audacious goal accomplished.

Well-Balanced Living

Part of being alive is wearing many hats. We are parents, spouses, friends, entrepreneurs, employees, siblings, sons and daughters. Discovering the right balance of family, work, spirituality, fitness, education and more can be daunting if you don’t know where to start. I’ve found the best way to tackle life balance is to be honest with yourself and identify the areas in your life that are suffering. One recommendation is taking time to assess your life. Make a list of all of the areas that make up your world, then rate each area on a scale of 1 to 10. The higher number reflecting the areas where you spend most of your time. In a matter of minutes you will discover the areas in your life that may be out of whack. Once you know where the deficits are you can start to rearrange your priorities. Once you’ve rearranged your priorities you are taking a big step on the path of true balance.

How To Pair Food And Wine

As someone who worked in the restaurant industry I became almost annoyed with the lack of education people had in wine tasting. I became even more annoyed with the fact that people clearly don’t know how to pair wine with food. It can be assumed that some people agree that the wine should be paired with the person. I disagree. Certain characteristics of wines react with certain characteristics of foods on a very sophisticated level. Below is a quick general breakdown of which wines pair well with certain foods.

For the ease of reading I will list the major varietals of grapes separately and pair them. In the red wine group I’ll start with Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir is best paired with poultry, beef, fish, ham, lamb and pork. It also complements creamy sauces, spicy seasonings, and may be the most versatile food wines.
Merlot is best paired with beef and lamb meals, but it can also work with venison, antelope, elk, duck, goose and squab. A nice fish dish that may be blackened will complement merlot fabulously. A stronger meat would want to be avoided such as moose.
Cabernet Sauvignon is a heavier bolder wine and following such should be paired with a heavier bolder food. Cabernet is a very versatile wine that breaks down the fats in foods wonderfully. This would be a great wine to pair with red meat, including steak, roast lamb, and game. Try enjoying a Cabernet with a nice Prime Ribeye steak.
Next I’ll move onto the white wines and start with Riesling. Rieslings can be very dry to a very sweet dessert wine. They carry a very fruity nose. Rieslings pair well with crab, shellfish and other fish. Try a nice light garlic butter sauce.
The next grape is the Pinot Grigio. Pinot Grigio is a very light and approachable wine that offers a refreshing after taste. Try with smoked Atlantic salmon, a nice chicken salad, mushroom and scallop risotto, or a pasta dish with a light cream sauce.
Sauvignon Blanc is a very versatile white wine that can be combined with any of the other white wine foods. Particularly this wine should be pared with asparagus, chicken salad, chilled fruit soups, and fresh tilapia or other light fish.
The last wine grape I will cover is the chardonnay grape. Chardonnay is the boldest of the whites. It will go well with a chicken dish with cream sauce, shrimp with a heavy cream sauce, crab cakes, oysters, smoked salmon, and any heavy cream sauce dish.

This was a very brief overview with pairing food with wine. So hopefully now you can go to a restaurant and choose wisely. My recommendation is to order your meal first then your wine. For tips on how to taste wine check out my other articles.

19) My First Novel

When I was so very young,
and went to San Francisco
I first saw a book that interested me,
about a couple, in Italy-
(fiction or truth, I’ll never know,
but it was my first novel I read:
page to page, all the way through),
around 100-pages or so.
I loved reading it, guns and guts,
escape and all kinds of things,
with a little romance, that rang.
I laughed and smiled-and
to my dismay-I read the book
almost everyday, and
wondered what would be next:
only to discover, I was near the end.

20) No Flowers for Vietnam

(A War, once upon a time-’71)

Back then, when I was young
everyone I knew went to Vietnam;
kissed their wives, and off we went:
with sweat and fear we faced the quest.
They were true men, they had pride
and many, many of us died….

I don’t know a tune, so soft, so strong,
for a country at war that knew no wrong:
we swallowed deep our stench and noise,
like wild boars, in another’s backyard….

We were back then, like unripe pears,
sheep ready for the slaughter, and the
rich stayed home and reaped the flowers.

21) The Poet’s Boots

I shall wear the poet’s boots,
shall march and bellow,
keep my words bent.
The fame of my name
shall go drumming on
over all the world,
and then.

And that wonder
for which I burn
will soon begin,
and drive me forth
never to return.

The blight that drags at me
until Heaven’s gate,
He has heard my voice
my plea, read my joggled heart,
(ever and again). God!
who knows me so well,
(says), and Christ,
the Prince of Heaven,
“Put on the boots of the poet
and never look back again!”

#1755

22) Joseph, God’s Silent Partner
(Joseph ‘The papa’; Husband to Mary)

Quiet-simplicity, like God, so Joseph was:
Allowing Joseph to hear, God’s whispers;
Just a very simple man, Joseph was,
Like God, he said very little: why?
Because God is showing us (through Joseph)
Actions and prayer (not simply words), with
Silence, was his strength (he walked the walk,
And threw away the talk); thus, he was able to
Be the earthly papa, for Christ; the holy family
Of the Universe…!

#1756

Note: A man is to serve, God first and then his family, wife, etc., God gives or gave us a man to follow, Joseph, a father figure, Joseph, likened to God the Father. Even Jesus, addressed him as ‘papa’. Thus, we should follow his example, silent, strong, prayerful, and wise; we can listen and hear God’s voice, the quieter one is, the more he will hear God’s whispers. Joseph worked with his hands, was not afraid to work, we should be like him. He was the guardian of the Redeemer.

The world has changed and the needs of the college student have changed as well. It used to be that plenty of paper, pencils, notebooks and highlighters were all that you needed to be prepared for college. But in today’s fast paced technological world much more is needed to be successful.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Laptop Computer

Today’s college student needs the portability of a laptop, the desktop just doesn’t cut it anymore. But, many of the features included in a laptop are not absolutes and are negotiable. Different students will require different memory, graphics and accessories.

One feature that is negotiable is the memory. In most cases, the standard ram and hard drive will be more than sufficient for the average college student. However, if your major is in computer graphics or programming you might require a more advanced memory system. Call your advisor or someone in the department and ask about your computer needs.

The following are features that you definitely want to include in your system:

  • DVD R/RW
  • CD-RW
  • Wireless
  • 4 USB Ports

Preferred brands: Compaq, HP, Dell and Toshiba.

Recommended stores: Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, Circuit City and online.

Price Range: $499 - $1299

1 or 2 - 1GB USB jump drives 2.0

Although the USB jump drives don’t have to be 1 GB, it’s a nice size to begin with and having two will be very handy. The USB drives are going to be very useful for transferring data from one place to another and will allow you to take information without taking the whole computer.

Preferred brands: Lexar, PNY

Recommended stores: Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, and Circuit City.

Price Range: $39 - $79

MP3 Player

An mp3 player is one of the newest study tools and has many uses. The most important use is the ability to record lectures and then listen to them anywhere. You can also download music, data and videos. The possibilities are endless.

Preferred brands: Sansa, Apple iPod, Samsung, Phillips and Zune.

Recommended stores: Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, and Circuit City.

Price Range: $39 - $349

Note: If the budget can afford it, go for one that can download video.

Scientific Calculator

If you are going to study science, mathematics or pre-med you will need a scientific graphing calculator. Don’t waste your time with plain calculators or other scientific calculators. You need a graphing calculator. The best graphing calculators for the money are the TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus.

Recommended stores: Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, Staples and ebay.

Price Range: $79 - $199

The above items will also require certain accessories such as blank CD’s and DVD’s. You will want to get a good laptop case or carrier for transporting your computer. Also, you may want to get a laptop mouse if you have trouble using a touch pad.

Most of all get a computer and MP3 player that you will feel comfortable with and enjoy. These are major purchases and you will be using them for some time to come.

So, go shopping, have fun, pick the computer that’s right for you and enjoy your purchase.

Sexual abuse is a terrible topic. Parents fear it and when it is mentioned, we feel sick at the thought of it.

The numbers are astonishing. reports vary from 1 in 3 to 1 in 4 girls being sexually abused before they are 18 and 1 in 6 to 1 in 8 boys. Which means that we all know a lot of children, adults who have been sexually abused.

This abuse can vary from one-time inappropriate touching to rape and/or long term sexual abuse or incest. Most often the abuse happens by someone the child knows.
Victims regularly deal with the impact for decades, many times for life.
That is not just a statement, people really deal with it all those years, it impacts their relationships, their self confidence, their ability to make contact with people.

Who are the people who do this?
It can vary from a family member to a first date, and from a teacher or a priest to the friendly neighbor. It can be an ignorant teen or a smooth adult who knows exactly what he or she is doing.
Sexual abuse is often multi-generational, with victims who become abusers, not knowing ways to break the cycle.

What are signs to notice whether this may be going on for your child?
www.stopitnow.org and www.protectkids.com give quite clear information you can access readily.
Knowing your child and their normal behavior and seeing changes in that is one clear key in all of it.
I recommend having a look at these sites, so you are better prepared to see more clearly.

Can we prevent it?
Education and a solid open relationship with your child are two building blocks you can easily apply in your own life.
By speaking about sexuality, in age appropriate ways, you will create awareness for your child.
You can help them by teaching what is ok and what not. What to do when someone is trying to get them to do something that she or he knows now isn’t “right”.

It also means teaching, talking about sexuality with your older kids as they start dating.
They need to know what is ok and not.
How to respect boundaries and that “no” is indeed “no”, whatever the no is about.
Boys and girls need to learn about the boundaries and yes, about the often life long effects if your cross them unwanted.

Whether we like it or not, advocate abstinence or not, kids do have sexual contacts.
And they need to be prepared to deal with the tension, the expectations and all the stories others tell.
And feel that it is ok to say “no” when they want to, feel or think confused, doubt whether this is ok.
And it is not just about intercourse. The boundary is where they are at. Touching can be unwanted just as much and the effects just as long term.

Key is that you talk about it early and regularly. I.E. If you talked about it when they were four or seven, they will need to hear it again and differently later. By talking about it earlier, you create a basis of trust and openness, so they can come back to you later.

Teach them about signs in adults who may be potentially inappropriate, too, as you can find on the previously mentioned sites.
As to teaching your children about sexuality, there are many different ideas about that.
Your own community, fitting with your values and views likely has information, too. This information can vary from liberal sources to websites from churches and other religious communities.

For me the most important part is that you face it and talk about it.
Prepare your child, so they can prevent it, as much as they can.
Because if they don’t know what is ok or not, they won’t know whether they dealing with abuse.
And if it happens, believe them, support them and love them as much as you can. They will need you to, to overcome the pain, the unjust thought that they are to blame. And to work through it in a way that it can be a horrible event, not a life time burden.

You can do your part.
Please do.
So they don’t have to deal with it later.

Though most people don’t think about it, having a background check done on yourself can be one of the smartest financial, lawful and emotionally constructive things that you can do. If you plan to apply for a job, get car insurance, or you plan to move into a new home, you can count on others running these reports on you to decide upon who you are. Many look over more than just your criminal background. Some will be thoughtful of your ability to pay bills based on the type of person you are as affirmed on your driver’s record. No matter if it makes sense to you or not, the object in mind is to present yourself in the best possible way to all of these individuals.

One of the leading things you should go into is what could be on your background checks that you wouldn’t want there. Often, mistakes are made when facts are entered into computers by people. Just a flip of your social security number can report bad things that were meant for someone else on your report. Or, another common error is that something that happened to you quite a long time ago is still having an effect on your report although it should have been removed. Sometimes, mistakes just happen and aren’t taken care of quickly enough. One mistake like this causes numerous issues for you for ages and ages.

What To Look Out For

There are actually several types of reports that you ought to generate on yourself to unearth what they have to say about you. Here are a few to be aware of.

- A criminal background check helps to clarify if you’ve been arrested, charged or prosecuted for criminal activities. These can affect the type of work you can apply for as well as the loans that you can dig up. State and federal background checks are a must.

- Your driver’s license report is another very important report to perform on yourself. You want to know if there are any errors there that could possibly influence your insurance rates or even worse, your ability to go after work that requires driving.

These two reports are the most noteworthy to generate. Another to consider is that of your credit report. It will present you with the reassurance that there isn’t anything on these reports that can interfere with your way of living and your future.

Cheating Wives - The Hard-Hitting Reality

If like other men, you’re facing the tragedy of cheating wives, I appreciate your effort to consider solutions despite your distress. In an effort to find answers about your wife’s affair, take a moment to examine infidelity from a different perspective.

Let’s look at cheating wives and infidelity as a hard-hitting symptom.

If you’re running a high fever, and you feel ill, you may think, “I’m not well; something’s wrong.” Your fever, coughing, and sneezing are the symptoms of a cold, or worse, the flu.

Your doctor may recommend something to feel better, like Tylenol to bring down the fever. But, your doctor cannot cure the flu itself. It’s the flu virus that’s the source of all the bad feelings, fever, and coughing.

How does this apply to cheating wives? Well, the cheating is like the high fever that makes the flu feel so wicked. The reason she’s cheating is the complex virus itself. Infidelity, then, is the hard-hitting symptom that gets all the attention.

You can never take enough Tylenol to make the flu go away. These quick-fix medications only treat the symptoms. Similarly, if you focus on just the affair and ignore the truth and history of your marriage, you’ll fail to diagnose the real problems facing your partnership.

What does this mean in infidelity terms? If you merely see cheating as the issue, then you’re not even scratching the surface of your marriage troubles. There are much bigger problems lying beneath the affair. There are layers of past pain, lack of intimacy, arguments, and more that all contributed to the end result of infidelity.

Affairs have a blinding effect on the entire relationship. The biggest problem with cheating wives is that the infidelity overshadows everything up until now. All the other great moments, sad times, and events that your marriage is built upon become obsolete. The affair itself suddenly becomes an obsession, and the only thing that matters.

It’s like being angry at your fever, but never saying to yourself “I have the flu, that’s why I’m sick.” In other words, how much longer will you ignore that your marriage has a virus?

A common problem is that many people end their marriages suddenly when their spouse has an affair. Infidelity is the deal-breaker. Consequently, the marriage and the relationship never get mended. Couples don’t take the time to notice what really happened. Husbands and wives don’t heal. They walk away angry and hurt. The union itself, your perspectives, the red flags, the incidents that pecked away at your marriage, and all the potentially solvable dilemmas, never get attention.

When you first received your diamond and whatever setting it came in, it was shiny and sparkly and full of fire. However, as the days or weeks or months have gone by it has slowly been accumulating a residue and causing it to dull. Everyday, in fact, your diamond will collect dust, oils from your skin and all kinds of other dirty grime that erodes its luster.

In order to help your diamonds retain their brilliance it’s important to clean them and keep them clean. It only takes a few minutes to bring them back to their original beauty and with a little care it’s easy to keep them that way.

Tips For Cleaning Your Diamonds

1.-When cleaning your diamonds, use a small brush that has soft bristles. Eyebrow and lipstick brushes work great. Soak the brush in bowl of warm water that has been mixed with a mild detergent, or, your jeweler will often provide excellent diamond cleaner when you make your purchase.

2.-Immerse your diamond jewelry in the water and detergent solution. Slowly and while your diamonds are still immersed, brush your diamonds with the soft bristles of the brush.

3.-Make certain you have completely brushed the diamond and then rinse it completely clear of any soap or suds that may remain. An easy way to do this if you are cleaning multiple pieces of jewelry is to place them in a kitchen strainer with small holes and then run them under the faucet.

4.-Finally, using a cloth that is lint free pat them dry. Good cloths for this purpose are the kinds that opticians supply with new glasses, or cloths supplied by the jeweler where you purchased your diamond.

If you find yourself needing to clean your diamonds quite frequently, and if your jeweler did not supply a diamond cleaning kit, you will probably want to purchase a kit designed specifically for cleaning diamonds. Typically these kits come with a ready-made solution, brush and a strainer for dipping your jewelry.

When selecting a commercially produced cleaner be sure to read the label and ensure that it is safe to clean your particular diamond item with it. Some cleaners are better than others for particular purposes and some cleaners may also cause damage to your diamond or the setting it is in.

Finally, if you are in need of a more serious method of cleaning diamonds you may want to look into the purchase of an ultrasonic diamond cleanser. These are machines that clean your diamond via high-frequency turbulence and can complete the cleaning process in a matter of minutes.

To keep your diamonds sparkling longer after you have cleaned them, try to avoid touching them with your bare fingers or any type of oily substances as these will again leave a residue on your diamond and re-attract all of the dirt and grime you have just cleaned off. Of course, if your diamonds don’t get dirty, you won’t have an excuse to clean them.

Auto Transport Guide For A Smoother Transition

In the past, especially during The Great Depression, when people across the United States countryside were faced with no jobs or money they loaded up all of their belongings and headed out West. People would pack up all of their precious household goods, put it into their vehicle and be on their way. This was an era where people moved everything themselves as they headed off towards their new direction. Today, this moving solution seldom works. People have much bigger homes, busier schedules and are not able to move all of their belongings themselves. This is why moving companies have become so convenient. Moving companies make moving more comfortable and stress free for people as they prepare to live in their new home.

Some families, though, realize that when they go to move their number of vehicles exceeds the number of household drivers. There is a simple and easy solution to this perplexing dilemma. Auto transport companies will relocate your vehicle for a fee. These companies are equipped with state of the art carriers capable of shipping several vehicles at once, safely and quickly.

When you first contact an auto transport company you will need to have the following information at hand: what city you will be traveling from and where is your final destination, how many vehicles do you wish to transport, what dates do you have in mind for the departure and pick up of your vehicle, what is the make and model of the vehicle being transported, do you require door to door service, has your vehicle been changed in any way. If your vehicle has been changed in any way, such as a lift kit, you may have to pay an oversize fee.

It is wise to book your request in advance. Auto transport companies appreciate it if you book your request two weeks prior to your departure date. Most companies offer an immediate pick up option but you will pay extra for this service. It is important to remember that delivery and pick up dates are not guaranteed. If you would like the dates to be guaranteed you will be asked to pay an extra fee. The easiest and most valuable strategy is to be organized. This will create less hassle for you and the auto transport company.

The grace period between the pick up and delivery of your vehicle can vary depending on whether or not you picked a guaranteed delivery date. Also, the weather can cause changes in pick up and delivery dates. Usually depending on where a person lives and where they are moving to the window of time is 3 days.

When you are choosing an auto transport company there are a few things to look for. Make sure that the company is licensed and bonded. Ask for and check the company’s Department of Transportation license number. Also, check with your local Better Business Bureau to find out how the company rates. You can see how the company deals with customers and any disputes they may have had. In doing this, you are ensuring that you are dealing with a reputable auto transport company. This will save you one less worry and headache during your moving process.
