Working at Home is Not for Everyone

One of the most difficult aspects of working at home is to really focus on what needs to be done for the business. There are so many other things that need to get done, like yard work, laundry, and child care that some days you realize the day is gone and you did not get anything done for your business.

How can you work at home and focus on your business when there are interesting things to watch on television, or snow to shovel off the driveway, or the phone is constantly ringing?

Some people are not able to work at home, and the only choice for them is to get a small office somewhere away from home as soon as they can afford it. But for those who could get work done, there are some things they can do to minimize distractions.

First, set a certain time each day when you will focus on your business. Let the family know that this is your time to work and that you must not be disturbed.

That can be hard for children to understand, especially young children. One woman was able to make a game of it.

She told her children that if they let her focus on making sales calls from her home office, that every time she made a sale she would put a quarter in a jar. When there were enough quarters in the jar, the entire family would go out for pizza or to a movie.

That idea worked great for her. It was a reward for the entire family. It got to the point where the children could hardly wait for their mom to go into her office and make some calls.

But what do you do with a phone that hardly stops ringing. You don’t want to miss a call that might be your child trying to get a hold of you for an emergency.

The simple solution is to get an answering machine or voice mail. That will take care of 99% of the calls.

For family emergencies make sure your children and spouse know your cell phone number, and then keep your cell phone with you. Also, let them know that during your work hours they should only call for emergencies, the same as they would do if you had an office job.

Neighbors and friends can pose problems, too. They often think that because you are home you must be free to be involved in all sorts of activities or to chat.

This can be one of the hardest things to deal with, but you must somehow make them understand that you are working at home and that you are not retired. Most people can understand that, especially today when more and more people are working at home.

Basically, it takes a certain kind of person to be able to work at home. Not everyone can do it. You have to be able to view it as if you were going to an office job and be able to diligently guard your work time.

You have to be able to forget all the other things that need to be done around the house and focus strictly on what needs to be done to grow your business for a certain number of hours every work day. Animals As Book Characters - “But Animals Can’t Talk”

Why do authors for children so often tell stories with animals as the characters? After all, all stories are about human desires or intentions or deceptions, whether the characters are people or anthropomorphised (human-like) animals.

It is partly because they are a delight to draw. Beatrix Potter kept numerous pets, and did actually dress up her rabbits in little jackets as models for Peter and the rest of them. But she was certainly aware of the irony of what she was doing. Several of her stories depend on the actual clothes the animals wear, including Tom Kitten in which she notes, despite their mother dressing them in “elegant uncomfortable clothes” that “they had dear little fur coats of their own”. Anthony Browne talks about the pleasure of drawing gorilla faces — they can have the same expressions as human ones, but are much more fun to draw, with creases and bumps.

Many of the traditional tales told to both children and adults, before universal literacy, feature animals. Think of Aesop’s fables, Grimm’s story collections (”The Bremen Town Musicians” for instance) or “Little Red Riding Hood” (Perrault). Then there are the English ones like “Puss in Boots”. It is almost a staple of traditional stories that animals can think and talk - they often wear clothes as well. So anthropomorphism has a long history, and remains a staple of the picture book diet today.

And children enjoy animal stories. They even enjoy the level of irony in the human-ness, once it occurs to them. On the other hand, adults often bring their own level of humour to children’s books. Recently I have read a critic on Richard Scarry’s work, saying that children are amused at the incongruity of a large animal like a hippo riding a bike. Here I disagree. Children do find Scarry very funny, but it is the characters’ numerous accidents that amuse. After all, a hippo riding a bike is really no more incongruous than a cat doing so — both are completely unlikely. Occasionally at two, my son would query his favourite Scarry book “Why is a dog playing the guitar?” or “Turkeys can’t drive!” But he was considerably older (three and three months) when he suddenly realised, first to a tape of an animal song — “it’s really people. Because they can’t talk, can they? Animals can’t talk.”

It seems that children who live with pets are slower to articulate this fact. In most households, pets are addressed as if they could understand, and answers often made for them too. It must seem a small step to children used to this behaviour, and not at all surprising, when animals in books can talk and reason.

This realisation often happens through a contrast. My daughter was three and a half when she first encountered Miffy at the Zoo (Dick Bruna). At the first reading, where the zoo animals address the rabbit Miffy, Rebecca laughed with delight — “Animals don’t talk!” — and found the whole story hilarious every time she heard it, from then on. This aspect is foregrounded by the contrast between Miffy (who always behaves exactly like a person), and the zoo animals which are not clothed, and should not have been able to talk.

There are various levels of anthropomorphism. The characters may look exactly like animals, but be able to think as humans, and even speak (the bears in McCloskey’s Blueberries for Sal). Or they may wear some clothes while still looking like the actual animals (Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten). Or they can be dressed and behave in every way like people, living in houses, going to school (Miffy, Browne’s Willie the Wimp and Russel Hoban’s Frances series are like this).

By making the characters animals, the story and its message are distanced, so don’t apply directly to the child. Sometimes this can act to the child’s advantage. At four my daughter had been squabbling with her friend Justin, and when he was to visit again, I referred to Best Friends for Frances - a favourite book at the time. “Frances’ best friend is a boy”. She responded scathingly “It’s different for animals”.

Mainly it is the delight that children feel when they encounter animals behaving as they themselves might. Anthropomorphised animal characters will be with us for a long time to come.

My book, Stories, Pictures and Reality: Two Children Tell (Routledge) is based on a reading journal kept intensively from birth until about age ten, then sporadically until the children left home at 18, dealing with both children, their reactions to books, and their interactions with each other. My son is the only male child who has been studied in this way — the other four parent-observer studies have all been of girls. Do all of your buddies have tons of money on WoW, while you’re left struggling to make anything? Are you in the higher levels, but find your gold few and far between? Or do you just want more gold, so you are the envy of all your friends?

There are a few hints for low levels, level 15-35, and even some higher levels below. You even grind with a few, meaning you level up as you’re raking in the gold.

How Low Levels Make Gold

If you’re character is just starting out, a little gold will go a long way. Taking up a profession is the first thing you should do - my personal favorite money maker is to take up either mining or herbalism along with skinning. Other players will pay quite a bit for these materials at the auction house.

With skinning be sure you kill everything that you can skin, and skin it all. The more you do it, the better you become. Any dead bodies of animals that haven’t been skinned you should skin.

Taking up first aid and fishing will help, too. Sell anything you don’t want, or don’t need - auction houses are great place to do just that, too, because things will sell better at an auction house then a vender (A lot better if you’re on a good server).

Middle Levels Makin’ Money

There’s a great place in Northwestern Westfall, along the cliff near a lone windmill with a tiny shack that’s perfect for grinding and grabbing stuff to sell. If you’re a tailor, this place could be your dream!

Although it’s best if you’re over level twenty two, you can go there at a lower level and do some serious grinding. There’s about six or seven Defias mobs, ranging from level 12 to 13, and almost all of them drop linen. What makes this place great is they re-spawn super fast, so you can just keep killing them.

Linen cloths can be made into bolts of linen, which can sell for quite at some auction houses, or you can turn the bolts into clothing, and sell that for a good bit. You get a great deal of experience, and for just a little work. The average linen drop is about 200-300 an hour, depending on the server and character level.

Up, Up, And Away!

For higher levels, a decent place to go is the Bad Lands. The rock elementals will sometimes drop Elemental Earth, which can sell for about 1g each - it’s easy to get 10 in one hour. They’re about level 37, so you can also gain a few levels while making money.

For high levels, head to Felwood, which is east of Darkshore. Withered Protectors and Warpwood shredders are found here - the protectors have a 5-10% chance of dropping major healing potions, which can sell for about 1g at most auction houses. They also drop high-level herbs that sell for up to 10g for a stack of twenty - this place is great for both leveling up, and making money.

Note: Gold, silver, and copper should always be made legally on WoW, and should never violate the EULA. Buying gold is one violation, and is never, ever acceptable.

Have fond memories of going around in games like Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance or Neverwinter Nights naked, slaying rats or any other low-level creatures? Well, you can do the same thing - or you can just run around naked screaming about a magic missile for an hour or two in Stormwind. Not that I’ve done that, you know, but anyway!

Getting your World of Warcraft character naked just takes the basic knowledge of the game setup, and a few empty slots in your bag. If you don’t have the empty slots, you can sell anything you don’t need, or place items in the bank for retrieval later. You could also ask a friend to hold the items for you, if you’re in a group, but be careful - you might never see those items again.

Open your backpack or bag (Hotkey B for your backpack, hotkey’s F8 - F11 for other bags), and then open your character menu (Hotkey C). Left click once on a piece of your clothing that you wish to remove - pants, shirt, shoes, anything - and move your curser to an empty slot in your bag. Next to your curser should be a smaller image of your item - if not, you need to click again. Just left click the empty slot to place the item in your bag. Do that for every piece of clothing you have on you.

And tah-dah. You’re naked. There’s really not much to it - unless you want to look good while naked. Then there’s something much more to this.

Your attractiveness depends on what race you are, and if you’re male or female. Here’s a low-down on how attractive your WoW character will be when he or she is actually naked.

Alliance
Night Elves
Hands down, the most attractive race of the Alliance, the Night Elves look great both clothed and naked. There’s not too much to say about the naked male Night Elf, but the female has a slightly off body shape, and the ribs protruding not only don’t fit with the stomach, but give the torso an awkward look. Still, you have to admit, the Night Elves can really get their dance on.

Humans
The humans aren’t too bad looking, as long as you keep their clothes on. Both the female and male are a little on the - how you say, chunky side, and they do not wear flattering underwear. Not very appealing to the eye, but somehow guys who play women and dance naked in Goldshire still get stuff. Hey, we all have to make a living, right?

Dranei
The Dranei, one of the new races that came with the Burning Crusade expansion, are the ugliest Alliance race. No question about it. The men are wide and brutish, and the women - well, their legs are just disgusting. Although, while I have nothing good to say about the men, the women’s facial features are rather attractive, in their own, blue way, and their bodies are much better sculpted then the gnomes or dwarves.

Dwarves
The dwarves are short-ish, squat creatures that aren’t at all attractive or appealing to the eye. Most male dwarves have long beards which take away from the rest of their face, and the choices for women’s facial structure or hair aren’t very nice at all.

Gnomes
I have the same complaint about the gnomes as the dwarves - their shorter, though, and even less attractive naked. No one, and trust me, no one, wants to see a naked gnome dance. I’ll leave it at that.

Horde
Blood Elves
A beautiful race! The blood elves were the other race to come with the expansion, and they are the most attractive race in the entire game, no questions asked. Slim, sleek bodies framed by a smooth, visually appealing face and surprisingly nice hair styles. Their jump is smooth and fluent, with a graceful landing style, and they look the best naked, by far.

All Other Horde Races
These races aren’t something that you want to see naked. The Undead, Orcs, Tauren, and Trolls should never take their clothes off, ever.

Ever.

In my years helping small business start-ups, I’ve seen the same mistakes repeated over and over. Many of these mistakes are the same ones I made with my first business two decades ago. They’re really easy to avoid for start-up entrepreneurs who are willing to learn the secrets and short cuts of other successful entrepreneurs. With each, I’ve included the rationale behind the mistake and how you can avoid it. Depending on where you are in the start-up process, use this information to avoid unnecessary struggle, wasted time and money.

1)No business plan

Before you start your business, you need a simple, written business plan, even if you’re solo. The plan should explore:

Your products and services

Your pricing

Your projected year one gross revenues

All your projected expenses

Your market research

Your marketing plan and budget

Your projected gross profit (profit before taxes)

You need these plans so you’re in control of your business; otherwise your business is being run on default and you end up spending money without a clear strategy. Many small business owners don’t have written plans because they think writing them will take too much time. The ones who do, succeed. Why not join them?

2)Under funding

Even if you’re starting a home-based business, you need some money to start up. If you plan on hiring employees, purchasing inventory and leasing space, it’s obvious you need seed money, but you may underestimate how much.

For a small service home based business, you’ll need office furniture and supplies, marketing and branding materials, a strategically planned website, some technology (software) and a healthy marketing budget. If you’re bricks and mortar, you’ll also need money for expenses like equipment, supplies, six month’s rent, payroll etc.

To avoid underfunding, refer back to your business plan. How much money do you need? Funding is available from many sources: family, friends, personal savings, credit cards, home equity, independent small business loans, the SBA and through Prosper.com. Figure out how much you’re willing to invest in yourself. What are you telling others if you’re not willing to invest in your own business? If you set a budget and develop a smart plan for how you’ll spend that money to launch your business, you’ll get the results you want.

The next mistake is made often by under funded start-ups.

3)Amateurish marketing materials

Don’t hire the first graphics or web designer you meet. Worse yet, don’t entrust your business’s marketing image to high school or college students because you’re trying to save money. How you’re perceived in the world will depend heavily on your business graphics, logo and website.. It’s important to think about how you want your business to be perceived, what colors will reflect that image, and what marketing materials you really need. Certainly you need business cards. But, do you really need letterhead and envelopes? Not everyone does. Do you need a brochure? Uniforms? Signs? How will all of this work together to present a unified image.

The key again is planning. Look carefully at the work of any graphic designer you’re considering using. See if you really connect with it. Speak with a minimum of five professionals, comparing price and style before deciding. Ask for recommendations from other businesses that have a “look” you find appealing. Finally, don’t skimp on your marketing materials. They represent your business.

4)Wimpy Website

The wimpy website was usually done by a start-up web designer who may create something pretty and charge you very little. The website hangs out there in cyberspace collecting cyber dust and you end up disappointed because it’s not generating leads or sales.

You need to do a lot of research before beginning to build your website, like keyword and domain name research. Writing content that’s compelling to visitors and search engine optimized is key. Constructing a map of your website with all the navigation options well thought out is also important. I discourage clients from building their website until they understand the tactics that will make it a magnet for prospects, and a profit center in their business. I’m sure you don’t want to waste hundreds, even thousands of dollars on a website that doesn’t give you a return on investment.

5)Poor time management

We aim to become entrepreneurs because we want to be our own boss and be in control of our lives. But when we first start, we suddenly realize that no one but us is structuring our time each day. So many start-ups have told me that they work all week and don’t seem to get anything accomplished, or that they sit at their desks not knowing what to do next.

If you have a clear vision of where you want to be in a year and a detailed roadmap for how to get there, you just need to follow the directions! It’s easy to get distracted by daily tasks or new ideas and opportunities. Set aside time each week to review these opportunities to see if they serve your vision. Otherwise file them in an idea folder for the future and stay tightly focused on those priority activities that will grow your business now.

Be a smart start-up; get ahead of the curve by avoiding these discouraging and costly mistakes. You’ll experience less stress, reduce the first year learning curve, and increase the bottom line.
