Self-defense refers to actions taken by a person to stop another person from causing harm to one’s self, one’s property or one’s home. Self-defense is also a commonly understood legal term in United States law used to classify an act of violence as being justified against an unjustified assailant, and therefore deserving of little or no punishment.
While the debate regarding the use of firearms continues, other types of non-lethal self defense weapons are available for your protection. There are a number of self defense devices that you can legally use to protect yourself against an assault. If that doesn’t work, you may be able to use it as a weapon by hitting an assailant with it. Some flashlights come with alarms that can be set off during an attack. A great advantage of using a flashlight as a self defense weapon is that it can be easily carried in your car or in a tote bag and converted to a weapon when needed.

The most essential self-defense products for the home are ones that stop a burglar before they enter the home. A number of perimeter defense products discourage possible invaders before they enter your home.

• Motion, infrared alarms and lights are the first line of defense. One of the best alarms on the market are the “auto dial” phones. These phones have a motion alarm that triggers an automatic dial of any number you choose. Some even have a recording device that records the intruder.
• Door wedges and bars are also used to stop most intruders. These wedges brace against doors and windows, preventing intruders from opening the entrance to your home.
• A high risk home might use battery operated and wireless alarms that call the police. You can even purchase a motion sensor alarm that dispenses a UV dye, marking intruders so police can identify them later.
• Wireless alarms have become more popular recently because they are simple to operate, affordable, and portable. Apartment residents can easily use wireless, battery operated alarms and they can take it with them when they move. Just be sure to keep fresh batteries in them!

Trout are a very enjoyable species of fish to spend your time trying to catch. In this article, I’m going to discuss some tips that should help you catch more trout. When I speak of trout, I’m referring to the basic trout species that can be found throughout the United States. These species would include: Rainbow, Brown, Brook, Cutthroat, and Bull Trout. Although there are variations in temperament, colors, and size within these groups of trout, the methods for trying to catch them are similar. Below are some general trout fishing tips to help you catch more of any or all of the species listed above, especially in river and stream situations.

Size Matters - When it comes to trout fishing, the size of your gear and bait matter. In most trout fishing situations, ultra light to light gear and bait is the way to go. Unless of course you happen to be fishing for the monster Great Lakes visiting Brown Trout of the Midwest, in which case heavier gear will be necessary. I personally use a 5 foot ultra light rod and ultra light reel spooled with four for almost all of my trout fishing, and catch very large trout on a setup just like this. As far as hooks, the biggest I use for trout fishing with live bait is size 10. When it comes to lures, small lures are what you want to use as well. I personally don’t normally fish for trout with spinners and spoons that are bigger than ¼ ounce. And minnow-type plugs shouldn’t exceed four inches long, in my opinion when fishing for trout.

Clothing Matters - In river and stream situations when the angler is wading in an attempt to catch fish, the color of your clothing matters. Loud colors or even plain white, stand out and the fish will be able to see you. I always wear drab colors to blend in with the background as much as possible. Trout in rivers and streams can become vary wary of anglers, so not standing out works to the anglers’ advantage. Simply pick a t-shirt that’s brown or grey. As apposed to bright red or bright white.

Smell Matters - I’m not talking about the kind of deodorant you use. I’m speaking of the scent on your hands. All varieties of trout have a very sensitive sense of smell and can detect unnatural odors. For example, if you smoke, when you’re done with a cigarette your hands smell like an ashtray. This smell then transfers to whatever you touch (if you don’t believe me, just ask a non smoker if this is the case.) Therefore, when you touch the bait or lure to attach it to your hook or line, that scent gets on your bait! This will cost you a ton of bites. In most situations a trout will “sniff” the bait before biting it. If it stinks like an ashtray, there will be no biting. I suggest both grabbing a handful of weeds or dirt and rubbing it in your hands periodically, just in case any unnatural scants are on your hands. This simple tip will result in more bites.

Presentation Matters - Trout are a very intelligent species of fish. Whatever bait you chose to use must be presented in the most natural way possible. This is especially true with live bait. You want your bait to look as natural as possible. This is why I use a set of pre-tied gang hooks, because they enable me to present my live bait in an amazingly natural way. With trout in a river or stream situation, presentation matters as much as any other single aspect.

If you begin using these tips, you will start catching more trout. Actually, all I can promise is that you will get more bites, the setting of the hook, and actually fighting the trout, are in your hands. These tips will definitely help you get more bites, which is really what we’re all in search of, right?

Job Interview coming up? … Keep in mind that whether they know it or not, all Hiring Managers are looking for certain characteristics or “Behavioral Competencies.”

One of the most important is CONFIDENCE. Now, all of us have made mistakes in the past, and maybe all of your performance reviews have not exactly been “glowing,” but the point is not to live your life looking in the rear view mirror. If you know you have made mistakes, and you are working on improving yourself, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t move forward with CONFIDENCE and an EXPECTATION OF SUCCESS.

Review the following Behavioral Competencies with CONFIDENCE. Nobody is a super-person that exhibits all of these characteristics at 100%, but if you have ever worked any job then you have exhibited all of these characteristics to some degree. EMPHASIZE THE POSITIVE when you formulate your interview answers, and think of times on the job when you HAVE exhibited these characteristics — NOT times when you might have failed to.

What you want to demonstrate to the Hiring Manager

Courage / Persuasion: This is your ability to increase your determination to get the job done when you are faced with resistance or a difficult situation. Show the ability to move people towards a commitment to buy or act. Demonstrate that you are fair and nice, but also show that you are aggressive and may even sometimes intimidate others. Don’t be modest. Demonstrate confidence and the fact that you are not easily intimidated. Indicate the desire to influence the thinking of others. Show that you can gain agreement from others via logic, alternatives, and emotional appeals.

Beliefs / Ethics: This is your capacity to believe strongly in what you do and emphasize service. Indicate loyalty so that the Hiring Manager knows that you won’t quit after three months — or leave your clients hanging and out of the loop. This quality is key to the development of accounts and customer satisfaction. Show that you will act in terms of what is right. Demonstrate that you follow through and actually do what you say you will do.

Commitment: This is your capacity for becoming dedicated to your work. You should demonstrate a strong belief in what you do. Demonstrate that you are willing to make a sacrifice for people when appropriate because you are a COMMITTED person. Show a strong responsibility and commitment to not only the Hiring Manager and the company, but even more importantly, to customers and clients.

Work Orientation / Stamina: This is your capacity to handle mental intensity and hard work. Indicate the high tempo and speed at which you work, and your capacity for endurance. Show that you invest the TIME and ENERGY necessary to get the job done right the first time, consistently.

Interpersonal Skills / Charm: This is your capacity to know how and when to get things done with people. Show that you are outgoing and charming, and that you are especially effective in this regard when you have an objective in mind, or need someone to do something. Demonstrate that you have an intrinsic need to win the approval of others, fit in, and get along. Show that you have the ability to build quick relationships with people.

Discipline: Demonstrate that you have inner standards that make you both predictable and productive. Show that you enjoy the responsibility of planning and carrying out your own schedule. Indicate that you can motivate yourself to work on a task until completion.

Competitiveness: This is your drive to be better than others. Show that you like to compete and have the desire to win, and show the maturity of knowing how this benefits everyone.

Focus: This is your ability to determine what is important, set priorities for tasks, and maintain direction. Show that you understand how to set short and long-term objectives, and how to intelligently schedule these objectives so that you hit your goals and complete.

… When you formulate your interview answers, try to integrate at least two of the above competencies. Remember, confidence is the most important! Relax, deliver your best answer, use the above guidelines — and you WILL get HIRED!

When we live at a distance, we have to rely on closer family members, friends and neighbors to be aware of how our parents are doing. Suddenly we can be faced with the realization that loved ones are not getting along as well as in the past. All of a sudden some of the subtle changes that we had been aware of cause us to raise the question, “Is Mom or Dad safe to live at home?” “Are they still able to live independently?” “What can I do to help them manage at home?” We may be aware that loved ones are having problems with health, frailty, or mood.

We can watch for several things that will alert us to a change in functioning.
Be aware of:

1. Mail and bills are piling up.
2. The house is cluttered or unkempt.
3. Food in the refrigerator is uneaten or spoiled; food is left out on counters to spoil. You may notice a loss of weight.
4. There are signs that the stove has been left on; there may be burned patches on counters or pans that have been scorched.
5. Clothing is not clean or changed regularly. There may be a change in the way clothing is worn such as choosing inappropriate outfits or not dressing for the weather.
6. The person is not attending to their personal hygiene.
7. There are missed physician appointments and in general confusion about the time and date.
8. A parent calls at odd hours or several times a day and asks for help or seems upset, confused or agitated.
9. Medications are being mixed up, or they are not being taken as prescribed.
10. There is a loss of interest in activities or social involvement.
11. There have been a number of falls.
12. There is a problem with balance and walking. They rely on items of furniture or walls to support them as they move around the house.
13. There have been automobile accidents or reports by neighbors of unsafe driving.

You may hear statements like “I don’t know what I am supposed to do now” or “I’m confused”. You may notice repetition of questions and stories. All of these observations may be indicators that there are problems with mild memory loss or more pronounced problems related to dementia.

How do you decide what to do when you notice any of these signs?

Arranging for a thorough medical examination by a physician is an important first step. The physician may recommend that a more specialized medical evaluation be arranged and will help make the right connections.

Depending on the reason for the memory loss and confusion, plans should be put in place to ensure that matters of safety are addressed. When long term care is recommended by the physician, depending on other factors, involvement in an adult day program or a residential placement may be appropriate.

Erase the perm: Have you ever had a perm that you absolutely regretted? Well guess what it can be removed without any trace of it ever being there. The best part is you can fix it yourself and do it in less than the time it took to do the perm the first time. You see the main ingredient in most perms is ammonium thioglycolate. This is the stuff that is squirted onto the perm rods. During the perm process this chemical actually breaks the disulfide bonds (these are the bonds that control the shape of your hair) in your hair and they lose their natural form and reshape themselves to the perm rods, which is how you end up with a curl, then the neutralizer stabilizes the shape and makes it permanent, hence a perm.

So here is how you remove your unwanted perm. You simply saturate your hair with a perm solution with the same main ingredient as your original perm (like I said before it is usually thio) You are now applying it to your hair without any perm rods and simply combing it through, (keep coming it for approx 15 min or according to the manufacturers directions).

Now you are doing just the opposite as what your original perm did, you are breaking the bonds again but now you are reshaping them and making them straight. Follow with the neutralizer to stabilize the bonds, follow the rest of the manufactures directions for steps such as how long to let the neutralizer sit and to rinse out, and guess what you just got your straight hair back.

They rather get attention from the guy who is unique and rare. They want the guy who seems harder to get… a good catch or a “keeper.”

Formulating a plan

The keys that will make playing hard to get a huge success for you is patience and confidence. You must be patient and confident that your plan is going to work. Similar to a game of chess you have to think two or three moves ahead. So lets see how we can make women chase you.

The best way to see if a girl is interested in you is to give her your number after some friendly interaction. Casually say to her, “It was nice talking to you, Candice. Unfortunately, I have to go. Here’s my number. If you are not too busy, maybe you can give me a call sometime.”

Now you have got her thinking…

She is not quite sure if you like her because you did not directly asked her out, nor did you ask for her number; you were the one giving your number to her. Since she is so used to guys desperately begging for her number, you have put her in uncharted waters.

She will keep your number if she truly does like you and give you a call in the near future. Once you do get the phone call-and I know you will-you know that she is interested in you on some level… why else would she call you, right?

One thing to keep in mind is if the girl has not been on a date in a while, she will call you sooner rather than later. Otherwise, she will wait at least several days before calling.

So you may be asking yourself, “why would I give her my number? Why not take hers?” Well, when you play hard to get, you have to make her think a little. If you ask for her number and say that you want to go out with her in the future, she already knows that you like her and there is no challenge (she can have you anytime she chooses). Now the key is not to over do “playing hard to get.” When you hang out, for example, don’t keep playing hard to get… you have done that part successfully already. That is why she called you in the first place, and that is why she is ” just hanging out” with you. She needs to feel rewarded at some point or she will think you really don’t like her. Make her do the talking

When she talks, just listen carefully-just incase she asks you about it later. Show interest in what she is saying-even it is frivolous non-sense. Repeat anything that gets her emotional and that seems important to her. When you show that you care, she will appreciate your company that much more.
