Bad Credit Habits ‘Learned From Elders’

Lax attitude towards spending reflection of parent’s habits

Following a report into the borrowing beliefs of teenagers, an investment expert has said that children should be educated and not bullied into saving money if they are to avoid a life of bad debt.

Ben Yearsley, from Hargreaves Lansdown, said that the young people’s lax attitude towards spending and debt is probably a reflection of their parents’ habits.

His comments follow a survey from the Personal Finance Education Group (pfeg) that found the majority of teenagers in England have been or are in debt by the time they are 17-years-old and have a “worryingly laidback” approach to money.

Mr Yearsley said that the 1.25 trillion of personal debt among the adult population is a bad example to children, a fact that parents “need to think about” before making their children behave more responsibly.

“I don’t think it is necessarily about forcing children to save it’s educating and teaching them about what is going to be needed later in life,” he said.

Teenagers believe credit card debt does not need to be repaid

One of the most significant findings of the pfeg survey is that some teenagers think that credit card credit debt does not need to be repaid at all.

Experts are concerned that a lack of understanding on such matters will lead to a rise in individual voluntary arrangements and bankruptcies, which will impact on people’s ability to borrow credit in the future.

At least one in five consumers in the north-east face serious financial hardship because of bad debt, new research suggests.

22% of people in North East likely to declare insolvency

Debt consultancy Thomas Charles told the Observer that 22 per cent of people in the north-east are either ‘likely’ or ‘certain’ to declare to go insolvent in the near future. It said that 21 per cent owe more than 10,000 in unsecured credit, including personal loans, credit cards, student loans and overdrafts.

Also revealed by the firm is that 19 per cent of Londoners owe at least 10,000 in unsecured debt.

This is despite warnings from experts that severe, unaffordable debt often leads to people being refused credit in the future and can make it more difficult to take out a competitive mortgage.

Alliance & Leicester told the newspaper that the north-east is one of the most indebted areas of the country, with unsecured debt equivalent to 26.9 per cent to the average income.

Meanwhile, a study by Experian for the BBC has found that people in Manchester and Glasgow feel under more financial pressure than other Brits, while the south-west was dubbed the UK’s bankruptcy hotspot.

The outcome is feeling lethargic, possible slowing of your heartbeat and low blood pressure.

What you are really looking for is an increase in energy, feeling good and losing weight. This is the way it should be and it can be if you begin to exercise (increase in energy). How To Throw A Slumber Party For Pre - Teen Girls

Your daughter’s birthday is approaching and she has requested a slumber party. I can almost hear the anxiety in your voice, as you visualise loud music, incessant giggling and finding popcorn for weeks after the event. There is really no need to worry, as good organisation is the key to a successful party.

Steps to take …

Step 1: Tell your daughter how many friends she can invite and let her decide who they will be. Then send out the invites well in advance of the party, so that you have plenty of time to plan it properly.

Step 2: Have some music playing as the guests arrive and give them some time to chat together.

Step 3: Set up some glasses, fancy straws, cocktail umbrellas, fruit slices and cartons of juice in the kitchen. Have a competition to see who can make the most amazing fruit cocktail and give a prize for the best one.

Step 4: Divide the girls into teams and have a game of ‘Guess the Pop Star’ and ‘The Perfect Makeover’ and give prizes to the winning team.

Step 5: Put on your first DVD and serve hot dogs, chips and dips, pizza, popcorn and drinks.

Step 6: When you think it is getting late enough, you can gently coax the party guests up to the bedroom. Tell them that there will be a gift for them all in the morning, providing they keep the noise down.

Step 7: Have plenty of toast and juice waiting for your guests as they come down for breakfast.

Make a list of all the things you are going to need and make sure you get everything ready before the guests arrive.

Try to estimate how long the games and activities are going to last - this will help you to plan the party better.

With your guidance, let your daughter decorate her bedroom with balloons, fairy lights, ribbons, etc.

Set out some make up, hair accessories, beads and string in a suitably well-lit area in her room.

Plan out where all the sleeping bags are going to go and have them set up long before bedtime.

Issue some torches, to ensure that no one falls on top of anyone when rushing desperately to the loo in the middle of the night.

Diplomatically issue some ground rules before bedtime - after all you are responsible for other people’s children when they are in your care.

State the time you wish the guests to be dropped off and collected clearly on the invites.

State on the invites that everyone is required to bring a sleeping bag and pillow.

Have a few plastic aprons available for messy games, in case anything gets on someone’s best clothes.

Finally, don’t forget to have a camera or camcorder ready!

Father Brown and the Little Irish Priest

“It’s not that we don’t have enough scoundrels to curse; it’s that we don’t have enough good men to curse them.” - G. K. Chesterton

I love words.

I love the way they can flow and twist and wind themselves together into a thought or an image. Maybe it’s the Irish in me, but I do know that part of my love for the words of poetry, stories, and philosophical thought can be pinned on one dear little Irish priest…Father Cunningham.

It was the 50’s and I attended St. John’s Parochial school in Warrington, Florida, a small community which lay between Pensacola and the huge naval air station, NAS Pensacola, where my father, and many of my friend’s fathers worked.

As part of the good Catholic education I was supposed to be getting, one of the priests was tapped to come over to class regularly and give us some religious education. I don’t know what the Lord was thinking, but he sent us Father Cunningham.

Father Cunningham was, as the Irish (at least those in movies like “The Quiet Man”) say, “a dear little man”. He was, of course, small, with an unruly shock of black hair, and a perpetual smile. Everyone, including the nuns, loved him dearly. At that time, I couldn’t understand why they would shake their heads and smile a little sadly when they learned that Father Cunningham would be the one coming “for religion” on a given day.

They didn’t seem to be happy about it!

On the other hand, we loved it, as Father Cunningham knew a million stories, and, like a good Irishman, was ever prepared to regale us with tales of leprechauns, the banshee, and the black coach…not to mention a myriad of other characters that nobody else ever bothered to tell us about!

Of all the characters I waited for, Father Brown was the best!

Father Brown was a fictional priest/detective created by the great Gilbert Keith (G. K.) Chesterton, a prolific and wide ranging author whose work was characterized as much by his free-wheeling, often acerbic, style of writing and witty opinionating as it was by its diversity, hidden humor, and depth of thought.

Father Cunningham knew all the Father Brown mysteries and loved to share them with us. Fortunately for the nuns they were written as short stories. He would, with a beautiful Irish brogue and flair for the tale, take us down streets and alleys in foreign cities we had never heard of (or had forgotten about after the bell rang or the test was over), and introduce us to adults we had never known before…nor had we seen them in that light.

I hated school with all the passion of my young heart, but I soared when Father Cunningham came to class, and I could hardly wait to hear the next adventure of Father Brown.

As I look back these 50 years, I am able to see the impact that one small Irish priest had on my entire future.

A year or two later, in a library, I stumbled across a book that had the words “Father Brown” on its spine. It also had the word “Chesterton”. I took the book and read it cover to cover over the next few days. I devoured all the Father Brown mysteries and moved on to all the other mysteries on either side. I read about Sherlock Holmes, Bulldog Drummond, Simon Templar (the Saint), the Lone Wolf, Mr. Moto, and Dr. Fu Manchu. When I had made a dent in all the mysteries and hungered for something else, I read the westerns. I started with Zane Grey and went through western story after western story, acquiring an admiration for Hopalong cassidy (the real one, not the movie one made famous by Bill Boyd), and Hashknife Hartley and his sidekick, Sleepy Stevens, along the way.

From there, I moved to Science Fiction and eventually became acquainted with the works of Heinlein, Asimov, and others too numerous to mention.

Somewhere, I discovered G. K. Chesterton had written many things other than Father Brown mysteries, and I began to read anything of his I could find and this lead me to the essay. Essays led to poetry and philosophy, and by the time my high school teacher exposed me to Shakespeare, I was ready! These readings did not lead only to the dusty shelves full of what could be considered “literature”, but also led me to the output of modern writers.

From fiction I moved to non-fiction and, wanting to know more about myself and my fellow travelers upon this earth, I uncovered the likes of Dale Carnegie and Napoleon Hill and dipped into such esoteric areas as meditation and yoga. I taught myself speed reading and tried to read my way through lists of great books.

I cannot credit Father Cunningham with my love of books, as my parents began taking me to the Pensacola library on a regular basis before I could read. In those days it was still in Old Christ Church on the edge of what is now Seville Square in Pensacola. The floors were wood, and the stereopticon with the collection of slides was the first thing I headed for when we entered.

Nor did Father Cunningham teach me to love adventure, romance, God or my homeland, but he led me to a love of words and the thoughts of men and women both great and simple. All these thoughts and opinions and stories and poems have helped to make the happy, healthy, usually well-balanced 62 year old man I am today. Almost any simple phrase or common event can send me into the corridors of my mind where an untold number of tales and thoughts await to intrigue or amuse me. No high speed movie car chase or thriller plot can set my blood racing as easily and completely as one simple passage, “‘Come, Watson, come!’ he cried. ‘The game is afoot…’”

It was years later, by the way, that I came to realize one other thing as well. The nuns need not have worried. By telling us the Father Brown mysteries, Father Cunningham introduced us to the concept of good and evil and was actually using these stories as morality plays to make points in ways that we could absorb into our young beings. The “learning” would come later.

The Elusive Blood Pressure Symptom

Did you know there is no one specific symptom that can identify high blood pressure, and that it
is the results of high blood pressure that produce symptoms? Most people do not realize the only
way you can find out if you suffer from high blood pressure is to have a blood pressure reading
taken.

Blocked Arteries

High blood pressure is caused when blocked arteries fail to deliver enough amounts of blood
carrying nutrients to every living organism within the human body. Such blockages cause arteries
to shrink in diameter. It is much like when a fuel line in your car is clogged by dirt or debris,
preventing fuel from reaching its destination. And as with a car with a clogged fuel line, a blood
vessel that is blocked or clogged will fail to transport the necessary amount of oxygenated blood
to its destination. Pressure inside the artery walls forces the heart to pump harder to get that
blood where it needs to go. The harder the heart muscle has to pump blood, the higher your blood
pressure will rise. If left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke and
coronary heart disease.

So what do you do if there is no particular high blood pressure symptom to watch out for? How
do you know what to do to prevent high blood pressure related conditions? The first thing is to
get your blood pressure checked regularly. Do not be fooled into thinking that young, healthy
people do not suffer from high blood pressure. High blood pressure can strike at any age, though
most often the condition occurs in older people, or those who are overweight.

Ethnic Groups

Some ethnic groups are at a higher risk for high blood pressure because of genetics, so be on the
safe side. Blood pressure can be checked easily with the help of a blood pressure monitor or cuff.
A reading will only take a few minutes and is the only way to find out if you have high blood
pressure or not. While we have days when we are nervous or tense, high blood pressure that lasts
more than a day or two should prompt you to visit your doctor.

People sometimes feel dizzy or short of breath. But these symptoms are not from high blood
pressure by itself, but the resulting damage caused by high blood pressure. Often, smoking also
contributes to high blood pressure, as does a high fat diet and lack of exercise. If you regularly
experience shortness of breath, light-headedness or feel as if your heart is pounding for no
obvious reason, go get your blood pressure checked.

Remember, there is no readily identifiable symptom of high blood pressure, and it will take a
blood pressure reading to discover what your blood pressure is. You owe it to you and your heart

Appreciation And Gratitude - Adopting A New Mindset

All right, I admit it. I have taken many things in my life for granted. I awaken each morning, set my coffee maker, and sit down in my favorite chair to read a great book. I shower, get dressed, eat breakfast and begin my workday. I work all day, somehow find time to workout, spend a little time with my wife, watch a little television, and then fall asleep. The next day I do the same thing all over again.

But, wait. Let me back up for one moment. Did I just mention appreciation and gratitude? Who has time for that? Well, we all do. I’m convinced that most of us live each day of our lives not fully appreciating what we truly have. It doesn’t have to be this way, however. All it takes is focus. Take a few moments each day to appreciate and be grateful for what is around you.

Let’s try this again. I awaken each morning grateful for the day which is ahead of me. I give thanks and appreciate my health, my ability to work and earn an income, and my ability to sleep in a warm and cozy bed. I set my coffee maker and savor two cups of coffee while enjoying one of my favorite hobbies: reading success literature. I shower, eat breakfast, and go to work. Now, I am blessed to work from my home. So, I make the 10-foot commute to my home office to begin my work for the day. I love what I do. And, having the flexibility to set my own schedule and earn what I choose is a blessing. I’m blessed to workout whenever I choose to do so in my home gym. I appreciate the time that I have with my wife. In fact, spending time with her each evening is the best part of my day. I fall asleep knowing that life is good. I am grateful for the day I had and I appreciate the opportunities that tomorrow brings.

Doesn’t that second paragraph describing my typical day sound better? What’s different? I’m living, truly living, my life by appreciating and being grateful for each day given to me. We don’t have to experience a great success to be appreciative. Appreciate the small things and everything falls into place. The same is true for you. Improve your life today by appreciating the small things in your life.

As we appreciate and are grateful for things in our lives everything begins to make sense. We begin to attract more into our lives because we already appreciate what the universe has given to us. We shift our focus to the things we want instead of focusing upon what we do not have. This small shift focusing on appreciation and gratitude will go a long way in developing your attitude and vision. We are all creatures of habit. We take many things in this life for granted.
