Simplified Work - Making Your Best Contribution

If you really want to grow your business you are going to have to answer a single question that almost no struggling entrepreneur ever asks themselves. You want to know what it is? Of course you do, so let’s press on.

Now listen, don’t let the simplicity of the question fool you because it’ll be easy to dismiss it, but if you do, you’ll never even achieve a fraction of what you are capable of. Ok, so here it is:

What Work Are You Willing To Leave Undone?

The sooner you realize that you can’t read everything, nor can you cross off every item on your to do list the better. Because at that very moment you are forced to realize that you absolutely must prioritize no matter what.

You see, realizing you can’t do everything helps you determine what you really must be doing, and realizing you can’t read everything forces you to decide which information you must read.

Now if you are wondering how you make these difficult decisions, have no fear because the answer is simple. You have to know what you want and what you must do to get it. Once you know then you can make effective decisions about what you should be doing, who you should be talking to, and what you should be studying.

What’s important is that we each make the best contribution we can. Ask yourself this: Are you currently making the best contribution you’re capable of making? If the answer is clearly no, then there’s no point in continuing on your current path, is there? Common sense suggests that if you know you’re on the wrong path, you should stop walking. The longer you stay on the wrong path, the worse things are for all of us. Maybe it will take a few days to find the right path. Maybe it will take several years. But it’s still better to be lost for several years than to be lost for a lifetime.

Why do we hold ourselves back from the best and settle for the good? Fear. We fear what it will be like to live on the edge of the best. Just imagine what it would feel like to be reading the very best book, doing the best workout, eating the best food, having the best job, enjoying the best relationship, living in the best house, driving the best car, having the best friends, living the best life.

If you’re holding something that’s just good while something better is easily within your grasp, then your good isn’t really good at all. The good is the enemy of the best. You have to give up doing something good in order to do something better. Be willing to bypass many good things because they are just not good enough compared to what’s best. You want to serve and help, but you want to serve and help in the best way you can.

You need to sacrifice the urgent for the important. Many a times, what’s urgent is not really necessary to be dealt with after all. You need to go for what’s best instead of what’s good or even great. Do not forfeit the greater good by allowing yourself to be entangled with the lesser good.

Have you ever single-mindedly decided to pursue a goal or solve a problem and just as you were making progress on it something grabbed your attention and moved your focus away from what you were focused on? Then all of a sudden when you went back to try to focus in on it again, you felt like EVERYTHING backed up on you and you had even more problems or things to tend to or deal with first.

It is a myth that opportunity only comes along once in a life time. The truth is, it comes along every day. If you have a vision and a clearly defined goal for your business, you can now determine what opportunities compliment your goal and are congruent with your business goals or if the opportunity is really a cleverly disguised DISTRACTION.

Keep your eye on your goal and DO NOT allow outside distractions to pull your attention off of what you are aiming to achieve. The truth is, many of these distractions will come as HUGE opportunities presented with great marketing, the rest will come as your very own family and friends.

But, some opportunities must be seized. And if this one will help you do what you already want to do better, or are doing better, then you know to take advantage of this opportunity and achieve greater success or at a faster rate. Instead of chasing opportunities, pick your position. The one that works to your strengths and compliments your vision. The secret of success is to discipline your life so that you support your deepest purpose and minimize distractions and detours.

You need to be great at ONE thing and good at every thing else. Those that end up quitting, try to be “great at everything”, and in the end are great at nothing and good at one thing, which is making no money at all.

It is very likely that you are the only person in your business with the capabilities and knowledge and skills to bring in new business, and making sure projects get completed. This is the only way your business prospers. When you don’t do these things, they don’t get done!

Focus on things that directly relate to improving the results of your immediate business. Leave other things aside if you want to see exponential growth faster. It is all a matter of balancing between closing yourself to other opportunities and opening yourself to them.

Stay focused and concentrate on your goal. In doing so, you will maintain your momentum and quickly achieve your dreams and desires. Let others waste their time on things that don’t get any real work done, while you focus only on what’s best and what’s important.

What to Expect in a Suzuki Violin School

Secretly, every doting parent wishes his/ her child to be an expert in some form of art. It is not uncommon to encounter parents enrolling their little kids in ballet, painting, and music classes in the hope that their kid may take interest in artistic expression. In music, the violin is perhaps one of the instruments parents may prefer their kids to get acquainted with. Before enrolling your child in violin lessons however, parents should know that there are different methods which can be used by violin schools in teaching kids to play the violin. One famous method is the Suzuki method. What should parents expect in a Suzuki violin school?

Parents should know first of all that in a Suzuki violin school, kids start early. Although older students are not prevented from enrolling, students should preferably be 3-5 years old when they start. This is because Suzuki, the founder of the method himself, has observed and believes in the excellent ability of kids to learn fast.

If you’re thinking, “How can my kid learn to read the notes when he does not even know how to read anything else?” In a Suzuki violin school, kids are not expected to immediately learn how to read notes, so you don’t have to worry of your child’s ability to comprehend complex pieces on paper. The Suzuki method believes in a student’s ability to learn by listening and following. Suzuki explains this as analogous to a child learning to speak the native language. Place a child from a different race in another country and that child will eventually learn to speak that place’s native tongue instead of the language of his/ her biological ancestors. Children naturally learn language by listening to adults and following what they say.

Since all normal children eventually learn how to speak, it is also expected that all children are inherently capable of learning the violin. A Suzuki violin school does not discriminate according to race, nationality, gender, social status or even in musical aptitude. Schools that are pure adherents to the Suzuki method may do away with auditions that are a necessity in other schools. This is because auditions, by their very nature, presuppose that only a child with some musical knowledge may enroll, excluding others who know nothing. This goes against the belief that everyone can learn.

In a Suzuki violin school, expect your child to memorize through repetition. Just as children learn the meaning and significance of word by using them repeatedly, so do students of the Suzuki method learn by repeating past lessons. The method also encourages not just individual learning and performance but group as well, with both frequent individual and group performances.

Finally, parents should expect a Suzuki violin school to ask parents themselves to participate and motivate their children to participate and practice. In some schools, parents are asked to attend classes and help teachers teach their children. At home parents are expected to remind students to practice and assist them in listening to recordings.

All in all, it is obvious that entering a Suzuki violin school entails tremendous dedication and discipline, but if, as a parent, you believe in Suzuki’s philosophy, you can expect to have children who’ll know more than just the difference between a violin and a guitar.

Tips On… Fighting Saltwater Game Fish A Beginners Guide

The following guidance assumes you are fairly new to big game saltwater fishing and are out fishing on a charter boat. This type of information is given to all guests aboard our game boats if they are not experienced anglers. Occasionally we have to remind experienced anglers as well !

Lets assume you are out doing some general trolling for wahoo, mahi mahi or tuna on 30lb class IGFA tackle. The deckie has set a pattern of 4 lures behind the boat and one of the reels starts to scream….

1. Pick up the rod.

Sounds simple but sometimes the rod seems to be jammed in the rod holder. Don’t try to yank or force it out. It’s wedged because of the pressure the fish is exerting on the rod tip. Grasp the rod fore-grip in front of the reel and pull it slightly backwards (away from the fish). You will find that the rod then easily comes out of the rod holder.

2. Assume the position.

Unless you are fighting a fish from a game chair, hold the rod with the reel uppermost, your left hand well up the fore-grip and the butt of the rod resting low down on your hip. This leaves your right hand free to wind the reel handle. Hold the rod at about 45 degrees. The higher up the rod your left hand is, the more leverage you can apply. It’s important that you feel comfortable. Some fights can last hours though 10-20 minutes is the norm so you had better be comfy. It is usual at this point for the deckie to put a butt pad on you. No, its not a comfy cushion for you to sit on - its a plastic cushioned pad that hangs from your waist, rests on your thighs and has a slot where you rest the butt of the rod. This will stop the rod butt digging into you and causing bruising and spread the load over your thighs during a prolonged fight. With the end of the rod sitting in the butt pad and your left hand holding the fore-grip you should feel stable and comfortable. You are on a boat, its moving around so step up to the side of the boat or better still the corner, bend your knees slightly and wedge your knees slightly under the cockpit combing - the padded edge. This is a good stable position even on a pitching and rolling boat.

3. Keep The Rod Tip Bent.

Its that simple. The greatest cause of fish being lost is the line not being tight between the rod tip and the fish. If the line is not tight, the hook is not being held in place and the fish will likely spit the lure out. If the rod tip is bent at all times, then pressure is being applied to the fish at all times. This also means that the fish doesn’t get a free rest and you will wear him out more quickly and get him to the boat sooner. If the fish swims towards you, wind wind wind to keep that line tight and the rod tip bent.

The rod also acts as a shock absorber. Any jerks from sudden movements by the fish are absorbed by the rod tip. If you point the rod straight at the fish, it’s not doing anything and sudden jerks are transmitted straight to you and the reel. (Trust me - it will end in tears)

4. Slow Down - Its Not A Race !

Most (wait - scrub that) ALL novice anglers when confronted with a screaming reel panic and franticly wind like crazy. You are wasting your time and energy. If the reel is screaming it means that it is paying out line and will continue to do so whether you try to wind or not. Wait for the fish to end its run for cover. Then you can think about winding.

5. Lift Up and Wind Down

Good quality game fishing reels have a sophisticated drag system. A reasonable analogy would be the clutch in a manual car. Adjusting the lever drag on a game reel is like depressing the car’s clutch pedal. All the way out and the engine is engaged, (reel drag engaged), all the way in and the engine is free wheeling (Reel is in Free-spool).

This means that an angler can set the lever drag somewhere in the middle. The reel will then pay out line (clutch will slip) when the line is pulled with sufficient force. To put it simply, you can set the drag to pay out line if the fish pulls harder than a set amount.

It is normal for the drag to be set at between one quarter and one third the breaking strain of the line. In theory it is therefore impossible for the fish to snap the line. If the fish pulls really hard, instead of the line snapping, the reel just lets line out.

When the fish ends its run, the reel will go quiet and the pressure on the rod tip will ease up a little. Now is the time to win some of that line back.

Raise the rod tip, start to wind the reel and whilst winding, slowly lower the rod tip. Don’t raise the rod tip so high that it’s over your head and don’t lower it so low that the rod is pointing at the fish.

Lift up and wind down. Try to keep your movements as smooth as possible and keep that rod tip bent at all times.

6. Tag & Release or Boating a fish

Different fish react in different ways when near the boat. Yellowfin tuna for example go into a circular pattern underneath the hull. The most important thing here is to not let the line touch any part of the boat. If it does, it will probably break. The skipper will manoeuvre the vessel as best he can to keep the line and fish away from the props and rudders but it’s also your job not to let the line touch the side of the boat. Feel free to move about the cockpit. Change sides if the fish swims in the other direction. Don’t plant yourself in one spot and stay there. Listen up for instructions from the crew and move to anywhere where it’s just you and the fish with no boat in between.

Usually the boat will be slowly moving forwards. You are trying to work the fish up alongside the boat so that the fish can then be tagged or gaffed. Moving the boat forwards maintains a flow of water over the fish and its gills. This keeps the fish much happier than if you stopped and the fish is therefore less stressed and less likely to do something unexpected. It is always a good idea to do this if you intend on tagging and releasing the fish.

7. And Lastly…

Everybody looses fish, even the real pro’s. Don’t knock yourself down. Learn from mistakes and it won’t happen again. Every trip out there I learn something new. Don’t be shy in asking questions.

Gamefishing is a sport and like all sports, you need to practice…

Just make sure you have fun practicing….

Impromptu Speaking

Impromptu Speaking…Why do those words send a chill down the back of so many people? Impromptu speaking is something that we do every day of our lives unless we are a hermit living in a shack at the top of a mountain.

“Hello, how are you?” Your answer………impromptu speaking! You haven’t had a chance to practice for this occasion, to choose just the right words to say to this particular person, you just say, “Fine, how are you?”

Now, this may lead to further impromptu conversation or it may not, it depends on how well you know the person, how much time you have to spend, etc.

If you are in the retail business and someone comes up to ask you a question about a product, you answer and there you go, you are doing impromptu speaking!.

Many people have said they’d rather be dead than give a speech in public, but how many of these people can talk to 4 or 5 people about something they are really interested in and not feel even a tiny twinge of fear. That is an example of public speaking.

It’s not really all that hard. People just think it is hard. But like anything, it takes practice to do it really well. You may think that you would never be able to speak like some of the motivational speakers you have seen, and you may be right, their style may not suit you. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t learn to speak in the style that does.

Some people are humourous speakers and have no problem fitting humour into every speech they do, others are technical speakers and learn to present facts and figures in a way that makes people want to listen. Others are story tellers, wrapping their audience up in the tales they tell and still others have a dramatic flair using their gestures to give their audience an idea of what they are talking about.

Just as it is important in internet marketing to find your particular niche or market, so it is in public speaking.

People join Toastmasters and other speaking clubs for a variety of reasons. Some just want to be comfortable standing up in front of a group of people without stuttering and stammering. Others need to be able to deliver speeches and presentations in their daily job. Still others have dreams of becoming a standup comic or a motivational speaker. Each of us has a dream and each of our dreams is different, but we can come together and share these dreams in a safe and nurturing place - a Toastmasters’ Club.

Toastmasters International has developed a very thorough program which will lead you to develop skills in a number of areas such as: vocal variety–using your voice as a tool to engage your audience, speaking softly or loudly, with expression; gestures–using your body in a way that enhances what you are saying; words–using words that match the level of your audience, not speaking over their heads, or beneath their abilities; organization-how to craft your speech with an opening, a body and a conclusion, how to choose 3 main points to cover so that the audience will retain your message. All these and more are available to you in a Toastmasters Club.

In addition to the lessons you can learn about speaking, there are also opportunities for you to learn leadership skills as you participate in the weekly meetings as a Toastmaster, Table Topics Master, Ah Counter, Quiz Master, Grammarian, etc. These skills are beneficial to anyone in the working world as you learn to listen to others, to really hear what is being said, and you learn to take charge of the group for a short period of time.

If you don’t currently belong to a club, but would like to learn more about Toastmasters, you can google your town and the word Toastmasters or you can go to the main Toastmasterswebsite and look for a club near you. You will find many things at a Toastmasters Club, much more than just help with your speaking; you will find friendship and caring and people who want to help you be the best that you can be.

Franchising Overseas

When it comes to expanding your business overseas, franchising has become the Modus Operandi of the day. In Singapore, many businesses including restaurants, cafe chains and fashion chains have shown interest in and considered setting up overseas franchises. It makes sense financially for them in the sense that the franchisor (the business owner that grants the franchise) can charge an initial fee to the overseas franchisee (the person who takes the franchise). Franchising in effect provides an almost cost-free expansion since the original business receives royalties and a constant stream of income from the franchise. But there are pitfalls to avoid. Franchising may not be suitable for all businesses and an overseas operation can fail for a number of reasons.

This article sets out briefly some of the challenges a franchisor venturing overseas may face and how to overcome and resolve them.

Franchise Systems
Companies that wish to enter into a franchise agreement should familiarise themselves with the franchise system. There are three different ways to operate a franchise:

Unit franchise:
The business owner allows only one franchise outlet, and licenses all trade marks and other proprietary rights to only that one outlet.

Area franchise
The franchisee is only allowed to operate under the trade mark or brand name in one designated geographical area, such as the province of New South Wales as compared to the whole of Australia.

Master franchise
The franchisee is entitled to operate in the whole country, sometimes with a right to create sub-franchises and appoint sub-franchisees within the country.

Costing would differ for each of the above types of franchises and is also affected by the potential market size and share in the targeted country.

Regulations and Other Legal Issues
The next things to look out for when considering whether to franchise are the laws and local regulations in the targeted countries, which will impact on the franchisor. In countries such as the USA, the franchisor must comply with stringent disclosure requirements while in countries like Indonesia, the franchisor may be required to register the franchise agreement with the relevant authority before commencing operations. These requirements do not really present too much of a problem to the franchisor, but they have to be complied with nonetheless. The franchisor should also pay particular attention to laws and regulations in various other countries that directly affect the business of the franchise. One example of what we mean here is that, since February 2005, franchising has not been allowed in China for foreign retail brands which do not have a minimum of two shops and more than one year of operations in China. This amendment to the franchise regulations has made it difficult for established local brands to franchise to China.

Of course there are perfectly legal solutions to avoid the problems that may be encountered. The rules differ from country to country and, therefore, any prospective franchisor must seek legal advice when venturing into a foreign jurisdiction for the first time to ensure that all such regulations and formalities required under the laws of the targeted country are complied with.

Of course in some cases, it may still not be advisable to commit to a franchise agreement even though all the indications are positive. Some product lines may simply be unsuitable for franchising.

Common Problems Faced by Franchisors
There are a range of problems that could be encountered by franchisors and we have attempted to address the most common ones here.

Initial Investment
One of the problems when embarking on a franchise, especially for local companies or SMEs (small medium enterprises) seeking to expand overseas, is the costs involved in the early stages of a franchise. Preparation for franchising has to be done without the guarantee of payment and collection of franchise fees and royalties in the short term. The costs involved include:

–developing the franchise concept (normally done with the help of engaging external consultants)

–overseas market research

–legal matters

–providing support

–looking for suitable franchisees

–training

–product costs

–supply of products to the franchisees

For retail chains, financial problems with shipment and manufacturing (even after executing an agreement with the franchisee) have to be considered. The sizable initial costs plus the time lag (about half a year to more than one year for preparations) before the franchisor can recoup the money from the franchisee, may result in cash flow problems for the franchisor. This is especially so for smaller retail chains with a yearly turnover of say US$1m to US$5m as they may not have the financial resources to provide or compensate for any delays.

One example we experienced that illustrates this point is the case of a Singapore shoe retail chain (with about 5-6 shops) which embarked on a franchise for its shoe retail chain in Indonesia. In the contract, it was stated that the balance of payment would be paid after the goods had arrived at the Port of Jakarta. However, the payment was not made. Despite this, the franchisor had no alternative but to release the goods as they were already in the Port of Jakarta. He only received payment at a time much later than the agreed date. This delay caused him some cash flow difficulties.

Problems like this can and should be addressed legally in the franchise agreement just as they would be in a contract for international or cross-border sales of goods.

Financial concerns can also lead to the lack of adequate preparation in coming up with the franchise concept. This can, in turn, lead to inconsistency in the quality of the products and different levels of support or commitment by the franchisor in different countries. The food in a franchise outlet in say, Australia, where the franchisor is located, would taste much better than those in another outlet from the same franchise in China. Though the situation may improve after some time, this is the usual problem that local brands or small medium enterprises face at the onset.

The Trade Mark Problem
Usually, trade marks are the most important intellectual property rights in a franchise. Trade marks are territorial in nature and the franchisor will have to register its trade mark in the targeted country before it can be protected there. Registration in your own home country is not good enough and your local registration will not be recognised in another country.

The franchisor may sometimes find that his trade mark has already been registered in the targeted country by a local third party as was the case with a particular popular Indonesian fashion brand seeking to franchise in Korea and Thailand. It found out the hard way about stolen trade marks when it discovered, after entering into a franchise agreement with a local franchisee, that its own brand name had already been registered by other companies in these countries. To make matters worse, it decided to leave these issues to the local franchisee instead, thinking that the local franchisee would be more familiar with the situation. This caused him serious financial losses as he had already shipped his products to the franchisee. The franchisee subsequently defaulted on payment and did nothing to resolve the trade mark problem. From this it becomes clear that some initial market research in the targeted countries and legal advice are needed when you want to start your franchise.

Registering Your Trade Marks in Foreign Countries
The Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks (”Madrid Protocol”) and the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (”Paris Convention”) are two very important international treaties regarding the registration of trade marks.

The Madrid Protocol provides a one-stop filing system so that the franchisor can file for trade mark protection in his own country as well as his targeted countries at the same time. It does not give you an international trade mark that is recognised by all its member states or all countries across the globe, but provides a convenience of filing in different countries at one go and also reduces the costs of filing.

The Paris Convention on the other hand, provides a very useful mechanism allowing the franchisor to file the trade mark in his home country first at an earlier date and subsequently, within a given time frame, when he decides to file his trade mark in his targeted country, he is able to claim priority or use his first and earlier filing date in his own country as the date of filing in the targeted country. The Paris Convention gives the franchisor time to source for funds before filing for trade mark protection in the targeted countries and the peace of mind that comes with knowing that he can be protected by filing first in his home country.

Take a real-life example of a Korean cosmetics company setting up its business in Singapore. It registered its trade mark first in Korea sometime in December 2005 before coming into Singapore. Upon entry into the Singapore market, it then filed for trade mark protection in Singapore under the Paris Convention sometime in March 2006. However, the directors quickly received notification from the Singapore trade marks registry that there was an identical trade mark filed by their competitor in January 2006. Taking advantage of the Paris Convention, the Korean company was able to claim the earlier filing date in Korea of December 2005 as their date of filing in Singapore and this allowed them to effectively override their competitor’s earlier application. This helped prevent a situation where the Korean company would either have had to shelve its plans in Singapore or embark on costly litigation to recover its trade mark.

In general, it is usually not advisable to leave trade mark matters such as registration to the franchisee. The trade marks should always, where possible, be filed in the name of the franchisor otherwise the brand value or recognition of the trade mark may be diminished in the long run since the public in the targeted country may come to identify the trade mark with the local franchisee and not the franchisor.

Other Intellectual Property Rights

Copyright

This is another form of intellectual property rights which may be of interest to the franchisor. Copyright can attach to many possible mediums and is not confined to brand or logos alone. Instructional manuals, business forms, software and other items may all be protected by copyright. Unlike trade marks, copyright usually does not have to be registered and can be protected in many foreign countries at one time if these countries are all signatories to the same international copyright convention.

Patents

These do not quite fit into the business model of franchises since patents are, by their nature, confined to subject matter of heavy industrial application. This may change in the future as many countries such as Singapore have made or are making changes to their laws, allowing business methods to be patented. Like a trade mark, a patent has to be registered and have its own equivalent of an international system of registration by way of the Patent Co-operation Treaty. The Paris Convention also applies to patents.

Control over Franchisees

It is always advisable to exercise some supervision and control over a franchisee. The first step towards this is to incorporate the right clauses in your franchise agreement at the onset. The franchisor should insist on some form of reporting requirements and a right to inspect accounts. There should also be some provisions to safeguard the franchise concept and sometimes the franchisor’s business methods. Generally, the franchisor should be looking to protect, by way of contractual clauses in the agreement, what may not be protectable under intellectual property laws.

This helps the franchisor to prevent a situation where the franchisee acquires knowledge, copies the franchise concept and uses this to compete with the franchisor. This can sometimes happen at the end of the franchise period. Basically, there should be restrictions imposed on the franchisee when dealing with materials or other property of the franchisor, and these should be returned and accounted for by the franchisor upon the expiry or termination of the franchise.

See You in Court - But Which Court?

It may be at times necessary to take legal action against an errant overseas franchisee that is outside the jurisdiction of the courts and also beyond the control of the laws in the franchisor’s home country.

It is advisable to make some provisions for this in your franchise agreement. The two important considerations here are the place to sue and the law to apply. It is important to seek legal advice for these matters since your choice of place and law often determines success and directly affects the prospects of recovery as rules may differ from country to country. Some countries may have bilateral reciprocal enforcement regimes allowing their respective courts to recognise and enforce each other’s judgments while others may be signatories of international conventions to the same effect. It is important to know these in order to choose your place to sue and the applicable law.

Sub-Franchising and Exchange of Goods

Another problem with franchising is the inconvenience caused to end consumers when it comes to the exchanging of defective products. This is especially so where there is sub-franchising created in different places in the same country. For instance, in Australia, when a customer buys an item of clothing from an outlet in Sydney, he would not be able to exchange it in the franchise in Melbourne. This also happens in Indonesia, especially if the shop is owned by different people. That is why some retail chains like Hammer and Nail (Indonesia) prefer to own the business themselves. This can be used either as an alternative or a stepping stone to establishing a fully fledged franchise.

Raise Public Awareness First

It may be easier for local brands who want to expand overseas by franchising to consider setting up their own flagship store in the overseas country first. This would raise public awareness of their brand and product in the targeted country and help to attract more franchisees later on. Famous local brands such as BreadTalk in Singapore may not be known to anyone in overseas countries, such as Germany. As such, potential investors in Germany would be hesitant to invest in the brand. By setting up a flagship store, the franchisor can test the local market.

However, before venturing overseas, research should also be done on consumer behaviour to make sure that the consumers in that country would appreciate the product, bearing in mind that different countries have different cultures, tastes and market trends.

Franchising -

A Great Tool for the Right Business with the Right Knowledge
Franchising is a useful tool when it comes to expanding your business overseas. However, as we have shown here, there are also potential pitfalls and risks involved. This can be avoided or at least minimised if the necessary preparatory work is carried out before you venture into a franchise agreement with a foreign partner.

Acquiring knowledge of consumer behaviour patterns, local market conditions and regulations, developing a suitable franchise concept as well as paying attention to various details in your franchise agreements are just some of the more critical matters that you, as franchisor, should take note of.

Knowing your market and your rights as a franchisor or a trade mark owner lays down the foundation for the creation of a successful franchise.

The Secret And Chocolate

“The beverage of the gods was ambrosia. That of man is chocolate…”
–Louis Lewin, M.D. Fantastica

“The Secret” is out!

Okay, by now you’ve heard of it: The Law of Attraction is all the rage and rightly so. It’s the most powerful law in the Universe and it’s time has come. No longer coveted by the privileged, Law of Attraction has recently been getting press from such mainstreamers as Oprah, Ellen and Larry King thanks to the wildly successful movie phenomenon entitled “The Secret”. While Law of Attraction may be new to the masses, it’s tried and true an has the power to change your life.

If you’ve seen The Secret you know that the main idea with Law of Attraction is to put the good vibes to work attracting what you want into your life and let the ‘bad’ ones fall by the wayside. Sounds simple, right? While Law of Attraction is simple in theory, we’re human and inevitably there will be times that we’re not feeling in the flow. Those are the times we’ll need to call upon our trusty bag of tools that can put us back in the “zone”. Don’t have one? No need to despair. There’s a variety of widely available tools to choose from, from formal scripting to simply letting go. But, my personal favorite? Chocolate!!!!

Chocolate as a manifestation tool?

It’s no ’secret’ that chocolate has long been touted as the most irresistible of all forbidden fruits. (And a fruit it is! Chocolate as we know it is made from the seeds of the fruit bearing Thoebroma Cacao tree.) It’s history is about as long and scandalous as a daytime soap opera, but slightly more interesting in my oppinion. For example, in ancient Central American Cultures, cacao seeds were actually used as money. Imagine that, edible money! And what’s more is that they continued to be used as standard currency in Mexico until 1887! They were called “black gold” by Spanish, and according to David Wolfe and Shazzie in their book entitled Naked Chocolate, “Cacao embodies the energy of abundance and opportunity… the possibility to go from longshot to legend… from depression to profound optimism…. and the possibility to go from rags to riches.” Enough said, this food has power! It’s mysterious and magical, but does Cacao truly have the ability to change our lives? And if not, then what is at the core of these ancient peoples obsession with chocolate? What did the ancient people know about chocolate that we’re missing today?

We all know that chocolate can make life better. But does chocolate have the ability to draw experiences into our lives? Sounds a bit crazy doesn’t it. But let’s examine how manifestation actually works. We send out a vibration into the Universe and then based that vibration the Universe returns to us that which is on the same wavelength. Much the same as tuning the radio station to the frequency of the station we’re wanting to listen to. Like attracts like, right? While according to recent research chocolate may have far more health benefits than any other fruit, perhaps the most worthy to note is it’s abundance of the chemical phenylalanine, better known as “the love chemical”. Phenylalanine creates profound states of bliss and euphoria. When we fall in love our phenylalanine levels increase and studies show that the chemical is noticeably more abundant in the brains of happy people. And, what are happy people? That’s right, attractive!! So, if chocolate has the ability to make us feel better and feelings are how we gauge what we’re vibrating, then eating chocolate just might be a valid tool for keeping our vibe in top form and attracting what we want in life. Amen!

Wait, there’s more….!

What if you fear chocolate because you’ve heard all your life it was a ‘guilty’ pleasure. You probably were never told that chocolate in it’s natural form is antibacterial, anti-fungal, immune system supportive and way more. Guilt be gone!! What’s not to feel good about? Might want to start thinking about keeping some chocolate in that toolbox to bring out on a rainy day. Or else, if you’re like me, have some every day!!

Deep down didn’t you always know that chocolate made life better? Perhaps not this literally, but somehow that eating chocolate was beneficial? It’s no wonder that the ancient cultivators of cacao, the Mayan people, had such a deep spiritual connection to this food. It’s both nutritious and attractive!! What’s not to feel good about!!! Chocolate makes life more delicious in every way!!

***The authors statement concern chocolate in it’s pure form and not the refined sugar and other additives contained in most commercial chocolate bars.

Natural Bodybuilding Workout Review - Optimum Anabolics

You know what, I used to be just like you.

I’d spend 6-7 hours at the gym each week, and workout hard. But after doing this for months (in fact 9 months) I found that I didn’t put on much muscle at all.

I was working hard, yet had no results to show for it.

Sounds familiar?

Well, it’s a very common situation for guys who go to the gym, to put all that effor tin and to not be able to pack on muscle easily.

See, the problem is not that they’re lazy, the problem is that the bodybuilding workout they’re using is not effective.

With a bodybuilding workout that is effective, then the rewards are great!

Let’s review such a workout.

It’s called Optimum Anabolics by Jeff Anderson.

When I used this workout, I didn’t know what to expect, but I found:

1. I spent 2 and a half to 3 hours a week at the gym (instead of 6 or 7) but I got more than double the results I used to!

2. I gained muscle in all areas: chest, shoulders, bicpes, triceps, back, and I noticed a change in 2 weeks. After 12 weeks, the results were even better. Plus I lost fat much easier.

3. My use of protein supplements dropped overall and I would spend much less on these supplements. In fact, I have dropped all protein powders and creatine altogether now and the results are just as good.

4. My body would look great with or without a shirt on : )

See, the way Jeff’s natural bodybuilding program Optimum Anabolics works is that it uses:

1. Supersets in such a way that get’s the best pump - much better than any other program I’ve tried so far. This not only feels great, but have caused me to get much more results than I ever had, even with other ‘good’ bodybuilding ebooks available on the net.

2. Uses a program that actually changes as the weeks go by, in terms of intensity and set numbers.

See this is something that natural bodybuilders in the know are using all the time, but most guys simply do not know about.

When you do this, your muscles are shocked into growing, even when the intensity goes down every 5-6 weeks. You’ll learn about all this in the program.

3. The amount of protein in the diet also changes in a specific way. Again, you’ll get all this in the program.

As I said, I like other bodybuilding programs, but because this has given me the best results, I’ve stuck with it.

So if you want results instead of spending hours and hours at the gym and not getting the great looking body you want, then check out this program by Jeff.

You get to spend only 3 hours at the gym per week and get double the results.

It will save you time, and get you the results you deserve.

So go for it and gain muscle, lose fat and get the great looking body you’ve always wanted.

Lucas Ryan helps you to gain muscle and lose fat so that you can show off your bodybuilding efforts and look ripped in no time. For more valuable tips visit his site on bodybuilding workout routine reviews, and get real results with your training.

What Went Pear Shaped # 1 - Trolling Lures For Pacific Blue Marlin

2.30pm heading away from the Kadavu Seamount 1. Trolling a spread of 4 lures near the Kadavu seamount - A purple Hollowpoint Cabo Killa on the long rigger, and a blue/white/yellow/pink Black Bart Hot Breakfast on the short rigger, both lures with a single 10/0 Stainless steel hook stiff rigged on wire. 19 feet of 400lb wind-on and 9 feet of 300lb Ande leader. Short and long corners were a huge silver / yellow custom MBT Monster and a John Lau Linda, both 12/0 double hook loose shackle rigged at about 45 degrees. (Pakula style)

A large blue of about 600lbs comes in from the right, nails the short rigger, (skipper guns the boat) then crosses over and nails the long rigger as that lure passes her as well. Two Penn International 80s howling. The fish then charges away in the opposite direction to the boat on the surface for a few seconds and then disappears. (Pandemonium on deck- is it a double hook-up? Who goes in the chair ? - lots of yelling coming from the bridge).

Angler standing by each rod till we find out exactly what’s going on. (I know I know, immediate failure to comply with IGFA Rules - but you try standing and indefinitely holding a screaming bent butt 80 with 25lbs of drag - Hays Handle or not) 5 seconds later the blue emerges only 40 yards behind the boat and launches vertically clean out of the sea giving everybody a magnificent image of a huge blue, side on, silver and golden flanks, 15 feet in the air. The blue seems to hang, suspended in the air whilst 6 jaws hit the deck then crashes back in a fit of anger, throws both lures and disappears.

Anglers wind in tangled mess of two lures with both leaders heavily scuffed for several feet ahead of each lure. One of the hooks had its point bent.

What went right ?

  1. Well, -we went to the right place. (had another small blue earlier on a -skipbait)

  2. We -ran the right lures in the right colours. (lures imitating the -skipjack tuna and mahi that were in the area)

  3. Our -hooks were sharp

  4. We -gunned the boat after the strike to help set the hook.

What went wrong

  1. Single -hook stiff cable rig is not the way to go. The blue was able to -throw both lures. If they had been rigged with a 2 hook loose -shackle rig, the trailing hook may have swung over or under the bill -and given us a hook-up. If we had still run single hook rigs -(because of extra weight killing the lure action) it might have been -better if we had not used a stiff wire rig and used heavy mono -instead, allowing the hook to swing a little.

  2. One -of the hooks had its point bent. It had tried to penetrate but the -point area, being very sharp, was also thin compared to the gauge of -the hook. The line pressure must have been trying to set the hook at -an angle to the direction of the hook point and instead of driving -the point in, it bent it.

In my humble opinion”

If you are fishing for blue marlin, I recommend a two hook rig or a single hook set well back in the skirt and rigged on heavy mono to give it some flexibility. Yes, a 2 hook rig can pin a marlins jaws shut so you absolutely must remove the hooks and yes- a big mahi mahi on the deck with one hook in its mouth and another flailing around is a nightmare for any deckie but if you are worried about that, go with a single Duratin hook on mono. (we do worry about that)

Don’t hone your hook points so much so that the point is long and thin. By all means have a sharp point but keep that point length shorter rather than longer.

As to whether or not you should use hooks where the point is parallel to the shank (like the Shogun T481 or Maruto 1983) or turned in slightly towards the shank (like the Mustad 7691 or Maruto 1962) ?

Jury is still out. I know some skippers use one of each in their large lures with the trailing hook being the turned in style.

I suspect that the whole issue of hook rigs in large Marlin lures is a hotbed of discussion. I have posed the question to Tim Simpson, the Editor of BlueWater magazine. It may be that the next issue of the magazine has some interesting comments from professionals such as Peter Pakula.

Oh, by the way - the Feb/Mar issue has a lead story on the top Blue marlin skippers favourite lures and how they like to rig them. www.bluewatermag.com.au
