Car Buying Tips - The Basic Truth About Car Dealer Trade Values

The most complex aspect of buying a vehicle from a dealership is working with the trade in. Despite most consumers’ best efforts, it’s often difficult to get a straight answer to the question, “How much for yours, and how much for mine?”

It usually isn’t an attempt by car dealers to be obtuse or really “stick it” to the customer. In truth, most consumers would laugh if they knew how much the dealership is actually giving them for their trade.
There is “Actual Cash Value” and there is “Trade Allowance”. Most dealers submit trade allowance for review when negotiating with customers because not getting enough for a trade-in is the most common reason for someone to walk away from a car deal.

Actual cash value (ACV) is just as it sounds. All things being equal, if the dealership were to stroke a check for a vehicle without selling one back to the customer, this is the amount that the dealer is putting into the vehicle. It is often the same as replacement value (how much it would cost to pick up a similar vehicle wholesale or at an auction) but not always. There are other factors, but for this article, just the basics.

Trade allowance is ACV plus profit reduction from the cost of the vehicle the auto dealer is selling. They aren’t “giving” that much for the trade-in, but they are “showing” that much in the trade-in.
For example, let’s say the dealership is has an asking price of $20,000 on a GMC 1500. This dealership actually owns the truck for $17,500. They place an ACV of $9,000 on the trade in.

After some back and forth negotiating, they offer $10,000 for the trade and take $500 off of theirs. That would be $19,500 minus $10,000 for a trade difference of $9,500. The consumer may like this deal.

In reality, they are still only putting $9,000 in the trade and taking $1,500 off of theirs, yielding a profit of $1,000. But if they present the numbers as $18,500 for theirs and $9,000 for the trade, the consumer is more likely to walk away from the deal, even though the trade difference is still the same.

The reason: people want more for their trade than what the dealership really wants to put into it. By believing they are getting $10,000 for the trade and a modest discount on the truck, they are more inclined to pull the trigger.

It isn’t some evil dealership scam. It’s simply adjusting to the buying habits and preferences of the consumers. Still, there is a way to find the true value of a trade.

Every city has a handful of dealerships that buy vehicles off of consumers. Carmax is spreading rapidly across the US, plus establish independent dealers such as Oklahoma City Used Cars still make cash offers for vehicles.

If a consumer prefers to get a ballpark via the internet versus having to go to an appraisal, they shouldn’t check with car value sites such as Edmunds or Kelley Blue Book. While these are excellent resources for new cars, they are often inflated on their used car values.

Consumers should find out what vehicles similar to theirs are actually selling for. Used car sites such as Memphis Used Cars have databases. Whatever dealers are selling theirs for, deduct $2,000-$4,000 for vehicles under $30,000 to get a ballpark of what dealerships are actually putting into vehicles.

Use this information when negotiating. Many sites and articles recommend holding the trade in information as a secret until later in the deal. This is pointless, wastes time, and is counterproductive to getting the best deal.

It may make the numbers more accurate, since a dealership will be more inclined to offer their true best price on a vehicle if there is no trade to account for, but it won’t help save money. Once the trade is presented, the numbers on it will simply be lower than if it was presented originally. In fact, the wasting of time and displaying dishonesty in the negotiations can actually hurt the value.

Be upfront, but have the knowledge of the trade-value handy. If you know someone will stroke a check for $10,000 and the dealership with your next vehicle offers $9,500, pull the trade out of the equation, sell your car, then buy the new one without trading. It’s simple.

A Way To Fine Dining

Restaurants can be good, bad or fabulous. In order to find the fabulous, one must look to a city of diners who refuse to settle for less than a perfect meal.

Paris, New York,Montreal, San Francisco come to mind. Most who live and dine in these cities are extremely critical and demanding. This makes the competition huge and in order for a restaurant to survive they must strive for satisfaction from their customers.

The next time you are served a meal with rudeness, or served inferior food, be sure to voice your disapproval. No, don’t make a scene, but be sure you make it known to the management that you do not accept inferior service and or food.

Loud music, dirty clothed waiters, rushed service, half cooked food? Not something you should allow in your presence. The passive diner who merely leaves and decides not to return is actually contributing to support this poor food, service and restaurant style.

I have lived in Orange County California for over fifty years and can barely find a restaurant worth the price of the meal. I am convinced it is because the customers have learned to accept this and so nothing will ever improve. The few that have acceptable food, ruin the good with the noise of loud music and the lack of professionally trained servers. The somewhat lazy and non caring attitude of some owners and managers ruin the meal and make the restaurant a bad choice.

When I travel to other cities and discover the thrill of good and enjoyable eating once again, I feel compelled to try and change the attitude that prevails here in Orange County in California. I constantly hope for a better and more enjoyable meal the next time I dare to try to dine in Orange County once again.

2007 Australian Grand Prix - Nice Start For McLaren Mercedes

Fernando Alonso, nicknamed El Nano, qualified second in the recently conducted Australian Grand Prix held in Melbourne on March 18. He was followed closely by Lewis Hamilton, who landed third. Alonso and Hamilton, who both came from Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, have given the team a nice start for the year 2007.

Alonso, a Spanish Formula One racing driver and reigning, two-time, world champion, has won the World Driver’s Championship title at the age of 24 years and 58 days, hence breaking Emerson Fittipaldi’s record of being the youngest F1 champion. He also ended Michael Schumacher’s run of five consecutive championships. Hamilton, on the other hand, is a British Formula One racing driver, who has debuted at the Australian Grand Prix.

“What a great way to start the season and my career as a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver. Of course it’s always better to win but Kimi was a little bit quicker than us today, but we scored the maximum points that were possible, and I’m really pleased,” Alonso said. “My start was a bit strange with both BMWs being very quick off the line, and I was so busy defending my line from Heidfeld on the outside that it was not possible for me to defend the corner.”

He added, “I was then behind the Lewis for a while and was just focusing on keeping up with him and sometimes dropping back to allow the car to cool down. I took second after the second pitstop as I was able to stay out for an additional two laps. Originally it was meant to be one lap but because I was behind Lewis I managed to save enough fuel for one more lap. Both of the Bridgestone Potenza tyre options worked well. We will now continue to work hard to give us the best opportunity to beat Ferrari at the Malaysian Grand Prix.”

Hamilton, the first black driver to start a F1 race, said, “I’m absolutely ecstatic - today’s result is more than I ever dreamed of achieving on my Grand Prix debut. A big thank you to the team who have worked so hard during the winter to make sure I was as prepared as I possible could be. I made a good start but the BMWs were quick off the line and Kubica managed to get past. There was no room on the inside so I got on the left and managed to outbrake both Kubica and Fernando coming into the first corner to take third.”

Hamilton added, “The race was intense, and I was working very hard. I made a few mistakes but nothing major and really enjoyed myself. It was great to lead the race for a few laps, but I knew it was only a temporary thing. Fernando got past me in the second pitstop as he was able to stay out a bit longer and I lost some time behind backmarkers. We now have a lot of work ahead of us with the Malaysia test and the rest of the season, but there is no doubt that we can build from what has been achieved today.”

Norbert Haug, the vice president of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, said, “The season started well with Fernando and Lewis scoring 14 points out of 18 possible on their debut race for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. Fernando showed with his performance exactly why he is the double world champion whilst Lewis made a perfect start to his Grand Prix career and proved absolutely worthy of the confidence we have had in him for the past ten years.”

The team is looking forward to another thrilling race that boasts greater acceleration and accuracy in braking, which are more than what Active Brakes Direct could offer.

Mercedes Team Won Second and Fourth at the Melbourne F1 Race

The inaugural F1 race which took place in Melbourne, Australia over the weekend has proved to be quite a race for the reigning world champion Fernando Alonso and teammate Lewis Hamilton who finished second and fourth respectively. The F1 race was also a great opportunity for Mercedes-Benz to show the world the outstanding performance of its vehicles and that includes displaying how durable the Mercedes auto parts and accessories are like Mercedes Benz car cover which are perfect for protecting Mercedes vehicles.

From the start of the race, the duo managed to maintain their positions at the head of the pack until Alonso dropped back to fourth by the first corner while Hamilton moved into third following BMW’s Nick Heidfeld and former McLaren Mercedes driver Kimi Raikkonen.

It was only on the 14th lap that Heidfeld entered the pits for the first time giving Lewis and Fernando the opportunity to move into second and third spots. Kimi entered the pits on the 19th lap which allows the McLaren Mercedes duo to up another spot. After the 22 and 23 laps, Alonso and Lewis entered their pits for the first time and resuming their former positions as third and second respectively.

Then on lap 42 Kimi made his second pit stop, giving Lewis the chance to take the lead, unfortunately a lapped car slowed his speed enabling Fernando to close the gap between himself and his teammate. Lap 43 came and Lewis has to make a pit stop, Fernando has taken advantage of this to gain back the lead until he pitted two laps after. When he gets back on the race, Alonso was already accelerating to second place ahead of his teammate Lewis and trailing behind Kimi. These positions were maintained through the end of the race.

The F1 Race in Melbourne ended remarkably for the Team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes better than their performance last year.

Here are some of the comments during the race (source emercedesbenz.com):

—–Fernando Alonso: “What a great way to start the season and my career as a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver. Of course it’s always better to win but Kimi was a little bit quicker than us today, but we scored the maximum points that were possible, and I’m really pleased. My start was a bit strange with both BMWs being very quick off the line, and I was so busy defending my line from Heidfeld on the outside that it was not possible for me to defend the corner.

—-Lewis Hamilton: “I’m absolutely ecstatic - today’s result is more than I ever dreamed of achieving on my Grand Prix debut. A big thank you to the team who have worked so hard during the winter to make sure I was as prepared as I possible could be. I made a good start but the BMWs were quick off the line and Kubica managed to get past. We now have a lot of work ahead of us with the Malaysia test and the rest of the season, but there is no doubt that we can build from what has been achieved today.”

—-Ron Dennis, Team Principal: “Of course as always we came to Australia to win but a somewhat unexpected strategy adopted by BMW was very disruptive to our race. Following Heidfeld’s first pitstop the gap was just too big to realistically close it and the additional range from our strategy was subsequently wasted. Both drivers did an excellent job giving us a narrow lead in the Constructors’ Championship. A special thank you to the test team and the workforce back at the McLaren Technology Centre who have worked so hard during the winter and contributed so much to the faultless reliability that we have enjoyed throughout the weekend. The coming Malaysian test should give us every opportunity to further improve the competitiveness of our cars.”

—-Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “The season started well with Fernando and Lewis scoring 14 points out of 18 possible on their debut race for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. Fernando showed with his performance exactly why he is the double world champion whilst Lewis made a perfect start to his Grand Prix career and proved absolutely worthy of the confidence we have had in him for the past ten years. Although we still have to work hard to further improve our technical package, we showed today that throughout the winter we have made improvements. We will now focus on the Malaysia test and are looking forward to the next race. Thanks to everybody in the team in Woking, Brixworth and Stuttgart, all their efforts will pay off.”

Bush Visits Ford’s Kansas Plant

President George W. Bush toured Ford Motor Company’s Kansas assembly plant last Wednesday. The plant builds the first American E85 F-150 trucks and SUV hybrid electric vehicles. The President toured the hybrid assembly line and addressed more than 300 employees about the role American technology and innovation will play in delivering energy security to the country.

Bush thanked employees for being part of the solution to the country’s energy issues by building hybrid and E85 vehicles. “Technology changes the way we have lived our lives and technology is going to change the way we drive our cars,” added Bush. “You’re making a new kind of automobile that is literally a part of changing America for the better.”

Alan Mulally, the president and CEO of Ford, welcomed President Bush to the Kansas plant and thanked him for coming to see first-hand how the automaker is delivering advanced technology vehicles to address climate change and energy security. “Ford stands ready to work with the Administration and Congress to reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil,” Mulally said. “At Kansas City Assembly, we are doing some exciting things. In addition to producing the nation’s first hybrid electric SUV, we are also building the best-selling pickup truck in the world - the Ford F-150 - capable of running on E85 ethanol, gasoline or any combination of the two fuels.”

Mulally added, “We are also developing a range of advanced technologies that improve fuel efficiency, such as clean diesel, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen internal combustion engines, hydrogen fuel cells and advanced gasoline engines. These advanced technologies will help reduce green house gas emissions and lessen our dependence on foreign petroleum.”

“It is an extraordinary honor for us to welcome the President into our plant,” said Ken Ward, the plant manager of Kansas City Assembly. “Our employees had the opportunity to explain the hybrid production process and demonstrate their commitment to building the best hybrid and E85 vehicles in the world.”

The automaker earlier invested $100 million in its Kansas City plant to produce the new the conventional and hybrid Ford Escape for the 2008 model year. The Ford Escape is the world’s first hybrid SUV. Aside from the Ford Escape and the Mercury Mariner hybrid vehicles, the plant will also manufacture the first E85-capable F-150 pickup. The company also showed the president the Ford Edge which is built using the HySeries Drive. The latter is the world’s first drivable fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle offered with plug-in capability.

The vehicle also features quality auto parts like sophisticated engines and other refined auto accessories and systems that could be likened to the EBC Active Brakes Direct performance and aftermarket flexibility.

Symptoms Of Social Anxiety Disorder

If there is something that makes you think that you might be suffering from what is generally referred to as social anxiety disorder, it is advisable that you evaluate yourself and try to identify if you are really undergoing such problem. The best way to deal with it is to find out everything that is there to know about the symptoms.

But before we discuss the symptoms here, it is important to understand what anxiety disorder actually is. To put it simply, it is condition wherein one finds all such situations dreadful in which one has to interact socially.

This means that if you were to speak in a public gathering and you feel absolutely terrified, you might be suffering from social anxiety disorder. However, to be termed as a disorder this kind of “social anxiety” should be something more than the normal nervousness attached with social interaction. It has to have a rather disabling effect on you. The fear in case of social anxiety disorder is no less than overwhelming.

Coming to the symptoms, they include an accelerated heartbeat, excessive sweating, dizziness, lack of concentration and other such anxiety-related symptoms that are very much capable of disrupting one’s daily activities. These symptoms can occur in case of any normal person and the presence of them does not necessarily mean that you are suffering from social anxiety disorder.

However, if these symptoms keep recurring consistently for over six months, it is time for you to take them seriously. If there are plausible explanations for their occurrence, it is fine. But if they occur without a reasonable cause or the cause is just too feeble to justify their occurrence, you might be suffering from social anxiety disorder. And this could grow serious over the time and could make you immobilized.

In its more serious forms, the disorder can compel a person to stay at home for the most part of his day. He or she just might start fearing stepping out due to the sheer dread of socializing.

People suffering from this disorder tend to be reclusive and tend to get depressed, which may lead them to substance abuse and alcoholism. Therefore, social anxiety disorder has serious associated complications. If left uncorrected the disorder may get more complicated and bring repercussions. It is, thus, important that the problem is taken care of at the earliest. Being aware of the problem and the symptoms is half the battle won.

Five Ways in Which Hypnotherapy Can Assist Cancer Patients

In 1978 Richard Bloch, co-founder of H&R Block, was diagnosed with cancer. The prognosis was that he would be dead in three months. After two years of aggressive therapy he recovered. Wanting to make a difference in the lives of others struggling with cancer, he sold his interest in H&R Block and founded The Cancer Hotline in 1980, and the Block Cancer Support Center in 1986. He sponsored a national computer database, the Physician’s Data Query, with the latest research and treatment protocols for every known form of cancer. Today this database is operated by the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.

Richard and his wife, Annette, wrote Fighting Cancer, a book offering self-help advice. Their second book, A Guide for Cancer Supporters (these two books are free to the public; Call 1-800-CANCER) is for family and friends of those who have cancer. Both books offer inspiration and hope, encouraging cancer patients to fight to live, instead of waiting to die. These books also recommend that cancer patients supplement medical interventions with psychotherapy, guided imagery, and clinical hypnotherapy. In the 1970’s the use of such therapies in the treatment of disease was almost unheard of and to suggest such an idea bordered on heresy. Three decades later, supplemental therapies such as hypnotherapy, acupuncture, therapeutic massage, nutritional counseling, and neuro-feedback are widely considered as essentials in the holistic approach to health and the treatment of disease.

This article speaks directly to the role of hypnotherapy in treating cancer patients. Hypnotherapy was approved by the American Medical Association in 1958 as a viable adjunct to other medical treatment. Hypnotherapy is a psychological treatment that combines trance-inducing methods and relaxation with story-telling, guided imagery, and direct and indirect suggestions that guide the listener toward changes in behavior, emotions, thinking, and physical responses. Here are five ways in which hypnotherapy can help people cope with cancer.

1.-Relaxation

With the diagnosis of cancer come fears of dreadful possibilities: painful medical procedures, the side-effects of medication, the possibility of physical suffering, a shortened life span, curtailed activities, and changes in relationships. Panic and anxiety are natural and understandable responses to such fears, many of which are logical and realistic. However, panic and anxiety may only increase the symptoms and interfere with those activities that are still doable and worthwhile.

Hypnotherapy is a means of relaxation that helps one stay focused and mindful of the moment, relaxed enough to enjoy the simple pleasures that life still offers. Sleep is especially difficult with so many worries. Hypnotherapy can often induce the deep relaxation and pleasant imagery that allows a restorative night of sleep.

2.-Pain Management

With cancer, there are three sources of physical pain: The pain of the cancer’s damage to the body, the pain of medical procedures, and the pain of muscle tension that often accompanies fear or emotional distress. Pain is generally a warning to the body to take action and muscle tension is the body’s natural, fight-or-flight response to a perceived threat. When muscle tension leads to action that reduces or eliminates pain (i.e., you quickly remove your hand from a hot stove) then the tension serves a purpose. When the tension only exacerbates the pain, then the tension is not helping.

Hypnotherapy teaches a host of pain management methods that generally divert the mind’s attention elsewhere. Pain decreases when we pay less attention to it. Hypnotherapy uses relaxation, focusing exercises, and guided imagery to take the mind away from pain, thus reducing tension. A hypnotherapist will often use images and stories to suggest different ways to think about pain. For example, if a client says the pain feels like a red-hot, burning coal, the hypnotherapy session may include a short story about firemen dowsing a fire with cold water, until the fire goes away, and then a clean-up crew arrives to clear away the debris and repair the damage. Through training in self-hypnosis, cancer patients can eventually learn how to turn pain off, or at least ignore it with increasing effectiveness.

3.-Manage Fears of Medical Procedures

Let’s face it. Despite the best efforts of medical teams, clinical and hospital procedures are not fun. Surgical processes, treatments and exams are often painful, annoying, uncomfortable, and inconvenient. At times they can reduce one’s sense of dignity, privacy, and personal control. Medical procedures are especially daunting to people who associate medical processes with traumatic and painful experiences of the past and fears of what the future can hold. Some people actually develop phobias for white coats, the smell of antiseptics, or the sight of a hypodermic needle.

Hypnotherapy employs several methods to alleviate the effects of trauma and reduce fears and phobias. These desensitization methods work by pairing a state of detachment, confidence, and relaxation, with memories or images of traumatic or fear-producing events, while reminding the listener that those experiences are over and done.

4.-Recovery From Surgery

There are several studies in which hypnotherapy has been shown to reduce bleeding and swelling during surgery, as well as to minimize discomfort or nausea following surgery or chemotherapy. Surgical incisions can heal more quickly with hypnotic suggestions. In many cases hypnosis may help surgery patients cope with pain and sleep well, so they require less post-surgery medication. Some hospitals now employ hypno-anesthesiologists as part of the surgical team, for those patients who are allergic to or highly intolerant of chemical anesthesia agents.

5.-Enhanced Health and Healing

Numerous authors have spoken about the benefits of guided imagery to help cancer patients achieve healing, stronger immunity, and remission. In guided imagery, the client relaxes while the therapist describes stories and images of healing sanctuaries, healing beams of light, fountains of life, guardian angels or spiritual entities, and visions of future recovery and return to normal activity. Skeptics dismiss positive results as the placebo effect or a fluke. Perhaps they take too lightly the manner in which the brain transmits chemical messages, via the neurological pathways, that activate the body’s own healing responses.

In 1978, Stephanie Matthews-Simonton, O. Carl Simonton, and James Creighton, wrote the ground-breaking book, Getting Well Again (Bantam Books, 1984), a self-help guide for cancer patients. They told cancer patients that beliefs and attitudes play an important role in pain management and recovery. They described the value of mental relaxation and imagery. They also provided case studies in which cancer patients achieved improvement and, at times, remission, by visualizing and drawing pictures of their cancer cells being destroyed by armies of protective cells dispatched by the immune system. Patients often chose metaphoric images for these protective cells; pacman cartoon characters, knights on horseback, or toothy sharks. Amazingly, many of these pictures characterized the manner in which Natural Killer cells actually attack and destroy individual cancer cells.

In the field of psychoneuroimmunology (the study of the role of psychological processes in the treatment of disease), there are numerous recently-published books available to hypnotherapists who want to improve their skills in working with cancer patients. One is Guided Imagery (Crown House, 2000) by Rubin Battino, Adjunct Professor at Wright State University in the Department of Human Services, and President of the Milton H. Erickson Society at Dayton, Ohio. In addition to his academic duties he is a group facilitator for cancer patients at the The Charlie Brown Exceptional Patient Support Group in Dayton, Ohio.

Conclusion

Hypnosis can prove a viable part of a cancer treatment regimen. Additionally, a hypnotherapist can help the client adapt behavioral changes, such as smoking cessation, that contribute to improved health. Insurance companies now reimburse psychotherapy sessions conducted by licensed mental health practitioners who incorporate hypnotherapy, relaxation training, and guided imagery into their clinical skills. Many clinics now offer support groups for these purposes as well.

Cancer patients have more tools at their disposal than ever before, with the ability to assemble a virtual team of practitioners drawn from traditional and non-traditional disciplines. Today’s doctors are more interested in treating the whole person, not just the disease. We’ve come a long way in medical care, not just in having advanced drugs and technologies, but also in our attitudes about the mind-body aspects of illness and health. We now know that a will to live, like that displayed by Richard Bloch and so many others, often imparts the strength to endure and outstrips all that medicine can accomplish.

Citizen Journalism

Citizen Journalism” is one of the hottest buzzwords in the news business these days. Many news broadcasters are probably thinking of implementing some sort of citizen-journalism initiative; a small but growing number have already done so.

But there’s plenty of confusion about citizen journalism. What exactly is it? Is it about sending whatever pictures you click with your mobile phone to a news channel and getting famous? Or is it about speaking out on a media microphone and feel that the world has heard you?

Merinews, as India’s first citizen journalism website, takes it upon itself to define what citizen journalism is all about. But even before that let us first know why citizen journalism is so important.

In this world where every media house is driven by a motive to earn revenue, it is bound to happen that news that is important to you and me is often pushed back. Its place is taken by stories that are tailored to make us believe what they want us to believe. And thereby often we land up debating about issues that perhaps are not at all important to us but are hyped to generate revenue for the media houses.

Citizen Journalism is breaking free of this media bias. It is about writing on issues, which you feel are important. It is about telling the world your views. It is about showing everyone the world through your eyes. It is about the self-belief that your opinion does matter to thousands of others.

Perhaps, driven by this motivation of voicing their own opinion, bloggers for years, have put down their thoughts on their personal pages and we all know about their phenomenal success. But those were individual efforts and at times lack the proper credibility of sources. Merinews builds on these shortcomings and takes the voice-sharing model to a common open platform.

To give an entirely new dimension to this platform, merinews intends to build a hybrid model with a mix of pro and citizen journalism, where our editorial team will make an extra effort to add shine to all your articles as well as report issues which perhaps are unknowingly left untouched.
