If you are a business executive, then you know that it is imperative to keep accurate records of all your business transactions for tax purposes. If you are one of the many busy business executives that use air charters to fulfill part of your business transportation needs, then you might be sitting on top of a plethora of transportation deductions for your business.

The best way to determine if you can take this type of deduction is to arrange all of your receipts for business travel that you have accumulated over the past year. Divide them into two piles–the receipts that correspond to business travel, and then another pile for trips that were taken for personal, non-business related travel. The charter flights for personal trips would not be eligible for a business tax deduction because they are not business related. But be sure to take a look at them at this time. This will give you an opportunity to plan ahead for next year. Will any of these types of flights be recurring from year to year? Is there some way that any of those trips could include a business purpose? If so, then you may be able to use them next year as a business tax write-off if you can make sure that those trips were taken for a reason related to your business.

The other stack of receipts that account for your business-related travel expenses accrued from the use of air charters can be a valuable source of tax deductions for your corporation. When you take a trip to a foreign country solely for the purpose of conducting business, then you are allowed to take a tax deduction for all of your travel costs, which includes the airfare and other transportation costs as well as hotels, and you can also deduct half the cost of your meals. During times of escalating business costs, this deduction can make charter flights pay for themselves, saving your corporation much in cash outlay.

It is possible for a portion of your air charters’ fees to be deductible if you combine a business trip with a pleasure trip. If you spend several days in a foreign country, and seven days were spent entirely on business, while a few more were spent on personal travel, then you can deduct meals, lodging expenses and some incidental expenses for the days spent on business, in addition to being able to deduct all travel expenses. You can also spend some of the time for personal pursuits, but the time can equal no more than 25% of the total time spent on the entire trip. So save some money and plan ahead the next time you use charter flights.

Recently, the South by Southwest music, film, and interactive festival wrapped up after another successful year in Austin. Because it falls during spring break week, it has become my tradition to take a break from my teaching job to work for the festival at one of the music venues. It is always an interesting and enjoyable change of pace for me, and my students get a real kick out of imagining their teacher working at a club and reveling along with the music lovers and club hoppers.This year was no different.

The SXSW music festival draws over 1400 bands and more than 5000 music industry professionals to Austin, and that number doesn’t even take into account those thousands attending the film and interactive festivals which run concurrently under the SXSW banner, and Austin welcomes them all with open arms. After all, the festival pumps a hefty $30 million into the local economy, and every year, the crowds grow. At least at this time of year, Austin rightfully deserves, and proves its status as “The Live Music Capital of the World.”

Austin boasts more live music venues per capita than any other city in the U.S., and clubs of all sizes, including a church, play host to bands from all over the world during the four-night music festival. The party officially kicks off on Wednesday night with Austin’s own version of the Grammys, The Austin Music Awards. Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel, was a big winner, and Pete Townshend formerly of The Who, took the stage with fellow Brit, Ian McLagan, now a beloved Austin performer.

At my club on 6th Street, we showcased bands from New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Amsterdam, and celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with “Irish Music Night” on Saturday. Without exception, the members of the bands and their entourages were excited about playing Austin and having the opportunity to be “discovered” by a producer or promoter, or picked up by a record label. One band member excitedly informed me that after their show, they were approached to collaborate on a major motion picture soundtrack! At least during SXSW, Austin is the city where dreams really can come true.

Up and down the 6th Street entertainment district and beyond, record executives checked their schedules and hurried from club to club, munching chopped barbeque sandwiches and checking out the artists, who ranged from acoustic singer/songwriters to outrageously-dressed and spikey-coiffed punks and heavy metal screamers clad in their inevitable black garb.

Early one night, a nicely dressed middle-aged couple approached me to ask if they could buy a ticket for the show. “You must have a son or daughter performing,” I smiled, because they were definitely not your typical club hopper. Naturally, their son was playing, and the proud parents had followed him to Austin for the show and a mini-vacation all the way from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. That day had been beautiful, with the temperature hovering near 80, and we chatted for a while about their visit, and what they had seen and done while in Austin. The couple was exuberant in their praise and promised that next year they would be back for a longer vacation and would definitely be bringing friends.

Later that evening, a woman from the UK dropped in to thank me for recommending Maria’s Taco Express, one of my favorite haunts, and invited me to an after-hours private party in a hotel penthouse nearby. I thanked her, but had to decline, because this golden carriage that is SXSW has to turn back into a pumpkin by Monday morning, and I had some lesson plans to write.

Charter flight - the idea of hiring out an aircraft - is different from commercial flight in that the former makes unscheduled flights to destinations specified by the passenger(s) who purchase the service. As such, it is not bound by many burdensome regulations as are commercial airlines, which are large, publicly-owned corporations that deal in high volume of traffic and are limited as to where they can go. In addition, commercial passengers are subject to time-consuming security checks and regulations, adding a great deal of time and hassle when it comes to their flights. When you fly aboard a charter jet or turbo-prop plane, you can go where you want, when you want, in far greater comfort than commercial airliners in which people are often packed in like so many sardines. Traveling by private jet is also much faster, and can be available to you through NetJet with as little as four hours’ advance notice.

Sometimes, a charter flight is the only way to get somewhere. For instance, many remote places in Alaska and Northwestern Canada are accessible only by foot, horseback or charter flight. In this case, it is unlikely you will travel by private jet. Flights of this type are usually by piston-engine or turbo-prop plane. If you have ever seen the television series Northern Exposure or the feature film Never Cry Wolf, you have probably seen how some of these flights were in the old days. Even the smallest prop planes today allow passengers to travel in far greater safety and comfort than ever before. With the increasing interest in eco-tourism - traveling to ecologically sensitive areas or the planet in order to see unusual and exotic flora and fauna in a way that minimizes impact on the local environment - usually involves charter flight as well. However, in the case of these kinds of flights, charter is usually done through a travel agency that specializes in these kinds of tours.

Gluten is a protein that is found in barley, rye, and wheat and is included in everyday foods such as cakes, breads, cereals, pastas and biscuits. Some condiments such as mustard, mayonnaise, malt vinegar, as well as alcoholic beverages such as beer and whiskey, also contain gluten. Easter gifts have a long and fascinating history. Gifting is tied to the holiday known as Easter, and ancient Pagan rituals focused at this time of year upon the renewal of the earth, the upcoming green new growth that the emerging sunlight and warmer weather encouraged, and the idea of birth and rebirth. The egg is a symbol of all of these ideas, and was adopted by and still is used in Christian Easter celebrations to this day.

To start, eggs were painted and decorated and used as gifts. They were given as a romantic gift to admirers, as well as to servants and children. People of Eastern Orthodox faiths made this tradition their own by dying their eggs red to symbolize Christ’s blood, and on Easter day they would crack the eggs, to represent Christ breaking out of the tomb. As technology improved, there were hollow eggs crafted from cardboard that were filled with smaller gifts, typically food items. Hollow eggs were also formed from sugar, and were decorated with sugar royal icings. Perhaps the ultimate gift egg was the Faberge egg, which was studded with real jewels and was given originally as a gift for the Czar of Russia. Around this time chocolate easter eggs were created, and soon became a favorite holiday tradition. As an extension of the egg, the chick was also associated with Easter, and today children will often find marshmallow chicks as a gift that was linked to the original prominence of the egg in the Easter celebration.

This tradition also traces back to early Pagan traditions. You may not want to use this service, but it is the number one method of payment for online auctions, and any good seller will offer it.

Every few years someone rediscovers the blues. Pop music, that stuff you hear on most commercial radio stations, is a business. The idea is to make lots of money by selling music like it was toothpaste. You find something everybody likes and then have competitive products that are a little different but all basically do the same thing and even though they taste a little different not enough different to bother anyone. That’s pop music.

Now and again the public gets pretty tired of the same old stuff and pop music needs a little kick in the pants. Rediscovering some old form of American music most people have forgotten about and bring it out as the next new thing usually does the trick. It could be Country or Jazz or Bluegrass, but quite often it is the Blues.

The difference between pop music and genre music like the Blues is that there is a much smaller audience for the genre music, but that audience is always very loyal, keeping it going while others ignore it. Blues, being the very root of all roots music, is an obvious choice to gain inspiration from when things are getting a little stale and it’s always there in the background just waiting to be found.

In the first half of the twentieth century much of the most popular music was Blues based or at least heavily influenced by it. From Big Band Swing to Jazz to even Country music, Blues played an important part in their developments.

There were many so-called “Blues Revivals” in the last half of the twentieth century. The most recent big one was in the mid 1980’s when there was a sudden explosion of new Blues societies and festivals all around the United States. When these revivals happen it usually means that the loyal fan base of the music is expanded by the addition of people who come from other genres who grow to see similarities between what they like and the Blues. Often times it is these new folks who determine the direction the music will take in order for it to reach a broader audience.

The most famous example of this was the birth of Rock and Roll. By the mid 1950’s Blues music had lost much of its original black audience, which had moved on to R&B and early Soul. What seemed like something new was just a mixing bag of styles taken from Country, Swing, and mostly from Jump Blues and R& B. This is pretty much how all new musical styles come about. When you mix up a bunch of stuff in a pot and cook it awhile, the soup you end up with has tastes from all its ingredients, but there is always one flavor that stands out. Blues is usually that rich flavor.

In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s another less obvious revival took place with the popularity of Folk Music. This is an often neglected but very important revival because it was a time of rediscovery and reconnection with the old guard Blues musicians. Young Folk performers were the ones who researched the old country Blues and actually sought out and rediscovered many of the old Blues performers. They learned from those originators, wrote about them, got them performing again, and taught others what they had learned through books, tapes, and nowadays videos. They truly “Kept the Blues alive” in every sense of the words.

In the mid 1960’s Blues made an even greater impact on Pop Music when both American and British musicians discovered the power of electric Blues through second generation Bluesmen such as Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf. Rock and Roll became just Rock when lead guitar styles based on Blues improvisations came to the forefront. The Blues this time was the grittier sounding Delta style. Rock became harder sounding with Blues as it’s base. That has never gone away.

There was another small Blues revival at the end of the 1970’s when the Blues Brothers made Blues hip again. That revival created careers for some new young players and brought some of the old Blues guys back out on the road. It was the availability of all these varied acts that made the revival of the mid 1980’s possible.

Blues has always been a bit of a secret ingredient in pop music and even pop culture. It’s used to revive careers and sell blue jeans. Every once in awhile it gets pretty cool again. Unfortunately, since something being cool is a short-term state of mind, Blues music has again begun to drift into the genre music status with a diminishing audience. Though there are still many Blues Festivals, they tend to lean toward Rock Blues, leaving the true Blues lover longing for another shot of more traditional stuff. Don’t worry, Blues never really goes away. It will be back.

When I first began researching information on various hospitals across the United States, I came across many hospitals that offered a variety of Centers of Excellence. I was curious as to what constituted a Center of Excellence as opposed to just listing a program as a specialty service, so I decided to research this as well.

What I found out was that a Center of Excellence essentially means that a hospital specializes in the treatment of a certain illness or specializes in particular treatments. Centers of excellence can be anything from heart or cancer care to neurosurgery or organ transplants. Some hospitals offer a variety of Centers of Excellence whereas other hospitals might just offer one or two.

It was more difficult to find out how a hospital was able to claim the distinction of having a Center of Excellence. From what I could gather, each individual program and treatment has particular criteria that needs to be met in order for the hospital to state that their program is a Center of Excellence. They might require that the treatments be performed by a certain type of doctor or that a certain amount of treatments are performed annually.

I also found that different health care programs and health insurance programs will also designate a program of a hospital as a Center of Excellence based on their own criteria. This might mean that they are more likely to recommend this hospital as opposed to another hospital. They do this as a service to the patients who have their insurance to help them make an informed decision about which program is right for them. If you have a question about a particular hospitals Center of Excellence designation, you should ask them about how they received the designation and who gave it to them.
