In Australia in 1860, two men, Burke and Wills, led an expedition as ambitious as the Lewis and Clark expedition in North America. But this one ended in tragedy.

After weeks of exploration, the main expedition arrived back at the base camp only to find that it was deserted. There was a sign carved on a tree that read “DIG 3FT NW”. The sign meant that they should dig three feet northwest from the tree to find the provisions that were buried there.

The provisions were there, the signs were there, but Burk and Wills did not understand what the signs meant and so they died a horrible death from thirst and starvation.

In business, entrepreneurs are like explorers. Lewis and Clark were successful. They survived. Burk and Wills were not. They died. Who do you want to be like?

This same tragedy gets repeated with businesses today. The way to survive it there, but business owners fail to read the signs. Those signs are called key performance indicators, or KPI’s. If you are not measuring you are not managing. Make sure that you are measuring right things the right way.
For example, if a customer is worth $10,000 a year and average lifecycle is 5 years, then they are worth $50,000. So if it costs $1,000 to get a new customer and $200 per year to retain them it is a great deal. There are several KPI’s here. Cost of acquiring a customer, cost of keeping the customer, sales value of the customer per year, lifecycle of the customer. And notice that it costs 5 times to win a new customer verses keeping a customer.

What are the activities that must take place in the marketing and sales cycle that can be measured? Advertising cost, number of responses to advertising, appointments set, requests for quotation, number of sales, sales revenue. These are all opportunities to measure what is going on in your process. Develop meaningful targets at each stage in the process and compare them to your current performance. If your people are not meeting these KPI’s you need to find out why. These are signs that your business needs improvement.

You have an advantage that Burk and Wills never did. They did not have someone that they could ask to help them understand what the signs meant. You do. There are coaches that you can ask for help. The signs are there, and KPI’s can be set up so you can measure right things the right way, and avoid the equivalent fate of Burk and Wills.

There is a right way and a wrong way to market your products via email. Of course the wrong way is to purchase a list and spam people with your offers. Stay away from this type of thing, it will get your website shutdown when someone complains about you spamming them. The right way would be to have people optin to your list. This is known as permission email marketing.

Here’s how it works. You would put a form on your website that would allow people to optin to your newsletter or ezine. A newsletter is simply an email that is sent periodically to your list with updated information about your website. An ezine is basically the same except it is generally published on your website and pulled in through an email and gives the email a look of your website. The subscriber can view the ezine from your website or through an email while the newsletter is in plain text and generally is not published on the website.

Your newsletter or ezine would be loaded into your autoresponder and sent out periodically depending on how often you choose to send your subscribers updates. You would add your offers to the newsletter or ezine that you send out to your subscribers.

The biggest thing that you want to do when sending out a newsletter or ezine is that you send your subscribers useful information on the topic for which they subscribed. If you send useless information they will opt out of your list.

Always include a unsubscribe link and the reason why you sent them an email. Many people tend to forget what or whom they subscribed to. Include a link to your website so that your subscribers can follow it back to your website. If your autoresponder has a timestamp, use it. It will protect you by giving proof that the person did subscribe to your list by giving the date they subscribed. This will be very important if someone complains about you spamming.

The bamboo plant is not just a simple plant, it plays a major role in the life of thousands of people and animals. One million people live in bamboo houses, for hundreds of thousands it is the primary source of income. The bamboo plant is the habitat for many animals and for some it even is the only source of food.

Bamboo plants enjoy increasing popularity. Its advantages are compelling. Its tensile strength compares to that of steel. It grows extremely fast and needs no care. It is the fastest growing grass which makes it to a very cheap resource. You chop it down and it comes back quicker than any other plant. It can also grow very high, some types of bamboo plants can grow 60 feet high.

After treatment, bamboo is a very hard wood but it is also light and very tough. No wonder that bamboo plants have been used in construction since centuries. The commercial value of bamboo goes into the billions each year. There are far more than 1500 different types of bamboo but only about 40 are commercially used.

Bamboo was and still is used to build houses and even bridges. It is used to produce closets, furniture, carpets, matts, shades, fences, art and many other things. It even is used in medicine to treat several diseases. In China bamboo fibres were used to make paper.

Bamboo is very common in Asia but its increasing popularity in Europe and America is no surprise. More and more people like using bamboo in their gardens for example. It grows compact and fast and is always green. That makes it to a perfect, natural and cheap fence.

Its strength and look makes bamboo valuable for flooring as well. While not always cheap, bamboo flooring is a real alternative and available in a vast variety.

Bamboo is a very robust grass. It needs no care and spreads easily. All you need to do is to care for enough water and cut them back when they spread too much or grow too high. If you look to cultivate bamboo in your garden you should do some research beforehand. There are different types of bamboo plants and once planted it can be difficult to remove.

And lets not forget the lucky bamboo plant. In China you can find it in almost any household because the legend says it brings luck to the bearer and energizes the place where it is. But hold. Lucky bamboo is not a bamboo but just a simple house plant. However, it looks like bamboo and since it brings luck, we keep calling it lucky bamboo.

Unfortunately bamboo plants are in danger because the increasing population is the major cause for the reduction of the bamboo forests. Bamboo is a tough grass and with the increasing awareness of the many advantages, bamboo plants should be here forever.

Joan Lynn has written several articles about the bamboo plant, lucky bamboo and the variety of bamboo plants which have been published in ezines and also on her web site.

Identity Theft - Who Is The Weakest Link In The Chain

‘Identity Theft’ is a term used for the event when some bad guy steals your sensitive information without your knowledge, misuses it and tries to harm you financially.

For example Mr. ‘X’ is checking his e-mails as usual and when he opens his inbox, he finds an email saying that it is from the company he purchased some stuff last week from.
To process some information they need his credit card no. Mr. ‘X’ replies to the message with all the information asked. This company disappears suddenly and Mr. ‘X’ gets the heavy amount of bill this month, all what he did not buy. Mr. ‘X’, completely unaware what went wrong goes into depression.

This was a simple example, where we tried to explain how bad guys can steal your sensitive information and give you a nightmare.

Some people may think that online identity theft is quite impossible as almost every bank spends thousands of dollars on Internet security now a days .
But sad to say, we have to understand that in this chain ‘humans’ are the weakest link.

Another term for this kind of identity theft is called as ‘Phishing’ or ‘Social Engineering’.
There are a lot of ways that bad guys can approach you to steal your sensitive information.

Please bear some basic rules in mind to avoid identity theft.
Never ever give your credit card number in any sort of online communication like chatting or email, no matter, who asks for it.

Be very careful when you handover your credit card to others for bill payments etc.
Always remember that only card number, its expiry date and some 4 digits at the back of your card are enough to make any online transaction.

So be very careful and handover your card to others only under your supervision.
That will help you a lot.

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Mohandas Gandhi

Too many managers want to carry a big stick and forget they are really on the same team as their employees. Twenty-first century organizations cannot afford managers who don’t look at the big picture. For example, downsizing helps many companies in the short-term. However, sooner or later it hurts them if they don’t analyze the long term consequences. In light of this reality, how do leaders decide whether to buy in on the newest management fads?

Let’s focus on outsourcing as an example. Lisa Robinson Davis, management strategist, argues that before a company outsources, it needs to foster good relationships with workers if they want success. Handy, an organizational strategist, defines this relationship as another paradox. Workers want the most money while organizations want to pay the least. Outsourcing then becomes the management’s solution to this matter.

However, without thinking strategically, an organization can be the loser over the long run. When managers initiate outsourcing without the concern of employees, they lose their employees’ respect. Although some U.S. companies are concerned about the impact of outsourcing, others are not.

Outsourcing can become a relationship-breaker in the leader-follower relationship.
Clearly, credibility is an issue. Maxwell, author of Today Matters, argues that an individual’s core values are the deeply held beliefs that authentically describe a person’ soul. Kouzer and Posner, authors of Credibility, note that the majority of individuals admire leaders who are honest, inspiring, and competent.

Conversely, credibility of a leader is what drives employees to do more they than they are required to do for their jobs. In an age where ethics appear to be lowering, managers need to be caught doing the right thing. Therefore, integrity is important if an organization wants to implement a new business approach and convince employees to buy in.

Just imagine.

  • Pine scented forest trails that go on for mile after mile.
  • Rocky goat tracks ablaze with colourful Spring flowers and wild herbs.
  • Breathtaking views from hill tops gazing into valleys below.
  • Tiny churches hidden from view which always surprise in their simplicity and remoteness.
  • An ideal climate to enjoy all forms of outdoor activity all year round.
  • And pretty mountain villages where time has stood still and the traditional way of life still reigns.
  • All this and much more can be found in Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean. Yet the vast majority of visitors to the island still see Cyprus as just a summer sun destination and many never leave their resort to discover
the outdoor paradise that lies within.

If you are an outdoor lover whether walker, cyclist, watersports enthusiast or just a plain lover of nature, then head for the far west of the island, where even the coastline remains unspoilt by modern development. Base yourself near the town of Polis on the north west of the island and immerse yourself in the pine forest nearby or explore the beauty of the wild and rugged Akamas peninsula. Here you can indulge in the thrill of mountain biking or hike the many trails on the peninsula.

And when you are done with the forest and the Akamas, there are countless, gorgeous valleys to explore, many with dams nestling at the foot of the valley. And where there’s a dam, there’s a watercourse and that means lots of streams and many rivers to cross…though by late Summer many are bone dry. Our favourite streams are those that run under the many venetian bridges on the island. They start in the Troodos mountain area and there is a fantastic route through the Troodos forest which takes in all the bridges.

Of course, being in the great outdoors can make you really hungry and what better way to finish off a hike or bike in the forest than with a lazy, late taverna lunch in one of the many mountain villages. The simplest fare will satisfy even the biggest apetite and it definately won’t break the bank.
Or just take a picnic and find your own private corner of this magical island - your very own secret Cyprus.

In the highly competitive world of mobile phones, it’s not juts important to have the best features or the latest technology. Style and design play just as important a role to today’s savvy consumers - if the phone doesn’t look good in their hand, then there’s a pretty good chance that phone simply won’t be bought. With their new D900 mobile phone, Samsung appear to have all bases covered.

A continuation of their popular slim slide series, the D900 combines both a wealth of features and a small, unassuming design. That’s not to say that the phone doesn’t stand out - if Samsung have learned anything over the course of the last two to three years, it’s how to design an aesthetically pleasing phone. At only 13mm deep, the slide screen of the one is one of the slimmest on the market today, yet doesn’t feel any less sturdy for it.

Despite the relatively small size of the unit itself, the D900 still manages to incorporate one of the largest mobile phones screens around. It can do this because, with the use of the sliding screen, it hides all the user buttons underneath the slide, only leaving the most basic of buttons on the front of the phone itself. With 256,000 colors on the display, pictures and films are presented in an extremely high definition. With the multimedia aspects of the phone, such as a TV output function, or streaming videos using its built-in software, this is extremely welcome.

The camera on the Samsung D900 is a fairly impressive one, too. Although it won’t stand up to the best that specialized digital cameras can offer, at 3.13 mega pixels it’s still more than enough to give you crystal clear photographs. And with 80MB of memory as standard, with the option of using external memory cards, there’s an awful lot of space to store your budding masterpieces on.

Yet the fun doesn’t stop there - as well as an impressive collection of video features, including video recording and messaging, the D900 also stands out with its audio features. Supporting MP3 as well as AAC and AAC+, the sound is CD-quality and allows you to set up your favorite songs as the ring tone. Just be sure not to pick one that’s going to annoy everyone on the Tube when your mobile phone goes off!

Everyone’s heard of Bluetooth now and the fun that can be had swapping files with your friends or work colleagues, and the Samsung D900 doesn’t disappoint here either. It combines this with USB support as well as Pictabridge software, ensuring you not only get the best results when taking a picture, or filming, but that they’re easy to share as well.

With all the features that the Samsung D900 has, not to mention the sleek black styling that will look good anywhere, you can see why this continues to be one of the most popular models in the mobile phone market today.

Live in Japan and ever dreamed of having your own company? Rather than working for the big chain schools and making them rich, why not work on your own financial future and start your own private English school. It’s easier than you think.

But there are so many schools out there, it’s too crowded and it’s too difficult to get new students, you may say.

Whilst Japan might not have the immediate growth potential of China, Korea or even language teaching in US, and there is so much more competition, it is still a hugely positive and as yet still untapped market. For example:

    * Kids Lessons: With the recent comments from the Education Minister, compulsory English in Elementary School has been delayed for a least a year, probably two and maybe longer if the current Prime Minister stays in power. This has taken away a huge, free, competitor.

    * Adults Classes: Every time I sit in a coffee shop I can almost guarantee that the conversation of at least one group around me will turn to “I’d like to speak English”, and invariably ends with “But it’s so scary approaching a school”. These are usually women in their 20s or 30s who don’t have to, but would like to learn English in a casual, relaxed way. Where are the easy-to-walk-in-to-for-just-a-chat-about-joining schools?

    * Silver Eikaiwa: There’s a huge market of “silver” (the Japanese word of the moment!) retirees with cash to spend and a thirst for travel. How many silver courses are there out there?

For the actual mechanics of setting up a business there are hundreds of books and websites, just do a quick google search.. What you then need is the best product (i.e. really good lessons), fantastic service and great pricing. That’s not to say building your own school is super easy, but it’s almost always worthwhile. Finding other teachers is very tough, but if you’re happy to be the main teacher yourself, you’ll have a very viable business set up in no time. Advertising is easy; it will all be word of mouth from super satisfied students.

Pricing is a big part of it, and that’s where the art and magic is. You’ll always have customers who say “That’s too expensive” or “Why don’t you do everything for free?”. In most cases those customers wouldn’t buy the product even if it was free. But look at those women in the coffee shop talking about wanting to learn English. If you ask them they may say they can’t afford lessons maybe, but they are sat there sipping 400 yen cappuccinos that only cost 50 yen to make! The key is the extras that you give. At Starbucks you don’t pay for the coffee, you pay for the ambience, the artwork, the music, the sofas and the Wi-fi. AND they also have the best coffee in town. You need both.

I’ve seen some pictures of schools on the net and as an adult learner some of them would make me run a mile (bright white lighting, straight boring desks) and some of them just look so inviting that I’d sign up for lessons just to enjoy the atmosphere!
You just have to make sure that if you charge XXXX for a lesson, the student walks away with XXXX + alpha worth of value. It’s the extras, the smiles, the lollipops for adult learners (not for kids anymore sadly!), the interesting artwork on the walls, the personal attention, the music in the lobby, the jokes, the atmosphere that make this extra bonus.

Japan’s a great place to be, teaching can be a great way to make a good income and unlike selling arms to Africa or anything like that, you’re always making a difference in the World, you just have to decide how big you want it to be.

The Internet has two great uses, one is for globalization of market and the other is for research and information. With the help of the Internet, you can put your business on the global market in an instant; and you can research any topic under the sky with ease and scholarly thoroughness. In this manner, the Internet is a great boon. However, as for every good side there is a bad side, there is a downside here as well. Accessing the Internet opens the door to a host of activities that you might not be aware of, such as the recording of all the sites you visited in certain hidden (and retractable) files in your PC, hidden downloads that happens automatically without your approval or knowledge, when you visit certain sites and so on.

How do you prevent such invasion of privacy and protect your computer at the same time? The answer to this concern would be the installation of the Neteraser software, which is designed to erase all such hidden entry that keeps track of which sites you visited and when.

The Neteraser software can be downloaded and used for free. Only when you use it and it shows how many files have been created tracking your whereabouts over the Net, you will realize how invaluable this excellent software actually is. The Neteraser software enables you to scan the computer thoroughly and get yourself rid of all the proof of your visits to sites that are not permitted or restricted at your home or office, such as porn, gambling, etc.

Majority of the Neteraser software available today works well with almost all web browser programs like Netscape, Internet Explorer, FireFox and Opera. Another useful feature of Neteraser software is that it permits you to delete your history one by one in case you do not want to delete it all indiscriminately. It is also possible to have all the cookies removed from your computer with the help of the Neteraser software, or only those that are not required. In this way, you will be able to both protect and speed up your computer a great deal.

Downloading the Neteraser software would help you to surf the Internet without any worry that you will get in trouble at any point of time having all those unwanted files recorded in to the system.

Repetition isn’t necessarily a bad thing in poetry. There are ways to use it without sounding redundant. It means more than repeating the same words or phrases. It also refers to using sounds or patterns that are common throughout the poem.

Sometimes, repetition is so subtle that it’s not recognized instantly. It’s better when an author creates a poem and the reader doesn’t see what’s coming next. The last thing you want is to have your readers tired from reading recurring lines or words. The best advice I can give you is to keep your readers intrigued by using your repetition in a flavorful way.

For example, sestinas use repetition but if it’s done the correct way there’s nothing tiring about hearing the words being used more than once. Every line can sound fresh if a little creativity is put behind the poem.

Sestinas can be a tough challenge to master. It’s made up of seven stanzas, the first six stanzas have six lines, while the seventh stanza has only three lines. There is a very precise and complicated pattern to the sestina’s stanzas. However, since there isn’t a rhyming pattern or a specific meter to follow there’s still a lot of freedom in this form.

The first stanza determines the rest of your poem; the six words you use at the end each line will be repeated in different places throughout the rest of the poem. Even though you are using the repetition of words, your poem won’t sound redundant if you use your words wisely.

The second stanza is created by taking the last six words you used in your first stanza and placing them in a certain order. Here’s the breakdown of your second stanza:

The last word in the last line of your first stanza ends the first line in the second stanza.
The last word in the second line of your first stanza ends the fourth line in the second stanza.
The last word in the third line of your first stanza ends the last line in your second stanza.
The last word in the fourth line of your first stanza ends the last line in your fifth stanza.
The last word in the fifth line of your first stanza ends the last line in your third stanza.
The last word in the last line of your first stanza ends the first line in your second stanza.

    Sestina Format

The end words rotate their position with each of your new stanzas in the following pattern.

    First Stanza- ABCDEF

    Second Stanza- FAEBDC

    Third Stanza- CFDABE

    Fourth Stanza- ECBFAD

    Fifth Stanza- DEACFB

    Sixth Stanza- BDFECA

Seventh Stanza- There are three lines, using the last three ending words, and then the other three inside each line in no particular order.

If you’re ever up for a challenge try your hand at writing a sestina. The outcome is very rewarding and feels like quite the accomplishment.
