I looked at my bottle of shampoo today and my hair stood on end before I even washed it. The front label states “Vitamin E Moisture Rich Shampoo - Professional performance formula”, but what I read on the back made me wonder about the volume of potential poisons I’ve been flushing into the environment over the last 3 decades, simply through washing my hair.

Having a blackwater system now for recycling our household waste water has also made me a little more conscious about this kind of thing. If we put chemicals down our drains that upsets the good bacteria, they can’t do their job properly in chewing up all the nasties. Throw it out of balance, and restoring the balance can take a long while.

Here are the ingredients of my shampoo and what I discovered.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate - used in clinical testing as a primary skin irritant. Tests on lab animals indicate material may cause mutagenic effects.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine - potential irritant and potentially contaminated with or breaking down into chemicals linked to cancer.

Ammonium Chloride - Harmful if swallowed. May be harmful by inhalation. Skin, eye and respiratory irritant

Tocopheryl Acetate - Vitamin E

Camellia Sensis Leaf Extract - OK depending on extraction process

Fennel - OK depending on extraction process

Fruit Extract - Hrm.. depending on extraction process

Epilobium Angustifolium Extract - OK depending on extraction process

Sunflower Extract - OK depending on extraction process

Hazel leaf Extract - OK depending on extraction process

Sweet Almond fruit extract - OK depending on extraction process

Panthenol - Vitamin B5

Cocodimonium Hydroxypropyl Hydrolized wheat protein - not sure

Quaternium-22 - May contain harmful impurities or form toxic breakdown products

Butylene Glycol - not assessed for safety by Cosmetics Ingredient Review board

Propylene Glycol - allows other chemicals to penetrate into the skin, suspected Respiratory, Skin or sense organ, Immunotoxicity and Neurotoxicity hazards

Polyquaternium-10 - a mildly irritating toxic polymer

Sodium Chloride - common salt

Tetrasodium EDTA - allows other chemicals to penetrate into the skin

Citric Acid - OK depending on extraction process

Hexylene Glycol - neurotoxin, sensitizer and irritant

Triethanolomine - may contain residual levels of nitrosamines, a carcinogen

Methylchloroisothiazolinone -immune system toxin, lung sensitizer.

Geraniol - not assessed for safety by Cosmetics Ingredient Review board

Butylphenyl Methylpropional - not assessed for safety by Cosmetics Ingredient Review board

Linalool - not assessed for safety by Cosmetics Ingredient Review board

Hexyl Cinnamal - not assessed for safety by Cosmetics Ingredient Review board

Limonene - a hydrocarbon that poses potential risks to wildlife and the environment through water contamination. Carcinogen to some animals

Fragrance (I hate to think)

Before I start sounding overly paranoid, I’m well aware that everything is made up of chemicals - even natural ingredients. 2 potentially nasty chemicals can also combine to make something quite safe and useful - e.g.; sodium + chloride = salt. The type and level of chemical hazard does also greatly depend on quantity and manufacturing - but the point is, they are being manufactured; in bulk - and that in itself poses huge risks for the environment. Nature may produce similar chemicals, but it’s a natural process in harmony with the planet and environment.

So, do I really need the above chemical shampoo cocktail to wash my hair? No. After all that, I think I’ll just stick with vegetable soap until I find a more earth-friendly shampoo. I really don’t need “body and bounce” anyway since I have short hair.

What does your shampoo bottle say? Could you be unwittingly poisoning yourself and the environment? Research the ingredients listed on your shampoo bottle.

Does the statement Jesus makes in Mark 12:31, which reads: “And the second is like, namely this, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” provide us with a commandment to learn to love ourselves in order to be able to love others? This interpretation of this passage has been utilized by those wishing to support and propel the concept of self esteem as being biblical and necessary for us in order to have healthy relationships. The argument typically is: “You must first be able to love yourself in order to truly be able to love others” and “the reason you are having difficulty loving others is that you have difficulty loving yourself.” There are a few that are not quite so forward in teaching self esteem when using this verse, they will say that Jesus assumes a healthy self love in the verse and consequently being able to love yourself is still a prerequisite of being able to love your neighbor. But is this what Jesus intended when answering the question put to him by the scribes? Is self esteem needed for healthy relationships? Would God desire that we spend time learning to love ourselves?

A closer reading of the passage in Mark shows us something completely different from the interpretation of those that co-opt this verse for the self-esteem movement. The question put to Jesus was “what is the greatest commandment?” His response was the greatest commandment is “to love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind, and all your strength; and the second is like, namely this, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” What is being taught here is a completely consuming passion for pursuit of something outside of self. First is the all consuming pursuit of God and secondly a genuine love for your neighbor. The focus of text is outside of self and on God and others. This interpretation (a focus outside of self) of the text is far more consistent with teaching found throughout the Bible. The teaching found in Philippians chapter two in which we are to have the Mind of Christ who emptied himself, took on the form of a servant, and suffered a cruel death runs in sharp contrast to any teaching that would encourage self love. The statement of Jesus Himself in which he says the he who would be first should be last is also a contrast to self-love. The notion that we should spend time learning to love ourselves is in sharp contrast to the rest of the teaching of the Bible. It does not take much to see that the Bible would have us understand that we are a broken people, stained through and through by sin (Isaiah 64:6 and Romans 3:10-18). Hence, the notion that Jesus would be teaching self-love, directly or indirectly, in this verse is a bad interpretation of the verse.

In contrast to this notion of self-love is the love and acceptance of God in light of this broken and sinful state. It is in this state that the love of God extended to us through Christ becomes a magnificent and necessary gift. If I am a super guy, what need do I have of God’s grace? What I really need to know is that through Christ I can experience the fullness of God’s love and acceptance of me. It is in that light that I then obtain worth, not because of some innate qualities but because of the relationship offered to me. I can then be more comfortable in my own skin, flaws and all. I am then free to relate to others with less concern about what they think or how they feel as I am less consumed with myself. As I relate freely to others, I get a better response from others and am able to feel their acceptance, the very thing I desire.

It appears that the question becomes more complicated when we consider those that genuinely suffer from “low self esteem”. These individuals truly feel very negatively about themselves and at times dislike or even loath themselves. It seems evident that these individuals could use a healthy dose of self esteem, but is this what they really need? Spending time with people who suffer low self esteem will reveal some truths about these people. People who suffer low self-esteem are frequently consumed by thoughts of self, mostly negative, but a very self-focused thought life nonetheless. They frequently are comparing themselves to others and finding themselves coming up short in the comparison. They are very worried about how others are viewing them and how others feel and think about them. They become consumed with fears of failure in their efforts and their social interactions, fearful of rejection. The issue seems to be more complex than simply what they think of themselves but more so the interplay between themselves and what they believe others are going to think of them or their ability to succeed. The self-esteem movement has sought to remedy this by building up the individual’s self-concept to be more positive and out of that, they believe the person’s assumptions about other people’s reactions to them would be positive. But has this really worked?

The unfortunate answer is no. For people who really struggle with this self consumption, it is very difficult for them to see the positive in themselves. The overwhelming reason is that they really desire to receive that recognition from those around them. You can reassure them that they are really OK people, encourage them to not be so hard on themselves and to list their strengths, but what they really want is to feel that acceptance from others. For people who do not suffer from a severely negative self-image, self-esteem teaching has fostered individual with an inflated sense of their ability and worth. The teaching of knowing our position with God through Christ, knowing this love and acceptance then allows the individual to feel valued. This is in contrast learning to love myself because I have some really wonderful qualities. As I work to get my focus off myself, I become less concerned (less self-aware) with the responses of others and am able to interact more freely. I appear more confident. This confidence will almost always produce a more positive outcome in my interactions and I will begin to experience the acceptance I have always craved and worked so hard to earn. I am freed to begin to really experience being loved and valued for who I am, with warts and all, by God and by others. I don’t have to understand it to experience it and I don’t have to work to love myself to make it a reality.

By getting my focus off myself and onto God’s love for me and the needs of others I am less self-consumed. I begin to realize that I can be accepted just as I am, no longer controlled by my need to be reassured and accepted by others. Jesus doesn’t teach the need to love yourself, He teaches you to love God and others above yourself.

No one knows the exact causes of breast cancer. Doctors are careful when discussing reasons why one woman would experience breast cancer while another, in the same family or circle of friends would be cancer free.

American Cancer Society researchers have documented there is a growing connection between breast cancer and obesity - especially abdominal and upper-body obesity. For example, almost half of all breast cancer cases occur in obese women.

Also, cancerous breast tumors are notoriously hard to find in young women with more than 15-20 percent excess body fat. Exactly how severe overweight leads to breast cancers is not yet known. The link between body mass index and breast cancer is mostly statistical. “We can see it, but we don’t understand exactly why it exists.”

The potential health risks for women who are overweight or obese are not limited to breast cancer. Heart disease is a killer of more women than any other single malady. Take a look at a report from the American Heart Association:

“Obesity is now recognized as a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, which can lead to heart attack. Some reasons for this higher risk are known, but others are not. For example, obesity;

  • Raises blood cholesterol and triglyceride (tri-GLIS’er-id) levels. lowers HDL “good” cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is linked with lower heart disease and stroke risk, so reducing it tends to raise the risk.
  • Raises blood pressure levels.
  • Can induce diabetes. In some people, diabetes makes these other risk factors much worse. The danger of heart attack is especially high for these people.
  • Even when there are no adverse effects on the known risk factors, obesity by itself increases risk of heart disease. It also harms more than just the heart and blood vessel system. It’s a major cause of gallstones and can worsen degenerative joint disease.”
  • Let’s get right to the heart of the matter. There are few who would doubt that being overweight is less than advantageous for a number of reasons, including the serious potential health risks. What complicates the issue is most individuals have little success with diets and other attempts at losing weight.

When the question of long term weight loss success is asked there are less than 5% of all dieters who can report they have been successful at keeping weight off.

What is not wide spread knowledge is there are so-called secrets of dieting that many in the mainstream have not tapped into. Take it from me, I’ve been counseling men and women in weight loss techniques since 1980 and I’ve had my share of losers in the finest sense of the word.

Losing weight for most people is a conscious process from start to finish. What I mean by this is most people think of what they are going to do to lose weight and plan their approach in a focused manner that differs little each time they start a diet.

The mind actually has two chambers that process information and provide for other functions. The problem for most dieters is they are placing too much of the focus for their success on the conscious mind. It is the subconscious mind that must handle the major part of the change process. To balance this process to help increase my client’s rate of success, I prepared a simple list of success tips.

Using subconscious processes is much simpler when one has a coach. However, my client’s have experienced great results with a tip sheet I provide. I give this list of 5 simple tips to newbies who are trying self-hypnosis or hypnosis for the first time.

While no hypnosis is involved, my success rate has averaged 85% for those who follow the deceivingly simple looking tips for weight loss beginners. Take a look at the list and spend 10 to 15 minutes for the next 5 days just reading my 5 most important tips over and over to yourself. You will be amazed at what you’ll notice in the next 7 to 10 days.

  • Decide on how much weight you want to lose over the next 30 days and write it down on a 3X5 card. Once you’ve written it down promise yourself to look at the number 3 times a day for the next 30 days (in the morning, at noon, and at bedtime work best). While you’re looking at the number you’ve written on your card, visualize yourself in your perfect size, shape, clothes you like, and the activity you would most like to enjoy as the New You!
At first this might not be easy to do, however, your visuals will become clearer and more detailed each time you practice. Just Do It!
  • Eliminate Guilt! If you’ve ever tried to lose weight you have most likely failed. Poor will power, a bad diet, working hours that only allow for eating fast food, or any of a million reasons could explain the failure. Nothing is accomplished by feeling guilty or mentally beating yourself up. Let it go. Be kind to yourself and start over. You’ll feel better and your next attempt will improve. Commit to giving up on guilt, not yourself.
  • Unless your doctor has directed you to do so, stop weighing yourself every day or every week. Step on the scales when you start your weight loss program, write down your weight and put the scales into the closet. Don’t pull them out again for at least 30 days.
  • Drink 3 to 4 glasses of water every day and load up on vegetable snacks.
  • Have fun and enjoy yourself to the Max! Life is too long to mope around worrying and fretting about how it could have been. Enjoy yourself to the fullest exactly as you are right now. Being OK with yourself now, at this moment in time, is a very important idea for you to understand. Work on it daily.

The credit available to you is a percentage of your deposit. This usually ranges from 50 to 100 percent. If you pay off your balance consistently, over time your line of credit will increase. A secured credit card usually includes an annual fee and high interest rate.

    First Premier and Orchard

    Understanding Pet Health Insurance

Insurance as we all know is a type of ” risk management” mainly done to evade any sort of risks of prospective monetary loss. However, there are different types of insurance related to matters other than financial-for example different pet insurances to care of your pets. Among these, pet care insurance or pet health care insurance, is the most common type

Here, some amount is paid to the person, whose pet falls ill or suffers any accident. The pet insurance policy that is paid, is usually limited by the sum that will be paid by three ways-either by putting a check on the total amount to be paid in a year or by putting a check on for each illness or accidents or even putting check on for every claim along with restricting the period of the claim. The pet owner generally has to pay some amount for any claim called premium.

Mostly, these types of insurances are available for cats and dogs only. Sometimes special insurances are also offered for horses. These policies are almost available in all (developed) countries. But the rules and other details regarding the policies differ.

After making a good study on different companies who are engaged in this business it has been found that till now ‘ the king of the jungle’ is VPI pet insurance, which covers almost over 6400 illness, accidents or injury cases. They also cover for vaccines, though generally insurances are not paid for veterinary cares.

Pet insurance has now become the fastest growing form of insurance in the market as it helps us to get the best care for our pet and also helps us to get ready, beforehand for any sort unanticipated emergencies. It also helps us to cope with the rising veterinary costs.

Boys will be boys. Even men remain boys at heart. All they live for is sports, hanging out with their buddies and their career. But the time will come when they will finally find a reason to turn away from their toys, decline invitations to hang out at times and work harder than ever. Life now does not revolve around work and play anymore. And that reason for their sudden change of heart would be a woman, but not just any woman. She would be a woman so precious that marriage would be as precious to him as the woman is.

    Wedding Preparations and Grooms

In the wedding planning process, usually the groom is the less involved party of the two. In the American culture, the groom does not even have the responsibility to monetarily provide for the needs of the wedding. This is due to the fact that, once he and his bride are husband and wife, the wife shall never need to provide for herself or for her husband since he shall be the one who will be taking care of her for the rest of their married life. Of course, wedding planning is not the bride’s work only. For some couples, the groom actually is just as involved as his bride, and it is the duty of the groom to appoint his best man and his groomsmen. It is also his responsibility to be ready and available to his bride who may need his help and support along the wedding preparation.

    Wedding Days and Grooms

The groom is usually waiting by the altar together with the entourage while the bride walks down the aisle last. The groom will then meet the bride and her parents either by the altar or walk towards them. Then the father of the bride will give the hand of her daughter’s to the groom. This signifies that the father is giving away his daughter to the man she loves. He then accepts his bride from his parents-in-law. Although many say that the wedding day is about the bride, that is not so. Wearing only the finest suit, be it black or white, all eyes are on him as well. At the end of the ceremony, he will be the one accepting the congratulations of their guests while his wife will be accepting their best wishes.

Afterwards, it is off to the wedding reception. Besides sharing a sumptuous meal and a perfect occasion, the groom together with the bride accepts gifts of speeches and toasts from their guests. This is also the perfect time to thank them for sharing with them the celebration of their union. Of course, similar to the throwing of the bridal bouquet, the groom has a big part in the activities as well by throwing to their single male guests the garter his wife wore on her thigh. The lucky man who catches it is said to be the next one who will walk down the aisle next.

And the groom, who may seem to hold his composure so well throughout the whole wedding process, just may be the happiest man alive.

    Preventing Directory Browsing

Take a run out to your site and enter yoursite.com/images/ - just the name of your images folder, nothing else afterwards except for the trailing /.

If you see a “forbidden” or 403 error message, that’s normal, but if you see a list of files, it means that your server is configured to allow for directory browsing. You’ll notice that any folder that doesn’t have a default document in place will also behave in the same way.

It’s easy to fix; here’s two methods:

    1) Find out what the default document name is on your server - most likely it’s index.htm or default.htm (or .html). Open up your html editor or even notepad and just save the file as the default document name. Don’t add any text to the file, just leave it blank; then upload it to any folder that you’re able to browse the directory of. This can be a little time consuming if you have many folders.

    2) If your site is hosted on an Apache server, you can add *one* of the following lines to the .htaccess file in the root directory of your site:

    IndexIgnore */*

    or this option:

    Options -Indexes

Be careful not to alter any other contents that might be in your .htaccess file

The first option will bring up a directory listing with nothing in it, the second will return a “forbidden” 403 error

If you don’t have a .htaccess file, you can create one in notepad - just be sure to save it as .htaccess (note the “.” preceding the file name). If you’re not sure if your server supports .htacess, check with your web host.

    What’s a .htaccess file?

For sites hosted on Apache servers, the .htaccess file contains instructions for handling requests; including security, redirection issues, page rewriting and how to handle certain errors.

Why would you want to prevent directory browsing?

We all tend to leave files lying around in folders which may not be linked to or publicly displayed on our sites - items might be half finished pages, zip files not for general distribution etc. By preventing directory browsing, it lessens the chances of Joe Public stumbling on and viewing or downloading a file you don’t particularly want them to see.

These days, accessorizing is everything. Experts nowadays say that there is no such thing as a simple outfit as long as you know how to mix it up with the proper amount and combination of accessories. Even trends and styles in accessorizing from past generations have been reinvented and set as the trend today once again. But are you aware that not only humans are struggling to keep abreast of the trends of modern times? Pet dogs are now given the special attention, more special that one could ever imagine. Baths, grooming salons and pet foods are no longer the only basics and luxuries a pet dog could possibly experience and have nowadays. From simple tags similar in appearance to the belts we use to intricately-designed and jewelry-embellished tags, identifying your pet dogs is now easier and more enjoyable.

    Dog Tag Jewelry and Styles

Similar to the vast choices of jewelries available to both men and women, varieties and innovations in dog tags are slowly increasing in number as well. Dog tag jewelries may be costly, but more and more pet dog owners seem to get hooked on the latest trends in the world of pet care. Dog tag jewelries could be as simple as pearl necklaces to styles as extravagant as those embedded with precious stones and other high-valued metals like silver.

Customization is also available to all pet dog owners. With customization, owners are free to choose and create the dog tag jewelry of their dreams that best suits and complement their cherished pets. Owners could opt to having charm bracelet design-inspired styles or simple stylish sterling silver necklaces.

It gets more interesting. Designs, styles and materials could be used interchangeably in accordance with the owners’ desires. Dog tag jewelries could also bring out both personalities of the owner and the pet dog wearing them. The owner’s own style and design could be easily incorporated in these dog tags. Flags, logos, symbols, letters, and personal memorabilia are common in dog tag designs. Furthermore, dog tag jewelries could really make a statement with trappings such as gold, silver, Swarovsky crystals, diamonds, rhinestones, and gemstones. It gets even more personal and remarkable in each dog tag with designs that make use of birthstones.

    Benefits of Dog Tag Jewelries

For obvious reasons, dog tag jewelry especially those made with precious metals and stones add a nice touch to any dog tag. Dogs are special, and they also deserve only the best.

Like any ordinary dog tag, this also contains the name and address of the owner of the dog and the dog’s name. In case the dog gets lost, it is easier for the finder to contact the owner.

Dog tag jewelries also contain vaccination information the dog has had. It should also include the date of its last vaccination and must also include information like allergic reactions a dog has had to a particular medication. With this, it is easier for the veterinarian to treat the dog.

The Benefits Of Discounted Dental Plans

There are numerous benefits of discounted dental plans. Some of them are listed below:

Dental Treatment at Less Cost. A penny saved is a penny earned. The best reason to join a discounted dental plan is to save money. The mechanism of a discount dental plan is very simple. The dentists in an area ( the area may be limited to a city or a county or may spread across the country) join together to form a club. If an individual wishes to join this club, he/she will have to pay a certain amount of money periodically, usually monthly or annually. In return the individual gets dental treatment from the discounted dental club at a reduced price. Discounted dental plans work good for the individual because procedures like root canal, extractions, braces, plaque removal, even routine dental checkups are getting costlier by the day. When an individual joins a discounted dental plan, he can expect a savings anywhere from between 20% to 50% on dental treatment. The individual has to pay a small monthly premium, which can be as low as 7 dollars a month for a full coverage dental plan. It also works well for the dentists as their patient base and number of patients’ increases.

Better Oral Health. Dental diseases are the most common diseases in the world. It has been observed that people who join discounted dental plans tend to have a better oral health than people who have not joined. This is because as such the member of such plan is paying monthly so he/she tends to approach a dentist more regularly. Regular visits save money as they get dental care in case of a problem at an earlier stage instead of undergoing dental care at a later stage.

Less Paper Work. As discounted dental plans have no claiming etc, the amount of paper work is very less compared to a dental insurance plan.

No Preconditions. Usually there are no precondition exclusions and medical, dental checkups to join a discounted dental plan.

No Approval. The activation of your discounted dental plan is within 48 hours and you don’t have to wait for an approval etc.
