A wedding is never complete without a wedding cake. This is one of the highlights of a wedding reception. The bigger it is, the grander the wedding reception seems. But have you ever wondered where the tradition of wedding cakes came from?

Wedding Cakes in the Olden Times

Wedding cakes are said to have come from the great Roman Empire. Before cakes and icings were invented, wedding cakes were usually loaves of barley bread made especially for that occasion. The groom will eat a piece of the loaf and break the remaining loaf over the head of his bride. This signifies the groom’s breaking of the virginal condition of the bride and his subsequent power and control over her.

Medieval England’s version of a wedding cake is little sweet buns stacked high in front of the couple. The newlywed would then kiss over this huge pile. If done successfully, then it is said that the couple will have many children to come.

Wedding Cakes and Guests

The bride’s pie was very popular during the 17th century. This is usually made up of sweet breads, mutton pie or mince pie that is to be shared by the guests. What makes this interesting is the glass ring that is hidden inside the pie. The lady who finds it is said to be the next one to marry.

The bride will pass a piece of cake through her wedding ring and distribute it among their guests. It was said that whoever sleeps with this piece of wedding cake under their pillow will see their future partners in their dreams.

White as the Color of Most Wedding Cakes

White has become a special color of wedding cakes for very obvious reasons as white signifies purity. But for practical reasons, most wedding cakes during the Victorian period were white not because it signifies purity but because ingredients for a colored icing were difficult to obtain. As refined sugar is its main ingredient, the whiter the wedding cake is, the more prosperous the family seems.

Modern Wedding Cakes

The cutting of the wedding cake is a tradition that we have witnessed a dozen times. The bride is the one who cuts the cake aided by the groom. Then they would feed each other a piece of cake from that first slice of the wedding cake. This symbolizes their commitment to one another and the promise that they would provide for each other. It is also said that the bigger the piece of cake fed to each other, the larger number of children that they will have in the future.

White is still the favorite color of the couple for their wedding cake, but other colors have been used as well to match the wedding gown or the motif of the wedding. Although single-layer wedding cakes are still popular, it is quickly being replaced by multi-tiered wedding cakes of two or even three layers. More detailed and elaborate designs are also seen in wedding cakes, adding elegance and unique personal touch to the wedding.

And you thought that wedding speeches are the ones that only counts when it comes to introducing the couple or wishing them well, wedding toasts are of importance, too, in wedding celebrations. Others think that wedding toasts and speeches are the same, they are not.

Difference of Wedding Toasts and Speeches

A wedding toast is a short statement given by a guest that is full of well wishes for the newlyweds. It is given in honor of the bride and groom. The other guests then have to drink to show their support for the said statement. But unlike speeches, wedding toasts are unexpected. Anyone who volunteers on his own or have been volunteered by others can give a wedding toast.

A speech, on the other hand, is much longer, and there is no need of drinking to show their support.

A Wedding Guest’s Nightmare

Imagine eagerly clapping your hands right after the last person finished his speech, and as he sat down, the host conducting the program suddenly invites you to give a wedding toast for the newlyweds. You stared surprised at the host then shifted your sight to the newlyweds who are excited than ever to hear you and watch you do a wedding toast. An unwanted situation, right? Not only are you totally unprepared and have no idea what to say, but everybody is staring at you!

Preparing for the Wedding Toast

So as not to get caught unprepared in an embarrassing situation like that, be prepared. There is nothing wrong with making a little effort and not coming to a wedding empty handed. If you prepare now, you definitely would not regret it later.

Preparing for any surprising event such as an unexpected wedding toast invitation is easy. The information you need is all around you. You have the couple as subjects and from there you can make your wedding toast. Wishing them well will definitely come naturally because you do wish them lots of happiness and wealth. Just say what is in your heart, and you are good to go.

Still no idea what to say? Before you attend a wedding, it is best that you read up on making wedding toasts. There are books and wedding magazines with tips and ideas on what to say and how to deliver it.

But the largest source of all, of course, would be the internet. You can always log on to a search engine and look up wedding toasts ideas. There are millions and millions of choices and sources to help and guide you.

Movies can also be helpful. There are memorable wedding toasts in movies. If your memory is good, you can make use of this.

But the most important thing to remember in making wedding toasts is that it should be about wishing the newlyweds well. You can also share with them your favorite love quote, and if you know theirs, you can share it to the guests. Just remember though, wedding toasts should be from the heart and should show your love and support for the newlyweds.

The preschool environment is designed to educate young children prior to the age of five - when most children begin kindergarten. Preschool is an optional learning experience; some preschool programs are offered through the public school district, but in most cases preschool is offered privately - either in a non-denominational setting or through a religious institution. Because preschool meets the needs of young children, preschool learning differs quite a bit from the learning environment offered at the time of elementary school.

Research has shown that children of this age are especially conducive to learning; their brains are like sponges picking up concepts through the use of all of their senses. Such is the reason that preschool learning concepts are taught through play-based programs. It has been shown that preschool aged children learn best through play, absorbing fundamental lessons without being aware of anything but having fun.

Curriculum designed for preschool learning often incorporates core concepts into fun, tactile games; ball play promotes hand-eye coordination, physical games sharpen gross motor skills, card games practice memory retention, writing games hone fine motor skills, and books and storytelling further a love for reading and language. And all the while, children are also learning fundamental social lessons such as working together, respecting each other, and taking turns.

The modern preschool environment will also incorporate the use of computer games into the curriculum. Preschool learning of today can take place through the use of computer software that engages children through the use of color, sound, and interactive play.

Creative preschool teachers are crucial to successful preschool learning. It takes an inspired, resourceful individual to effectively deliver educational lessons in a way that interests and motivates small children. Holding the attention of students so small can sometimes be the most difficult accomplishment.

Most importantly, the goal of preschool learning is to foster a lifelong love of learning; children should leave the preschool experience with a feeling of accomplishment allowing them to move forward in their education with comfort and confidence.

The Character Of Fireplace Mantels

A fireplace can be the centerpiece of a room, breathing personality and life into an otherwise ordinary room. It draws families together for warmth, conversation, and entertainment. But fireplace mantels - more than the fireplace itself - reflect the home owner’s unique personality and create a focal point for an entire room.

The style and material of fireplace mantels - as well as the way in which they are decorated - tell a story about the homeowner and their very specific tastes. But more than anything, a mantel should be integrated into the overall design and theme of the home.

For instance, if you have an older home with a traditional fireplace, then a mantel made from natural wood or stone would be best suited to complement the fireplace. For a more contemporary home, a sleeker wood or laminate may best offset the beauty of the fireplace and make the type of statement befitting of your home.

Most fireplace mantels are built alongside the fireplace when a new home is built. When a homeowner purchases a home and wishes to change the mantel, there are a number of ways in which to go about it.

Some mantels can be purchased as a single unit through home improvement or fireplace stores. But to really reflect the personality of the homeowner and create a unique and interesting design deserving of being the focal point of a room, it should be built to custom specifications.

There are a variety of companies that specialize in building fireplace mantels by hand to the customer’s exact specifications and material. Such companies will often come directly to your home to take measurements and establish the overall design of the room so as to best create something that works within the space.

For those companies who operate online, you need only supply them with proper measurements and a decorative guideline. Often, they will even have a gallery of styles from which you can choose so as to best meet your needs.

However, for those ambitious do-it-yourselfers who wish to design and build their own mantels it is possible to create a beautiful and unique piece with which to complement the fireplace and the room as a whole.

With proper measurements in hand, visit a local home improvement store where you can find a variety of materials with which to create a beautiful mantel. Be creative in your design; you can include a number of beautiful embellishments to infuse your own style into the piece.

Of course, in addition to the design and hanging of fireplace mantels comes the decorating of them. Choose wisely what you plan to display on your mantel as it will further reflect your style and personality.

A fireplace can act as a grand centerpiece in our homes - drawing family and visitors alike - as a source of heat and as a focal point of beauty. Fireplace mantels do much to illuminate that beauty even further by framing the fire and complementing a room.

The human body is the tool through which somebody experiences life and his surroundings as well as interacts and communicates with others. To some people, however, the body is another piece of canvas through which they could express themselves, their beliefs and their traditions.

Drawing a Picture, Telling a Message

Just as paintings hanging on walls make a room more beautiful, body art can enhance a person’s good physical attributes. Some ladies have a sunflower tattooed on their backs so that they can wear backless dresses that will reveal their flawless skin adorned by the tattooed flower. In this sense, body art is worn the way diamond necklaces are - it is meant to adorn and enhance the wearer’s beauty. However, there are other much more complex reasons for the proliferation and practice of body art. These reasons can be cultural, political, or spiritual.

Body art is extremely common in jails. Tattooing and branding are some of the most common rites of passage for inmates who wish to be part of certain groups. Body art can also be used to declare personal beliefs and political stand. In this case, body art can be compared to graffiti on the wall; it declares what the person wearing the art believes. People in ethnic groups also used tattooing extensively as a form of ornamentation. In some cases, tattoos were used to mark how many people a warrior has killed in battle.

Body Art Types

Widely known types of body art are body painting, tattoos, shaping, scarification, branding and body piercing. Body painting is usually done by painting on the body, usually covering the whole body completely with water-soluble makeup or paints. Body painting is very similar to painting on canvas, however, it can be more difficult to accomplish as the body has contours that makes painting pictures and scenes on the body more complicated.

Tattoos, probably known by all, are permanent decorations on the body applied through the use of an electrically ran needle. Body tattoos usually cover a relatively small portion of the body. Favorite places for body tattoos are the chest, the upper arms, and the back of the shoulders. Body tattoos are relatively permanent, too, as the picture or the letters are etched onto the skin.

Body piercing is accomplished through the use of materials such as beads and precious stones and metals. Ear piercing is probably the most practiced by women and some men for accessorizing. Today, piercing is performed on almost all parts of the body such as the nose, the lips, the tongue, the eyebrows, the bellybutton, the nipples, and others. Shaping, on the other hand, is done to permanently shape the body according to a person’s preference. Methods of this type of body art are foot binding - common among Chinese women.

Scarifications are more unconventional methods of body art. There are religious groups that deliberately scar their body (usually with pointed objects like knives) using a prescribed pattern. Somewhat similar to scarification, branding is another type of body art that involves a whole lot of pain. This was originally done to farm animals (cows and horses) and originally used for identification purposes. This is accomplished through placing an extremely hot piece of metal with a certain design on the body until it burns the skin and leaves a mark that may last forever.

Whatever form of body art is practiced, it is certain to elicit varying reactions. Body art can be beautiful, captivating, or disturbing depending on the beholder’s point of view and set of values.

Real Estate Rebates - Good News - Kentucky Changes Its Laws

In an effort to keep the home buying public up to date about receiving an un-advertised home buyer rebate the next time they buy, I have discovered that Kentucky now allows buyer rebates and incentives by agents under the following terms of Kentucky Real Estate Law:

Kentucky Real Estate Professional and the Law

NOTICE: On July 15, 2005, the Kentucky Real Estate Commission and the United States Department of Justice filed an Amended Final Judgment in federal district court. On July 13, 2005, the Commission filed emergency regulations. Because of this Amended Final Judgment and these emergency regulations, Kentucky real estate licensees may now offer any inducement or rebate, so long as it is disclosed in writing to the client or customer. Therefore, any portion of this book that references the inducement and rebate prohibitions found in the old versions of KRS 324.160(4)(m), 201 KAR 11:011, Section 1(5) and/or 201 KAR 11.121, Section 1(2) is now obsolete. Please refer to the Commission’s website at www.krec.ky.gov for additional information on the Judgement and the new laws allowing inducements and rebates by Kentucky licensees. Please refer to the box at the top of this Legal Information Section for additional information on the Judgment and the new laws allowing inducements and rebates by Kentucky licensees.

Previously, I had mentioned in other articles that the states of AK, ID, IA, KS, KY, LA, MS, NJ, OK, OR, TN and WV had restrictive laws regarding incentives and rebates. As I further research these state laws, I have found things changing as the DOJ (Department of Justice) investigates and sues these states for their restrictive behavior regarding this subject.

Tom Jacobson is a licensed agent in Washington State and has paid buyer rebates up to $11,000.
He offers a FREE 10 - day email course to further educate those potential buyers interested in getting an unadvertised rebate. http://www.easyresponders.com/subscribe.aspx?u=671/666

Think Of It As Part Of The Act Of Killing

“Think of it as part of the act of killing”.

Many people head their articles or book chapters with a quote; this lends gravitas, authority and authenticity to what follows. On the whole I like a good quote, although seeing the same quotes and anecdotes repeatedly, (Edison and his light bulbs, Colonel Sanders and his chickens) starts to grate after a while.

With that in mind, here is a quote that changed my life, from “The Book of Five Rings” by Miyamoto Musashi (translated by Thomas Cleary). Have a read and I’ll explain why.

“FIVE KINDS OF GUARD” “The five kinds of guard are the upper position, middle position, lower position, right-hand guard, and left-hand guard. Although the guard may be divided into five kinds, all of them are for the purpose of killing people. There are no other kinds of guard besides these five.

Whatever guard you adopt, do not think of it as being on guard; think of it as part of the act of killing”.

I found The Book of Five Rings for the handsome sum of fifty pence in Oxfam. At the time I was operations manager for a media firm. I headed 12 managers and 160 staff across three day and night shifts in a business that ran 24/7 and only closed on Christmas Day. Getting everyone moving in the same direction was often a challenge, as we were a feisty bunch, with sizable egos. There were many heated conversations and passionate arguments. I have to admit that sometimes, I would come out of a meeting and feel as though I had taken a right good kicking.

When we are under attack, people will look for our soft and vulnerable points; they aim at our emotions and our pride. This can knock us off balance and cause us to feel hurt and angry. If our pride is hurt, we may counter attack irrationally and ineffectively and this will make us look even weaker.

Rather than have a weak counter attack it is better to guard and admit that you may not have all the answers, need more time, even acknowledge mistakes, or oversights and apologise. Do not show anger but strive for inward calm, put your ego on hold and demonstrate unwavering equanimity.

Have patience, have perspective, and have perseverance. Not all conflicts are won in a few easy moves. Do not think of it as being on guard; think of it as part of the act of killing. You will persevere. You will win.

The greatest battles are those we fight inside of ourselves, often we need to be on guard. In this case, do not think of it as being on guard; think of it as part of the act of living.

The first step is to become your own best friend and cheerleader.

Begin by acknowledging your talents and abilities. Write a list. Include the ‘little things’, they count! Everybody is good at something. Think of the things that come easily to you. Take time to do this exercise, it will encourage you to recognize what you’re good at.

Spend time thinking about all the things you do well and the things that have gone well for you. Look for things that make you feel good about yourself.

Collect

  • photos of past achievements
  • note exams that you’ve passed
  • things that you’ve written
  • thank you cards
  • memories of compliments you’ve received and positive things that have been said to you …

Create a scrapbook or journal and add to it as you progress. Concentrating on things that you’ve achieved will give you confidence to start moving out of your comfort zone.

To build self confidence you need to do things that will help you to gain confidence.

Decide to stop under estimating yourself and stop comparing yourself to other people. Stop demanding that everything be perfect, things seldom are, yet they are often ‘good enough’.

Remember, everyone makes mistakes - let yourself off the hook. Don’t dwell on past mistakes. Learn from them and move on. Concentrate on the positive things that you’ve done and let your successes be your inspiration.

Focus on what you’re capable of rather than what you can’t do. Give yourself credit for your efforts even when things don’t turn out as expected. Learn from your mistakes - ask yourself what you could do differently next time.

Monitor your self talk. That’s the inner voice that says, ‘I can’t do this’, ‘I made a mess of that again’ …

It’s time to shut you inner critic up. Remember, you’re going to be your own best friend, Friends encourage one another and build one another up. So, the next time your negative critic starts to tell you that you’re no good at something, silence it.

Replace the negatives with positives. Tell yourself, “I can do this, I just need a bit of help.” “I did much better this time, I’m getting there.”

Make a decision to only allow your inner voice to offer constructive, encouraging comments.

Observe your self talk for a week. This is the first step in turning your self talk into an ally. Listen to what you’re telling yourself.

  • What kind of things have you been saying to yourself?
  • Are they helpful?
  • Would you speak that way to a friend or a young child?

If not, work on changing what you say to yourself. Replace the negative comments with something positive and encouraging.

You develop self-confidence by thinking well of yourself and feeling good about yourself, not by beating yourself up.

Try giving yourself gentle advice and encouragement. For example, when you’ve made a mess of something, tell yourself, “I could have handled that better but it’s time to move on, learn from my mistake and think about how I can do it better next time.

Remember to record your achievements in your scrapbook or journal. When you need a boost, look at them and remind yourself of your successes. In time, you’ll have more faith in your abilities and more confidence to try new things.

“Don’t let life discourage you; everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was.” Richard L Evans

“Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.” Norman Vincent Peale

“The way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear.” William Jennings Bryan

Landscaping your home is no small task, but that is not to say that it can’t be fun and rewarding as well. Assuming you have done your homework, created a landscape plan, a sound budget, and an affordable shopping list, it is time for your last step before you get down to the fun work; it is time to get your landscape supplies.

You always need the right tool for the job, and that statement holds especially true when applied to landscaping work. But before you run out and purchase a tool for every conceivable landscaping application, take the time to study your landscape plan to make sure you only purchase items that you will really need. Further, if you utilized landscaping software to help you create your landscape design you may have a shopping list function that is part of the software package. If so then creating your list of landscape supplies could be as simple as clicking a printer icon!

Different designs require different landscape supplies, but there are a few items that you are almost certain to need. Landscape fabric is a breathable layer of sheeting that acts as a base for areas where you are not trying to grow plants, grass or flowers, such as mulch or stone covered areas. The landscape fabric acts as a barrier that allows water to drain through it, but also prevents weeds and other undesired plants from growing.

The tools of the landscaping trade can be as varied as the projects themselves, but no list of landscape supplies would be complete without a few of the most basic staple items. Shovels, pruners, hoes, rakes, wheelbarrows, and trowels are must have items for any landscape project.

Additional supplies that you will likely need are things like grass seed, fertilizer, sprinklers, mulch, stones, plants, flowers, and shrubs. Add to that your basic lawn care items, such as a lawnmower, weed trimmer, and edger, and you have the basic landscape supplies you need to tackle most basic projects and maintain your work after it is completed.

Ultimately, the list of landscape supplies that you will need will be defined by the project you are undertaking and the land on which you have to work. A rolling property with natural tiers can make your job quite a bit easier, and your list of landscape supplies is sure to reflect that. However, a flat property with little in the way of defining characteristics will require much more work and materials to bring it to life. Naturally, if your landscape design includes things like lighting, water features, and pathways, the size of your landscape supply list can jump exponentially.

When it comes time to purchase your landscape supplies there are several options you may wish to entertain. The obvious choice is to shop one of the large home improvement stores that dot the current retail landscape. Not only do these big box stores have a wide selection and competitive prices, they also have helpful staff members who can answer your questions and get you off on the right foot.

Another option is to buy your supplies directly from a company that specializes in landscape supplies. Mulch, plants, stones, and pavers are just a few of the items that specialty dealers can provide, and they can often deliver those items to your doorstep at a competitive price as well. Lastly, your local landscape contractors may have excess supplies from their professional jobs, and they may be willing to part with those items at a deep discount. But no matter which direction you turn, remember that the best way to save money is to buy only what you need, so let your landscape plan dictate your list of landscape supplies; and then get to work and have fun!

The best man is usually one of the groom’s closest friends or relatives, as the maid of honor is usually the bride’s most special girlfriend or sibling. However, why exactly do grooms have a best man?

The Best Man in History

Before, the grooms did not court and woo their ladies into the altar. It was usual for a groom to kidnap a fair lady to become his bride. On his search for a bride, a groom usually took with him a trusted friend or soldier.

The best man was the groom’s lookout and spy. He was also tasked to help the groom succeed by driving away the bride’s relatives. After all, the groom was kidnapping his bride, usually from other tribes or clans. The bride’s relatives wouldn’t have given her up very easily and there’s bound to be trouble. Thus, the groom took with him somebody - his best man - who could fight with him, protect him, and help him accomplish his mission.

It’s hard to imagine today’s best man wielding a sword and wearing armor to protect the groom from harm, but that was just what the best man of times past did. That was the best man’s first and foremost role, then.

The Savvy Best Man

The best man of today has exchanged his sword for a champagne glass and his armor for a tuxedo. You’ll see the savvy best man in weddings everywhere giving out a gay and usually embarrassing (for the groom, anyway) speech. Indeed, the best man’s role in modern times is drastically different from his traditional role. However, one thing remains the same - the best man is still important in a wedding’s success or lack thereof.

The best man is still the groom’s best man, the groom’s trusted right hand. From day one until the end of the wedding ceremonies and post wedding ceremonies, the best man is the groom’s one-man support system and his trusted adviser.

The best man is in charge of making preparations for the bachelor’s party that every groom (as well as his set of rowdy friends) expects to get before he ties the knot. The best man will have to think of the theme, the venue, the entertainment, the food, and the attendees of the bachelor party.

On the wedding day itself, the best man is tasked with the job of making sure that the groom will arrive on time for his wedding. He will arrange for the groom’s transportation, even acting as the groom’s personal chauffeur if necessary. The best man is also “Keeper of the Ring.” This means exactly what you think it means and this is not in any way related to Frodo in the Lord of the Rings. During the ceremonies, he’ll be passing the bride’s ring to the groom.

During the wedding reception, the best man will have to give a toast to the bride and the groom. After the wedding, if no other arrangements were made, the best man will drive the newlyweds to the airport or wherever they wish to be dropped off. He can also be the one tasked with the return of rentals as well as the safekeeping of belated wedding gifts.

The best man is important in weddings for he has various responsibilities that can make a great difference in how a wedding turns out. More than his ‘assistive’ roles, however, the best man’s most important role of all is bearing witness to his best friend’s or close relative’s marriage.
