What We Learned from Spring Training

Spring training is a strange phenomenon - it never seems to end. Baseball is the ultimate endurance test - a month of games to get prepared for six months of games to decide which teams get to play another month worth of games. Because of that, the ultimate baseball handicapping survival tip is to relax and not overvalue anything. Baseball reality as you know it is going to completely reinvent itself over the course of the season. That being said, it only makes sense that we pay some attention to what is going on in Florida and Arizona to see what impact it may have on the season. Here are eight things we have learned so far that could be useful once the season gets under way:

1) The Nationals are really, really bad. It’s possible, in fact, that they will be historically bad. All that you need to know about the team is that John Patterson is their No. 1 starter. Who’s John Patterson? That’s exactly the problem. You would have to be a long-time scout to know a lot about the pitching staff, or the bench players for that matter. There is no bench depth, and the starters don’t need to worry about polishing up their induction speeches for Cooperstown. If you find yourself in a betting slump at some point this year, chances are pretty good you can break it by betting against the Nats.

2) Justin Verlander may be hitting a sophomore slump. Verlander was absolutely brilliant last year, but whatever magic he captured has escaped so far this spring. He’s made five spring appearances, and he has an ugly ERA of 8.31. The scariest part is that he doesn’t know what is wrong. If the problem was obvious then he’d fix it and everything would be okay again. He doesn’t know, he seems to be frustrated and maybe panicking a bit, and that’s not good news for Detroit.

3) Wood and Prior are hopeless causes. I watched a Cubs spring training game in Phoenix a couple of weeks ago. Mark Prior started. He was terrible. Kerry Wood came in for an inning of relief and he was brilliant. Since then, though, Wood has regressed and Prior hasn’t improved. Thanks to injuries and mental issues, neither pitcher is poised to be a factor for the Cubs at the start of the season. It’s comforting, I guess, that some things never seem to change.

4) It’s all Dice-K, all the time. Never has a pitcher come into his first season more hyped than Boston’s Daisuke Matsuzaka. If you’re not sick of hearing about him already, you will be soon. It’s hard to know how he will adapt to American baseball, but one thing you can be certain of is that public bettors will overvalue him in his first few starts. His spring appearances haven’t given us much of a clue about what the future has in store - he was brilliant in his last start against Pittsburgh, but less than stellar in the start before that against the Dodgers.

5) Something’s brewing in Texas. It’s been a while since Rangers’ fans have had anything to get excited about. It’s not like they should be planning a victory parade, but things are going well so far for Texas. The pitching is going well, Eric Gagne is healthy and throwing in games and the bats are working. Spring training records mean virtually nothing, but the Rangers have the best record in Arizona. If nothing else, a team with Kenny Lofton and Sammy Sosa on the roster will be interesting to watch.

6) Clemens is coming back. Roger hasn’t made an announcement yet, and he likely won’t for weeks or months, but you can pretty much rest assured that he’s coming back. He’s been spending more time at Astros’ training camp than he did when he was playing for them. He’s been throwing batting practice and helping his son as much as he can. He’s been giving interviews and making comments, and his representatives have been more vocal than usual. In other words, the Yankees, Red Sox or Astros are going to get a mid-season pitching boost.

7) Chipper Jones is sore again. Jones missed 27 games last season during two trips to the DL with the same injury, a strained left oblique. Though he’s 35 and increasingly fragile, Jones is still a crucial part of whatever success the Braves will have this year. It has to cause concern, then, that he has missed four games with a muscle problem on his right side. Though this injury by itself likely won’t amount to much, it could be a precursor to a real problem if he can’t stay healthy.

8) Yankees pitching still tenuous. The biggest question the evil empire faced last year was their lack of dominant starting pitching. That hasn’t changed substantially in the offseason. One change is that Carl Pavano, an all-star head case, will be back and ready to contribute after missing last year. The biggest difference is that Andy Pettitte has been brought back to anchor the staff, and the team needs him to be at his best. It has to scare George Steinbrenner to death, then, that Pettitte is struggling with back spasms and is going to miss at least one start.

Buying Pre-Foreclosure Homes Can Be Your Very Lucrative Real Estate Investing Niche

Buying real estate at a discount to the fair market value is one of the important ingredients to making the most money in today’s housing market. One of the best investing niches to buy at a discount is buying a pre-foreclosure home.

Why is buying a pre foreclosure such a good deal?

First of all, pre-foreclosure is the period of time between when the lender files a foreclosure lawsuit or notice of default against the property owner and the date the property is sold at a public auction or trustee’s sale.

During this period of time the home owner still controls his property. He can bring his mortgage current and stop the foreclosure process or he can sell the property to save his credit profile from having a foreclosure notice attached to it. He can pay off the loan he can no longer afford to make payments on and perhaps have some equity left over in the property to put some cash in his pocket.

The pre-foreclosure period is the first and best stage in the foreclosure process to buy a property at a discount because you, the investor, can do three important tasks to maximize your profits:

  • You can evaluate the profitability of buying the pre-foreclosure.
  • You can inspect the property to determine what repairs need to be made and discount your offer price accordingly.
  • You can negotiate the price and terms with the home owner directly and perhaps get a discount as much as 50% off the current market value.
  • This is ideal compared to the following stages in the foreclosure process, namely, the public auction and post-foreclosure stage.

The public auction stage can carry more risk to the investor as well as disappointment. There is more competition at the public auction and so the price may be bid up beyond your top bid price for the property. You also need to come with cash in hand in the form of cashier’s checks to buy the property. Then there is the disappointment of being told the sale has been cancelled. This is typically due to some legal maneuvering by the home owner such as filing for bankruptcy protection to stall the sale.

The last stage of post-foreclosure occurs when there are no successful bids at the auction. The lender takes the property back and it becomes what is commonly known as “real estate owned” or an REO. At this point many lenders will list the property with a local real estate broker at fair market value depending on the condition of the property. The lender may even choose to rehab the property to obtain a higher sales price. The likely type of buyer at this point is someone wanting a personal residence or an investor that will buy and hold.

What skills do you need to buy a pre-foreclosure property for the most profit?

With so much opportunity in pre-foreclosures you should be highly motivated to learn all you can about the skills needed to be successful in this real estate investing niche. There are a number of skills you need to develop to be successful.

One very important skill or method you must develop is the ability to locate the pre-foreclosure listings before the rest of the eager investor competition does.

Now you can find these properties for free if you go down to the county courthouse yourself and research the public records. This is time-consuming, however, and the information you’ll gather is very basic. Highly successful investors use other methods and strategies they have developed to locate distressed home owners and pre-foreclosure lists. These include:

    Foreclosure Subscription Services:

Foreclosure subscription services provide pre-foreclosure property listings. However, not all listing services are the same. There can be a vast range in two critical areas:

[1] How fast they notify you of new listings. The best services should have listing information to you in a matter of days, not weeks.
[2] How comprehensive the information is that they gather. You need more than an address, the loan the default has been recorded on and basic property information, to make informed investment decisions. The best services will also provide you with such information as any other loans against the property and local comparable sales.

Strategies of getting the distressed home owner to call YOU for help and ready to make a deal

There are successful methods of contacting the home owner of a pre-foreclosure that involve mailing them or calling them or leaving something on their doorstep. You need to develop the skill to write and deliver a message to the home owner that will get their attention and get them to call you instead of a competing investor.

Better yet, if you can get a home owner to call you before the notice of default is even filed, you’ll be way ahead of the pack of competing investors. This is really a very special skill that the most successful investors have developed.

This is just one of the skills you need to develop. Others include property evaluation skills such as crunching the numbers to calculate potential profits and knowing how to inspect the property to determine the condition and what repairs need to be made and how much they will cost. You need good communication skills when talking to the home owner to build trust and make a connection so you can negotiate successfully with them. You also need skills in drafting the purchase contract with the proper clauses to protect your interest to avoid getting stuck with a property that turns out not to be a good deal upon further investigation.

How to learn the skills to be a successful investor

If you haven’t developed these skills and don’t know where to start, I recommend you find a real estate investor mentor. Find someone in your local area who is already successful in pre-foreclosure investing and ask if they will coach you. They will need an incentive, of course. Maybe they need someone to do some grunt work because of time constraints. Then be their grunt and keep your eyes and ears open at all times and be a sponge. In time you will develop the skills and strategies needed to be highly successful in the lucrative niche of buying pre-foreclosure homes.

What to do if you don’t have a local real estate mentor to help you

If you don’t have a local real estate mentor, the next best thing is working with a “virtual” mentor. Many of the best and most successful investors in pre-foreclosures have written step-by-step guides to help someone just getting started or someone who wants to improve their skills to make even more money. So find yourself a mentor, either in your area or a “virtual” mentor and start learning how to make money in pre-foreclosure homes.

    TH-42PX70 Review – Panasonic Viera 42″ 1080p Plasma TV

Having dominated the plasma technology market over the past few years, it’s no wonder that every new generation of Panasonic plasma TVs are greeted with much anticipation. The latest one is no different: having been unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2007 in Las Vegas at the beginning of the year, roll-out of the 10th generation plasma began in Europe (soon to be followed suit in the US) in March 2007. I encounter the Panasonic TH-42PX70 quite often in my profession, and so will give a brief rundown of its capabilities.

Panasonic plasmas have an excellent reputation for unrivaled black level and shadow detail, and I’m happy to report that the TH-42PX70 is up there with the best in this department. Batman Begins and Unforgiven - both suitably dark films - would have absolutely murdered any lesser competitors, but on the Panasonic TH-42PX70 I could still see fine shadow detail that could have so easily been engulfed by nothingness.

Furthermore, there’s not very much you need to do to get the picture looking right: if all TVs were produced in this manner, ISF calibrators will soon be out of job. To attain the 6500 Kelvin (daytime) color temperature in which films are shot and broadcast, simply go into your user menu, select the “Cinema” mode (assuming you haven’t done so when you first set up your TH-42PX70) and then the “Warm” color temperature. By doing this you make sure that you’re watching the film as per the director’s vision.

Traditionally image retention are a big problem with plasmas; not so with TH-42PX70. I had detected a slight hint of retention after putting on static images (from my computer) for 10 minutes, but within 1 minutes of resuming moving images the retention washed away. I really think that as long as you take the proper precautions, image retention on plasmas is a thing of the past.

Nevertheless, the TH-42PX70 has its own set of weaknesses. For starters, it still suffers from problems of false contouring where there should be fine gradation. Part of this is source-based as the problem largely went away when watching high-definition, but if you’re sensitive to this kind of thing it may annoy you.

The previous generation of Panasonic plasmas was haunted with what is known as “purple snake” or “purple ants”, where purple bands or pixels with appear around green areas with small change of gradient. In the TH-42PX70 I couldn’t really see it when sitting from 8 feet away, but if I move closer to the screen at say 3 feet I would notice it… IF I’m looking for it. Just something worth bearing in mind.

When reviewing plasmas, I cannot refrain from mentioning buzzing noise, which is typical trait of plasma TVs especially with high-contrast scenes. In fact, I could vividly remember a massive plasma TV shootout I attended where a pure white background was used to test how loud the plasmas buzzed. In TH-42PX70’s case, the buzz is more like a high-pitched whine, which didn’t particularly trouble me when the sound was on, but if you have ultra-sensitive ears, this is something to take into consideration.

To sum up my view as someone who sees and installs more than your fair share of flat panel television, the TH-42PX70 does most of the important things better than most TVs. Sure it’s has its flaws, but this is such a wonderful set-and-forget plasma TV that if I were shopping for a new plasma TV, I’d take this in a heartbeat.

Robert Keene installs home theater by day and indulges himself in high-definition films by night. For more info on Panasonic TH-42PX70 plasma TV, check out his website at http://www.th42px70.co.uk

Common Cat Mishaps and How to Deal With Them Without Going Crazy

Inevitably, in the life of every pet owner, there are unexpected behavioral problems here and there that need dealing with. It pays to be understanding and patient with your cat, as many times the issue is fully fixable and just a matter of understanding pet behavior. Here are some of the most common problems owners report having with their cats, and suggestions on how to handle them.

    Soiling outside the litter box.
This is something that many cats will do when the litter box is not kept clean. Like us, they want to relieve themselves in a clean environment. If you have a multiple cat household like I do, buy more than one litter box, use scoopable cat litter and strain it frequently to keep it clean as possible. I have one robotic cat box that automatically cleans a few minutes after one of the cats leaves it. It does a great job but it must be kept clean or it will malfunction. The bottom line is, keep the litter box clean.

Wherever the cat has soiled outside the box, make sure the area is cleaned thoroughly with appropriate cleaner. You can buy cat repellant sprays at the pet store, those work pretty well. If you don’t have any, spray the fully cleaned area with potent perfume, cats usually hate perfume and will avoid the area totally to avoid the smell.

    Throwing up on the carpet.
If you think your cat is sick, ask the doctor by phone if the symptoms are worth bringing in kitty for a checkup. Cats barf, it happens. They get hairballs from cleaning themselves, or they eat too fast and hurl it back up afterwards. If I see blood in the vomit, that is when I know to call the vet and bring kitty in, especially if he isn’t eating. Don’t delay if that happens. But for everyday barfing up hairballs or overeating, those I prevent as much as I can through their diet. I buy dry food that is for “Sensitive systems” or “Hairball management”. Ask a vet other tips on supplementing kitty’s nutrition so he won’t feel the need to hurl so much. Surely there are more ways to prevent this, but watching my cats’ diets has cut down on their needing to vomit, considerably.

You bring home a new cat, and the new cat doesn’t like it.
Cats are territorial, and it takes some adjustment for everyone when a new pet is added in. Cats naturally react with hissing, maybe growling and swatting one another when really mad. I introduced a new cat into my household a year ago and he instantly got along with one of my cats but hates the other one. But, they have learned to tolerate eachother, and I bet when I’m not looking they may actually be buddies deep down. How I acclimated them to eachother is, at first I used a cat pheramone spray called Feliway in the room, which is a natural calming medium for some cats. It calmed my more hyper cat down somewhat. Also, a spray bottle filled with water works great if they swat at or get nasty with eachother. One good squirt of water, and cats will scatter. Basically, you are re-training them to live with eachother. By rewarding good behavior and quickly, calmly responding to unwanted behavior, they learn to mellow out and co-exist. After 30 plus years of cat ownership, I know all cats can get along eventually. I grew up with cats and we always listened to hissing and mayhem when introducing new ones. If they get really nasty, put one in the bathroom, and let them sniff eachother under the door. Gradually put the two cats together more and more until they are more tolerant of one another. Even now in my household, there is a hiss here or there, or a swat, but nothing catastrophic. Make sure to pet both cats when you bring a new cat in, so the they both see that you “approve” of them. Be patient and don’t lose your temper, as anger will make everything worse, not better. Don’t stir fear into the picture, stay calm and let them go through their meowfest until they calm down. They will, trust me.

Kitty likes to sharpen his claws on your couch and other things he shouldn’t touch.
Buy a scratching post, and a cardboard cat scratcher (found in pet stores). Put dried catnip on the scratching post to attract the kitty and he’ll be climbing all over it in no time. The cardboard cat scratcher comes already infused with catnip, and absolutely no cat will refuse that thing when they smell it. Put your fingers on the post as they are looking at it, and pretend to scratch. I know, it sounds dumb, but it works. Cats mimic their mothers when they show them to hunt, so they can mimic you, the human parent, as you “scratch” at the post. Praise them profusely when they do what you do and start to scratch. If you can afford it, get a kitty condo or cat tree. There are some great ones on online auctions, brand new. I bought a huge one for half of what it would cost at the pet store chains, online. It was easy to put together, and my cats live on it. If you get one, again, put catnip on it to show them how interesting it is. My cats live on theirs. It keeps them off the couch, and gives them something to watch birds from (I put mine next to a large window).

Your cat likes to jump up on tops of things he shouldn’t, such as shelves or the tv.
If the space is small, get a semi-tacky thick roll of painters’ tape (it’s sticky but not overly so) or double sided sticky tape. Put strips of it on top of the items you know he will jump on. When he jumps up on it, believe me, he will not want to do it again. My one cat loved jumping on top of my stereo speakers, but when I did this, he stopped doing it forever after one encounter with the tape. The idea is to make the environment unpleasant to the kitty, and that should do the trick quickly. For larger spaces like a chair seat, buy a Purr Pad at the pet store, which gives a mild shock when kitty jumps on the area. It comes in different sizes and doesn’t hurt the kitty, just shows him that the place he jumped on isn’t for him. Or, tape some balloons on the surface of a place the kitty wants to frequent. One claw touching those balloons and he won’t be wanting to go there again.

These are some tips my family and I have used for years to train our cats. Some cats are more mischevious than others, but that is part of their charm. Cats are a joy to watch, just watch a kitten play, it is fun to see such unbridled energy and excitement. Just show them what behaviors you expect of them, since they won’t know until you guide their way. Do it with love, and patience. And they will reward you with unconditional love for life.

Sites Where I Can Learn Japanese

There are plenty of sites on the net for learning Japanese. It’s usually best to look for something that has sound or video to get your pronunciation right. If it’s just text I can pretty much guarantee you that no-one will understand you!

It’s also worthwhile checking which sites are written by Japanese speakers so you don’t end up learning some of the wrong stuff that’s out there.

Having said that, there are some brilliant sites to learn Japanese, here are a few of my favourites.

    Japanese Pod 101

This came out after I’d learnt Japanese, but I tried the version for learning Chinese last year and it is really good. It’s a podcast programme for your ipod and although it’s a little work to get through it is very entertaining.

    George & Keiko Show

A great site using videos and a sort of chat show format. It’s a paid site but is very lively and teachers lots of real expressions that we use in Japan all the time. Funky subtitles make a big difference.

    Popjisyo.com

I use this site everyday! It’s maybe for more advanced learners but it’s also useful for beginners. You simply go to popjisyo.com then type in a Japanese site you wish to read. It then takes you to that site, but when you move your mouse over the Japanese words it gives you reading of the kanji characters and a translation in English. Very useful.

Say it in Japanese (from web-japan.org)

This one is aimed at kids, but don’t let that put you off. It’s very easy to navigate and the Japanese is simple but useful. The sound loads up as external files, but the conversation pieces are a great starting point.

    Youtube

If you have the patience to sit through a few bad videos then Youtube does throw up some gems for learning Japanese. They’re usually quite short so are easy to get through and the audio with the visuals makes a big difference

    Games & Songs with GenkiJapan.net

This is my site where I put up all my Japanese learning ideas along with
a load of games and songs. I try to make it as fun as possible! Please
stop by and say “konnichi wa”.

The Rich Jerk - A Scam Or Anti-Marketing Guru? I Rather Find A Better Alternative

Kelly Felix, the author of the Rich Jerk Ebook, is a multi-millionaire marketer with a keen wit of how to attract attention to his products and websites. From the time he sold his website on Ebay for over $350,000 until his latest Rich Jerk craze, he has been marketing his other companies and sites. He tries to remain anonymous but it hasn’t really worked (I told you he is Kelly Felix). His big archrival is Holly Mann, who took on the Rich Jerk head to head and wrote a book that is infinitely better than the Rich jerk ebook.

The truth is that he is filthy rich. The bad news is that he didn’t really reveal the secrets to you in his ebook. I learned a lot more techniques, methods, and secrets in his coaching course (which cost over $2,500) than I did from his Ebook. As a matter of fact, the only new thing I learned in his Ebook was about the E-currency chapter. Otherwise all the other techniques in his Ebook are just repetitive information that’s found all over the internet. I consider Kelly Felix to be a marketing Guru, but not as such an honest seller. For $49 you buy his book, but then he recommends that you spend over $600 dollars on a bunch of programs in order to start making money.

Also, he provides really poor resources for Ebay sellers of wholesalers and dropshippers. I have found much better ones than the ones he lists in his book. His book is just filled with a bunch of affiliate links so that when the reader buys into the products he suggests, he just makes more an more money. He does not reveal any real secrets in making money online…all he does is just market with anti-marketing techniques. He will tell you thins like “If you don’t want to listen to me on this then just go ahead and fail with other programs and then come back to me.” That just gets the reader really agitated and confused, but at the end he wins the reader over and gets them to purchase the products he recommends..and he will get the commission on it. If there is one thing to learn from the Rich jerk, it is how to be sneaky and use BlackHat techniques of making money on the internet.

After taking the Rich Jerk’s course for six months I learned where and how to really advertise, how to really get onto the Search Engines quickly, how to really market effectively, and where to find amazing wholesale dropshippers for Ebay. I now make over $15,000 in sales on Ebay every month and around $5,000 in affiliate programs. You will not be able to accomplish this with the Rich Jerk’s Ebook. I was able to do it with his coaching sessions and with a book that is much greater than his…a book written by Holly Mann.

Holly Mann outwardly attacks the Rich Jerk and puts him into shame. Her techniques and advice are much easier to follow, she has an excellent forum, and she helps you. Oh yeah, her book is a fraction of the cost for the Rich Jerk’s book. You won’t even need the Rich Jerk coaching program once you have her book.

She calls her site Honest Riches. I believe she did a better job than Kelly Felix in explaining how to practically implement the Rich Jerk’s ideas. Also, at her price of only $14.95 it is a much better deal than the Rich Jerk’s Ebook. To see her book you can go from here www.ThankYouRichJerk.Wordpress.com.

What Your Finish Position Can Reveal About Your Swing Flaws (Part II)

In Part I we talked about three of the most common finishes in golf the high finish, the low finish, and the lunge finish. Here, we examine three more common finishes with the goal of finding and fixing your hidden flaws.

Last week I said that you don’t need golf lessons to tell you there are only two times when your swing is static at the start and the finish. How you finish tells you a lot about the quality of your swing. The key is tracing your movements to find out why you finished the way you did. Hopefully, the exercise will serve as a golf instruction session that will have you not only hitting better shots but also chopping that golf handicap down to size.

This week we look at the Gap Finish, the Spin Finish, and the Reverse-C Finish. None are pretty because the golfer is usually out of balance at the end. That should tell you right off that there’s something wrong with the swing. If you’re not finishing in balance, as I’ve mentioned in my golf tips, chances are good you have a hidden flaw or flaws that’s throwing your swing off.

    The Gap Finish
The Gap Finish is a really awkward looking. It’s characterized by a noticeable space between the knees, when they should be touching at the finish. The gapped knees are a symptom of the real problem gapped knees at address. Players who finish with their knees apart usually start with a wide stance, perhaps, too wide. Opening your stance provides a solid foundation for a powerful swing, but if your stance is too wide, your risk limiting your swing and power.

The cure: close up your stance. Adopt one that features your feet placed just outside your shoulders. You’ll still have a stable foundation for your swing. If you’ve been playing with too wide a stance, you’ve probably also lost the ability to turn correctly as well, so you’ll need to re-learn that as well. Practice hitting balls with your right arm (right-handers) only. This drill helps you learn to get your right side through the swing. Your new stance will help the process along.

    The Flop Finish
The Flop Finish usually results in pulls, pull hooks, and pull slices. What’s flopping is your right foot (right-handers). Floppers usually use too much right side through impact, unlike Gappers who uses too little. A dominant right side leads to cut-across swings and roundhouse-type motions, creating the scenario for a pulled shot. Remember, it’s not the flopped foot that’s the real problem, but too much use of your right side.

To correct this hidden flaw, work on your shoulder movement, which should be down and under through impact. Address a ball, and then turn your back foot outward. Hit balls from this stance. Flaring the back foot prevents your right side from rotating too early. It also forces you to move your right shoulder under and through. Practice this at the range. Try to remember the way the right side feels when you hit with a flared right foot. Take that feeling to the course with you.

    Reverse-C Finish
We’ve talked about this finish in my golf tips before. The Reverse-C Finish was once considered the finish of all finishes. But it has been relegated to a poor finish with a hidden flaw. You can tell this finish because the player has a severely arched back when he’s finished. The arch back indicates upper-body hang-back and lower-body slide. Neither is good in itself. Together, they’re deadly.

A lateral slide toward the target and too fast through impact causes this finish. The body hangs back due to an inability to keep up with the legs. And though the legs are sliding forward, your weight remains on the rear foot, causing a too handsy swing. To correct this leg-driven flaw, you need to get more hip rotation in your swing. If this is your problem, try some practice swings lifting your front foot off the ground during your back-swing and then placing it back down during your downswing.

Whether it’s the Reverse-C Finish, the Gap finish, or any of the other finishes we discussed, the way you finish indicates how your swing went. If you’re ending your swing with one of the finishes we described, figure out what category you fit into, and you’ll be able to detect your hidden swing flaws. Then it’s just a matter of correcting them to see that golf handicap drop.

    Serving Wine? Temperature Does Matter

If wine is not served at the right temperature it could severely hinder the taste and experience of the drink. When wine however is served at the right temperature the wine gains a balance and a taste that is unmatched. Perfect is the way that wine should be and most often times our wine is not perfect. In fact to often its far from it and many people really never know the difference.

Red wine are best served just slightly below room temperature or around 67-68 degrees. When red wine is served too warm it develops a strong alcohol taste and the real taste of the wine has all but vanquished. White wine are served best just slightly below 50 degrees Fahrenheit and when cooled properly it has a fresh clean fruit flavor that seems to be full of life. If white wine is chilled incorrectly it will taste weak and lifeless and as though the flavor has faded and dulled.

The easiest and fastest way to serve wine at the right temperature isn’t putting it in the freezer for 10 minutes as some would have you believe. Please do not kill your wine by freezing it unless you really want to see all the flavor wave on its way out the door. What you should do is fill an ice bucket equal parts full of water and ice. Then simply submerge the bottle of wine into the bucket just to the base of the neck. If you do not have an ice bucket I really suggest getting one they are very inexpensive and well worth it. If you are having dinner with guests this weekend and don’t have one then just grab a large bowl and use the steps above to chill the wine to the right temperature. White wines need to be chilled in the ice bucket between 20-25 minutes and should be served immediately after opening. Red wine should be chilled for about 15-16 minutes and they to should be served immediately upon opening.

Another easy and helpful way to chill wine to the right temperature is to have a wine cellar. You can get a wine cellar for a few hundred dollars that can hold about 24 bottle of wine or spend a lot more and get one that can hold an entire collection. This option is not for everyone but something to consider. On a wine cellar you set the temperature of the wine to the exact temperature you wish to store it at and when you are ready to drink simply uncork, decant and enjoy.

A very important tool to have especially when you are entertaining guests is a long probe wine thermometer. When you un-cork the bottle of wine you can insert the thermometer to see how close to being ready to serve it is. Once its ready you can either serve the wine in a decanter or pour for your guests. Once you have plenty of practice you will no longer need a thermometer as you’ll be able to tell when your wine is cool enough by the feel of the bottle. I like to compare this to learning how to grill a steak. When you grill a steak for the first time its never right and the way you want it. After you’ve grilled steak for a few years you’ll be able to serve it to that perfect shade of pink you like time after time. Cooling wine is the same way(minus the fire and charcoal) tools will help but eventually you won’t need them anymore and will serve the perfect bottle of wine every time.
