The 188 stage Hero’s Journey (Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188+ stage template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.

[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].

THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY

THE 188 STAGE HERO’S JOURNEY:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Gives you a tangible process for building and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharses, of which there are usually four).

d) Tells you what to write. For example, at a certain stage of the story, the focus should be on the Call to Adventure and the micro elements within.

*****Comedic Break****

Comedic rest breaks are not uncommon here [around the the time of the Persuading of Allies to Seize the Sword]. In Dances with Wolves (1990), John feels harmony and dances around a fire, pretending to be an Indian. In The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Han feels terrible.

*****Physical Marker*****

The Physical Separation is marked by a Physical Marker. In Romancing the Stone (1984), Jack and Joan have to cross the rope bridge across the gorge. In Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), both have to jump into the river down below to escape their pursuers. In The Godfather (1972), Michael ’s killing of McCluskey is all over the news.

Resisting the Physical Separation. The decision to Transform is often not taken lightly. There is resistance to crossing the Physical Marker. In Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), both have to jump into the river down below to escape their pursuers (Sundance: “I can’t swim.” Butch: “Why you crazy, the fall will probably kill you.”)

Preparing to Physically Separate. In Dances with Wolves (1990), John is tired of waiting to engage with the Indians. He decides to introduce himself.

Chewing gum can be a real pain when it gets stuck to clothing, furniture or carpets my tips below will help you get rid of this common pest.

When gum gets stuck to clothing the following method can be applied. Firstly, scrape off as much as you can, the less there is the faster you can remove it.

The reason why gum is so hared to remove is because at room temperature it becomes gooey which makes it a lot more awkward and stubborn. To counter act this state you need to place the garment into a plastic bag and then into your freeze, leaving it to cool for 30 minutes.

When you have done this remove the said item from the freezer and the bag and scrape it off, this should me most if not all of the gum. If any remains then use methylated spirit to get rid of it.

Obviously, when chewing gum gets into your carpets or furnishings you can’t put them into the freezer. Instead you need to improvise. Place ice cubes onto the affected area, in order to harden the gum and then just peel it off. As above, if any remains then use methylated spirit to get rid of it. This method has been personally tried and tested by me therefore you have my assurance that it does work

There you have it, you now know how the get rid of nasty chewing gum. No more unsightly marks caused by chewing gum, what a relief.

*****New World of Trials and Transformations*****

Just like any New DOmain (most often described as a New World), the World of the Trials and Transformations has never been experienced before. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Bonnie, Clyde, Buck and Blanche all go into the house.

*****Shape Shifter and Antagonist relationship******

Post the Crossing of the Return Threshold and before the Master of Two Worlds and Selves, a hell of a lot happens that is rarely given mention. The Final Conflict (a metaphor for this stage) follows a distinct process. The Shape Shifter, who has often been close to the antagonist, may be saddened by his (or her) death. In Straw Dogs (1971), Amy is saddened at Charlie’s death.

*****Inner Cave*****

The Inner Cave, whichever it is (First Threshold, Road of Trials or beyond) is where the Hero confronts Inner Challenges. In Straw Dogs (1971), Janice watches David and Amy in the bedroom.

*****Crossing the Return Threshold*****

It is at this stage that the Shape Shifter is quite often revealed. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Pop doesn’t like that Moss took up with Bonnie and Clyde and Frank wants to talk to Blanche. This is also a moment of the Red Herring. The Shape Shifter has most definitely the chance to change his mind again.

When preparing the family budget this is a very important consideration to take into account.

Once all your non-controllable costs have been calculated and subsequently subtracted from the household income, by non controllable costs I mean the mortgage, credit card bills, loan repayments etc i.e. these set amounts have to be paid or you’ll run into arrears, thus you have little or no control over them.

So once these have be paid a spending limit should be set out for controllable costs i.e. the costs you do have control over, such as food, clothing, saving accounts etc. These set amounts should be realistic and should not be set too high or too low.

An excellent system here is to award each controllable cost a weighting, say, food can have weighting of 30 %, clothing 10 %, treats 10 %, savings account 10 % and so on. This system should be based on importance, with the most important cost being allocated the highest weighting and the least important the lowest.

When the set of weightings have been allocated you’ll multiply the percentage figure for each by the money left over (after each non-controllable cost has been catered for).

For example, if the money left over after non-controllable costs have been settled is £1,000, with the following hypothetical weightings being applied.

Food weighting 40%

Savings weighting 20%

Clothing weighting 15%

Going out 15%

Pet food 5%

Other 5%

Then the cash awarded to each cost can be calculated as follows.

Food –= 40% x £1000 = £400

Savings - = 20% x £1000 = £200

Clothing- = 15% x £1000 = £150

Going out - = 15% x £1000 = £150

Pet food - = 5% x £1000 = £50

Other– = 5% x £1000 = £50

Total 100% £1000

Doing these calculations well help ensure that you don’t unnecessarily overspend on your budget, keeping you away from the evil clutches of the debt collectors.

The Iron Arbor

Are you into the idea of drawing the interests of your visitors toward the outside area of your home? Do you like your home to be a standout in your whole neighborhood? Now if your answers are all yes, then you may employ the use of an iron arbor decor. Iron arbors can give a distinct characteristic to your home.

The iron arbors do not go out of style easily so you can be guaranteed that your concerted effort in the installation of your decor will not be left futile at all. Ever since the 16th century, the iron arbor has been in demand because most of the aristocrats used these accents in their houses.

Up to now, its popularity has never died out. In the market, there are generally a lot of iron arbor items sold. Included in today’s popular choices are the intricate designs on fences, stair railings, gates, plant stands, garden accessories, and many others.

The use of wrought iron in gates, fences, and stair railings can exude a majestic appeal like your home is a castle in disguise. In your garden, the iron arbor can provide a place for you wherein tranquility can be derived from.

You can better spice up the environment within your iron arbor by planting scented and colorful flowers around its borders. Erecting a lavish-looking yet cheaply-priced iron arbor in your garden, den, or living room can ultimately produce the impression of elegance all around your home.

With the creation of an iron arbor in your garden, you may turn the place into the classic yet stylish Victorian-inspired garden. The iron arbor may be placed at the entrance of the garden to disguise the closest entry point from the house itself. It may also be placed on a certain area to signify a focal point where beautiful vine plants may be grown. Iron arbors placed in the middle of a garden can likewise be the perfect place for you and your visitors to sit in if you want a taste of the outside air.

The overall design of the iron arbor can be complex or very simple. What is important is that the style fits your taste, your budget, and it stirs the proper impression that you want to create to your neighborhood and friends. Iron arbors are typically used for the purpose of encouraging the growth of climbing plants or vines in a particular shaded place in the garden. Most American residents install iron arbors in closed vicinities where they can grow fragrant rose bushes. The traditional iron arbor is consists of only one of the sides which is left open. It is very much unlike the archway or the pergola.

You must have concluded that the iron arbors are heavily constructed. They are seldom repositioned in the area because they are basically made with concrete materials. It is impractical for you to set the iron arbor in the ground where soft grass grows since the heavy metal construction will sink into it and therefore destroy the soft grass.

So before you place the iron arbor into your garden, you must have already decided on its exact location. Overall, the price that you have to pay for iron arbors vary on the style and size that you prefer alongside with the accents that you would like to use with it.

Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Directed by

Zack Snyder

Cast

Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, Mekhi Phifer, Ty Burrell, Michael Kelly, Kevin Zegers, Michael Barry, Lindy Booth, Jayne Eastwood, Boyd Banks, Inna Korobkina, R.D. Reid, Kim Poirier, Matt Frewer

****/*****

I was - I think understandably - wary upon hearing that a remake was being attempted of Dawn of the Dead: zombie master George A. Romero’s greatest film. With the dearth of incredibly awful horror remakes of late, I’m sure no one could blame me. Thankfully my fears were largely unfounded, and, while it doesn’t measure of the original, Zach Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead is a surprising and slick re-imagining of the Romero Classic.

The film opens with Ana, a nurse, heading home after a long day of work, to some rapid fire foreshadowing. Once home she gets it on with her husband in the shower, missing an important news bulletin. The couple go to sleep, and are awaken by a tiny figure standing in the doorway to their bedroom.

The next 15 minutes or so are pure zombie movie bliss. From Ana’s escape amidst scenes of utter chaos in suburbia, to the fantastic opening credits sequence, which is intercut with news footage, all while “When the Man Comes Around” by the late, great, Johnny Cash plays in the background.

Ana inevitably teams with a battered crew of survivors, and, like the original film, they seek shelter in a sprawling shopping mall. It becomes clear at this point that the primary advantage that this film has over the original Dawn of the Dead is its cast. Sarah Polley is excellent, as is Ving Rhames as Kenneth, a hardened cop. I was disappointed by the omission of a incompetent “fly-boy” type character, as he as been re-imagined as a far more useful everyman, played very well by Jake Weber.

The film’s writing is not quite as strong as its cast, and the film contains some characterization problems. The cast is far too large to explore each character fully, so many come across as very annoying or undeveloped, as it is clear they exist simply to be zombie fodder. In addition, some characters, such as CJ the security guard, seem to change very suddenly, without appropriate motivation.

This film also lacks the subtext of the original. That is, unlike Romero’s film, which was a fairly clear commentary on consumerism, the remake does not have a clear message. Like its contemporary, the slightly superior 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead also peters out somewhat in the third act, as the survivors execute a desperate plan.

On the whole however, Dawn of the Dead is a lot of fun. The zombies are fast and brutal and the gore is impressive. The soundtrack is also uniformly great. There are also some fun homages to the original, such as the helicopter that appears briefly in the first 15 minutes, and a cameo from gore master Tom Savini. Try to find the others - there are many more.

Many businesses fail to realise the amount of time it takes to get a new employee fully trained. It can take anywhere between 1 and 6 months to train a new member of staff. It can also take the same amount of time to find out if they are suitable for the job in the first place!

Businesses also have a high turnover of staff due to not having proper policies in place to encourage the best staff to stay on in the business.

Some of the best ways to increase staff retention are also the simplest to implement. A great idea is to increase their holiday entitlements and other benefits over time served. Just a simple thing like giving an extra day off (to a maximum of 5) for each year in service can make a great difference. Giving employees greater flexibility and more control over the hour they choose to work, based on their length of service is also beneficial.

Making annual bonuses routine and incorporating them in the wage structure also helps to stop staff leaving half way through the year.

Training all your best staff so that they can take on more responsible work and improve their people management skills so that they understand how to treat and motivate the staff below them is essential.

Training is so imperative especially with technology changing at breakneck speeds. This is a win win situation. You end up getting more productivity and your employees feel appreciated.

Talking to your staff maybe quarterly (or every 6 months) and discussing their job will quickly identify what is troubling them. The biggest problem I had in my previous business was that staff did not get on with each other! By just moving them around either in a different office or changing their roll I was able to retain my most valuable members.

Any time you have to critisise the action of an employee, use the kiss, kick kiss formula. Start of by praising what you do like of them followed by the criticism (and how they could change for the better) and end with praise again.

Another common gripe in the work is being forced to work with outdated equipment, machinery and computers that keep breaking down or are far too slow. Your employee probably costs you a small fortune and yet some employers are not willing to spend a few hundred pounds in upgrading old technology that will actually help in achieving substantially more productivity.

What about their desks, chairs, filing cabinets, staplers and other small pieces of equipment that cost pennies to keep maintained and yet are routinely in poor working order. Routine maintenance of all the equipment is essential.

If your staffs do perform well in any task be sure to let them know. It amazes me how bosses will leap at the first chance to critisise but will not utilise the opportunity to praise. Praise them verbally and in writing, and remember to give out rewards now and again.

What do you do if 1 of your best member of staff leaves? There is a huge likelihood that they might not enjoy their new job. Make sure that they know that not only did you value them whilst they were working for you but also that the door is still open for them if they decide to come back and remember to keep in touch. Former employees, having found out that the grass is not greener on the other side are likely to be the most valuable members second time around and are much easier to integrate back in the workplace.
