Health Problems In Puppies

Because their immune systems are still being developed, newborn puppies are very susceptible to health problems. To prevent the possibility of infection or other health problems, puppies must be well cared for. Here, we will go over some of the puppy health problems that can occur.

Colostrum, the antibody rich first milk of the puppy’s mother, is vital to the puppy’s health, so getting the puppy to take as much as possible is important. Puppies usually nurse every two to three hours from birth for the first couple of weeks. The peak of colostrum absorption occurs after eight hours after birth, so this is something that is important to be mindful of.

There will be a low absorption rate in the puppies from twenty-four hours on after birth. Consult your vet early if you have any doubts concerning the absorption of colustum by the puppies. The vet will use a blood test to check the antibody absorption rate and, to protect against infection, will inject the puppies under the skin with serum from the mother.

Caring for an orphaned puppy

Another big puppy healthy problem a pet owner might face is taking care of an orphaned puppy. If the puppy’s mother dies or, for any number of reasons, does not have any milk, the difficult job of caring for and feeding the puppy falls on the owner.

Hypothermia, a major killer of newborn puppies, is of concern with an orphaned puppy because its thermoregulatory system may be too weak to regulate its body temperature adequately.

To prevent hypothermia, a puppy must be kept in an environment of 85 degrees Fahrenheit for the first two weeks. Warm water bottles and blankets can be used for this but, if not used with care, they can cause burns. The best option is heat lamps.

An orphaned puppy’s nutrition is another very important factor to deal with. Care must be taken in choosing a good milk replacement. Commercial milk and homemade milk are not considered as good replacements. Cow’s milk is low in protein but can be used while goat’s milk is best avoided.

Slow growth and developing cataracts are the usual result of using unsuitable milk replacements. You vet or pet supply stare should have a milk replacement made just for puppies.

Getting a puppy to take milk from a bottle can be a difficult problem to overcome. Your vet should be able to offer guidance that will make it easier.

Making sure that your puppy has all its vaccinations on schedule and following the tips in this article, you will be able to handle any puppy health problems with ease.

Try Wood Biscuits When Glue Isn’t Enough

Wood Biscuits are very important joinery tools in woodworking and provide that extra stability projects often need. It has been said that good woodworking projects use glue, while great projects use a little more. In many cases, wood biscuits are that little more. Wood biscuits are small, oval shaped discs which join two pieces of wood together and are inserted by a biscuit joiner. Wood biscuits have not always been part of woodworking, though. Small wooden pegs were used in the past, but today biscuits are used when something stronger than glue is required.

Projects requiring biscuits often involve wood panels of twelve inches or more to be joined without noticeable seams. Glue is an appropriate tool in woodworking but is often not sufficient for excellent projects. Wood biscuits are not difficult to use. A biscuit joiner cuts a hole in the oppose edges of the wood, after which you cover the biscuit in glue and insert it into the hole. You then simply clamp the two panels or boards together. Once the glue and the biscuit meet in the hole made by the biscuit joiner, the biscuit expands to further fill in the hole which tightens the joint to an even greater degree.

Though the thickness of biscuits vary by manufacturer, most are slightly less than one-fourteenth of an inch thick. The three common sizes, though. Size zero is five-eighths of an inch thick and one and three-quarter inches long. Size ten is three-quarters of an inch wide and two and one-eighths of an inch long, and size twenty is one inch wide and two and three-eighths inch long. If you are looking for a specific thickness, check with different companies who may manufacturer multiple sizes even though it is not one of the more common sizes.
When determining the best size, though, you should try to use the largest size possible for your project. This will increase the stability of the project and panels joined together.

Wood biscuits can be used on any joint project, but they can be very helpful in edge to edge joint projects such as a dining room tables, for instance. They are also useful in projects involving a miter joint, such as a picture frame. In projects with a T joint like a bookshelf, for example, biscuits can offer quite a bit of extra stability needed.

Once you are ready to use wood biscuits as a joinery tool rather than rely totally on glue, there are a few things you should remember. Always store wood biscuits properly in a dry, airtight container until you are ready to use them. Moister can cause them to swell which, obviously, makes it difficult to use them. Also, be sure to check how your joints fit before you start the project and begin joining them with the biscuits and glue. Dry fitting your components is a necessary step when wood biscuits are used as the joinery tool.

Heal Heart Disease With Vitamin B12

Taking vitamin B12 lowers homocysteine levels that could otherwise cause heart disease. To assist with preventing and curing heart disease and related issues, everyone should take a vitamin B12 supplement daily.

Dr Lee Goldman has written a book called ‘Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 Shows Potential as a Heart Disease Treatment”, and believes it can benefit all Americans to ensure they have adequate levels. Operations for heart disease are very costly, and Goldman’s theory is that vitamin B12 could save money as well as lives.

Vitamin B12 can decrease homocysteine levels which reduces heart disease risk considerably. The University of Maryland Medical Centre conducted studies of their own which showed high homocysteine can make you more open to strokes and heart attacks.

Stress has also been proven as a heavy contributor to health problems. B vitamins have been shown in many tests and trials to reduce stress through increasing serotonin in he brain and therefore elevating moods. A happier person is generally a healthier person with a better quality life and in turn a healthier heart. Those suffering with depression, often attribute to B deficiencies, don’t look after themselves well and end up in further ill health. People with depression smoke more, drink more, take more medications and are more likely to eat quick unhealthy food. In these cases, vitamin B deficiency can spiral into a viscous cycle that can only become worse.

If you want to find the right supplement to avoid a deficiency, make sure it has B6, folic acid and B12. You can also get B12 as a single injection or daily pills, and tablets should have between 25 and 50 mg’s of B12 and 0.8 folic acid.

You can’t just take the supplement for B12 and expect to never have heart problems. It is just as important to have a healthy diet, exercise and don’t become overweight. Obesity is also a massive cause of heart disease, and if your diet is high in folic acid rich foods it should be a healthy one anyway. The best option is a combination of green, leafy vegetables and a quality B supplement as discussed.

Pruning, Weeding and Caring For Your Garden

Keeping a healthy, clean garden takes time and effort. Pruning, weeding and pest control are three of the more fundamental tasks involved in cleaning your garden. Read on for a few tips to help you clean your garden.

There are two main reasons that pruning the roots of your trees and shrubs is important. The first reason is to prepare a tree or shrub for transplanting to a different location. For a smaller size plant, cut down straight all around the bush about sixteen to eighteen inches from the main stalk. You will want to cut down farther if it is a larger plant. You then leave the plant to grow new roots, but be sure to water the plant well for at least a month and fertilize as needed. You should prune the tree or shrub at least six weeks before moving it. A second reason pruning is important is to cure what is referred to as girdling. Girdling is when one of the larger underground roots, or sometimes a surface root, is turning onto the other roots and not spreading out or implanting itself into the soil as it should. Sometimes, you can actually see the root circling where it should not be but, other times, you can only see that the trunk goes straight down in certain sections rather than slanting in spots where there are roots. A straight trunk is a good sign that girdling is taking place. Be sure to remove all of the girdling roots to prevent these roots from strangling the tree and damaging its growth, eventually to the point of dieing.

Many gardeners prefer mulching over weeding, but there are times when weeding is necessary. When the plants are small, you need to pull out the weeds that could grow in and “choke” the flowers. Weeding is often an important step before you can even begin to mulch. Many weeds are, actually, beneficial either from their root exudates or sometimes for food. Deep-rooted weeds can bring good supplies of nitrogen up into the to the topsoil and the plants’ stems. During tilling, the weeds will supply the soil with healthy nutrients and such which will help young plants grow.

Pest control is no fun in gardening, but fortunately you do not have to do a lot of work aside from the normal garden practices which tend to keep pests to a minimum. You should give plants a lot of room and air, ensure that they are not too damp unless required by the plant type and also plant them in sun or in shade, depending on what their needs require. Also, be sure to select disease-resistant varieties of plants and their companion plants. It is important to create a harmonious environment of living creatures, for example, bees on flowers and birds which are known for consuming insects.

Niche Networking Wins Good Clients

Probably the greatest single lesson I have learned in some forty years in business is to focus my marketing efforts on good clients.

When I think about networking I focus on niche markets. For my Business Coaching business I focus on Blue Chip companies. The reasons for this are simple. They are good clients because: 1. They have a lot of people who will probably benefit from my coaching. 2. They are accustomed to paying the high level of fees that I charge. 3. Generally speaking they pay their accounts on time.

That said, they are, of course, a great deal more difficult to penetrate. I guess I was fortunate in having a good grounding in marketing before I came in to Business Coaching. This meant that I thought about the best ways of gaining entrees into big companies in a logical and creative way.

The fact that I now have an almost exclusively blue-chip client list is the reward for a lot of hard thinking before I started out. It is also the result of what I would describe as a lot of intelligent work once I got going.

One of the questions I asked myself at the outset was: “Do I want a large client list or a smaller list of good clients?”

The answer had to be A Smaller List of Good Clients. I planned to run a one-man-band business so the client list had to be kept to manageable proportions.

The policy of focussing on niches of blue chip clients has paid of handsomely. I actually spend very little time on networking. Perhaps only 20 minutes a week. One hour a week top whack. But it pays of handsomely the way I do it.

I have to say that I have only come across a very few people who network in the same way as I do and they all appear to be very successful. The reasons are simple. We all stand in the right traffic lanes. We all work smart rather than hard. We focus on building good, two-way communication, relationships with our clients. We offer good value to our clients. We charge high fees, which we can do because we offer good value.

Nowadays I am spending more and more of my time on making videos about how I have built my business so that other people can simply go to my web site and get good practical advice straight from the horse’s mouth.

Types of Wood Flooring and Finishes

Installing wood flooring not only increases the value of your home, but it also adds to the beauty and warmth of any home. Contrary to a slate or stone flooring, wood flooring creates a warm and inviting feeling to your home. There are a variety of choices available in hard woods and other types. The wood you choose should depend on your decor and personal preference. Wood flooring is appropriate for almost every room, excluding the kitchen and bathroom due to the moisture in these rooms. Learn how to install wood flooring from a professional if you prefer to install it yourself. It is important to install it correctly to ensure it is long lasting. Otherwise, it would be best to hire a professional skilled in flooring.

Hardwood is one of the most popular choices in wood flooring and there are several types of hardwoods from which to choose. Oak, cherry, hickory, maple and walnut are some of the more common hardwoods installed, and are all able to be stained to a variety of different shades and tones. However, some hardwoods such as walnut and cherry have such a beautiful, rich tone in their natural state that you might consider leaving them in their natural color rather than staining the wood.

Once you have chosen the type of wood to install, you must consider your finishing options. Pre-finished wood is already stained and protected with a clear coating and is a good option when time is limited. It is generally more expensive, but as mentioned, it can save a significant amount of time. Another option is to finish the wood after the floor is installed. You must sand, stain and urethane the floor and the floor must be sanded after each coat. The more coats of urethane applied, the better protected the surface will be. This finishing method takes several days to complete, as suspected since the floors must dry between coats. You can also choose a distressed or reclaimed flooring finish. The floors do not have a smooth texture, but they are beautiful and have a unique finish. A benefit is that this flooring will hide scratches much better than urethane floors.

Besides hardwood flooring, you can also choose laminate flooring which resemble hardwood but are less expensive. A good quality laminate often resembles hardwood so closely that it is difficult to tell that it is not real hardwood. Armstrong flooring, for example, make quality laminates.

Regardless of the type of wood flooring you install, the care is the same. Proper care will ensure your flooring lasts. Be sure to sweep or vacuum the floor regularly. Dirt will wear away the surface and leave scratches on the floor, which are easily noticeable on the urethane floors. It is a good idea to use mats at the door entrances. Also, use a dry mop when mopping is needed. Too much water can damage the floor, such as warping to the surface, molding or damage to the backing due to water trapped under the floor.

The author Eric Slarkowski is very excited about things related to floor installation. You can find his work on wood flooring at different sources for wood flooring tips.

Key Facts About Lasik - What Are Some Lasik Complications?

After over 15 years of successful procedures and continual development, Lasik eye surgery has blossomed into an extremely safe and predictable procedure. However like all forms of surgery, complications can arise. Complications can occur at the preoperative, intra-operative, and postoperative stages of the Lasik procedure.

A thorough medical examination before Lasik is recommended to unearth any preoperative complications. The physician can then determine early on whether Lasik is possible at all or if there are conraindications. Preoperative complications can result from such factors as dry eyes or eye infections.

To minimize the possibility of such occurrences, surgeons can make various recommend. They recommend patients stop using contact lenses a week before the surgery, for example. Other complications include keratoconus (a genetic condition that causes the cornea to become thinner after the surgery).

Intra-operative complications may result from the inexperience on the part of the surgeon or inadequate hygiene in the operating room. A slipped flap is one of the most common complications. It happens when a corneal flap detaches itself from the rest of the cornea. In this case, the surgeon would advise the patient to go home and sleep to give the flap a chance to heal.

After the operation, the patient may suffer from an eye infection, usually under the corneal flap. This might result from a lack of hygiene or the carelessness of the patient after surgery (he must not expose the eye to any dust or smoke, for example). Such infections are treatable with antibiotics.

Another postoperative complication is the possibility of developing persistent dry eye. Persistent dry eye is caused by a reduction in the number of corneal nerve fibers resulting from the Lasik procedure. Up to a half of the fibres can be lost and since they are responsible for the production of tears, dry eyes can result. Incidence of sub-conjunctival hemorrhage is another possible complication, too.

These complications are rare and most have remedies. Remember that thousands of people have undergone Lasik without any problems. Lasik is a very safe and problem-free surgical procedure.

What is Hoodia Gordonii?

Kingdom: Plantae Division: Magnoliophyta Class: Magnoliopsida Order: Gentianales Family: Apocynaceae Subfamily: Asclepiadoideae Tribe: Stapeliae Genus: Hoodia ……..

And now under Hoodia, there would be 13 different species, one of them actually being Hoodia Gordonii. I am quite certain, you will not be offended, if I do not mention the other twelve.

What you just read above, is the scientific description of Hoodia. If you are a botanist, congratulations, it actually means something to you. If you are anything like me, you actually wish, never to see or hear all of this again.

Ok, promise, we are done with Latin! If I would be asked what Hoodia is, I would tell you: It looks like a cactus - and because it grows in the desert, needs only little water and actually has stings - I would say it is a cactus!

But what do I know! Science tells us (me), Hoodia is only a “cactiform”, because it is so similar to a cactus, but it really is a stem succulent. Other specifics of the plant are: it can grow up to one meter and it has remarkably large flowers, some of them in flesh colour and with a very strong smell.

Because of the flowers, some of the species are actually used and grown as garden-plants. They look nice, are easy to handle and you can grow them almost everywhere, from sandy ground to rocky gardens and they use just very little of water.

In nature, you will find Hoodia mostly in deserts, especially in the Namib Desert, which ranges from Namibia to Angola, and in the Kalahari. Their preferred grounds are either plains or the rocky parts of the deserts. All thirteen species of Hoodia can be found in these areas and obviously they were there, long before the first scientist set foot into South Africa. Therefore we have other names for Hoodia, such as “Queen of the Namib” or “Bushman’s Hat”. And long before that, it was named by the bushmen “Xhoba” or “Ghaap”.

These bushmen were also the first, to actually use the Hoodia plants. They discovered that all Hoodia plants had some ingredients, which helped them to treat indigestion and small infections.

But then there was amongst the thirteen Hoodia species one, which not only helped with the treatment of small inconveniences. The Bushmen found out very quickly that Hoodia Gordonii was useful even beyond that.

As you can probably imagine, the biggest problem in the harsh life of the Bushmen, is food. This is not a big surprise when you look at the region they live in. The Namib Desert and the Kalahari are quite certain not the friendliest places on earth and the next McDonalds is, even nowadays, not just around the corner. In a hostile environment such as this, you taste everything, which is not clearly poisonous and Hoodia Gordonii was not.

So, they gave it a try and soon it was clear, Hoodia Gordonii is not really “Food” in the actual meaning of the word, but they discovered one astonishing fact: whenever they consumed Hoodia Gordonii, it took them considerably longer, until they became hungry again!

Now, in an environment, where you actually have to fight for each little piece of food, it comes quite handy when you find something that helps you, to survive longer on less food. Especially when you have to go on hunting trips, which might take some days and you either have to find your food on the way, or carry it with you. So with Hoodia Gordonii, it was possible for them to carry less with them and concentrate more on hunting. All this together made the hard life a little bit easier.

This was hundreds of years ago and nobody was even thinking about weight loss, appetite suppression or similar things. But without knowing, the Bushmen had discovered the ideal weight loss product. (How it works and what it actually does in your body, is not part of this story. Let’s just say that Hoodia contains a mixture of chemical ingredients, which help to digest the food slower.)

So, to cut a long story short and to answer the question “What is Hoodia Gordonii?”:

Hoodia Gordonii is a plant, which grows in the deserts of South Africa. It grows to about I meter of height and to reach this, it takes between three or four years. For a long time it was of no use to us, except as a garden flower, but it helped the San-People, the Bushmen, to survive in the harsh environment.

Today we grow Hoodia Gordonii in Farms, because what helped the Bushmen to survive on the hunting trips, is nowadays the easiest way to lose weight.

The author was born in Switzerland, but is now living in Spain, enjoying the lifestyle, Sun and Fun. Over the years, he became quite an expert on Diets and Weight Loss. Other areas of interest are politics, sports and environment.
