Are You On A Politically Correct Diet?

There are real diets and then there are politically correct diets. The difference between the two is how committed you are. I don’t know why this happens, but whenever you start to eat healthier, it feels like people are out to sabotage you.

I used to work in an office and I would bring a few pieces of fruit to eat every day. One of my pudgy co-workers pointed it out every day. Seriously. Every. Day. Being on a politically correct diet means you eat bad foods when under peer pressure or as a social courtesy. This article will look at 4 places where your real diet might turn into a politically correct diet.

Politically Correct Diet - Office

It always seems like you work next to THE junk food king or queen. They bring in a bag of Ruffles or Milky Way Mini-Bites and they’re always offering you some. Or there’s a woman in the office who’s a baking wiz; she brings in batches of cookies every week. She comes around to your desk, insisting that you try her latest recipe.

Politcally Correct Diet - Business lunches

Someone always orders an appetizer. Chicken wings, potato skins. It’s difficult to stick to your diet when eating lunch at restaurants 5 days a week. At my last job, most of the guys walked to this greasy diner every day for lunch. If I didn’t go, then I was stuck eating lunch at my desk and answering the phone.

Politically Correct Diet - Home

Whenever you visit home, your diet goes to crap. Happens to everyone. Mom cooks comfort food, none of which is on your diet plan. Man, I love that food. But after a week at home, I have to find new pants. Turning away food made by your mom sucks; you don’t want to hurt her feelings AND it’s usually one of your favorite foods.

Politcally Correct Diet - Bar

Ever since college you’ve been drinking on the weekend. But now you’re on a diet and you want to lose your gut. This is especially tough for men. Are you still one of the boys if you stop drinking? Is bar-hopping still fun if you’re drinking water? Every time you drink alcohol, your body stops burning fat until the alcohol is out of your system.

No one really cares about your diet. And no one is sabotaging you. It’s that your old way of living is in conflict with your new diet. You alone have to take responsibility for what you eat and drink. Are you going to be polite and have a slice of pizza or are you going to say NO?

Dry Itchy Skin - Get Immediate Relief Naturally

Natural treatments for dry skin are the best choice today rather than harsh chemical treatments. As we age, our skin produces less of the natural oil that helps it retain its moisture.

Our skin has many nerve endings that provide the sense of touch and heat. The epidermis contains no blood vessels, and cells in the deepest layers are nourished by diffusion from blood capillaries extending to the uppermost layers of the dermis. The blood vessels in the dermis provide nourishment and waste removal to its own cells as well as to the epidermis.

Skin gets exposed to the elements, especially in winter, causing it to become drier. Dry skin can also be a sign of an under active thyroid. When the skin loses moisture it may crack and peel, or become irritated and inflamed.

Certain drugs, including diuretics, antispasmodics, and antihistamines, can contribute to dry skin conditions; check with your pharmacist or doctor and read the drug insert - you can get one from your pharmacist. Dry skin happens more often in the winter when the cold air outside and heated air inside cause the humidity to be low. Forced-air furnaces may make skin even drier than it already is too.

Good nutrition from living foods - foods that are alive - will help your skin from the inside out. Eating fruits that are red or orange in color will help improve your skin health and help to prevent acne. Get 20-30 minutes of sunshine daily on your arms and/or legs; sunshine triggers the body’s production of Vitamin D3, which is essential to having healthy skin.

Take fewer baths or showers; they’ll dry out your skin even more. Cosmetics should be used carefully because they may dry out the skin or cause allergic reactions like contact dermatitis; read the labels. Apply moisturizers just after a bath or shower, when your skin is still damp.

Dry skin contributes to fine lines and wrinkles; coconut oil helps prevent the onset by keeping the skin soft and supple. Coconut oil is very inexpensive - a great, cheap home remedy for all skin conditions. Coconut oil is the best healing, soothing, and moisturizing treatment I’ve found for dry skin; in fact all types of skin conditions, skin eruptions, pimples, acne, milia, irritations, cuts, burns, fungus, etc.

Use coconut oil to remove your make-up at night, like I do; it leaves a fine layer of oil to nourish your skin all night long; but better yet, apply more coconut oil. Apply coconut oil daily to your skin to heal, moisturize and soothe it.

Skin that’s not clean favors the development of pathogenic organisms; the dead cells continually slough off of the epidermis and mix with the secretions of the sweat and sebaceous glands and the dust found on the skin, to form a layer on its surface. The skin supports its own ecosystem of microorganisms, including yeasts and bacteria, which cannot be removed by any amount of cleaning.

You should see the results with improved skin within a few days following these dry skin tips and suggestions. It’s time to call your doctor for an appointment when all your home remedies do not relieve your dryness and itching. Call your skin doctor if dryness and itching are preventing you from sleeping.

When All You Have Is A Hammer

As the saying goes, “When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail…”. This is never truer than when you decide to do a quick repair and decide you can make do without the proper tools on-hand. My advice for anybody who decides to try this is this: DON’T. Nothing makes a job more frustrating than trying to make a what should be a quick repair without the correct tool on hand.

For example: This past winter my battery died while I was at work. No snow on the ground and I am parked on a hill so I roll-start the car and drive to the nearest auto/hardware store. MISTAKE NUMBER 1: instead of buying a battery and taking it home to install (where the tools are), I figure I can borrow a screwdriver and wrench and do this in the parking lot to save a 20 minute trip back with the old battery. 4 different tool purchases and 45 minutes later, as it gets darker and colder, the old battery is no closer to being removed than it was when I pulled into the parking lot. Frustration being at an all time high, the new battery is used to jump start the car and I proceed home where in a well lit garage with the proper tools it takes all of 5 minutes to complete the job.

Need another example? Being a good son-in-law, I decide while visiting my wife’s family to replace their bathroom sink fixture. Again, my tools are 1 hour away so I figure I can make do with what tools are on hand. MISTAKE NUMBER 2: some jobs require the correct tool for the job - any substitute will only result in frustration, damaged work, or injury. After spending close to an hour attempting to remove the old fixture with channel locks, pliers, screwdrivers, and every other tool short of a sledge hammer I took made a 20 minute trip to the hardware store and purchased the correct tool, a basin wrench. Once this tool was used, the replacement proceeded quickly with no more cuts, scrapes, bruises, or cursing.

If you are the type of person who likes the occasional do-it-yourself project, then you probably have a decent set of tools already. The well stocked toolbox should have a variety of screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and other tools for any basic repair. If you have been doing this for more than a few years, you may also have acquired a number of specialty tools as well (i.e., snap ring pliers, locking pliers, torx drivers, basin wrench, spanners…). You may find (as I have) that you tend to collect a new tool or two every time you start a new project. Here are a couple of tips for managing your tool habit:

Buy quality tools - I have purchased my share of cheap tools and they typically end up broken, bent or otherwise useless. If you plan to use it more than once and it is not emergency, spend the invest a little extra and purchase a tool you will have for a while.

Don’t have the right tool for the job, borrow it! - What are friends and neighbors for? If you have a job that requires a special tool, and you doubt you will need it again in the next 10 years, ask your neighbors and/or friends if they have one you can borrow. You can save yourself a few dollars on a tool you might not use again and may also benefit from suggestions or advice from somebody who has had to use it before.

Can’t borrow it, rent it - you would be surprised at the tools you can rent reasonably. In some cases, you can even borrow the correct tool for the job for free if you are making a purchase from that store (I have taken advantage of this from auto part stores on a number of occasions).

Organize your tools - As you collect tools, you will notice that tools fall into certain categories. My basic toolbox has the everyday tools you would expect: screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, socket sets… For other tools, I store them by the type of job I use them for so I always know where to find them. Pipe wrenches, basin wrenches, spanners, solder, and other plumbing related tools/supplies are stored in a the plumbing crate. Painting supplies like rollers, brushes, and edger’s are stored in the painting crate. I also have a crate for electrical and hobby supplies. By keeping my tools organized, I keep my toolbox to a size I can manage (and carry) and always know where to look for the tool I need.

Don’t be afraid to have more than 1 - some tools are useful in many places and inexpensive enough that you might want to keep a few on hand. Screwdrivers, hammers, tape measures, and utility knifes are examples of a tools that can be found in a few different locations around my home. A small toolkit for the car is not a bad idea either (see example above on trying to change battery…). I try to keep at least a one of each type screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and a few other basic tools in the trunk just in case of emergency.

Keep some basic hardware on hand as well - Many people have all the tools they need, but sometimes cannot find a simple nail or screw to hang up a picture. It pays to keep some basic hardware “in stock” since you never know when you will need it. I have a simple organizer hanging on the wall of my garage with a small supply of the most common types and sizes of nails and screws I commonly use. These range from finishing nails to decking screws.

Tipping and Etiquette in the United States

Note: This information is not official. It is merely to serve as an example of what to expect when traveling in the United States.

Restaurants

Restaurants with table service: In the U.S., tips are expected in restaurants. As a general rule of thumb, people tip based on the quality of service. A 15% tip is standard. If you receive exceptional service, it is customary to tip between 15-20%. For large parties of 6 or more, it is common for the restaurant to automatically add 15-18% to the bill. If you’re with a large party, be sure to check your bill for “gratuity” to see if the tip was already included. If you received exceptional service, you can request to add more to the gratuity. And, of course, if you did not receive adequate service, you should inform the management before paying your bill and have the gratuity adjusted.

In most states, a meals tax is applied to the bill and is clearly indicated as such on the bill or check. In those states where the meals tax is 5% (Massachusetts as an example) or 6% it is simple to calculate the tip by rounding the tax up or down to the nearest dollar and then multiplying by three.

Buffet restaurants: At buffet restaurants with limited table service, a tip of 10-15% of the bill is still recommended because the servers typically work harder keeping the buffet line stocked and clean. As a rule of thumb, the minimum tip should be $1 per person. As always, if you feel you have not been well-served, adjust the gratuity down, or add to the gratuity for exceptional service.

Fast food or counter service: Restaurants often leave tip jars on the counters, but you are not required to tip. If the service is exemplary or unusual requests are made, then tips are expected.

Hotels

Housekeeping and maid service: For hotel housekeeping and maid service, it is customary to tip $2-3 per night. It is customary to tip up to $5 in high-end hotels, or f there are more than 3 people in a room or suite. Leave the tip on your pillow with a note that says “thank you” so housekeeping knows the money is intended for them. If you have additional items delivered to your room, such as extra pillows, hangers, luggage racks, tip the person who brings them $2 or $3.

Concierge: If you inquire with the concierge about directions or restaurant reservations, tipping is not expected. However, for any special individual or unusual service, a tip is appreciated.

In-suite dining waiter: Always read the bill, if there is a tip included, it will be on the bill breakdown. Inquire with the server if you’re not sure. It is no longer the norm for the hotel to add the gratuity to the bill. Any “service charge” or “convenience fee” goes to the hotel, not the server. If there is no gratuity added, tip the server 15-18%.

Bellman/porter: If the bellman or porter takes your luggage to your hotel room, it is customary to tip $1-2 per bag.

Taxi driver: It is customary to tip between 10-15% of the taxi fare, based on service.

Hotel limo driver: If your ride from the airport was “free,” it is customary to tip the limo driver between $10-20.

Drink server: While in a casino or bar, it is customary to tip the drink server $1-2 per drink. Some tip $5 for the first drink to make sure the waitress “remembers” them and returns often.

Valet Parkers: For valet parking, it is customary to tip $2-5 when they pick up your car.

Casinos

Casino dealers: While seated at a table game in a casino, it is customary to tip the dealer 5% of bet amount at end of session, or occasionally bet for dealer in amount of your normal wager (the dealer can show you where to place bet).

Slot machines host: If they make a hand payout (over $1,000), slot machine hosts are generally paid between $10-20.

Drink server: While in a casino or bar, it is customary to tip the drink server $1-2 per drink. Some tip $5 for the first drink to make sure the waitress “remembers” them and returns often.

Spas

Massage therapist: For a massage or other treatment, it is customary to tip between 10-20%. Some spas will include a gratuity on your final bill, so be sure to ask if a tip was included. Most spas will provide you with an envelope to leave at the reception desk for the person who gave you your treatment. Also, if you wish to leave a small gratuity of $2-5 for the spa attendant who showed you around the spa and got you situated, it is well appreciated.

Hairdresser or manicurist: For a hairdresser, manicurist, or like service, it is customary to tip between 10-20%.

Fitness In Golf Is The Secret To Your Success

You’ve got to have an understanding of the demands in golf to realize the importance of fitness in golf. It’s never too late to do it. Senior golfers can reap the biggest benefits

I have heard horror stories from golfers who have tried everything to play better golf. Lessons…books…videos…everything! Nothing worked for them.

Why? Limitations AND Compensations!

Their body can’t physical do what it needs to do to make even one good golf swing, let alone 18 holes of good swings.

The ONLY way to change this dreadful situation is through a golf specific fitness progam. Simple exercises and stretches is all you need! You don’t even need to sweat! Just do something daily! You don’t need a gym membership either. Do it right in your home with very little equipment.

No More Lessons

Here’s one reason why a golfer won’t improve once they take a golf lesson or even several lessons.

You normally take a lesson because you’ve got a ‘glitch’ in your swing. Might be a slice, maybe a hook, a top, or many other flawes.

The instructor tells you the potential causes of your swing fault, and an attempt at how to correct it.

You give it 110% and still can’t make it happen. Why? Your BODY can’t do it! No way…no how! Unless you implement simple exercises, stretches and fitness drills, you’ll be struggling in vain for a LONG time!

Don’t feel lost. You are a huge part of the golfing population who goes through this. But…it doesn’t have to be that way! Listen to what I”m saying…read this article again…and get to it!

The Answer Is Fitness Specific To Your Golf Swing

Turn this around! Go get a fitness test to assess your limitations, whether it be strength, flexibility or both. Now you have something to shoot for. Improving those limitations with fitness for golf.

Start your fitness for golf routine that specifically address your above weaknesses. Do it regularly every week no matter what. Now go take your golf lesson and see what happens. Your teaching pro won’t even know who you are!

There you have it! Fitness in golf is going to be your ’secret weapon’. One that will catapult you above all your golfing buddies and future club competitors.

Can One Be Arrested For Speeding? For Illegally Parking?

Greetings to all,

This question was asked of me the other day. Both are very good questions. The first, can a citizen be arrested for speeding? The answer is yes. If you’re speeding on a residential street with a posted speed of lets say, 40 mph, and you’re doing 70 mph, you can be arrested. If traveling down the interstate where the posted speed limit is 70 mph and you’re doing 100 mph, yes you can be arrested.

In both cases you can be issued a citation, but also arrested for negligent operation of a vehicle or a similar charge (depending on the state’s wording for this charge). The charge relates to the fact that your driving at this speed is endangering the public. You’re driving so fast that you are likely to lose control and kill a citizen.

I have personally as a former police officer arrested a driver for this violation.

The second question, can you be arrested for a parking violation? The answer is no. But I’ve seen a citizen arrested for some other charge that began from a parking violation. If an officer asked you to move an illegally park vehicle and you challenge his authority, he could arrest you for failure to comply or resisting arrest. Some people think that resisting arrest means you must have a physical struggle with the officer. Not so. The mere fact that you resisted verbally is sufficient for this charge. I personally never arrested a citizen for a parking violation. But there are rogue cops that will cite or arrest you for almost anything.

Drive safe, obey all laws, and arrive home safely.

A Guide To Your Demographics And Your Endorser

Chapter 10 of 14
A guide to your demographics and your endorser.

It should go without saying, but pick the wrong celebrity endorser and your promotion will be doomed from the start. It takes a careful eye and some intuition to know when you have the perfect match. You must always keep in mind who your customer is and how receptive they will be to the celebrity endorser. Most of this is based on logic but sometimes it can take you to the limit in terms of creativity…cutting edge or edgy promotions are all the rage. However, if you find yourself venturing into the unknown, you must expect to pay the price of possible failure. Although there is a chance you might reap untold rewards either financially, or with effective branding. Our experience is that there are two effective rules of thumb for choosing the correct sex of your endorser. Men and women can sell to men, but most of the time women are best at selling to other women. Women are just more comfortable having a woman sell them something. Men on the other hand, can handle both men and women for the obvious reasons.

When making the final choice for your celebrity endorser, make sure that both age and sex factors are addressed. Also make sure that the celebrity endorser has an apparent connection or link with the audience. Nothing can waste more time and money than having a seemingly perfect fit and then have it turn out to be a disaster.

We once brought a famous pitcher in to do a clinic for kids aged eight to twelve. We had no idea that the celebrity endorser really didn’t get along with kids and had little or no patience with them. What a mistake that turned out to be. So now we always ask questions regarding comfort level with the audience, especially if they are doing one on one’s.

Understanding The Scuba Diving Process

Scuba diving is a very complex sport that requires a hefty state of knowledge before literally diving in to the scuba diving process. There are many dangers that are both obvious as well as hidden dangers that accompany a scuba dive mission and the deeper the dive is, the more dangerous it becomes. There are many specifics and intricate details that have to be dealt with in learning the scuba diving process as well as understanding properties in order to mix your oxygen properly.

The scuba diving process involves learning the basics to diving and must be taken through a certified training course in a certified establishment that uses current equipment as well as provides the absolute latest information regarding the scuba diving processes as well as practices. These are largely geared at a classroom setting initially as before you can dive in to a pool to try out your new knowledge, you must first gain a solid understanding of the scuba diving process.

Finding Certified Scuba Diving Training

The key to beginning the scuba diving process is to start with the very best knowledge that you can gain by researching and understanding the steps involved as well as the guidelines and certifications that you will require to continue on the scuba diving process. The main thing to understand before beginning or considering any scuba diving process is that there are many regulations that surround scuba diving and you have to follow them to the letter as they are designed for your safety as well as to promote the safety of all scuba divers. For example there are many instances where divers have lost lives because they have come up too fast from the depths of the ocean and have perished from the ‘bends’.

In learning the scuba diving process it is imperative to understand such things as the ‘bends’ because it can easily take your life and at very least cause severe trauma to your body, brain and many other organs. This condition is actually caused from the body not adjusting to the different compression factors and can cause the same effect as uncapping a bottle of shaken cola. If you release the bottle in this state it will shake and twist to and fro as the gas escapes the bottle and this is the adequate way to explain the ‘bends’ which is why learning the scuba diving process is absolutely essential.
