An interesting thing I found out was that apart from being share trader I have also become a “Dividend Stripper.” I shall explain this further as to what I do occasionally.

A dividend stripper is a trader who buys shares to qualify for the oncoming dividend and then sells shortly afterwards.

You buy before the “Ex Dividend” then you can sell the next day. Making sure of course you have the dates right in the first place.

But to qualify for the “Franking Credits” you need to own them for 45 plus 2 days.
1 day for buying, 1 day for selling plus 45 days = 47 days. Anything less and you miss out on those franking credits.

An interesting thing to note is that a stock’s share price invariably falls usually by the amount of the dividend paid after the ex dividend date expires.

Another trick is to buy the stock 2-3 weeks earlier in the hope that the share price goes up prior to ex = dividend.

IPO’S

The market seems to be inundated with IPO’S (Initial public offering) these new companies all seem predominately to be in the mining sector. All eager to get in on the current “minerals boom”

A few opened up higher than the initial entry price. Most seem to be exploration of some sort or other. The flavors of the month are either oil or uranium.

These are of course classified as “Speculative Stocks”
Which can mean that once the cash has dried up and they haven’t found anything, they then have to either raise more cash or shut shop? And your cash has gone with them

The rags to riches stories are many, but the road is littered with the crushed hopes and dreams of the unwary investors.

All are searching for that elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

So be wary, do your research, and don’t jump in blind. Be an informed investor.

If it looks to be too good to be true then it usually is.

Impressions

The team at SOG did right with the Trident TF-1 TiNi. Though it looks like an ordinary knife, this folding knife is quite impressive. Field Tests:

I once read a survey somewhere about what one thing you would like to have with you if you’re stranded in the wilderness, and someone answered a durable pocket knife because it’s a tool they can rely on to cut, scrap, dig, and many more things that pertains to one’s survival. Though I hope I would never end up in a situation like that, I have to agree with that statement. A knife is important, and even more important is a knife that’s high performing and extremely reliable. We tested the SOG Trident while fishing and camping at Acadia National Park, on local lakes, and on the Pacific Ocean while targeting salmon, albacore tuna, and rockfish.

The Blade: Aside from useful features the blade is what makes or breaks a knife. Without a quality blade any knife would be a useless tool. The Trident folding knife has an outstanding blade thats ground out of high-grade AUS8 stainless steel flat stock. We used the Trident on the water, fresh and salt, and while camping carving marshmallow sticks, gutting fish, and cutting other miscellaneous items, the blade never gave in and is sharp cutting without difficulty. The Trident blade remained solid and sound throughout our tests and never failed on us once. The stainless steel blade on the Trident model is all the same but the TF-1 test unit has a black Titanium Nickel coating on it. There is a slight downside to a coating because over time its sure to become scratched even though TiNi is a very tough material. Even if the coating can be damaged after prolong use and abuse, this is the model that anglers should use because the TiNi coating not only adds surface hardness but also increases the blades resistance to corrosion.

Ergonomics:

The Trident folding knife holds nicely in your hands. The glass-reinforced Zytel handle is long enough for both large and small hands, and patterned with non-slip for a sure grip. In addition SOG molded the handle with proper curves and positioned the ridges on the handle and on top of the blade for a better hold, even when your hands are slimed by the fish.

Application:

To an angler a pocket knife is very important and can serve many purposes. One very obvious application is cutting fishing line. The blade is sharp and will cut fishing line in an instant. We tried cutting both slick lines such as mono and fluorocarbon and also braided line. With the blade flipped in the open position it easily sliced the braided line with either the serrated or fine edge section of the SOG Trident blade. With monofilament fishing line the blade doesn’t grab onto the line like it did with braided, so in order to quickly cut slippery line you must fold the line over the blade or carefully apply a quick slash - this goes for all knives. The Groove system does the same thing but allows you to cut with the knife in the closed and locked position. We found the Groove very handy and we were able to apply this feature on cutting line in a hurry, and without the fear of stabbing fellow anglers or damaging other nearby equipment. Aside from cutting fishing line with the Groove, anglers can use the SOG Trident to cut rope. In an emergency you will want a blade with a sharp edge that can quickly get you away from danger such as rope wrapped around the prop and youre about to be washed ashore or even rope wrapped around a fellow angler. Opened, the SOG Trident cuts rope very well above and underwater as we tried both of these scenarios. The Groove system can be applied to cutting only those items that can fit in the slot, so most rope is out of the question and best cut with the Trident in an open position.

Conclusion:

Having the right blade can mean life or death for some, especially to an outdoorsman whom relies on a knife thats used for survival purposes. The techniques I’ll describe are the ones the guides use for finding and catching these monster bass.

The primary method the guides use for catching these monsters, is fishing with Florida’s Wild Golden Shiners. We’ll cover other bass fishing techniques aswell but since the primary method and the best odds for boating a trophy is with shiners, we’ll start there.

I once read an article about the Florida Bass fishing stocking program in Texas. A study was conducted, comparing catch rates between native Texas bass and the Florida bass introduced to Texas waters like Lake Fork.

The study showed out of 100 fish caught, 1 was a Florida bass. This told me that the Florida bass is a tougher fish to catch. Arguments can be made that these fish are not swimming in their native shallow warm Florida waters. Also the bass fishing techniques used by Texas anglers differ from what a Florida angler would use.
There are two basic techniques used by the guides:

–Drifting-This method is excellent for covering a large area. Good for finding fish as well as catching them.

Drifting is by far the best and most efficient of all the Florida bass fishing techniques used by the guides for locating and catching fish. This technique is used to cover a large area. It’s especially great for shallow lakes with a large subsurface hydrilla growth. You’ve heard the theory “100% of the fish are located in 10% of the lake”.

This method is the fastest way to find your share of that 10%. Florida lakes, for the most part, are large shallow bodies of water often with a mean depth of 6 to 8 feet. Unlike reservoirs with old creek channels, tree stands, well defined points, current etc. for the fish to relate to, Florida bass are much harder to pattern since they can be scattered anywhere in these vast shallow lakes.
Pulling-this is simply pulling the shiner along a grass line using the trolling motor.

Pulling is free lining the shiner behind the boat with or without using a float. This bass fishing technique is deadly when pulled along a grass line like kissimmee grass. This is one of those times you must use a hook with a weed guard. DO NOT jerk when you feel the shiner starting to get wrapped around the grass. This will only result in opening the weed guard and then you are hung. Just keep steady pressure on the line until he pops free. If he continues to get hung up, check the guard, it probably came open.

Along with summer time and warm weather comes something many dog owners dread like the plague hot spots. This is the most common dog skin problem; causes terrible discomfort for the dog, can be potentially serious and can be very hard to treat.

Hot spots are where the dog has licked incessantly and caused a bald spot with a wet and raw looking sore or skin lesion. These not only look terrible, but also cause the dog much irritation and pain and if infection sets in can cause serious complications. Death can result if the infection becomes serious enough that it has entered the blood stream.

This type of dog skin problem can appear anywhere on the dog’s body and often seems to appear overnight. There are a variety of things that cause these hot spots. Often a dog will receive a small or insignificant scratch from romping and playing outdoors. When moisture is present from the dog swimming, being in the rain, having been given a bath, or rolling in wet grass, bacteria can infect the scratch or small wound. A bacterium invades the area and the hop spot has begun.

The hot spot develops rapidly once the area is infected with bacteria and a serious dog skin problem can develop rapidly within 24 hours. The infection goes into the deep layers of skin on the dog and severe itching and self-trauma develops.

The most common treatment for hot spots is to treat them with a topical antibiotic. The dog skin problem must be thoroughly cleansed and the antibiotic applied to the area. When treatment is first started, the antibiotic needs to be applied often - sometimes as often as every 2 hours. As inconvenient as this is, it is necessary in order to avoid a deeper or more extensive infection. When an extensive or deep area of infection has set in, the dog will often have to be treated with oral antibiotics and the area around the dog skin problem shaved. This involves a visit to the veterinarian and is not only inconvenient but also usually expensive.

Hot spots that cause dog skin problems usually take up to two weeks before the hot spot appears to be healing. Fortunately for the dog, relief is felt much sooner. When your dog first stops the licking and scratching, don’t be fooled into thinking the hot spot is healed. Treatment needs to continue until the lesion is completely dried up and scabbed over.

During the hot summer months, keep your dog well groomed and check frequently for small scratches or the beginning of hot spots. You will save your dog much pain and discomfort and yourself a lot of inconvenience when you catch and treat this type of dog skin problem early on.

Quite often we all get wrapped up in our fears and insecurities, so much so that we find ourselves wishing that we could be someone else. Do not be afraid to ask difficult questions, such as, “do you think I am bad mannered?”, “Do I always come across as being argumentative?”, “Do I talk too loudly?”, “Do I have bad breath?”, “Do you think I am a boring person?” Doing this, the person you are talking with will understand that you are willing to improve yourself. Be willing to accept comments and criticism, do not give answers like, “you’re exaggerating!” Open you’re heart to this person and you may find that you will also be helping you’re friend to improve him or her self.

A song by Whitney Houston says “Learning to love your self is the greatest love of all.” This is quite true. For you to love others you must first of all learn to love your self. Remember, if you do not have love in your heart then you cannot give love.

Before trying to instruct people on how to improve themselves, show them that you yourself have become successful and are now a much better person thanks to self improvement. Self improvement can and does make us better people, we can then go on to give inspiration to other people, and then we find that everyone else will follow.

Stop thinking of yourself as being a second rate person. Get rid of those negative thoughts, such as, “Why can’t I be rich… I wish I was slim” and so on. Accepting yourself for who you really are is the first step to self improvement. You must stop comparing yourself to other people; doing so will only give you even more reasons to envy them.

We all have insecurities to deal with. None of us are perfect. We always wish for better things, better looks, better bodies, etc. Life does not need to be perfect for you to be happy. Self improvement is a way to a better life, to being contented and learning to love yourself. You do not have to shout to the world that you are perfect. When you begin to improve yourself, you will start to feel happy and you will be filled with contentment.

This dusty, ramshackle town sits 33km north of Isiolo and is perfect for budget travelers visiting Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves. At night there’s definitely a Wild West feel about the place, with most vendors plying their goods by candlelight.
There is a small market but little else in the way of services.

Kalama Wildlife conservancy

Eight Kilometres North of Archer’s post is the immense Kalama Wildlife conservancy (Admission including camping Kshs 1500) which was opened in 2004 and hosts wildlife including Grevy’s zebras, elephants and reticulated giraffes. The road network is still undeveloped, but guides (per day 500) lead walks and hikes up Kalama hill. Camping in their three sites is free with admission. This community run project supports hundreds of local families.

About 30km north of town and shrouded in Samburu folklore is the massive mesa of Ol Lolokwe. It’s a great day hike and, at sunset, light radiating off its rusty bluffs is seen for miles around.

Don’t want to camp with the lions and leopards in the national reserve? Want to save some moolah? Head to Umoja campsite; camping Kshs 200) which sits on the Ewaso Ngiro’s banks between town and Archers’ post gate. Its run by women who’ve fled abusive husbands.

Those wanting a roof can crash at Acacia Inns Lkimairr Lodge (off A2 Hwy; s with shared bathroom Kshs 200). The mozzie net-clad rooms are simple and clean. Showers come in buckets and the toilets are crude but they are clean enough. There’s also a small thatched-roof cooking shelter for self caterers. Its enroute to Archer’s post gate and Umoja campsite. While Uaso cafe (A2 Hwy; meals Kshs 60-150) isn’t the only restaurant in town, it’s the only place to eat-enough said.

Of abusive Husbands and Enterprising Women

In 1990, 15 Women who’d suffered too long from violent husbands abandoned their homes and started the village of Umoja (meaning ‘unity’ in Swahili), just outside archer’s post. They hoped to survive together by producing and selling traditional Samburu jewellery to tourists. It all proved rather successful and Umoja thrived, even opening a campsite a few years later.

Boosted by its success, 33 more women left unhappy situations and now call the women-only village home.
Local men were fairly tolerant initially, but apathy became jealousy and they even set up rival trinker stalls nearby. After their stalls ‘utter failure and women’s continued success, there have been reports of angry men warning tourist vehicles not to visit Umoja.

Worse still are the recent raids of Umoja by men threatening these peaceful women with violence, something they had hoped to have left behind for good.
While these women still need support, it would be wise to ask them about the security situation before dropping tent.

Either way supporting these women will mean you making a statement on domestic violence and economically empowering the women (who are very marginalize in the nomadic communities). The men folk, anyway, know better than attack a camper.

Although it’s a widely spread “trend” to call your baby boy or girl with unique and oftentimes weird names, not everything is suitable for a baby and you have to think of how his or her name will affect your little one in the future. There are a few names that don’t fit in the society or culture parents live in so it is a wise thing to do an extensive search for the right baby name.
