Ecommerce or the use of internet and other computer networks for the purpose of commerce has taken the internet by storm and it has surpassed all expectations some positive and some negative. But it took the internet to a totally different perspective that has implications beyond what we can predict at this point of time.

Ecommerce was once considered as the doomed, flawed and as a superfluous application of technology by online psychics and arm-chair pundits which people will not be interested in. They also compared it with the dot com bust and tried to sideline the immense potential of ecommerce only to find themselves in the wrong side with ecommerce and allied applications getting referred, adopted and implemented by millions and millions of sites all over the world.

It is the successful prediction of ecommerce trends that has cushioned the balance sheets of many successful companies and failure to sniff upcoming trends triggered the death knell for most of those who went under during the dot com bust in the 90’s. Sensing upcoming ecommerce trends is one of the top priorities that you have to invest your time and effort into and it pays in multiples of 10 and 100’s.

More and more companies are moving into virtual world a considerable part of their business investments and this is supplemented by the ever increasing number of people who have successfully bought or sold products or services online. To take your business online has enormous potential with the saturation of conventional markets and buyers who are within a geographical limit. Taking it online effectively dilutes all those bottlenecks that costs you dearly.

There is a fairly new dating trend that seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. It is called speed dating. Just what is speed dating? How does it work?

Before we define speed dating, and so as to have a better understanding, let’s first try and trace its origins.

The now very popular dating method is said to have actually started years ago in Jewish communities in the Middle East. In the USA, credit goes to Rabbi Yaacov Deyo. The Rabbi intended this dating method as way for Jewish people to meet in areas where they were outnumbered by non-Jews.

Speed dating can be defined as an organized matchmaking event whose purpose is for people to meet other people (potential spouses) in large numbers. This is the beauty of speed dating: everyone is actively seeking a mate.

Couples rotate from station to station every few minutes (about eight minutes) and meet a new potential mate at each station. Each dater takes turns asking the other person at their station questions until the clock expires and then they move onto the next station. Each dater takes notes on each date so they can sort of who they do or do not want to see again after the speed dating session.

The time limit serves a dual purpose. It prevents getting too engrossed in a conversation with one particular person and also prevents getting stuck with someone you don’t like.

No phone numbers are exchanged directly. Nor is one allowed to ask another out. This is in order to avoid a face to face rejection. An atmosphere of fun and enjoyment is encouraged. Arguing is prohibited. This is one unique feature about speed dating.

At the end of the event, each participant submits a list of people they would like their contacts given to. The organizer then looks for matches - if two people want to share their contact information, there is a match. Matching is done after the event, to avoid facing rejection.

Those in favor of speed dating claim it is a much better, cheaper and safer method of meeting people than going into a bar. They also point out that it is much more efficient than other dating services, such as online dating, since you meet each person face-to-face and can gather information on them quickly. Also, physical attraction - or chemistry - is much easier to judge in person than it is simply looking at pictures online.

Most speed dating services charge between $25 and $60 per person. The fee normally includes a couple of free drinks or a meal or snacks. Most speed dating sessions have between 50 and 150 participants, half male and half female. Lesbian and gay events do exist also.

Critics of speed dating claim that you are forced to spend your time on “dates” with people you are not attracted to and have no interest in, wasting both your time and money. Of course it’s only a few minutes and if you end up meeting that special at an event, it is well worth it.

Hope this answers the question of what is speed dating, and how it works. If you do decide to give speed dating a try just be sure to follow one simple rule. No matter what happens… HAVE FUN!

Fiumicino And Ciampino - The Nicknames Of The Airports Of Rome

If you’re flying to Rome and you need to book an airport transfer there are a few things you need to know. The city of Rome has got two airports: Fiumicino and Ciampino. Their names rhyme and they sound similar, but they are not similar at all and they’re everything but close, so don’t get confused!

Fiumicino, also Known as Leonardo Da Vinci Airport, was the first one to be open to public and still stays the main one. Ciampino Airport, instead, smaller but a little bit closer to the centre, has recently been converted to the transportation of regular people: infact it was once only a military airport. It’s only in the last ten or fifteen years that Ciampino Airport has become just as popular as Fiumicino, and this is due to the great development of low budget airlines in Europe and the boom of low cost flights: companies like RyanAir, EasyJet and many other smaller ones lands here coming form all over Europe.

Fiumicino Airport instead is the Airport of the big airlines and it doesn’t deal with domestic and international flights only, but also with intercontinental ones. Its larger dimensions and its very elegant duty free zone makes Fiumicino airport much better than Ciampino to spend some time in. With its three terminals and regular shops, it’s not only a pleasant place to land in or getting off from, but also a not boring one for waiting for someone to arrive. Ciampino has not such amenities and its dimensions can result claustrophobic for a frequent flyer used to the international airport standards: but it is slowly improving and right in the 2007 a whole new pavilion is about to be open.

Both Airports of Rome, as you can see, are more use to be called with the name of the small village they are close to: Fiumicino is a small town on the sea and it hosts a military port and a big outpost of the Italian Navy (Marina Militare), while Ciampino is a very commercial small town that for the fact to be so close to the actual Rome is seen as a kind of detached district. But while the Fiumicino Airport real name, which we already said being “Leonardo Da Vinci” (from the name of the great genius of the 15th-16th century), is commonly used, no one instead calls Ciampino Airport with its real name “Giovan Battista Pastine”, probably because nobody knows who he was!

Also on your flight ticket to Rome and on your luggage abbreviations of those “nicknames” will be used: FCO stands for Fiumicino Airport, while CIA, far away from indicating the secret services of the United States, will be the tag for Ciampino Airport. So, while you’re booking a car transfer service on the web and they ask you in which airport you’re going to land, just read your ticket and you won’t risk your driver to be waiting for you at the arrivals gate of the wrong Airport.

The scene: an important high school football game, and you’re arriving to get photos of the opening kick-off both for your stock file and an assignment. You’ll leave as soon as you get the pictures — so you have no reason to pay admission. You enter by a side gate and you are met by an attendant with an officious, “Where do you think you’re going?” expression.

You don’t want to allow this fellow to steal precious minutes from you, so you attempt to ignore him. You walk right past him. “Wait a minute!” he says, insulted that you have not recognized his importance. He has the right to detain you, and he does — long enough that you miss the kick-off shots.

Sound familiar? It is, unless you have learned this stock photographer secret: “Officials: Handle With Care.”

HANDLE WITH CARE

As stock photographers, it’s rare that we can get our pictures without first having to get permission from someone. Security is getting tighter and tighter in many sectors, and it’s sometimes understandable that because of past abuses — or the increase in population — it’s necessary to screen who takes pictures of what. You’ll encounter officials in many forms: gate keepers, receptionists, policemen, bureaucrats, teachers, secretaries, security guards. You’ll even encounter unofficial officials: janitors, ticket takers, bystanders, relatives of officials, etc. But no matter who presents her/himself as an ‘official’ (barrier) to your picture-taking, handle them with care and allot an amount of time that you sense will appease their “need” to detain you.

One of the easiest officials-eliminators is the “I need your help” statement. In the case of the football gate attendant, you say, “Could you help me? I need to get a picture of the kick-off (you look at your watch) for _______ (your assignment or name of publication) — could you tell me the quickest way to the 50-yard line?”

If an official wants to know something about you — why you’re here, what the pictures will be used for [incidentally - here's the answer for that one: "I represent the John Doe Stock Photo Agency -- and I'm John Doe -- these pictures go into my on-line gallery of over 3,000 stock photos -- they're used in magazines, books, posters, calendars, textbooks, you name it! "-(smile)] — explain everything to the official, the same as you would to the corporation executive you might be planning to photograph. Often, secretaries will know more about the schedule, commitments, etc. of the boss, than he or she does. Also, it’s wise to cultivate officials who could have access to information helpful to your picture-taking assignment.

When you encounter an official who isn’t cooperative — try offering to give him/her a copy of the picture you’re going to take. But don’t take his/her name on a piece of paper. Such papers either get lost or add to your office work. Instead, offer him your business card and say, “Here’s my address. Write or e-mail me in about two weeks - the picture will be processed by then.” Experience predicts you’ll never hear from him/her.

GAINING ENTRANCE

Should you carry a press card? For large, important events, written permission from headquarters is your best introduction to onsite officials (headquarters usually issues its own press cards, letters of introduction, tags, stickers, etc.). But for the 999 other events you’ll attend, officials don’t ask for a press card — if you’re carrying two or more cameras (around your neck), that’s official enough for them. If you don’t have extra cameras, buy a couple professional-looking (inoperative) ones at a flea market. They’ll be your passport to most any public event you want to photograph.

So if in the past you’ve found “officials” to be resistant — try the “handle-with-care” method. However, there’s an exception: If an official demands: “Wait over there; fill out this form; stand in line; I’ll put you on ‘hold’; I have to check with my boss first;” — then take a different approach: try a different official. In the case of the football gate attendant — if he were uncooperative — walk away, find another gate. In the case of an uncooperative receptionist — wait ’til she goes on coffee break, or lunch. The replacement might be more cooperative ( or you might figure out a better approach). If you carry a cell phone, get the name and number of the CEO. Generally you can get instant permission if your assignment is for a publication that has widespread influence in his/her trade area.

And what if no officials are on the scene? Don’t go out of your way to find someone to ask permission. Volunteers may have no authority (a waiter in a restaurant, an attendant at a conference). Rather than take no pictures (because you didn’t have permission), use your First Amendment Rights and begin photographing. An official will usually come forward — and before he gives you his “routine” — you give him your “I need your help” routine.

One idea that the Harry Potter books has put to bed, surely, is that children and people in general don’t read books anymore. One would think. It comes as a surprise then that a survey conducted by Teletext of a study of 4 000 Britons found that almost half of the books they bought remained unfinished. And second out of ten on the fiction list, of unfinished books, was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This book is the fourth of the seven book series. The last one in the set is due to be available on 21 July this year. The Harry Potter book shares the top ten list of unfinished fiction books with Jade Goody’s autobiography. That is a frightening thought, to have a book listed on the same list as a Jade Goody book.

This new and final book called Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will have a record print run. A record 12 million copies of the book are set to be released in its first US print run. The previous six books have sold 325m world wide and have resulted in four hit films to date. Author J K Rowling has earned, according to a report on BBC, an estimated £520 from her creation. She wrote the first book while a single mother on benefits. It’s really an American reach your dream kind of story.

However, going back to the fact that the fourth book has a high non-finish rating, and it is second on the list of top ten books not finished, one would question why the popularity of the newer releases has not dropped off. This last book will sell more than any one of the others, at least that is the prediction, and it is fairly certain that the targets will be reached.

It seems that the books themselves might not be the issue anymore. Could it be that the hype that the marketing machine has created has relegated the books themselves to the same fate as pumpkin dolls and other fad christmas toys, with other words hysteria to have one and then fairly instant neglect. The marketing machine is really interesting to observe. In December 2006 the title of the last book was announced. On February 1, 2007 the last Potter date was “unveiled” - like a statue of a famous person - and on March 28 the book cover was again “unveiled”. How well is this marketing strategy prepared? Even the royal mail is working on strategies to be able to deliver the pre-ordered copies. The previous book had a pre-order volume of half a million. For the postal service it is almost as busy a time as christmas.

The PR machine has released little snippets about Rowling having signed a plaque of some sorts in the hotel where she finished the final book and that she visited the coffee shop where she used to write when she was on benefits. Any chance she could pay the British government back for the benefits she received then? Not necessary, she has repaid that with the whopping big tax bill on her profits she must be getting every year.

There are the books, and then there is the merchandising and films that go with them. The brand Harry Potter, is something marketers the world over must watch with huge envy. This brand, only ten years old, might have a similar reach as some of the other big brands such as Pepsi for instance. Maybe its on a par with Starbucks. What has been done here with these books, has been a marketing exercise that should be studied in Graduate Business Schools. Brilliant. Well done JK Rowling. It begs the question that other creative works such as painting and sculpture, jewelry or furniture design could do with more focused marketing to create bigger markets for their creators.

An Introduction to the Art of Landscape Design

A small strip of green in your backyard completes the charm of your sweet home. What can parallel the experience of a relaxed weekend amidst the chattering of the birds in the greenery right in your backyard or retiring in the lap of nature at the end of every tiring day! Your tryst with nature will become even more enjoyable if your garden—even if it is small one—is neatly manicured and artistically landscaped. When it comes to landscaping the garden, many people are led by the misconception that you need an expert help to give your garden the desired shape and look. But in reality, it is possible to design your own garden according to your taste. In fact, landscaping can be all fun and easy if you are armed with proper information.

What is garden landscaping?

Landscaping is often described as a pursuit of art, backed up by the scientific knowledge. The aesthetic sense in you makes the garden alluring, while the scientific knowledge serves the practical purposes. Thus in order to get started in your landscaping endeavor, polish up your finer senses of aesthetics and try to acquire information about basic landscaping designs.

According to the basic grammar of landscape designing, there are major five elements of landscape designing. They are:

  • Color
  • Texture
  • Scale
  • Line
  • Form
  • Color: The color is added by the selection of flowers and particular shrubs and plants. The color schemes most commonly used in landscape designing are: monochromatic, analogous and complementary. While the monochromatic color scheme consists of different shades of one color, analogous color schemes are based on the colors which stay side-by-side on the color wheel. Complementary color schemes on the other hand comprise the hues that stay directly opposite each other in the color wheel.

Line: You can create the landscape in a line that is either straight or curved. While straight line has certain force of itself, curved lines appeared to be gentle to the eyes of the beholder and they create an illusion of movement.

Form: Lines are closely associated with that of the form. The form depends on the type of the plantations and their growth habit. Form relates to the aspects of size or area of the garden.

Texture: This factor is not influenced by the plants alone; there are many other objects in the garden like bridge, path etc that add to the roughness or smoothness of the landscape.

Scale: This refers to the size or dimension of any object in terms of the total area of the garden. Good landscaping depends on the sense of the scale and symmetry.

These were the basic elements of landscape designing. Add your imagination and creativity to these basic elements to create your private retreat of peace and tranquility.

Long distance relationships are becoming more common as people travel far away for work, study, or reasons beyond their control. While always challenging, there are ways to make relationships thrive despite the distance. Here are my 7 top tips for building successful long distance relationships….

    1. Plan your long distance relationship
Make time for a serious heart-to-heart discussion with your partner. Face up to all the challenges that you are likely to experience through being so far apart from each other. Be honest and talk about all the ‘what ifs’ and plan what you can do when those occur as they surely will. Make contingency plans for your insecurities, your sexual needs, and what you need to put in place to keep the relationship thriving. The people that enjoy successful long distance relationships do not leave things to chance. By planning ahead, you strengthen your relationship commitment and build your resolve to make it work.

    2. Keep the communication lines open
If you are hundreds or thousands of miles apart, it is easy to feel ’separated’. Successful long distance relationships require daily interaction and sharing (the ‘relating’ to each other bit). Phones, email, texting, postal mail, and web cams… you must use them all. Remember that there is a hierarchy of value to these communication systems. Your best bet is to use a combination of web cam and an internet phone like Skype, so that you can see and talk to each other. Texts and emails are great for short little notes but no more than that as they are so open to misinterpretation. Make sure to send gifts, photos, home movie clips, and traditional love letters via postal mail too. There is nothing quite so rewarding as receiving a package from a distant loved one — it lets your partner know how much you care about them and are thinking of them.

    3. Romantic ideas for long distance relationships
So how do you stay romantic during a long distance relationship? Romance is built on thoughtfulness, creativity and shared experiences of intimacy and joy. There are lots of ways you can demonstrate your romantic side, however far apart you are. Most important to your partner is being reassured that they are still loved and that you are thinking about them despite all the distractions of life where you are. Keep them in your heart by making a commitment to staying in regular contact. Send thoughtful and romantic care packages, as discussed, by mail. And make time for alone time together on your web cam internet phone get-togethers. One of the most romantic things you can do for successful long distance relationships is plan your future together. Talk about what you are going to do in the future. Always speak in terms of how much you are looking forward to being with them physically and sharing a life together. Plan what you are going to do when you meet up next time. And make the most of your memories and shared experiences. Talking about the fun things that you have done and will do is great strategy for keeping the chemistry alive in any romantic relationship. Be sure to give your partner regular and frequent re-assurance of your love and commitment. Watch out for misunderstanding and strive to get clarity in all your communications with your long-distance partner. Make sure when you are on the phone or web cam that you are alone. That way you can express yourselves better and there will be nothing to distract you.

    4. Coping with sexual frustration and temptation
If you are healthy, you are going to be horny and it’s hard to get satisfaction if your partner is the other side of the country, or worse, the world. It is essential that you are both perfectly clear on the boundaries of the relationship. Some people are okay with the idea of their partners seeing other people while they are apart. But most are not. Clarify your own relationship and the level of commitment you are willing to give each other. Assess the likelihood of temptations. If your sweetie is off to college on the West Coast while you are going to college on the East Coast, you have to decide how strong your relationship is because you are both going to face major temptation in the form of other people who are actually there in front of you. Every couple is unique and only the pair of you can decide whether you can realistically commit. The secret is to maintain those communication lines and include lots of time for high-tech intimacy in the form of phone sex and web cam sex. Obviously you need a high level of trust in a relationship to do this, as you do not want to discover your beloved has posted your naked pictures online! Successful long distance relationships make provisions for sexual frustration by scheduling ‘fun’ time. More than that they focus on the experience of intimacy and depth and that is part of all your communications. The more you reveal of your true self the closer the relationship becomes. As for coping with temptation, this is where your commitment comes into play and the future planning that you do. Most people can get by on the promise of the hot stuff! Just make sure you carry through on what you say you are going to do to each other when you meet up!

    5. Overcoming feelings of jealousy and fears of cheating
All romantic relationships can experience jealousy and fears about cheating, but generally long distance relationships take longer to resolve those feelings. The grass always seems greener on the other side especially if one partner has gone away somewhere exciting while the other is at home. If every time you talk to your beloved there appears to be a party on in the background, no wonder you feel jealous. The important thing is to not beat yourself up about it. It’s natural to feel a bit jealous and insecure. It is going to happen, so accept it and do not let it escalate. Maintain your own high self-esteem and high self-worth. Keep doing the things that you enjoy doing. You are a valuable, attractive, interesting person. It’s important for your own mental health that you adopt the attitude that your partner is lucky to have you in their life. Think that you are the best choice for them. Successful long distance relationships use the distance to have a clearer perspective on the relationship. Acknowledge the reality that you could form a successful relationship with any number of people. But you have chosen to build a wonderful relationship with this person who just happens to be a long distance away at this time. With this perspective your relationship is always based on choice. With you choosing to create a loving relationship rather than it being about neediness, craving or thinking this is the one and only.

    6. Dealing with doubt about your feelings
Accept that it is natural for your enthusiasm to lessen at times. All relationships wax and wane, so refuse to see it as indicative of a failing relationship. Do not be afraid to express your feelings within a context that is safe. If you have planned well, you will have provided for this eventuality and you will both know that it is just a natural part of being apart. Evaluate where you are and where you are headed in the relationship. Make sure that you have shared relationship goals to aim for and that you are actively talking about your next physical meeting and any future life plans. People who live very much in the moment can often find it harder to maintain touch with their feelings for someone while apart. If that is you, make sure both you and your partner understand that you might not be as demonstrative from a distance. In this situation, it is best to try and schedule more regular meetings if possible. But it is also important, for your life not just your relationship, that you gain a better and longer time perspective. The most successful people financially are those who think and plan 10, 20, 30 years ahead. The same is true in relationships. Successful long distance relationships occur when both parties see the separation as temporary and having a finite duration, and that they are building towards a future together

    7. Successful relationships at a distance and close-up
Ultimately you want to find out how to successfully love another person and how to create a blissful relationship. The fact that you are going to be apart for a while is just another challenge that you need to rise to. Relationships are full of challenges. Things are always coming along to throw you off balance. That is life. The trick is to adapt and overcome life’s challenges. In traditional wedding vows, the couple make promises to each other that they love, respect and care for each other through thick and thin, in rich times and poor times. There is a real magic in a commitment like that. Making a vow of that nature builds deep love between two people. Deep love is something you can only experience with time and commitment. It enriches your soul. You feel fulfilled by it to your very marrow. Successful long distance relationships are built by people committed to love and being loving to each other. Love is a verb. It is something that you can choose to do. Often times choosing to love involves hard work. But the rewards it pays outweigh anything else you can get from this world.

People today are concerned about colloidal silver, its effects on health and potential side effects. Silver, when it reaches human body produces specific effects. What are the negative effects and what are the positive ones? This article tells you briefly about all aspects of colloidal silver.

What is Colloidal Silver? Colloidal Silver is basically silver particles suspended in water. These sub-microscopic particles are neither filtered nor deposited at the bottom of the container. Other than silver particles, silver ions (a silver atom with one electron removed and has a positive charge) too can be present in colloidal silver products.

PPM (parts per million) refers to the concentration of the material in a medium. The same number is derived if you find milligrams of silver per liter (mg/l) of water. Thus mg/l and ppm are the same. Different companies sell colloidal silver of different concentration. The concentration of 20ppm has the qualities of fine size particles, uniform suspension and silver particles in ionic state are lesser than 20% of the total silver content.

The size and concentration of silver particles are variable (1 nm to 1000 nm). The variations are due to different factors including the purity of the silver, purity of the water and the speed of manufacturing process. The smaller the particle size, the better its performance will be.

    The Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing of colloidal silver is akin to electrolysis process, where silver wires act as the electrodes and distilled water with a little of colloidal silver as the electrolyte. The electrodes used are pure .9999 (99.99%) silver rods and the water is distilled. Tap water, water purified by reverse osmosis etc are not used in the production of colloidal silver. No salt is added to increase the conductivity of the water either.

Effect of Colloidal Silver on Living System Colloidal silver has anti-microbial properties. It acts as fungicide, bactericide and virucide (viricide), killing the microorganism and preventing the chance of adaptation for anti-silver resistance by the microorganisms. The silver first disables the respiration capacity and affects the metabolism of the unicellular microorganism.

Silver doesn’t affect the cytoplasm of multi-cellular organisms. There is difference in cell structure of sub-microscopic organisms and that of animals and plants. Thus colloidal silver is harmful to single celled microorganisms, but is harmless to plants and animals.

Colloidal silver is used for topical applications. It is used as an antiseptic in the treatment of bruises and wounds. When used in wounds, colloidal silver acts as an antiseptic and facilitates quick healing.

Wheat fed to cattle sometimes die from a bloating disorder known as wheat pasture bloat, feedlot bloat, free-gas bloat or frothy bloat. Wheat and barley are fed to cattle because they are a cheap source of high protein grains. These grains result in rapid weight gain for finishing cattle off for slaughter. However, if too much wheat or barley is fed to cattle, especially high gluten containing wheat, the cattle can die. In pasture bloat, the stomach or rumen as it is called in cattle, accumulates excessive gas putting pressure on the heart and lungs leading to death. I have patients who tell me that they feel like they are dying because of the pain and bloating they experience. Some have even said they wish someone could puncture their stomach to let all their gas out. Most no longer feel that way after starting a gluten-free or wheat-free diet. Their bloating is gone.

My wife grew up in rural Missouri. Her family had cattle. When I asked her if she had ever heard of pasture bloat she told me a story of trying to help the local veterinarian save one of their cows that developed pasture bloat. Despite puncturing the cow’s stomach letting the gas escape, the cow died anyway. Recently, while horseback riding with my daughter, the guide complained about how the horses kept stopping to pass gas and loose green stools, blurting out “we think it’s the hops”. The ranch gets discarded hops from the local beer brewery that they feed to their horses. Gluten containing hops are giving the horses gas and loose stools!

Many of my patients also complain about being unable to lose weight. Yet a diet history reveals that, like most Americans now, they are getting more than 20% of their daily calories from carbohydrates containing gluten. If the cattle industry knows that wheat and barley grains rapidly fatten cattle we should not be surprised at the obesity epidemic in our grain and carbohydrate heavy diet. In contrast, overweight and obese people on a gluten-free diet frequently lose weight. Many people who have celiac disease are overweight or obese. Unfortunately their diagnosis is usually missed because of the misperception that you can’t have celiac disease if you are overweight. This is false. Many people with undiagnosed celiac disease are overweight as well as constipated. They usually do have severe bloating symptoms though.

The low carbohydrate diet, by nature a low gluten diet, is so successful because people lose weight and they note that their headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, brain fog and bloating are better. They lose weight and they feel better. They are therefore motivated to continue. However, reintroduction of carbohydrates, especially those that are high in gluten, results in weight gain and feeling well. However, giving up gluten can be difficult. There are cultural issues, increased cost, and other inconveniences that have to be overcome. Also, gluten has addictive properties. Gluten is broken down into morphine like proteins called gliadomorphins or gluten exorphins. These well-characterized chemicals have many effects including addictive properties and function impairment.

My GI training led me for years to advise people, especially those with irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulosis, to eat plenty of whole grains and to take fiber supplements. This is also the recommendation of the U.S. government in our Food Pyramid. I eventually stopped pushing whole grains and some fiber supplements because so many patients complained of increased bloating, gas and abdominal discomfort. As an expert on celiac disease, I realize that recommendations of whole grains and gluten containing fiber supplements are not only unhelpful to but also harmful to many people.

Feedlot bloat usually results in a slimy frothy coating of the cattle stomach (rumen). I frequently see this mucus or slimy coating on the surface of the small intestine of my patients when doing endoscopy. I suspect this may be due to excess carbohydrates in the diet. The accumulation of intestinal gas in cattle is due to their inability to eructate (burp). Some cattle become some ill they must be slaughtered early. Increased bacteria production has been implicated. Fermentation of these grains is also believed to be involved. Excess protein content of some wheat like winter wheat high gluten, is also to blame. Wheat is fermented faster and much more than barley, sorghum or corn.

So, why is wheat given to cattle? It is inexpensive. It produces very fast weight gain and more weight gain than other grains. However, great care must be exercised in using wheat for fattening cattle. Supplements are required because wheat alone can result in low calcium levels that can cause grass tetany, a form of muscle spasms or paralysis. An exclusive or very high wheat diet can cause a ruminant acidosis (high levels of acid in the blood) that is also fatal to cattle.

Is your diet consisting of large amounts of calories derived from wheat and gluten containing carbohydrates? Are you overweight and constantly feeling bloated, experiencing unexplained muscle cramps and aches, headaches, balance difficulties, and abdominal pain? Maybe you should learn from the cattle industry since the doctors are not likely to tell you the truth about the dangers of a grain-based diet. My goal as the Food Doc is to help empower you with the knowledge you need for a healthy gut, healthy life .
