Our choice of veterinarian can be one of the most important long-term decisions we can make for our cats. Many people make the decision based on cost. Others make it based on the office closest to their house. Cost and location are important consideration but there are other things to take into consideration when placing your cat’s life in someone’s hands.

1. Accessibility. Location is part of accessibility. While the best vet in the area may be “only” forty minutes away, what if you have an emergency? Do you want to drive that far? If you are choosing a veterinarian closer to you, what is their policy on emergencies? Can you get your cat in as soon as you need to or do they refer to another doctor? If they have multiple doctors in their office, can you request that the doctor you regularly see treat your cat once the life threatening emergency has passed?

When considering accessibility, you also want to consider how easy it is to reach the veterinarian by phone. In many cases technicians are more than capable of answering questions about your pet and setting up appointments if it goes beyond their knowledge, but what about when you have a specific question about blood work? Does your veterinarian return your calls promptly?

2. Communication. This can be a big issue. If you have questions about your cat’s health, can your vet answer them so that you understand them? Do they talk at the level you understand? Many people have medical backgrounds. They don’t need a doctor telling them in simple general terms about what’s going on with their pet’s blood work, they want to know the actual numbers. Other people just want to know what those numbers mean. Can your veterinarian talk to you?

3. Specialization. Should you go to a veterinarian who specializes in cats? Many people choose to do this. They like an office where there are only cats. Their cats are not exposed to barking dogs and the visits are less stressful. Other vets have separate entrances for cats and for dogs, which can make it easier for cats who are stressed by dogs.

Veterinarians who specialize in cats often have a better grasp of cat specific illnesses simply because they only treat cats and are more likely to be exposed to these illnesses. They can be a font of knowledge about some of the more unusual cat breeds as well.

Whether or not your veterinarian specializes only in cats is less important than whether or not your veterinarian appreciates the bond you have with your cat. They should understand that your cat is very important to you. They should be able to honor that bond.

4. Costs. Cost is important. No matter how wonderful or knowledgeable the veterinarian is, if you can’t afford to see them, there’s a problem. If you can’t afford any veterinarian, you might want to consider delaying adopting a cat. Medical expenses happen.

Some clinics are more expensive than others. Some clinics also insist that owners always do thorough blood work and recommend expensive diagnostic tests and treatments without offering the owner any other more “cost effective” options. While the most expensive may be the best way to go, it’s important to know that if there are alternatives, your veterinarian will tell you about them.

5. Comfort. Are you comfortable in the office? What about your cat? While going to the vet is rarely a cat’s favorite activity, an office that makes you and your cat feel more comfortable can ease a lot of stress. Consider how you feel upon thinking about going to the vet. If it’s very stressful for you, your cat will know. They’ll be stressed as well. Look for an office that will make you feel more welcome and works on easing your fears and your cats fears.

There are many wonderful veterinarian offices out there. No one office is the right office for everyone. Communication styles differ. Different office decor can make some people comfortable but not others. The most important thing is to find the vet that fits you and your cat.

Situational Spanish

How did you learn your first language? Chances are, you began by putting short words together, then short phrases, then short sentences around your daily activity and play. You learned through taking visual and auditory cues from your parents and others around you. Your learning was situational. You repeated and repeated the same familiar, useful words until you got them down automatically. You were never asked to learn something abstract or diagram sentences grammatically-not until you were much older. Most of the time, the language learning process was accomplished through play and quality time spent with parents and other caregivers.

My business partner, Ian Sanchez, taught himself Spanish as a second language by making it part of his daily routine. In his youth he joined a mostly Hispanic soccer team, and soon became fluent with the vocabulary of soccer in Spanish. He quickly could communicate perfectly well with his team mates, even though he was not yet able to communicate effectively in Spanish off the soccer field. Gradually, situation by situation, he gained the Spanish vocabulary needed for fluency in the language in almost any situation. By concentrating on learning situationally he avoided the frequent problems that adult language learners have of getting embarrassed, bored or frustrated with the process. He used what he was learning, cementing it into his memory, just as a young child does with the first language.

When looking for Spanish language courses, keep in mind how you learned your first language and look for tools that will make the learning experience both fun and relevant to your daily activity. We remember what we use, see or hear repeatedly. When the learning is fit into our daily activity or play, then it comes naturally with little angst or effort. The total process may not necessarily be fast, but it is effective and it does not seem like work.

No matter what Spanish learning program you use, it is possible to add situational components with only a few minutes a day of effort. For example, just prior to fixing dinner, look up in a bilingual dictionary words for common foods and cooking activities, jot down a few words per day and look at the list as you are cooking. When you’re comfortable with nouns, add some descriptors and make some phrases. Think about those as you go about your cooking activity and practice them out loud. As you get comfortable with phrases, add typical verbs used in preparing a meal and write down simple sentences, with the assistance of some of the Spanish learning courseware you may already have available to you. Practice these sentences aloud as you are in the kitchen. Better yet, if you’re cooking with family members make games and brief conversations out of the experience. Don’t worry initially about perfect pronunciation or perfect grammar. Just get out there and do it!

A new language learning company, World Words, has created tools that will assist in situational Spanish learning. A free e-book available at the site introduces many fun ways for kids and their parents to learn basic Spanish together. A colorful removable sticker set and CD help to build Spanish vocabulary for common words around the house. These tools are available at http://www.world-words.com

See You And Be You

I taught my son when he says bye to someone to add ’see you and be you’. Apart from the humor in it, there is a lot of meaning to that greeting.

Do not be surprised to learn that people are not usually themselves. In fact some people cannot just ‘be’ themselves or ‘be’ themselves..the second ‘be’ is the type that cannot live independent of another person be it -family or friend.

They cannot take initiatives,be proactive, make decisions and jump on it in a timely manner.

The first ‘be’ category are like the hollywood character followers, they feel incomplete if they are not wearing designer clothing and don’t mind going into debt to portray this facade of a lifestyle.

Be yourself.Be you..it is a powerful statement.Express your individuality.Variety is a spice of life. You are more likeable this way.God created you to be unique you.Don’t live in another man’s shadow.Don’t copy everything the other person does. It’s scary.

And don’t try to struggle to always share in the other man’s spotlight. That simply means you are not secure and you are not happy when the limelight is on the other person. It’s selfish.Don’t bother getting on DrPhil.Let God be your DrPhil.

If you just don’t know the how to or what tos things of life: learn , search the internet, use available resources, read books, subscribe to magazines. Have your own sense of style.Even identical twins, though they look alike are never the same completely. As much as they look alike, or may share similarities, their personalities will always be different, so will be their callings in life.God is not going to say “Well done, my good and faithful twin servants’ ,He is going to talk to one as an individual: “Well done, my good and faithful servant”

I like to be me and I do not apologize for it.

God has a reason for creating me the way I am.

So much said, See you and Be you.

Our outlook on life can determine life or death for us according to the research presented below. I’ve had a lot of health challenges in my life and I know that my optimistic attitude has allowed me to fare much better than many I come across with the same health problems.

This year I’ve gotten a glimpse of where I got some of that optimism and determination. My father has had a series of operations this year and on each one he was released earlier than expected and bounced back so well the doctors were amazed. Family members were stunned at the constitution of this man.

In December he went in for an angiogram and they kept him for triple bypass surgery. They discovered colon cancer. He recouped from the bypass and three months later went in for the colon surgery which was successful without chemo or radiation. After two months of wearing a temporary bag to give the colon time to heal, they opened him again to re-connect the intestine. He’s now recovered from that surgery also.

From the beginning of these surgeries he’s known that he had to have surgery for an aneurysm which was to be scheduled this month and in the process of tests along the way they informed him he would need to have carotid artery surgery also. It’s been a year of doctors and hospitals but his determination to get through the hurdle and onto the rest of his life has been an inspiration to many.

We have to choose how we are going to think.

There are medical costs for pessimism, and corresponding benefits from optimism. For example, 122 men who had their first heart attack were evaulated on their degree of optimism or pessimism. Eight years later, of the 25 most pessimistic men, 21 had died; of the 25 most optimistic men, only 6 had died.

Their mental outlook proved a better indicator of survival than any medical risk factor, including the amount of damage to the heart in the first attack, artery blockage, cholesterol level, or blood pressure. And in other research, patients going into artery bypass surgery who were more optimistic had a much faster recovery and fewer medical complications during and after surgery than did more pessimistic patients.

Like optimism, hope has healing power. People with a great deal of hopefulness are better able to bear up under pressure. In a study of people paralyzed from spinal injuries, those who had more hope were able to gain greater levels of physical mobility compared to other patients with similar degrees of injury, who felt less hopeful.

Hope is especially telling in paralysis patients and how the person reacts emotionally has broad consequences for the degree to which he will make the efforts that might bring him greater physical and social functioning.

Why an optimistic vs. a pessimistic outlook should have health consequences is open to several explanations presented by the medical world. One theory proposes that pessimism leads to depression, which in turn interferes with the resistance of the immune system to tumors and infection. Or it may be that pessimists neglect themselves since some studies have shown that pessimists smoke and drink more, and exercise less, than optimists, and are generally much more careless about their health habits. Or, they say, “it may one day turn out that the physiology of hopefulness is itself somehow helpful biologically to the body’s fight against disease.”

There are many things in the Bible being proven true by science and that last statement is an interesting thought to a scientist, but it’s a Truth to a Christian if we choose to believe what God’s Word says:

Psalms 39:7
And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.

Psalms 43:5
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Jeremiah 17:7
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

Romans 8:25
But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

1 Peter 1:21
Who by him [Jesus] do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

It’s interesting that studies have shown that the immune system instantly weakens when you frown and put on a tragic face. But when you smile your immune system and your entire body perks up. Turns out that there are various pressure points in your face that affect your entire system when you flex certain facial muscles. That should make you want to smile every chance you get. Smiling will make you more attractive as you age also, so get used to wearing a smile all day, every day. You’ll be amazed at how many people will smile back and give you unexpected energy.

My prayer for you is:

Romans 15:13 - “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”

Let Me Tell You a Story - Using Narrative to Persuade

I woke up really early this morning, my brain buzzing with ideas for writing this article. It was dark and cold outside and quiet all through the house. I had some thoughts about writing about sales persuasion techniques. Typing “persuasion” into the Google search engine, I found Dave Lakhani, Internet marketer and persuasion expert at www.howtopersuade.com.

On his homepage there was an interview with Lakhani that I could play on my computer. Dave began by telling of growing up in a cult in Idaho. He described how he moved there with his mother, how people acted in the tightly controlled environment, and the circumstances surrounding his leaving at age sixteen.

Lakhani told a compelling tale. I was fascinated and began to believe the guy had something interesting to teach. About halfway through the interview, Lakhani was asked what were the persuasion techniques he could not live without. He answered, “Number one is stories and storytelling. The better storyteller you are, the better you can influence. Stories slide in under our emotional BS detectors. People listen to stories.”

Later at the office, I remembered I had seen an article about storytelling called “Let Me Tell You a Story….” In it, Doug Stevenson wrote, “You can give a speech about your book that’s a dazzling display of your vast intellectual knowledge, but when all is said and done, people remember stories.”

Storytelling is more than just an entertaining way to get attention. Stevenson continued by saying, “You memorize and retain chunks of information contained in the story because you see the images, hear the sounds, and feel the emotions. The story engages your attention for a sustained period of time, so when the storyteller makes the point, the learning sticks.”

Stevenson takes this a step further in his Story Theater Workshops ( www.storytheater.net). “Rather than narrating these moments, the storyteller ’steps in’ to the imaginary reality of the moment and re-creates it in real time. These moments transport the listener to an active state of participation.” (Members can find Doug Stevenson’s article archived in the Members Only section of the SPAN Web site.)

Stories are the superglue that makes your points stick, Stevenson concludes. “They inspire people to take action-in your case, to buy your book.”

It’s the end of the day and I’m back at my home computer, as my chicken casserole bakes and I sip my afternoon coffee. I’ve been sitting here awhile and thinking about how publishers can use stories to market better.

Verbal stories are the first place to start. Speeches, radio and TV interviews, and book signings are all places publishers meet their customers. Since we are talking about storytelling to persuade, let’s also include networking events, phone calls, business meetings, and conversations.

Dave Lakhani believes even written communication is processed verbally by the brain. This gives writers tremendous opportunities to use the tool they know best and to persuade in their written marketing efforts. Web sites, brochures, e-mails, Internet newsletters, direct mail letters, news releases, book jackets, and above all, books should be filled with stories.

Both experts emphasize that your stories should be relevant to the point you are trying to make. Although funny stories and jokes can break the ice, they positively work like magic to strengthen your case and persuade your audience.

The sun is setting here in Colorado Springs and I have to get dinner on the table. I feel like I shared a part of my day with you. I hope you learned something about persuasion. I’ll let you know how the casserole turned out.

The Honey of God’s Word

As I read my Bible today, I noted again that anxiety is nothing new. David mentioned it in Psalm 139:23-24:

” Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

The first true “in the face” introduction to anxiety being sin was when I purchased a copy of “A More Excellent Way” by Pastor Henry Wright.

Yes, I know the Bible says, “Be anxious for nothing,” and that it is a command. I just never looked at it from the angle of it being sin since it seems everybody does it.

But then….everybody doesn’t.

Like me, you surely know some people that look like they must live on a different planet because the worries of life don’t seem to affect their peace and joy. I’ve wondered what genes they have and if they are really human.

David is stating that “anxious thoughts” are “an offensive way” to the Lord and requests to be led a different way. How exciting that David’s words can be power for us even today! We CAN remove anxiety out of our lives and minds. We can choose to ask God to lead us in another way and if we choose to take those initial steps and keep taking them, He can provide peace in the midst of any storm.

His Word is all-powerful, but we have to feed on it and meditate on it all day long as Psalm 1 instructs. If we don’t feed on the Word, we will feed on the enemy’s lies and those thoughts will bring health problems.

My long-time friend, Dianne, recently called and told me she was really focusing on harvests. The beginning of that is a seed and she’d heard that every seed is programmed to burst forth in a specified amount of time. You’ve seen the seed packets telling you how many days till germination when you’ll see those little sprouts peeking out of the dirt.

She mentioned something that I wrote down and have been focusing on myself:

That our words, thoughts, and deeds are all seeds in the Kingdom of God. We plant/sow these seeds and we harvest/reap the results of them. If our thoughts are seeds …. what kind of crop have you been planting?

Ever wonder why it seems that life takes you from one trouble to the next? Maybe it’s because of what we’re planting with our thoughts!

“A More Excellent Way” was written to expose the spiritual roots of disease and to show you the thoughts and beliefs that are underlying various diseases so that we can be free of dis-ease and live life with the ease that God offers in His peace and joy.

Jesus died for this! It is no light matter to God. We are to be anxious for nothing, but by prayer with thanksgiving, let our requests be made known to God.

Ask today to be led away from anxiety and feed on His Word and chew on it all day long as you would a piece of gum. Remove the bad taste of the devil and put in the honey of God’s Word.

A website plays an inevitable role in the promotion of your online business. The success
of a website greatly depends on its design, as it allows connecting easily to your target
audience. But, it is now often seen that many websites are not generating expected
profits because of certain flaws in website designs.

Here are five major website design flaws that will Immediately turn your visitors away!

·Inability of home page to convey information clearly and quickly: The home page
has a prominent position in the overall success of a website. A home page must
necessarily be able to tell customers what the site is as well as its prime offerings.

·Lack of proper organization with regard to navigation. A website is of no use if
it is not able to provide what surfers are actually searching for. Hence, a well-defined
structure as well as navigation is not only necessary for visitors to easily find content
but also to create a positive impression on the websites.

·Inconsistency in the style of the website: It is important that each of the pages in a
website must be designed or handled in a uniform way. For example, if caption is used in
photos of a particular web page, then use them on every photo of the website. Likewise,
if links are colored blue in one web page, then adopt the same procedure in other web
pages as well.

·Excessive usage of Macromedia Flash and other features that lead to slow loading of
pages- It is important to note that websites with over usage of flash mostly don’t have
good rankings with such top search engines as Google, Yahoo, and MSN, since these search
engines cannot properly read contents designed within flash. Further, extensive usage of
colors, graphics, and complicated HTML code may also affect your ranking with top search
engines. Hence, for best results, it is recommended to keep pictures and effects to a
minimum.

·Mistakes in spelling and grammar: Correct usage of spelling and grammar is highly
important to get a good first impression from your website visitors.

It doesn’t matter if you are a small firm offering computer parts to local businesses or sell clothes to a wide range of international consumers, launching your bricks and mortar venture across the Internet will most definitely work in your favor. Before you can increase the awareness and interest in your business, there are a few things you should consider, which will make this transition into the World Wide Web much easier. Below you will find a few tips to get you started:

1) Assess Potential Start-Up Costs

Before you commit to creating an online presence, you should be aware of all start-up costs, which for some may seem quite intimidating. Website design doesn’t usually cost an arm and a leg and if you possess any creative skills, the final total will be much lower. For the average start-up site, costs are often seen between $500 and $1000. Websites also require a hosting company, which could cost about $20 to $30 per month. Those following a tight budget can find less expensive substitutes in all areas of website design, hosting, and maintenance; it just might take a little longer to locate.

2) Offer Up-to-Date Information

Since customer service is handled across the Net, it is important to keep all website information up-to-date and easy-to-find. For those who need additional information before making a purchase, it is vital to offer alternative means of contact, such as email addresses, telephone numbers, and store address. Businesses with a direct customer service line are highly attractive to the curious consumer.

3) Consider Search Engine Optimization

Once your website is complete, you can optimize it for popular search engines, such as Google and Yahoo. It is quite common for some businesses to fall victim to submission scams trick unsuspecting webmasters in paying a fee for multiple search engine submission, so be careful of what services you use.

4) Request Reciprocal Links

Amplify your chances for increased traffic to your site by establishing a reciprocal link relationship with another website. For instance, if you sell fashionable dog outfits, you may seek out dog food companies and pet shops that might find interest in trading links. Some websites quickly climb the ranks of search engines because they possess a high number of reciprocal links.

5) Consider Common Website Traffic Tactics

Don’t be afraid to explore website boosting tactics, such as cost per click search advertising to attract more visitors to your site.

6) Don’t Forget the Little Things

In the rush and excitement to launch your business on the Web, don’t forget the little details that are so very important. All bricks and mortar websites should display their company mission statement, contact information, map to business, and hours of operation.

If there’s one sure way to destroy your peace of mind, it’s having unrealistic expectations of others.

In an ideal world, everybody would act the way you want them to act, there would be no friction or conflict, and life would chug along smoothly all the time. But we don’t live in an ideal world and should quit acting as if we do.

Most people are self-centered, so they behave in their own best interests, not yours. If you think about it for a moment, that’s exactly how you act, isn’t it? So why should others act differently than you do?

We get upset because the President doesn’t do what we want. We get angry when we get put on hold on the phone. We fume because other drivers have taken all the parking spaces close to the store.

But if you were President, you’d do what you thought best, even if others disagree. If you were running that customer service department, you’d keep your budget down by putting people on hold instead of hiring more representatives. If you had first choice, you’d also take the parking place closest to the store.

Somewhere along the way, we each got the mistaken notion that the world revolves around us, that others should cater to our wants and needs and that we should never have to wait or be treated rudely. If we persist in that fantasy, we set ourselves up for constant frustration.

Most of our agitation is self-created because we have unrealistic expectations of others. Our ego gets bruised. We’re shocked because we’re treated with disrespect.

Peace of mind demands that we overlook the selfishness of others. When we anticipate that other people will think of themselves first, we’re not disappointed. When we give up the idea that we deserve special treatment, we defuse most insults.

No one wants to be a doormat. Our self-respect requires that we stand up for our rights, but when we’re prepared for less than perfect treatment, we’re not shocked when we receive it.

So what’s the solution? Should we resign ourselves to being treated like a number instead of a human being? Should we have such low expectations of government leaders and business people that we routinely put up with incompetence and shoddy service?

The answer lies somewhere in between. Our only recourses with bumbling politicians is writing a letter or voting against them. A calm, well thought-out complaint can often get a business to improve its customer service if they think they might lose customers.

We can maintain our peace of mind when we acknowledge that every person has a couple choices in a given situation. They can choose to agree with us or disagree. We also have choices if they disagree with us. We can make a catastrophe out of the incident or we can regard it objectively and dispassionately.

When we understand that our peace of mind cannot be taken from us, that only we have the power to surrender it, we become disturbed by fewer and fewer nuisances. When we compare the preciousness of peace of mind against the fleeting satisfaction of becoming upset, our choice is easy to make.

If you’re a single person, you can live a happy, confident, optimistic life using the proven principles in Jack Zavada’s new ebook, Single & Sure

Many gardeners have given up on the idea of a garden because they lack space, time or lots of experience. But if growing plants is an interest of yours container gardening could be your answer. Container gardens will allow you to enjoy “playing in the dirt” without investing a lot of time or money. You can get very creative in container gardening using vegetables, decorative grasses or flowers and herbs. You can plant a container garden with any plant that would grow outside. The trick is to come up with some creative ideas for your container garden.

You should do some research at your local nursery or on the internet to choose the plants you wish to grow to help you come up with some ideas. Try to use plants that complement each other and have the same basic needs for water, air and light.

A container garden idea that has taken off recently is the landscape container. Some people plant a simple evergreen tree in a container with good drainage to place at their front door. Or you could plant an assortment of flowers for a bright and beautiful vista. If you do plant flowers, add plants that spill over the sides of the container to add more visuals and interest. What ever container gardening idea you can come up with can be placed on a deck, patio, and balcony or by the front doors. Put them somewhere that your family and friends can enjoy.

You can grow vegetables in containers but choose wisely. Vegetables like squash and pole beans need lots of space, while tomatoes need a deep pot. When you grow your own vegetables you will have tasty produce not the bland stuff that is in the grocery store. Nothing tastes better than a tomato right off the vine. There are many chefs and good home cooks that grow their own for just this reason. Don’t forget to pot some herbs, they are pretty plants and add zest to your meals.

But don’t just stick to vegetables and herbs; why not add fruit trees too? Instead of using an evergreen tree, pot a fruit tree instead. There are many dwarf varieties available that work best in pots since with pots there is less soil therefore less nutrients to draw from. If you live in a year round warm climate citrus trees are perfect. In other regions, stick to pear, apple and cherry trees. Another good container gardening idea is to grow strawberries. With strawberries climate does not matter since you can bring the container inside. Fresh strawberries are amazingly sweet and delicious. Imagine how good a bowl of fresh strawberries will be, strawberries that you have just picked.

Remember that container gardens dry out more quickly than traditional gardens. Be diligent about watering your plants if you don’t want your container gardening ideas to wither and die. Container gardens must be fertilized too. Keep a small notebook handy so you can write down the needs of your plant so you will always know when to water or feed. Keep an eye out for pests. If you find a container that has an infestation, isolate it immediately and treat it with a natural pesticide. You don’t want harsh chemicals on fruits, vegetables or herbs. A good natural pesticide recipe is:

In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.

So, do some research, come up with your own unique container gardening ideas, gather your materials and get to work. The fruits of your labor will be amazing.

Happy Container Gardening!
