In the first part of this installment we examined how to build a road map to get to your destination. We talked about training the nervous system with a foundation style routine. Then we moved on to strategic body part training to build symmetry, balance, and the optimum proportions of your physique.

The final stage we looked at was the advanced stage where a combination of size and symmetry training would be employed to maximize the development of the whole body. Keep in mind it’s best to follow a systematized scientific training regime in order to advance through the three stages of training.

In Part II of this series we are going to examine the most common challenge bodybuilders face, which is nutrition. Unfortunately there is so much confusion about what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat and on and on that it is almost impossible to sort out what to do. Also eating to grow is very different than eating to get shredded, so the key point to remember is that your diet needs to evolve with your physique.

The Importance of Consistency And Self-Discipline

Consistency and self-discipline when it comes to your eating are the two biggest keys to long-term success. Bodybuilders who are successful always plan ahead and have meals prepared well in advance.

If you don’t plan out your meals and have them with you at all times you will invariably fail in giving yourself the best possible gains. Hoping that restaurants, or friends or relatives will be serving “bodybuilding food” is unrealistic and leads to frustration as well as no progress.

Almost every person I have every met that could not gain or lose weight did not prepare there food in advance. It sounds simple, and it is simple but few overlook this critical point. Don’t be one of those people who don’t prepare their meals in advance.

In every training course I create there is a whole section on food prep to keep you on your eating program. I learned these food preparation and food avoidance skills over years of trial and error. Fortunately, you don’t have to you can simply learn from someone who has already learned the hard way.

Many people think that sticking with a diet or specialized eating plain is a matter of will power or won’t power but in reality it’s all about having the right food ready and available when you need it. The old saying of “Be Prepared” is the Mantra of every successful eating program whether you looking to gain mass or to lose fat.

Here is a few simple Food preparation Rules that I have learned. I suggest you print this list out, stick it on your fridge, or put it somewhere you can review it until you have the list memorized and the actions become automatic. You will be surprised how easy following your eating program can be when you follow these simple guidelines.

7 Strategies To Stay On Your Eating Program

1. Always carry 1-2 meals with you more than you think you will need. This way any delays in your schedule will not throw your eating off.

2. Always eat before you go shopping, to the movies, or to other social occasions where non-nutritious food will be served this way you will reduce any cravings for junk or hunger induced binging.

3. Prepare food in bulk and use Tupperware containers so that you can grab quick meals at any time. You will find it takes very little extra time to prepare 10 meals as it does to prepare one meal. This savings in time will actually make your life way more efficient and your eating plan easy to stick too.

4. Get off all artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners cause cravings for sugar, mess up your metabolism and brain function, and may have negative effects on your overall health. Cut them out of your diet immediately and switch to Stevia, or Raw Honey for sweetening. NO Diet Sodas.

5. Drink plenty of water each day. Most often dehydration is misinterpreted as hunger. Slug back a liter of water 30 minutes before eating or when you feel hungry and you will see how it curbs appetite significantly.

6. Place nutritious snacks in you car, your office desk at your house basically everywhere that you spend a considerable amount of time. You will quickly develop the habit of eating healthy and junk foods will quickly lose their appeal.

7. Schedule a regular junk food meal once per week. This is a powerful lesson that starts building the will to understand delayed gratification. Every time you have a craving for junk food simply write it down and schedule to eat it on a set day. By the end of the week you can review the list and go eat those foods guilt free. Often times by the junk food day you won’t want the food or it won’t taste as good as you anticipated. Over time you will develop more control over your cravings and reduce negative guilt associations with food.

This list isn’t “the be all and end all” of eating but it gives you a basic understanding of exactly what is needed for you to successfully stay on your eating plan.

The Evolution Of Your Diet

Keep in mind that your eating program will evolve over time. Your body will naturally adjust from desiring different types of foods depending on a variety of factors such as season, nutrient levels, PH balance of the body, training demands, and conditioning levels to name a few.

Recording how food affects your body, your moods, and your performance is critical. I call this information biofeedback and it is critical to monitor your biofeedback so as to develop a greater understanding of the powerful effects of food on your mood and your performance.

Review your eating journal regularly so you become aware of your eating patterns as well as developing awareness of how each food affects your body. Clients are always surprised at how much they can learn about food just by charting their eating patterns for a few months. Having a coach, or someone who monitors your biofeedback regularly is also a great way to stay accountable for what you put in your mouth.

One final note on successful eating practices is to remember you must master eating and training first before supplements can be effective. So many people try the other way around and wind up frustrated. The only supplements that needs to be considered when learning to master your diet is: Enzymes and probiotics, Live Proteins, Minerals, Vitamins, and Essential Fatty Acids.

I call these “Whole Food” Supplements. In other words these food supplements are a whole food themselves and a requirement for the proper functioning of your digestive tract, your immune systems, and your metabolism. Whole food supplements are essential to building the best physique possible and will ensure you stay healthy, and happy for many years to come.

Avoid Becoming A Shot-Gun Supplement Victim

“Shot-Gunning” a random bunch of herbs, hormonal precursors, “blood volumizers”, ‘fat-burners”, testosterone enhancers and the endless list of products hawked at you mercilessly by “Snake Oil Supplement Companies” is a surefire way to waste your money and become another victim of the Snake Oil Supplement Gang.

Whole food supplements will always outperform these “One Hit Wonders” short-term, and over the long haul.

No supplement can make up for a poor diet or poor training so vow to master these two facets first before wasting money on supplements. Once you master your diet then the right supplement at the right time can do wonders to improve performance, but seldom does the supplement deliver when the diet is poor.

In the third part of this series we will look at the importance of having a “Big Reason Why”. This is the final and the most important key, for you to realize your full physical potential.

When I ask people what their financial goals are, saving money is always in the top 3. But they also tell me that they don’t know how, or they don’t have any good ideas. Well, good news - I’ve done the work for you and I hope to challenge your thinking.

Now, wouldn’t you rather use some money for something else - paying off debt, saving for a holiday, investing, etc?

-1. Decide what you want to save and transfer it out of your main account as soon as you get paid

Somehow, you will make the rest work with your budget. I’ve been saving this way for the last 10 years and I’ve only ever had to take some of the money out about 6 times. If you don’t have anything budgeted for savings, then start with a small amount. You’ll get hooked on saving soon enough and that amount will start to increase.

-2. Write down your expenses, day by day.

Yes, it is a bit annoying to do this, especially at first. But if you want to know where your money goes, it’s the quickest way to find out. And you’ll notice that after a week or two of accounting for your money, you start automatically correcting your course. Suddenly you realize that your 3pm daily habit of Coke and a Bar One from the vending machine works out to a substantial amount every month. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t ever get anything fun. Buy two snack packs of chocolates at the grocery store to last you the month, and just like that, you’ve saved stacks of money.

-3. Never go shopping on an empty stomach.

You’ll end up with a trolley full of junk food that you normally wouldn’t have bought had you not been starving. When I heed just this one tip, I cut my monthly food bill by about 30%!

-4. Make a list of errands before you leave the house

When you do this, you can plan your route and also make sure to do everything you need to do. Otherwise it’s a case of “we forgot to pay the phone” once you’re back home. You then waste time and petrol having to go back the same way.

-5. Always, always, always use a shopping list

You can download one from my website. Use a fridge magnet and attach it to the front of your fridge. Then train your family to mark off the item as soon as it’s nearing empty. What’s the point of adding toilet rolls to the list when you’ve just used the last one?! It’s easy to be assaulted by all the sale signs once you’re inside the store. A shopping list helps you to focus. I’m not saying that you’re not allowed to be flexible. It’s just that with a shopping list, you make sure that you definitely get everything you need.

-6. Check the lower shelves in stores

Stores pack all the most expensive items at eye level, so next time you buy some salad dressing or whatever, don’t just grab the first thing you see. Compare the prices of all the brand names, being sure to look at all the items. It will take a bit of time the first time you do this, but once you’re used to it, you’ll know.

-7. Only buy enough fresh produce for your needs

You can get so easily hooked with the “3 bags of tomatoes for R20″ and “2 cucumbers for R10″ signs. But if you stop to think about your needs, you’ll realise that you don’t need 3 bags for just 2 people. I used to think that they only sold them packaged like that until I took one bag of tomatoes to the till one day and … lo and behold, nothing special happened. They only charged me for one bag!

-8. Try online grocery shopping, especially if you’re an undisciplined shopper

We have good friends who have been shopping online for about 3 years. She swears that they save at least 20% every month, and that’s after paying the delivery charge. That’s because it totally eliminates all the impulse buys - food on a hungry stomach, and cute stuff.

-9. Never go shopping when you’re cross or upset.

This is a variation of number 3 except for the fact that you’re likely to feed your emotional hunger. All the ladies know what I’m talking about. You’re cross because of something that happened at work, go to the mall and end up buying a lipstick, handbag or clothes that you don’t need. We all do it - some of us just buy bigger items than others.

-10. Always pay your accounts on time to avoid interest charges.

Remember that with credit cards, your purchases are interest-free for 45 days BUT if you’re a day late, you’re not only charged interest for the day; interest is charged from the purchase date.

-11. Plan your meals

When you plan your meals by the week (as I do) or by the month, you will save money. Firstly, you can use up all the food in the freezer before buying more, and secondly, you’ll know exactly what you need to get from the shops. I have a look through my freezer to check that there’s enough food for the week. I then make my list and go shopping. Then on Sunday afternoon, I decide which meals we’ll eat on which days and attach my meal planner to the side of the fridge. It then takes me maximum 30 minutes to get supper on the table every night. See? Saving you time and money! Download your meal planner from my website.

-12. Eat more pulses

Pulses are things like lentils, kidney beans, chickpeas, etc. They are a great source of protein and you can use them to replace the meat in one or two meals a week. For example, use lentils as a mince substitute for your bolognaise sauce, or top your baked potatoes with a chickpea, tomato, spinach and cheese sauce. Delicious! Not only will you save some of your meat money but you’ll be healthier too.

-13. Limit the number of cleaning products you use

I use a multipurpose cleaner, toilet disinfectant, dishwashing liquid and a multipurpose gel. I could combine the last two but I must confess - I’m hooked on my brand of dishwashing liquid. I use the multipurpose gel for washing the car, cleaning windows and mirrors, as a shower spray, to clean carpets, etc. All you do is squeeze a generous amount into an empty spray bottle, fill with water and shake to mix.

-14. Look out for a free car wash

I’ve noticed that many service stations offer a free “wash and go” if you spend a certain amount on petrol. Look around you and start using these services.

-15. Switch from fizzy cooldrinks to water

You will save hundreds every month and… you’ll also be healthier and will lose some weight.

And now for a bonus….. hire a financial coach

Yes, initially there is an investment. But over time, the rewards will be HUGE. Your coach will help you to accelerate your progress and help you to pay off your debt and save some money.

Happy saving! My wish for you is financial happiness!

Maria Pascucci, president of Campus Calm, had the opportunity to talk with Richard Kadison, M.D., about why high schools and colleges are seeing a rise in the number of stressed-out students battling mental health problems. Kadison is the chief of the Mental Health Service at Harvard University Health Services and author of College of the Overwhelmed: The Campus Mental Health Crisis and What to Do About It. Kadison has specialized in campus mental health and student mental health treatment throughout his career.

Campus Calm: Why are college campuses seeing a rise in the number of students with mental health issues?

Kadison: There are lots of reasons we’re seeing a rise in the number of students with mental health issues. We’re seeing more students who get diagnosed with serious problems in high school and they’re functioning well enough to get to college. That’s one group. I think there is the millennial group of students with what are described as helicopter parents who hover over them, and basically make decisions for them. You know the old metaphor about teaching people to fish instead of getting them fish. I think there’s a lot of handing out of fish that goes on in high school. Kids are also being shuttled from one activity to another, kind of building their college resume and not having much down time and not really feeling passionate about things.

Campus Calm: How big of a part does the lack of sleep, eating right and exercising play in students being stressed out?

Kadison: The lack of sleep, I think, is a huge issue. College students are sleeping an average of 6 1/2 hours each night and they definitely experience symptoms of sleep deprivation, which screws up their immune systems, impairs their academic functioning and makes them more susceptible to depression and bipolar disorder.

Exercise is another huge issue. There’s good evidence for milder forms of depression, four days of 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise works as well as antidepressant medication. A lot of students get busy, stop exercising and eating healthy, get more depressed, have more difficulty getting their work done, then start stressing out and have more difficulty sleeping. They get into this vicious cycle.

Campus Calm: How much of a part does perfectionism play in the lives of stressed-out students? How does Harvard’s counseling center deal with academic perfectionism amongst students?

Kadison: That’s certainly a big issue here and I would say, most elite schools. I talked to the directors of the other ivies. There are two major thrusts. I would say one is trying to create some balance in students’ lives. They need to take care of themselves. Working all the time is not the best way to live. Having conversations with them about excellence versus perfection and working hard and trying to focus. But no one test, no one course, no one situation is going to make or break your life. Lives take twists and turns that none of us expect.

Number one: you need to learn how to be resilient. Number two: learn some techniques and skills to manage stress because what you have in high school and college isn’t going to change once you get out into the real world.

Campus Calm: Whom do you see more of: overachieving guys or girls? Is it true that women seek help more than young men? Why or why not?

Kadison: In terms of more women seeking care, I think probably that’s because women are more tuned into their emotions. There’s less stigma. I don’t think the numbers are different — it’s just that men aren’t always wise enough to come in to talk to some one about it.

Campus Calm: How do you work to help students find meaningful ways to base their identities beyond grades & awards?

Kadison: That’s exactly the challenge. It’s people figuring out who they are — we all have faults, we all make mistakes and we all do things we wish we hadn’t done. The key is really to get to know yourself, figure out how to accept yourself and do the best that you can. Getting students outwardly focused, again in balance, so that they’re engaged in their community. There’s growing evidence that the more students are doing something to help their community, like working with high school kids, or volunteering somewhere, those students have much more satisfactory experiences in college than students who are completely self-focused. It’s creating an environment where that’s really encouraged and rewarded.

Campus Calm: Do you think that our current academic culture allows kids to learn how to make mistakes and fail safely?

Kadison: Well, I think part of the process is really the education of the whole community. It’s not just the students. We try to do outreach activities and provide consultations to faculty, staff and residential staff. The reality is though, if the culture in the lab is that the professor is in the lab until 3 a.m., and expects everyone else to be there until 3 a.m., that’s not a healthy message for students.

I think mental health advocacy groups are a good idea because students listen to other students more than other professional adults. Having advocacy groups so students can hear that getting depressed in college is nothing to be ashamed of and it’s very treatable if you come and talk to someone about it.

Campus Calm: Is an Ivy League education always the best way to reach success?

Kadison: I think that students can get a great education at any school. There’s students who come here to Harvard and don’t get a great education because it’s a bad fit for them. Being around other bright people who are totally focused on their academics doesn’t help them learn how to create any kind of balance in their lives. That leads to a disappointment.

Campus Calm: So many students see straight A’s and other academic achievements as stepping stones that will lead them to a good college, which will lead them to a good graduate school, then to a good job and, ultimately, a happy life. Does our society put too much emphasis on this one path to happiness and prosperity?

Kadison: As far as students seeing grades as stepping-stones, I think that’s true. There’s some reality in there and it’s also a problem. I think to some degree this is up to the college admissions folks, that leading a balanced life and being engaged in your community is just as important as being successful academically. Doing other things that you feel passionate about.

Obama & JFK - Neckties & Hats

As a hatter, I find the brouhaha over Barack Obama’s aversion to neckties very reminiscent of a prior day (I am holding back from using the now cliche “deją vu all over again”). The neckwear industry is certainly holding their collective breath (and likely putting their bucks behind Hillary). John F. Kennedy’s objection to wearing hats is legendary in our industry. As the story goes, JFK killed the hat business. And here’s where the comparison to Mr. Obama and his necktielessness becomes noteworthy, because the fact of the matter is that the trend toward hatlessness had been building since the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.

Neil Steinberg’s very good book, Hatless Jack: The President, the Fedora, and the History of an American Style debunks the JFK hat murder myth [I suggest the book to anyone interested in the details]. Suffice to say, Kennedy’s preference for going bareheaded was part of a trend that had been building for decades. He did not start the trend - as he is commonly accused - but he did accelerate it.

There surely is a trend towards abandoning neckties. Few men willingly put on a tie these days. According to Wikipedia, “While still common as late as 1966, over the years 1967 to 1969, the necktie began falling completely out of fashion nearly everywhere, except where required. After a brief fashion resurgence in the 1980s, the 1990s saw the appearance of Internet-based (or dot-com) companies, where most workers did not feel the need for formal dress when facing clients, since the business’s public image and appearance was websites rather than face-to-face meetings. There also was a sentiment of independence (general liberalism) and a new way of doing things.”

Media pundits are fond of making comparisons between JFK and Obama. Well, here is another. If Barack Obama makes it to the White House, history may very likely blame Mr. O for neckwear going out of fashion. Like Kennedy and hats, it won’t be true. But, he certainly may give the current disinclination for wearing neckties a big boost. Now, if he’d just put on a hat.

What is stopping you from really getting what you want from your business? This is a question I ask small business computer consulting company owners on a regular basis. Many times business owners are like waves crashing onto a beach. They approach a project much like a wave does, starting out many miles away from the coast or, in this case, project or idea.

A great idea gets started much like a wave does out in the ocean and it starts to gain momentum as it gets closer to the coast as well as rising and showing form. Many business owners follow this same approach to their projects or business needs in general. They start off with a great idea, build its momentum and start to create a swell rising in height.

What happens next is that it crashes onto the beach. Business owners can attract others to ride this wave, business surfers is a good way to look at it. These are members of your team, business coaches, outside consultants or anyone that can help you in this way. However, when the wave starts to lose momentum the surfers fall off, and leave the business owner still heading toward the beach.

When a wave finally makes it to the beach, it immediately starts to retreat back to the sea, sometimes sucking other things with it. The undertow of your business idea or project crash can kill any business. Undertow in the ocean has been known to pull debris and even people out to sea, drowning them. Is this happening in your business? Is your undertow drowning your business or business ideas?

How can you prevent your business from getting sucked back out to sea? Determination and persistence are a great starting point. Nothing will kill a business faster than the business owner losing his or her determination to see the task to the end and the persistence to get what they need in under to successfully make it on shore and stay there.

Assembling the right team is critically important; having the right surfers riding your waves for the longest time possible is a major key to ensuring that your business goals and projects reach completion. This means that you have to create the biggest wave possible to allow them to ride for a long time. All surfers eventually fall off the wave, this is a fact but you want them on there for the full length of the run.

When you make it onto the shore you want to ensure that you stay there too and do not get sucked out by the undertow. This means you need to smash through your goals and objectives in business so that you can avoid getting sucked back. The more you can make it past the finish line the more successful you will be in business. Many small business computer consultants never make it to the objective; they quit when the end is in sight and get sucked back to the sea.

You may be lucky enough to start a new wave; however that may take too long to happen. When you finally have the next opportunity, the beach or shoreline will more than likely change and new surfers are ready to ride your waves. Make your ride count today so you can avoid being sucked out to sea.

5 of the Best Weight Loss Tips for Long-Term Success

If you’ve decided that you need to lose weight, it is important to devise a plan that you will follow long-term. Long-term weight loss should not be a plan that you follow a few months, then you go back to eating the same way that got you overweight in the first place! It is important to your long-term success that you make permanent lifestyle changes in both your diet and daily exercise. Here are 5 of the best weight loss tips to help you achieve your goals:

1. Always eat breakfast.

How many times did your hear your mother say this is the most important meal of the day? She was right! By ensuring that you have a balanced and nutritious breakfast each morning you are helping to give your metabolism a kick start. Not only will you no longer be tempted by sugary snacks half way through the morning but the calories you consume will burn off a lot faster.

2. Don’t skip meals.

As long as you eat your meals at regular intervals then your metabolism will improve even more. On top of that, you won’t be as tempted to eat unhealthy snacks because you are hungry. Many health professionals now recommend eating 5-6 smaller meals a day. Eating every couple of hours will keep you from ever feeling hungry, will aid your digestion, and will keep your metabolism working at top speed.

3. Take your time.

Actually sit down for your meals, take your time, and savor each mouthful. Unlike our ancestors, most people in the Western world are eating far too much and eating it far too quickly. By slowing down the rate at which you eat your food you will give your body time to signal you that it is full. You will find that this often happens with smaller portions if you take the time to eat slowly and chew thoroughly.

4. Take control of your portion sizes.

It is important that with any meal the amount of food on your plate should be no larger than your two fists. So if you go out to a restaurant for a meal either order smaller portions, if possible, or take half your food home for another meal. Restaurants are notorious for serving portion sizes that are much too large for the average adult!

5. Get Active.

A great way of getting active without having to go to the gym each day is just by changing your daily routine. For example, if you go to work on the bus then get off a couple of stops earlier and walk the rest of the way. If you work in an office that has elevators, then why not use the stairs a few times a day? It is fairly simple to add more walking to your life, and the benefits are many.

These ideas are very simple, but they are some of the best weight loss tips you’ll find. And you’ll find them even easier to implement!

An effective weight loss program does not have to mean deprivation or back-breaking exercise routines. To discover simple strategies for lasting weight loss and a free book of delicious recipes, be sure to check out my Painless Weight Loss Tips blog at: http://www.painless-weight-loss.com/

My Favorite Top 10 Comedic Movie Actors

People are always asking me, “What are your Favorite Comedy Movies?”, “Who is your favorite Comedian or Comedic Actor of all time and who is your Favorite working today?” and questions such as that, as if I have a better take than they do. But that is not true. We are all affected in the same ways from the same stimuli. I guess the only difference is that maybe it influenced me in some way, maybe even subconsciously and very possibly shaped my own stage personna somehow. So anyway, here we go.

My absolute Favorite Comedic Movie Actor of all time was beyond a shadow of doubt, Groucho Marx. I used to laugh out loud so hard watching The Marx Brothers movies as a kid and still do ’till this day, which probably explains why my Favorite Comedy Movie of all time is ‘A Day At The Races’. The scene with Groucho as Doctor Hackenbush on the phone driving Mr. Whitmore absolutely nuts is hysterical. And of course, who can forget the notorious operating room scene when all three Marx Brothers are examining Margaret Dumont and all the mayhem that ensues.

The physical comedy of Harpo, the musical comedy of Chico and the lines that Groucho would get away with in those glorious movies are still so memorable and still hold up today. The most amazing thing to me was the double entente insults and sexual innuendos that Groucho would say, especially for that era. I mean it was, after all, the 30’s and 40’s and the censors must have been pulling out their collective hair.

I also don’t want to forget about some of my other Favorite Acts of those great comedic times. Abbott & Costello were the best of both worlds in Comedy. They were Cerebral and Slapstick at the same time and their routines will live on as long as there are people living and laughing. Bud Abbott, even though he was labeled the best straight man in the business, was an incredible comedian with flawless timing. Without him the comedy would not have worked. Their chemistry together was impeccable.

Let’s also add in Laurel & Hardy. How could one not love them. They had a sweetness about them and it came across in their comedy, no matter the situation they were in. Does anyone, besides me, remember the movie in which Laurel gets his head banged by a closing window in a college dorm room and he becomes a super intelligent, strong sports hero. Apparently that was who he was until a similar accident happened many years before while he was attending Oxford and he became the Stan Laurel we were all accustomed to. Oh, don’t worry he hits his head again at the end and becomes himself again…..Classic!

During the 50’s & 60’s I loved to watch Jerry Lewis movies. I know people like to throw the word ‘genius’ around a lot but he truly was. I loved ‘The Errand Boy’. The premise being that he was an errand boy for Paramutual Movie Studios and all he had to do was what he was told to do. But of course, he screwed that all up and somehow ruined all the movies being made at the studio by either accidentally being on the set at the wrong time and getting into the movie. Or how about the time he goes into a sound studio and by playing around he unintentionally does a voice over of a song that on the soundtrack, was supposed to be a woman singing.

Well, to cut to the chase, as all of the studio executives are watching all the dailys and previews of all the studios movies ( One of my Favorite Comedy Scenes), people are laughing their respective heads off watching and listening to this fool. They think it is part of the plan and of course, a star is born. I loved the old Martin & Lewis movies also. The Stooge was terrific with many great scenes. It was almost biographical in a way.

Gene Wilder in The Producers with Zero Mostel is absolutely brilliant. What a terrific performance, as always. And that was just the beginning of his body of classic work. Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Lady In Red, and the fabulous movies partnered with greatly missed, Richard Pryor: Stir Crazy, Silver Streak, Another You (One of my Favorites they did together) and See No Evil Hear No Evil. Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor together were so much fun to watch. I know it’s a term that gets used a lot, but I simply loved their chemistry together. They had perfect timing, which is so essential in Team Comedy.

Now on to another one of my Favorites, Peter Sellers. What an amazing body of work this man created. The masterpiece Dr. Strangelove in which he played more than one character is timeless and such a tour de force. He played Dr. Strangelove, The President of The United States and an English Soldier and played them all brilliantly. Then you have all of the Pink Panther Movies as Inspector Clouseau. I loved watching that bumbling character that everything seemed to work out for and how that drove Inspector Dreyfuss insane, literally. Great Physical Comedy at it’s best! One of my favorite scenes in those movies was the one where he is masquerading as a dentist and has to pull out Inspector Dreyfuss’ tooth (Herbert Lom). He proceeds to give him Nitrous Oxide, laughing gas, and the result is hysterical. He pulls the wrong tooth and the both of them are completely overwhelmed by the gas and are laughing continiously throughout the scene. Fantastic!! I also loved his last performance in Being There. That really showed his talent as a Comedic Artist. The character was so simple yet the plot was so deep on many levels and still was funny at the same time. He owned the rights to that story for quite a while and I am so glad that he finally got the chance to do it before his demise. It would have sad not to have that movie in his credits.

My Favorite Comedic Actor of today is a 4-way tie between Bill Murray, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams & Tom Hanks. Bill Murray gets the edge here for me because as soon as I see him on screen, I am smiling and then laughing. He always has that smirk on his face that conveys that he is putting you on. Stripes, What About Bob, Caddyshack & Groundhog’s Day are so wonderfully funny. I could never imagine anyone else playing those parts. Jim Carrey is the modern day Jerry Lewis for me. He is absolutely so rubbery and animated but most importantly, so over-the-top.

I love comedians and comedic actors that are fearless and aren’t afraid to let go and he is one of the few……Chris Farley also comes to mind in that respect. It is a real shame that we lost him so early. I can only wonder what he would have achieved in the years to come. I really respect Tom Hanks & Robin Williams tremendously because not only are they great comedic actors but also can deliver drama equally as well. They can make you laugh and then make you cry in the next moment. That is a rare gift and a great talent.

And then there is the imcomparable Eddie Murphy, who I think is a Fantastic Comedic Actor with incredible presence on stage and on screen. Not many compare with his consistency. He stole the show in Trading Places, 48 Hours 1 & 2, and Beverly Hills Cop 1 & 2 and as Peter Sellers did, was brilliant portraying all of the characters in Coming To America and of course, The remake of The Nutty Professor. I loved all of those people he created in his family. ‘Hercules, Hercules, Hercules!’

So, here it is:
My Top 10 List of Favorite Comedic Movie Actors
1. Grouco Marx with The Marx Brothers
2. Abbott & Costello
3. Jerry Lewis
4. Laurel & Hardy
5. Bill Murray
6. Jim Carrey
7. Peter Sellers
8. Gene Wilder
9. Richard Pryor
10. Robin Williams, Tom Hanks & Eddie Murphy (Tied for 10th)

Alright, so there’s more than 10 people on there. So sue me.
Well, that’s it for today and for my Favorite Comedic Actors of All Time in Movies. Of course, there are so many more great ones that I have loved to watch over the years but those are the ones that have made me laugh the hardest consistently and sometimes until it hurt! Who are your Favorite Top 10? Good luck narrowing your list down. It is very difficult.

In the days to come, I will write about my Favorite Comedy TV Actors & Shows, Favorite Comedy Movies, Past & Present Day Comedians (Ones that are famous and ones that people should know about but might not), Comedy Albums and anything else I can think of.

Tomato container gardens are an alternative to a traditional tomato garden. Tomatoes are one of the most popular vegetables, well in this case fruits, of people around the world. They can be used in so many ways, in a salad or to make a sauce for pasta and a myriad of other ways in your culinary pursuits. Sadly in some places tomatoes are being priced at three dollars per pound or more. Fortunately, everyone can grow their own tomatoes, even people that live in apartments. The answer is to grow a tomato container garden. You can grow them on a patio or balcony or in a bright sunny room in your home.

The number one essential is sun. Tomatoes require a lot of light and will not thrive without out it. The materials you will need to gather for your tomato container garden are simple. You will need containers that are about five gallons in size. Only plant one tomato plant per pot. You will need soil, tomato seedlings and stakes or a wire cage to hold the plant upright. String, or products called twist-tie or sturdy-tie will be needed to tie the plant to the stakes or cages. You will need a plastic tray for drainage; good drainage is essential to the health of your tomato container garden. Last need on the list is fertilizer.

There are some species of tomatoes that will do better in your tomato container garden. The bush varieties of tomatoes work well in containers and are popular with container gardeners. Cherry tomatoes and Christmas Grape tomatoes work well also because of their size and many gardeners grow them when space is limited. Other varieties that will flourish in a tomato container garden are Celebrity, Early Girl, and Sweet 100’s. It really depends on which variety you want to grow and for what purposes. If you will be growing them mainly for salads the cherry varieties are the way to go.

As mentioned before, sunlight is a requirement in order to grow your tomato container garden. Scout out the area you are planning to use for your tomatoes. The spot for your tomato container garden must get at least four to six hours of sunlight. The more light the better since the sun promotes healthy, steady growth. The two most important elements for success in tomato container gardening is sunlight and water.

By growing your own tomato container garden you will know that there were no pesticides used on your plants. With all the controversy going on about pesticides knowing that yours is pesticide free is an advantage for you and your family. Here is a good natural pest deterrent:

In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.

Other pluses to this type of garden is you no longer will be paying high prices for tomatoes, your containers won’t take up much space and one plant usually yields enough tomatoes to feed your family. The cost of a tomato container garden is minimal and the feeling of accomplishment is great. So why are you waiting to plant your tomatoes? It’s time to choose the variety of tomato you want to grow, pick up some containers and start your tomato container gardens today.

Happy Container Gardening!

Short Sleeves Insights - My Offering Is Peace, What’s Yours?

“If while you are presenting your offering to the altar, you remember your brother has a grievance against you, leave your offering there upon the altar and go make peace with your brother.” Jesus, according to Matthew 5:23, is where you can find these words.

Pretty powerful message about how we deal with the emotions that cause anger, hatred, fear and war in our world. I think what he was saying was, resolve the conflict you have within yourself first, then you will be able to resolve any ill feelings you harbor for others. Once that’s achieved, you are connected to your God on the altar of love, within you.

I don’t know how many millions of people want peace, I know it is a great number. We all try in our own ways to bring about resolutions to conflicts that are currently in the news. Everyone has his own way of dealing with these issues, many pray, many fight, many pray and fight, some ignore it, and others fuel it. No matter how you feel about it, your thoughts do effect what you focus on. If war is what I bring into my life, even though I’m against it, there it will be, I have attracted it. Whether I’m for or against it, the universe is giving me what I think about, war.

Each Sunday churches are filled around the world, united in the belief that we don’t want war. Each service has its own message on how to deal with the issue, and each person has his own belief about injustice. It may be our collective consciousness is really fueling what we pray to resolve. By lookiing to the other side to relent and think my way, I am trying to control an action, that restricts the universe from giving me what I want. My thoughts make resolution difficult unless I release myself and believe that peace already exists, that is my prayer and I see it in my mind, I live it and share it. I am not ignoring reality, for reality is peace. Which one do I want, war or peace? My choice, my thoughts, my life.

Dwight Eisenhower said; “One day the people of the world will want peace so much that the governments are going to get out of the way and let them have it.” We are our government, if our prayer is peace within ourselves, we will elect those who are peace, and that will be what we experience. There will always be contrast among diversity, that is how we learn and grow. From those lessons we can present ourselves, as we are, connected to All There Is, Love. My offering is peace. What’s Yours?
