So much of our life is spent in public spaces today. Whether at work or play, many of our endeavors away from home are in places specifically for the general population. After any period of time passes, hours or even days, we are ready to get away from it all, relax and retreat to our comfort zones.

After being incorporated with the public for any length of time and having to meet the world on its own terms, it is such a relief to get home, kick back and enjoy your own personal space.

Busy executives, professionals and determined entrepreneurs are good examples of people who are away from home most often. Career people. Dedicated to the cause. I wonder how often they actually allow time to themselves to relax, take a time out and enjoy their personal spaces.

Not to forget the blue-collar workers. The backbone of America. Battling the elements every day, looking forward to the creature comforts at the end of their shift.

So let us define these spaces. It does not necessarily have to be a whole house or apartment. Perhaps it will be your recliner, or sitting at the kitchen table. Wherever it is, the surroundings are familiar and the sounds are comfortable and sweet. Your mind can drift away and the ringing in your ears from the hustle of traffic disappears.

Comfort and peace can overcome you with just a short nap, a soft pillow, a warm home cooked meal or a pizza delivery. A good book or a TV program allows your thoughts to wander. You are beginning to relax now, and your eyes, knowingly or not, look around at the objects in your personal space.

Pictures of your family or close friends may adorn a wall or two. These alone help you keep your life in perspective as to who you really are and where you came from. If you notice, the music from your stereo system does the same thing as it plays an old familiar song.

On your desk or countertop, maybe even a junk drawer, holds a keepsake of yours. The bag of marbles you had when you were a kid or an autograph from one of your early heroes. You are comfortable keeping these things and would be close to being devastated if somehow they were destroyed or came up missing. They mean a lot to you. Peace and perspective.

You have decorated your personal space. Intentional or not, you have created a space of comfort and a retreat from the absurdity of the world. Not consciously aware of homemaking at the moment, you may decide someday to paint the walls, carpet the hardwood floors or maybe move the candy dish from the living room to the kitchen. The wrought iron candleholder can be dusted tomorrow along with the coffee table. The dishes can be washed later. Reminding yourself how well you take care of your personal dwelling, you promise yourself things will get done. Just not tonight.

You are totally relaxed now in your personal space. Hopefully you realize how gainfully you deserve it. You worked hard today. Or played hard. Tomorrow is another day, but for now the hour is yours.

Not everyone has the chance to catch their own shrimp. I caught mine by mistake but I kept them anyway. My son and I were fishing on the old Pensacola Bay Fishing Bridge at Pensacola, Florida. When the old concrete bridge that crossed the bay was replaced by a new and modern structure three miles long, the city made the old one into a recreational fishing bridge.

I understand that one of the hurricanes of the past few years did her in and there’s nothing left now. It’s sad because “the bridge” was my favorite night fishing spot of the area, as it was for hundreds if not thousands of other fishermen.

Almost any warm evening, especially in summer, fishermen of both sexes would be lined up on the railing of the bridge with their lines cast as far out into Pensacola Bay as possible. Every once in a while someone’s rod would jerk; the angler would pull back and set the hook; then pull in everything from mullet to flounder. Just about any fish was possible from that bridge.

Each time I fished at the bridge, there was a festive mood with all that were fishing. Entire families were there as well as the lone fishermen huddle over a cup of coffee late in the evening. Fishing rods were lined up like soldiers against the concrete railing. Everyone had his very own lawn chair, blankets or sleeping bag. Charcoal grills were set up and the aroma of hamburgers would be swept along by the ocean breeze from one end of the structure to the other. From time to time someone would come by selling bait or cold drinks. It was as if every night was a holiday! Frankly, I never caught many fish from that old bridge, but I had a lot of fun trying.

One particular evening in early July around midnight, we’d gotten bored with the lack of activity from our rods and reels, so we cut up one of the smaller fish into two pieces to be used for bait. We’d brought along two crab traps, so we baited them with the fish and lowered them over the side of the bridge until they touched bottom. Then we let nature take its course. It was time to catch some Blue Crabs for dinner the next evening!

A half hour later we pulled up one of the traps to see if we had any crabs. There wasn’t even one! There were however five large shrimp in the basket. We lost one when it fell out of the trap on the way up to the top of the bridge. We scooped the other four up and put them in our bait bucket for later use.

The second trap changed our minds about using the shrimp for bait when we pulled it up. We had an even dozen large shrimp in this basket. That settled it; we had to keep fishing for shrimp until we had enough for a meal! There were very few small shrimp in the baskets; most of them were large or jumbo; just the kind to cook on a charcoal grill!

The next couple of hauls were very poor, only one shrimp between the two baskets. We checked our bait and dropped the traps into the water about 15 feet below. While we were waiting for the shrimp to come to the traps, we continued to fish with our rods and reels. My son and I each caught a nice flounder. By the time we put them in the cooler; it was time to check the crab traps again.

This time there were about twenty each in our baskets. After seeing that we were catching shrimp, folks up and down the bridge had dug out their crab traps and were having good success also! I have no idea why the shrimp were so plentiful under that bridge that night. I’ve caught a lot of crabs there but that was the only time the shrimp were that plentiful. We lost a lot of shrimp due to them falling out of the basket as we hauled them up, but we finished the night with about 8 pounds of shrimp!

Folks have told me that the city is going to build another fishing structure to replace the old bridge in Pensacola. I hope they do, but it won’t be the same. I know you can’t live in the past but if I could, I would stake my claim on a spot about two hundred yards from the southern shore on that old bay bridge and throw out my traps.

“Don’t get use to big swings or chops, bear or bull trends. Expect anything, anytime.”

Yes, keep a clear, open mind every day you trade. Come into the new day with no biases or expectations. Your mind should be a clean slate. Otherwise you are peering through colored glasses based on old information. In addition, all of us have a tendency to expect what happened previously.

We love to fit the world into rigid, repeating patterns. That’s how the brain is wired. Expectations can put us in a rut if the e-mini futures market has been in a long, repetitive chop that we’ve been trading successfully. The first time the market breaks out and starts trending, many of us will keep bucking the trend and give back much of our profits. Be flexible and expect nothing at all.

There’s nothing like studying what’s happening right now to get an edge on the futures traders who trade “remotely.” By remotely I mean the day-traders who figure out their buy and sell pivot points the night before - where to enter and exit, etc. without regard to current action. They calculate e-mini retracements, support and resistance points from the past and then put in resting orders based on an end-of-day system. But I feel getting current, live and changing information “RIGHT NOW” can greatly enhance this EOD method. (end-of-day price data)

Observation:

“Once e-mini futures break above an important point, consider it strong and a buy on a test back down to this point. The market might take its time and make a double bottom to scare the sheep. But usually expect a fast turn-around spike and rally scenario. This is likely if the A-D line is neutral or slightly bullish. Sometimes a too-bullish A-D line with a big run-up is exhaustion and time for a turn. It’s the same thing for big negative A-D line openings with a gap. Look for a big rally after a series of e-mini bottoms and heavy futures contracts buying.”
‘Nuff said.

Observation:

“Use the line tool to check the A-D line histogram to see if A-D is improving while the price is lower than yesterday, etc. This is a non-confirmation.”

Since the general stock advance-decline line is an important trend indicator, you might as well use trend lines and other tools to look for confirmations and non-confirmations. An A-D line that has drastically changed from one day to the next is usually a major indication of a turning point lasting at least for the full trading day, and possibly longer. More S&P 500 and E-Mini Futures Contract Observations: PART4

"The following e-mini futures action turned into a big chop, then a big rally the next day: After a clean out decline, wait for a series of bottoms with big volume buying activity. Wait for the sell-off to a bottom and sharp rally and then the volume dies. This is the safest place to buy. This was the forth bottom and the previous three bottoms had bearish volume patterns. The forth bottom changed - it had bullish volume patterns and then price rallied to the close."

It pays to step back and view the e-mini futures market in context. My notes keep repeating it’s a mistake to buy the first panic spike. I’d gotten good at buying spikes and wondered why I always broke even or even lost doing it. Most of the time a huge e-mini futures climax is followed by several tries to test the bottom. It’s easy to get chewed up in these bottom tests since they can last for several hours before a big turn.

The single spike low that holds and supports a big move was popular in the 90’s, but it seems to have been replaced by a series of double, triple and quadruple bottoms. Throughout the bottoming area, you will see a bearish volume pattern until near the end where it turns bullish within the formation. It’s often profitable to stay bearish and continue to sell rallies and cover at the bottom area. In fact, EXPECT big bottoms to be tested.

If you are early buying a bottom, don’t let these tests fake you out. If you are positioning long, expect them and even average in some more as long as the bottom area reasonably holds. The e-mini market may even spike the original low by one-half to a full point, but any more usually means a major break down and you want to be gone.

Remember that “major” e-mini day-trading lows occur only every 3-5 days or longer, so be selective when positioning for them. Personally, I have found big turning point positioning to be a waste of time and money from a day-trading point of view. It often leads to overnight holds and a bad next-day gap surprise. It’s better to let the longer term futures traders beat themselves up and get the occasional rewards. Playing these large, range-bound formations from the short side until they finally end is the best advice.

When the e-mini futures market starts trending, use this larger frame of reference (the recent bottom) to pick up a bias in a certain direction. Then simply buy the dips and exit at the climaxes over and over. After identifying a big turnaround, don’t try to outsmart the market by shorting or reversing your position against the trend.

This is a difficult idea to adhere to, because the e-mini market will always be having minor corrections and try to fool you into believing it’s turned back down. But after the minor correction is done, the market will move to new highs in line with the accumulation that took place in the last couple days.
