You’re shopping in the grocery store and pick up box of cake mix, read the nutrition label see there is a big zero (0 ) next to trans fats (this you can read even without the aid of your reading glasses which are sitting home on the counter). You toss the mix into your shopping cart and continue shopping.

Later in the week, you want to surprise the kids with cake. Armed with reading glasses, you briefly look to confirm that indeed there are no trans fats. (Yep, there’s the big 0g in the trans fat column.) Now you peruse the ingredients before reading the preparation instructions and…lo and behold…the third ingredient in this cake mix is partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Wait a minute! That’s trans fat!

How could that be? How can the nutrition label display 0 trans fats and the list of ingredients clearly place trans fat as the third ingredient? According to the FDA, ingredients are listed in descending order of predominance according to weight. This is a major concern since partially hydrogenated soybean oil is listed third in the cake mix.

Well my friends, I feel your pain as this has happened to me. I was rather annoyed so I wrote to the cake mix manufacturer about the discrepancy. Their response stated “If the amount of trans fat is less than ½ % it would listed as zero.” (Ignore the obvious omission of the word ‘be’ - a direct quote is a direct quote). They included a coupon with a maximum value of $3.99 so that I may purchase more of their product.

Hmmm, I read the letter and thought again. ½ a percent? Hydrogenated fat is weighing in as the third ingredient? That doesn’t make sense. So, I sent another letter asking them to clear my confusion. Does the ½ percent rule apply to the whole cake or is it ½ percent of trans fat per serving (according to the nutrition label there are 12 servings per cake)?

Their response: “If the amount of trans fat is less than ½%, per serving, it would listed as zero” (interesting, same grammatical mistake as the earlier letter, oh well a direct quote nonetheless).

Do you or your children ever eat one twelfth of a piece of cake at one sitting? My teen aged son believes that a ’small’ piece of cake is approximately one quarter of the cake. Just how many grams of trans fats are contained in a quarter of a cake? We don’t know and the manufacturers are not telling us.

My advice:

Read nutrition labels and list of ingredients thoroughly
Zero grams of trans fats may not be zero grams of trans fats.
Keep an extra pair of reading glasses in your pocket or purse.

Finding the right grant is only the first step in the process. The second part is the killer and where most grant seekers fail.

Here are a few tips for writing your grant proposal:

1. You may understand your business or concept inside out - but the person reading your proposal doesn’t. Explain your idea clearly and in detail. Have at least two other people OUTSIDE of your organization read the proposal and then ask them questions about your concept. If they cannot explain what you are trying to do - chances are the grants committee won’t either. And they won’t fund what they can’t comprehend.

2. The proposal must flow smoothly from beginning to end. As a result, the proposal just doesn’t make sense. To avoid this situation, start with an outline that clearly follows each step of your plan…then expand each point as needed to fully explain your business plan. Then - give the finished proposal to someone outside the field of education to read before you submit it. This will help you to identify parts that needed to be clarified.

3. If you want your proposal to be taken seriously - show the funding committee that YOU take it seriously by carefully proofing it for spelling, typing and grammatical errors. Take time to have at least two people proofread your proposal before you submit it - and then read it again yourself to make sure!

4. Don’t estimate costs and funding needs for the proposal rather than taking the time to research and evaluate the actual expenses. In a grant proposal, guesses just won’t make it. If a grant reviewer suspects that your financial sheet is not accurate - you just lost the grant. Find out exactly what kind of computer system you are going to need and exactly what the cost will be, then spell it out in the proposal exactly!

5. Make sure that your goals and objectives are clearly laid out and specific. If you say “I want this grant so that I can help the community” you won’t get nearly the credibility as you would by saying “This grant will allow us to buy 2 new computers, and create 2 part-time paid staff positions in an area where jobs for high school students are very difficult to find.”

6. Give yourself enough time! Don’t throw the proposal together in order to meet the deadline…. it shows. A good proposal package takes time to assemble and research properly. If you really want the money - then spend the time to put it together correctly, without shortcuts.

7. Every grant has rules and directions that must be followed EXACTLY! If you want your proposal to be read and considered, read and re-read the directions. If it says that the grant MUST be submitted via the online form - don’t even bother to ask if you can fax it in. Unlike employment applications where it sometimes pays to be “original”, grant committees have rules in place for a specific reason, and they expect them to be followed to the letter. To do otherwise may mean that your application will be disqualified before it ever gets read.

8. Make sure that your proposal is what the funder actually finds! Don’t assume that just because there is a significant amount of money available, that they will fund just anything - the truth is that funders are often VERY specific in what they are looking for (and sometimes a bit odd, but that’s their choice!) and will rarely deviate from their “category”. You may have the very best purple widget in the world - but if the grant is only for the producers of RED WIDGETS - you won’t get the grant!

Grants are hard to find and competitive - so put together the very best proposal possible and prove that you are the one that should get the money!

The critical time has arrived for General Motor’s struggling Buick brand. With its boring image and years of declining market share, the automaker is working hard to pump up some life into its depreciating brand.

In the coming months Buick plans to enhance its two sedans and launch a much anticipated crossover sport utility vehicle. According to General Manager Steve Shannon, Buick can’t afford to allow those efforts to fail stating that this year is a defining time in the brand’s revival effort. “2007 is going to be the breakout year for Buick. The business is tough; we’re fighting it out everyday,” Shannon said in an interview with the Automotive Press Association luncheon.

Buick is searching for that something that would help it to revive sales in North America where sales have fallen more than 40 percent since the year 2002. Despite the fact that it has flourished in the hot Chinese market, where GM was able to sell more Buick than it did in North America still the brand struggled in United States. Two years ago GM product czar Bob Lutz has described Buick as a “damaged brand” and added that GM would scrap it off their product range if things with the brand don’t improve. Fortunately, Buick auto components which its parent company GM supplies like GM wheel hubs will continuously be produced so Buick car owners need not worry.

Shannon also announced that Buick plans for the coming months to revive the Super car designation used on high performance models of the 1950s. The brand also plans to enhance the Lucerne and LaCrosse later this year.

Buick’s most promising vehicle, the Enclave crossover SUV is scheduled to hit showrooms this summer with Tiger Woods to star in the ads. And next month, GM will launch its 2008 LaCrosse at the New York Auto Show.

Saving Buick is a tough undertaking and some are questioning whether GM’s strategy will actually work to save its struggling brand. GM will employ a different approach with Buick than it did with Saturn, a brand bolstered by an all-out product assault in the past 18 months. GM was able to add five vehicles to the Saturn lineup, even if it means shipping a compact car to the United States from Belgium just to better compete in that market.

With regards to Buick, General Motors is continuously thinning down the brand’s model lineup which will soon be dropped to only three vehicles-the LaCrosse, the Enclave, and the Lucerne. GM has earlier scrap production of the Rendezvous sport utility vehicle last December and plans to stop also the production of the Terraza minivan and Rainier midsize sport utility vehicle by early summer.

Last year Buick was able to sell about 96,000 Lucernes and 71,000 LaCrosses both sales increased slightly from 2005. The Buick dealer network is also being consolidated. GM is also planning of consolidating Buick, GMC, and Pontiac dealers into one outlet that would sell all three brands.

According to Karl Bauer, editor in chief of Edmunds.com an online auto shopping site, “Even though Buick needs as much or more attention as Saturn, its not getting a full-fledged revival. Its tough battle and there is a lot of baggage there.” Bauer also added that the Enclave has potential may not be able to go far to actually change the image of the Buick brand.

Last Tuesday General Motors has conducted a Buick presentation in which one of the audiences is Tom Libby, senior director of industry analysis at J.D. Power and Associates, he came away with the impression that GM has not fully focused on creating a well crafted strategy for Buick.

During the presentation Hannon discussed about attracting wealthy buyers while at the same time keeping the Buick loyalists. The brand also aimed in attracting younger urban crowd.
