I thought I understood. But then the veil of what I thought I understood was lifted and I came to know the profound truth. I knew very little about hardly anything.

Shall I explain?

I think I became concussed for a decade, walking around in a fog that began when I fell, headfirst, from fourteen feet.

It’s fair to say that on that day, it wasn’t just my skull that got smashed. My whole life shattered. It was then that I entered the time warp - a period where I thought I understood things, but clearly didn’t.

Following the tragedy I thought I’d been reborn. In a sense I guess I had. The illusions of my life shattered and I realised that: marriage didn’t always last forever, accidents do happen, death could arrive at any moment and some people find honesty difficult.

You could say, I woke up. But then I might say, ‘Yes, but only to a new sleep’.

The reason I might say this is that my thoughts were building new references to a new reality where I thought I had all the answers. Meantime my nervous system was rewiring and endeavouring to dull down my already hurt feelings.

In my new reality I had doubts. I had fears. I had trust issues. I often couldn’t be bothered. I listened to music at full volume. I watched too much TV - even programmes that didn’t entertain me. Sometimes the stereo and the TV would be on together. I drank too much on occasions and overate.

And for a time, all the noise and stuff in my life took over.

But then this veil - this decade of concussion lifted and I could see the benefits of this whole experience. I could see how I’d been born into an illusion where security and permanence of structure and stability existed.

Beyond that I could then see how disillusion of fear and failure and insecurity.

Having seen both sides of my opposite I came to the conclusion that all I needed to do now, was decide what I liked best and create a new illusion.

It’s hard to see through the noise and stuff and it can be hard to decide what you want your idea of life, your illusion to be about, especially when life turned tough.

When things go wrong, it’s hard to not blame, either yourself or others. It’s often impossible to see the blessing in times of hardship. We can, and do, beat ourselves up. Make ourselves feel less.

But I, and I hope you, will see when you look back at the time warp of your life, that a very special person passed through the adventure of our life and had some pretty awesome experiences.

When we take the time to identify with that passing person and see them as us and understand what’s been happening we can begin to understand what’s unfolded in our life. When we know that we will understand how to straighten out any kinks.

Sometimes situations begin, as mine did, with an accident. That accident could be looked at as a curse or a blessing. When you look at it as a curse, the future clouds over. When you look at it as a blessing, the canvas is clean and the future is hopeful.

Recently I was working with someone who told me how his life was a mess. Yet following the events of his life, I could see clearly it wasn’t. It was a tapestry of amazing events, all orchestrated to guide him. Yet he’d been missing the guidance and was therefore in pain.

When I unravelled the mystery he’d been living, I saw him relax and put his hand on his chin. He wagged his finger at me, but couldn’t find words. And then he smiled and I knew he had, at last seen through his mist.

From that moment on he was enabled to recreate his illusion, to begin to make of life whatever he wanted.

Understanding and hope is what he took away from our session. His life had unfolded. His future begun.

Mowing lawn is perhaps one of the most important aspects of lawn care. Proper mowing will keep your lawn healthy and green.

When you mow, you are actually clipping off the growing point of the grasses. This is the part where new leaves develop. When this happen, the grasses will branch out and fight for every available space to grow. This will eventually lead to a dense, tightly woven turf.

Mowing is a lawn care process that needs proper knowledge to accomplish. It is not just about cutting off the extra height of the grass.

First you need to understand what type of grass you have in your lawn. In general, there are two types of grasses used for establishing lawn. One is warm season grass and the other is cool season grass. As their names implied, each type of grass prospers under different climate condition.

Each grass type has a specific height that is the optimum for it to be mowed. If you mow that type of grass to the specific height, it would grow healthily and look better. In addition, mowing at the correct height also means that the grass has sufficient leave left for it to absorb water and nutrients. Many lawn care experts believe that the depth of the root system of the lawn grass is directly proportional to the height of mowing. This means that the higher you mow your lawn, the deeper would be the root system of your lawn grass. It also translates into getting more water for your grass and making less effort in watering your lawn.

For cool season grasses such as Fescue, Bluegrass and Ryegrass. they should be mowed at a range of two and a half to three and a half inches of height. Fescue is generally mowed to about three inches in height while Bluegrass should not mowed at less than two and a half inches in height.

For warm season grasses, they can be mowed at a low height as provided by most of the home owned mowers. Some examples of warm season grass include Bermuda, Zoysia and Centipede. If you planning to mow these grasses in your lawn, you can try to mow them at about one inch. You should have a smooth grade or else it would not look good.

Lawn mowing helps in keeping the grass alive and makes roots grow deeper. Mowing lawns at a proper height also makes it look better. One of the biggest advantages of mowing lawns is that it saves water and this in turn will save your money and time that could have been spent in watering your lawn.

Did it begin with the Buffalo Soldiers, a turn-of-the-century infantry who customized bicycles to carry gear over rough terrain? It was August 1896, the riders, black enlisted men and a white lieutenant, rode from Missoula, Montana, to Yellowstone and back, an arduous 800 miles. Their mission: to test the bicycle for military use in mountainous terrain.

Or was it the Velo Cross Club Parisian (VCCP) of France? Comprised of about 20 young bicyclists from the outskirts of Paris, who between 1951 and 1956, they developed a sport that was remarkably akin to present-day mountain biking. These riders juiced up their French 650-B bikes with an extraordinary degree of technical sophistication.

Maybe it was John Finley Scott who was probably the first mountain bike enthusiast in the United States. In 1953 he built what he called a “Woodsie Bike”, using a Schwinn World diamond frame, balloon tires, flat handlebars, derailleur gears, and cantilever brakes. John was more than twenty years ahead of his time, and while he remained an off-road cycling enthusiast, at the time there were not many others who shared his passion.

We believed that the inception of mountain biking needed to be a continuous series of events that connected with one another as opposed to an isolated incident. Another example, in the early 1970s there were a band of cyclists - The Cupertino Riders, AKA - the Morrow Dirt Club, from Cupertino California, 75 miles south of Marin, who were modifying their bikes. They were grafting thumb-shift-operated derailleurs and motorcycle lever-operated drum brakes to their klunkers to help them get up and down the south bay hills. They competed against some future hall-of-famers at a Marin County Cylcecross race in late 1974, where their technology was noticed. Then they disappeared.

We believe that the continuous history of the mountain bike is most evident in Northern California. There are a few areas that will claim to be the first mountain bike community, but every history book will lead you to Marin County. The origins of mountain biking were totally innocent. It came into being not as some faddist vision of profit-oriented marketing types, but rather as the product of true cycling enthusiasts trying to find something new to do on two wheels. These cyclists found through fun and competition that the old one-speed klunkers they were using could be improved with modern cycling technology. One thing led to another and mountain biking - “the sport” - was born.
