I’ve spent the past fortnight constructing a shed in my back garden. Not just a flat-pack - a slightly mad build-it-from-scratch-from-bits-of-wood version. I can hear you asking already what that has to do with business. Quite simply, in the process of building the shed, I realized how similar it was to building a business. Wait, and I’ll explain more.

Metaphorically speaking, building a shed is very similar to building a business. There are many ingredients that you need, and missing any one of them out will mean the results will range from achieving nothing to the disastrous. But one ingredient stands head and shoulders above the rest.

It’s a simple four letter word…

… P-L-A-N.

With the benefit of a clear plan that’s focused on reaching your goal, and the right amount of experience and knowledge, you’ll know exactly what tools and materials you’ll need. With the right amount of focus, along with persistence and sheer hard work, you simply follow the plan - and you’re far more likely to achieve the end result you are looking for.

Let’s go back to the example of building a shed, and examine what might happen if you had no plan, or just say a quick sketch on a scrap of paper to rely on:

- You would struggle to know what materials you needed, and have to make repeated trips to the hardware store, greatly reducing the efficient use of your time and needlessly wasting your energy.

- When you start to build, the various parts will likely not fit together properly. As a result, you will either have to start again, or carry on, trying to patch it up as you go along. Naturally, it can be demoralizing - you may even lose confidence completely, and just give up.

- If you manage to continue, the end result is likely to look shoddy, unprofessional, and cheap - and it will be a lasting, and embarrassing reminder of your approach.

But such a result is so easy - really, it is *so* easy - to avoid.

If you spend your time more efficiently before you even start, and develop a clear plan that you feel confident in, let us see what happens:

- You can work out exactly what materials you need, and make a trip or two to the hardware store to get them.

- You can follow the plan to build the shed, and fit the various parts together to achieve a solid construction that is both fit for purpose and aesthetically-appealing.

- The end result will look professional, and one you can feel proud of.

And you know what, it will also do wonders for your confidence and self-esteem - you will be planning bigger and better sheds in your sleep that before you wouldn’t have even dreamed of attempting. Yes, I am metaphorically referring back to business, so let’s get straight, and see exactly how this applies to your business.

Without a plan, your results will be unintended by definition. You are instead holding out for a lucky break, for good fortune to come your way - you’re relying on a simple throw of the dice.

If you plan, you are planning to achieve a specific result - and your results are much more likely to be as intended, or at least, some way towards them. Of course, you can never predict exactly what will happen, but reach for the stars and you may at least hit the moon! And the experience you gain along the way is one of the most important assets for your business.

The first time I developed a plan for my business, and followed it through, my business doubled in a few short months. Developing a plan meant I had to define a target, and then define a plan to achieve it.

A plan gave me both focus and clarity - I knew what I wanted to achieve and how to achieve it. It encouraged me to ignore distractions, and remain focused on the plan - if I stayed on track with the plan, I could achieve the result I wanted.

In fact, I believe it is the single most important ingredient of all. With a plan, you know what else you need, like the following:

1. The correct tools and materials - what will you need to use to reach your goal?

2. The right experience and know-how - even if you don’t have it, it’s not difficult to find someone else who does, and learn! For example, there are countless successful Internet marketers for example who can barely construct a web page.

So what should you do now? Quite simply, define a target you want to reach, formulate a plan to reach it, and follow it until you reach your goal!

Green grass. Trees and shrubs. Flowers. That’s what the typical landscaped lawn consists of. And properly designed, such landscapes can be quite pretty, of course. But there’s many different ways to landscape your yard - and you should consider them all before making your final decision. Let your imagination run riot.

Why not try a rock garden?
If there’s a section of your grounds where the grass just won’t grow, why not replace it with a rock garden? Of course, you don’t want to place such a garden in an area which gets a lot of water run-off. If that’s the reason why your grass won’t grow, consider fixing the drainage! But if it’s a question of bad soil, or of too much shade in the area, a rock garden is the perfect solution.

Once you create a rock garden there will be little or no maintenance for it. But that’s contingent on you building the rock garden correctly to begin with. The last thing you want is for the rocks to shift during a rainstorm, or for grasses to constantly crop up through the gaps in the stone and have to be weeded away.

There’s a dearth of sources on the web for rock garden design, but there are plenty of books on the subject, from Rock Garden Design and Construction by the North American Rock Garden Society , to Stonescaping: A Guide to Using Stone in Your Garden by Jan Kowalczewski Whitner, from Stonework: Building Rock Gardens, Walks, Walls, and Ornaments by Alan Bridgewater and Gill to The Rock & Water Garden Expert by D.G. Hessayon.

Apart from a rock garden - not to be concerned with a Japanese garden - there are plenty of other ways to use decorative stone to enhance your landscaping.

Warm, welcoming stone
A concrete sidewalk up to your front door is so prosaic! Why not change it into a rock pathway? And add a rock pathway leading to the back of the house as well. For those types of designs you’ll have to check the building codes in your area - many housing developments restrict the kinds of things you can do to your own yard.

As with a rock garden, the ground needs to be properly prepared first, so that water will run-off properly during even the most ferocious downpours, and the rocks themselves don’t tilt or slide when walked on…or settle and heave during a winter frost. Always consult a professional if you’re going to be working with slabs of stone or rock in an area that gets a great deal of cold weather.

Properly designed and executed, a rock garden can bring you joy for years to come.

I was running one of my series of workshops on “Fearless Sexuality and Sexual Charisma” when one of the participants asked me if having more sex makes a person sexier?

This sexual myth has been doing the rounds quite a bit lately and I’ve not yet come across studies and research that conclusively shows that having more sex actually makes people feell sexier.

From my own experience, there was a time when my relationship life was so messed up that I decided I needed time-out to try and figure out why I was running away from serious relationships and commitments. I was so messed up that for 5 years I did not have any sex at all - not even solo-sex.

I noticed I was feeling sexier than I ever felt in my whole life. Given the sex-positive environment I was raised in, “sexier” means I was oozing it from every pore of my skin in large amounts. I did not have to say or do anything - all I had to do was walk into a room and cause chaos. Married women would grab their husbands by the arm and single guys literally begged for me to say their names out aloud. Even women were hitting on me left and right. One time I went to a friend’s house and his dog was all over me, he said he’d never seen his dog that “excited”. The dog had to put in its kennel.

I told my ritual mother what was happening and she told me that although I wasn’t having sex with another human being, I was “making love to the whole universe.” I was in a state where I was sexy because I was flowing with what nature intended for me to be - a full sexual being.

Until I have full proof that “having sex” actually makes you feel sexier - well documented research with facts, not the one which asks people who’ve just had sex if they feel sexier after bonking each other silly - I believe that “knowing” that you can have sex with just about anyone you chose, when you want and how you want it actually makes you feel sexier. Knowing you have that much “power” and “control” over your sexual life makes you feel as sexy as sexy can be.

Though I’d rather have sex (with my guy) than eat food, I also believe that feeling sexy has nothing to do with things we do to get into the “mood of sex” or cause others to be in that mood. Being sexy is who you are whether you are engaged in a sexual activity or not. It’s something that is completely unconscious, natural and effortless. And it’s not something you can switch on and off (be sexy this time and in this place, and not be sexy another time in another place).

As someone coming from a whole different culture I see that here in North America, there is so much struggle with sexual expression (acting sexy, looking sexy, talking sexy, walking sexy, wearing this or that to feel sexy etc) and so much self doubt and plain old feeling “dirty” and guilty. Most people are pre-occupied with “doing” rather than “just-being”. Even people who say they teach others to just “live in the moment” end up prescribing things for people to “do” in order to just live in the moment. Very few of them actually know what “just being” really means.

Having more sex in order to feel sexier is just another “doing” instead of “being.” When you are operating from your fullness as a sexual person sexy is WHO you are - AND YOU DON’T KNOW ANY OTHER WAY TO BE.

When you play with life or make love to the universe, you release your sexual energy and let it work for you instead of you struggling to do what sexual energy can do best - effortlessly and naturally. But much more than that, its non-stop ecstasy. You wake up every day looking forward to living it to it’s fullest! That energy is sexier than anything you’ll ever say or do!

When you consider your landscape, you’ll find that shrubs are one of the most versatile elements that you can employ. Shrubs can serve as a background for your flower or vegetable garden, as dividers between different areas of the yard, and even as privacy screens (otherwise known as hedges).

Shrubs come in a wide variety - over a hundred different genuses, with a variety of species within each genus: There are shrubs with brilliant flowers, or evergreen shrubs for all seasons.

What exactly are shrubs? According to the dictionary definition: “A woody plant of relatively low height, having several stems arising from the base and lacking a single trunk; a bush.” A rose bush is a shrub, for example, but so is a flowering dogwood. Have you heard that a dogwood is a tree? Well, some dogwoods are shrubs, and some are trees! Just as some lilacs are shrubs and some are trees. It all depends on how tall the individual species within the genus grows.

So there’s quite a bit to learn about shrubbery before you decide on which ones you’ll use in your landscaping endeavors. It’s always best to consult with your local gardening experts while you’re working on your design.

But even though you’ll want to talk to local gardeners about what would be best for your landscaping plans, you don’t need to deal locally to acquire the shrubs. (Although it’s always nice to support local businesses.) And you will find that there are restrictions - some states do not allow you to import certain plants - Hawaii and Alaska are simply too far away.

But take a jaunt around the web to see what’s out there.

For example Direct Gardening offers everything from bulbs to fruits and nuts to hedges to shrubs to vines and water plants. Their website has plenty of photos of all their offerings so you can see what everything looks like. (They also sell what they call “Pre-planned gardens” - a mixture of several different but complimentary plants that will all grow well in the same type of conditions.)

Nature Hills Nursery is another online business that offers a wide variety of starter plants. And their website has a feature in which you input your zipcode, and it comes back with the “zone” in which you live - and the flowers, plants, shrubs and trees that grow best in that zone.

Pruning
The major maintenance for shrubs is pruning - you simply must prune your shrubs, not only to improve their appearance but also to help them grow healthy and strong. Hedge clippers and hand pruners are must have tools, loppers and a small pruning saw will also come in handy.

The late Ron Zemky talked about how customer decisions are based on two dimensions - outcomes and process.

Outcomes are about “did the product or service meet your outcome expectations?” That is, did it work? Did it do what it was supposed to?

Process is about “how were you made to feel as a customer?”

Ron argued that to get ultimate customer loyalty required the outcome to exceed expectations and for customers to feel delighted with the process. Ron suggested that this combination would produce advocates. I prefer to say that this produces customers falling in love with the business.

Recently, I have been travelling around the UK and have stayed in a wide variety of hotels. Some of theme were BIG well know names. And some were little tiny hotels that you have probably never heard of. As I tell the stories, please just think about outcome and process in each case and how this could apply to your business.

One of the first was a big hotel in Portsmouth.

After struggling up to the fourth floor I discover that my electronic room key doesn’t work. I don’t want to take the risk of leaving my bags unattended outside the room and so I trudge back to reception for another key.

My meal takes more than an hour to arrive. But when it does arrive the waiter apologises and informs me that the meal will be free of charge under their prompt service guarantee.

The internet is not working. I phone reception. They give me another number to call that doesn’t work.

Next morning I am charged for my meal, for two beers that I didn’t have and for phone calls that I made trying to report their internet problems.

In defence of the hotel, I must say that the meal was very good, there were 5! pillows on my very comfortable bed and the gym was excellent.

But the question is, did I fall in love?

The next hotel was a big one in Southampton.

I arrive at 3.40 pm and check in. My room is very spacious and comfortable.

I am due to be speaking at 5.00 pm so I figure that I’ve got just enough time for a refreshing nap before I shower and get ready.

Just as I doze off, there is a really terrible noise. Somebody is drilling into the ceiling of my room with a pneumatic drill.

I dash to the corridor to see a team of workmen working on the lifts.

I phone reception and have to shout to overcome the noise of drilling. They promise to phone me back.

Two minutes later they call me back to say that the engineers are carrying out some maintenance and the drilling will take another 30-40 minutes.

I end up delivering my presentation at 5.00 pm feeling rather the worse for wear and my ears are still ringing from the noise of the drill.

Product? Process?

Just ask yourself a couple of questions. What do lift engineers know about drilling? Who do hotel people know is likely to be affected by drilling?

How would you have managed this situation better?

My next hotel is called Yesterdays in Newtown, Powys.

This little hotel is located in the beautiful upper Severn Valley and is run by Moyra and Jim.

Now there was a little bit of confusion when I arrived. Moyra had my booking in the name of the agent that had made my reservation. And she was a little worried that she might not have a room for me. But we soon overcame this confusion. And Moyra took me to my room.

One of the first things that I noticed was a little sign on the desk informing me that I could access the wireless internet completely free of charge. I thanked Moyra for providing this. After all, the BIG hotels had been charging 10 and more per night for internet access. “Oh, that’s okay,” explained Moyra. “I needed it for myself and so it doesn’t cost any more to provide it for my guests”.

After Moyra had left, I started to notice some other things in my room.

The extra blankets. Nice bath robes. Extra towels. Cotton wool pads. Shower gel. Cotton wool buds. Toothbrushes. Shaving cream. A razor. Soap. A shower cap. Shampoo. Emery boards. A vanity kit. Proper shower instructions. Proper internet instructions. A map and recommended restaurants etc. A pen. Tea and tea pot. Coffee. Drinking chocolate. Sugar bowl. Biscuits. Tray. Kettle. Tissues. Radio alarm. Iron and ironing board. Calendar. Torch. Desk. Notepaper. TV. Fan heater. Hair dryer. Sewing kit. Shoe shine. Scissors. Hot water bottle.

The service from Jim and Moyra was fabulous. And next morning, after a great night’s sleep, Jim even apologised that one of my egg yolks had split in the frying pan and asked if I would like him to cook me a fresh egg.

Process?

Love?

Where will I aim for next time I’m close to Powys?

Many people like to impress the women with the talent they have got.
Well, that sounds good but it should not sound like you are boasting.
It should be just natural.

You need to adopt other skills to show your talent.
Apart from the dating activities, these tricks are so great that it will help you in every walk of your life.
So the rule is, never ever boast of your talent in front of others.

Every single person on this planet is not dumb. Everyone knows that, if somebody is trying to flaunt his talent, he can be weak at that point.

For example, if a guy constantly brags about how many girls he sleeps with, there are high chances that he is virgin.

So the basic rule is, do not keep boasting of your talent. People may think that you are telling a lie.

The second rule is, when you do not show off, don’t project yourself as weak also.
Use a mixture of the words that proves you are a cool guy that does not raise a guard.

The third rule is, prepare yourself and learn how to show your talent.
Obviously, you should not talk about it. You need to learn how to stress the things. At the end of the conversation, other will feel that you have got some substance. And that’s perfect.

It has to come that way, quite natural. You are so powerful that you actually do not have to talk about your talent.
It works and it does magic sometimes. So always keep the above rules in mind when you have to talk about how cool you are.

We live in a computer age. Practically every household has a computer, and every big town has a computer store where one can go to stock up on software or all kinds of games. There’s software for everything from learning a foreign language to correlating your recipes… to designing your landscape.

The traditional way to design a new landscape is to sketch out a scale model of your front or back yard on a sheet of graph paper, with each block equivalent to a certain number of feet, depending on the size of your yard. Over this grid you place sheets of tracing paper, on which you play around with the different kinds of features you’d like to see in your landscape, and where they’d best fit.

You can now do the same thing with a computer program - only with the software you’ll be able to see things in 3-D which will aid greatly in the visualization of your finished design.

Of course even if you use landscape software - there is still information that you need to research on your own, which you’ll have to input into the program, in order to use the software effectively. You’ll have to have exact measurements of the width and length of your yard. You must know the pH balance of the soil, and the soil composition - sand, clay, etc. You must know where it slopes and where it’s level - which effects water runoff.

There are only a few landscaping programs on the market - you’ll want to do a little research on each to find if one suits your needs.

Competing programs include the Better Homes and Gardens Landscaping and Deck Designer, Instant Landscaping, and Your Complete Landscape and Garden Designer.

If you decide to purchase a landscaping program, of course do the common sense things of making sure you have the right operating system and enough memory to run the program. Make sure the company offers technical support. Surf the web to get an idea of any feedback or complaints on any of the software before you buy it.

Features to look for:

Landscaping templates - the more the better.
A library of more than 4,000 components for your project ideas - try to get software designed for your particular area - so t hat it’s library will contain plants you’re likely to use.
A feature helps you seek for plants based on drought tolerance, climate deer, resistance, etc.
Ability to design and visualize your areas in 3D.

The drawback to landscaping software is that it can be difficult to use if you are not computer savvy. But if you’re not averse to reading manuals, this software can make your landscape designing even more enjoyable.
