How Can They Tell You’re Different?

"Are you enjoying your holidays here?" The waitress at the Park Cafe in Villach is very friendly as she serves the fabulously rich cake and strong coffee we ordered - with a glass of water by the way, which is typical for Austria.

People often address us as visitors, even when we’re not - or maybe they are right and we are tourists everywhere, except the place we grow up in. We lived in Cape Town for nine years until recently, and settle here in Austria’s Carinthia now - but we are German.

How can they tell you’re different?

‘When in Rome, do like the Romans do.’ I found that to be good advice in the past whenever I travelled to places I hadn’t been to before. Trying to blend in at airport customs in Jakarta is what you did when you arrived in Indonesia via Singapore from South Africa on a second, clean passport during the Apartheid years.

But does it work? Did the locals think I was born in Venezuela when I was in Caracas? I am sure I didn’t pass for a local in Cape Town’s Kayelitsha township, but a few kilometers away in Simon’s Town nobody gave me a second glance walking down our Waterfront.

Fact is that we’re all different, of course - six and a half billion unique human beings on this planet, our fingerprints prove it; and it’s not important how far apart we are geographically - what matters is how close we are culturally. There’s a difference, although there is a proportional relation.

If I start yodelling in the middle of Hamburg, passers-by will stop and stare. In a small village in North Korea I would get arrested and put in an asylum for that, but anywhere in Austria, folks would smile and join in. Well, the way I yodel some of them might think I am dying and call an ambulance, but that’s not the point.

The point is that others can tell very quickly that you’re different first by the way you look, and then by the way you speak. Or write?

That’s what I am trying to find out from you today : can you tell that I am German from the way I am writing this article? I publish COMPASS for subscribers on four continents (Asia doesn’t seem to be interested much) and I consciously try to choose a neutral style here.

Working in Public Relations, on other occasions I would use a different approach for a particular purpose. When I lived in London in 1979/80 I sometimes played a little game with myself at parties : how long could I hide the fact that I am German by putting on as much of a British drawl as I could muster?

After a while, the best score I achieved was just under one hour if I remember correctly - and it was either because of, or in spite of all that really good French red wine they offered there.

Now here in Austria, I spoke to a gathering of Germans and Austrians last week and all of them, without exception, were amazed that I hadn’t lost my northern German accent after 22 years in South Africa.

That’s how the waitress in the Park Cafe could tell we weren’t Austrian, so we had to be tourists : not everyone wears Lederhosen here so we didn’t look different, but I am not one to keep my mouth shut for long.

We spoke differently. Do I write differently? Please drop me a brief comment and tell me what gives me away - or doesn’t.

This is incredibly entertaining; the talent show and the television industry bring together many people with wonderful results.

American Idol a concept
American Idol is an annual American televised singing competition that started on June 11, 2002. The concept was taken from the UK reality program Pop Idol. American Idol is a part of the Idol franchise. The objective of the program is to seek out and to discover the best young singer in the country. The talented singers are scrutinized through a series of examinations and make it to the final rounds of the competition via the approval of a panel of judges. The nationwide auditions are also a part of the judgment as verdict. The latter stages of this competition are wholly determined by public voting.

The American Idol competition show has three great judges who frequently critique the contestants’ performances in order to facilitate the voting. Randy Jackson -the record producer and bass player; Paula Abdul -a former pop star; and Simon Cowell -a UK producer and manager are the three judges of American Idol. Ryan Seacrest is the current host of the competition show.

Popularity
American Idol has been telecast on the Fox Network in the United States, on Fox Network and CTV in Canada and ITV 2 in the United Kingdom. The Idol series was first created by Simon Fuller, manager of the Spice Girls and S Club 7 and developed by Simon Jones of Thames Television. The directors of the show are Bruce Gowers (director of Queen’s original “Bohemian Rhapsody” video), Nigel Lythgoe (a judge on So You Think You Can Dance), Simon Fuller (creator) and Ken Warwick (Gladiators and Grudge Match). Apart from American cities, American Idol has been broadcast to over 100 nations outside of the United States.

Creating a Conducive Atmosphere for Development

What is an Atmosphere?

A particular environment or surrounding influence, for example there is an atmosphere of excitement or an atmosphere of doubt.

The weather or climate at some place; “the atmosphere was thick with fog”

A distinctive but intangible quality surrounding a person or thing, “an air of mystery”, “an atmosphere of defeat”, or “the place had an aura of romance”

What is Development?

Event causing change: An incident that causes a situation to change or progress from one level to another.

Process of change: The process of changing and becoming larger, stronger, or more impressive, successful, or advanced, or of causing somebody or something to change in this way.

Development is an act of improving by expanding or enlarging or refining. A process in which something passes by degrees to a different stage (especially a more advanced or mature stage). It is natural progression from a previous, simpler, or embryonic stage to a later more complex or adult stage.

It is imperative that you discover how to create an atmosphere conducive for development because without it you will not maximize your God given abilities and live the extraordinary life you were meant to live. The propensity to develop is built within every man by default, however for that to occur the atmosphere must be conducive. For instance, a grain of seed has the innate capacity to grow and develop to fruition but all its potential and capabilities will be of no effect if the atmosphere is not conducive. It is my humble conclusion that the will and desire of God for you is to develop, maximize your potential and fulfill your destiny. Fulfilling your purpose and destiny in life necessitate that you develop and grow spiritually, mentally and physically.

1 Peter 2:2 declares that “as new born babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby”. In Hebrews 5:14 Paul lets us understand that “But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil”.

The Greek word for Exercise is Gegymnasmena, which indicates how an athlete exercises or trains his body. That means we need to exercise our senses (mental capabilities) to develop by reason of use.

In first Timothy 4:8 the scripture declares that, “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come”. If you notice, it did not say that bodily exercise does not profit at all but a little. We do certainly need the little profit that bodily exercise provides as we aspire to develop spiritually, mentally and physically.

In other to cultivate an atmosphere for consistent development and growth you must apply yourself to the following elements:

- The Word of God - 2 Timothy 2:15
- Prayer, Praise and Worship - Philippians 4:6
- Quietness - 1 Peter 3:4; 1 Thessalonian 4:11
- Separation - Proverbs 18:1
- Keeping wise relationships - Proverbs 13:20
- Meditation - Philippians 4:4-9
- Bodily Exercise - 1 Timothy 4:8
- Habitual reading - 1 Tim. 4:13

Why Go to Church? Is it Love or Fear?

People go to church for one of two reasons:

A - Out of fear of what God will do to them if they don’t

B - Out of love and respect for God

While my personal reason for attending is B, my experience with other churchgoers has been that more of them seem to be there for A. Although they may not publicly admit it. Probably out of fear of what would happen.

This difference finally explains to me why, although I have a huge desire to learn more about God and how he does things, I seldom play well with other church people. We simply have a fundamental difference in how we approach the issue. Now that I understand this difference in motivation, I think I can better understand the actions of my fellow church members.

This difference also explains why most church marketing messages are so ineffective. They send a mixed message. Mixed messages are always diluted.

While to me, the teachings of Christ are all about love and caring, the majority of my fellow church members seem focused on the fear of dying and going to hell. Apparently the writers of the translation of the bible that translated the phrase about loving god as “Fear God” had this mind set.

Of course King James himself was much more interested in the power that translating the Bible in to English would give him (a fear based motivation) than he was in spreading the love of God throughout the world. Otherwise he would not have required the Scottish people to use the English Bible that they could not read. He would have allowed them to translate the Bible into Scottish if he really was motivated by love instead of power (or fear).

As I travel around the country, I like to read the message boards in front of churches and see what benefits they offer as to why I should come there. While I occasionally see one that is motivating, I see a lot more shoulds being addressed than wants or desires.

The shoulds are not particularly motivating to me. Having made a conscious decision to focus on love rather than fear in my life, I look for ways to help people and to find more love and acceptance for myself. I am motivated by a true desire to help others than fear of not doing what I “should.”

After all, I can find plenty of guilt and shame in my life without going to church. I am looking for love and freedom from sin - like Jesus promised when he said; “I come not to condemn the world but to save it.”

What continues to confuse me however is how people who are supposed to be aligned with the greatest teacher of love ever to walk the earth - Jesus, would have such a prevalence of fear. But I must continue to tell myself that it is just the writing on their internal walls that leads them to the path they have chosen.

Maybe this internal writing comes from the history of the church. For centuries, religious leaders have wielded great power. In many communities, they still do. However, power is a fear-based motivation. If you are afraid of something, then the ultimate way to over come this fear is to have power over it. This idea more fully explained in Steve Pavlina’s article series on Fear vs. Love motivation that inspired this article.

Throughout history, the church has been very powerful - even more powerful than kings and other political leaders - when it was totally focused on fear rather than spreading God’s love. I am sure that is why the powerful church leaders resisted allowing the common people to read he Bible. They knew that if the message of love was allowed to dilute their message of fear, then they would loose power.

Today the church seems to have lost some of its political power and appears to be attacked from all sides. Maybe this is a good thing, as it will force the church to reassess why it is here. Why would people want to be a part of the Church of Jesus?

Let’s look for example at a typical fund raising mission for a church. What motivations do they give for their members to give? Do they focus on what a great opportunity they have to spread love with their giving or do they try to convince people that they should give to avoid feeling guilty. Giving is commanded of God and you will be sent to Hell if you don’t give. Do they use the word “sacrifice” or “investment?”

Also, where is the primary reward for being a servant of God? Is it here and now as Jesus taught when he prayed “Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven?” Or are we supposed to delay gratification all our lives so that if we follow all the rules just right and have been lucky enough to align ourselves with the right teacher, we have a shot at some eternal reward after we are dead?

Just shoot me now and let me get on with that future reward! I am sure there will be some volunteers for that.

Actually I prefer to enjoy living in the grace and love of Jesus’ teaching right here right now. If there is an even better place to go after I die, I am looking forward to that as well. But for now, I prefer to live each day in the fullness of God’s blessing.

While I still have fears to face, I am finding more and more tools to work on these fears. Sadly, I have not found them through my church. The keys to living a life of love are very plainly stated in the Bible. The most powerful one is that of forgiveness.

Recently while experimenting with an energy healing method (EFT) on a problem I was having with a stiff neck, I was stunned that I got immediate relief from the stiffness by simply stating the phrase, “even though I have this stiff neck, I forgive myself and others who may have contributed to it.” I did not have to continue with any of the procedure for that specific problem. The stiffness immediately went away the moment I stated my willingness to forgive.

Jesus taught this principle again in the Lord’s prayer; ” Father forgive us as we forgive others.” The swiftness with which my pain went away is a true testimony to the power of forgiveness. By the way, forgiveness is a love based action while the blame is a fear-based action.

So for me, teaching more of the love and power of following Jesus’ teaching is very motivating. I love to be reminded of the stories of healing and blessing that Jesus brought to earth.

However, I now understand that the people who come to church motivated by fear are not hearing the same message that I hear in the same words. They may hear a story of healing and see a way to gain power and control over others that they fear. Or simply to have power over their own fear of disease and sickness. The same goal is accomplished; just a different path is taken.

Now that I understand the motivations of my fellow church members, I think I can do a better job of showing them love. I accept that they are motivated by fear and I am no longer going to seek to change that. I will continue however to point out to them that they need to make a choice. As Pavlina states in his articles, switching back and forth between modes dilutes ones effectiveness.

By teaching love at one point and then switching to fear based teachings, you find yourself in a very weak state. No one respects an indecisive man. They may fear one who makes bad decisions and love a man who makes good decisions, but like John says of Jesus in The Revelation, the in decisive (or lukewarm) ones get spit out.

So pick a reason - to Love God or to Fear God. Both paths lead to the same end. But moving back and forth between paths uses up energy that could be spent more effectively.

Do You Suffer From Adult Onset Asthma?

If you discover that you have asthma after your twenty-first birthday, you have adult onset asthma. Almost half of all asthma cases are diagnosed before the age of ten years. Another 30% are discovered before the age of forty, and the rest occur in later life. There is a slight increase in womens’ diagnosis after menopause. Whatever age you are when you find you have asthma, this diagnosis will change your life.

Asthma is a condition that causes the airways of your lungs to narrow, restricting the airflow and leaving you short of breath. This can happen because of inflammation from an allergen, an inhaled irritant or because of a spasm of the muscles around the bronchi- the small airways in the lungs.

The most well known symptom of asthma is a sudden onset of wheezing and difficulty getting your breath. These attacks can be very severe, causing hospitalization, or mild and well controlled by medications.

Once the initial diagnosis of adult onset asthma is made, the next step is to discover what type of asthma you have. Allergic asthma is caused by sensitivity to specific substances in your environment. Eliminating these substances is the first step to controlling your asthma.

Idiopathic asthma has no specific cause, but factors such as stress, cold weather and strenuous work or exercise could be factors that influence the frequency of attacks.

You could also discover that you have a combination of both types.

You can keep an ongoing list of things that trigger your attacks. Also, keep a diary of your symptoms and medications to assist your health care professional to develop an effective asthma management plan for you.

Good nutrition plays an important role in the management of adult onset asthma symptoms. A good multivitamin and mineral supplement, in addition to eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables will help your body resist asthma attacks. Researchers have found that low levels of Vitamin C and zinc can cause increased bronchial spasms and wheezing.

Working with your health care professional to develop an asthma management program, and giving extra attention to nutrition will help you keep the symptoms of adult onset asthma under control.

Emile Durkheim’s Analysis of the Problem of Anomie and Its Connections

According to Durkheim, anomie is a breakdown of social norms and it is a condition where norms no longer control the activities of members in society. Individuals cannot find their place in society without clear rules to help guide them. Changing conditions as well as adjustment of life leads to dissatisfaction, conflict, and deviance. He observed that social periods of disruption leads to higher rates of suicide.

While suicide is an individual act, Durkheim argues that the suicide rate is a social fact; something that is external to any individual. It is a product of the social structure of any given society. Durkheim figured by examining the different types of suicide, he could identify key elements of social organization. He then collected several European nations’ suicide rate statistics, which proved to be relatively constant among those nations and among smaller demographics within those nations. He discovered a collective tendency towards suicide among White, Protestant males. Of equal importance to his methodology, Durkheim drew theoretical conclusions on the social causes of suicide. He proposed four types of suicide, based on the degrees of imbalance of two social forces: social integration and moral regulation. Integration is the extent of social relation binding a person or group to others and regulation is defined as the normative or moral demands placed on an individual that comes with membership in a group

Egoistic suicide resulted from lack of social integration. Individuals who were not sufficiently bound to social groups were left with little social support or guidance had higher rates of suicide. An example Durkheim discovered was that of unmarried people, particularly males who, with less to bind and connect them to stable social norms and goals, committed suicide at higher rates than unmarried people.

The second type, altruistic suicide occurs when individuals are too filled with society. It is also results from lack of social integration and is the opposite of egoistic suicide. The self lose significance, where individuals are so integrated into social groups that they lose sight of their individuality and became willing to sacrifice themselves to the group’s interests, even if that sacrifice was their own life. The most common cases of altruistic suicide occurred among members of the military.

On the second scale, that of moral regulation, lies the other two forms of suicide, the first of which is anomic suicide. Anomic suicide was divided it into four categories: acute and chronic economic anomie and acute and chronic domestic anomie. Each involved an imbalance of means and needs, where means were unable to fulfill needs.

Acute economic anomie is when traditional institutions such as religion and government fail to exercise the moral restraints on a capitalist society. Chronic economic anomie is the gradual diminishing of social regulation. Durkheim’s example of was the ongoing industrial revolution, which deteriorated traditional social rules and often failed to replace them. Obtaining wealth and property was not enough to make individuals happy, as was demonstrated by higher suicide rates among the wealthy than the poor.

Acute domestic anomie is sudden changes in individual’s life that results in an inability to adapt. Widowhood is an example of this type of anomie. Chronic domestic anomie refers to the way marriage regulates the sexual and behavioral need amongst men and women. However, marriage provided different regulations for each gender. Bachelors tended to commit suicide at higher rates than married men because of a lack of regulation and established goals and expectations. On the other hand, marriage has traditionally served to over regulate the lives of women by further restricting their already limited opportunities and goals. Unmarried women, as opposed to unmarried men experienced chronic domestic anomie suicide less. The final type of suicide is fatalistic suicide. This type is only discussed briefly because it was seen as a rare phenomena in the real world. Examples include those with over regulated, unrewarding lives such as slaves, childless married women, and young husbands. The reverse situation, namely excessive regulation without integration also leads to fatalistic suicide. The slave is integrated only through ties to his or her master, and his or her future is in the hands of others.

Durkheim distinguished between anomic suicide and egoistic, altruistic, and fatalistic suicide according to the relation of the actor to his society. When men become detached from society, when they are thrown upon their own devices and loosen the bonds that previously had tied them to their world, they are prone to egoistic, altruistic, and fatalistic suicide. When the moral regulations surrounding individual conduct are relaxed and fail to curb human weaknesses, people are prone to anomic suicide.

Dining Around Groveland - On The Way To Yosemite - From Elegant And Posh To Fast & Affordable

As one approaches this tiny hamlet town on the way to Yosemite, it might be that with a quick blink you are past….Don’t blink! Groveland is full of wonderful things to do whether you are Yosemite bound or just out for a road trip. This quaint gold mining village poised at the edge of the Sierras is quick becoming a diner’s Mecca for quality selections spanning a myriad of styles from the fast and affordable to extraordinary and posh.

Lets first talk about the more unique dining choices….
The Iron Door Saloon is a favorite amongst regular two-wheeled travelers to Groveland. The eclectic saloon boasts of being the oldest continuously operating saloon in California and the aged woodwork and huge iron doors are testament to this. Once famous for their buffalo burgers, guests can now also enjoy such California styled treats as chicken Caesar rollups. The Iron Door Saloon is absolutely worth a stop for old west ambiance, intrigue and an interesting set of characters, hungry or not! 209.962.8904.

For the romantics, there is the Victoria Room at the Groveland Hotel. This special-event dining establishment has a beautiful and hushed dining room providing peace and romance for a lovely dinner for two. The gourmet menu pairs well with their Wine Spectator Award wining wine list. Even the new chef, Greg Lutes, comes with a list of accolades including one from Zagat. 209.962.4000.

Pine Mountain Lake, a private community just around the corner from Groveland, has a Country Club that is open to the public. Capable of seating up to 200 people, the Country Club is always the choice for big venued events. While perhaps better known for their dinners, their greatest assets are the Yosemite peaked views. With this in mind, we strongly encourage a lingering lunch on the deck where you can enjoy the both the views above and the golfers below. 209.962.8636.

Evergreen Lodge is a tucked away gem. You will never find this place by accident. Located 8 miles off of Highway 120 and nearly at the Hetch Hetchy entrance to Yosemite, visitors here will find a lodge setting, a reminder of the movie Dirty Dancing, with campfires and s’mores nightly. The main log cabin building holds a good sized restaurant and bar and serves both a gourmet menu and a casual menu of burgers and such. The setting is great fun with an occasional live band on weekends and the food is tastey. 209.379.2606.

The Hotel Charlotte with its owner-chef run dining room Cafe Charlotte is popular with locals and visitors alike and is often said to be like coming to Lynn & Victor’s house for dinner. With an oft changing menu, guests will be at once impressed with the wide variety of choices including selections originating from as far away as Argentina and Thailand mixed in with traditional mediterranean favorites. A small but diverse wine list featuring choices from Sierra Foothill wineries compliments the menu nicely. 209.962.6455.

Each of these venues offers up a plethora of special event dinners throughout the year featuring wineries, music, guest chef’s, themed nights and oodles more. Our most famed collaborative event is the annual Progressive Dinner, scheduled for October 26th, which starts at one dining room and moves from restaurant to restaurant through four courses and ends with dancing at either the Country Club or the Iron-Door-Saloon.http://www.HotelCharlotte.com. has a listing of local scheduled events from these restaurants and more.

Next let’s give mention to the quick-stop local favorites for a fair bite at a good price with warm service thrown in for good measure. Each of these stops can boast a blue ribbon, best in class for some specialty or another and are often the choice for travelers heading through town for a quick bite.

As you peak The Grade coming from the west on Highway 120, your first chance for a meal is Big Oak Lounge, open for breakfast, lunch and diner. This bar with restaurant has recently installed a balanced wine list with an entry level choice, nice mid-priced wine and a great higher-end wine to choose from in both reds and whites. The regular menu features huge servings and abroad selection of favorites including some delicious New York steaks, 209.962.6015

Heading into Groveland, two miles further down the road, on the right is the tiny 10 seater Hot Doggie serving up the famous Casper brand of Hotdogs and a few other choices, all made to order, well priced and delicious. 209.962.8986

Just off Main Street in downtown Groveland there is Stan’s Que on Back Street. Stan specializes in smoked meats, and the custom bar-b-que sauce is truly one-of-a-kind. Stan and Pam offer outdoor seating only and are open May through October, 209.962.7529.

Directly across from Stan’s, but on Main Street is Cocina Michoacana, the popular Mexican restaurant, doing an authentic job seven days a week, lunch and dinner. The green sauce is by far the best we have had north of the border, try the enchiladas.

Continue heading east and at the corner of Feretti Road you will find the traditional diner of PJ’s, always hot, always fast and we very much enjoy their soft-serve ice-cream cones in the hottest days of August, 209.962.7501.

Just around the corner, on Feretti Road is Two Guys Pizza Pies serving up all-you-can-eat weekday lunch specials that can’t be beat! Two Guys also does delivery and has a fresh salad bar, 209-962-GUYS.

If you like a nice country drive, stay on Feretti Road out to the Airport where you will find the little Corsair Cafe serving up a menu that includes burgers and perfect french fries. 209.962-6793

The value and diversity of choice you will receive while dining in Groveland far exceeds the pricing you will find once inside Yosemite National Park. We hope you will stop in Groveland while on your way to Yosemite for a bit, a bite or an overnight!

Max Weber’s Typology of Forms of Authority - Traditional, Rational-Legal, and Charismatic

In pre-modern and modern societies, there has been a hierarchy of command of which everyone must adhere to. In order for this system to operate, there must be someone in charge or otherwise known as authority. According to Weber, authority is power accepted as legitimate by those subjected to it. Weber outlines three forms of authority in modern societies: traditional, charismatic, and rational-legal. These forms of authority are ideal pure types that are rarely “pure” in real life.

Rational-legal authority is belief in the legality of patterns of standard rules and the right of those elevated to authority under such rules to issue commands. Authority is held by legally established impersonal orders and extends to people only by virtue of offices they hold. The power of government officials is determined by the offices to which they are appointed or elected because of their individual qualifications. As long as individuals hold these offices, they have a certain amount of power, but once they leave office, their rational-legal authority is lost

There are various ways that rational-legal authority could develop. Systems of laws and regulation develop in many societies and there are many different principles of legality that could occur. With the development of a rational-legal system, there is likely to be a political system which becomes rationalized in a similar way. Associated with political systems are constitutions, written documents, and established offices, regularized modes of representation, regular elections and political procedures. These are developed in opposition to earlier systems such as monarchies or other traditional forms, where there are no well developed set of rules.

As political systems develop in a rational manner, authority takes on a legal form. Those who govern either have or appear to have a legitimate legal right to do so. Those who are subordinate within this system accept the legality of the rulers, believing in the right of those who have legitimate rights to exercise power. Those with the power then exercise power based on this right of legitimacy.

Rational-legal authority may be challenged by those who are subordinate but this challenge is unlikely to result in changes in the nature of the system very quickly. According to Weber, such power struggles could be based on ethnicity, nationalism, not classism, and are mostly political struggles.

Weber’s examination of legitimate authority led him to define an ideal-type bureaucracy. An ideal-type is a rationally and systematically constructed pure type of action, which can rarely taken place in reality and used as a measuring tool to determine the similarity between actual social institutions and defined ones. The ideal-type bureaucracy Weber developed incorporated hierarchy, impersonality, written rules of conduct, promotion based on achievement, specialized division of labor, and efficiency. Information flows up the chain of command and directives flow down, according to Weber’s model. Impersonal rules explicitly define duties, responsibilities, operating procedures, and rules of conduct.

Individual offices are highly specialized, and appointments are made one the basis of qualifications rather than ascribed status. Working together, these characteristics are designed to promote the collective goals of the organization. This ideal-type bureaucracy was intended to promote economic growth and prosperity. Many of its concepts are echoed in today’s capitalist and political systems.

Traditional authority is authority in which the legitimacy of the authority figure is based around custom. Legitimacy and power to control is handed down from the past and this power can be exercised in quite dictatorial ways. This is the type of authority in which the traditional rights of a powerful and dominant individual or group are accepted, or at least not challenged, by subordinate individuals. These could be religious, sacred, or spiritual forms, a well established and slowly changing culture, or tribal, family, or clan type structures.

The dominant individual could be a priest, clan leader, family head, or some other patriarchal figure, or dominant elite might govern. In many cases, traditional authority is supported by myths or connection to the sacred, social artifacts such as a cross or flag, and by structures and institutions which perpetuate this authority. Historically, traditional authority has been the most common form among governments. An example of this is the kings and queens in the English monarchy system, which must belong to certain families in order to obtain their positions.

Traditional authority often dominated pre-modern societies. It is based on the belief in the sanctity of tradition, of “the eternal yesterday.” Because of the shift in human motivation, it is often difficult for modern individuals to conceive of the hold that tradition had in pre-modern societies.

According to Weber, traditional authority is a means by which inequality is created and preserved. If no one challenges the authority of the traditional leader or group, the leader is likely to remain dominant. Also, for him, traditional authority blocks the development of rational-legal forms of authority, a viewpoint he was particularly partial to.

Charismatic authority exists when the control of others is based on an individual’s personal characteristics, such as extraordinary ethical, heroic, or religious virtuosity. Charismatic leaders are obeyed because people feel a strong emotional bond to them. Hitler, Gandhi, Napoleon, and Julius Caesar were all charismatic leaders. Whether such powers actually exist is irrelevant; the fact that followers believe that such powers exist is what is important.

Weber considers charisma to be a driving and creative force which surges through traditional authority and established rules. The sole basis of charismatic authority is the recognition or acceptance of the claims of the leader by the followers. Charismatic authority can be revolutionary in nature, challenging traditional authority and sometimes rational-legal. This type of authority could easily degenerate into traditional authority in which the power is exercised by those who surround the charismatic leader.

Charismatic authority is the antithesis of routine activities and represents the desire for disruption and change of the prevailing social order. It is a necessary part of the dialectic between the human need for structure and the equally human need for variation and innovation in society. Charismatic authority is different from rational or traditional authority in that it develops not from established orders or traditions, but rather from the special trust the charismatic leader induces in his followers, the peculiar powers he exhibits, and the unique qualities he possesses. According to Weber, it is difficult for charismatic leaders to maintain their authority because followers must continue to legitimize this authority. There is a need for the charismatic leader to constantly exhibit leadership performance to his followers to reinforce the legitimacy of his authority.

The basis of Weber’s distinction between power and authority is that power is the ability to impose one’s will on another, regardless of the other’s wishes, and despite any resistance he may offer. Power is therefore relational; it requires one person to dominate, and the other to submit. This assumes that one person will acquiesce, co-operate with or consent to the domination of the other, and this cannot be true of all relationships. The act of issuing a command does not presuppose obedience. Weber argues that an individual can exercise power in three ways: through direct physical power, by reward and punishment and by the influence of opinion. The exercise of power is more likely to be indirect and coercive: a combination of rewarding and punishing through the use of argument, debate and rhetoric.

Authority, by comparison, is a quality that enhances power, rather than being itself a form of power. The word “authority” comes from the verb “to authorize”; therefore an individual’s power must be authorized by the group in order for it to be legitimate. An individual is considered an authority because of his technical expertise, combined with his ability to communicate effectively with the group. The individual in authority is the one who is primary in the group, controlling certain aspects of what the other group members do and say, and perhaps even what and how they think.
