Your bedroom should be more than just a place to wearily fall asleep in each night and groggily wake up to each morning. A bedroom should be a sanctuary of peace and tranquility where one can relax while reading a book or watching a movie on television, as well as sneak away on a lazy weekend for a quick nap. Your bedroom could be more functional than it is currently and this short article will give you some tips on how to transform your bedroom.

The size of your bedroom, more than anything else, determines what you can do as far as decorating and furniture options go. If you’re lucky enough to have a huge master suite with room for a separate sitting area, your options are almost limitless. If you’re a little cramped for space or have an average size bedroom, some creative thinking may be needed to maximize your space.

For those with a larger room or master suite type set-up, a very popular option is to create a separate sitting area in one part of the room. This can be done a few different ways. First, consider a comfortable, informal sofa or couch with a small coffee table or a few end tables. Set your television up so it can be seen easily from both your bed and the sitting area-you may need a swiveling base or arm to accomplish this. Other options for this sitting area are a nice daybed or comfortable futon. Futons are a great option because of their versatility. If you have a large window or patio entrance in your bedroom, arrange your sitting area so as to maximize the natural light you receive there.

For those who are little space-challenged, some great options are still out there. First, evaluate the size of your bed. If your king or queen size bed takes up a good portion of your bedroom, consider dropping down a size or two. This added space can drastically change the flow of your room and open up options such as a small futon or perhaps a just a nice upholstered chair or two with a cocktail table. The trick is to use your space to its fullest potential. Measure out your space and make plans on paper before you throw your back out moving the bed five times.

For 1 in 7 couples in the UK, falling pregnant is not as easy as it seems. Women spend most of their early adult years avoiding getting pregnant, only to find it takes much longer than expected by the time they reach their early to mid 30’s. Finding out about fertility problems earlier is so important, as the longer women have to seek treatment the higher their chances of getting pregnant.

There are recognised medical conditions that are known to affect fertility:

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
This condition - where a woman’s ovaries contain a large number of little cysts - cause hormonal imbalances and makes it difficult for eggs to be released. This causes irregular periods, weight gain, hair growth on the body and acne. If you suffer from PCOS talk to your GP for suitable treatments - up to 50% of women may conceive within 6-9 months of taking the prescribed drug treatment.

Endometriosis
Damaged, blocked or twisted tubes can cause fertility problems for women. Endometriosis can cause scar tissue and adhesions to form, gradually blocking the fallopian tubes - the pathway the egg takes to reach the womb.
An infection such as Chlamydia can also block the fallopian tubes. Chlamydia is usually undetectable, so it’s always advisable to have regular pap smears with your Family Planning Centre or STI clinic. It is now possible to buy at-home Chlamydia tests from leading chemists. If tubes have been blocked for a considerable length of time the damage may be irreversible, but it’s advisable you speak to your GP for advice.

Hormonal imbalance
Changes in certain hormone levels can lead to your ovaries not producing mature eggs that can be fertilised. The key hormone Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) helps the follicles that hold the eggs within the ovaries, ripen and push mature eggs to the surface of the ovary to be released. If there’s an imbalance in this hormone, eggs can be released before they’re ready to be fertilised and their quality is compromised. FSH gives an indication of Ovarian Reserve (whether eggs are good enough quality to be capable of fertilization).

Fertell can help assess your fertility levels with its new Ovarian Reserve test. It’s a simple at-home urine test that gives results within 30 minutes. It measures FSH levels on day 3 of a cycle, indicating whether eggs are capable of fertilization.

Poor Diet, lifestyle, high or low weight and age all contribute to declining female fertility. Cutting down on alcohol, giving up smoking, losing weight, can all improve fertility levels.

Psychological Impact of fertility issues

Having a baby can seem like the ultimate goal for many women - even if they don’t realise it. Pressure from parents, and in-laws, can mean that the stress to reproduce is three-fold. It may seem that it’s not just the couple trying for a baby, but all their relatives too.

Some tips to lessen some of the emotional stress:

* If you’re trying for a baby, try to keep your decision a secret, at least for the first year. In some cases, it pays to be circumspect.
* Ask your partner to speak to his parent’s if you feel that they are putting pressure onto the two of you
* Explain that it is upsetting having to tell everybody in the family the state of your conception every time you get together.
* Remember to ask how your partner is coping with the pressure and stress - at these times he may feel like nothing more than a sperm donor.
* It’s important to remember then that parents and in-laws are just trying to help
* Make time for yourselves as a couple - talk about things other than trying for a baby
* Take some gentle exercise - walking, swimming, and dancing
* Switch caffeine fuelled drinks for non-caffeinated e.g herbal and fruit teas, mineral water to calm and soothe
* Find out about possible fertility issues as soon as possible to give you either peace of mind to continue trying or picks up fertility issues sooner, giving you more time to seek appropriate treatment, giving you a higher chance of conceiving.

Fertell helps you find out sooner with it’s new Ovarian Reserve test and it fertility test for couples (includes an Ovarian Reserve test for women and a test for men that measures the concentration of motile sperm).

What is Feminism?

Throughout history, women have always struggled to gain equality, respect, and the same rights as men. This has been difficult because of patriarchy, an ideology in which men are superior to women and have the right to rule women. This ideology has permeated the social structures of societies throughout the world and as a result, even in the new millennium, women are still struggling for rights that most men take for granted. The struggle was even more difficult for women of color because not only were they dealing with issues of sexism, but also racism. In order to fight patriarchy, feminism and feminist theory was born.

What is feminism? By general definition, feminism is a philosophy in which women and their contributions are valued. It is based on social, political and economical equality for women. Feminists can be anyone in the population, men, women, girl or boys.

Feminism can also be described as a movement or a revolution that includes women and men who wish the world to be equal without boundaries. These boundaries or blockades are better known as discrimination and biases against gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status and economic status. Everyone views the world with his or her own sense of gender and equality. Feminists view the world as being unequal. They wish to see the gender gap and the idea that men are superior to women decreased or even abolished. There are many different types of feminist theory and each has had a profound impact on women and gender studies.

The first is cultural feminism, which is the theory that there are fundamental personality differences between men and women, and those women’s differences are special. This theory supports the idea that there are biological differences between men and women and sexism can be overcome by embracing the “women’s way.”

The second type is individualist or libertarian feminist. This feminism is based upon libertarian philosophies, with the focus on autonomy, rights, liberty, independence, and diversity. Next, there is the radical feminism; this theory began during the Sixties. This ideology focuses on social change, and “attempts to draw lines between biologically - determined behavior and culturally- determined behavior” in order to free both men and women as much as possible from their previous narrow gender roles.

Finally, there is liberal feminism, a theory that focuses on the idea that all people are created equal and that education is the primary means to change discrimination.

Picture this scene. We were in gross anatomy lab when we were asked to cut open the chest cavity of our cadaver. Feeling squeamish yet?

What happened next was a bit of a shock. Cadavers have been soaked in formaldehyde for at least six months before they get to the lab so you might imagine that they smell like formaldehyde on the outside as well as on the inside. That wasn’t the case.

When we opened the chest cavity the first thing I could smell was not formaldehyde. I could smell cigarette smoke. It was a real eye opener. Imagine my surprise when I found that this former smoker’s lungs were black through and through. There were no pink spots to be found. The lungs were black on the outside and they were black on the inside.

After slicing through one of the lungs, we found that it was the same degree of blackness all the way through. Everything was black. I understood right then and there what smoking could do to the human body.

When I was a young boy, I remember that my great aunt had emphysema. I can still see the oxygen canister that was ever present in her home. It was never far away. Life has many hardships but I think some of the bitterest are the ones we bring upon ourselves.

Practically everyone knows that smoking is bad and yet so many people continue to smoke. If you are a smoker you probably have thought of quitting many times. Nicotine is very addictive. Yet, people can and do quit.

My mother was a smoker. I was stationed far away in Hawaii for my first tour in the Navy and it would still bother me whenever I thought about her smoking. One day I sent her a subliminal tape designed to help her quit. In a few weeks she reported that she did indeed quit.

Smoking increases the risk of developing many diseases such as cancer, emphysema and heart disease. Believe it or not, even the possibility of developing gum disease is increased by smoking.

The cost of cigarettes is pretty high too. I was in the store the other day and the person next to me purchased a pack of cigarettes. I was surprised to hear the clerk ask for four dollars and twenty-five cents. Some people smoke a pack or more per day. The cost adds up. Seems like cigarettes are easy prey for the taxing authorities.

I don’t know how you feel, but it appears that there are plenty of good reasons to quit smoking. I still have a relative that smokes and I hope she quits too. I’d like to see her preserve and protect her health.

If you are still smoking and assuming you would like to quit, you could print this article out and read it every day for motivation. If you know of anyone who is still smoking, maybe you could send it to them for inspiration. If these stories can help a few more people it would be good.

Millions of people worldwide suffer an occasional bout of heartburn. Many of those suffer frequently, and try one product after another to gain heartburn relief. Products range from simple over-the-counter indigestion relievers to prescription drugs for heartburn relief. But is heartburn relief possible without drugs of any kind?

It has been said that only about 1 out of 100 people who take drugs for heartburn relief really need them. Heartburn, like every other pain in your body, is a warning signal. It is telling you that something must be changed.

If the warning light in your car tells you to check your engine, you do not ask a mechanic to disconnect the light so it will not bother you. That is asking for a bigger problem! You ask the mechanic to check the engine, and correct the root problem that causes the light to come on.

Heartburn relief should not be a matter of turning off the “warning light” so you don’t see it. Heartburn relief should address the root cause of the warning light.

Cause of Heartburn

In simple terms, heartburn is a muscular problem.

The lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a specialized ring of muscle located at the end of the esophagus, opens when you swallow to let food pass into the stomach. It then closes quickly to keep things in the stomach. When the LES doesn’t close quickly enough, or reopens at the wrong time, stomach acid flows back into the esophagus. The acid on the sensitive lining of the lower esophagus causes a burning sensation.

True heartburn relief must make the LES operate properly. It must keep the LES from relaxing inappropriately, or it must strengthen the LES. How can that be done?

How can you get true heart relief without drugs?

1. Diet

Heartburn relief must obviously pay attention to the food that is moving from the esophagus into the stomach. We are all different. Our stomachs produce differing amounts of gastric juices, with differing degrees of acidity. The food you eat must be digestible by your individual system.

Returning to our vehicle illustration, what happens when you use improper fuel? It isn’t long until the engine lets you know! If the fuel contains water or sediment, or if the octane level is wrong, you will know. All you have to do is listen to your engine.

Heartburn relief requires listening to your body. The next time you have heartburn, think back to what “fuel” you just put into your body. What did you eat? Write it down and forget it for now. Do this each time you have heartburn. After a month, look over the list. Does the same “fuel” always demand heartburn relief? Avoiding that fuel may be your answer.

2. Actions

The failure of your muscle to keep the door closed between stomach and esophagus may be as simple a matter as your actions. You may be doing things that make the door open.

Eating too fast, eating too much, or not chewing food well can all contribute to heartburn. Bending at the waist after eating is commonly connected to heartburn, as is tight clothing. Allowing yourself to become overweight puts undue pressure on that area of the body, an action best corrected by losing weight. Going to bed on a full stomach or exercising too soon after eating will also call for heartburn relief.

Your heartburn relief may be as simple as changing your actions. Try eating more slowly, and chewing every bite thoroughly before swallowing. This incorporates more saliva, which helps the stomach digest the food. Stop eating before you are too full. Wait at least 2 hours after eating before exercising - at least 3 hours before going to bed. Addressing other actions that put pressure on the lower esophagus may also bring heartburn relief.

3. Water

Another factor in heartburn relief is the consumption of adequate amounts of clean water. If you suffer heartburn during or after exercise, you may simply be dehydrated. Every muscle, including the LES that prevents backflow of stomach juices, needs sufficient water to function well. Be sure you drink plenty of water daily, with extra when exercising.

4. Garlic

Garlic provides heartburn relief for many, especially those who have H. Pylori. H. pylori is a bacterium found in the stomach. It works with acid secretion to damage stomach tissue, causing inflammation and contributing to heartburn. For heartburn relief, try eating 1 or 2 cloves of fresh, raw garlic daily until the H. pylori is eliminated.

5. Oxygen

Have you considered whether you are breathing deeply and regularly? As noted above, the root cause of heartburn is muscular. Muscles demand oxygen for efficient functioning. If, because of stress or poor habits, you fail to breathe deeply and regularly, you deprive the LES of the oxygen it needs to be strong and operate properly.

Heartburn relief for you may be as simple as deep, regular breathing during and after eating. It will help you relax, and will send adequate oxygen to the sphincter muscle that prevents or permits heartburn.

If you experience heartburn on a frequent basis, please contact your physician to be sure other underlying causes are not involved. Once you have ruled out more serious concerns, try the above tips for heartburn relief.

Want to watch satellite TV but cannot decide if it is the right choice? Well, you are not the only one caught in this classic dilemma. After all, we are pampered with so many different options from broadcast TV to cable and satellite TV and recently, you can even watch satellite TV on PC if you want. Let us take a look at what are some of the pluses and minuses of watching satellite TV and hopefully, this would help us make a more informed decision on whether we want to watch satellite TV in the near future.

The Pluses to Watch Satellite TV

1. Satellite TV systems are tough cookies. Even in times of bad weather, lightning or storms that cause power trips and blackouts, the disruption to satellite TV system is minimal. Once power is restored to your homes, you can immediately tune back to your favorite satellite TV channels without losing time. Cable TV would experience more downtime since the cable lines would have to be restored before you can start watching cable TV again.

2. Satellite TV relies on receiving free-to-air broadcasts from satellites in orbit. As long as there is an open sky, you can receive the TV feeds. This also means that you can watch satellite TV practically from every inch of earth as long as there is no obstruction to transmission like rough terrains in the form of hills and mountains, or skyscrapers. Digital satellite TV technology is growing in popularity because of the high definition, crystal clear picture quality it gives.

3. TV viewers love to watch TV with variety. The good news is they can get to watch satellite TV channels from thousands of TV broadcast stations across the globe.

The Minuses to Watch Satellite TV

1. The monthly subscription fees for simple satellite TV packages are lower than cable TV packages. However, you would quickly realize that your favorite movies or TV shows may not be available in the standard or cheapest packages, especially for foreign programs. So you end up either paying more per month or pay per view. The trick to overcome this is to install your own satellite dish system or watch satellite TV on PC using PC satellite TV software.

2. Setting up a DIY satellite dish system can be daunting and overwhelming for a technically challenged person. Not only so, top-of-the-range satellite dish systems can be an expensive investment. You may have to source for a reputable service provider to do the job. Alternatively, look for free installation that comes with subscriptions with the service providers.

The passage of script through the generations gives us an interesting perspective of the processes used in past times. This is none more peculiar than when we consider the Cherokee “talking leaves” method of written communication.

The recorded history of the Native Americans began, like all other cultures, with an oral history being passed down from generation to generation. The Native Americans used imitative magic, meaning the stories or events they wanted to communicate were acted out using ceremony, sacred dancing or other rituals. When a shaman had successful communication with nature, bringing rain, sun or crops to abundance, these powerful rituals were recorded as petroglyphs.

Theses pictorial cave paintings depicted animals and people, often to communicate actions such as hunting or traditional dancing. The Cherokee Indians of North America wanted to evolve their system of writing once the Europeans arrived in the early 19th century. The Cherokee identified the success of the Europeans’ writing system and wanted to develop their own system of recording events and history.

The Cherokee broke their language down to eighty-six specific syllables and used symbols to notate these sounds. The Cherokee adapted their language to the written form by borrowing letters from the Roman, Greek and Hebrew alphabet from literature they acquired from missionaries. The written language of the Cherokee is characterized as ‘talking leaves’. The Sequoyah, who are descended from a Cherokee woman and a British trader, are credited with making ‘talking leaves’ widespread throughout Native American tribes. The system of writing dates in completion to 1821 and the first printed issue of the ‘Cherokee Phoenix’ dates to February 21, 1828.

Fundraising Organization - Why They Can Raise You More Funds

There are some very interesting fundraising organizations on the market today. If you are looking to pull off any kind of successful fundraiser you would be well advised to seek the services of a fundraising organization. This article will outline some of the major benefits of hiring a fundraising organization and what to look for to achieve optimum success.

The best part about hiring a fundraising organization is the fact that they are specifically trained to raise money. Too often most people try to raise money for a charitable cause, but they are so emotionally attached to the organization that they do not run the campaign properly. You should check the track record of a fundraising organization to see if they have dealt in a common interest or topic that your organization or group is raising money for. Once you have found an organization you are comfortable with you can move on to other things.

The second big advantage to hiring a fundraising organization is that they will have a proven plan for success. The experienced fundraising organizations should have developed solid contacts with private family foundations, and larger foundations that might be able to contribute funds to your organization. These funds might even be ongoing if your cause fits there requirements. The organization should have a good understanding of how these foundations work to make the process much easier to work with.

The next advantage to working with a fundraising organization is their ability to work with your leaders and board members. A good organization will be able to counsel and evaluate the talents of your organization to make sure that the duties are being carried out properly. This is so important, but often the most over looked.

If you have had success raising money in the past you can repeat your methods, but if you need to make sure your campaign is done right you should leave it to a href="http://www.good-fundraising-ideas.com/fund-raising-organization.php">fundraising organization professional.

The past few weeks I have been sorting through my overwhelming collection of fabric. Yes, for most of you this may only take a few hours or a couple days, but for my toppling stash, it can very easily take a couple of weeks! :) As I am sorting different pieces into piles for projects, several thoughts are running through my mind - Why did I ever buy this fabric? Why didn’t I buy another yard of that? Oh, I wish I had the coordinate to this floral! I’m tired of this fabric; it has sat on my shelf for over 5 years and I still haven’t used it.

Often I will end up with more fabric than I need for a project or not quite enough for what I am wanting to do. What are my guidelines for buying fabric? Everyone has their own ideas, but here are a few of my thoughts…

When I first started sewing and buying fabric, I had a 3 yard rule. It didn’t matter what it was, if I liked it, I bought 3 yards. In my mind this gave me enough for several kinds of garments, lots of quilt blocks and borders and plenty for cutting and stitching errors. Several years later, I knew my 3 yard rule had to change. Not only was I running out of space to store all my fabric, but my checkbook just couldn’t handle the expense.

I desperately needed to develop a new strategy for buying fabric, so I came up with the following rules:

It’s a piece I love & can use in various ways, 3-4 yards.
It’s something I like & don’t have anything that is similar, 2-3 yards.
I absolutely love it, but don’t have any idea what I’ll use it for, 1-2 yards.
It’s unique & different, but not my favorite, 1/2 - 1 yard.
It’s on sale for a fantastic price & can be used in a hundred different ways, whatever is left on the bolt.

Now, with quite a fabric stash built up, I don’t always buy following these guidelines. Over the years my taste and thinking in fabric has changed. Some fabrics I have used and am now tired of trying to use in new projects. A few are dated in the sense that some prints and colors are popular for a time and then go out of style. I have also developed more of a feel for which fabrics I will be more likely to use and what projects I can create from them.

I still love fabric and will indulge in several yards here and there, but not to the extent that I did in past years. I try to keep in mind the following:

I’m using it for a project right now, whatever I need plus 1/4-1/2 yard extra.
It’s a solid, marbled, textured, or tone on tone print that can easily be used to stitch embroidery designs on, plus many other uses, 3-4 yards.
It’s a novelty fabric, floral design, kid’s theme or Christmas print and I love it, 1-2 yards.

What’s my theory behind these guidelines? If I am only purchasing a yardage amount for a project, I like to have a little extra. That way if I make mistakes such as figuring wrong measurements or cutting wrong sizes, I’m still ok. A solid, marbled, textured or tone on tone fabric is perfect for embellishing with embroidery; for obvious reasons - the designs will show up on these fabrics versus a busy print. Not only are these pieces great for embroidery, but they also work well for blending or coordinating novelty and floral print fabrics. A fabric that is an obvious or busy print is more limited and can’t be used quite as many ways as a solid, so I try not to buy as much of it. It can easily be incorporated with several solids or tone on tone fabrics.

This lets me get the fabric I need, while letting me purchase some fabric for future use. It keeps my fabric stash in check, but doesn’t let it dwindle down to nothing! There are still times when I enter a fabric store or go online and buy more than I really need. Or as my mom used to say when I would come home with a sack full of fabric or another box of fabric arrived at our front door, “You just can’t stand it; you just had to buy it!” But when starting a new project, I try to use fabric from my collection with maybe only needing to buy a piece or two to blend in with what I already own.

Do I regret having the fabric that keeps my shelves overflowing? No, definitely not! Maybe I went a little overboard, but I have found it very useful to have multiple pieces in several colors of prints and solids. I can pull out pieces and coordinate the colors I want for whatever project I am currently work on. I may only need one or two additional pieces to complete it or perhaps none at all.

The next time you are ready to buy yards of fabric, keep in mind what you are going to use it for. Is it just something you love and will not really use? Or is it a marbled or textured piece of fabric that can be used to stitch embroidery designs, blend with floral or novelty fabrics or used as a quilt backing?

Do keep in mind that your fabric buying habits and ideas will change. There will be times when you are sewing more projects with prints versus solids or batiks. Or perhaps two or three colors will grab your attention for several months. There are most certainly no rights or wrongs in purchasing fabric, just different ideas. Thinking about what you are buying and the reason for it may help your stash to be put into quilts and other projects instead of just sitting on the shelf.

Career Advice - Nothing Happens Until You Sell Yourself! How To Promote Your Career

A well-known adage advises that you have only to invent a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door, bearing recognition and riches. Believe me that’s poor career advice!

If you are content to accept that bit of career counseling, you are likely to end up with a shelf full of unsold traps.

Common sense says that inventing a better mousetrap is only the first step toward a successful career. Until potential buyers (i.e. employers) are aware of your mousetrap (i.e. your accomplishments and potential) and decide to choose you as a supplier you will be left waiting for success.

Few people are comfortable with promoting themselves. The idea generates a knee-jerk reaction: “I’d be too embarrassed to brag about myself. Besides, my work speaks for itself.” Wrong! Nothing happens until you sell yourself.

Sometimes peer pressure says, “Don’t raise your flag too high above the rest of us. We’ll all be put on the spot so we have to perform up to a higher standard.”

This is a counterproductive attitude except for those who are willing to lag behind in the comfort of the herd.

Overt braggarts are pains in the neck. Braggadocio will usually backfire. On the other hand, doing a good job, consistently, and letting the world know about it is an essential to success.

Five Ways To Promote Your Career

Here are five suggestions to help you promote your career.

1. Be sure your performance deserves recognition. You are programmed for failure if you try to take credit for more than you do.

2. Be sure your boss and the organization know what you are accomplishing. They may be taking you for granted.

Seek opportunities to work with other departments. Make contacts and friends. Let them know what you do.

3. If your organization maintains a public relations office, get to know the people who work there. If they recognize you as a knowledgeable source, they are more likely to publicize your work.

4. Be active in trade associations, civic clubs and public service activities. With your employer’s permission, make speeches and write articles for the trade press and general news media. Everybody wins when you do. Your employer basks in the sunlight of your achievements. You gain visibility and contacts. You polish your skills and your image.

5. If you have done a job alone, don’t hesitate to accept the credit. Be just as quick to share the accolades when there has been a team effort.

Who Is Served By Your Reluctance?

If you are reluctant to promote your wares, ask yourself these questions:

If I can provide something of benefit, shouldn’t I let the rest of the world know about it? Am I on an ego trip if I sit back and expect the world to beat a path to my door? Whose interests are being served by my reluctance to make known what I can do?

How many mice will I have helped to eliminate if I have built a better mousetrap, but nobody buys one because they don’t know about its value?
