The Hero’s Journey (also known as the Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. It is upon this structure that situations are superimposed. This is why stories such as Alien (1979), Gladiator (2000), Godfather (1972), American Beauty (1999), Annie Hall (1977) and many others (all deconstructed at www.clickok.co.uk/index4.html) appear to be different but are all constructed, almost sequence by sequence, in the same way.

The following blockbusters have all been structured around the Hero’s Journey template: Titanic, 1997 - grossed over $600,000,000; Star Wars, 1977 - grossed over $460,000,000; Shrek 2, 2004 - grossed over $436,000,000; ET, 1982 - grossed over $434,000,000; Spiderman, 2002 - grossed over $432,000,000. So how come you don’t know it inside out?

For a number of very valid reasons, if you want to write (and sell) successful stories, whether they’re Hollywood blockbusters, Indie successes, novels or other story forms, you need to master the Hero’s Journey in a very detailed way…

EVERY HERO GETS A NEW NAME

Every Hero transforms from an Ordinary (Old) Self to a New Self. It is the Hero’s New Self that has the capacity to conquer challenges that the Old Self could not.

The emergence of the New Self is demonstrated in a number of ways. One of these is the receiving of a New Name. Specific scenes address the Hero by his (or her) Old and New Name.

In Dances with Wolves (Academy Award Winner Best Picture, 1990), “John Dunbar” is the name of the Hero’s Old Self and “Dances with Wolves” is the name of his New Self.

In City Slickers (1991), before Mitch, Phil and Ed set off on their Journey, they’re “City Slickers.” When they return, they’re “Cowboys.”

In Big Jake (1971), John Wayne is initially “Daddy.” Finally, he is “Father.”

In The Matrix (1999), “Neo” becomes “The One.”

Recent reports of wheat gluten tainted with aminopterin in commercial dog food manufactured by Menu Foods has spurred a nationwide recall of at least 95 private label and major dog food brands.

Aminopterin is a rat poison that has been used to induce abortions in the past and is prohibited for use in the United States. The aminopterin apparently found its way into the dog food via wheat gluten produced in China by a new supplier of the ingredient to Menu Foods.

As a result more than 16 pets have died to date. Reports of Kidney failure in dogs who have eaten the contaminated dog food is spreading in news flashes around the globe.

Now a new potentially fatal dog killer has been discovered in the recalled food by the FDA. Government tests have uncovered a chemical used in the manufacture of plastics in the recalled dog food.

Melamine has been discovered in tested samples of recalled dog food from Menu Foods and in the previously suspect wheat gluten. This chemical which is also utilized as a fertilizer has been discovered in the urine of sick pets and in the kidney of a pet that died.

If you buy any of the commercial dog food manufactured by menu Foods and listed at menufoods.com/recall/product_dog.html

Then you have been feeding rat poison, and now a chemical that is used to make plastics to your dog.

It should be no surprise that dogs live shorter lives than possible. In fact, dogs have a potential life expectancy of close to 25 years but most dogs live only an average of 10 years.

We stopped buying commercial dog food such as those listed in the recall years ago after we discovered skin conditions and other ailments in our dogs.

The change for the better was evident in a few short weeks as the junk in their system was replaced by healthy and nutritious foods.

Take the initiative now. Stop buying toxic poison and killing your dogs with junk that in our view is not suitable as food.

Your dog will give you a hug and be healthier for it.

Our dogs were sickly and we couldn’t figure out why. We took them off commercial dog food and are we ever glad we did. See what is in your dog food at http://www.dogs-4life.com/dog-food-that-kills.html

Selling ebooks with resell rights can be an extremely profitable venture. With resell rights ebooks and marketing tools you can began making money online right away. You don’t have to create your own product. This will save you tons of time and money on research and development. That’s why marketing these products is so appealing.

However, there are many out there who avoid selling resale rights ebooks and internet marketing tools simply because they believe that they can’t compete with the many other marketers selling the very same product online. Others believe that the market for these products is saturated because there are so many others marketing these products.

So, how do you compete with other marketers selling the very same product for at the same price to the same market you have chosen? The answer to this question is actually pretty simple.

What you first need to understand is that better than 90% of all people who have resale rights licenses to the same products as you, will either market the products incorrectly, or won’t market them at all. What this means to you is that only about 10% of those who have those same products are in competition with you. Truth be told, it doesn’t really matter how much competition there is in the market or even how many people are selling the same thing. What really matters is how each product is marketed.

What you need to do first, is to is set yourself apart from other marketers selling the same resale rights products. Don’t worry about what these other marketers are doing. Be different and make you style your own. You can start by making your product appear different. The license you have may allow you to do a number different things. For instance, you can change the sales letter or create a new book cover or box cover. Try to make the product look and feel completely different.

After you have made all the changes you are allowed to make, take a little time to research what other marketers may be doing. For instance, if you are planning to market with Google AdWords or Yahoo, find out what keywords your competitors are bidding on. Also, find out what they are paying for those keywords. You can either pay more for a particular keyword, or you can bid on different but more targeted set of keywords.

Here’s an example. Say you are selling a resale rights product on “cheesecake recipes.” Don’t use “cheesecake recipes” as your keyword. Instead, try using “easy cheesecake recipes,” or “cheesecake recipes online.” Try to narrow your market by being more precise. You can be sure that most of your competition won’t be choosing their keywords with such care.

You should also try other methods for marketing your resale rights products. Develop an email list and then market to it. Purchase the right to market to other people’s e-zines and opt-in lists. Write your own articles and submit them to the article directories. You can even try holding tele-seminars. The most important thing you can do is to establish yourself as an expert in the niche market area that is related to your resale rights product. All of these things will help to set you apart from others who are marketing the very same products. Now you are ready to go out and start building your very own solid resell rights ebook business.

Having done considerable research concerning anxiety-related disorders, I was quite surprised at some of the information concerning social phobia, or social anxiety as it is often labeled. This surprise information spurred me on to share this knowledge with those who have social anxiety or are attempting to deal with a loved one who has this affliction. My purpose, in addition to sharing what I will call “secret” knowledge, is to briefly describe social anxiety, its symptoms, treatments and to offer encouragement to victims of this regrettable disorder.

I understand that millions of Americans are suffering with this social anxiety disorder and that psychologists claim it ranks as the third largest of all psychological problems in our country; and that panic attacks rank pretty high also. It is understandable with all the great advances in every area of life taking place in the U.S. at speeds faster than a speeding bullet, and with the great expectations placed on the average citizen to master each of these advances in one way or another, that at least 15 million of us have some kind of anxiety disorder.

Perhaps not a great segment of our public domain understand much about this social anxiety disorder which is not too difficult to understand; but what I do not understand and what really surprises me, is the high, almost unbelievable, percentage of professionals in the fields of mental and medical health that misdiagnose this particular social anxiety or phobia. Reports vary, but some have reported as high as 90% of those with social anxiety as being misdiagnosed with panic disorder, manic depressive, schizophrenic and other disorders. This is a tragedy that those dealing with this anxiety disorder should not have to endure. So what is this social anxiety disorder?

Let us say you have social anxiety and you go to your favorite fast food place. You are dying for your favorite combo. You sit in the car, afraid to go up to the door. You are sweating and wishing you hadn’t come. But you are hungry so you get out of the car and you awkwardly open the door and go in, wondering if the waiter will see your mouth tremble when you give your order and your shaking hand when you pay; and you know you will probably drop your change. You hate standing at the counter waiting for your order because people are looking at you, thinking you are dressed like a dodo; and you will probably be so nervous you will spill your drink carrying it to your seat. So you hurry back to the car and hope you can make it through the drive thru process. So much for social anxiety and a trip to the fast food market!

This scenario could be multiplied over and over with numerous situations: having a job interview; attending church; meeting new neighbors; shopping for clothes; getting your driver’s license. The big stuff, like knowing all the answers; being able to sing; doing the job right, choosing great clothes; you are great at those things, but you can’t handle dealing with the people. People, concentrating on you (or so you imagine), make you nervous; the anxiety is just too overwhelming. The sad part is that social anxiety symptoms extend into most social functions in practically every avenue of life. Equally sad is that you and your fellow sufferers are fully aware that your thoughts are irrational because people are not actually concentrating on you but you feel that they are.

However, the most discouraging part to the one suffering with this disorder must be that high percentage of misdiagnosis: realizing that the treatment is geared to an erroneous diagnosis; the time and effort are for naught; so more havoc has been unleashed into your life. It would benefit the individual struggling with social anxiety, which is not a sporadic happening but a daily reality of your life, to make sure the professional you select for your treatment is well-versed in the differences between the various anxiety/panic disorders. It is not long-term counseling sessions you are looking for, it is a program focused on the root of the social phobia/anxiety disorder.

In researching the various approaches for treatment, pay particular attention to the ones offering long-lasting, permanent relief from this debilitating social anxiety disorder in contrast to other programs which offer ways to manage the anxiety/phobia or ways to cope with it. So we urge you to have renewed hope; and we encourage you to take the initiative, commit to persevering in your chosen treatment, and return to the euphoria of a world free from social anxiety.

If you are just interested in the subject or especially if you are a victim of Panic Anxiety Attacks you need to learn more about Panic Away; so please don’t wait any longer; go right on over and visit http://panicaway-reviewed.com a website which reviews the Panic Away product and presents the viewers with valuable information, advice and resources on the subject of anxiety, fears, phobias and the panic away one step product.

Backup Tapes Can Help Your Case

Backup tapes are important. Aside from the fact that backup tapes can save a company’s data in the event of a software failure, hard drive failure, or a database corruption… backing up a company’s data on a regular basis should be a part of every IT department’s disaster recovery plan.

As part of that plan, IT departments should test and validate that the backups are in fact backing up data and is able to be restored. Most companies assume that once the backup is running everything will be safe. However, not many IT departments routinely check the error logs to discover problems. And only when a disaster occurs do they realized that the scheduled backups have not been collecting all of the data.

From an IT point of view, the above is one of the hurdles they deal with on a daily basis. From a legal point of view, those backup tapes are even more valuable. Those tapes represent a snapshot in time for that company.

In a recent case, AAB Joint Venture v. United States, 2007 WL 646157 (Fed. Cl. Feb. 28, 2007), the court heard an argument regarding the a period of time (data) for which that data was not available. The defendant claimed that it had provided all e-mails related to the case. However, the court was not persuaded by defendant’s arguments, and agreed that defendant’s overall production of emails had been far from adequate. The court also said that, while cost was an issue for the court to consider in addressing a motion to compel, it was not the only consideration. The court continued with the following statement:

Here, because the Court finds that defendant had a duty to preserve evidence, as set forth below, the Court cannot relieve Defendant of its duty to produce those documents merely because Defendant has chosen a means to preserve the evidence which makes ultimate production of relevant documents expensive. Accordingly, the Court concludes that Defendant has not adequately responded to Plaintiff’s requests for production of electronic documents and that supplementation of its response to Plaintiff’s requests is necessary.

As the field of Computer Forensics and E-Discovery becomes more mainstream in litigation, more companies may find they need to take a look at what exactly is in the disaster recovery plan for both data loss and litigation.

THE ROAD OF TRIALS SHOULD BE CALLED THE ROAD OF TRANSFORMATIONS

The Road of Trials should be known as the Road of Transformations. That is the purpose of the Trials - to incrementally transform the Hero from an Old Self to a New Self; to dissolve away the Old Self. This is a deeper transformation than that which occurs during the First Threshold.

This is a huge and often favourite part of many stories and is achieved using distinct and focused techniques and processes - knowing the patterns that this stage can follow makes writing successful stories a whole lot easier. Patterns include:

Pulling away from the Old Self. In An Officer and a Gentleman (1983), Zach accepts Paula as his girlfriend - he’s never had a girl before.

Demonstrating suitability to the New World and the New Self. In City Slickers (1991), Mitch is at home around the campfire and takes on Curly - someone whom he’s afraid of.

Demonstrating deep Transformation. In The Godfather (1972), Michael decides to marry Apollonia - a Sicilian marriage was something he would not have considered previously.

For anyone who spends any time wading in and across rivers and streams in search of fish, wading tips are never a bad idea. Tips always help, if for no other reason than a quick refresher. What we’re all trying to avoid is taking that wet and wild ride down a river, because of a stupid wading mistake. I’ve had this happen, and few things ruin a fishing trip like soaking yourself to the bone. Springtime is upon us and in many parts of the country this means that rivers and streams are running much higher than they normally would. And when the water is running higher and faster than normal, this is the time mistakes are made.

The first tip to remember is if the water looks too high and fast to cross, don’t try it. Listen to your instincts. If you feel crossing the river will be a stretch, just sit it out. Better safe than sorry. I’m sure you’ve heard that piece of advice before. Another great tip in high and fast water (if you feel you must cross) is to use a wading pole. You can buy a wading pole and carry it with you while fishing or you can do what I do and find a nice stick along the bank when I need a wading pole. As long as the stick is sturdy and comes up to your chest, you’ll be in good shape. Having a pole to put weight on in high and fast water can literally save you from falling.

Another great wading tip is to always keep your feet in contact with the bottom. This may sound obvious, but it’s none the less true. You always want to make a conscious effort to keep your feet in contact with the bottom, especially in high, fast water. The best way to accomplish this is to “slide”, rather than step. By sliding your feet, they are always in contact with the bottom. The big problems arise when flowing water gets under your feet. His is obviously when waders get swept off of their feet, and when waders get swept off of their feet, that’s when they get wet.

The final wading tip that I have for this article is to keep your eyes on where you want to go, rather than the water. You should be taking your time enough to be able to feel the bottom with your feet, rather than having to look. Keeping your eyes on the place you want to end up eliminates the distortion that a flowing river can cause to persons’ eyes. These tips should help you avoid taking that wet and wild ride alluded to earlier. The most important tip it to trust your instincts when it comes to wading across high fast water. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t try it.

THE MYTH OF CONFLICT - FOCUS ON TRANSFORMATION AND TRANSMOGRIFICATION

A pervasive myth argues that the essence of story is conflict. This is extremely misleading.

The essence of all successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters is Transformation, which occurs by taking the Hero on a Journey. It is the Journey that gives the Hero the capacity to conquer challenges that were previously unconquerable. It is the New Self that is able to conquer challenges that the Old Self could not.

Transformation is psychological and physical (Transmogrification: to change in appearance or form).

Sometimes the Transmogrification is not obvious. But if it is not there literally, then it is there symbolically - blood, the colour red and physical wounds are all symbolic references to it. A good literal example is The Godfather (1972): Capt. McCluskey punches Michael in the face. Later, when the damage has been long repaired, it is noted that Michael looks different (better).

The psychological Transformation is often more obvious: In Annie Hall (1977), Annie’s attitudes, beliefs and behaviour change: from dependent and shy in New York to independent and confident in Los Angeles.

LOSING A TANGIBLE REPRESENTATION OF THE OLD WORLD AND OLD SELF

During the Hero’s Journey and Transformation, representations of the Old World and Old Self are gradually lost. The representation of the Old World (the physical journey) is usually a tangible, physical thing - often clothing or emotional attachments. The representation of the Old Self (the psychological journey) is often an attitude, belief or behaviour.

In Elizabethtown (2005), Drew loses Ellen.

In An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Zack hides his tattoo and we don’t see his bike until he has changed. Emilio has his head shaved.

In Star Wars (1977), Luke leaves behind his speeder on Tatooine and his Old Clothes once he has returned from the Death Star.

In Dances with Wolves (1990), John Dunbar slowly loses his US army uniform and works his way into the Sioux uniform.

In The Godfather (1972), Michael begins the story wearing army attire end ends it wearing dark suits.
