Your Computer Security Checklist - Do This Daily

Always practice safe surfing! Here is a computer checklist to help keep you safe online. Print it out and stick it on the wall beside your computer. To begin with, I assume you have an anti-virus program, a firewall and 2 anti-spyware programs, at least.

Why 2 anti-spyware applications? Often one program will find what the other misses. You should also have a filter/blocker program, that keeps this stuff out of your computer in the first place.

Daily:

1. As soon as you turn on your computer for the day, and before you start surfing the Internet, update your anti-virus program, or check that it updates itself automatically.

2. When you have finished surfing for the day, or after installing new software, run one of your anti-spyware programs. The next day, run the other one. Alternate them, to catch all possible malware.

3. Carefully and fully read every End User License Agreement (EULA). If you see something like “The vendor/publisher may install third party software” hit the delete button (hard!) or cancel the download. Or at least run all your security scans after installation.

Weekly:

1. Once a week, update your anti-spyware programs, as well as Windows. If you have kids who surf the Net and play games online, do it more often.

2. Watch for updates to your firewall and HOSTS file (see below). These are infrequent, so check your email, or check in the programs to see if they are up to date.

3. Get a custom HOSTS file. Go to your favorite search engine to find one. Take the time to read and understand what it is and does. If you have never used one before, it may seem complicated at first. It really is not.

Viruses have gotten so sophisticated lately that they can use the HOSTS file to prevent your anti-virus software from updating itself. To avoid this, about once a month you should open your HOSTS file, and check to make sure your anti-virus program is NOT listed there.

If it is, your computer could be infected with a virus. Delete that line in the HOSTS file, and run all your security scans immediately.

Do not open unsolicited email or unexpected attachments, avoid phishing scams and public computers, try not to download anything from the web, change your passwords every couple of months, back up important files, do not ignore warnings and alerts from your security programs and use Guest and Limited accounts for other users on your computer.

Finally, stay alert and use common sense on the Web. Even the best security programs will not protect you unless you (and your kids!) think before you click!

I recently spoke with a franchise company that provides cleaning services. This enterprise has been in business for about 18 months. The company has ten employees, 115 clients and produces revenue of over $12,000 per month. Unfortunately, the company advertising expenses total of $5,000 every month! As a result, company profit only totals a little under ten percent. The owner wants to increase its client base and attract and retain my best employees.

This reminds me of the old saying: “That you have to spend money to make money.” Do entrepreneurs have to spend money to make money?

Well, some believe that there are only two ways to increase your profits. Either you reduce your expenses or increase your sales! Believe it or not, you could do both! Some entrepreneurs think that you only have one choice —- spend money! Most new owners make the same mistake when starting a business. They think that the best way to build a business is to spend money! They think that to make money, you must spend money! They are wrong!

Thinking that it is an investment, some people spend a lot of money in the lead generation activities. Some owners will buy a yellow pages ad. Others will purchase an ad in the living section of the local newspaper. Also, you will discover that some people will buy a direct-mail list of 1000 prospects or post a gigantic billboard over a major highway!

For example, I know of one business that spent $ 20,000 on one direct-mail campaign! They are still waiting by the phone for all the excited new prospects to call them and hand over their hard earned money! It did not happen! Another example is a local restaurant that spends $2,000 each month for a billboard! Business has improved and the owner is thrilled. But, when I asked her to prove that her sales came from the billboard ad, she could not!

Always test and measure your advertising efforts, processes, procedures, and systems. Always verify your results! Before spending a lot of money, make sure that it is a smart investment of your dollars and not a wasted expense!

As for your situation, advertising can produce amazing results and great revenue and profits — for the ADVERTISER! Unfortunately, the dollars that you spend in advertising, you will never see again! That goes into the advertiser’s pockets and not your own! There is a major change happening in America. Why do you think that local newspapers and the major broadcast channels are losing money and firing employees? Many companies are not seeing a positive return on investment (ROI) using traditional methods.

They are getting wiser with their dollars. You should too! Companies that have satisfied clients and customers, should recognize what a valuable asset that this can be! That’s GOLD! Start there! Chances are that your satisfied clients know other prospects that you could convert to your service! That is where you should invest your money! Get closer to your clients! What is a referral worth to you? How many referrals did you get last month? What is your referral system? Learn to ask for referrals!

Stop wasting your dollars on advertising! Begin to think of other ways to attract the right clients and customers!

Get profitable! Be more productive and efficient! Employees will stay with a successful company. Retention will increase and employee satisfaction will improve! People will leave their existing jobs and look for better opportunity with your company.

As you generate more dollars, you will have enough money to invest in your employees! This could result in offering health insurance, company training, retirement plan etc. Investing in your employees will produce a better return on your investment. This will have a positive impact on company and likely result in better employee retention and satisfaction. Save money and invest in your company! Do not give it away!

Do you have make spend money to make money? No! Business owners just have to become wiser with their money! That is the bottom line!

Writing Effective Articles - Article Writing Basics

Writing articles can scare all but the bravest of writers. Writing them effectively isn’t that hard; it just requires practice.

The first step is research. You need to know your subject inside and out; the more familiar the topic, the easier it will be to write. Also, the more familiar you are with the topic, the less nervous you will be when you start writing it. After all, you have the answers, and not having answers is the biggest cause of fear.

Then you write the thing. Figure out a method that works best for you; some people need absolute quiet, others need some noise. Don’t be afraid to check sources while you write; accuracy is part of writing an effective article. Also, don’t be afraid to take time off; even if the article is short, sometimes taking a break is a good thing.

You will need to deal with writer’s block; it’s just part of the process. The easiest way to deal with it is to work on something different for a while. Another way is to just get away from it for a while. Just remember to come back to it. You can also just work through it; the blockage may be how you are approaching it, and you need to do it in order to find the best way to approach it.

Finally, put it aside for a few hours. When you come back to it, read it to see if it makes sense. Don’t be annoyed if you need to re-write it completely; it happens to even the most professional writers, so it’s bound to happen to you.

Above all: Continue writing. More than anything else, that will help you write effective articles.

Do you often feel frustrated, misunderstood, burned out, forgotten, agitated, restless, stressed out or angry? Learning patience can help you feel satisfaction, understood, accomplished, remembered, calm, peaceful, relaxed and happy. Here are 10 things you can do (or begin) now to flex your patience muscle, no matter how puny you think it is:

1. Determine the difference between the things you control, the things you can influence and the things over which you have no control or influence. Spend the bulk of your time and attention on the things which you control. This is where you can make the biggest difference. Spend your remaining time and attention on the things you can influence, knowing things may or may not go your way. Let go of the things over which you have no control or influence as any time or attention spent on these is ineffective and wasted.

2. Take life one day at a time. Treat each day as a treasured gift, because that is exactly what it is! Yesterday is done and tomorrow has not yet arrived, so make the most of today because it is all you have to work with anyway.

3. Accept that you are human. We are growing, learning and changing all the time. As humans, we make mistakes. Get over it and get on with life.

4. Forgive yourself for your mistakes, weaknesses and imperfections. Review them, learn from them, forgive yourself and move on.

5. Reframe your world view. Instead of beating yourself up over past mistakes, accept them as part of who you are today. Life is about progress, not perfection.

6. Make plans, including Plan B. Plan your life and follow your plan, but have a Plan B ready in case things do not go the way you expect. Life throws us curve balls all the time, so be ready for them.

7. Set big goals and plan baby steps. You can accomplish any goal by breaking it down into doable steps which keep you motivated along the way. Celebrate each time you complete a step toward your goal.

8. Confront your fears about not reaching your goals. Remember that the world was not created in one day. The tallest trees start out as little seeds and take years to grow into their strength and beauty. Every step you take brings you closer to the results you desire.

9. Let go of worry. Worrying about tomorrow saps your energy and strength today. Instead, use that energy to work toward your goals.

10. Become your own best friend. You are the only person you will live with your entire life, so get to know yourself well and treat yourself as the valuable person you are.

Use these steps a part of your personal growth plan and watch peace, joy and happiness grow in your life.

Tips on Purchasing a Heavy Duty Mobility Scooter

If you’ve recently decided to purchase a mobility scooter, you may be confused about all of the choices and models that are available. You can choose either gas or electric power, 3 or 4 wheels, and compact or lightweight models. Because of its comfort and stability, if you are looking for a long-term mobility solution, than a heavy duty mobility scooter may be the choice for you.

Heavy duty scooters are classified as such primarily because they have a heavier capacity than a regular scooter. Most scooters will have a weight capacity of 200-300 lbs, but heavy duty mobility scooters will carry an average of 300-500 lbs. The weight capacity of the scooter should be one of your first considerations when narrowing down the type and model of the scooter. If you are in doubt, its better to go up to the next capacity so you’ll be comfortable.

Many models of heavy duty scooters are the 4 wheel models, although some 3 wheels are classified as heavy duty as well. The 4 wheel models usually offer more stability and support, and while storage may be an issue, if you do have plenty of storage room, than this type of scooter will probably be a good fit.

One of the primary considerations when purchasing a scooter is feelings of comfort. Heavy duty models usually have large seats and better suspension than more lightweight models. If you suffer from arthritis or other types of ailments, you will want to make sure your scooter offers a comfortable ride for your physical condition, and a heavy duty scooter will usually provide more support.

Popular heavy duty mobility scooter models include Pride and Shoprider, although there are many others to choose from. The price range is usually a bit more than on a standard mobility scooter, but you can still get a good deal if you comparison shop. Many companies have various scooter models available online, in fact, you can often get a discount if you purchase directly online from the company. Medicare may also pay part or all of the scooter bill, and the scooter dealerships can usually help see if you qualify, and handle the medicare billing. However, because comfort and capacity is an important consideration, you should test-drive a scooter before you purchase, if at all possible.

Purchasing a mobility scooter is a large decision, and can positively change the quality of your life. Once you experience the mobility and comfort of a scooter, you may wonder why you waited so long! While the heavy duty mobility scooter models may not be for everyone, they offer more comfort and durability than some of the smaller models, and they are a must if you need one that handles increased capacity.

One of the great things about the Internet is that all of a sudden, you can find an expert on just about anything, no matter how obscure. As a result of this, people are looking for experts in order to write articles. It has even hit the point that experts now need to know how to market themselves

There are some basic techniques anyone can use. The first is to have a blog or site where you write about what it is that you are an expert in. Not only do you show that you are an expert, but that you can write. This should be considered a vital first step. And take advantage of your professional contacts; if you are someone who truly is considered an expert in your field, then others will try to get you write about your background, and that can help get jobs as well.

You also need to find a site that is looking for your expertise. Then can involve an intensive web search, but you need to look for somewhere to write in order to get paid for writing. It may take a while, but you should find the site eventually. You should also be aware that it can be the most annoying step; even if you are the biggest expert in your field, you may have a problem establishing a reputation in at the respective site (after all, you are new to the site, and so have a lack of reputation to deal with).

Don’t forget to keep studying; you need to take writing classes, as well as keep abreast of your field. If you can get better at writing, it will definitely help your odds of being able to write about your topic; too many people forget that you need to be an expert in not just your field, but need to be able to write about it as well.

Sacramento Real Estate - February 2007

February results for the Sacramento real estate market was better than January but prices continue to slide. Looking at the four counties that make up our local Sacramento market, Placer, Sacramento, El Dorado and Yolo, we see price declines in each compared to last year.

In Sacramento County the February sales volume of existing and new homes including condos was 1,222. This is slight increase from January when we had sales volume of 1,178 but the median price paid was down 6.98 percent from a year ago to $356.250. The good news for sellers in Sacramento Counties is the median sales price increased month-over-month. In January the median was $349,000.

In Placer County, DataQuick News, reports that 494 homes and condos were sold during the month February with a median price of $440,000. Compared to Februarys 2006 when the median price paid was $465,000 this is a drop of 5.38 percent. The good news in Placer County is sales volume exceeded the January results by almost 20 percent. The larger communities in the county, Roseville, Lincoln and Rocklin all had volume increases from the previous month but still have price declines year-over-year. In Roseville there were 195 homes and condos sold with a median price of $420,000 which is up from $380,000 and only off by .36 percent from a year ago. In Lincoln where 122 sales were recorded with a median price of $434,000 we find this was an increase from the reported January median of $410,000 but down 9.77 percent from last year. Finally, Rocklin had 73 sales during February which is up from 60 in January but the median of $434,000 (same as Lincoln) shows a double digit decline of 13.2 percent from a year ago. The reported January median sales price was $449,000 in Rocklin which was a 6 percent increase in the year before.

In El Dorado and Yolo counties the reported February sales were 153 and 106 respectively. The median sales price in El Dorado was 480,000 and is only off 1.34 percent from the previous year. The community with the largest number of sales was El Dorado Hills where 64 homes were sold in February with a median price of $592,000 which is a drop of 7.4 percent from last year. In Yolo County the reported median was $400,500 down, 10 percent from a year ago. Almost 50 percent of the Yolo County sales volume came from West Sacramento where 51 homes were sold in February with a median price of $363,000. For all communities in the Sacramento area the price decline year-over-year was one of the highest with a drop in the median price of 24.53 percent.

Lists are a fact of successful lives; your business is no exception. Your contacts are your life when it comes to running a business; your customer list is your lifeblood.

Building a successful list can be as hard or as easy as you want it. The hard way is to e-mail as many people as you can and hope that they will respond. This can be both expensive (as some companies sell their lists) and time-consuming (finding an e-mail company that will allow you to spam or building a mail server just so you can do so can take some serious time), but is nonetheless a good beginning step.

The easiest way is to host a discussion forum. It takes minimal knowledge of coding, and templates are readily available. If nothing else, it always gives the impression that you care about customer service. But, as users are required to use e-mail addresses it gives you a chance to gather those e-mail addresses so you can mail them later.

Also, some merchandise shops also allow you to send out newsletters so that customers can keep up with new merchandise. Allow visitors to your site to sign up for a newsletter, and your lists should grow quickly. Also, you can get information regarding your site to your visitors quickly.

By combining these techniques, you should be able to quickly to create lists that will allow your business to grow. As your lists grow, so should your business, hopefully to where you don’t need those lists as much and can worry about just making the best site you can for your business.

The benefits of exercise for senior citizens can be truly life changing. Let
me share with you the story of an eighty-eight year old lady named
Endora. Endora is a competitive weightlifter. She started lifting weights
at age seventy-nine. Her story was recently featured on the cable news
network CNN.

Then there is the story of former Mr. America, Pax Beale. Pax is now
seventy-seven years old and still pumps the iron along with his beautiful
wife Sophie. Sophie is a knockout and almost sixty.
Finally, there is the story of a man that worked out regularly all
throughout his life. He was shot at age seventy and came close to losing
his life. For the next eight years he held the most demanding job in the
world. As you have probably guessed, that man was Ronald Reagan.
What can we learn from these three inspiring stories? All three stories
showcase the benefits of exercise for seniors. It is true that you and I may
never become a competitive bodybuilder, a Mr. America, or the
President of the United States.

Still, we can gain inspiration from the examples shown by these three
senior citizens. It is an acknowledged fact that exercise is of great benefit
to us as we become older. Seniors can enjoy the positive effects of many
different types of exercises.
Let me pause for a word of caution. Every senior is unique. While it
might be perfectly fine for you to engage in a strenuous strength building
or aerobic program, the same program could prove disastrous to someone
else.

It is especially important for seniors to check with their doctors and
other healthcare providers before embarking on a workout program.
With that said, here are some great ways to exercise if you are a senior.
As a healthy senior, you can get great results exercising with weights or
resistance bands. Building muscle mass is very important for senior
citizens. Studies show that we begin to lose muscle mass in our twenties
unless we counteract the effect. Strength training is a great way to halt
and reverse the process of losing muscle mass.

Exercise aerobically to protect your heart and cardiovascular system. Not
only can proper aerobic exercise benefit your cardiovascular system, it
can also assist you in losing a few pounds.
Join a yoga class for your overall health. Yoga benefits you in so many
ways. It builds strength, increases your flexibility, and improves your
cardiovascular and immune systems. The benefits of yoga exercise for
seniors are almost boundless.
Walking is a great low impact exercise for many seniors. A brisk walk
can help your heart, tone your muscles, and relieve stress. Walking
requires very little equipment. Just get a good pair of shoes and you are
all set.

If you have physical or medical issues that prevent you from exercising
more vigorously, there are exercise programs that you can perform from a
chair or wheelchair. There is likely a type of exercise that can help you
to feel better and become stronger.
The benefits of exercise for seniors are well worth the effort. It is crucial
that you choose the type of exercise that is right for you. Choose a
method of exercise that matches your ability and outlook on life. Then get
out there and enjoy a better quality of life!

Blog this. Blog that. It seems like everyone these days pens a blog and point of view about everything. Opinions about the usefulness of blogs sit on both sides of the fence. Some might argue that this isn’t a good thing; just because someone has a venue to extol their opinions doesn’t automatically make them an expert. While proponents of blogs counter saying freedom of speech is always a positive thing or blogs allow for the free exchange of ideas to pass between people more easily and freely.

I believe that in the world of politics, an abundance of blogs offers nothing but clear benefits to the American public. It seems like every other poll conducted shows that the American public is often times clueless about current events. Many of these issues affect their everyday lives yet they still don’t seem to know or care. Political blogs gives these people an avenue to possibly read up on some of these topics.

If you’re a big fan of reading the politically themed stories and opinion pieces found in news magazines such as Newsweek, The New Yorker, or U.S. News, then perhaps you should jump online and immerse yourself into the political opinion community. Here is a brief run-down on some of the most viewed political blogs of 2006 with a brief description on each:

Andrew Sullivan’s Daily Dish - Sullivan’s blog is characterized by passionate argumentation and a willingness to admit doubts and entertain changes of mind. The blog’s core principles have been fiscal conservatism, limited government, and libertarianism on social issues but is an opponent of government involvement with respect to sexual and consensual matters between adults such as the use of marijuana or gay marriage.

Instapundit - Instapundit is sometimes considered a “war-blog” because of its frequent supportive coverage of America’s War on Terrorism and war in Iraq. Other common topics discussed are technology (such as nanotechnology, space exploration, and digital photography), individual liberty, domestic politics, the media, and the blogosphere as a social phenomenon.

James Lileks - Lileks is known for his dry humor and an engaging style of older journal style of writing. He often covers many topics in his personal life, to politics from a conservative viewpoint, to cultural points of interest ranging from art and architecture to movies and music.

Little Green Footballs - a war-blog run by Charles Johnson that promotes a very active discussion of the American War on Terror and the Arab-Israeli conflict in the a post 9/11 world. It is perhaps best known for playing a key role in exposing the forged Killian documents about President Bush, which led to the resignation of CBS’ Dan Rather.

Daily Kos - Daily Kos offers disseminating news and opinion from a largely liberal, progressive point-of-view. It also acts as a discussion forum and group blog for a variety of net-roots activists, whose efforts are primarily directed toward influencing and strengthening the Democratic Party. It is financially sustained by advertising, mostly for activist causes, media, and political candidates.

There is an almost never-ending assortment of political blogs for you to read. Some cover general topics such as Liberal vs. Conservative or Democrat vs. Republican while other authors try to be more specific to a topic or belief that is closer to their heart. No matter the subject, there is more than likely someone like you writing a blog on it.
