Lawn Landscaping

When you walk around your neighborhood, do you find that everyone else has a lush, green lawn, whereas your own lawn has patches of dead grass, and most of it is yellowish and unattractive anyway! It’s time to do some work to bring your lawn back to health.

Just because you live in the same geographic area as your neighbors doesn’t mean that your soil is necessarily the same as theirs. So the first thing you should do is some soil tests, to find out what the pH balance (”power of Hydrogen”) of the soil is. If your soil is too alkaline, or too acidic, your grass and flowers will not grow well.

If your soil is not balanced properly, there’s no need to despair. Add lime (for example calcic limestone) to the soil if it is too acidic, and add iron sulfate to your soil to correct alkaline soil. You’ll want to consult with a gardening professional to know exactly how of this material you should add.

What type of soil have you? If you’ve got soil with too much clay, you’re going to have drainage problems - because clay retains water practically forever, which is bad. Sandy soil, on the other hand, dries out too quickly. These problems can be solved by adding peat moss or compost.

But let’s say your soil is just right for growing lush green grass. Then what’s the problem?

Does your lawn receive enough sun?
If your lawn is scattered with lots of large trees, it’s quite possible that their foliage prevents enough sunlight from getting through to your lawn. Consider thinning out the branches. And if you have trouble with your grass dying right underneath your trees, try using groundcover instead, although there are other solutions you can try.

Does your lawn receive enough water? Or too much?
Water’s water at all times, but it doesn’t behave the same at all times. The heat of the sun evaporates water, of course, so it is best to water in the early morning, or late at night. Never water during the heat of the day. And never water your lawn too much - that’s as bad as watering it too little.

Do you water the entire lawn fairly, or do you cheat? Do some spots get more water than others? It’s important that your entire lawn be watered equally. If you want to take the human element out of the equation, you can always install an automatic sprinkling system in your yard. But that requires digging up sections of the lawn in order to bury the hoses, and those sprinkler heads can play havoc when you’re trying to mow. Still, it’s something to consider.

The patter of tiny feet
If you have a lot of kids, or teens, for that matter, playing active games on your lawn such as touch football or catch, they’re going to be running around compressing and compacting the soil, which drives out the oxygen plants need to survive. The solution to this can be to aerate your lawn - use a device that punches holes in the soil to loosen it. Aerate your lawn at least once a year.

Does your lawn get mowed properly?
If you don’t like to mow the lawn (and who does?) you may decide to solve the problem by mowing it as short as possible, so that it takes a while for it to grow out before you have to mow again. But this actually stresses out the grass, and is not at all good for it. Neither is letting your grass grow too long. Apart from aesthetic considerations, it causes problems with the amount of water and sunlight that reaches the soil.

Ever heard of thatch? It’s the dead grass and other material that forms a layer on the soil below the grass itself. This chokes out new growth. Get a de-thatching rake and take care of it.

What kind of grass do you have?
If you’ve implemented all these solutions and your lawn still doesn’t look as nice as your neighbor’s, it may be something as simple as the kind of grass you have. Grass comes in different shades of green, from dark green to yellow. Some grass is more resilient to pounding feet than others, and to extremes of heat and cold.

By considering these elements, you’ll find that your lawn will soon be the smooth, velvet carpet of green you always envisioned.

Grass Types - As Many As Flowers

Grass Is As Grass Does

When you drive past homes in your car, you may enjoy looking out at the yards and seeing the vast expanses of lush green grass, interspersed with the occasional flower or vegetable garden. A rock or water garden with an appropriate statue might catch your eye. While you may know the names of every flower that you see, can you say the same about the grass?

Grass isn’t just “grass.” There are almost as many types of grass as there are types of flowers, and like flowers you need to choose the appropriate grass for your lawn. Grass that you’re going to use for your lawn should, really, be called lawn grass, to differentiate it from other types of grasses.

Before choosing your lawn grass, you need to know as much about the lawn as possible. Of what is the soil composed? Clay, loam, sand? You’ll want just the right proportion of these materials to ensure the best growing environment for your new grass. And that goes for the pH balance as well - the level of acidity or alkalinity in your soil.

Are there a lot of trees in your yard, with branches spread wide? This can interfere with the amount of sunlight that manages to filter down onto your lawn and feed your grass. If you want to keep those trees (and if you have trees on your lawn that are over a hundred years old, there’s a lot of history there) than you’ll want a type of grass that doesn’t need a lot of sunlight.

If your area gets a lot of rain, you’ll want a type of grass that loves all that wet stuff. If your area is lucky to get a few inches of rain a year, you’ll want a different type of grass.

Then there’s the color. Grass color varies widely, from dark greens to light yellows. It’s nice to be able to vary the color of your lawn - but it might get annoying if you have vast amounts of dark green with patches of yellow intermixed.

So, what types of lawn grasses are there?

For grass that grows quickly in cool climates, you’ll want to consider the grass families such as bluegrass, bentgrass (usually used for golf courses), ryegrasses (used at the Wimbledon tennis courts) , fescues (used for bowling greens) and Grama grass (praire grass, good for erosion control). They each have their own particular properties, so you’ll want to investigate them all, either on the web or by talking to a gardening professional in your area.

For grass that grows quickly in warmer climates, consider zoysiagrass, bermudagrass (great for drought tolerance), St. Augustine Grass, bahiagrass (great in Florida because it tolerates salt well), centipedegrass, carpetgrass or buffalograss

You can research all these types of grasses on the web, and it makes for fascinating reading. But the best way to find out what kind of lawn grass is right for your area is to consult a garden professional near your home.

Volkswagen Cars Named Finalists for Ad Awards

The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) is just around the corner and so is the IAG Research Awards. The awarding body gives distinction to automobile manufacturers that have created an ad campaign that effectively reaches their target audience.

The winners in the five categories will be announced at the opening press breakfast at the Javits Center in New York City where the country’s largest motor show will be held. The finalists for the five categories have already been announced and two Volkswagen ad campaigns for their cars were announced as finalists for the award.

The Volkswagen Jetta’s “Dance” ad campaign and the Volkswagen Passat’s “Safe Happens” ad are finalists for the “Most Effective Overall Ad” category. Aside from that, the Passat wagon is also a finalist for the “Most Effective Established Nameplate Launch Campaign” category. The finalists were chosen on the basis of their effectiveness in reaching their target viewers.

Creativity and strategic media placement are some of the criterion set by IAG Research in choosing the finalists and, finally, the winners in the five categories came into being. The determination of the winner is also based on the response of more than 1.5 million viewers who has been tapped by IAG Research to respond to a survey that they conducted.

Kurt Schneider, the General Manager of Creative Content for Volkswagen of America Inc., has this to say about their ad campaigns’ being finalists for the awards: “We are excited about being recognized by IAG. This research confirms the true effectiveness of these messages in connecting with consumers and increasing consideration for the brand.”

The VW Jetta, the center of the “Dance” ad campaign, is the top selling vehicle for Volkswagen in the U.S. market. Its strong selling point is the number of comfort and convenience features it has. The Jetta is equipped with adaptive cruise control as well as traction control allowing drivers to have complete control of the vehicle. It has a CD player and air conditioning for the comfort of the vehicle’s occupants.

As far as the ride is concerned, the Jetta is one of the best in its class, thanks to its four-wheel independent suspension system. Volkswagen gives the Jetta’s MSRP starting at $16,490 for the base model.

The VW Passat sedan on the other hand focuses on it safety features although it also offers good comfort and convenience features like the Jetta. Its safety features includes a full lineup of six airbags which covers the entire interior area of the vehicle. This vehicle can adequately protect its occupants in instances where highly efficient href="http://www.activebrakesdirect.com/ebcgreenstuff.html" title="EBC greenstuff">EBC greenstuff brake pads are not enough to avoid accidents.

Aside from being comfortable and safe, the VW Passat also offers good fuel efficiency, thanks to its engine. Its 2.0T model is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder featuring direct-injection delivery technology.

The Deere Company, more familiarly known as John Deere, is one of the largest and most successful manufacturers of farming equipment in the world. The color scheme of green and yellow immediately identifies a John Deere tractor, even if its trademark design of a leaping deer were not just as identifiable.

In 1837, John Deere was a blacksmith in Grand Detour, Illinois. The farmers in the area were having a great deal of difficulty in tilling the tough, prairie soil - much of it sticky clay - with their cast iron plows. Something better was needed. Deere perfected the self-scouring steel plow (constructed from highly polished steel and with a a correctly shaped moldboard). So successful was this new plow that Deere was able to go into partnership with another businessman in 1843 to speed up production. By 1848 he’d moved his company to the transportation hub that was Moline, Illinois (located on the banks of the Mississippi River) and had produced 10,000 plows.

Up until that time, a farmer requested a plow and the blacksmith made it to order. Deere manufactured several plows at one time, so that the farmer could come in, look around and see what he wanted, and then buy it then and there. That was the kind of innovation that started the John Deere company on its long, successful road.

It wasn’t until 1868 that the business was named the John Deere Company. Up until that time Deere had had many partners, but he always stressed that only quality products would come out of his company. Deere’s son Charles became director of the company and under his aegis it became even more and more successful.

It was in 1912 that John Deere moved into the tractor business - that branch for which they are best known today. Over 90 years later they are still going strong. The company employs around 50,000 people in many countries, including the United States and Turkey, Canada, the United Kingdom, China, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, India, Poland, and Mexico. Their main business headquarters are still located in Moline, Illinois.

The Deere family is no longer connected to the John Deere company - which is huge with many subsidiaries including the AGRIS Corporation (John Deere Agri Services), John Deere Landscapes (a supplier of landscaping plants, materials, and irrigation equipment) and even
NavCom Technology, Inc. (Precision positioning systems and intelligent mobile equipment technologies) to name a few.

As with all major companies, John Deere has a website which provides a history of the company, a search function to find the dealer nearest you, and a complete catalog of all their offerings, from residential to commercial equipment, from golf & turf tools to agricultural machines, to construction, forestry, and engine components. In other words, they’ll have a piece of machinery or equipment to meet your every need.

It would seem that the numbers of children diagnosed with autism is going up all the time. This might be because the higher functioning types of autism are just now being diagnosed and understood. Many children who were once labeled as shy and awkward are now being diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. The lower functioning types of autism are easier to spot, and they are often not hard to diagnose. A parent that knows more about the symtoms of autism in children will have an easier time deciding if their child needs evaluation or not.

Social Issues: One thing that seems to plague all children with autism is social awkwardness and problems interacting with peers. They don’t seem to be able to relate to anyone, have problems with eye contact, and tend to show signs of agitation rather easily. They also seem to prefer to play alone rather than rise to the challenge of making friends. They tend to show no emotional reaction to anything or anyone, and shy away from group activities.

Communicating: Those with autism might start out talking fine, but then regress later. Others have good communication skills. Some do not communicate with spoken words at all. Those with classic autism often use gestures rather than saying words, will repeat words and phrases that they do know, and often use odd phrases that rhyme over and over again.

Stimulus Response: One of the symptoms of autism is a lack of response to many things that others respond to right away. This is something that is often very obvious. They either respond in an inappropriate manner or not at all. Some will not respond to noises or stimulus in any way, which scares parents. Others might be overly sensitive to touch, sound, and even the feeling of clothing on their skin. They may also get lost in patterns and explore with rubbing and licking.

Atypical Behavior: Another of the common symptoms of autism in children is problematic behavior. This might include being completely passive, or being extremely and sometimes violently aggressive. These children often have tantrums. These tantrums might come with the slightest upset in normal routine. These children may be first diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder because they lack any type of attention span. They also demonstrate many repetitive movements, and seem to focus on one thing for a very long time.

Playtime: Though children with autism do play some, they often play on their own. The want to play with other children in many cases, but lack the social skills to maintain or even form friendships. This brings anxiety, and pushes them to play on their own where they feel safe. They may show repetition in play, and might be so focused on something that there seems to be nothing that will drag their attention away from what they are doing.

Though these symtoms of autism in children are often quite obvious, there are some children who hide these well, or function so well in most cases that one symptom might be mistakenly thought to be a different problem at first. If a parent suspects that there are any problems, and that they may have a child with autism, they want to get a diagnosis as quickly as possible. There are many great programs for children with autism. It is much easier on the parent, child, and entire family once a proper diagnosis can be reached.

Recently, I was asked by one of my VIP Platinum Mastermind Coaching Members what was one thing that changed my speaking income. Without hesitation I responded, ‘When I decided to take a chance and attend a marketing seminar, rather than a speaking seminar!’ I remember that moment like it was yesterday. There were a few things that concerned me.

1) The fact that the seminar was about how to market your business and that it wasn’t
specifically a speaker-related seminar. I remember other speakers telling me I was crazy
for choosing to attend this marketing seminar.

2)-The fact that I was going to spend more on the registration fee to attend this one marketing seminar than I spent on two, even three speaker-related seminars the previous year. And, I was attending a seminar where I didn’t know anyone else. It was me, all-alone attending a seminar in a strange (and uncomfortable) environment.

Looking back, that was the smartest, most-lucrative decision I’ve ever made and is one decision
that made me a very wealthy speaker. When I learned what top marketers knew and then simply
applied it to my speaking business, my income literally TRIPLE the next year. And, my income has
increased EVERY year since attending that first marketing seminar while the amount of time I
actually spend traveling, sitting in airports, and being away from home has decreased over the
years to where I now only spend about 10-20% of my time traveling to speaking engagements.
The majority of my business is now done in the city where I live.

Today, I invest (not spend) a minimum of $20,000-$30,000 each year on attending seminars, going through home study courses and participating in Mastermind Coaching Groups. I even attended a seminar last month that cost $10,000 to attend. If you think investing $20,000-$30,000 a year is a lot, then you must not be making the kind of big money that I want you to be making. And, there’s no reason why you aren’t making this kind of BIG MONEY so that investing $20,000-$30,000 a year in continuing education isn’t even a thought for you.

Here are 3 reasons why you MUST start attending more live MARKETING events immediately:

1) A New Way of Thinking and Acting:

When I was only attending speaker-related seminars, I thought like a speaker. When I began attending marketing-related seminars, I began thinking like a marketer. That is one of the first things I preach to the attendees at my Speaker Boot Camps (www.CollegeSpeakingSuccess.com)
and I continue to hammer it home to them all throughout the boot camp. Specifically. I say:

“You’re NOT in the speaking business.
You’re in the business of marketing your speaker services!”

Bottom line is this. If you want to become wealthy as a speaker, while working as little as possible, then you MUST think and act like a Master Marketer. Simply by attending marketing-related seminars, the thoughts and actions of Master Marketers that you are constantly around begin rubbing off on you.

2) Incredible Networking Opportunities:

Another one of my VIP Platinum Mastermind Coaching Members once asked me how it is that I got most of the big Internet marketers, top platform selling speakers and big marketers to market my College Speaking Success Boot Camp to their e-newsletter lists when they won’t give most people the time of day. It’s simple. I met all of them at some kind of marketing seminar over the years where they were either speaking or attending.

Prior to attending any seminar, I always make my ‘hit-list’ of people who are speaking and who may be attending that I want to ‘get-in’ with! Then I make sure to do two things: (1) Introduce myself in a memorable way; and (2) Instantly create TOMA (Top of Mind Awareness) so they will always remember me.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret that I haven’t shared with many people. There have been numerous seminars I’ve attended, for no other reason, than to personally meet some of the speakers or attendees who I knew would be there! That’s right! I call it my ‘Attend-To-Get-In’ strategy. I’m always willing to invest in the registration fee just to be in the same room certain people so I can meet and start a relationship with them. That’s what I mean when I say, ‘Think Like a Marketer, Not a Speaker!’

3) Big Money Marketers Show You How to Play Big:

The quote that has had more impact on my life than any other is Jim Rohn’s quote from years ago. Others have tried to claim it as their own, but it was stated by Jim over 20 years ago. Here it is:

“Statistically you will become the average and your income will
become the average of the five people you associate with most!”

I’ll never forget sitting there thinking, ‘Wow! If that’s true then what if I started associating with more than five who are all big money marketers!?!’ Surely their way of thinking and their money-making ideas would rub-off on me. So I made it my goal to associate with as many big money marketers as possible. And, it’s still a core focus that drives my business to this day!

One reason to attend marketing-related seminars to meet some of the guest speakers is because they are usually very accessible at these events. Especially if you invested in yourself by investing in their home study courses. I can’t tell you how many relationships I’ve started with these big money marketers by bumping into them in the lobby, gym, hallway and in the bar. Many deals for promoting my Speaker’s Boot Camps have been made while sitting and having a drink with them at the bar.

Bottom Line…

I’m amazed at how many speakers moan and complain about not making the kind of money they want to make, yet their not willing to do anything differently that’s suggested. Is it a bit frightening to venture outside of your comfort zone to learn more about marketing by attending marketing-related seminars rather than speaking-related seminars? Absolutely! But suck it up and just do it! Can it really make a difference in your income? No! It can make a HUGE difference!

It doesn’t matter how attractive your flowerbeds, vegetable garden, trees and statuary are. If the green grass between these items isn’t green, if there are dead spots, then your whole landscape will be affected.

So you must select your lawn grass carefully. Items you must consider are your climate, how you intend to use the lawn, the amount of time and money you want to spend on maintaining it, and which parts of your lawn are sunny, which shady, and which a combination of each. The pH balance of your soil is also a consideration.

Plant breeders have been working with grass for a hundred years to develop new strains to meet a wide range of lawn needs - you just need to find out what your needs are. And sometimes, lawns need more than one type of grass. Lawns in northern climates are more likely to need a mix of grasses than those in the south, just because of the colder weather and snow.

Some grasses grow in different seasons than do others. For example, the famous Kentucky bluegrass likes the weather to be cool and moist, and so grows quickly during spring and autumn. In the summer months, it’s practically dormant. Bermuda grass, on the other hand, grows well in the summertime but cannot deal with freezing temperatures.

Experts suggest that heavy traffic areas - where your kids play kickball or catch - need such hardy types as perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, or Bermuda grass. If you don’t want to be watering your grass on a regular basis, prairie grass, buffalo grass or blue grama grass is the choice to make.

Ornamental lawns, which will have no children to damage them, do quite well with Kentucky bluegrass. If you live near the coast with its salt water, fescue and St. Augustine grass are good choices as they tolerate salt well. These are also a good idea in those states where salt is used to cover the roads during winter.

Finally, if your lawn gets a mixture of sunshine and shade, the best thing to do is use a mixture of grasses suitable for each type. That way, if one grass fails, the other will still keep the lawn looking nice and attractive.

It’s important to read the labels when buying grass seed, so you know exactly what you’re getting. Keep an eye on germination rates, and make sure the seed is dated for use in the current year. If your garden center is offering bags of grass seed on discount because they’re over a year old…don’t risk it!

Your backyard consists of lush green grass, a few stately trees, and a flower garden. You enjoy it from your back deck, on which you have a set of wicker furniture and a patio table. But is your landscaping complete?

Landscape “accessories” can offer many unique complements that will really set off your yard. Consider your yard to be just another room of your house…only without a ceiling! Just as you have various knickknacks scattered around to give each room a homey feel, so you can scatter knickknacks around your yard as well.

Before doing so, give a thought to who uses the yard and for what purpose. If you have a lot of kids running around, you won’t want to have a lot of fragile stuff lying around where it can easily get broken…or even no-so-fragile stuff that can get run over and end up breaking the kid!

Large buildings - such as turning your deck into an enclosed sunroom, count as landscaping accessories. If you have a constant problem with insects ruining your outdoors picnics and barbecues, consider foiling them with an all-glass enclosed room. It will serve the purpose to keep out excessive heat, and rain, as well.

You can build a conservatory close to the house, or out in the yard, as well, depending on how big your yard is. There’s nothing quite like a conservatory to add elegance to a backyard, and give you a place of quiet retreat.

Just as you use sculpture and ornaments to accessorize the rooms in your house, so you can use them to accessorize your back yard. Of course you don’t want to stick a statue just anywhere - the ornamentation must fit in with the design of your landscaping and set if off, rather than call attention to itself.

Birdhouses, birdbaths and bird feeders are always a popular accessory, because they encourage our fair-feathered friends to pay us visits. However, be careful of what type of birdfeed you use. Certain birds only like certain types of feed - so if you want to attract cardinals you’d use one kind of feed, for example. Hummingbirds require a specially designed feeder to meet their needs. Birds make a colorful and volatile addition to your backyard, but you’ll want to place these accessories near your windows so that you can view them from inside.

If you’re of a nautical bent, pieces of driftwood can make interesting conversation pieces, as they are twisted by nature into the most interesting of shapes. Boulders and rocks will serve the purpose as well - single boulders and rocks, as opposed to a collection of rocks for a rock garden, of course - which is a nice accessory in itself.

Statuary adds an elegant finishing touch to your lawn. Surf the web to find a vast array of statues to choose from. Statue.com is a site that has thousands of statuary on offer. They range from the traditional garden statuary of Greek and Roman gods to the more exotic statues of dragons, ‘humorous pigs,’ and the like. Garden Fountains is another site with a vast range of not only statuary but fountains to choose from.

Give a thought to lighting. If you have a lot of people visiting your house for parties, for example, you might want to line the path or sidewalk to your door with lamp posts. Silicon Solar is one company of many that offer garden and yard lights for the discriminating customer. Another, unique company is Firefly Magic, which offers lighting and sounds of fire flies. Check them out.

So for the finishing touch to your lawn, give a thought to the accessories.
