Keeping Your Balance

There are always some aspects of your training that will have a profound impact on all aspects of your progress and level of competence. Stretching and overall fitness are two elements that are frequently mentioned and deserve the attention they receive. Today I want to write about another core element in your overall development as a martial artist - balance.

In Chinese martial arts and most other fighting skills, balance is very important. Unfortunately, it also seems to be neglected by many instructors. Why this is happening I don’t know, but in my experience as a trainer I have always looked at ways to incorporate balance training from the very first day. Improving your balance will help you not only with the forms, but should assist you in staying more focused during sparring and helping to deliver more accurate and more powerful attacks and defensive moves. I see many people that become frustrated that they can’t deliver attacks with sufficient power and then start focusing on weight training and punching bags rather than balance. Correct weight training might help with balance, but focusing on balance alone might yield better initial results.

There are instructors today that will inform you that the style you’re practicing is a right handed style and for that reason all the exercises and forms focus on the right side of the body. I think this is discriminating against our left handed friends and it also prevents us from fully developing our training into a well rounded system. If you’ve ever been in a sparring situation or competition, then you will know that we always seek the flaw in the other opponent. Being able to only attack with full strength from the right side would be easy to identify and would allow your opponent to use that deficiency against you. Know, to be in harmony with your body and the style, you must be able to apply your knowledge with equal effect from both sides.

But how do we achieve this balance in our daily training?

1. Start exercises with the left side first.

In this right hand world most people and martial artists tend to favor the right hand side. By starting your exercises on the left hand side, you will be able to do them with much more focus and vigor. By the time you start on the right hand side, you will have less energy and that will help to maintain a balance between the progress on the left hand side and the right hand side. Being able to focus better during the early parts will help the brain and the body to adjust so that there is a better balance between the two sides.

2. Include yoga into your daily stretching routine

There are many benefits that can be associated with yoga, but for the purpose of this article I will focus on those that will help with overall balance. Similar to martial art, yoga emphasize correct breathing habits and perform the movements and stretches with the aid of breathing. Focusing on breathing helps us to relax and should assist in gaining equal benefit on both sides. Again, do a particular stretch to the left hand side first, and then try to stretch as far on the right hand side. Try and maintain that balance. One of the core guidelines of yoga is to develop inner equilibrium and harmony, and that cannot be accomplished by favoring the one side of the body over the other. This balance that is sought through yoga will help the martial artist to improve his balance as well. The final aspect of yoga is that it tries to improve balance not only through harmony, but balance in every stance to increase awareness. If you have harmony in your strength on both sides of the body, then attaining this balance should be easier accomplished.

3. Try QiGong exercises

QiGong (Chi Kung) is also a form of exercise that tries to achieve balance and harmony through the use of breathing exercises. This is also a good way in which to start on the road of learning about the development and use of chi (energy) in your martial art training. Not only will QiGong assist in the internal balance, but it will also help you to focus on those muscles that may be slightly weaker. If for instance you were to stand in a low horse stance for five minutes, I’m sure that at some point the weaker leg muscle will start to tense up and disturb your focus. By using the knowledge gained through QiGong you will be able to focus on breathing, relaxing the muscle that is under stress and in doing so help the weaker muscles to increase to the level of the stronger muscles.

4. Look in the mirror

Once you’ve mastered a form it almost becomes second nature. In many cases we can do the form blind folded. One way to keep learning is by doing the mirror image of the form. The easiest way to accomplish this is to do it with a partner and doing the exact opposite. At first you will have to focus more, but you will also gain a level of understanding that goes beyond the form itself.

There are other ways as well, but these should get anybody started on ideas to create the harmony and balance that we associate with martial arts. Many frown on these techniques, complaining that they don’t want to weaken the dominant side to the level of the weaker side. By applying these exercises on a regular basis from the early days will strengthen the weaker side to the level of the dominant side. Stay committed to the principles of the martial arts and go beyond the popular and the easy. Go beyond your comfort zone and gain more than you ever thought possible.

Wood Furniture for Better Homes

Home decoration justifiably ranks among the top priorities for the socially active members of the society. Furniture items have, over the years, undergone a marked change of perception for their patrons. With varied change in the choices of furniture, people have the option to choose from amongst the best. And wood furniture is the top choice of the connoisseurs of exquisite furniture items. The pride in owning a priceless piece of excellent quality wooden furniture is unmatched and addictive.

The furniture made of oak, cherry, cedar, rustic pine and their ilk adds value to your dream home. In particular, Amish made furniture items are the real turn on if you love the art and craft on your furniture. The Amish handcrafted furniture is a delight to gaze and pride to possess. If you want your home to depict a picture of your true self, Amish furniture is the way to go. Made by extreme toil and sweat and requiring great skills to master the art of making marvelous pieces, Amish furniture is available at all the major furniture retailers. However, if you are looking to strike a good bargain, try to find a reputed wholesale Amish furniture dealer who can also offer extended guarantee along with attractive prices.

Hardwood is a privileged and most preferred choice. Available in varied natural colors and ranging from darkest to lightest ones, hard wood is considered as most durable among the kinds of woods used to make furniture articles. Moreover, hardwood requires least amount of care among all the other woods. Due to its sturdiness, it is long lasting and largely maintenance free.

Extreme caution is, however, required before you buy wooden furniture. This is because of the fact that a number of trick dealers have emerged in the market that will sell you fakes in the name of wooden furniture. As a general rule, heavier wood furniture ensures better quality and durability. So, the best way to check its authenticity is try to lift it. If it is genuine, you will feel considerable weight.

A thorough examination of the wooden furniture article is always called for before deciding to purchase it. Cuts, bruises, fractures, protruding nails, dents etc. can mar the otherwise beauty of the product. Gently run your hand all over the surface of the furniture to detect any kind of superfluous flaw in the finishing of the article.

However, if you find that the finished article has a minor flaw that can be easily corrected, always ask for extra discounts. Most often, the dealers will oblige to preserve their goodwill and make a new customer. Similarly, if you are looking to save some extra dollars, just ask the dealer if he is game for selling the display piece. The display pieces usually look old but actually, most of them are in perfect shape barring the odd fading. This can be easily made up by a swift coating of paint or polish. The dealers are, generally, on the look out for the buyers interested in display pieces. Obviously, these pieces are sold on a much higher discount.

Make the most of your wooden furniture and always buy cheap!

The Case Against Attorney General Gonzales

While calls for the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales over the firing of eight U.S. attorneys continue, both Gonzales and President Bush continue to hold their ground. While members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have criticized Gonzales over misleading statements concerning the firings, others have denounced the whole situation as yet another Washington political witch hunt.

However, it is not entirely clear to me exactly what Gonzales did wrong to make himself a target of these resignation demands. As in most cases, though, reasons exist both to support and oppose these demands.

First, it is rather clear that the AG should not resign merely because the firings were (at least in part) political in nature. Because Bush, like any president, can generally fire executive officials for any reason or no reason at all, Gonzales should not be an indirect scapegoat to be sacrificed by those opposing this well-established executive authority.

However, the manner in which Gonzales has handled this congressional inquiry is perhaps a more appropriate basis for calling for his resignation. For example, Gonzales has led members of Congress and the public to believe that he had either no role or a very minor role in the firings. Despite that representation, the media has reported that Gonzales was present at a meeting where his aides formulated a plan for the firings. Moreover, Gonzales reportedly approved this plan. On its face, this revelation appears inconsistent with his previous representations.

Although Gonzales probably did not knowingly lie or misrepresent the extent of his involvement, a serious question arises as to his credibility as the chief officer in the Department of Justice, a department where credibility is paramount to maintain the trust of the public. If the public cannot trust the attorney general on matters as inconsequential as perfectly legal firings or attorneys, one wonders if he can be trusted on any matter. At the very least, Gonzales has either a very bad memory or is simply too careless with his words to be trusted by Congress and the public.

The other possibility is that he simply has no respect for Congress and refused to take the time to accurately check his schedule and other records before making these misleading statements. While Gonzales could plausibly argue that he merely meant that he was not aware of the actual reason for the firings, that excuse does not vitiate the sobering reality that he comes across as uncooperative and unreliable in the search for the whole truth.

One would be bold to insist that the attorney general is cooperative and reliable as it pertains to congressional oversight. As they say in the professional-wrestling world, this man is a serious “heat magnet.” He could have and likely should have accurately and fully disclosed the extent of his involvement before making any statement. Gonzales is good at one thing - making a bad situation even worse.

On a side note, it is also puzzling that one component of the plan approved by the AG consisted of ways for dealing with any political fallout caused by the firings. Considering how badly DOJ has handled this controversy, it is manifestly clear that that part of the plan was seriously neglected. Mark that as one more signal that Gonzales has a difficult time carrying out the plans of his department. At the very least, one has to wonder why there is no clear documentation that details the reasons for the firings. Does a U.S. attorney not deserve just a little more respect than this?

In short, the real measuring stick for deciding whether Gonzales should resign is his inability to effectively cooperate with congressional oversight. Mr. Attorney General, I will let others decide whether you should resign, but please do us all a favor and take some basic classes on public relations. As it stands now, all you can do is turn a simple case of heartburn into a quadruple bypass. Even the Bush administration deserves more than this level of incompetence.

Mortgage Guarantor - Why You Should Avoid This At All Costs

Choosing to be a mortgage guarantor is a very foolish choice. When you sign the dotted line you are basically signing you money away for nothing. Of course you might not know what a mortgage Guarantor is. So I will tell you what a mortgage guarantor is and why you should avoid it at all cost.

Basically a mortgage guarantor is a third party, most commonly a friend or family member, who guarantees the mortgage company that they will pay the mortgage if the person you’re signing for defaults, or doesn’t pay. This means that if you sign the dotted line, you might find yourself in a financial bind very soon in the future.

Most people who require a mortgage guarantor, are not approved for a loan by themselves. This means the bank will not lend them money because they are scared they wont get it back! If the banks scared, you should be too! Many people unknowingly sign these papers not knowing exactly what they are signing. Even if you close friend or relative approaches you with an offer or asks you to do this, be nice but say no. It’s not worth your money, your credit, or your financial future. You can easily lose your shirt on this one if your not careful!

All that has to happen is the primary debtor miss one payment and legally you can be charged for it! This means that if you were the Guarantor for a family member’s mortgage, you might wake up one morning to find a $1,500 bill in your mailbox!

The best thing I can tell you is don’t put your money on the line for someone else, no matter how much you love, care, or trust them they are still human, and can unintentionally miss a payment, and then you’re screwed.

Your mortgage is cheating you right now of thousands of dollars!

During impact when the putter meets the ball, the position of the ball on the ground relative to your stance can have a huge impact on the direction the ball comes off the putter face and where the ball actually strikes on the putter face (towards the heel or the toe).

The majority of golfers are completely unaware of how extremely important having the ball in the correct position in your setup is. They usually just walk up to the ball, place the putter behind the ball, adjust the rest of their body, and take their stroke. Then when the ball misses the hole they automatically blame the putting stroke, condition of the green, and even the putter itself.

If the ball is just a fraction out of place in your set up, you’ve already increased the likelihood of missing the putt before you’ve even struck the ball.

Whether the ball is too close to your body, too far away, too far forward in your stance (towards your front foot), or too far back (towards your back foot), each one of these errors, if even just a fraction off, can send the ball as much as 6 inches offline in as little as a 10 foot putt.

If you look at the best putters on the PGA Tour right now you’ll notice that the position of the ball in their setup never changes… never It doesn’t matter what type of putt they face, they know exactly where their ball needs to be in their setup to assure that they leave no margin for error in their set up so that they have the best chance of successfully making each putt.

Now you and I are no different. We each require an ideal position for the ball in our set ups in order for the putter to strike the ball in the proper place on the putter face and to strike it at the best possible angle to achieve a pure “square to the target” stroke. So how do the rest of us weekend golfers find our ideal position since we don’t have access to $5000/day coaches, million dollar high speed cameras and computer software?

Well, since every golfer is different and there is no one single ideal position for everyone, there are fundamentals that must be followed to assure a proper ball position each time.

#1. The ball needs to be in a position forward enough in your stance that the putter strikes it in the first moment of the upswing while the putter is in an ascending motion. Catching the ball at this brief, ideal moment will put the truest roll on the ball. If the ball is too far back in your stance, the putter will strike the ball while it’s still in a descending motion, pushing it into the ground and causing it too skip offline in the first few inches of roll. Too far forward and the putter catches it too far into the upswing lifting it from the ground.

#2. The ball must be out far enough away from you to be in an ideal position for you to see the line of the putt while standing over the ball. This also lets you strike the ball in the center of the putter face. Striking the ball towards the heel or the toe of the putter causes the putter to twist and send the ball right or left of the target.

You should now see how important it is to be able to put your ball in this ideal position each and every time you stand over a putt. Since correct ball position has absolutely nothing to so with your putting stroke, this is one act you can do to help out your putting that doesn’t even involve having a putter in your hands.

Raising and educating boys is still a hot topic in Australia, the United States and other parts of the world. It appears that those adults who do best raising and teaching boys have a significant understanding and appreciation of what makes boys tick. Following are seven keys to successfully raising well-adjusted boys, regardless of whether you are a mother of father, sole parent or in a dual parent relationship:

Number one: You must like them.

Approval is at the heart of working successfully with boys. They will walk over broken glass or hot coals if they sense you like them. In a sense this notion holds many of them back as many boys will only work for a teacher if they like them and close down on learning if they sense the teacher doesn’t like them.

Take the time to nurture a relationship with your sons or the boys that you interact with. Some boys like to talk; others like to share an activity; some like you as an adult to do something for them; others are very kinaesthetic and love to be touched, cuddled and hugged; while some just love gifts and mementoes. Work out the relational preferences of the males in your life and make sure you match these.

Number two: Boys just want to blend in

The abiding wish of all boys from school-aged through to adolescence is to fit in and be a part of a group. They are group-oriented by nature. They tend to play group games and form themselves into structured friendship groups. This need to fit in will dictate much of their social behaviour so those who raise or work with them need to be mindful not to place them in positions which compromise this desire. Frustratingly, there can be a sameness about the group as boys adopt similar dress, language and codes of behaviour. Boys generally don’t want to stand out from their crowd.

Don’t put them down in front of their friends and realise that at times they may make friendship choice that may be dubious, but the one thing a boy doesn’t want to be is alone.

Number three: They are hierarchical and they like to know who is in charge.

Boys have two questions on their minds whether they are in a group or at home:
1.-”What are the rules here?”
2.-”Who’s in charge?”

Boys like limits and boundaries as they make them feel safe and secure. They also like to know that someone is going to enforce those rules so don’t be afraid to be ‘in charge’, although you don’t have to use the same authoritarian methods as perhaps your own parents used.

Number four: Never communicate with a mask.

Some boys, eight years of age and older, wear a mask to protect themselves from being hurt or to portray a tough guy image. This mask can take many guises including; ‘tough nut’, ‘cool guy’ and ‘class clown’. They will attempt to communicate with that mask. Refuse to communicate with a mask. Make them feel comfortable, joke with them, even tickle them but get them to drop the mask if you really want to get through to them.

Number five: Loyalty is an incredibly strong driver for boys.

Boys are group-oriented beasts. As a community we place individualism and stoicism on a pedestal. The self-made man is celebrated in Australia but this does boys a disservice. They are incredibly influenced by their peers, which can hold many of them back. It takes a brave boy to get too far ahead of the pack so they often hold each other back when it comes to achieving. But loyalty to others can get boys into trouble. Call a boy’s sister an insulting name and you are in for fight. Insult his friends and you are asking for trouble. Understand that loyalty to friends, family, teachers and cause are key male drivers and you go along way to understanding the male psyche.

Number six: Use short-term goals to motivate them.

Want to know how to motivate a boy to learn? Just make sure he can see some type of benefit in the task he will work hard to get it. You need to make sure the benefit is tangible and short-term though for many as they are less likely, compared to girls, to work when there is no foreseeable gain for them.

Number seven: Success is the greatest motivator for boys

This is tricky but essentially it is about realising that boys will succeed at most things they put their mind to if the know they will experience success. This means that we need to structure activities so that success is achievable and also make sure they experience success along the way. One simple way of putting this into practise is if a basketball coach wants to introduce a new complex skill he will make sure his charges practise known skills first before introducing the new one. If he or she is smart they will teach the activities in small steps so they can achieve little by little along the way.

There is no doubt that raising boys can be a challenge for many parents. It appears to me that those adults who do best raising boys have a significant understanding and appreciation of what makes boys tick.

Top communicators use a simple principle that guarantees that their kids take notice of them. They use the proximity principle to great effect.

I learned about the proximity principle as I observed good communications and behaviour management practice of children by adults (both teachers and parents) over a period of time. The ‘good operators’, I noted, were conscious of the time, place and space they worked in when dealing with children, particularly those kids who were upset or angry.

Okay, what is the proximity principle ?

The proximity principle is about making the best use of time, place and space to maximise our communication with others. Let’s look a little closer.

If you want your children to take notice of you and really hear you then you need to move into their proximal space, which is different to invading their personal space. A child’s proximal space is that space that is about an arm’s length away. Move closer and you are invading their personal space. This is okay with some children but for many this just ’sends them off’ as they feel threatened.

You also need to consider the timing of your communication. As a general rule, avoid talking with kids when either you or they are angry as you can talk until you turn blue and they won’t listen. You also need to be mindful of the place where communication occurs. For instance, kids are more receptive to messages when you are both seated as this is the ‘conversation’ position. Also speaking in private is also more effective than speaking in public.

The proximity principle is a simple idea but it has wide application. Let’s look at some examples.

- A mother at the beach was yelling at her five year old to stop throwing sand. At ten metres away from her child she received little joy. She then moved into her son’s proximal space (about a metre away), which meant she lowered her voice and made eye contact. The result was her son stopped throwing sand and changed activities.

- A teenager came home from school and was greeted with a ‘how was your day?’ from her high energy dad. Her response was a disinterested shrug. Dad changed tack and waited until his daughter was seated and sat near her and began a conversation. This time he made a connection. The timing was better but he also made use of space by moving close, making eye contact and then launching into a conversation. She was far more receptive.

- A ten-year-old throws a tantrum in the supermarket as his mother wouldn’t buy a certain item. His mother avoids getting into conflict here. Basically, she just grins and bears it - but she doesn’t give in. Later at home she sits down near him when he is relaxed and revisits the situation. He is more open to listening to his mother as she has made good use of the proximity principle of time, place and space.

The proximity principle is blindingly obvious however, due to many factors, we often neglect to use it. I know when my communication falls on death ears it’s usually because I have neglected some aspect of the proximity principle. Now, I am letting you in on some of my real secrets! Communication is all about the little things like timing, space and place - the proximity principle. Practise it and put it to good use and you’ll wonder why you didn’t use it before.

PS: It works wonders with partners too!
