You Can Learn to Become an Efficient Public Speaker

The fear of public speaking is very real for a lot of people. It actually ranks so high on the list that it has been shown that the fear of death actually takes a back seat to it.

At some point in your life, you have probably had the occasion to speak to a large audience. Of course large is relative. To some, it can be any number larger than zero, where others don’t start to get uncomfortable until the number reaches over a hundred.

If you are among the number of people who would rather be in the casket than delivering the eulogy, you now the anxiety, along with the sweaty palms, unsteady speech and the fear of blacking out that come with public speaking. Perhaps the worst part is waiting for your turn to speak, whether you are introduced or have to get every body attention yourself. That is the moment of truth.

Perhaps the reason for the fear is that you dont simply think everyone is looking at you; you know everyone is looking at you and judging what you are saying.

So, you take a deep breath and begin to muddle your way to the speech. At the end there is a sigh of relieve as you try to figure out if you had even holding your breath the whole time.

If this sounds familiar to you, it may help to know that even very confident people still get stage fright from time to time. Even when they have delivered the same speech hundreds of times- think motivational speakers. From time to time, we can all loose our confidence.

If you are looking to be able to deliver an address so that the audience thinks you have everything together, here are a few things to keep in mind before your next speaking engagement.

First, preparation is the key to your success. Make an outline of your speech, being sure to bold the points you want to be sure you hit.

Practice your speech to you friends, family, the dog, whoever will listen. If they have questions try to answer them in the speech. If they offer helpful suggestions, on word usage or flow, take them.

When D-Day comes, make sure you get to the venue as early as possible to feel it out. Is it a large auditorium or a relatively small meeting room? You dont want to think you are speaking to a room that holds 50 only to find out you have enough room in the hall for 150.

Dress in comfortable clothes that look nice. This will boost your confidence and make your feel more at ease.

Don’t let the audience think that you are not one hundred percent confident and knowledgeable about your topic. After all, they are there to get information from you. If they knew more about the issue at hand, they wouldn’t be there.

Remember, you have earned the right to speak. Somebody somewhere decided you were the best person to present this idea, whatever it may be, to the masses.

And breathe!

Ticket to Work is a program of the Social Security Administration (SSA) designed to make the transition to employment for recipients of Social Security cash benefits (SSI and /or SSDI) as smooth as possible.

Going to work while receiving benefits can be a complicated process. Social Security’s work rules can be difficult to figure out. As a matter of fact, many people have given up before applying for even a single job. The good news is that people voiced their frustration over this and Social Security listened and did something about it. They created the Ticket program. (The Ticket program is voluntary; you do not have to participate in it if you don’t want to.)

In this article, I will tell you a little bit about two important aspects of the Ticket program, WIPA and EN, a better understanding of which can help you to make the Ticket program work to your advantage.

WIPA stands for Work Incentives Planning and Assistance. SSA provides grants to over 100 organizations nationwide to deliver WIPA services to beneficiaries of SSI and SSDI. Resource Partnership is proud to be one of those WIPA grantees; we provide these services in Massachusetts. Since November of 2000, Resource Partnership’s WIPA program, which we call BenePLAN, has been assisting beneficiaries of SSI and SSDI to successfully navigate through the complex rules of SSA to get the information they need to decide whether pursuing employment or training is right for them. We have seen many people work their way through various benefits systems and move successfully into employment. It is complicated but, as BenePLAN can attest to, it can be done.

Our three very knowledgeable and experienced Benefits Specialists, Teri O’Shea, David Silva and Brian Forsythe, assist with SSI/SSDI work rules and incentives as well as other important benefits such as Medicare, Medicaid, MassHealth, CommonHealth, Subsidized Housing, TANF, EAEDC, Worker’s Compensation and Long-Term Disability Insurance. Teri, David and Brian are available throughout your entire employment process: as you prepare to go to work, as you transition into employment, while you are working, and if you stop working or change jobs.

EN stands for Employment Network. ENs are human service and vocational rehabilitation agencies that sign up with Social Security’s Ticket to Work program to assist recipients of SSI/SSDI to prepare for and obtain employment. If you receive SSI and/or SSDI, chances are you qualify for EN services under the Ticket to Work program. Other ways of saying this are you are ‘eligible for a Ticket’ or you are a ‘Ticket holder’. To find out if you’re eligible, call Maximus (the name of the organization that manages Social Security’s Ticket program) toll-free at 1-866-968-7842. A representative will tell you whether or not you are eligible for a Ticket.

Resource Partnership is an EN under the Ticket program and is currently working with Ticket holders to help them reach their employment goals. If you are interested in learning more about our EN, I encourage you to contact our Ticket to Work Coordinator Mary Kowit toll-free at 1-877-937-9675 Ext. 18 or by email at mary@resourcepartnership.org.

I have discussed WIPAs and ENs. At the Resource Partnership, our EN works very closely with our WIPA Benefits Specialists. We have learned that a close working relationship between WIPA, EN and the Ticket Holder is essential to overall success.

Resource Partnership’s mission is the employment and career advancement of people with disabilities. We exist to help you reach your employment and financial goals. We hope you will call us today to GET THINGS STARTED!

Kathleen A. Petkauskos is the president of

Resource Partnership, a non-profit organization that assists individuals with varying abilities and disabilities find and experience success at all levels of employment and in a wide range of industries and occupations.

I have been interested enough about the Predatory Lending aspect of what I call “balloon” loans to watch CSpan-2 off and on all day. I am not impressed with the outcome of the Sub Committee’s questions, nor their grandstanding. Yep, Politics as usual! But of such import that we are about to melt down a market that once was the “Goose that laid Golden Eggs”

The main thrust is this. Do the Consumer (the borrower in this case) have enough information from the industry, and from his lending Broker in particular, to make a “right” decision for himself? Of course this is the road as far as questioning the “talking heads Subpoenaed to represent their particular part of an industry that cannot ( I say again!) Cannot be controlled the way that some in Office in Washington would like to display before the public via CSPAN-2.

The industry itself is both one that is totally flexible by nature, and non-controllable by design. There is no Congressman nor Representative that could write a Bill to control the Lending Market!

In response to one Questioning Senator; “When the construction / lending Broker in this “pamphlet” says, “We are here to serve you and get the lowest interest (and best deal) for you.” They are lying! Is that right?”

“No,” The Talking Head said; “In TEXAS;…….and then he was cut off by the question being rephrased by the same questioning Senator. “No,” Again the Talking Head said, ” In Texas that is not correct. I don’t work for the Borrower. But in TEXAS we have a “disclosure” to that effect on the wall, and the Borrower has to sign the disclosure that such is the case as part of the paperwork he does sign.”

Now that did not satisfy. Nor was the question designed to be answered specifically, no matter how hard you punch a man’s forehead! The question was designed for YOU! That is; if you were watching today along with me, or if you will see it on a short “Catch it” on the public airwaves tonight on the news broadcasters.

The truth, which was of course like any Senate Hearing, told in answers to questions put to these same Talking Heads of Industry in a Hidden Closed No Written Documents Allowed, NO Recordings Allowed “pre-hearing”. You see, they want the picture to show themselves as “on the ball”, and “involved and intelligent” about this and any other Hearing, that the Senators all play, “Gotcha!” with both the Talking Heads of the Lending Institutions; the “Called Witnesses”, and YOU, the PUBLIC! To make themselves seem to be doing “something” about “predatory lending”, as a real crisis is at hand.

You see, there has been a “breath test” (i.e. fog a mirror, get a loan) for a few years. And this, coupled with a mandatory “Bad Loan Default” buy-back against the Industry, is going to make a mess for a while of the Lending and Money Industry.
No doubt about it. But, …….who’s fault is that?

The Consumers? (Buyer Beware?) Or the Lending Broker, who is having to toe some serious lines in order to actually close the loans. The rules the Broker has to work under is so onerous that he can hardly close any loan fast (less than 30 to 60 days) let alone work a scam. The real guilt then lies with the Lending Bankers, the Underwriters? Not even. They too have to deal with “failure to make first payments” and “buy backs” and so on. The problem is one that is easily fathomed if you can grasp it. The guilty party, Guilty of Predatory Lending, is the United States of America! In particular, the Senate and the House of Representatives!

One questioning Senator at the end of the day wanted to ask a question with would, he said, “Answer “yes” or “no”!” Almost half the line up of Talking Heads from the Lending Institutions Group, wanted to elaborate and not answer “yes” or “no”, feeling it was unfair to ask questions and demand such an answer!

The Senator interrupted; and said that as a matter of fact (sir) you get your money (to lend) for free!

Now, you might want to just stop there a minute and think on that!

Of course he gets his “start-up” money for “free”! How else is he going to get money to “Lend”? How is he going to take advantage of the opportunity to earn huge cash interest rates and work the “point spread” if he actually has to obtain his own money by borrowing it ? In fact, no other Industry in America has to borrow it, why should he? And who could “borrow” a few million dollars to get “start-up” capital anyway? That is; without collateral. Which is the case here!

Now in case you don’t understand all this high money lending industrial mess, you may get to knee-jerking when you read this, (if you had watched the CSPAN-2 Broadcast you would be doing worse!) and get to thinking, no DEMANDING something be done about this Predatory Lending and “no money down” borrowing of hard cash just to lend it to you, the Borrower at exorbitant rates! Sorry, the world don’t work that way.

You see, as one man said rightly, “The Industry (weeds out the bad actors for itself) is a good one, but it is broken.” So what is to be done? They, the Talking Heads of Money Industry, say Policing the Broker! That’s the answer. No, it is not the answer. Not especially in Texas, it ain’t!

In Texas I have wondered years before why homeless people sat and lived practically outside the HUD offices? The answer is that so often, by Federal Decree, the staff at HUD had to go out on the street and give a home away! Yep, you bought, worked to pay, and then probably lost, your home. You dream. But there were (are?) ways to get a home free! That is one that has been foreclosed upon. That is; unless you play the game straight, and work hard, and are raising a family. Then you get to pay! Pay for all the shenanigans those that are in a fiduciary position should be held liable and answerable for themselves! But again, the system don’t work that way!

A rich man lost everything. He lost job, business, home, money, everything. He owed money on everything, so he went bankrupt (you can’t file now, without repaying, know that?). Shortly after going bankrupt he got a gift of a home! No, not a home; a mansion! How? Well, the right Reverend Somebody, who he had been donating to, you know tithing? Gets a few houses from the old HUD to give out to the “Poor” and the “homeless”. That way the Mandated Give Away, mandated by the U.S. Government, Yep, your Senators, will be reached. The Preacher, Teacher, Padre, Minister, gave a “special” home to this ex-millionaire. It was special, because it was a mansion taken from someone who defaulted on a loan. So the ex-millionaire got a new mansion, which is right you see? It fit his “lifestyle”!

I hope your mad! Very mad! I hope you will stay mad and not take this “Snake Oil” that the Senators are putting out for sale! The Predatory Lending is being done by the System. A System that they have messed with forever, trying to “fix” it or worse, “level the playing field” while looking out for number one! Themselves! You are not in the top “Ten”! No one cares if a working man with wife and family to feed and a house gets a sub-priced loan, dealing with some shark, just to get a home, where he now has to pay exorbitant taxes to feed the rich! He pays! And pays! And pays! Because that System does work! And that System here in America is designed to take your money, and keep it. The Government knows exactly to the penny what a family of four would make, take, spend on utilities and food, and a house payment, and keep up a used car. Then they inch slowly, like a Snake, up to that very penny! Oh, well, you can’t take it with you can you?

I hope your mad. But who do you vote for? I give up. I have no idea these days. In Texas you have your eyes opened to real straight business dealings with Home Loan Brokers, who have to be licensed and have bonds. But there is such a heavy toll of paperwork, who knows if it is all legit? Certainly not the Loan Broker! He or she, has to do exactly like those with the Golden Rules say to do. The Golden Rule is; “Those with the Gold make the Rules”!

A company, any company, creates itself. It actually builds itself, and usually creates a new, if not real, person! the Corporation. It, the Corporation can do anything that a real person like you can do. Except go to Jail and get married. It can Merge, which is better than marriage, ask those identical entities out there! And the Board should go to jail if they do something illegal. After all, they are the majority (read holders of the Preferred Stock, i.e., the Owners) stock holders. And then they get together with an Underwriter, that’s short for Under the Table. And they create stock, but not necessarily Preferred Stock, no it is Common Stock (as in for the Common man? As in for stealing the Common man’s hard earned cash he needs for retirement and the kids braces!) to “offer” over the table, (wall street)(no caps) for suckers, er, investors of the public to purchase, have and to hold. Or is that “Left Holding”? A “Promissory Note” Common Stock is. It is a document where-by you give them hard cash, and they “promise” not to pay you a return unless they get so glutted in their accounts that someone actually takes a notice. This means Accountants get rich. Rich playing “now you see them profits; now you don’t!”.

As the sun sits on Washington, and on your life, not to mention your wallet, we know the System inside and out. And we are only here to serve you! Serve you up on a platter with potatoes! While the Corporation purchases “Get out of Environmental Jail Free” cards from people who have vetted (yep some Newsmen) and won the give-away Pollution Points that make their land holdings actually worth something!

Now you know! You know how the System works. And you know that nothing you do or say will change anything in your; and by the way, my; life! As the Bible states; To live long enough to bring up your grandchildren on your knee is a blessing.” or something close to that. I’m no scholar, as you probably can read. But I know a good one when I get it, and where I got it, and from whom!

Don’t worry. In the end the Government will pound out some more “Collectors Commemorative Coins” Quarters; dimes; nickles; paying pennies for them, and exchange them for your paycheck at eight cents for a half-dollar! Neat System, no? That is; if you can actually control it, while playing up to you, the Sucker! And make you and me believe em.

When starting a garden you have two choices when it comes to the garden plants and flowers you grow, you can raise them from seed or you can purchase your vegetables. Your gardening success will depend on the quality of these small starter plants. Knowing the difference between good plants and bad plants will go a long ways toward you having a bountiful harvest in the fall.

You need to choose the place you buy your garden plants and flowers carefully. Looks are important and healthy plants will usually appear green and strong. They need to be a good size, not too big and not too small. This article will look at a few essential things you need to know to pick out strong vigorous plants for your garden.

The place you decide to purchase your plants has everything to do with their success rate. It is your money you are spending so pick carefully the place you decide to buy your plants. You can go to a home improvement superstore or local hardware store to purchase your vegetables. Many people like to get in the car and drive outside the city a little ways and find a farmer or roadside stand that sells starter vegetables. It may be wise to watch how the employees take care of things. You can often learn a lot by standing back and simply watching what is going on. Wherever you decide to buy from make sure they look good.

For a garden that will thrive all summer long you need to pick out strong, healthy plants. Take a look at their overall appearance. Does the plant look healthy? Does the color appear to be normal? You want to pick something out that will survive. Make sure it is a healthy green before you load it into the car. Make sure your find is the right size to take home with you.

You want your future harvest to be just the right size. If it is too small it may take a long time to catch up and delay your harvest. Plants that are huge may have been hanging around the nursery too long. I like to pick out a nice medium size. This size plant seems to give a very good success rate. Look for any abnormalities or defects that may affect the way your plant will grow.

When you purchase your garden plants and flowers somewhere you need to remember their care up to that point has been in another persons hands. They may not have the love for green things that you have. A rough start can often be overcome with a little tender loving care. Treat your garden well and it will reward you many times over all year long.

The persistent truth is that the scale of the challenges we face globally has changed the entire context for how business operates and contributes. Global warming has gone from being denied to coffee shop conversation. The implications global warming has on the future of humanity creates speculation and, for the most part, fear or disbelief.

Meanwhile, at a deeper level people sense the need to evolve, to tap into what holds deeper meaning and want to make a higher level of contribution. Accompanying this underlying force is the real need for high performance leadership; leadership that merges the untapped capacity for self-performance with group leadership and takes it to whole new levels.

This is the stuff frequently overlooked or dismissed as esoteric distraction while corporate leadership grapples with the usual demands along with the appearance of new more complex issues many of which have risen much like the sea levels, quietly yet forcefully catalyzing the shift to higher ground.

The notion that there is immense talent lying dormant within each individual underneath childhood preprogrammed limitations is established by cellular biology and well articulated by Dr. Bruce Lipton. From the ages of 0-6 children operate from brainwave frequencies that function like a tape recorder, taking in all the messages, both limiting and empowering, and storing them into the subconscious. Unless those limiting beliefs are replaced they become the foundation that the individual sees the world through. It shows in individual and collective performance and in personal and professional relationships.

When the working environment is perceived to be unsafe, employees will unknowingly yet naturally, repress their expression and contribution. Repressed expression is channeled in one of two ways: depression or aggression. When people do not feel safe, they express through a range of behaviors including increased insecurity, absenteeism, self-sabotage, or aggressive sabotage, or stress-related illness.

For the development of the social network required to receive and support deeper talent and highest levels of self performance, subconsciously held limiting beliefs must be recognized for what they are….blocks to performance.

We are at the crossroads of a truly great opportunity.

First, the assumption that you cannot change the subconscious drivers which drive 90-95% of behavior is simply no longer true.

Second, we know that underneath the limitation is an unlimited source of innovative thinking, deeper talent and that each person brings a piece of the trust to the group leadership equation.

Thirdly, we know what makes learning stick. We just do not do what it takes to ensure it happens. We have the chance to systematically apply what we know to ensure the newly acquired skills can be applied to add value to personal and professional lives.

Fourth, we know what when an individual contributes from their core innate knowledge they are directly wired to purpose and passion therefore two things happen:
Work has meaning;
Innovation that matters is well within the collective capacity for individual and group performance.

Corporate leadership is actively searching for higher performance and innovation. Rather than assuming motivation is all external, perhaps it is time to create the social networks for tacit knowledge to be collectively applied. This starts with the individual’s growth and then expands to group performance.

The saying ‘the answers lie within’ has more than one meaning in these times of radical change.

In todays economy, it is sometimes necessary to have a two family income. This can create problems in families where there has been a stay at home mom.

Studies have shown that just because mom is not home, children can still thrive in other atmospheres. They have also shown that both working and stay at home moms can contribute equally to a childs development.

Stress is a part of everyday life. However, for the working mom, it can be even more so. Moms rise and shine way before anyone else, to prepare breakfast, and school lunches if needed, and then wake up the rest of the family. It is mom who deals with the tired cranky children, get them ready and off to school. Then it is her turn to get ready for work, drop the babies off at daycare, and then off to work they go to work long hours.

When the workday is done, they go home to their families, cook dinner, do laundry, run errands clean the house, check the homework, pay the bills, and tuck the little ones in bed for the night. If the working mom is lucky, she can sit for an hour or so with her spouse.

This may seem like it is an awful lot to take in, and you may wonder how can anyone do this day after day?

Being a mother, whether it is a working mom or stay at home mom, it is a 24/7 position that does not come with many coffee breaks.

When you add an eight-hour workday to this, the result will undoubtedly be stress. The amount of stress can be limited with good time management skills.

When you present a good self-image to your children, they will naturally develop to be better adjusted. Children, even small children, can sense stress and will naturally react to it.

Parents are the biggest influence in a childs life. Parents are whom the child models themselves after and it is the parents who shape their child. If a parent is a contributing member of society, then the child will be also.

It is important to talk about your day, your child will want to hear about your trials and tribulations of the day, it helps them to understand what you do for work during the day.

When both parents work, it is crucial that the household responsibilities be shared. Children need to feel that they are loved by both parents, not just mom. When the father shares in the childcare routine, they are forming a bond with their children as strong as mom is. This is crucial to developing a well-adjusted happy child. Starting a routine where dad is involved also gives mom a chance to catch her breath after a long day.

When stress from work is brought home, children sense it and can make it difficult for them to express themselves. They do not understand the feelings that they have and tend to act out more.
When a child has these feelings, the subconscious reactions that they have can cause them even more stress.
It is important to keep the stress from work at work and not bring it home.

When a child is born, the first year of their life is crucial to their development. It is in the first year that all of the childs major emotional bonds are formed. These bonds will last for the rest of your childs life. They recognize their primary care giver as their protector, and if both parents work outside the home, it can have a serious impact on the child. Some children view their parents as company, and some children even fear when their parents take them home from their daycare provider. If it is possible, staying home for the first year of life will help your child to bond with you.

There are some parents who feel a sense of loss because they work long hours. They feel that they are letting their children down in some way. This can lead to a dangerous cycle of buying gifts for their children to make up for not being home. Experts advise against this because children will inevitably take advantage of these feelings. As the child gets older, the gifts get more expensive and the child grows to expect it.

Spending quality time with your children is far better then gifts of guilt. The time that you spend together will last far long then the gifts that you can buy.

Can studying music make kids smarter? Recent research shows that studying music contributes to brain development. Students who study music tend to have higher grades and SAT scores, and receive more academic honors and awards than non-music students. Participating in music provides many other long-term benefits, as well–emotional, physical and social.

For young children, music helps build language skills and coordination, and boosts self-confidence. For older kids and teenagers, participation in a chorus, band or orchestra provides an emotional outlet, and enhances creativity and social skills. Participating in music provides a lot of the same benefits as sports: being part of a team, improved discipline and self-esteem, and better health.

Kids who study music tend to be high achievers who stay out of trouble–the kind of peer group most parents hope their children will have. Educators notice that high school students in band, chorus or orchestra tend to choose their friends from those groups–a trend that continues through college.

Singing is a great way for kids to get started in music. Singing:

  • Improves lung development, posture, muscle control and oxygen flow to the brain
  • Develops a better speaking voice, improved vocabulary and grammar, and clearer articulation and presence when speaking in public
  • Releases endorphins that relieve depression and anxiety, replacing them with feelings of energy and happiness
  • Can start at any age.

When should a child start music lessons? It’s never too early to start singing. Second grade is a good time to start piano or a string instrument. Most students aren’t physically ready to take on a brass or woodwind instrument until fourth or fifth grade. Talk to the prospective music teacher to help determine if your child is ready for lessons. If your school has a band, orchestra or chorus, encourage your kids to participate. And be sure to attend every concert!

Whether or not your kids grow up to be professional musicians, music is a social and artistic activity that they can continue to enjoy for the rest of their lives.

From downtown to its outer suburbs, Cleveland, Ohio has much to offer. The city is a dynamic mix of cultures, situated on Lake Erie. Having grown up here, these are a few of my favorite places to visit if you’re going to be in town. The best time to visit if you want to avoid very cold weather is late spring or early fall. You won’t be disappointed.

Public Square and Tower City
In the heart of Cleveland is a beautiful old skyscraper called the Terminal Tower. Built in the late 1920’s, its lower interior was remodeled in the 80’s to have a large, fully enclosed mall called Tower City. It is impressive, to say the least, with its fountains, marble floors and elegant, multi-leveled structure. It’s where Clevelanders meet to eat, shop and go to ball games. Nearby are the sports stadiums for baseball, basketball and football. This is a city who loves their sports. In the basement of Tower City, you can catch the subway, called the Rapid Transit or RTA, to the east or west side. The Rapid is fast, and convenient. Many businesspeople use it everyday to get to work. It also goes out to the airport. Tower City is a hub of most activity for Clevelanders.

The Flats
If you like to go out for a good meal, the Flats is a picturesque place to go. Many restaurants are on both the east and west banks of the Cuyahoga River, that runs next to Terminal Tower. This river is where immense ore barges and other ships come and go. The waterway is heavily used in the summer for both business and personal use by everyone. On the scenic west bank is Shooters, a popular restaurant that I used to go to, the view of the water is spectacular from there. There are concerts on there in the summer by famous bands of many genres. The historic Power House nearby is another popular place. It is a fully renovated old electric power building with TGIFridays, Howl at the Moon Saloon, the Improv comedy club and more. My friends and I used to go there frequently to meet after work.

Cleveland Metroparks System
Cleveland is surrounded by a very large ring of public parks, that are well maintained and offer spectacular natural beauty. There are places to cook, shelters and picnic tables, jogging trails, horseback riding stables and more. This ring extends for many miles all over the Cleveland suburbs. My favorite is the Chagrin Reservation in the autumn, when the trees are all changing their colors. Fall is spectacular if you like nature, the trees’ vivid colors really stand out. There are events like horse shows, dog shows and others throughout the year. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is a popular place, too, on the near west side.

University Circle
This is a highly cultural area on the east side of Cleveland, full of students since many colleges are in this area, Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Institute of Art, to name a few. The Cleveland Museum of Art is a stately building with many varied exhibits from the suit of armor room to Egyptian mummies and tombs. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is a favorite of mine, showing in detail dinosaur skeletons, the history of the area, the beauty of nature and how the world works through exhibits, lectures and a planetarium. The Cleveland Botanical Garden is next door, and a must for plant lovers, it even has a rainforest. The Crawford Auto Museum is elegant, and the site of many weddings and parties. There you can see cars from all ages in perfect condition. Great for old car buffs.

Little Italy
This ethnic part of University Circle is a wonderful place to go to a cafe, or festival. They have yearly traditional festivals like the Feast of the Assumption, where the streets are closed off and people jam in there like sardines. Little Italy is chock full of galleries. An old elementary school there was turned into a building full of shops and galleries, and the surrounding shops are artistic as well. It is an artist’s paradise. There are art walks and shows frequently. Stop at Presti’s Bakery for the most amazing pastries, ever. If you are there at the crack of dawn, Presti’s has a small donut shop a few doors down from their bakery, but it closes early. If you’re lucky enough to catch it while it’s open, the donuts are warm and fresh. It has been a tradition for area residents for many, many years.

Chagrin Falls
An outer suburb of Cleveland, this is my home town. With seven waterfalls throughout its territory, this charming, New England-flavor town has the homey atmosphere that occaisionally attracts movie producers, and is the site of a few past motion pictures. Go to Chagrin Falls on Memorial Day, when there is a parade and festival (Blossom Time) in the downtown park. This is Americana at its best. Stop at the Popcorn Shop, across the street from the downtown park, where you can get ice cream, popcorn and other snacks. It is a very old, historic building full of history built right on top of a waterfall. There is a public staircase to go beneath it and see the falls from down below. If you go to Chagrin in the summertime, this is a must. In the heart of town, there is also an old gazebo that used to be where old-time bands would play music. This is a quaint old town you don’t want to miss.

The West Side Market
If you love to buy fruit, meat and other food items directly from vendors themselves, the West Side Market is the place to go and dicker with them. There are long-established family vendors selling fresh chickens, old world pastries, meats, chocolates and every fruit and vegetable imaginable. There are Polish, Italian, Irish, Slavic, Mexican, German and other foods there. It’s a melting pot full of fresh food with a loyal following of people who come from all over to shop.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Science Center next door
If you love rock and roll, visit this museum or be square! It is a lively modern building, built on Lake Erie, with exhibits, shows, and souvenirs galore. Next door is the science center, with its own IMAX theater. These are wonderful family venues, so make sure to take your kids and walk around both places. Frequently when I’ve been there, boat shows can be seen outside, so check out on the water when you’re there. The lake is a center of activity all in itself.

If you have the chance to visit Cleveland, remember to bring your camera. It is a diverse place with much to explore. Go to the art shows, plays, museums and visit the many top-notch restaurants. This city is growing, and improving daily. Go see a game or two, ride the train. On St.Patrick’s Day, there is a huge parade worth attending, whether or not you’re Irish. If you get really adventurous, drive out to Cedar Point or Amish country (about an hour or so from downtown Cleveland). If you need maps while there, stop at the Chamber of Commerce or AAA. Whatever you do, go to Tower City, downtown Cleveland is well worth visiting. Once you go, you will see what all the fuss is about, this great city has it all. Cleveland really does rock.

Nutrition experts from the University of California, Berkeley, conducted research indicating that vitamin C reduces oxidative stress for those exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke, decreasing the likelihood of atherosclerosis - a disease affecting the arterial blood vessels - as well as heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases.

The study was published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer, and was funded by the University of California Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program. The National Cancer Institute also supported the research.

The study based its findings upon the theory that vitamin C can reduce oxidative stress. Cigarette smoke contains free radicals, which can cause damage to cells. Many studies have been done successfully, measuring the effect of vitamin C on smokers, but there are few studies that look at the effects of vitamin C on those who are consistently breathing second-hand smoke.

The researchers studied 67 nonsmokers, split into three groups. The first group took 500 milligrams of vitamin C daily and the second group took a mixture of vitamins C and E, along with the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid. The third group was given placebo capsules.

All those participating had stopped taking vitamins five weeks prior and were chosen because they were exposed to indoor cigarette smoke on a daily basis of at least one cigarette per day and they did not consume large amounts of fruits, vegetables or alcohol, which would influence oxidative stress levels.

In the study, the researchers tested for F2-Isoprostanes, generated through a form of oxidative stress called lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxidation can lead to damage of the cell membrane.

After two months of taking vitamin C, a practically a household name among the various href=http://www.vitaminstuff.com/antioxidants.html> antioxidants, blood levels of F2-Isoprostanes dropped considerably. Compared with the group taking the placebo, the vitamin C group saw an 11.4 percent decrease in F2-Isoprostanes levels, while those taking the vitamin C, E and antioxidants mixture saw a 12.7 percent drop. Since there was not a sizable difference in the two groups taking the vitamins, the researchers agreed that vitamin C was the key ingredient.

They also found that ascorbic acid levels in the blood increased significantly - 32 percent in the vitamin C group and 41 percent in the mixture group.

The study is raising the eyebrows of the health community and although they are not saying that taking daily vitamin C will prevent chronic diseases, they are very hopeful that vitamin C supplements will reduce the amount of smoke related diseases for those who are forced to deal with second hand smoke.
