Weight Loss Diets - Still On The Yo-Yo?

Have you found yourself a few pounds up? Does your weight loss routine seem to go 2 pounds up- 1 pound back?

The first step in any successful weight loss plan, is how to get the motivation. We all know the diets, read the newest and latest best sellers. However, we keep up with the same old habits. We join clubs on the 1st of Jan. only to disappear by Feb. 1st.

What is your motivation for loosing weight? If you haven’t found it, you probably won’t succeed. How about being healthier and being around to see your kids graduate.

How about just looking better in clothes?

For me my motivation came when I decided to see how the camera saw me. I had my wife take pictures from all angles in my bathing suit. Next, I posted these pictures on my mirrors, refrigerator and even in my truck. After a week went by, I became disgusted by the pictures. I stopped in to a health club and had them measure my body fat. They told me politely that I was 27 percent lard.

That was the breaker!

After that, I began an exercise program that included diet, drinking more water, weight training, aerobics, monthly body composition measurements, keeping a log, and getting plenty of sleep.

The only real diet that makes sense is to get a steady diet of exercise. Start slow and progress forward. Visit a gym, see a trainer. Do whatever it takes to get motivated. Get intense if the Doctor says it is Ok. Watch the Biggest Loser on TV for motivation. Not everybody wins the trophy but most go home healthier and a winner.

Are You a Person, Partner or Parent First?

It is useful to think in terms of the person, partner and parent relationship. I believe that you are a person first, a partner (if involved in a relationship) second and, lastly, you are a parent.

Most mothers tend to put things the other way around and put all their effort and energy into their children first, tend to the needs of their partner next, and put their own emotional and physical needs last. It needs to be that way when a new child comes into the world - babies are all-consuming. However, it is easy to continue that way rather than change priorities as children move through the different stages of development.

For the sake of parental well-being and self-esteem it is important that in some ways mothers (and fathers) reclaim their lives and put themselves first at least sometimes. This means you may need to create opportunities during each day, each week and each month for you to do the enjoyable activities that sustain you.

Similarly, it is important to create opportunities to spend time with your partner that do not revolve around your children. A weekly coffee time, a monthly night out and a three monthly weekend away are just some ways you can make sure your partnerships grows.

By tending to ourselves first and our partners second you create the right environment to be a terrific parent. You are more able to provide for the emotional and self-esteem needs of your child as you have looked after your own psychological needs.

How to Lower Your Teen’s Auto Insurance Rate

Sooner or later, no matter how much you want to avoid it or how much you dread it, your teenager will learn to drive. Worse than that, they may even get a car. To top it all off, they will have to get insurance for that car. We all know that getting an auto insurance policy for a newly licensed teenaged driver is expensive.

Forming a partnership between you, your teen and the insurance company will help you to reduce your rates and maybe keep a few extra dollars in you pocket. Here are a few tips:

  1. Maintain a clean driving record: Make sure that your teen is aware of the laws and restrictions in your state. Instill in your teen the importance of following the rules of the road. Just one traffic violation for a newly licensed driver may have you paying two to three times what you should pay. Until your teen can afford to pay for his own policy, he must keep a perfect driving record to protect your pocket.

  2. Follow my lead: Are you setting a good example? Do you speed? Do you tailgate? Your teen is watching you. Make sure you show them how it should be done. Remember, your soon to be driving pre-teen is watching you too.

  3. Maintain Good Grades: Students who maintain an average of B or above may earn up to a 25% discount on insurance rates.

  4. Drivers Education: Many insurance companies offer lower rates to teenagers that have completed qualified driver’s education courses. Before you spend money on a course, check with your insurance carrier to find out which schools they accept.

  5. Safety: When looking for a car, keep in mind that insurance companies like safety features. The safer the car, the lower the rate. The faster and newer the car, the higher the rate. Do a little homework before buying your teen a car. Be aware of the theft or vandalism rate for the car you’re buying. The more likely it is to be stolen or vandalized, the higher your premiums.

  6. Alcohol and Drugs: Under aged drinking is illegal. Your insurance company may void your policy as a result of an illegal action.

  7. Watch your teen in action: Drive with your teen from time to time. See if they are still the safe driver they were when they first got their license, or have they developed a few bad habits. Be a passenger and observe. Compliment them if they’re doing a good job, or diplomatically point out potential problems.

  8. Talk to your agent: Your insurance agent can help you to determine whether or not it is cheaper to put your teen on your policy. If you drive an expensive car, your rates may increase dramatically by adding your teen. It might be cheaper to get a separate policy, depending on the type of cars in your household. Your agent can offer advice on the best way to insure your teen’s car.

  9. Shop: Get a couple of quotes and compare.

Working together with your teen and insurance company will help you to get the best auto rate for your teen possible. It’s worth the effort.

Viruses and Spyware - Why Do I Keep Getting Infected?

Internet Security Tips for the Home User-Part 1

If I have installed antivirus and antispyware software, have kept Windows updated and have a firewall, why do I still get computer infections?

This is a question that has riddled both antivirus companies and computer users since the beginning of high-speed internet use. This article outlines the two main methods hackers use to infect a home user’s computer.

First, let’s discuss the two main aspects of this problem that typical security software has the most difficult time overcoming: reverse engineering and social engineering.

Hackers will often reverse engineer security software to figure out how it detects spyware threats. This means, they study the means of detection, so they can devise methods of getting around your antivirus software the next time. Reverse engineering has long been used by hackers and many reverse engineered threats can be eliminated by keeping your antivirus software updated and upgraded on a constant basis.

Hackers have figured out an even easier way to gain access to your computer, however. They use social engineering to exploit the human user.

The most common methods of social engineering are:

* Cleverly crafted fraudulent emails

* Email attachments that pretend to be items of great importance

* Free offers that have hidden programs in them

* Web sites that silently try to sneak software onto your machine, when you click on a link.

Of all the computers on the Internet, a normal household computer attached to a high-speed connection is the most targeted. If you have “screen-agers” (tech-savvy teens) you are in a very high risk group for viruses and spyware. Screen-agers are not afraid of anything and will click on, download or visit any Web site, especially if they think they are getting something for nothing.

Teens are the primary users of file swapping software (Limewire, KaZaa, BitTorrent, etc.), frequent visitors to crack sites (to avoid paying for software) and live on social network sites, (i.e. Myspace.com, Facebook.com) which are all targeted by the bad guys.

Residential computers tend to have a much greater level of virus and spyware infections, primarily because of the way they are used.

Hackers understand their victims and always go after the weakest ones. In this case, it’s the average residential user.

If you are using all of the right software and updates to protect your computer, and still getting infected, it is highly likely it is do to a “liveware” problem, meaning someone using your computer is engaging in risky internet surfing and/or loading or downloading software that has hidden code in it.

If you can stop this behavior, you can stop the infections. Any seasoned computer person can take a look at the programs you have installed and determine if you have a user abuse problem.

The Art of Selling - Preparation

Having been involved in sales for most of my career, I can attest to the many successes and failures of various colleagues. In trying to determine the root of those that had problems selling, it can be summed up in a few words; lack of preparation. These poor people would knock on a door or make a call with almost no idea of what they were going to say or how the sales call should go. What they needed was an outline and some general knowledge of the company regarding whom they were calling. With the advent of the Internet, this is inexcusable. The ability to research a specific company or industry has become as easy as clicking a mouse.

In my day, I had to read journals, look in the phone book, or ask around to get even a glimmer of information. But I would arm myself with whatever was available before entering the business. If not, I might look like a fool. Suppose I was going to see a dentist. I was a Yellow Page salesman at the time and now consider this dialog.

ME: “Hello Dr. Jones. I’m here to sell you a Yellow Page ad in our directory. I figure that most of your new patients would use the book to find you.”
HIM: “No, they wouldn’t because I don’t take any insurance and I charge the most in town.”
ME: “Then how do you get new patients?”
HIM: “I don’t. We aren’t accepting any new patients.”
ME; “Oh.”

If I had done my homework I would have known what to expect and not looked like an idiot by going down the wrong path. This was a unique dentist, but even he could have been sold using the right technique. If I had been prepared, I could have taken a different path. For example, listen to this new conversation.
ME: “So, Dr. Jones, I understand you’re closed to new patients. Then what do you do about the ones that move away or die? Each year that’s about 20%, according to my industry figures.”
HIM: “Really, I didn’t know that. I really just want to maintain my current practice without any trouble or expense.”
ME: “Well, I have an ad that would only attract the most profitable customers to help replenish your base. And all for a minimal investment of your time and money. Would you allow me to show it to you?”
HIM: “Well, I do have a few minutes. What have you got in mind?”

Do you see the difference even a little preparation can make? I had a few statistics up my sleeve and designed an ad based on what I thought he might need. So, instead of a wasted call, I end up with a good sale and the respect of someone who might now normally have given me the time of day. The moral: do you due diligence, know your customers, your product, and their industry before the call. It will make all the difference in the end.
